Super Robot Quest G

March, Year Four - When It Rains
0900, 3 March A.D. 2073
Engineering Bay

"Curious."

Ichiro glanced over at Zulu. "That's it?" he asked, after waiting for a few moments. "Dr. Ignatov and Greg just made whole new bits of life based off of, well...Drones," he said, after a moment of awkwardness, "and you've got just one word to express it?"

"Yes." Zulu looked back up at him - the Drone scientist had begun to take steps to individualize ever since he had been turned in DFRI's custody. His single red visor fitted well over the face guard and a black head unit. A dark purple color scheme was only interrupted by streaks of white lines, seemingly at random but likely in patterns that had some significance to him. Ichiro wasn't going to try and spend the processing power to figure out what they meant.

The Golems were...interesting. They all shared a head unit similar to what Zulu sported, but they were already seemingly getting ahead of individualizing themselves. Some had foregone the face guard entirely, letting themselves appear with full faces. Others were customizing their vehicular appearances, either in simple color cosmetics, or adding...well, he wasn't sure adding that extra fin on the back or side was going to make them more aerodynamic in aerial mode, but to each their own, he guessed.

"So...how're we gonna explain any of this to anyone?"

"An interesting problem statement." Zulu tilted his head as he considered it. He came to a remarkably quick conclusion: "But not our problem statement. The Westphalian way station is likely far higher on the priority list."

"Oh, right." Ichiro stretched his shoulder out, his servos spasming slightly in memory of the destroyer with the crab walker legs. "No clue what was going on with that. You think Major Devin's got it figured out?"

"Whether he does not or not, it is his problem statement."

"You realize it's growing more difficult to keep some of your subordinates' achievements subtle, don't you?"

You wince slightly at the dry, pointed look that Brigadier General Peters is giving you over the vidlink. "I like to think they're good problems, ma'am. We've got two active Super Robots with auxiliary staff-"

"I'm aware of what you have accomplished," Peters cuts you off. "It's managing the flow of information that's growing more cumbersome." She pulls up screens of her own, making a show of referring to a list. "Let me see here...ahh, yes. You've created more AI lifeforms. It almost makes the miniaturization of alien technology a bloody afterthought, doesn't it?" Her expression brightens slightly as she tosses you a bone. "I do concur it is indeed a 'good problem' to have. Same as striking the official partnership with the Legion, otherwise we'd be on the backfoot even more with the Free Brothers."

"Or just calling them all Kausen and not knowing the difference." You do notice that despite the damnation by faint praise you're getting from Peters, her expression is a little troubled. "Something on your mind, ma'am?"

"Currently dealing with...issues. We're exploring the possibility of creating satellite Super Robot programs. I say it's time that we spread the wealth around, make sure that not everything is concentrated in that university of yours. Give us more coverage - especially after that damned oil derrick we found. To think you almost set up shop there."

"When, ma'am?" You knew this was coming, but you didn't realize it was already taking shape.

"In a month or so we should see the first proposals. You'll be seeing the first rough drafts, and as our expert, you'll be having a voice in recommendations."

The meeting didn't take much longer after that, but one thought is crossing your mind. She seemed to want to wait on Ground Pound earlier - why accelerate things now?

Courtesy of @SITB, here is his recommended template for creating voting plans.

So to make this a LOT easier for everyone involved:

Voting will now be based off of Advisors, followed by which projects they are undertaking rather than the other way around.

So for example:

[EX] Katarina

- [EX] Engineering - Refit

– [EX] Perseus (reduce duration by One Turn)

- [EX] Science - K-Scale Experimentation

– [EX] Shield Potential

This should hopefully make voting a little easier. Pick a project, and slot it underneath each advisor. Remember, two per! (Except for those still engaged)
A Note About Advisors

They work a little differently than before (I'm going to be saying this a lot, but bear with me). Projects and availability are still a thing - you conduct projects after you assign a specific advisor team to them. However, each advisor can now be assigned two projects, letting you cover more ground (and this is my effort to try and avert the option bottleneck that existed before).

The rolling system will be mostly the same: each project will roll 2d6 by default. If you assign someone who you can be reasonably sure would do better at the job (say, Wilde and Henry with anything related to Variable Configuration or Max with Xenotechnology), you will add 1d6. I am not giving success thresholds anymore, as I am taking a new approach to that:

Your advisors are good enough that they will likely succeed at what they're trying to do. The difference now is degrees of success. There will be exceptions (liaison duties, for example, still will have some degree of failure states), but I will no longer cut off options the players want to try based on what they already have or newly discovered. Advisors performing projects where they would reasonably excel at will add 1d6 - those who don't do not get a bonus but can attempt it anyway.

Some restrictions still apply. Aside from Katarina, who still retains her ability to help out wherever she is needed, each advisor still remains within 'their lane.' Sam and Max will always be research, Wilde and Henry will always be engineering. But if the players can justify why someone should be able to cross over, make the pitch and I'll consider it - it just won't be available by default. If a project is also multi-turn, that one action will still remain locked with it until it is completed - but if they still have a free action, they can take on another duty.

Reaction Force Reports: Kaiju

- Sheol's forces have conducted a trade of sorts with the Westphalians - but they've otherwise stayed quiet. If that's their pattern choice now, it might be best to focus on the infiltrators.

-- Adrianna's Notes – As a reminder, boss, we're seeing a trend of infiltrator types attacking Defense Force facilities. Results are kinda…ehh, but they're still happening as part of a growing trend. There's nothing we can really do about it right now, but we'll keep an eye on it!

Reaction Force Reports: Westphalians

- The oil rig was, by all accounts, an automated outpost of some sort – one with heavy hardware showcasing a growing (if still basic) familiarization with Configuration technology. And it took Ocular stowing away to find it. You're not liking the conclusions you're drawing from this.

- There are increasing reports of more standardized Westphalian mecha being encountered by both the Defense Forces and by Valiant. There are still plenty of variations, but it seems as if the Separatists' design teams have had a brainstorm of sorts. Logistician: Which begs the question: where are they getting the resources and manufacturing sites for them all?

Reaction Force Reports: Free Brothers Kausen

- Tyrannous's aims remain mercurial to you. Surely there's something he's looking for beyond material greed?

Reaction Force Monitoring: Additional Threats

- It's been very easy to hyper fixate on the three big threats - they've been causing you and the Earth Union the most grief up till now, after all. But it might not be the worst idea to keep an eye on anything else that might come up.

- Adrianna's Notes – Don't forget, boss. There's…some kind of ship out there on approach. It's probably not going to get here for a couple of months at its current velocity, but I wouldn't put bets on it.

QM Explanation

The Reaction Force Monitoring action is the DFRI's method of finding and detecting problems before they have time to develop into Crises. You will always conduct a basic roll for each specific threat. However, by assigning an advisor to specifically monitor for a particular threat you have a greater than normal chance of finding something or someone and putting them on your radar earlier than if you had not been looking.

By assigning an advisor, you furthermore can have additional details of the threat revealed to you. Even if you find nothing, you will likely learn something additional about the threat in question.
QM Explanation

Deployments are exactly as they sound, and work much the same way. These are threats that you have identified in one way or another, and you may choose to deploy a Super Robot team to deal with it. These do not remain stagnant, however - leave something for too long, and it may develop into a full blown Crisis. Alternatively, one of the other defenders in the world may deal with it on their own - but at the moment, that is not a reliable method of risk mitigation.

At the moment, a new mechanic being introduced is the 'Rapid Response' option to deal with a specific threat. There is no penalty for not going on these missions. These missions will allow Super Robots and Support Teams to get some 'screen time' (think of these as standalone episodes in a show or chapters in a manga) - and there is a chance of encountering additional characters or assets you might not have found otherwise.

  • SCR-01 Beowulf
  • SCR-02 Perseus

Support Teams

  • 3rd Reconnaissance - Jackals
  • 9th Armored Reconnaissance - Phalanxes

  • 25th Marine Air Wing – Seekers [Repairs – One Turn Remaining]
  • 1st Golem Wing – Seekers (Drone AI Test Platforms)

- [] Escort – Oil Rig Cleanup

-- [] With Who?

-- It's rare to see Anna Smith approaching you with a somewhat frazzled look on her face. You also know it's wiser to not poke her about it, and just work with her requirements, as they've kept you out of trouble (mostly) before. This time she's asking for some help with the cleanup procedures, just in case the automated defenses left behind any nasty surprises. She would prefer a dedicated Super Robot to be on standby, but she'll settle for a Supporting unit.

- [] Rapid Response - Free Brothers

-- [] With who?

-- Galbinus is doing his best with the mechs he has at his disposal, but some Free Brothers efforts are going to slip through the cracks inevitably. Configuration models are closing the gap, but it's nowhere close enough - one of your Super Robots or Support Teams could help close the gap.

- [] Rapid Response - Westphalians

-- [] With who?

-- The Westphalians have mostly stuck to the European and East Asian Districts, with the one exception in North America you encountered early in your career. The Defense Forces appear to be getting a better handle on combating them than before, and Erika Drake does her best with the Valiant, but they can only be in so many places at once.

- [] Rapid Response - Kaiju

-- [] With who?

-- Every so often, Mercury V sallies forth to take on more kaiju that the Yukimura Institute can detect long before you can. Perhaps you can lend a hand here and there, even if Hiroki doesn't strictly need it.
Liaison: General Li/GDF

- Topic of Discussion?

- You're not exactly close with the Ground Defense Force general, but there is no doubt that General Li greatly appreciated being the first to field the Centurions. It could be worth your while to follow up and see how they're doing, or if there's anything else that needs doing.

Liaison: Colonel Kim/FRC

- Topic of Discussion?

- Captain Sasaki's recent (if somewhat abrupt) visit revealed a detail you never had confirmed, but had theoretical knowledge of – criminal networks, independent or organized, are starting to go after anything related to the Jackal. Pretty soon, the member states of the Earth Union are going to be dealing with a new type of criminal element – ones armed with configurable mecha. Perhaps approaching Colonel Kim with this in mind will result in a more receptive audience?

- Sasaki's notes – We are ill equipped to try and take this on ourselves. We could empower other elements as a police force of sorts, but this would require approval from both General Peters and Colonel Kim's own superiors. We should think carefully if we bring up this topic, or we might commit ourselves to something we might not be ready to support just yet.

Liaison: Colonel Bernard/MEF

- Topic of Discussion?

- Outside of yourself, Henri Bernard is being sought out now as the closest thing to a subject matter expert on the hilariously rare and valued Seekers that have begun to proliferate in the wider EUDF. You could check in on him to get a better picture of how it's being received.

Liaison: Captain Dana Candler/NDF

- Topic of Discussion?

- You haven't heard much from Candler lately - but the Sergey Gorshkov is all too visible in its growing awareness among the public.

Liaison: Dr. Yukimura/Yukimura Institute

- Topic of Discussion?

- Somehow - somehow - Rin Yukimura and Sam Carlson did not collectively burn down the Kaiju Biotechnology department. Mercury V is being kept busy, and Yukimura himself is polishing off the last of the reconstruction efforts from the Siege.

- Sasaki's Notes - Dr. Yukimura hasn't really had much time to get any updates, but solidifying a line of communication could only help.

Liaison: Mander/MSS

- Topic of Discussion?

- Dr. Dinym has arrived. This action is blocked off this Turn.

- You owe them a favor from a previous operation. Contingent on results from Dr. Dinym's visit.

Liaison: Galbinus-R/Legio Galbinus

- Topic of Discussion?

- The Enclave now has a brand new collapsed tunnel entrance, wreckage from the Predasaur concocted by Scrapheap, a small gaggle of captured Drones handed over to you, and a fresh new coat of crater. There might be more out there, but the Legion is already picking over the remains – perhaps they would be open to some of ours joining them on excavating or analyzing the remains?

- Diana's Notes – Whoever we send is probably going to influence what we find, if anything. Any of my sisters or I will likely result in something more theoretical, while any of our pilots or Super Robots might find some more hardware, and they're going to be committed to this for the month. Your call, sir.

-- Diana's Notes – Delphi's passed on some notes – the Legion's salvagers look like they're in fine form after the recent attack. Galbinus himself is probably busy, but Patch or Herald might be open to go over any insights. That said, he might make time for us if we bring up the topic of the warship on approach.

Liaison: Major Lenora Jenkins/Fulgur

- Topic of Discussion?

- You're actually quite surprised - Ground Pound has undergone a very quick acceleration into the prototype staging. Occasionally named 'Fulgur Robo' (though simply 'Fulgur' in dubious honor of the nightmare fuel that powers it has also been used), Anti-Gravity has now ensured that it's not just the brawler it was meant to be, it's also quick. Jenkins has reached out to invite you to take a closer look.

- Ivanna's Notes – I normally don't poke my head in on these briefs, but Diana invited me over. As a kind reminder, there are some lines of inquiry such as the 'cape' and the Orion Booster idea that we looked into that are somewhat impractical for our teams, but could be of use to Major Jenkins and the Fulgur Team.

Liaison: Write-In

- Topic of Discussion?

- OOC: This is here in case there's a particular agency or grouping you want to try and reach out to. I can't promise it'll be exact, but I'll do my best to come close to something that makes sense in universe.

