Dr. Sam Carlson

- Empathic Booster and Transmutation (w/Max, +1d6): 4, 4, 3, 3

Success...with complications. New Branching Options Unlocked

"Sam here."

"Ahem."

"And Max. Sam and Max here. As discussed earlier in the month, we butted heads together, took some aspirin with our caffeination of choice after the collision, and compared notes after flinging coffee cups and ideas at each other. Just to recap: the Empathic Booster is powerful, but it has an incredibly short range and an equally short shelf life when it comes to Transmutation which also has an equally short lifespan. We've learned two things.

"One: intense emotions
do count as a stabilizing bridge element for psychic energies such as Transmutation, and the Empathic Booster acts as a jump start option to get the ball rolling. The MMI can only carry so much on its own - it's like thinking really, really hard about wanting to to skip past the lunch line, but at the end of the day you're going to damned well stay in place no matter what imagine spot you have rolling around in your head and you're not going to Transmutate a hole in the ground.

"The Empathic Booster, however,
can create a psychic 'shortwave' that bridges the distance. Both literal and metaphorical. Now, just like with the MMI, we're dealing with broad limitations. You can't make the Arc Blade into a jetpack no matter how awesome that sounds just with EB and TM (I just made an acronym for each, bite me). It's going to be a sword no matter what you do with it - it can become tougher, it can be cuttier, but it's still a sword. But we can make it more conductive and handle a greater volume of power to interface with the Spark Caliber for a fraction of a second. Not great results, but they're repeatable results.

"Two: we
might need to create some sort of guard rail. Unfocused but intense emotions can get really, really destructive. Max?"

"Intense, focused emotions specifically. Something you really think about. Bouts of irritation, anxiety, giddiness about asking the intern out on a date - God only knows where you're taking each other out to in this backwater - serve as the fuel for the shortwave. And we're learning that just like with different calibers of weapons, certain emotions have a...sort of spread to them. Extreme focus is the end result - but it's how you get there that influences the 'accuracy' so to speak. If you're not careful, what you're supercharging is going to run amok.

"...on that note, we still have budget leftover for another lab, right?"

- Experimentation - Olympic-class Leg Sample (Potential Upscaling of Super Robot construction): 6, 2, 6

Critical success! New Engineering Option Unlocked!

"In other more practical news, I can't believe I'm about to say this: Sheol's designs, if they are his, found a way to actually efficiently redistribute heavy mass. Let me explain:

"We already know that K-Class Materials lets us sidestep a
lot of those pesky limitations of our understanding of standard physics. There's no good reason why K-Scale works as well as it does aside from the fact that that's what Sample Zero was designed to do, but can't serve as an offensive weapon aside from maybe blunt force trauma (there's an idea for you). Likewise for all of the others that we're putting together. But making something the full size of the Olympic-class, or even Mercury V, just doesn't work with what we have. The math literally doesn't add up, even with the shortcuts K-Class offers.

"The Olympic-class sample? This is a game changer, going to be upfront with you here. This is the very first
fundamental building block of a Kaiju we've managed to acquire and preserve. Not just the leg, but the muscle tissue, the blood vessels, the bone structure. We have enough of the leg to plug into simulations on how it's supposed to work, and for whatever's missing we have enough data and guestimates that we can fill in the blanks. The Scale, the Horn, the Wings - those are all external to what makes a Kaiju what it is, and aside from understanding the acidic properties of the bloodwork, those can effectively be mixed and matched like equipment in a roleplaying game. Even with the K-Lung, we were only able to analyze the elemental aspects of the organ and not how it feeds into the rest of the body.

"But the leg shows us what we've been missing. The bone doesn't work the same way as a regular organic being. We are seeing a
lot of influences from mechanical engineering, where each bone structure interlocks with each other like pistons or connected gears. This only works because the muscle tissue is woven in to work as compressors or springs, and even that only works because there's a lot of blood vessels tied into those specific muscle groups. We think there's some sort of rejuvnating cocktail that helps to keep the muscles from bleeding or being torn apart from the physical trauma of moving something so large, but it's just as likely that Sheol only needs the kaiju to last long enough to do its job.

