A magic research buddy like Papa Smurf be the only 'min-maxing' I would've been interested in anyway. My next choice be the Debate Team Smurfette. Tell me you wouldn't be tickled at a 2 inch blue woman verbally sparring and winning a word fight against politicians upset at Compendium say taking out the Dragon Slayers on his own recognizance without following proper chain of command?
[X] 300 The Power + 300 Fell + Micro Bonus
The Power and The Big would make for a nice combo to tackle Behemoth, since Alex has multiple different Environmental protections against its Dynakinesis and Rex's Chakra Cloak to make it through the kill aura.
You don't need to have played Fell Seal to notice the Blood Magic Passive the Fell Varient gives is a great catch for Alex because of Solars practically inexhaustable vitality.
[X] 400 The Rain + 200 Feral
Torential downpours on command is definetly a power he could make use of, and Feral gives Howl and Know Weakness II, a spell that roots the target to the spot and a Passive to increase critical hit chance by 25%.
You don't need to have played Fell Seal to notice the Blood Magic Passive the Fell Varient gives is a great catch for Alex because of Solars practically inexhaustable vitality.
He has both Transformation powers to add modifiers like the Fell Seal Variants to allies and himself, and has been using Solar as a regeneration battery with Resource Network, simply because the output is so miniscule compared to what is regenerated with the Plant theme because of its sheer size.
From Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark.
The Fell Variant offers a 5% stat boost across the board if it's the primary modifier, as you can have two Variant modifiers equipped at once he could make Clockwork the secondary in this case, and it comes along with 2 Passives, a Counter, a Skill and a Spell. The second Passive, Blood Magic, takes 2% of the user's max HP for every 1 MP to use for an Ability, which is both Skills and Spells, rather than drawing from their MP pool.
For Alex, this could be used to cast magic even when drained or otherwise has insufficient mana to cast a spell, with Solar's regeneration trick keeping him topped up, or even for other Capes.
I honestly thought that The Power would be much more popular considering we already have limited access to rain from Buoy's Rain Dance.
But okay, if we want to flood something we can.
Okay, now that the vote is over and we're still deciding on a name for the Smurf, does anyone have any idea how we should use Zepar in a 24-hour time period?
Maybe more of she was into knitting and embroidery. Or a play on words of she was like Lovelace from Happy Feet. Or is there another play I'm not thinking of?
@zagan
What about maybelline, but like Smurflline, Smurfleline, Maybellsmurf?
I have been thinking over the results of the latest vote and what has been mentioned. I am wondering if it is worthwhile to turn The Rain into an Invocation via Dimensional Adaptation. The Invocation could be the summoning of brief, heavy rain over a large area, for example. The uses of such are niche for a superhero, particularly one working in a city. But if there are wide-spread fires or even just a need to bring water to drought-stricken regions it could be useful.
Mostly the purpose of it would be to differentiate The Rain from Buoy's Raindance move. Again, not sure if it is worth it.
Probably why Zagan wanted The Power more. Wonder how hard and fast The Rain can send down water. And is the water real or does it disappear right after?

No, transforming a Card into an Invocation would be mostly a waste. The only benefit would be that you wouldn't need Magic to power it, at the cost of only being able to use it once (or thrice) per day.
The Rain is however much more potent and versatile than the Raindance move. You can cover a much wider area, or a much smaller one, and the intensity can go from light drizzle to full-on monsoon.
Probably why Zagan wanted The Power more. Wonder how hard and fast The Rain can send down water. And is the water real or does it disappear right after?
It's not specifically that I want the Power more it's just that being able to increase someone's strength (even someone that's not a partner) could always come in handy, particularly since the effect can be modulated depending on the amount of magic given to it.
It might even have been viable as a creature to give away to make a respectable hero. And it would be discreet because the new hero could just use it on themselves at the start of the day in private, with no need to show anyone the staff or the card.
The Rain could also be given away, but the first time it's used people may wonder why that person uses a staff and a card exactly like Compendium sometimes did.