QM Explanation

These are the known personalities that are, if not friendly to you, at least neutral enough to be willing to discuss things with you. To initiate dialogue, assign an Advisor to the specified contact, and then write in a topic of discussion. This can be anything from floating ideas, to offering additional support, or even giving them information discovered through the Reaction Force monitoring that they can act on (which is usually welcomed). You can also try to work out a trade of sorts if you know they have something specifically that they can offer, but be ready to offer something in exchange if you do.

Construct Super Robot/Support Units

- Write-In Concept

– Piloted or Super AI?

QM Explanation

If you want to make additional Support Units or a new Core Super Robot, this is where you go. As straightforward as this sounds, I will explain further:

Core Super Robots are the basis for new Super Robots. The Beowulf, the Perseus, the Thunderbolt and Ichiro Banner are all examples of this. They can be modified later to stand alone, or be refitted into combination units.

Support Units is a much more broad category. This can cover everything from supporting Combination candidates, to a band of extra guns (such as the Seekers from the previous deployment). This is also a valid option for the creation and dissemination of a brand new frame for potential wider use across the EUDF.

Dropships also count in this respect - building a new Dropship is a much more time intensive endeavor, but the Pegasus has been proven to work as a concept so if you wish to invest your Advisor's time in it, this is where you go.

All of the above must be within your capabilities. You can only produce what you have already researched and developed. The more complex and powerful the idea, the longer it will take. I will promise that nothing will take longer than Four Turns but keep in mind your ideas vs how long it may take to make them a reality.
Refit and/or Repair

- Choose which Super Robot will be chosen for an overhaul, and with which pieces of equipment.

Candidates for Refit

  • SCR-01 Beowulf
  • SCR-02 Perseus
  • Pegasus Dropship
    • Pegasus
    • Sleipnir
  • SCR-03E Thunderbolt
  • SAI-01 Ichiro Banner
  • The Argonauts (SAI-02 Charlie, SAI-03 Frankie and SAI-04 Iris) [Repairs – One Turn Remaining]

QM Explanation

Refit - This is your chance to take newly developed equipment and bolt them onto the Super Robots. A fully repaired Super Robot will typically only take one or two turns at most to incorporate the new additions. This also includes modifying a Core and Support Unit to Combine.

  • Refits will take place on their own once you decide to undergo the option - this will usually take One Turn. Only make it a vote block if a Refit is taking place. Only assign an advisor if you want to increase the speed.
Repairs - If a Super Robot or Support Units mostly comes back with minor damage, it will be abstracted as having been fixed up. More severe damage (such as Perseus's first major outing) will place them into varying states of repair - usually one or two turns. If you are willing to extend their repair time, however, for one additional turn you can also incorporate new equipment and designs.

  • Repairs will happen automatically. However, assigning an Advisor to prioritize the actions will reduce the time required - always by One Turn, and high results will reduce it further. However, they cannot reduce the duration below One Turn.
Experimentation - Practical Applications

- Select Technology Base/Equipment Base

– What do you want to try developing?

– Place this Project option underneath the relevant Engineering/Special Advisor in the Vote Block.

Experimentation - Combinable Configuration

- Currently gains +1d6 from Olympic-class insights (x1)

- Select Technology Base/Equipment Base

– What/who are you trying to get to combine?

– Place this Project option underneath the relevant Engineering/Special Advisor in the Vote Block.

QM Explanation

As a reference, here is a link to your currently known technologies. You are rolling with a bonus based on the expertise of those involved. I am no longer going to restrict you all based on options I strictly provide. If you have the technology at least slightly figured out, then your engineers can run whole-hog with it.

For example, if you want to develop a new type of melee weapon with the K-Fang as a base, write in what you want to try making based off of that. Same for existing technologies - if you want to try refining something based off of Kausen Energy Blasters, write in what you want to attempt. Low rolls will not result in failure - at worst, you will get a mostly functional version of what you were aiming for with some caveats. At best, you will either get something truly spectacular, or something not quite expected. Go nuts. EXPERIMENT.

(I would say for science but this is the wrong department for that)

Delivery Module Rockets

- Jiro has done some work on them so far, but it's not his expertise.

-- Rocket Modules - Equipped with rudimentary guidance systems and designed to carry weapons systems to deliver to Super Robots in multiple clusters. Lightweight, disposable, and not much else.

-- Can be further developed if given time and resources.

Voluntary Combination - The Argonauts

- Ignatov and Henry were rather bemused as they presented this latest development to your desk - the Argonauts have volunteered to undergo a combination similar to what Breakneck, Tracker and Nailhead had done. Ignatov had also brought up the idea with Patch, and the Legion's medic has agreed to assist with the process again if it's greenlit.

Dispersion Zone Adaptation

- Zulu's insights into the Dispersion Zones has yielded enough to try and give this a go. Some brainstorming involved contemplates simply adapting a 'gauntlet' to detonate the daisy-chained charges into a wall of 'go away' which will last for a few precious seconds of protection. Not great, but against those who lack it, it can buy an invaluable few seconds.

Crocalisk Scale

- Ivanna hadn't had much luck using the scale as a hollow pile bunker spike - but nevertheless it's available for any Engineer who wants to try tinkering with it.

Pterawing Leather

- Similarly, the soft yet hardy mesh of the Pterawings are available for those who wish to experiment with it or incorporate it into a new design.

K-Scale Shield

- It's exactly what it sounds like. Melinda's design notes are just as straightforward – an arm mounted shield that maximizes the apparent purpose of the K-Scales for moderate protection. This should not be a complex project to undertake, but it does seem to have potential for multipurpose capabilities beyond just protection.

- Anthony's Notes – Serious? We never came up with this on our own? Well that's awkward.

Handheld Energy Blasters

- This is very much in the 'prototype' stages, but you now have the Union's first downsized Kausen Energy Blasters. Right now, it's cumbersome, and just barely does the job as well as the dedicated blaster packages (both 'standard' and heavy weapons packages) on your Super Robots. But with some additional experimentation, you could make a limited production run.

Super AI Development

– Base AI Personality

– Super Robot AI Personality

– Place this Project option underneath the relevant Engineering/Special Advisor in the Vote Block.

QM Explanation

The Super AI work slightly differently in this version of the new system. As before they all are active characters involved in the story. You still choose a human personality as a template, and then let them develop for a few months/turns before they are ready.

The Base AI Personalities no longer provide bonuses in the same way as the previous quest, but you can still assign them to projects as before. Much like normal advisors, they can provide slight bonuses to what they work on (Lana has a history with prototyping new units alongside Jiro, for example, in spite of/despite their bickering). Without spoiling anything, Base AI development will have more story-based purposes and reasons for developing in the future, but not at this time.

The Super Robot AI Personalities are exactly as they sound. They are tied specifically to a Super Robot Frame, and can be switched around and upgraded via Refit.
Predasaur Remains

- You have the remains of an honest to goodness mechanical T-Rex, courtesy of Scrapheap of the Free Brothers. In addition to the somewhat beaten up reactor 'Heart,' you also have the incredibly charred, broken and scrapped remains of the Predasaur itself. Time for the Engineers to roll up their sleeves and see what they can make out of it.

- Lana's Notes – I'm obligated to remind you, sir. This is a giant robotic dinosaur chassis. Granted it's really beat up and has a giant hole in its chest, but it would be criminal for us to not at least give it an assessment.

'Polyphemus' Wreckage

- Perseus Megas really did not leave much left of the 'Polyphemus.' In appearance, it has the basic form of a Free Brother Drone, albeit one that was roughly one and a half times the size of Perseus's Core unit. The head unit was reported to have ejected, and aside from pieces of wrecked armor plating and what look like Mekaen Blasters, mangled skeletal superstructure remains. It'll take your engineers some time to determine if there's anything worth salvaging or learning from it.

Westphalian Waystation Wardens Wreckage

- Added alliteration aside, the various remains of the automated guardians are not in incredibly great shape – Ichiro and Jessica were quite thorough in destroying them. You have bits of the missile destroyer-turned-crab walker, and ultimately only parts of the cargo freighter could be pulled up from the ocean in any meaningful chunks. But you now have additional examples of the growing Westphalian efforts to copy Configuration technology – and what appears to be some strange, slapdash teleportation technology. Why was all of this here this close to Unity Station? And why was it not manned?

QM Explanation

Any enemy wreckage or equipment you salvage from deployments will go here. Straightforward enough - look at anything unusual they left behind and figure out how it works. If nothing else, it will also show you just how far the enemy are coming along in the arms race this conflict has become.

Empathic Booster and Transmutation

- In the previous month, both Sam and Max came to similar conclusions on different projects. The Empathic Booster does not do a whole lot by itself, at least not with your current understanding of it – but it seems to create a psionic 'bridge' that energy, such as from Transmutation, can cross as a platform. This is extremely theoretical even by the Science Department's standards, but in the short term, it does provide a potential avenue for providing a short burst of hyper charged energy for attacks – or desperate last stand measures. It's going to take both Sam and Max's efforts to discern, however.

ESP Theory

- 'Channeling' Research

– The Channeling phenomenon has legs - and while the actual effect is subtle, its eventual output is something insane. Sam is giddy (or normal - it's hard to tell even after working with him for years) and is eager to pursue this line further.

Kaiju Biotechnology

- Experimentation - K-Scale

– Write-In

– Sam's Notes - You know it, you love it - K-Scale continues to be the best in class for protection. K-Scale Mesh is as far as we've taken it, but there's plenty of ways we could challenge our understanding of it too. Beowulf's got that sword knight thing going for him - why not a shield?

- Experimentation - K-Fang

– Write-In

– Sam's Notes - Solid workshopping from Lana in Engineering! That spear packs quite a punch, and proves that the K-Fang and the K-Scale are yin and yang…for whatever reason. Still, we know what it can do - we could definitely shape some templates to make it faster for the Engineering folks to make something really nasty.

- Experimentation - K-Lung 'Supercharge' Fuel

– Write-In

– Katarina's Notes – It appears that Empathic Boosting can effectively 'supercharge' the existing fuel within a K-Lung fuel cell. If we apply the standard rules of physics, that opens all sorts of possibilities – but Kaiju physiology nor ESP really obey those rules. If we want to incorporate this into something our Super Robots can use, we'll need to do some more testing.

- Experimentation - Olympic-class Leg Sample

– Sam's Notes - Somehow, these suckers overcame the square-cube conundrum biologically. We're short of the other body parts, but now we've got some of the equation literally thrown at our faces - time to see how we can use this to upscale our mechanical men.

- Experimentation - Crocalisk-class Scale Sample

– Write-In

– Ivanna's Notes - We are not likely going to be using the Pterawing gestation method of 'carrier' delivery. If not just on ethical grounds, on sanitary ones. However, despite how brittle and hollow the scales tend to be, it has potential as a weapons or utility delivery pod system of some sort. If we can encourage it to shatter and fragment outwards, all the better. Testing, as we say, is required.

- Experimentation - Pterawing-class Wing Sample

– Write-In

– Ivanna's Notes - The wing sample is odd. It shares some characteristics with not just K-Scale Mesh, but it's also almost smooth enough to count as fabric. In my more whimsical moments, I imagine that with enough Anti-Gravity Solution and a sufficient propulsion system attached to a Super Robot core, we could weave a cape that lets the unit glide in the air for lengths at a time. As it is, I could see the glide potential in a Seeker or other similar airborne unit, but I won't know for sure until we begin testing.

--
Katarina's Notes - If we're going to make something out of this, it's got to be from the ground up. I agree with Ivanna - the Seeker is probably the best fit for it.

– Zulu's Notes - Dispersion 'Charges' provides an avenue into a new hypothesis - that Dispersion Field can be rendered across a volume of space for X time. Current predicament is increasing Y volume of space for increased duration of X. Not enough data on Dispersion Field itself. May require requisition of resources for research.

– Mary's Notes - Very lovely to see I was proven right. Not so lovely to see the naming schemes. That said, the Block now provides a solid baseline for what is possible. I want to go higher, higher, higher! Let's go!

QM Explanation

I am being much more free about how you all do your Science, as you can see from the Write-Ins. For the newly discovered samples, you can leave it as a generic 'what does this do?' or you can poke and prod at it for a specific purpose. For the existing technologies, experimenting with them will let you know the limits of what you can or can't do.

Go nuts, is what I'm saying. The worst I'll do is tell you to try modifying it slightly. I won't answer every specific question about where this leads, but I will give hints.

Aftermarket Special

- It amuses you that after all this time, the military industrial complex has realized that you have this tendency to make like Lazarus and raise ailing weapons platforms from the dead. MSS – Paging Dr. Dinym

- The man himself has arrived. Dr. Marcus Dinym, the brains behind Valiant's core concept of Dinym Currents. He's here to collect – potentially – on finding some kind of technological component within reason that would honor the debt to MSS and balance the books. Assigning an advisor for this action is mandatory this turn.

- Write-In

- Katarina's Notes – Whomever we decide to assign to work with Dr. Dinym is going to ultimately influence which technology we showcase to him. It will be a little more open ended if Melissa or myself guide him around, but we need to give him something that Valiant can use.