"We might not have to cheat the same way that Aeon Particles do for Mercury V or with us and Anti-Gravity; the design is mechanically sound. We can pass on our notes to the Engineering team at this point, but it will be up to them to figure out how to translate this from the biological to the mechanical. In the meantime, we can keep on experimentation as an option.

"And I should be happy about this discovery, but I'm just annoyed
that hack got to it first."

SCAI-01 Ivanna
- Experimentation - K-Lung 'Supercharge' Fuel, Combine with with Arc Weapons: 3, 5, 5

Success!

"We have explored the application of the K-Lung Fuel with the Arc line of weaponry, and I think it has some potential!

"K-Lung serves as a finite resource for the duration of a mission. Think of it as a gas bag that depletes its volume of air, only this air can either project chemicals that reacts with the open air, or it can 'coat' the surface of a weapon or piece of equipment with chemicals that then reacts to the air itself. The best example that we have is Perseus Megas - the cylindrical cartridges all link into the firing mechanism which blasts a coat of elemental properties onto the pilebunker, but it only triggers when it either is exposed to the open air or embeds itself into the target.

"Likewise, we believe that the Arc line of weaponry can benefit from this as well. Coating the Arc Blade to become much more conductive - or even combining it with another compatible element, such as fire - is not too much of an ask from our department's standpoint. The Arc Cannon is slightly trickier, but it
is at the end of a day, a railgun that relies on physical projectiles as a medium. For what we are trying to do, I would only recommend this be applied to the Finishing Strikes, but this is very possible!

"I think it's safe to hand this over to the Engineering department at this point
, but by applying temporary 'coats' of K-Lung through attached dispensers, we can temporarily strengthen aspects of both the Blade and Cannon."

- Effects of Pterawing-class Wing Sample on Seeker Core: 6, 3, 2

Success! New additional option for Seeker Core unlocked next turn.

"The engineers also assure me that there's time to possibly sneak something in if we want to go for it. This is fortunate, because we think they might be able to spin microfiber fabrics from the Pterawing sample!

"One caveat that Lana wishes for me to convey - this would primarily apply to the
wings. What she anticipates that this might be able to do is that in between the flaps of the wings, we can replace certain parts of the purely mechanical innards that conventional aerodynamic engineering considers standard. Given that the wings are also an intrinsic part of both the aircraft and the robot modes, we think that this has a few applications. Additional lift, the ability to cut engines momentarily to allow for gliding, and slightly more maneuverability.

"...I'm not sure we want to call it the K-Wing or whatnot, but overall it
should offer additional lift and maneuverability if the math is correct..."

Zulu
- Experimentation: Enhance Dispersion Charges with K-Scale: 4, 4, 4

Success With Complications.

"Metamaterial, designation 'K-Scale,' possesses many unique properties. Full potential not yet realized. As per Dr. Carlson, unique properties of cloned samples of slain biomechanical organisms known as 'Kaiju' able to defy standard laws of physics in ways unknown to both Sol and Mekaen schools of thought.

"Sought to capitalize by application of Dispersion Field. Sought to use K-Scale as most logical extension. K-Scale well established for protective purposes, in line with intent behind Dispersion Fields. Laced Dispersion Field charges around sample K-Scale, and initiated multiple small scale tests wtih assistance from Engineering team volunteers.

"Results are not promising. Dispersion Field saturation achieved for two seconds as per DFRI design documents suggest. Hypothesis was that due to protective purposes, K-Scale samples would retain Dispersion Field energy. However, K-Scale does not seem to recognize this theoretical compatibility. K-Scale did not retain Dispersion Field properties after expiration of Dispersion Field charge even after multiple tests.

"Conclusion: K-Scale capable of projecting Dispersion Field charge, but for extremely limited lifespans."

- Experimentation: Enhance Dispersion Charges with Faedeum: 1, 6, 6

Critical Success!