Concerning the strength of the falling water it can go pretty high. Quoting the wiki:
Rain rains down on Sakura and tries to drown her with a waterfall-like attack
So it's not a pressure washer but still respectable.
As for the water "reality", by default, it'll disappear when the Card is dismissed. But if you're willing to fed it a lot of magic, it could be made permanent. Or if it's just taking control of existing clouds.

Come to think of it, can Cards be given to Nimue? They do have independent forms but also function as magic spells in a way. I suppose they can be considered magically constructed spirits? I think they can be lent as normal Summons for Nimue but I don't know if she could also cast their magic in some way.
I assume not, though having The Rain make it rain on one of her floors and casting a spell using The Rain on one of her floors is an academic distinction at best.

Cards can be given to Nimue, yes, but with the ones we have its not very useful. And Alex got more use out of them.
As for environmental factors, any Dungeon can do that. Rain, wind, fog, harsh sunlight, etc...
For Nimue I hadn't specified anything like that, because she doesn't have many floor yet. On lower ones, those factors will come into play.

After hesitating for a while, I decided on Smurfrouge for the name of our Makeup Artist Smurfette. It does sound good, even if it's a little weird for me. Writing in Smurf was much easier than I anticipated. I still use an online translator sometimes, but in truth, it's not complicated.
Apart from that, this chapter is mostly set up for future events.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tuesday, 05/24/2011 (5 PM)
The second one is much more fun./It's called a Smurf./A little blue humanoid fairy that fits in the palm of our hand./They have a peculiar way to talk./The one we gained is called….
… Smurfrouge. She's a Makeup Artist, so that can come in handy./Apart from that Smurfs are known for their jumping prowess, able to jump something like four times their height. We may have a use for that with Equip Trait, either in place of The Jump or in addition to it.
I was quite intrigued by this new partner, as usual for sentient ones I was inclined to meet her in the real world before interacting in the Mental Realm. Looking at the gloomy atmosphere of the Pocket Biosphere, I decided that the setting wasn't really appropriate for a first meeting with a forest fairy.
Instead, I would kill two birds with one stone by reverse summoning myself to the Panda's valley. That way I could meet this Smurfette in an appropriate environment and retrieve my wood clones' memories.
Waving at the Pandas that I crossed paths with, I made my way toward a suitably forested area. Finding a clearing with two fallen logs facing each other didn't take long. I sat on one and summoned the Smurfette on the other. Looking at her, I saw an apple-sized blue humanoid, with short blue hairs with purple tips, big expressive blue eyes, and a cute button nose. She was wearing a sand-colored hat and a poncho, a tiny purple lily on her hat, and a purple backpack.
Upon spotting me, she started waving enthusiastically. "Hello there, it's a pleasure to smurf you. My name is Smurfrouge."
Despite expecting it, I was still caught off guard by her peculiar speaking style. "Hello Smurfrouge, my name is Alex Crewser. I'm a Keeper of the Celestial Menagerie and you are my newest partner. Do you know what that means?"
"Yep, yep, yep. I get to smurf you around in your adventures, and in exchange, I smurf for you." I could see her grinning at the prospect.
"That's good. Let me just give you some more details."
As I spoke, she jumped down from her perch, hopped over the distance separating us, and then jumped on my lap. Then she started poking and probing at my hand.
"Let me smurf a look at you. I never smurfed on human skin before. That will be a fun challenge."
That declaration left me a little bemused. "While I appreciate the enthusiasm, I don't have much need for makeup. If you want I have a girlfriend…"
She cut me off. "Nonsense. You're a smurfing masked hero. Of course, you need makeup, to smurf your identity." She jumped on my shoulder and I turned my head to look at her.
She tapped my cheek while looking thoughtful. "I can smurf you a fake tan. Or maybe smurf you some wrinkle to make you look older." She tapped her chin, visibly pondering what strategy to adopt. "But I'll need something easy to apply. And fast." She jumped on my head and sat down. "I'll need to smurf about it some more."
Understanding that nothing I would say would deter her from that train of thought, I decided to change the subject. "Well, while you're thinking about that, why don't I send you to meet my little sister? She's a plant girl, she might be interested in your expertise."