- Diana's Notes – The impression I got when I spoke with him last month is that he's looking to make a significant upgrade to the core mechanics. I think he's a little open ended about what he's going to get – it's not like I gave him a catalog or anything – but he might be looking more for something with immediate payoff.

Drone Captives

- You counted yourself lucky when you were able to capture the Drone who would be known as Zulu. Now you have about half a dozen of them, something that you and the Legion are somewhat perplexed by. Talk to them and see what you can learn, or if they'd be willing to cooperate with us.

- Write-In

- Melissa's Notes – So, boss. Yeah. The Drones we captured? I think they're, um, expecting us to do horrible things to them. Delphi kinda thinks that's just what happens to them. Not sure what to do about that, but the bar seems kinda low in our favor.

Deployments

Deployment: Escort Oil Rig Cleanup

It's not often that you find Anna Smith, or the Intelligence Services, focused so intently on a particular objective – but then again, you've never really had reason to see more of what they do. And honestly, for all parties involved, that's probably for the best. You have enough headaches of your own swimming in and out of your capabilities of dealing with, and you don't need to be liable for more.

So you send Anna your best. 1LT Richard Callaghan –if he isn't on track to be promoted a rank before long, he will be after everything he's managed to accomplish – and the Beowulf, including all of its combiner components, are loaded up onto the Pegasus. He offers little in terms of providing extra analysis, but there's fewer people – and Super Robot pilots – out there who you'd rather have in your corner in the event of a fight.

That's why you're sending someone with him for that analysis. With Ocular in tow, you'll get a decent idea of any other surprises the Westphalians have come up with. Though hopefully it doesn't involve yet another god-forsaken teleportation incident. Hopefully you'll get some answers. But in this line of work, you're probably going to get just as many new questions.

You wonder sometimes what Galbinus makes of the crazy technologies that Sheol and the separatists had come up with – and if it would make him, or anyone else from Mekaen, concerned.

Rapid Responses

Rapid Response – Westphalians

It's more than a little overkill – but after what you've found out about Westphalian capabilities, you're feeling justified in sending out the rest of your heavy hitters out. Yes, you've sent out just about everyone out into the field. Really, the only combatants that are staying at home are the Seeker Wing and the Argonauts, and that's mostly to make sure they're repaired. You're not worried about anyone trying to make a grab at your compound per se, but there's no reason to invite trouble, so they're staying behind.

So after some prodding, Diana and Sasaki conclude that sending your rapid response to the European District would be counterproductive at the moment. Valiant already has that well in hand for the most part. But there's been more than a few inroads being built in the North American District, according to what few notes Anna's managed to send your way in between her frazzled focus on the oil rig and the technology therein. It's likely that some infrastructure is in place, just possibly enough to launch some kind of terror attack somewhere in the continental United States.

So you're sending out a big strike force out on a not especially advertised patrol, in order to head off any potential intimidation-by-giant-robots events.

Ichiro and Jessica are both loaded onto the Pegasus, full of confidence and vigor having been properly blooded in combat now. The Jackals of the 3rd Reconnaissance are loaded as well – though amusingly, due to how cramped it's starting to get in the hold, they all have to be loaded like a car park in truck mode, leading to more than a few jokes about being transported like a car dealership.

The 1st Golem Wing. The Golems have barely had any time to acclimate to being around people, but all the same they're being thrown into their first dose of combat. Everything is just new about them that there's a bit of uncertainty about how well they'll perform, how they'll hold up under pressure. But at least Ichiro is there as the senior Super AI to help them along.

He complained about being labeled that. "I'm not old!" was the official complaint.

Rapid Response – Kaiju

On the other hand, this rapid response is just to try and head off a problem before it becomes a bigger one.

Perseus is heading to the Pacific District in order to take the fight to the kaiju, and you've loaded this fist with as much metal behind it as you could comfortably spare. The Perseus is finally being deployed alongside the Phalanxes of the Third Armored Reconnaissance. You remember once upon a time that it was designed to be leading the Phalanxes, but given how much development has taken place it has more than outgrown your older design ideas for it. The halfway prototypes of the First Experimental Wing are tagging along, in addition to the Sleipnir – which is greeted with all sorts of fanfare by Anthony, who wants to see how well the Zirvitium armor sleeves hold up.

Unlike with the Westphalians, who seem to be lying low, you have a fairly decent idea of where the kaiju infiltrators might be trying to attack. No matter the actual methods involved, George Sheol does not tend to be subtle with his overall strategic aims, especially when Mercury V is involved. World conquest and/or destruction seems to be the overall goal, but it seems he has to pass Mercury before he feels he can actually get to that.

Anna is convinced that if nothing else, perhaps seeing Perseus will trigger a response from the kaiju. Not to the same degree that Mercury V does, but Sheol tends to be a vindictive sort, and Perseus played a fairly pivotal part in ensuring that Mercury wasn't destroyed previously. The thinking goes that there might be enough grudge to go around.

Sasaki

Liaison – Fulgur

Sasaki reports that your gifts to Ground Pound felt like giving children all of their Christmases at once. The Engineers are going mad over the sample technologies you're providing – Albert Schemming in particular has plans for the Pterawing sample, especially once he's able to get Forge to program in its physical structure.

At least, once he can draw him away from the Orion Booster plans. While it's not exactly new technology, dating back to the more experimental parts of the mid twentieth century, it's also not readily accessible. Combined with the raw power output that Zhang continues to be able to draw from the Fulgur Particles, the Engineers suddenly have a lot more power and options to play around with.

This is especially noticeable with Victor Forge's nanomachines. It requires some programming ahead of time, but in theory, there is nothing stopping the Fulgur Team from fabricating the Wings or the Orion Booster on the spot. Before, power and mass were the main obstacles – and over the course of a few months, courtesy of your gifts, Anti-Gravity Solution among other things had handily removed the mass issue.

This all comes at a good time – the Fulgur Team is finally being given the opportunity to take on its first mission. Major Jenkins is assured that this will be a low stakes sort of mission – but both she and Sasaki just scoffed with a healthy dose of skepticism. Albeit for different reasons.

"Finally gotten off their arses, have they?" Haruko blinked as she sat in the back corner of the briefing room. Unlike with the Research Institute, the Ground Pound facilities were far more spartan and utilitarian – all of them were inherited from the United States Army, so while they were fit for purpose, there weren't any of the quality of life features she had begun to take for granted either. Quality furniture and functional computer monitors and systems, but that was all.

"Ahh, no need to worry, Smythe." The source of the voice was the man wearing lieutenant's bars on his digital rank badges – apparently Lieutenant Arnold Weller – with hair that had only recently begun to grow back and affecting a somewhat spiky line to it. There was a brash undertone to what was otherwise a steady voice. "We'll take care of it, no problems."

"You say that, sir, but District's got no bloody clue which end is which at times." The more abrasive voice came from Sergeant Vincent Smythe. The older man had blonde hair that seemed on the verge of bleaching into white prematurely, and a prominent scar scratched against his left cheek. "They'll probably keep us here until it's too late to do anything when everything inevitably goes wrong." His face rested on his hand, slouched over on his desk as he was.

The final figure, Sergeant Anya Rodenko, remained quiet – but she seemed to have a calm, unnerving glint to her granite-like eyes as she focused on the briefing slides in front of her. Sasaki had been observing her as well, and as animated as the other two pilots were, the diminutive figure never seemed to make any movement or motion she didn't have to.

"Settle down." Major Jenkins's voice cut through the chatter of the other two pilots. "So, in summary: once Fulgur has had a chance to integrate the new technologies provided by our friends in the DFRI-" She briefly nodded to Haruko, who returned the gesture, before she continued, "-Fulgur will be on standby for quick reaction force duties. The DFRI are doing final cleanup duties on a mission site, and follow on forces are going to be escorting it back to Unity Station. It will be your job to show whoever's stupid enough to stick their noses in what you can do."

"What can't we do?" Smythe laughed. "What're the rest of them for, anyways?"

"To tell everyone else about us." Rodenko's voice was faint, but so incredibly clear. "And set our reputation."

"If they can stomach the nightmares." All three pilots shared some varying degrees of smirks at the thought. Weller's lips spread into a nasty smirk. "What was it this time, fellas? Sank to the core while fully conscious this time."

"Piddling, that. Got sucked out into the vacuum of space while seeing the helmet's glass cracking inwards."

"Paralysis followed by slowly oncoming roadkill by tractor." For some reason, that set off a raucous laugh from all of them – well, an amused huff from Rodenko – even as they filed out of the briefing room, each sharing an apparently worse nightmare to top the others.

Haruko remained quiet as Jenkins approached her – she had never been more thankful that the DFRI's pilots were so normal.

"If anything," Jenkins confided in her, "it would help if you or someone from the DFRI were on hand when the escort duty goes live. The nightmare part alone is going to give us a reputation, alright – probably not anything good, and performance be damned."

"I will pass it along." Haruko replied. "Are…are they alright?"

"Probably not," Jenkins admitted. "But it's their way to cope with the strain. A little bit of gallows humor never killed anyone."

Liaison: EUGDF

"He has a job for us."

Sasaki nods back at you over the holo link. "He does, sir."

"Did he even pay attention to our other notes?" you ask incredulously.

"He did – quite in depth, I might add." Your executive officer pinches the bridge of her nose in exhaustion. "In short – the Centurions, while they are performing admirably and to expectations, are running into the enemy's adaptations."

A new window opens – and you see the weather-beaten face of General Li as he's speaking to Sasaki. "He insisted I record this for you," she adds dryly.

"-and mobility's becoming a growing concern, because some of the Westphalian cells are starting to roll out what looks like a small mecha with wheel-skates under their boots." There's a pause, before he continues, the recorded version of him grabbing at his graying hair, "Yes, I know exactly what I said. Damage itself isn't exactly an issue, but the Westphalians deploy these in numbers, and they're about as mobile as the Jackals, if not more on really level terrain."

The image of the somewhat squat, angular, and yet incredibly mobile Westphalian mecha displays on another window. The center piece is shown slamming with its free hand what looks to be a magnetic shaped charge of some sort, while the other is holding repurposed vehicle support weapons. And, on closer inspection, it does look like they're moving on wheels embedded right below their feet.

"They're pretty smart about it too – honestly it's like they're using light infantry tactics but for piloted robots," Li's voice continues. "Good news is that we're not running into that many of them yet, but I don't expect that happy state of affairs to last. I have our Jackals filling the counter role of screening forces, but there's teething problems – I'm just glad that we're not running into the urban killboxes the other generals have been mentioning-"

"He goes on like this for awhile, sir,"
Sasaki sighs. "I will skip ahead."

"-I normally don't ask for these sorts of things, but I really don't have the forces to spare for this one. I've had some maneuver elements run into skirmishes against the separatists near some of the decommissioned factory zones. None of my scouts can confirm what's in there – one insisted there's armored tanks, another swears on their combined faiths that it's enemy aviation. Whatever is in there hasn't made any outward moves, and I don't have the manpower to spare for it. If you can take care of this for me – well, after that, let's talk about how I can repay the favor to you."

You and Sasaki look at each other. "I think that's probably the most frantic mission brief I've ever had," you comment. "He doesn't ask for much, does he?"

"No, sir. But it should be doable – we will just have to see where we're at by the end of the month."

Diana

Reaction Force Reports – Kaiju

The reason you and your staff are somewhat confident on where to send Perseus and company is what Diana has been able to glimpse in between EUDF reports. The infiltrators have been far more active as of late – though you're wondering if 'infiltrators' is the right word to use for this group. 'Militants' might be better given what you're learning.

Whatever they are, the infiltrators have been launching organized raids against EUDF and JSDF installations. The source of their targets are pretty obvious too – the targets tend to be weapons depots, decommissioning yards, and maintenance facilities. The reports are focusing overwhelmingly on how the converted kaiju humanoids have enough to outfit themselves in a roughly similar manner to light infantry formations.

Logistics: Diana, thankfully, knows you well enough by now to also forward you the property loss documents. And it's painting an even more pessimistic picture than the official line. Heavy trucks, Buckler IFVs, even Jackals earmarked for decommissioning due to faulty manufacturing, have been noted as lost or missing.

Above all, though, there's also note of another 'officer' type, similar to the one encountered at the Yukimura Institute. There's almost no further details, except for the fact that there seems to be one particular figure who seems to be coordinating these strikes as they're taking place. Until you actually face them head to head, however, you won't know any other details.

So you're hoping that your best guess on the next target is correct. The real prize in Japan to strike at would be Sagami Depot. If Diana's right, whoever is leading this force is mostly on a smash and grab run trying to bring equipment levels up to some nominal standard rather than outright conquest.

Hopefully, Perseus can persuade them on how bad of an idea this is.

Reaction Force Reports – Westphalians

On the other hand, the Westphalians have been eerily quiet. Outside of hit and run attacks, and the headaches that General Li mentioned to Sasaki, there's been very little to report. It makes you wonder if attacking that oil rig revealed something that forced some kind of reorganization or reassessment on their part.

So in lieu of any active threats requiring attention, Diana focuses on reports of recently fielded equipment.

