The Imperium and Singing
A thing to keep in mind is that, though they are many things, the Imperium is not capitalist, so singing is going to be a very common past time, group bonding activity, and part of most every workplace, as it was in almost every culture around the world before the commodification of music and the corresponding shaming of those whose voices were not good enough to be professional (which was echoed along a lot of common social arts).

Imagine the factory Praxis worked at, singing a song together about building the tanks, using the tempo to stay on task. Imagine the electric hum of a Mechanicus forge at work as Marvel Ann and her peers busied about their day. Imagine Charitina dragging herself out of her office to evening services, when the choir was the only thing that made her feel alive. Kilimnik and his copilot harmonizing in the void. Bookter humming to himself as he reads. Dahlia muttering the bars of hymn to calm herself before bed.

The Imperium is truly terrible, but they haven't found a way to crush the music out of people yet.

I suppose it would depend on which part of the Imperium we're talking about, though I agree on the whole. There's probably an undercurrent of bigotry and reaction against forms of art deemed by the hegemony to be deviant-- that monodominant inquisitor that tried virus bombing the last planet we were on exhibited such traits.

True, but by the same token, there is no compelling reason to think that large-scale sinking is at all widely regarded as deviant by the hegemony.

It really is deeply depressing that people are annoyed when I burst into song at the office tbh...

6-3: Have Faith
"I'm not particularly eager to take on a shuttle full of evacuees who might turn on us." you said, indicating to Marvel Ann, "Get everything ready to take a sample. Brother Demirel-"

"I've already told him. We're shifting to hold." Demirel said, having voxed ahead, "Make it quick."

You took a deep breath, then you opened the door and spoke.

"Hold your fire, I'm a friend!"

Shots ran out, shotgun blasts. They were utterly deafening in the confines of the narrow corridors, and almost immediately you heard crying. Saints, there were children.

Of course there was. You hated thinking about it, but there were always children.

"Leave us alone!" a voice screamed after you, a woman, hoarse and clearly at the edge of her sanity. "Get back, beasts!"

You sighed. If they had been found, this would be death for them, but it was admirable they were still resisting.

"This is Inquisitor Joanyn Praxis of the Inquisitor. I have with me a Space Marine of the Gate Wardens chapter. We're are going to be destroying this ship, and we are extending you a chance to escape. Please, have faith."

Brother Demirel added his own voice, amplified by his helmet.

"We are here to protect you. Please. Come quickly."

"If you do not believe me, send one of your own to see." you added. A perfect cover to test them, too.

You could hear their voices discuss it. You did not have time for this, but the fact was that Brother Demirel wasn't fitting in there, so there was no way to force compliance.

"If we send someone out there, they'll get turned into one of them. I've seen it!"

"It's a lie anyway! There ain't no woman inquisitors!"

"They're just trying to get us to eat us!"

The voices devolved into an overlapping babble, then cries and screams, and a person came around the corner. A young woman, small, filthy, barefoot, her hair wild, an infant in her arms.

You offered her a hand, and she took it, stepping out, tears already forming in her eyes. Marvel Ann moved up to take her sample, and you held her hand, reassuring her. Just a quick test, to make sure you aren't sick, you said.

Blood drawn into a needle, a drop in a test tube, a bloom of colour. It would take minutes to resolve, Marvel Ann had told you, minutes you spent praying, holding this woman's hand, telling her everything was going to be okay. Your heart was in your throat, and you found yourself muttering a prayer to the Emperor, to all the saints, please, please, not here, not now, not today, spare your servant-

Behind her, Marvel Ann shook her head sadly.

Whelp. That's the most obvious sympathy target.
Behind her, Marvel Ann shook her head sadly.
So here's the question: Do we truly sift through the group? Or do we have the Marine stick his gun down the hole and shoot?

Well, since she's a part of the Gene-stealer hive mind we could interrogate her as to how many of the group are implanted. But that not only falls under the 'take up time we don't have' downside of sifting, but it's opening room for complications like lying and discerning the truth.

Im thinking something along the lines of:

[] Smile, nod, tell her she's ok, usher her down the corridor, once they are all out, get them to the Thunderhawk, make up an excuse to sedate them (space sickness?), test them all, euthanise the infected and save the rest.

They're infected, then? That's horrible, especially given standard imperial policy when it comes to it.

So we've got a few options. We can test them all and see if they're all infected in an isolated ward on our ship. We can also leave them and blow up the ship with them on board. Undoubtedly such an act would carry significant penalties to Praxis' mental health. Ugh. If the Space Marines overheard they might just exterminate them anyway without a trial process.

Even in the best case scenario, in that we screen them, we're still looking at horrible outcomes for the people we've come to "save." One radical option would be to separate the infected and try to find a cure, but I'm afraid whether the Astartes would even accept such a proposal.

I think there is here a temptation to achieve a victory - over the gene stealers, over the situation - while at the same time potentially losing track of the bigger risks and bigger picture. Yes, Praxis wants to save everyone (or as much as possible), but what is realistically achievable under the circumstances?

The infected, to the best of Marvel Ann's knowledge (and she has looked into this, it's sort of a big emergency in the Imperium right now) are not part of the broodmind the way that the hybrids are, but rather being loosely controlled through psychic compulsion by the Patriarch. They themselves usually don't know they are infected, just that they become drawn towards whatever the broodmind points them at. That's why they form a cult, rather than simply unfeelingly following the whim of the alien intelligence.

I think you've forgotten we're not dealing with the Minotaurs or Marines Malevolent. We're dealing with Space U.S. Marines.

Yeah, it's telling the moment the 'kill them or take them to the shuttle' comes into question, people start forgetting that when they get into a shuttle they can kill us all. The gut-reaction to "I don't want to kill children" starts overriding all other elements.

[] Inquire Ann on the viability of preparing an empty space onboard the Strike Cruiser for screening the crew members for genestealer infection.

Could we justify sparing the infected for the purpose of researching a cure? Looks like a long-shot, but that's all I can think of at the moment given that Imperial dogma depersons anyone with "xenos" taint. We could conceivably moore them on an unoccupied planet in this solar system, assuming there's anything habitable and unoccupied (probably not).

The Imperium kills all: the mutant, the heretic, the unclean.

Joanyn...

Joanyn Praxis' most radical thought is 'It doesn't have to be this way."

Come to think of it, I wonder what your interpretation of the Tyranids will be. Should be interesting if we ever go around to facing the Hive Mind.

Edit: Ok, I wonder if there's already a treatment method for genestealer infection. Probably not, sadly, given the Imperial attitude to everything nonhuman. Still, we can try. Hells, we can ask Araleth for information in return for a favor, even!

Well, unless the way a Gene-stealer organ implanting works has been radically changed by Sketch, there is no cure. So yeah. The mother's dead.

You seem to be under the incorrect assumption that the the issue is whether or not the Marine kills them all.

The issue is a matter of we are out of time and need to leave now. We can't call for a third shuttle, the Marines are barely holding the massive swarm of Purestrains and armed Hybrids back.
Is there any hope that the babies would be uninfected due to the difficulty of doing so without breaking them?
Unlikely. To my knowledge there is no such difficulty and newborn hybrids all have an unconscious thralling effect on the parents.

It should be noted: the kid is not, as best Praxis can tell, a horrible multi-armed monster.