"Metamaterial, designation 'Faedium Crystalline Structures.' Incredibly versatile. Faedium capable of generating Dispersion Field at acceptable levels.

"Faedium 'Block' crystals able to retain finite levels of Dispersion Field charges. Blocks accepts energy medium as readily as conventional power generation. Requires external stimuli to generate Dispersion Field, but easily remedied if built as part of a larger mechanism. Caveat: Dispersion Field energy much more intensive than conventional power. Current calculative estimates are projected at 3.2:1 in terms of Faedium capacity to retain Dispersion Field. Incredible achievement regardless. Is reliable at retaining energy.

"Caution: Faedium vessel utilized for this purpose cannot also serve as conventional power source."

Dr. Mary McCullough
- Faedium C-Crystal (w/Max): 1, 3, 2, 1

Failure.

"It seems that the C-Crystals retain their own unique microstructures that do not play nicely with Faedium crystals. The main issue we are currently encountering is that the C-Crystal is not just a crystalline structure. As Max has much more knowledge of the C-Crystal, I will allow her to take over the explanation."

"The C-Crystal is effectively a computer cut in crystal form. We know this, especially from what nonsense we've run into with our crystal guest. But it's not a computer system in the same way you or I would understand. It's not multipurpose, because it can't be multipurpose. Every single partof the C-Crystal is dedicated to the end goal - imbuing a champion of light, kitten cuddles and infinite chocolate - and nothing else. But there's what are almost like circuitry in the C-Crystal that we are years away from understanding, if ever."

"Whereas the Faedium crystals are multipurpose. We don't have the capability to cut circuitry or grooves that finely detailed into them. The most we have managed to achieve are size and purpose, and I can't explain enough in one sitting just how long it took for me to actually get that part right before Max pulled me out of sending the Science Board rudely shaped crystals of thei-"

"Anyways. We can always try daisy-chaining systems together, but a C-Crystal made out of Faedium isn't in the cards unfortunately."

- Faedium Crystalline Structures - Spark Caliber: 1, 4, 6

Success! Engineering Options Unlocked.

"...we have also found that there is a limit to how small we can make the Faedium. The Spark Caliber can be retrofitted to make use of it, but we aren't quite seeing the dramatic 1:1 effect in power that we were expecting. Honestly, I'm still not sure how the Spark Caliber works, but Lana and Wilde lost me five minutes into the explanation. Went much better after I skipped them to what it's supposed to do.

"
So I did some testing. And it turns out that you can cut a Faedium crystal to the size of the Spark Caliber's, and it will work just as a plug and play Faedium Block would otherwise. The advantage is that it's much more portable - and in theory it should carry much higher levels of power than your standard electric bank. However, we're not seeing the 1:1 levels of increase that the math says it should. There might be something about the weapons that I'm not quite understanding.

"It's going to be up to Engineering to see how they can make use of the output. But so far, the motivation to 'make bigger boom' seems to be the most universal and effective towards that end."

Well, that's another piece submitted to the GM @Basarin for review. Also, something I found that could be an upgrade to the Steed personal armor or an intermediate step between Steed and Jackal, unlike the command unit which is best when not engaged.

The road to making a Mecha Godzilla/Green Dragonzord/Dynazaemon had been unlocked.

I can't wait to see what mad insanity can be cooked up now that we greased our way past the square cube law some more. :D

Special projects rolls coming up shortly! Been dealing with a lot of unscheduled events and after hours requests for help at work, so I haven't had as much mental bandwidth for this earlier.

Caught it, looking it over!

Very nice update. Lots of fun little pieces to play with, and the super robot energy only gets stronger

Feels a lot like you're queuing up future midseason upgrades doesn't it?

March, Year Four - Special Projects Results
AI-01 'Katarina'
- Westphalian Waystation Wardens Wreckage
- Drone Captives

AI-02 'Melinda'
- Experimentation: Aegis Shield
-- Combine K Scale Shield, Dispersion Zone, Emphatic Booster, Faedeum, & Zirvitum to Create a Powerful Shield for use by Beuwolf Fenrir.
- Experimentation - K-Fang
-- Templating to Increase production & Power of K-Fang based weaponry

AI-01 'Katarina'

Westphalian Waystation Wardens Wreckage: 5, 1, 2

Success! Some information of the wreckage is discerned.