She jumped to her feet. "Plant! Wow, what could I even smurfing use? Let's go!"
And so I teleported Smurfrouge to Aylamon, who was currently home, helping Mom cook dinner.
Well, that was certainly a motivated one. Putting that matter aside It was now time to handle my wood clones. Absorbing their memories was a weird experience, there were some similarities with the memories implanted by the Menageries, and even more with the rejoining of my Minds when a summoning ended. But there were some differences too, fewer emotions mainly, wood clones didn't experience the world like real people. Their motions were mechanical in a way, programmed for a task and focused only on that task.
Still, that didn't prevent them from being effective, on the contrary, it somewhat helped. The one tasked with working on Chakra control turned out to be the least useful one. With the limited amount of chakra I've given it, using chakra was much easier but it made applying what it learned only marginally useful when working with higher reserves. That said it still bore some results.
The other two were more fruitful. One started learning the Earth Release: Flying Thrown Stones Doton jutsu from Laoban. For now, I could only produce two or three fist-size stones at a time, and they didn't go very far. When the Boss demonstrated it, he sent hundreds of boulder-sized stones, each one sharpened to a razor edge, more than five hundred meters away.
The last clone learned the Water Release: Water Characters jutsu from Sifu. At the moment characters were beyond me. I could do line or circle, and not much more. For his part Sifu could use it with ink instead of water, allowing him to create complex seals in an instant, at a distance.
In both cases, it was something to aspire to I guess. I fully intend to continue training, both by myself and with clones.
After spending a little more time with the Pandas, I returned home. There I found Aylamon watching a fashion show on television with Smurfrouge in her lap. When my little sister turned her head to look at me, it became apparent that she was the first victim of the Smurfette experiments.
Thick lines of eyeliners adorned her eyes, lipstick was applied around her mouth even though she didn't have lips as such, and blush had been applied to her cheek. For a first try, it wasn't too bad, even if it was a little too heavy for my taste. The makeup kit on the table proved that Mom was an accomplice.
After we had dinner together, I adjourned to my bedroom and called Crystal. We spent an hour on the phone talking about anything and everything. I told her about my day, considering that this time it wasn't classified I could tell her a lot more than yesterday. She laughed when I mentioned the arrest of Specter. And she was more than a little intrigued at the idea of meeting Smurfrouge. She wasn't much into makeup, but she did use some.
For her part, she was still deep in revision, so she didn't have much to tell me. However, we both fiercely wanted to see each other in person, so agreed to have breakfast together in a cafe she knew near the college the next day. She had no classes before ten, so it was the perfect time for us to meet.
I spent most of my night, in Nimue's Dungeon, in the Orb sparring with Cressidus, or working with Binder. With everything that I did today, I didn't have much time to train, so doing it at night made sense.
Finally, morning came and I was in front of the cafe at eight. I didn't have to wait long for my girlfriend to arrive. The kiss we shared before even exchanging a word was passionate. If we weren't in public we would have started snogging right there. With great reluctance, we parted and made our way inside.
As we ate our breakfast we kept flirting, the innuendos flying every which way. In any other circumstance, I would have been left a blushing mess but not with Crystal. With her, I was comfortable enough to flirt right back. It was a very enjoyable morning. In between our bout of flirting we did manage to exchange some meaningful information. After checking our schedule, we agreed that on Friday evening, we would have dinner at my home with Mom. She also let me know that she would be studying at the college library for the whole afternoon on Thursday, with her friends and that I was welcome. I promised her that I would come, at least to show some moral support.
Upon finishing breakfast, seeing that we still had an hour before Crystal needed to go, we decided to have a nice walk together arms in arms. This got quickly derailed when she spotted an empty alley and a wicked gleam appeared in her eyes. She shot me a smoldering look and guided me toward it, and once we were hidden she practically ordered me to open a portal to my quarters. I didn't protest overly much.
When we exited from the same place, half an hour later, both of us looked slightly flushed, wore silly smiles, and giggled each time we looked at each other. Thankfully, no one was around to comment.