The majority of the reports focus on the new 'light infantry' mecha that General Li highlighted. They're new enough that they don't even have a designation or nickname just yet. Small, squat, and boxy mecha, they're nonetheless apparently quite fast and agile. While capable of standard bipedal motion, their most notable trait is the fact that they have either treads, wheels or hover jets (depending on who is reporting) that allows them to move forward at incredible speeds. The only downside to this is that their ability to turn or make sharp corners is not really possible at said speeds, so they do need to slow down.

They otherwise work as advertised – they seem to operate in sections of three to five, and operate like giant sized light urban fire teams.

Logistics – And it doesn't escape your notice that they're far more uniform than before. Unlike the knockoff Jackals, or even the Tank-Mobiles, you could believe that whatever workshops spawned them might actually have replacement parts that work for them. Unfortunately for you, it seems that the Red King can learn lessons – and like any other organization, they're adapting new ideas and equipment to meet new challenges. You're wondering if the introduction of new designs to the EUDF forced a crash course development phase, similar to what Brigadier Peters had you undertake when you started.

For now, however, there's nothing else to report.

Adrianna

Reaction Force Monitoring – Additional Threats

Adrianna, on the other hand, decided to focus on what she did best – being nosy.

The FRC's feedback last month about mecha-based crime was something that Adrianna grew fascinated with. So in going in to investigate, she was curious – surely it wasn't that bad, was it?

As it turns out, no. It's a little worse.

While this seems to be somewhat spread thin around the globe, the North American District seems to be particularly rife with criminals who seem to be able to acquire a worrying amount of Jackals. Part of the problem is the fact that Lone Star Industries – one of the main producers of the Jackals based around Texas and New Mexico – is becoming a favorite target of robberies and hijackings.

It apparently started with just a handful of early generation Jackals, but these criminals clearly have access to workshops capable of changing at least the outlines of the Jackals. Now, similarly to what the kaiju were doing in the East Asia District, they are rather fond of attacking decommissioning yards.

Adrianna estimates that given enough time, 'We'll have Westphalian style mish-mash-monsters knocking over fuel stations and convenience stores.'

That does give you some food for thought, though. You're already stretched very, very thinly, and dedicating time and resources for what should be a law enforcement matter, is not feasible. But what if you could empower the FRC to handle it…?

Liaison – Legio Galbinus

"So…was this a bad time to ask?"

Galbinus stared back at the sheepish looking Oracle Matrix scratching the back of her head as the firefight around them intensified. He barely noticed the blastwave billowing around them, or how Hotwire's hardlight barrier cut it off abruptly.

"Um…you…okay in there?"

"Adri."
Delphi's avatar appeared beside Galbinus's head as two digits rose to pinch the bridge of his nose, his optics dimming as he held off what the humans might call a 'head ache.' "This might have been an awkward time for it, yeah."

Galbinu sighed. "It would explain why the Free Brothers seem so interested in that communications tower."

The Duo

Seeker Super Robot Frame
The Seeker Super Robot frame looks quite different from the standard model that you've grown more familiar with. A lot of it comes down to many different subtle differences that were taking place under the hood. All of the critical internal workings and the technologies you jealously guard for the Super Robots have been installed, and they all somehow seem to be creeping into the externals.

SFC Henry notes that the Seeker is an interesting challenge for one specific reason – there are so many critical moving parts in the Seeker when it changes between jet, buggy and mecha mode, that the joints run the risk of grinding themselves into uselessness at the pace a Super Robot is expected to operate at. So not only is the K-Scale Mesh woven around the weaker parts of the joints and the delicate K-Circuit linings, even more layers are woven and shocked-tightened around the points where the most friction is expected to take place. There's been some false starts on that front, as even Wilde and Henry are finding new spots where they weren't expecting so much wear and tear.

Next is the Anti-Gravity Solution. This is another part where the Duo had unexpectedly run into trouble. They had never run into the problem of 'too much Anti-Gravity,' but that had become a first when a component had been too light and the reconfiguration process had literally mangled itself as the calculations for mass and motion had been thrown off. Thankfully, that issue was resolved, but now apparently the Configuration process is having it twist around in different ways than the standard.

Finally, the Zirvitium. This is where the most pronounced difference was taking place. Somewhere along the way, extra Zirvitium layerings had been put in as a placeholder to see how it would work and fit practically, with the understanding that there wasn't really a power source to produce enough power to move or even fly. But they had reckoned without the Faedium Block Engine – and now the chest is even bulkier, protecting the new beating heart of the Super Robot.

They're not done, nowhere close – but now they have a working frame, and now it's just running tests and simulations to make sure it doesn't fall apart or explode or something.

Though Henry brings up another good point: until you find a suitable candidate to Combine this thing with, much like the Thunderbolt this thing is flying solo. Even Wilde had put his foot down on recommending against using the Sledder. While the Seeker Super Robot can probably fight on the ground, it wasn't the best idea to limit it to the ground, and the ground-based vehicles will keep it chained there.

Also: Who is going to pilot this thing? While finding a human pilot will take some time, Wilde tentatively wonders if they could also use a SAI Pilot for it.

There's one final month left for finetuning.

One Turn Remaining. Decision Pending at next turn.

Mega Blaster Sledder (SAI-01 Banner)
"So the…Buster Pack? Buster Armor? Banner Buster? Oni Pack? What are we calling this thing? Anyways, we made it work!"

That's the official tag line report from 1LT Wilde. Thankfully, SFC Henry helpfully fills in the gaps as usual.

The Buster Pack that Lana designed was based off of a single Sledder unit combining with Ichiro's body. However, it had stretched itself a tiny bit thin, and the combat performance increases, while very welcome, was not as high as it could have been. As it stands, it adds a new modular head guard, forearm gauntlets and bracer boots along with a chest plate and a backpack unit.

What this addition to the Pack does is add bulk, and guarantees a tiny bit more protection to the relatively vulnerable joints.

This Sledder effectively combines with the original unit to detach itself into armor plating, slotting along the torso and the rest of the arms and legs that the original didn't cover. However, the real prize is the augmentation to the cannon arm. Up until now, it had fired with some augmented power. Now a power pack effectively forms at the base of the arm that links directly by wire-guided cables to the backpack unit, giving it a relatively similar punch to the Mega Blaster wielded by Perseus Megas.

It's big, it's bulky, it's a little unwieldy. But that works for Ichiro.

Just have to work on a name, though Ichiro's been liking some of the ideas the staff have thrown around.

Complete! SAI-01's Buster Pack upgraded to Buster Armor. Name pending.

Build Team

Perseus Sledder Pilebunker Upgrade
"This is weird, right? This is weird. I'm not just imagining it, am I?"

Those were Kelly's words as the final upgrades to Perseus Megas's Sledder components are complete. The K-Lung and the Empathic Booster proved to be somewhat tricky to install compared to the relatively straightforward K-Fang and Zirvitium components. But Kelly had come up with the solution:

The cylindrical cartridge already in use.

Almost insultingly simple in theory, if not in practice, the Build Team had found that there was still quite a lot of room to play around with, so rather than try and spend too much more time trying to worry about the K-Lung's longevity, they decided to accept its limitations like any other ammunition source.

So with the cylindrical cartridge already in use for the K-Fang Pilebunker spikes, they added another cartridge right in front of it. Rather than just be limited to electrical shock, they added multiple one-time use elemental 'coating' charges, which would only be activated once the Pilebunker penetrated it on the way to burying itself into the enemy. Fire, frost, and, naturally, acid now have their place alongside the traditional electricity.

That's not what's weirding out the Build Team. What's weirding them out is the fact that after installing the Empathic Boosters and wiring them to the Perseus's core cockpit, debugging proved to be a nightmare as they kept registering a presence already interfacing with it. When Zhang and Tellison were brought out to interface with the Booster, they felt it too. Yet rather than panic, they seemed to welcome it.

Which led to Greg's next question: "Is Perseus alive?"

Complete! Perseus Megas can now field 'Elemental Pilebunker.'

New Engineering Option Unlocked

Questions of Perseus's sentience abound.

Enemy Wreckage Analysis (Polyphemus)
By comparison, analyzing the 'Polyphemus' is a breath of fresh air and normality for them. In fact, they complete it well ahead of schedule – though according to Greg and Anthony, that's not exactly in praise of their own abilities. It's more a reflection of what this thing was.

It's…a Drone. A very, very giant sized version of Zulu or the prisoners you took custody of, but appropriately sized and armored (albeit missing quite a few chunks courtesy of Perseus). Your teams have already analyzed the Drones and are familiar with Zulu's overall body structure, so it was simply a matter of scaling up.

A Drone by itself is nothing special. A basic torso, arms and legs – if you understand even vaguely how a humanoid structure works, you're sixty percent of the way there. The internal workings are a bit more interesting – the inner mechanics of the Drone body are a mixture of mechanical joints and gears, and Shard pump lines analogous to the blood vessels of the human body which all link to the single reactor in the uparmored chest. Normally this would all be operated by the 'brain,' or at least the processor chipset mounted in the head unit.

Which is very obviously missing. This model never had the traditional method, but it was where a pilot had performed the same role before it had ejected. So there is a very clean and straightforward break where the head used to be, along with plenty of ports and connections that Greg had managed to figure out pretty quickly.

Greg's analysis of it is that it's very easily fixable. "We've got the Zirvitium and the knowhow to patch it up no problem," he promises you. "Just…what do you want to do with it, boss?"

Which is another question in and of itself. If you can't make use of it or don't have time for it, you're very certain that Peters knows someone who would. And if you find that you have to give something up to help what you suspect is a wider EUDF expansion of the Super Robot program, you have an offering ready.

Analysis Complete. Giant Drone Body acquired.

Jiro Yukimura

Funnels
Jiro is very proud of what he's accomplished, especially since it draws from radically different technology bases. The 'Funnels' are by themselves very simple things, but they had a very complicated and hair tearing journey to get to that simplicity.

They're small (for a Super Robot) arrowlike contraptions with one of the smallest power sources he could find, so small that the tiny engine it sports has enough power only for a few bursts of motion before it runs out entirely. What it does have are extendable wings repurposed from Pteradon leather, which gives it a disproportionate amount of lift and drag midair, enabling it to make the most out of the limited engine power available to it.

Finally, Jiro's added his own past creation – the directional laser blaster. The Funnel only has so much space left over, so taking a page from the Build Team's project that month, he packs just enough power packs to enable at most three shots before it has to return to recharge both its engine and its 'ammo.' Combined with the erratic motions, you have a point defense weapon that can fire from just about any angle as a result.

"By itself? It's not that special," he admits. "But get a lot of these out there in the air, and you'll give them something to worry about. Controlling this many at once is going to be an interesting problem to overcome, though…missile pods, maybe?"

Complete! Funnels now available to repurpose into Super Robot weapons.

New Engineering Options unlocked.

Saddle Super Robot Combiner
The Saddle is very much a product of its time – much of the internals are either dedicated to the engines, wiring and electronics, or the cargo space.

The Faedium Block, however, solves a lot of space problems. Jiro's found that he is able to remove most of the engines from the rotary blades and fuselage, leaving far more room for Configuration into, say, arms. Likewise for the cockpit and the cargo space, it naturally forms into space where a Super Robot frame could neatly slot into and serve as impromptu armor.

Jiro isn't done, but this is a promising lead.

One that he begrudgingly thanks Lana for.

You can feel the smug from the Engineering databases from your office.

One Turn Remaining.

EAI-01 Lana

Enemy Wreckage Analysis (Predasaur Remains)
According to Lana, the Predasaur, as Scrapheap had called it, is exactly what you expect it to be. It's the Free Brothers' best imitation of a stylized Tyrannosaurus Rex – and for whatever reason, it had more or less behaved the way experts would expect one to. The main differences are that it could breathe fire, is entirely mechanical, and actually had longer arms making it resemble a dragon a tiny bit more. That and the (mostly now broken) Zirvitium teeth.

That said, Lana is quite impressed with its construction. "Props to whoever made it," she admits. "Beowulf exploded it, and there's still enough of it left over that it's salvageable." That answers the unspoken next question – Lana is confident the Engineers can rebuild it and repurpose it within a short amount of time. They just need the time and resources to make it happen.

The other part of the Predasaur is more of an open question. The 'Heart' reactor is an odd contraption. From what Lana can tell without doing invasive probing of it, it's an incredibly compact Shard reactor – the Predasaur would devour energy sources (if not Shards outright), and it would be 'digested' into the Heart reactor which would process it into bursts of energy.

But that's all she can tell you about it right now. "You've got some choices with it right now, boss," she tells you. "Either I can take it apart, and figure out how it works, but we'll lose this one…or we can just plug it into a unit and have it work, but that's all we get." She pauses, adding, "Though I'm pretty sure the Legion wouldn't mind getting its hands on it."

Complete! New Defense Forces/Engineering Options available next turn.

Weapon Experimentation: Tyrant's Bane
"You want me to do what? With what?"

To be fair, you and Sasaki had given Lana a combo platter of features to stuff into a K-Fang weapon with the instructions to 'make it happen.' Possibly with demonic summoning and magical rituals. But to your surprise, it's not outright impossible.

In theory, all of the features you want to include for the Beowulf are feasible. The only issue with it is actually figuring out how to source all of it mechanically. She flat out dismisses the possibility of putting it all into the weapon itself – there's just not enough room, and remains a physical impossibility. But, knowing that it's the Beowulf – and more than likely, specifically the Beowulf Fenrir – simplifies things. She's just going to have to outsource some of the work to the Super Robot rather than the weapon.