"So I'm not entirely sure how else to break this news...if I want to be technical about it for the official records, this is some kind of...displacement technology? In practice, it looks for all intents and purposes like there is some kind of teleportation system in place. Unfortunately, a lot of the salvage is broken, but we have some educated guesses on how it works..."

Drone Captives: 4, 4, 6

Success!

"In other news, Zulu and I were able to talk to the Drones! There is still a lot of, for lack of a better term, 'culture shock' going on right now, so there's not a whole lot of information they're sharing that we haven't already learned from Zulu yet. But they seem receptive to working with us!"

AI-02 'Melinda'

Experimentation: Aegis Shield:
5, 4, 1

Success! One Turn Remaining. Previous success with Faedium/Dispersion in Science Phase will provide +1 to highest roll next turn.

"Honestly? Boss? I'm really shocked this wasn't tried before. Was this too much of an obvious gimme thing or something?

"Well, regardless, the shield was the simplest most straightforward thing! K-Scale took to the shield no problem like we expected, buuuuut we're just now trying to make every other system play nice with the other. Not so sure about the Empathic Booster - do we have any idea how that's gonna work with Dispersion? Either way, I'll need another month before I can really call this good."

Experimentation: K-Fang Weapons Templates: 4, 5, 5

Success!

"We decided to try out everything we could with K-Fang beyond just the classics, and we learned what weapons it wants to conform to and what it really really doesn't. Bladed and piercing weapons are A-Okay, but bludgeoning actually doesn't really take. I've got a list set up, but I'm really proud of the boomerang concept!

"...the only problem is catching it without cutting into your hands. Ooof."

... So does a hunting K-Fang boomerang actually work or not? Because we've got proof the boomerang idea does work, yet if I haven't gotten confused somewhere Hunting Boomerangs are definitely bludgeoning weapons. Not much is happy with a good few kilos hitting limbs, necks or the dead at a good solid velocity, particularly where there's a curve to said velocity making it so the shock is twisting around rather than going straight through the impacted body part.

On the other, mutant, hand, well... It's not like swapped the damage from bludgeoning to bladed is going to impact much except the clean up involved and even a lot of that can (and should if we use it against Kaiju like we should be) be avoided by making the boomerang a thermal edged weapon. So the K-Fang should have no issues with it...?

Ah,thats too bad. We wont find any. They all joined the Westphalian Separatist Movement . I think they got postions as moral, political and logistical advisors? Oh well, maybe we can recruit some otters..

Yesssss. We will need them to pilot the aquarobo force to follow the kaiju back to sheol! It all makes sense now! We just need to:
-Find otters
-train them to pilot super robots
-built super robots for otters
-and make very cute costumes

Its perfect!
(Trackers?Never heard of them!)

We throw on some magnets to get it to return and latch on to an arm or something. That's the answer.
We technically already can do stuff like that. Remember Rick calling the Arc Blade back to his hand during the fight with the Dragon kaiju, after it got knocked into the water?

Then again, that part was written six years ago...

"Energy Blast recharging," he muttered, "Heat tolerances on the arms need time to cool, Arc Blade is-that's it!" Punching in a few commands onto the console, he held his right arm forward and opened his palm expectantly. "Arc Blade! Magnetic charge!"

For a moment nothing happened, and the only sounds were the burning buildings behind him and the shrieking of the Dragon(fly) as it descended towards him. Yet before Richard could berate himself for just looking really dumb, a great splash between him and the kaiju erupted. As if the Lady of the Lake herself were throwing it at him (probably out of annoyance), the Arc Blade came sailing straight to his palm, hilt-first.

It might be easiest to turn the boomerang into a giant psychic guided funnel to make it reusable and behave like an anime once we perfect the science honestly.

One of those otters must have a dark site, to serve as the foil for the red otter Mecha