We parted ways not long after that, after sharing one last kiss.
And so for the third day in a row, I made my way to the Rig in an excellent mood. My first stop was the training room, where I found Robin putting a punching bag through his pace.
The result of the Seeds was obvious. The reinforced bag was swinging every which way. Robin was using his speed in combination with his newfound strength to utterly destroy the bag. Repositioning himself after each punch at super speed, returning to normal to punch, before repeating that pattern ad infinitum. I even saw him doing an impressive jump kick.
With a final punch, the bag broke under the strain, sand spilling all over the floor.
I couldn't help it, I started applauding. Robin didn't appear surprised by my presence, no doubt he spotted me while under accelerated perception. "Impressive results. I see that the seeds agreed with you."
Robin grinned. "They did, didn't they? It's like night and day." He made a show of flexing his biceps.
We talked for a bit, about his experience eating the seeds, ten of strength and ten of resilience each day for a week. Feeling himself getting progressively stronger and tougher. The daily medical exams and power tests were a bit of a hassle but well worth it in his opinion. He couldn't wait to try it out during patrol.
I still hoped to give him a partner of his own at some point, but in the meantime, this was already a fantastic start.
As we talked, the Menagerie gifted a new partner, a card.
It's been a while since we gained our last card. this time it's The Rain./As usual the name is self-explanatory. This little guy can generate rain./I can see multiple uses for that, firefighting being the main one./And in combat hindering the vision of your foes would be another nice use.
Yes, the ability to make it rain on command was appreciated. And I realized that now I had access to both rain and sun. Well, I already had limited access to rain with Buoy, but The Rain card was much stronger. I could see myself giving it away after the secret of Grant Summoning got out, having a hero specialized in combating fire could be nice.
After my talk with Velocity, it was time for us to patrol. My punishment had finally ended, and I was allowed to patrol once more. Even if it was just a PR patrol on the boardwalk. I had the funny thought that it was weird to consider being stopped from patrolling as a punishment. Shouldn't it be the opposite? Being forced to patrol instead of relaxing on console duties or doing boring paperwork. But considering that it was a punishment for Parahuman, who had the urge to use their power, it makes a twisted kind of sense.
In my case, I wasn't a normal Parahuman, and I still got to do a lot of things with my power during that week. So it wasn't a terribly effective form of punishment.
Walking through town with my partners by my side, answering questions, signing autographs, or taking photos, wasn't unpleasant. It's not something that I would like to do every day but on occasion, I could do it. The fact that I was followed by an array of creatures that could be a bit intimidating, helped a fair bit. Approaching a popular hero for an autograph took a bit more courage than usual when a dragon was flying overhead and an intimidating troll was shadowing him.
Nothing of any real note happened, during the patrol itself. I didn't get to stop any crimes. There was no accident, just a three-hour stroll around the Boardwalk with the occasional stop to talk to people.
When we got back to the Rig, and after having a brief lunch, Colin called for a team meeting, the first one with Strega and Taurus.
We started by formally introducing the two to the team, though we didn't reveal our names. Then Colin gave us an overview of what happened during the last week, a few updates to the procedure to handle prisoners, and some info about our vacation days.
There was one event of note. Yesterday, Hannah and Jamie encountered a young woman, a minor telekinetic, during one of their patrols, going by the name Whirligig. She was fleeing some aggressive recruitment attempts being made by the Merchants. After calming her down, the two heroines brought her to the HQ, so she could rest.
From what they could gather, the young woman had been in town since Leviathan's attack. She came through Strider with a bunch of other volunteers, more to flee from her hometown than to participate. She admits to some minor crimes, mostly shoplifting to feed herself. And that's how Skidmark heard about her.
After some discussion, she agreed to join the Protectorate but she refused to stay in the Bay. Demanding to move to another city with a strong preference for the west coast. A request was sent to other teams to see if anyone was willing to take her. Colin didn't expect that it would take too long.
I was caught off guard by the last announcement at the end of the meeting.
"As you know, only one significant Parahuman-lead gang remains in Brockton Bay, the Archer's Bridge Merchants."