By the time you leave, she's already trying to theory craft how to make it work, but she warns it's going to take her a few months.

Two Turns Remaining

Boris Ignatov

AI/ESP Guidance System
Ignatov confirms that psychic energy and SAI do not mix. It's literally impossible for them – and by extension the Kausen – to perceive them. ESP energy could be flowing in front of their optics or sensors, and unless there was a physical consequence to it they wouldn't even realize it.

The one workaround that he's managed to find reliably works is to use the human side of the MMI as a 'translator' of sorts. Since SAI requires data of some sort, the brain translates the perception of ESP and intent into tangible data points through traditional computing software, which then gives the SAI something it can actually use.

Which then begs the question – what does that make Perseus if not some kind of sentience?

Engineering Bay

"Truly?" Boris asked. "Your work was actually accepted prior to the Valiant?"

"Electric power is electric power." Marcus Dinym shrugged as Boris escorted him from Major Devin's office in the Command Center. "Unlike most of my peers, thankfully mine is a field that politicians are familiar with. Even if they turn it down, they at least know enough about it to listen to my proposals. None of them use the actual Dinym Currents Valiant does, but the basic principles retooled to infrastructural power are there."

"But how did that bring you to-?"

"To Charles?" That topic prompted a laugh out of the old man. The man's hair had long since lost the fight to old age and was a ragged mix of salt and pepper – now it seemed as if his body was just fighting to keep his head from balding. An impressive beard extended down to his chest, giving the impression of some old sage from a storybook. "Oh, that was an easy decision. Knew him long before he went gallivanting into the Royal Navy. I just was tired of having to convince another pack of lackwits on the efficacy of my designs, then Charles comes along like the mad lad he is and made an offer. Seemed interesting, so I took him up on it."

Boris nodded, filing away the information for later. So far, Dinym seemed more content to answer questions about himself rather than his work – and, more importantly, what he seems to be really hoping to get out of this visit. It just bemused him that he had been chosen to show Dinym around. He had thought that Lieutenant Wilde or Sergeant Henry would have been the natural choices, but the Commandant had different projects he had prioritized for them. Dr. Carlson or Dr. Brand would have been other natural choices, but there were some concerns over letting even an ally see the secrets behind K-Class Materials or Xenotechnology too soon. Even young Mr. Yukimura, but he too was busy – and Boris noted with some satisfaction that he was able to overcome the conundrum of the Funnel project where he couldn't.

So that left him. And the unfortunate question was what he would show him.

He was fairly certain that Dr. Dinym would see not just some of the Golems left behind, but possibly any visiting members of the Legion, or even the Sisters. They were so ubiquitous across the facilities that not calling on them was growing more and more unthinkable by the day. On the other hand, while they had certainly made great strides in the more mundane computational networks as his original commission had demanded…

…it all felt just a slightly bit dishonest, didn't it?

He could offer to provide a more rudimentary version of the Sisters, help to facilitate an intelligence more like that of Delphi. Perhaps the Man Machine Interface (at least some pared down version of it), or something along the lines of the Golems as AI support for the Valiant…something. Or he could do his best to try and explain the other Engineering principles, though he himself wasn't the most well suited for it.

What to do? What would Boris show him?

This vote will run for a few days. What does Ignatov show him? Choose ONE.

QM Note: A bit of a smaller update, but here you will choose what Ignatov chooses to showcase to Dinym. Think about what you know about Valiant, what you think would best help it and what you think Dinym would be interested in. But also remember who his host is, and what he's been good at so far.

Paging Dr. Dinym - Pt. 2
Work trip I couldn't get out of combined with catching COVID right afterwards, so this is why you're getting this post really late. Sorry for the delay all.

"Controls."

"Pardon?" Boris looked to Marcus from their position at the Proving Grounds. In the end, he'd decided to something nice and neutral that Major Devin had already set precedent for – show his guest the training conducted by the mass production units. Truthfully, it was more of a ploy to buy himself some time to think about what he was going to introduce Marcus to – but it turned out that the brains behind the Valiant were also quite perceptive.

"The controls." He waved vaguely towards the Jackals whose pilots were undergoing introductory training. "The movements." Even when most of their formations had already left, Captain Sasaki had clearly thought that sending everybody was not particularly wise. So small guard elements of each company had remained, including those undergoing basic piloting familiarization. And from their position in the elevated spectator stands, and behind the greatly strengthened armor glass, Dr. Dinym saw something that had caught his attention.

"Alright, Rivera." The instructor's voice filtered in through the cockpit, even as his own Jackal was standing fully Configured right in front. "One more time from the top. Don't worry about messing up, just watch the arms. The Steed layer will keep you safe, and we go through training units all the time anyway. Keeps the Engineers busy."

"Roger. Reconfiguring now." Why did I think this was a fun career choice!? Lisa Rivera grit her teeth as both feet slowly pushed down on the pedals as she pulled both control sticks sixty or so degrees backwards – and immediately felt the lurching sensation of the Jackal's rear components sliding forward, kneeling when there had been no knees before, and the cockpit lifting upwards.

"Easy, easy now," the instructor warned. "Easy-!"

But it was already a bit late – the control sticks chose that moment to abruptly loosen to reflect the fact her Jackal's arms were already starting to unfold outwards, and she instinctively pulled even further, accelerating the speed of the cockpit's elevation, which then had her practically stomp on the pedals.

"Ohcrapohcrapohcraaaaaaaaaa-!" The extra pressure on the pedals saw the Jackal's sense of balance swing off wildly, and the Jackal's arms began to flail wildly as Lisa fought to regain some sense of balance. She could see the other Jackals around her rapidly back away, their own motions clumsy and inelegant as they tried to avoid getting involved in the collision. The whole world seemed to swerve as her own began to stomp around in an unbalanced and undignified drunken lurch. But finally, gravity had its say – and the Jackal crashed down to the ground, covered in an explosion of dust and grit.

Only then did her head unit finally emerge from the top of the cockpit, now far more dented and deformed due to the rocky Configuration process.

"I warned you about the arms, Rivera," the instructor said. It might have just been her, but she could swear the instructor was trying not to laugh. Not that she was in any state to call him out on it – she was pretty sure her eyes were nothing but swirlies and stars. "Now's a great time to show you how to Reconfigure back to vehicle mode from this position…"

She didn't even bother to mute her mic as she groaned in frustration.

"Those controls are stiff," Marcus commented. "I've seen the recordings Beowulf and Perseus in action." One hand tugged at his beard as he watched the fallen Jackal sluggishly Reconfigure back into vehicle form. The Jackal's form was sluggishly trying to fold its limbs back into place, albeit with not too much success as the torso attempted to twist back into place while lying face first on the ground. "The controls there are all mechanical. There's none of the fluidity of motion that I saw in your Super Robots."

"An interesting observation," Boris replied. He gestured for Marcus to follow him, but he didn't say anything further than that just yet. "And how do you think the Super Robots have managed it?" He was genuinely curious if Marcus had figured it out, or if at least he had some kind of hypothesis rattling around in his brain.

"Despite how the greater mass would inhibit the humanoid form in motion, Beowulf – and to an extent Perseus – move too naturally compared to that," Marcus commented. "I would imagine some kind of predictive interface…" The doctor's face grew thoughtful as he tilted his head, his eyes somewhat unfocused as Boris recognized the signs of someone doing mental math in real time. "…a harness mimicking the pilot's motions?" he guessed. "No, no, that does nothing to account for the vehicular modes…perhaps if the cockpit itself shifted…?"

Boris allowed Marcus his mental musings – at least until he brought him to his own workshop. The 'Lair,' as Lieutenant Wilde had so colorfully labeled it, had (for better or for worse) stuck as the nickname for the massive server farm that served as the beating heart of information flow across the DFRI. He could feel Marcus's concentration break as he beheld the buzzing activity beneath the catwalk that overlooked the servers. The various technicians, many of whom had been present since the university grounds were nothing but dilapidated ruins, scurried to and fro. Occasionally, Katarina's hologram materialized, often in several different places at once, as she helpfully resolved whatever issues the technicians were encountering as they oversaw maintenance of the delicate machinery.

Marcus might be interested in some of that, but Boris had a specific destination in mind. "You weren't far off," he confirmed to the brain behind Valiant as he brought him to one of the smaller workshops not in use. A mechanical frame, appearing skeletal in appearance, stood on a spherical treadmill next to a Man-Machine Interface helmet. "But this-" He hefted the helmet, presenting it to Marcus, "-is the secret behind the motions."

The MMI helmet had gone through several different iterations. Now, with K-Class Materials in mind, it appeared like a slightly oversized combat helmet. Non-intrusive sensor pads mixed with the lining of the inner helmet, mostly hidden beneath the crash padding placed for pilot safety (and comfort ostensibly, but that was debatable). This model was not wireless, but had a hardline that connected to the computer terminals and controls next to the skeletal test frame.

"Translating brain activity to motion?"

"Essentially," Boris agreed, deciding that discussing the intricacies of Sam's ESP theory was a bit too much of an information dump right this very moment. "Here. Give it a try. The MMI translates abstracted thought and intent into motion. It works like thus…"

An hour had passed, and Boris had a feeling that Marcus was quite intrigued by the MMI.

At first, the motions had been halting. Even as his fingers manipulated the controls, articulating each finger one by one on the frame's hands before instinctively clenching a fist, there was a hesitancy about his motions. As if he couldn't quite believe that he had such control without quite knowing how he was doing what he was doing.

But soon, the frame was walking, the treadmill keeping up with his motions. The cranial unit was looking around, the torso twisting left and right as Marcus's intents continued to be translated into kinetic motion. Hesitance soon turned to muted joy as the frame soon broke into a sprint, taking leaps that were only restrained by the nature of the test unit (and not wanting a few tons of solid metal to leap over the treadmill and crash into expensive equipment – Boris was not having a repeat of that incident).

Soon, the test wound down, and Dr. Dinym's hands were trembling slightly as he took off the helmet. "I think," he said thoughtfully, "that this will work quite well for the Valiant…but." He frowned as his thoughts continued to glide across his head. "The fact that the Valiant's limbs are mostly independent and held only by the currents might have…problems for Erika's nervous systems. How have-?"

His question paused as he realized how much he was trembling. "You're not the first one that's happened to," Boris said kindly as he took the helmet back from him and placed it back onto the rack. "But to answer your question – you're experiencing the feedback right now. The pilots do feel some measure of the damage. However, the feedback is…banked, for lack of a better word. They are 'wearing' the body of the Super Robots more than being the Super Robots. But once they take it off, post-battle fatigue sets in. I'm told aching, headaches and a strong desire for sleep are common."

Mostly because of how far the pilots pushed their limits or refused to back down in the face of an overwhelming threat.

"I will have to look into that," Marcus muttered to himself. "Does this conclude what you wished to show? Or is there anything else?"

Paging Dr. Dinym - Pt. 3
We're back. Had a lot of personal things I had to resolve. Thankfully I think we're in a better spot now - and more importantly, I regained the motivation to write. You lose all motivation to do what you used to love when you're feeling at your lowest.

New art inbound as well, so stay tuned for that.

"Good afternoon, Dr. Dinym!" Marcus watched in fascination as within a split second, the hologram of a young woman materialized over Boris's desk terminal. She was stylized in the same Defense Force uniform that was so ubiquitous among the Engineering noncombatant staff, albeit personalized in red colors with white highlights. But for the fact that she was a complex computer program bound together with code algorithms working in unison, she appeared very much the spitting image of the typical young woman down the street some of the young lads would pine over. "My name is Katarina, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

"A pleasure, lass," Marcus replied, nodding his head respectfully. "I heard…some rumblings about one of your fellows from Erika, but it's quite something to meet one myself. Tell me, what is your job here?"

"I'm the administrative assistant program across the whole campus." Multiple screens expanded around Katarina's avatar, showcasing different parts of the facilities – and were all in real time as far as Marcus could discern. "Anytime anyone on base needs assistance, or if there are specific projects that need my help, I'm there!"

"Are there…others like you?" Marcus asked. It didn't escape his notice that Boris was standing off to the side, beaming like a proud father. Or a protective father. The man's posture was both rigid and yet relaxed all at once, as if he was trying not to hover over his daughter's presence too much (which was ironic, given that Katarina was very much the one hovering in this mangled metaphor).

"My sisters are here as well!" Katarina exclaimed, with enough bubbly energy that Marcus could bloody well swear that rainbows and flowers would start glittering around her at any moment. "I can't wait for you to meet them!"

She paused – then her smile grew a bit more strained. "Just be aware that we all have our own personalities, they're not all like me."

"How so?"

"Well…you'll find out!"

"So…like, I could give you a map if you wanted directions?"

"That would be helpful, lass," Marcus agreed, "thank you."

"It would? I mean, of course it would! Great!"

