The planet of Temaris is located in the Mid Rim, down the Corellian Run. To get there, one must turn off the Run and take a small jump towards the local hyperspace route named The Angel's Passage. Temaris had seen better days. It was still suffering from the big Mid Rim Economy Crash fifty years ago. Since then, the planet had barely managed to recover. Not much different from the rest of the Temaris Sector or, generally speaking, secondary systems in the Mid Rim.

The only thing that made this system different from most other systems could be found in its orbit, the shipyards owned by your family. Not many systems could say that they had their own yards, even if your family yards only built ships under license and did repairs for locals.

But now, even that was in danger.

You turned your back to the planet that sat below you and looked at your father. The man you always thought looked so strong had grown old. His face showed the worry he was feeling. And the fire in his eyes was almost gone. He sat where he always sat, in his chair behind the expensive desk your great-grandfather had bought when times had been better.

"How long?"

"A year? Maybe two if we get another order for a new build. At most three if I fire everyone who isn't essential." He chuckled grimly and took another sip of his drink. "Trust me, I've been over the numbers more than once. Then I had these numbers checked by experts. We will go under, that is certain."

"Why are you telling me all of this now?"

"To warn you and because it is your right to know. You're my only child. People will assume that you know about it. And even if I did my best to shield you from the consequences of my failure, I fear that I can't take all of it. Some will be laid at your feet, even if you're completely innocent." He then set his glass down and grabbed a pad lying before him. He held it up so you could see it. "And then there is this. You remember what this is?"

Your father held a proposal you had made several years ago. It took a moment before it clicked in your head. Slowly, you nodded. "Yes. I suggested that we start to build our own ships, seeing as it would be more profitable for us in the long run."

"And do you know what I told you then?"

"'We've built ships under license since the founding. It has always been good enough, and it will be good enough in the future.' And that new ships were expensive, risky. A risk you weren't ready to take. Not if the livelihoods of our workers were on the line."

Your father put the pad down and sighed heavily. He looked defeated as he nodded. "Yes, that is what I foolishly said. I was too proud to see my mistakes. We had some money problems already, but I thought I could manage. If we just did what we had done for years, it would all be okay, I told myself. That it was just a phase, the market always has some fluctuation… I was wrong. Now my only hope is your idea. If we can pull this off, get it at least rolling, I can get enough credits to hold us afloat. Hopefully, long enough to earn some credits with our own design. Do you think you can do it?"

"I don't know, father, but I will do my best."

"Good. I will give you all the credits we can scrape together. You're our only hope!"

You're a human…
[ ] of male sex.
[ ] of female sex.

Choose one Trait:

[ ] Heavy Freighter (+10 on rolls for Heavy Freighters)
Your family mostly built heavy freighters in the past. Even if these were all made under license, you're most familiar with how these ships work.

[ ] Light Freighters (+10 on rolls for Light Freighters)
Your family mostly built light freighters in the past. Even if these were all made under license, you're most familiar with how these ships work.

[ ] Modifications (+10 Research rolls)
If someone wishes to order a custom rebuild or a simple modification for their ship, they come to your family's yards.

[ ] Cheap Labour (-5 Starting Cost)
Thanks to the recession and other historical factors, production in the Temaris system has always been cheap. This will help when you start producing your own design.

[ ] Well Connected: Temaris Sector (???)
Your family knows half of the sector personally, or so it feels sometimes. This could come in handy.

Rules

Rules

Action
The number of actions you can take is limited by the Budget you have. You need to funnel the Budget down to the different departments to work. In the departments, you choose what actions these departments take.

Budget
The Budget is represented by a number given at the beginning of a turn. You will need at least 1 Budget in any department to keep it running. Any additional Budget can be used for actions. You can spend more than 1 Budget per action to get another d100 if you want, showing priority projects.
You get more Budget the better the Company performs, meaning how good your designs are.

Departments
Your company is made up of different departments that have different purposes. Each of them needs money to work properly. In the beginning, you only have a few departments. You can gain other departments later on. The starting departments are:
  • Design
  • Research
  • Production
More can be added. This is useful if you want to perform more specialist tasks. For example, a Department of the Research branch dedicated towards Engines or a Production Department just for Weapons and so on.

Rolls
Only a single d100 will be rolled per action, with added modifiers if they exist. The result will add to the Progress Counter, which needs to be filled for an action to happen. If it isn't filled with a single roll representing a complex action, a delay has occurred, or the task is too complicated to finish in a single turn.

Traits
These are modifiers that come into play during specific steps, with the specifics listed in the description of the trait. They can be positive or negative when added to a roll result.

Ship Stats
Depending on the parts chosen, different ships will be built. Each part of it has an influence on the performance of a ship. These stats are:
  • Compartment
  • Speed
  • Maneuverability
  • Weapons
  • Special Compartment
  • Cost
These will be modifiers for ship rolls that come into play when tested. Each stat starts at 0. The different numbers go up or down with each part added, depending on the part chosen.

Opening 2
After your father had given you the go-ahead, the next month was filled with a head-spinning number of things that needed to be done. Even with the help from your father's personal staff, it was still a complicated task to be done. You needed to create three completely new departments in the company. And if that hadn't been complicated enough, you needed to do so relatively quickly, considering the financial situation the company was facing.