We all nodded in unison at Colin's declaration.
"With only Skidmark and Squealer remaining it is likely that they're starting to get desperate. Not too long ago they teamed up with the Teeth to assault our base, and with Squalear apparition tech they are still dangerous." He glanced my way. "Compendium's recent action may have cowed them for a time, but it won't last. They need to be dealt with."
I didn't expect that, it was quite rare for the Protectorate to go on the offensive. Ethan was the first one to react. "We're going after them?"
Colin gave a solemn nod. This prompts an exchange of smiles all around.
After clearing his throat to focus our attention, Colin continued. "I've planned our assault on their base for Friday at ten. With their typical nocturnal lifestyle, acting in the morning should catch them by surprise."
I could see the logic. I started thinking about what partners to use with Minds weighing our options for different scenarios. My attention was pulled back to the meeting when Colin addressed me.
"Compendium, you won't be participating in this operation."
I blinked, confident that I heard right but not quite believing it. "May I ask why?"
"We need to show that the local Protectorate is competent even without you. If you or your partners were present, everyone would assume that you did all the work."
Thinking about it, I was forced to admit that this was a fair point. I didn't like it but I could understand the reasoning. Not that I wish to monopolize the attention, I received far too much of it already. Or that I didn't think they'd be able to do it. Even without including the two newcomers, pitting the six original members of the team against the two remaining Merchant capes, even with a defensive position and an assortment of drug-addled minions, would be seriously overkill.
It was just that, if I was there I could assist in case of problems.
With some reluctance, I nodded. "Very well, I'll just guard the fort then."
Colin appeared pleased by my acceptance. Perhaps he expects some resistance on my part. He turned toward the former Adepts. "It's too soon to include you in such a big operation. We haven't worked on teamwork yet. You'll be guarding the PRT building."
Zach appeared a little disappointed by that, but Scarlett looked relieved.
The rest of the meeting was dedicated to planning the assault in detail. I didn't contribute much, but it was interesting to observe the plan growing with everyone's contribution. How they took into account the strengths and weaknesses of each member of the team. Even Zach and Scarlett managed to contribute by giving some suggestions, the majority of which were dismissed but not before being given serious consideration.
I was also a little amused to note that even though I wouldn't participate, I was still influencing things, both Colin and Hannah had a partner, Robin had become a Brute and Striker, and they were all wearing totems, with Shawn having enhanced his own. And all those power-ups were taken into account.
When the meeting concluded a solid plan had been drafted. As the other left, Colin asked me to stay behind. I remained in my seat and watched as he gathered some papers before turning toward me. He remained silent for a few moments before speaking up.
"Thank you for not asking to participate."
I shrugged. "You're still the leader, it wasn't my place to protest. Plus the reasons you gave are perfectly valid."
He inclined his head. "Perhaps, but if you had insisted it would have put me in a difficult position. So I appreciate your restraint."
"Thank you. And while I seriously doubt it will be needed should something go wrong, I'll be there in a flash."
Colin gifted me with one of his rare smiles. "That is reassuring."
We parted ways after that. We both had work to do. I passed by my office, my clone was doing excellent work handling the paperwork. Notably, it allowed me to read and answer some fan mail, instead of delegating everything to the PR department. My favorite parts of that were the children's drawings. I couldn't keep them all, there was just no room. However, my favorite ones got hung on the walls, and the others were carefully put in folders and archived.
And Aggretsuko continued to excel as my secretary. She informed me that the Mayor's office sent a message. The negotiations to get rid of the tanker were finally over, the only thing left to do was to fix the date. It could happen as soon as next week. This was excellent news. Getting rid of the gang was a good thing, but improving the economic prospect of the city would help in preventing new one from forming.
After this, I opened a portal to the Biosphere to once again use Random Summoning.
In the end, I didn't do anything with Zepar's Metal Vessel. Despite my Minds working overtime on the problem I couldn't find any ethical use for mind control available with only a twenty four hour window. Long-term possibilities exist, and if I ever gained Zepar for real, I wouldn't hesitate before using them but for now, I said goodbye to the ring. I felt my temporary Magoi reserve disappearing.