SAI-02 – Melinda – was an immediate proof of truth to Katarina's words. Where Katarina was bubbly, cheerful, and helpful, Melinda appeared awkward, fidgety, and almost nervous, all while her processes were running at veritable mad minutes. Where Katarina's hair was neat and flowed with uniformity, Melinda's was frizzy and frazzled, her glasses gleaming in digital light. "So, we could get you directions – oh! Ooh! You probably want to go the Engineering Bay, right?" Additional informative windows began to appear hanging around Marcus's head.

"Well, yes, but-"

Another window soon formed next to his head. "So then I can find the optimal route for you to sidestep all the traffic-!"

"Now, hang on-"

Now a score more were starting to materialize. "-but you might want to see some of the stuff, so maybe I could route you also past Xenotechnology-"

"Really, now, lass, there is-"

"-time for more things, I know! So how about I give you some more information just in case-!"

"Boris, help!" At least, Marcus was reasonably certain that Ignatov was still out there beyond the swirling prison of informative holo windows-!

"-I told you you were putting too much damned power through the primary drive, Clown!"

"Well, how the hell else are you supposed to get propulsion in this damned thing, Shorty!?"

"Maybe if you actually wired the generator instead of stuffing more batteries into there? You can't just make every system independent, that's wasteful!"

"Yeah, sure. Or maybe all that power draw is just gonna make the damned thing explode mid-flight!"

Marcus very much felt like he was being shepherded through different extremes. From the manic energy of Melinda to the dour and cantankerous personality belonging to Lana, the Engineers' Super AI personality. Long, unkempt hair framed a woman wearing dirty engineering fatigues, her own face smeared with a facsimile of oil grease and soot – all while staring down the nephew of Dr. Rin Yukimura - and appearing just as irate as the man she was currently engaged in a blueprint standoff over.

Yet Marcus watched in fascination as a new copy of the blueprint designs appeared to the side, with parts of the designs being rewired and recalculated in real-time. "What I'm saying is that you can take those independent systems, but stagger them around the main generator, see? That way, you have redundancy-"

"Oooooh. Wait, what if we did it like this then?" Jiro Yukimura's hands began to reassemble the power assembly unit of the strange, dart-like device they were working on. "Think we could add in an emergency siphon unit? That way, if it loses power, it can draw from the main unit in a pinch-"

"Too tiny for a Block. Cube? Whatever, Faedium isn't small enough for this yet-"

"Good to think about, though. What if we-?"

Marcus never interrupted their brainstorming. Yet with both arms crossed behind the back of his waist, he continued to be escorted by Dr. Ignatov, a thoughtful expression on his face.

"It can be a little exhausting, if I'm honest." Ivanna appeared as tired as she seemed to sound. Appearing like a young woman and appearing very much like the many young interns run ragged in university while trying to write their own theses, Ivanna looked as if she had slight bags under her eyes. She appeared to be dressed in the scientific uniform of personnel found in Earth Union facilities, a small beret tucked atop her head, and with long brown hair framing her back.

"I have heard that Doctors Carlson and Brand can be…challenging," Marcus opted to say in sympathy. "Are they quite so bad?"

"What-? Oh, no, no," Ivanna tried to laugh off, waving her hands frantically. "No, it's not them. I'm used to their quirks by now."

"Then what…?"

"It's how they break the laws of physics."

The transition from cheerful young woman to the low tone of the blunt delivery took Marcuss off guard. "I have all of the libraries of the assembled nation-states of the world, and Unity Station, about how things should and shouldn't work." The digital air around Ivanna started to take on a sinister bluish hue, even as the exhausted smile never left her face. Yet her eyes were matching the very same hue. "I could even account for the impossibilities of kaiju physiology as a new field of study! But there are some projects which I cannot disclose that have decided that they can simply break the most fundamental laws of physics, and that. Greatly. Upsets. Me."

Marcus turned to Boris with a worried look, yet the older engineer didn't seem to be concerned. In fact, he had an amused look on his face as Ivanna, never once losing her composure, continued to vent about having to balance the many personalities that clashed within the department, or how her predictive algorithms or mathematical models seemed to do very little in the face of the impossibility of super robots.

Marcus decided right then and there that he wouldn't tell her about his own research. It might have upset her more.

"-and that's how we tracked down those smugglers!"

"You know you don't have to brag, Adrinna."

"C'mon, Diana! I don't get to tell this story enough to someone new!"

The last two personalities shown to Marcus were…well, comparatively normal. If a bit much. He had remembered how Erika described a computer program who was 'adorable, once you accept she's the annoying younger sister who latches onto you.' Once Adrianna had found out that he worked with Erika, he had immediately been dubbed 'a cool guy' and the uniformed young woman with the short bob cut of hair and a permanent grin on her face wouldn't stop hanging around him.

In contrast, Diana was far and away the most normal. Similarly short-cut hair (albeit blonde) and a similar uniform in the fashion similar to the Defense Forces. Yet she held herself rigidly, her hands clasped behind her back as she simulated walking alongside Marcus and Boris, her own statements far more matter of fact and to the point. Charlie would get along with this one, if nothing else.

"You both have interacted with people outside of the Institute quite often," Marcus ventured. "Do you find it odd or uncomfortable at all?"

"Nope!" Adrianna's answer was immediate. "Super easy! They let me talk my piece and don't interrupt me too!"

"Mostly because you bowl them over by being
you, Adrianna," Diana said dryly. "My answer: it can be a little challenging. I never know when people might react…poorly to me being an AI." Diana's head lowered, deeper in thought. "So far, they have been accepting, but I don't know if everyone will react that way."

"And they likely won't, child," Boris said gently. "It's not suspicion you're feeling, it is caution and wariness. Not everyone will react well to what you are – but you must win them over with who you are."

"But we're awesome, doctor!" Adrianna pouted as she floated over to Ignatov's shoulder. "No one else can do what we do!"

"And that is why people may fear you," Boris said sadly. "But it is my hope that you all will be treated the same way as anyone else – as people."

"Well. I think I've made up my mind."

Boris looked at his guest curiously. He had been preparing to show him more, but it seemed that the engineer had decided to end the tour here. "Truly? And your thoughts?"

"The MMI and…whatever means you use to create an AI," Marcus said slowly. "Either would help the Valiant immensely. Having both would drastically change Valiant for the better." He exhaled. "I know I'm asking the dragon's share of things, but if we could possibly get both…well, I imagine Charlie will get on his knees and praise the glory of governmental investment."

"We don't need to go that far," Boris replied hastily. "But we will honor the minimum of the bargain called…shall we follow up next month?"

"Likely for the best, aye." As they walked towards the landing bay, Marcus Dinym's eyes stared down again towards the mechanical bodies conducting work below. His eyes had immediately locked onto the dull green form of Ichiro as he was holding a piece of equipment in place, long enough for one of the new Golems to do something with its wiring. He appeared to be straining against the load slightly, all while grinning and shoving back when the load didn't threaten to unbalance him.

"Rather lifelike," Marcus muttered. But then he turned back to the dropship. "Be seeing you, Boris. We'll stay in touch."

New Engineering Options unlocked next turn.

Mander Security Solutions are very interested in the MMI and the Super AI projects.

Interlude - Well this is awkward...
"...Sasaki. I'd like to have a word with Galbinus before we initiate operations. I think he should probably know about this..."

"Of course, sir. We can send Adrianna to convey the message."

"It'll be a cinch, boss! I'm sure they're not too busy right now!"

The alarm klaxons blared loudly in the enclave. "Legion ready crew, report to stations." Herald's dispassionate, monotone voice boomed across sensors, the sound seemingly shaking along the surfaces of the purple walls and flooring rather than through the air like traditional sound. "This is a priority alert. Legion ready crew, report to stations. This is a priority alert-"

The alarms were soon joined by the swearing voices of mechs roused from their downtime cycles, some far more cohesive than others. The ungainly black-clad bulk of Nailhead stumbled out of his massive berth, tripping over the ledge and falling flat faced with a shuddering impact. The floor continued to shake and groan from the additional impacts of his massive fists slamming onto the floor as he forced himself back up to his feet – only for him to slam his head against the ceiling. "Ow!"

"Cmoncmoncmonwegottogogogogogo-!" A silver and grey sequence of moving still-shots was already dashing through the halls. The kinetic module was already warming up, the circular drive inside of the manic mech's back spinning faster and faster. Nailhead soon found that his trusty rivet hammer was already propped up next to his berth along with an energy shard, as Breakneck was already up and ahead of everymech else as per usual.

"Thanks, kid." An arm had held up an empty palm, only for the silvery brush of air to pass by, and an ancient long rifle lovingly maintained through constant laser scrubbing as his hand gripped firmly on the stock. The dull red weathered form of Tracker, with the provided shard clenched between his teeth, shouldered the long rifle and pulled back the charger handle with slow, practiced ease, making sure the chamber was empty before releasing, and then racking the lever forward with a satisfying clack. "Alright, you sparkheads! Galbinus needs us! And the Legion's damned well gonna answer!"

"…that might be a bit awkward right now."

Adrianna's eyes twitched slightly, even as a bright smile was plastered across her avatar's face. "Why's that?"

Delphi's avatar buzzed slightly. She seemed to have taken a page from Herald's refusal to take on a Configuration – she still remained as a featureless circle that shifted colors slightly. Adrianna had always found that a bit weird, but she never said anything about it either – honestly, it was her choice to take on a more fanciful form or not.

"The Free Brothers just made a rather sizable incursion." The Oracle Matrix transferred a feed showing live footage, along with geographic data tucked away in the corner. "Something just prompted a pretty sizable incursion against a communications tower of all things."

"Why do you suppose that is?"
Well, Adrianna had a pretty good idea why – she found the big space box thing after all! – but she wanted to know if Delphi or the Legion had already caught on.

"Unknown." Well, nevermind. "But they almost never move in with this much force. Highway, Throughput, Smelter, Quarry, Cross…even Rangefinder is on the field leading. But there's no significant energy source in the area, that tower is only rated for burst transmissions…"

"Well…"
Delphi's avatar turned to face Adrianna's as a sheepish grin crossed her face, both of her fingertips poking against their opposing hand's digits. "…we detected something on long range scanners and we wanted to talk to Galbinus about it…?"

"Adri."
Adrianna's sheepish grin widened as she heard the familiar tone of someone who recognized Adrianna was making their day much more complicated. "What did you find?"

"Funny story, that! You see, what happened was…"

The glass framing the outside portcullises of the human buildings shuddered a moment before impact. Galbinus could detect it – the microcycles between the point of impact, and the moment the vibrations rippled through them.

Said moment later, as his massive form landed into the embattled zone, he could feel his feet – incredibly massive compared to the scale the humans built to suit their smaller forms – slam into the reinforced and refined igneous liquistone, before raw weight and kinetic trauma ripped through, leaving giant gouges where he stood. As his right fist collided with that of Throughput's faceplate, the millions of vibrations that rippled outwards from the kinetic strike struck the surrounding buildings, and tore directly into the structural integrity of the 'windows' – and glass exploded outwards, thousands upon thousands of glittering shrapnel catching the light of Solaris's primary star as physical force and gravity forced Throughput down onto the concrete pavement, creating a Kaus-shaped crater as the ground shook with even more structure-shaking force.

Without pausing, with his cannon forearm leading, Galbinus swung his left arm in a wide arc, as if he were making to attack something or someone. There was no one there – and yet a moment later, reality seemed to shudder and crack in a concentrated space where he felt something impact against the swung cannon. The blue and red form of Highway ragdolled into multiple impacts along the ground as the young mech's speed literally ran ahead of his decision-making processes.

Yet the next moment, Galbinus pivoted on his foot, slamming his free leg onto Throughput's prone form as he readied the energy cannon mounted on his forearm. The air was already starting to shimmer and waver from the stress of the Constable-class baton blaster that had become his primary method of attempted law enforcement on this planet. A moment later, his arm recoiled backwards, his elbow bending backwards the absorb the impact as a condensed ball of energy tore across the battlefield, the air screeching as if horrified by the application of physics on display.

Galbinus was already striding forward, his foot driving Throughput's faceplate even deeper into the rubble as he stepped off. The distant building closer to the communications tower momentarily disappeared in a flash of light, followed by an explosion of dust and debris as Quarry's body unceremoniously somersaulted from his sniping position.

"Rangefinder!" he called out, a slight halo of energy still shimmering slightly around the barrel of his weapon. "Enough of this! Cease and desist immediately!"

"Not a fat chance, law-mech." Galbinus only had a moment to turn before the wall next to him erupted, pelting his own faceplate with debris impacts and forcing him to raise his arms up to guard.

Which left his legs open as an enormous green vehicle slammed into his knees, sending him tumbling over the vehicle and forcing him to Reconfigure into the armored combat vehicle Devin's engineers had provided. Rangefinder's large, bulky form appeared to be that of some sort of treaded self-propelled artillery cannon, its unwieldy gun attempting to swing around with its limited traverse. Galbinus's blaster, now the main weapon of the armored vehicle, fired a snap shot directly beneath Rangefinder's treads.

The impact sent Rangefinder spinning about, forcing him to Reconfigure as well and giving Galbinus time to do so in turn. "Wasn't expectin' you to find us so quickly," Tyrannous's Second grunted. Two massive metal manipulators slammed together knuckles-first, as the gun slid solidly over his left shoulder, a round already slotting inside the chamber. "Not that I'm gonna let ya stop us. Tyrannous's got plans."