The results of Random Summoning today weren't great, a small tunnel-delving bird, a cute but harmless fish Pokemon, and a big robot. Clank took a scan of the robot and I put the fish in a pond with Buoy and Perry so they could talk. But that was about it.
As if to compensate, the Menagerie gave me something new.
A new Modifier, specifically a new Variant./It's been a very long time since the last Modifier of this sort, in fact, the last one was the very first one we ever gained, Clockwork./This one is called Guard./As the name suggest this one is defense-oriented./Passively, it grants some nice benefits, notably an immunity to several Mind affecting effects. A little redundant for us, but nice all the same. A cool passive effect is that any enemies that pass too close to a Guard will be briefly stopped in their tracks. With our ability to apply Modifiers on the fly to our partners, it will make for a fantastic battlefield control tool./There's also an ability called Vanguard if the Guard and an ally are both subjected to a damaging area of effect, the ally will take less damage and the Guard will be healed./In a similar vein, a Guard can target a nearby ally, and if that ally is subjected to an attack the damage would be transferred to the Guard./But the one that interests me the most is called Fleet of Foot, it increases the speed of the Guard and that of any nearby allies for a short time./It's not the most flashy effect, but it can certainly be put to good use./There is one drawback to this Modifier, in that using it at the same time as Clockwork means that we can't have all the benefits at the same time, but it's nothing major./And lastly it's a far less obvious transformation, it only manifests as a reinforced vest on the subject.
While less flashy than Clockwork, and overall weaker, this Modifier was indeed very promising. Applying it to myself, the vest appeared under my costume. For those who knew me, it was possible to notice but for the public, I doubt anyone would spot the difference.
With that business dealt with I need to get ready for tonight. It was time to free a Dragon and slay a knight.

There we go. Next chapter the Dragonslayers. No vote because I don't think we need any grand strategy to handle those guys.

Important Question: I, as the author, want to give Crystal something from the Menagerie, soonish. That's because if she received something from Grant Summoning she'll be able to join Alex when he started travelling through other Dimensions. (Remember that only recipients can come with him). And I think it's important that she came because their relationship just started and having it be put on hold, with no way to communicate, for a month each time Alex traveled wouldn't work. I still have a number of things for Alex to do before he starts traveling, but I want to be prepared. Of course, their relationship won't be the focus but I'd much prefer it if they were together so that can continue to progress in the background.
Like we did with Miss Militia, we'll be getting that entry for free (no point spent, no roll) for the express purpose of giving it to Crystal.
So, my question is what entry worth 700 points max should be given to Crystal? It can be a Creature of course, but also a Modifier (with the Self Modifier power) or a unique power (transformation, bloodline, class, etc…).
It needs to be something that makes sense. Obviously, something that synergizes with her power would be ideal, but Alex's goal in giving her something is to protect her. So something that also enhances her survivability would be highly prized. Also, keep in mind that Crystal sees herself as a part-time heroine, she fully intends to continue heroing but she also wants to finish her studies and find a mundane job. So she can't afford to train that often. At some point, she will gain a class (I don't know what yet, ideas are welcome for that too) from Nimue but progress will be slow, she will also eat seeds like Velocity. That may also be factors to take into account.
As I said it's not urgent, and I already have some ideas of my own, but I'm open to suggestions.
... I suppose Alex never had a chance to use it before, but he also has the Rampart Passive Skill from his Beastmaster Class, it helps keep an enemy in range for Pet Effects in game.
Well I think we should give crystal a Pokemon Specifically Shaymin sky form I think that would be a good Partner for Crystal to fight along side with and a Great bonding experience with Alex teaching her about pokemon in the background
The Emerald Eye - Would presumably enhance Crystal's lasers while also granting her a certain amount of super strength and the ability to create green lantern like constructs kinda like her brother. The only major downside to me is that it would be an amazing option for creating a new hero.
Crystalsapien - Has similar laser abilities to Crystal and she could potentially use it's ability to absorb energy to enhance her own lasers.