"He always does," Galbinus growled. "I'll find out what they are, even if I have to beat them out of you!"

"Don't threaten a mech with a good time. Show me what ya got!"

"It would explain why the Free Brothers seemed so interested in that communications tower."

All of them were standing at the base of the communications tower that Rangefinder's crew had seemed so deadset on before just moments before. Much of the tower was forged from steel and layered in pylon-like structures criss-crossing each other – there were some gouges in the structure, but it was still standing strong enough to support the massive dish apparatus at the top.

"We would not even have known they were making such an attempt if you hadn't already been sharing your data with us," Galbinus mused. "And now a Mekaen vessel on approach? Here? Now?"

Off in the distance, the Free Brothers were engaged in a fighting retreat. Breaker's laughter cut through the distance, seemingly uncaring of all of the damage being leveled against him as he closed again and again to land just one more strike on whomever he could get hold of, before going for one more regardless. Tracker's voice snapped across the communications channels, with Nailhead loudly complaining all the way as Breakneck's form sped through the rubble, trying to find any human survivors to extract them to safety if he could.

"How would they know to come here?" Adrianna asked. "Does anyone know you're here?"

"Not specifically," Galbinus continued to process. "All Inspectors have a tracking beacon – mine has been broadcasting and attempting to reconnect with the wider Dominion for some time now, but any vessel would have had to manually search for some time unless they already knew Earth's location…" His optic narrowed at the still-image – he would have to get his other optic fixed, as cracked and flickering as it was – but for now he could ignore it. "And the Dominion hardly sends just one vessel. That won't hold more than five or so Kaus, unless they were looking to simply extract our processors…"

wait.

"…this is law enforcement." It finally dawned on him. "And that narrows down who that could be, at least a little bit…" His optic then looked up at the communications tower. "…Adrianna. Would it cause any difficulties if we were to make use of this?"

"Uh…I don't…think so?" The young Oracle Matrix seemed a little uncertain. "What are you using it for, Galbinus?"

"Easy, Adri,"
Delphi replied. "We're going to directly ask who is on there."

"…uh." Prow's optics blinked as the Defiant's terminals began to initiate an alert.

"'Uh?'" Quantum turned to stare at him dourly. "Please, a little more substance to your navigation reports, Prow?"

"We're getting…a communications request from the surface of Solaris-3."

"…what?"

"Yeah, that's what I'm saying. And it even has ident codes."

"What's going on?" Both Kaus turned around as best they could in the Defiant's cramped bridge space. Percivax was hunched over, his larger purple frame struggling to squeeze in as he looked at the both of them.

"We, ah-" It was clearly Quantum's turn to lack eloquence, Prow noted slightly smugly.

"-we're getting hailed from Solaris-3, sir," Prow finished.

"What!?" Prow immediately brought the alert notification to the main screen to head off any cries of 'that's impossible!' from his boss. "And that's-"

"Ident codes confirmed," Victoria said slowly, the incredulity in her voice evident. "And-"

Immediately, a circular image appeared, appearing somewhat incoherent as it materialized on screen. "-ot sure if I'm doing this right? Hotwire, are you sure-?"

"For the last time, Delphi, I'm sure!"
Prow's optics flashed in astonishment. There was no mistaking that voice for anything but Kaus. "They're definitely receiving, and if they haven't already said anything they're all slack-jawed and looking like crocillators or whatever those weird lizard swamp things are!"

"Um, if you say so-?"

"
Unidentified Oracle Matrix, this is Victoria of the MDS Defiant. Identify yourself." Victoria had found her runtime processes again, and was desperately trying to regain some semblance of normality.

"Oh-? Oh, hello, miss Victoria!" Whatever response any of them were expecting, Prow was sure this wasn't it. "My name is Delphi, and I'm the acting Oracle Matrix for Legio-Galbinus! It's so lovely to meet you all!"

Behind him, Prow could sense Percivax placing a hand onto his forehead. They weren't even in orbit yet, and he was already certain this was going to be a long assignment...

Dr. Sam Carlson

- Empathic Booster and Transmutation (w/Max, +1d6): 4, 4, 3, 3

Success...with complications. New Branching Options Unlocked

"Sam here."

"Ahem."

"And Max. Sam and Max here. As discussed earlier in the month, we butted heads together, took some aspirin with our caffeination of choice after the collision, and compared notes after flinging coffee cups and ideas at each other. Just to recap: the Empathic Booster is powerful, but it has an incredibly short range and an equally short shelf life when it comes to Transmutation which also has an equally short lifespan. We've learned two things.

"One: intense emotions
do count as a stabilizing bridge element for psychic energies such as Transmutation, and the Empathic Booster acts as a jump start option to get the ball rolling. The MMI can only carry so much on its own - it's like thinking really, really hard about wanting to to skip past the lunch line, but at the end of the day you're going to damned well stay in place no matter what imagine spot you have rolling around in your head and you're not going to Transmutate a hole in the ground.

"The Empathic Booster, however,
can create a psychic 'shortwave' that bridges the distance. Both literal and metaphorical. Now, just like with the MMI, we're dealing with broad limitations. You can't make the Arc Blade into a jetpack no matter how awesome that sounds just with EB and TM (I just made an acronym for each, bite me). It's going to be a sword no matter what you do with it - it can become tougher, it can be cuttier, but it's still a sword. But we can make it more conductive and handle a greater volume of power to interface with the Spark Caliber for a fraction of a second. Not great results, but they're repeatable results.

"Two: we
might need to create some sort of guard rail. Unfocused but intense emotions can get really, really destructive. Max?"

"Intense, focused emotions specifically. Something you really think about. Bouts of irritation, anxiety, giddiness about asking the intern out on a date - God only knows where you're taking each other out to in this backwater - serve as the fuel for the shortwave. And we're learning that just like with different calibers of weapons, certain emotions have a...sort of spread to them. Extreme focus is the end result - but it's how you get there that influences the 'accuracy' so to speak. If you're not careful, what you're supercharging is going to run amok.

"...on that note, we still have budget leftover for another lab, right?"

- Experimentation - Olympic-class Leg Sample (Potential Upscaling of Super Robot construction): 6, 2, 6

Critical success! New Engineering Option Unlocked!

"In other more practical news, I can't believe I'm about to say this: Sheol's designs, if they are his, found a way to actually efficiently redistribute heavy mass. Let me explain:

"We already know that K-Class Materials lets us sidestep a
lot of those pesky limitations of our understanding of standard physics. There's no good reason why K-Scale works as well as it does aside from the fact that that's what Sample Zero was designed to do, but can't serve as an offensive weapon aside from maybe blunt force trauma (there's an idea for you). Likewise for all of the others that we're putting together. But making something the full size of the Olympic-class, or even Mercury V, just doesn't work with what we have. The math literally doesn't add up, even with the shortcuts K-Class offers.

"The Olympic-class sample? This is a game changer, going to be upfront with you here. This is the very first
fundamental building block of a Kaiju we've managed to acquire and preserve. Not just the leg, but the muscle tissue, the blood vessels, the bone structure. We have enough of the leg to plug into simulations on how it's supposed to work, and for whatever's missing we have enough data and guestimates that we can fill in the blanks. The Scale, the Horn, the Wings - those are all external to what makes a Kaiju what it is, and aside from understanding the acidic properties of the bloodwork, those can effectively be mixed and matched like equipment in a roleplaying game. Even with the K-Lung, we were only able to analyze the elemental aspects of the organ and not how it feeds into the rest of the body.

"But the leg shows us what we've been missing. The bone doesn't work the same way as a regular organic being. We are seeing a
lot of influences from mechanical engineering, where each bone structure interlocks with each other like pistons or connected gears. This only works because the muscle tissue is woven in to work as compressors or springs, and even that only works because there's a lot of blood vessels tied into those specific muscle groups. We think there's some sort of rejuvnating cocktail that helps to keep the muscles from bleeding or being torn apart from the physical trauma of moving something so large, but it's just as likely that Sheol only needs the kaiju to last long enough to do its job.

"We might not have to cheat the same way that Aeon Particles do for Mercury V or with us and Anti-Gravity; the design is mechanically sound. We can pass on our notes to the Engineering team at this point, but it will be up to them to figure out how to translate this from the biological to the mechanical. In the meantime, we can keep on experimentation as an option.

"And I should be happy about this discovery, but I'm just annoyed
that hack got to it first."

SCAI-01 Ivanna
- Experimentation - K-Lung 'Supercharge' Fuel, Combine with with Arc Weapons: 3, 5, 5

Success!

"We have explored the application of the K-Lung Fuel with the Arc line of weaponry, and I think it has some potential!

"K-Lung serves as a finite resource for the duration of a mission. Think of it as a gas bag that depletes its volume of air, only this air can either project chemicals that reacts with the open air, or it can 'coat' the surface of a weapon or piece of equipment with chemicals that then reacts to the air itself. The best example that we have is Perseus Megas - the cylindrical cartridges all link into the firing mechanism which blasts a coat of elemental properties onto the pilebunker, but it only triggers when it either is exposed to the open air or embeds itself into the target.

"Likewise, we believe that the Arc line of weaponry can benefit from this as well. Coating the Arc Blade to become much more conductive - or even combining it with another compatible element, such as fire - is not too much of an ask from our department's standpoint. The Arc Cannon is slightly trickier, but it
is at the end of a day, a railgun that relies on physical projectiles as a medium. For what we are trying to do, I would only recommend this be applied to the Finishing Strikes, but this is very possible!

"I think it's safe to hand this over to the Engineering department at this point
, but by applying temporary 'coats' of K-Lung through attached dispensers, we can temporarily strengthen aspects of both the Blade and Cannon."

- Effects of Pterawing-class Wing Sample on Seeker Core: 6, 3, 2

Success! New additional option for Seeker Core unlocked next turn.

"The engineers also assure me that there's time to possibly sneak something in if we want to go for it. This is fortunate, because we think they might be able to spin microfiber fabrics from the Pterawing sample!

"One caveat that Lana wishes for me to convey - this would primarily apply to the
wings. What she anticipates that this might be able to do is that in between the flaps of the wings, we can replace certain parts of the purely mechanical innards that conventional aerodynamic engineering considers standard. Given that the wings are also an intrinsic part of both the aircraft and the robot modes, we think that this has a few applications. Additional lift, the ability to cut engines momentarily to allow for gliding, and slightly more maneuverability.

"...I'm not sure we want to call it the K-Wing or whatnot, but overall it
should offer additional lift and maneuverability if the math is correct..."

Zulu
- Experimentation: Enhance Dispersion Charges with K-Scale: 4, 4, 4

Success With Complications.

"Metamaterial, designation 'K-Scale,' possesses many unique properties. Full potential not yet realized. As per Dr. Carlson, unique properties of cloned samples of slain biomechanical organisms known as 'Kaiju' able to defy standard laws of physics in ways unknown to both Sol and Mekaen schools of thought.

"Sought to capitalize by application of Dispersion Field. Sought to use K-Scale as most logical extension. K-Scale well established for protective purposes, in line with intent behind Dispersion Fields. Laced Dispersion Field charges around sample K-Scale, and initiated multiple small scale tests wtih assistance from Engineering team volunteers.

"Results are not promising. Dispersion Field saturation achieved for two seconds as per DFRI design documents suggest. Hypothesis was that due to protective purposes, K-Scale samples would retain Dispersion Field energy. However, K-Scale does not seem to recognize this theoretical compatibility. K-Scale did not retain Dispersion Field properties after expiration of Dispersion Field charge even after multiple tests.

"Conclusion: K-Scale capable of projecting Dispersion Field charge, but for extremely limited lifespans."

- Experimentation: Enhance Dispersion Charges with Faedeum: 1, 6, 6

Critical Success!

"Metamaterial, designation 'Faedium Crystalline Structures.' Incredibly versatile. Faedium capable of generating Dispersion Field at acceptable levels.

"Faedium 'Block' crystals able to retain finite levels of Dispersion Field charges. Blocks accepts energy medium as readily as conventional power generation. Requires external stimuli to generate Dispersion Field, but easily remedied if built as part of a larger mechanism. Caveat: Dispersion Field energy much more intensive than conventional power. Current calculative estimates are projected at 3.2:1 in terms of Faedium capacity to retain Dispersion Field. Incredible achievement regardless. Is reliable at retaining energy.

"Caution: Faedium vessel utilized for this purpose cannot also serve as conventional power source."

Dr. Mary McCullough
- Faedium C-Crystal (w/Max): 1, 3, 2, 1

Failure.

"It seems that the C-Crystals retain their own unique microstructures that do not play nicely with Faedium crystals. The main issue we are currently encountering is that the C-Crystal is not just a crystalline structure. As Max has much more knowledge of the C-Crystal, I will allow her to take over the explanation."

"The C-Crystal is effectively a computer cut in crystal form. We know this, especially from what nonsense we've run into with our crystal guest. But it's not a computer system in the same way you or I would understand. It's not multipurpose, because it can't be multipurpose. Every single partof the C-Crystal is dedicated to the end goal - imbuing a champion of light, kitten cuddles and infinite chocolate - and nothing else. But there's what are almost like circuitry in the C-Crystal that we are years away from understanding, if ever."

"Whereas the Faedium crystals are multipurpose. We don't have the capability to cut circuitry or grooves that finely detailed into them. The most we have managed to achieve are size and purpose, and I can't explain enough in one sitting just how long it took for me to actually get that part right before Max pulled me out of sending the Science Board rudely shaped crystals of thei-"

"Anyways. We can always try daisy-chaining systems together, but a C-Crystal made out of Faedium isn't in the cards unfortunately."

- Faedium Crystalline Structures - Spark Caliber: 1, 4, 6

Success! Engineering Options Unlocked.

"...we have also found that there is a limit to how small we can make the Faedium. The Spark Caliber can be retrofitted to make use of it, but we aren't quite seeing the dramatic 1:1 effect in power that we were expecting. Honestly, I'm still not sure how the Spark Caliber works, but Lana and Wilde lost me five minutes into the explanation. Went much better after I skipped them to what it's supposed to do.

"
So I did some testing. And it turns out that you can cut a Faedium crystal to the size of the Spark Caliber's, and it will work just as a plug and play Faedium Block would otherwise. The advantage is that it's much more portable - and in theory it should carry much higher levels of power than your standard electric bank. However, we're not seeing the 1:1 levels of increase that the math says it should. There might be something about the weapons that I'm not quite understanding.

"It's going to be up to Engineering to see how they can make use of the output. But so far, the motivation to 'make bigger boom' seems to be the most universal and effective towards that end."

March, Year Four - Special Projects Results
AI-01 'Katarina'

Westphalian Waystation Wardens Wreckage: 5, 1, 2

Success! Some information of the wreckage is discerned.

"So I'm not entirely sure how else to break this news...if I want to be technical about it for the official records, this is some kind of...displacement technology? In practice, it looks for all intents and purposes like there is some kind of teleportation system in place. Unfortunately, a lot of the salvage is broken, but we have some educated guesses on how it works..."

"Huh. Would you look at that. I almost did my thesis on matter displacement and reallocation, did you know? Life could've been a whole lot different for me if I went that way."

Such was Sam Carlson's outside observations, given he was busy elsewhere this month, but Katarina's analysis tells a rather sobering story. There is the caveat that the information is incomplete, due to how thoroughly wrecked most of it was, but based on recordings from Ichiro's optics and Ocular's observations, there is the strong possibility that the Westphalians developed a working, honest-to-your-form-of-worship teleportation device. The Westphalians have always had a headstart on engineering for years. The Tank-Mobiles, the Walkers, and the latest forms of reverse-engineering being observed on the field nowadays are ongoing proof that if nothing else, the Westphalians are able to adapt very quickly.

Teleportation - or 'matter displacement and reallocation,' as Sam says is the current academic term - was a theory that was floating around for a decade. Katarina was able to pull the case study papers across the Union's academic databases, and it mostly matches what the Science department is telling you - it was far more of a thought experiment and philosophical argument rather than experimentation (mostly because no one was entirely sure where to start or how to go about it).

That's not to say no one ever tried, but they seemingly ended in failure. One such effort attempted in A.D. 2052 required as much power as a small city to attempt to transport an apple. The experiment concluded that the half-charred result that moved ten meters did not ultimately result in an actual teleportation - and even then, plenty of observers contended that there was an actual impact zone from the apple being flung by the energies. Another experiment, which required a similar level of power and a large radius of space, saw the object disappear entirely, and that was concluded to be a result of disintegration rather than actual teleportation.

Katarina's studies of the wreckage show that some aspects of the Westphalian teleportation device have some consistencies with the past failed experiments. It drew a significant amount of power and occupied a significant amount of space and infrastructure inside of the oil platform. Ocular's own observations when he stowed away in the Westphalian submarine noted that the energy fields around the vessel spiked, but he was in no position to do a proper analysis given he was hiding or give any more detailed readings than that. So for now, the how of the teleportation method remains a mystery.

What is not is that it works. And given that the Westphalians' logistics network has been evading the authorities for this long, it's safe to say that they have been refining this technology for years.

Drone Captives: 4, 4, 6

Success!

"In other news, Zulu and I were able to talk to the Drones! There is still a lot of, for lack of a better term, 'culture shock' going on right now, so there's not a whole lot of information they're sharing that we haven't already learned from Zulu yet. But they seem receptive to working with us!"

In addition, it seems that Katarina's methods for turning the Drones around was simple:

Bombard them with kindness.

Much like with Zulu, the Drones have absolutely no idea what to make of this. It is clear that both sides of the Mekaen conflicts do not see the Drones in much of a positive light - they are a mix of shocktroops and cannon fodder, they are menial workers, they are technicians, they are frankly viewed as disposable. And their life expectancy is typically measured no further than a year at absolute most (the Free Brothers' management style does not do this life expectancy any favors).

But Katarina has gone out of her way to talk to each individual one. Asking them questions about themselves, what they do, what they want to do, and what is on their minds. At first, this did not make much headway - Free Brother Drones tend to all be flash cloned and assembled, almost seemingly shy of a hive mind (or cloud consciousness). But after Katarina's stubborn efforts, and showcasing how Zulu had been treated, more and more of the Drones are beginning to open up and entertain the once unthinkable idea of individualizing themselves.

Above all, much like with Zulu, they were made the offer of asylum with the Research Institute, including a written guarantee (signed by yourself and undersigned by Brigadier Peters) that they will not be subject to random acts of termination and being rendered offline, for reasons including:
  • Target practice
  • Unsatisfactory work performance
  • Random fits of rage
  • 'Because the boss felt like it'
  • Voicing opinions
Creating a miniature bill of rights for alien robot drones was not on your bingo card today. But while they are not as independent as Zulu was (not everyone was 'lucky' to work on Bandit's kit and survive), it appears they will be able to assist operations in a limited capacity so long as you feed, quarter and in general take care of them.

DFRI Drones have been recruited! Can be assigned as one free reroll to a failed roll (must be assigned during planning phase).

AI-02 'Melinda'

Experimentation: Aegis Shield: 5, 4, 1

-- Combine K Scale Shield, Dispersion Zone, Emphatic Booster, Faedeum, & Zirvitum to Create a Powerful Shield for use by Beuwolf Fenrir.

Success! One Turn Remaining. Previous success with Faedium/Dispersion in Science Phase will provide +1 to highest roll next turn.

"Honestly? Boss? I'm really shocked this wasn't tried before. Was this too much of an obvious gimme thing or something?

"Well, regardless, the shield was the simplest most straightforward thing! K-Scale took to the shield no problem like we expected, buuuuut we're just now trying to make every other system play nice with the other. Not so sure about the Empathic Booster - do we have any idea how that's gonna work with Dispersion? Either way, I'll need another month before I can really call this good."

Melinda is still flabbergasted that this wasn't tried before. It was always on Engineering's mind, but they have run into the ultimate problem of 'too much to do, not quite enough hands for them.' She does appreciate the straightforwardness of the project though, and after consulting with Lana a few times, she has put her best foot forward with it.

The K-Scale naturally fits the mold of a shield without any issue, easily taking on the shape of a tower shield. Strong, durable and easy to produce. However, Melinda has taken pains to hollow out parts of the shield without sacrificing too much of that durability, as she tries to insert as many systems components as possible and make sure they play nicely with each other in order to maximize the protection this will offer to Beowulf's Fenrir mode.

Zirvitium coating in critical breakpoints was a given, enough to deflect severe attacks away from the softer parts of the shield - and preferably away from Fenrir entirely. Faedium in turn is slotted directly into the center of the shield, both for a stylistic statement but also so that the Dispersion Zone sprays can gain maximum coverage and slow down incoming attacks enough for the Zirvitium to take the punishment.

The only issue she's been having so far? The Empathic Booster. Plenty of others across the DFRI have been experimenting more with it lately, and Melinda is doing her best to make sure that the Empathic Booster doesn't accidentally go at cross purposes with the Aegis's intent. The shield itself works fine - she wants to take that extra month to make sure nothing snaps during stress tests.

One Month remaining.

Experimentation: K-Fang Weapons Templates: 4, 5, 5

Success!

"We decided to try out everything we could with K-Fang beyond just the classics, and we learned what weapons it wants to conform to and what it really really doesn't. Bladed and piercing weapons are A-Okay, but bludgeoning actually doesn't really take. I've got a list set up, but I'm really proud of the boomerang concept!

"...the only problem is catching it without cutting into your hands. Ooof."

Melinda's efforts to create additional templates for the K-Fang, on the other hand, have resulted in stumbling upwards. She had meant to create a sort of dagger or similarly short-length blade as a backup weapon, having noted that plenty of combat with the Super Robots ultimately comes down to close combat and having a backup weapon before resorting to throwing fists would be a good place to start.

What she ended up with instead was a blade that unfolds into a boomerang.

Entirely accidental too.

The Boomerang slots into hardpoints on the Super Robot chassis itself, serving initially as an ornamental piece. However, once it comes into play, it loosens from its hardpoint, and the Super Robot (primarily Core units, as she hasn't upscaled to the Combined just yet) is free to grab at it and throw it at the enemy.

Melinda had meant for it to return to their hands like a traditional boomerang, but for the problem that it was still quite sharp, and inputing laser guidance return systems was more effort than it was worth. So instead, she resolved to make the Boomerang's more brittle, and shatter on impact against their targets and pepper them with K-Class shrapnel rather than risk a return cut.

It wasn't quite what you were asking for, but they are cheap enough that they can be fitted onto any Core Unit without any extra effort by the Engineers.

K-Boomerangs created! Can come equipped as default on Core Units.

Can be refined in follow up Engineering actions.

March, Year Four - Rapid Response (Westphalians)
"This doesn't answer the question as to why they're here though."

"I don't know, and quite frankly it's not my job to care right now." The red-haired officer looked absolutely frazzled, his First Response Corps uniform covered in dirt and soot. One hand tore at his hair as he glared back at Jessica. "Look, we appreciate the help, we really do, but can we please worry about dealing with the fact there's a Separatist force about to attack first?"

"Sorry, sir," Jessica apologized, a sheepish grin crossing her face as she rubbed the back of her head. "It's just we've been dealing with the Separatists all over the place, and it's weird that they're in the middle of the North American District is all." She schooled her face as she looked back at the holo display. "We can take them, but we can't focus on getting people out at the same time as fighting the Westphalians."

"So long as you can keep them distracted, you won't have to," the officer assured her. "This is our listening post, we just need time to sanitize and wipe systems. The actual evacuation won't take so time...wouldn't mind if we had ourselves more of the Jackals to do it, but we make do with what we have." He adjusted the holo display so that it zoomed in to a smaller, localized version of the map. "If you could head them off here..."

"...and that about sums it up." Jessica looked up from the display. She was standing in the Pegasus's hangar, where rows upon rows of vehicles from the Third Reconnaissance were being offloaded, and given final inspections before being allowed to roll down the ramp. "There's a Westphalian force out there that really shouldn't be this deep in the District-" Shouldn't be this close to the west coast, honestly, "-and we think they're trying to knock out this First Response Corps monitoring station."

"Ma'am, do we know what we're up against?" The voice was new to Jessica - it was almost entirely digital, but it also sounded young. One of the Golems from the First Wing was loitering outside, but his presence was streamed onto the holo display for the briefing. Much like Zulu and the other Drones, his face was represented by a blank visor and obscuring face plate.

"Not yet. Just hold back until we draw some in, and then we'll signal you to come in." Despite the lack of visible expressions on his face, Jessica could have sworn she could feel silent relief radiating off of the Golem leader. "The Jackals I want hidden until we get visual of whoever's part of this raid. Ichiro, you and I are going to draw their attention..."

"When you said we were going to draw their attention, I didn't think you meant it like this!"

Jessica could only laugh as she manically held tight to one of the rungs on Ichiro's turret. The Westphalians had come in alright - and apparently they had reacted immediately to Ichiro's presence. "Are they anyone you know!?" she called out as a trio of the Tank-Mobile units were chasing after them. Impressively they were keeping pace, but Ichiro wasn't gunning it as fast as he could.

"Unless any of them were in France, probably not-hang on!" The Centurion frame skidded to a halt as another trio of mecha headed them off. Jessica frowned - she didn't recognize these ones. Blocky, squat designs with a flat screen-like 'face' and a single eye lens focusing on them, all skidding to a halt as wheels embedded in their feet hit their brakes. "These are new," Ichiro commented.

It might not have been the FRC officer's job to care at the moment. Jessica wanted to know what the hell these were, and why they were able to emerge so deeply into the District. But for now... "Think we can take them?" she asked idly.

"Unless they brought a superheavy, we probably don't even need the Buster Pack."

Jessica grinned, and tapped at the glowing C-Crystal hanging from her neck. "Let Third Reconnaissance know to jump in." The distant boom of thunder echoed from a distance as hardlight began to form around her.

"Thunderbolt! Come Here!"

Rapid Response - Westphalians

Rapid Response elements have engaged in Westphalian probe units deep in North American District. Results will post at the beginning of next turn.

Still a bit frazzled right now, but I wanted to get something out. As far as the Rapid Response snippets go, I likely won't write out the ENTIRE sequence out, but you'll get snapshots like this moving forward.