For the Design Department, you decided against any experienced personnel. Instead, you hired students fresh from university who had just finished their education. They all were starry-eyed and very enthusiastic. Your father sent in one of his own to rein them in and control some of the expected outbursts. Gaath Kootto had worked for your family for three decades. The old Mon Cal had a bit of a grumpy reputation mixed in with a credit pincher attitude. Of all the people in the company, he had at least done some design work before he had washed up in the Accounting Department. Gaath had an eye for a good design and, at the same time, would ensure that the young hot-heads wouldn't burn the departments' budget in their first design. Gaath already hated his job and complained that he felt like a tadpole's header. And yet, he looked less grumpy than during his time with the accountants.

With the Research Department, you at least hadn't had to start from scratch. With Dhin Nerroma, a Bothan woman, and her team, you had a small group of reassigned personnel who had some experience with unique ships. Before, they had mainly handled custom builds or modifications, which required extensive ship rebuilds. This had required finding out which parts worked with each other or bridged differences that seemed impossible. Additionally, you hired some personnel from outside. Dhin seemed happy about them and couldn't wait to get to work.

Thor D'non was an experience, even before you basically stole him from the Repair Department. He was a Jawa, a small species from the Arcanis Sector in the Outer Rim. Before him, you had never seen one of his kind or even heard of them. But he was highly skilled when it came to repairs and on-the-spot solutions. The head of the Repair Department now hated you, from now on until the universe's end. But maybe that had less to do with Thor D'non leaving his department and more with the fact that you also took half of his department.

With the departments set up and ready to work, you finally had time to look at the total budget your father had given you. You were surprised; the amount was as grand as he had promised, and that made you feel nervous. You truly realized that the family business indeed relied on you and your idea.

No pressure at all.

Finally, the time had come to meet all of your department heads. Before this, you had met with them occasionally when it became relevant for their departments. It was the first time they all were gathered in a conference room together. They were, of course, no strangers to each other, as they all had been with the company for at least five years or more. So that awkwardness wasn't there, but it was still new for them. You could tell that easily enough by the sidelong glances they all gave each other. Not surprising, as before, they had maybe met each other in a corridor or at some festivity but never shared a conference table.

You still decided to follow the usual introduction spiel simply because it set everyone's mind at ease. After that was done, you came to the real reason for the meeting.

"Okay, now that we all know who the others are, let us begin. When I informed you about this meeting, I told you to gather ideas for a ship concept within your departments. Furthermore, I also wanted to hear why you decided to bring the concept before us. Now the time has come to show us your ideas. Remember, there isn't a right or wrong here. This is about gathering ideas. We can from there start to check what will be possible or not."

When you got two nods and an enthusiastic sound from Thor, you nodded pleased. You looked towards Gaath, who returned the look with his fish-like eyes and sighed. The Mon Cal stood up and cleared his raspy voice, not really helping him sound clearer in any way. As he started to talk, he activated the holoprojector, and a concept design for a light freighter appeared.

"My Department had two ideas: a light freighter or a utility craft. Personally, I think that the light freighter is the better idea. Usually, construction is based around a small crew of two to five. Capacity of around 75 to 80 metric tons. The intended usage would be on short trips to neighboring planets or to serve within a sector. Considering that most of the bulk transport across the galaxy have been monopolized, it would be harder to sell anything heavier. Plus, the last few years have seen an upswing in the popularity of light freighters everywhere in the galaxy."

He pressed another button, and the holo of the light freighter was replaced by a new ship. This one was basically a ball with engines and two arms. Gaath's face grew a bit darker as he stared at the holo. "This is the utility craft that we propose. It is basically a cockpit with an engine. The arms are for work in space and can be replaced with several tools. You're all familiar with what I'm talking about, considering we're working in a space yard. Still, half of my team think it could be a good idea to build them. Cheap, easy build, and a wide field for usage, besides the 'yard."

"You disagree?"

The old Mon Calamari sighed again. "Not exactly, boss. The vehicle could be quickly planned and produced. The thing is, I don't think that it will give us good access to the market. There exists plenty of these in the galaxy. The same is true for the light freighter, just that people are buying light freighters, and the market is at the moment still open for smaller entries. We should concentrate on that, this utility craft we can build later."

"Thank you, Gaath." You turned to the only woman at the table. Dhin Nerroma's fur looked calm enough as the Bothan returned the look. "Dhin, your turn."

The woman stood up with the grace of a feline predator. Her fingers quickly danced over the controls of the holoprojector, and a new ship design replaced the utility craft Gaath had just introduced. The new ship concept was rougher than the two before, but considering that Dhin was running Research and not Design, that could be excused. As she started to speak, she pointed to the lazy rotating image the projector showed in the air. "We think that a heavy freighter would be our best, first ship. The reasons for this are simple: they will be bought. Now, Gaath was right, that most of the heavy lifting that happens in sectors and between them is in the hands of the Trade Federation and their like. But, this overlooks the high number of medium businesses that have crawled up in the last decade in the Mid Rim. They have started to push into bulk trading but can't get ships that fit them. Something like the Action series from CEC. It came to our surprise when we found that the market is rather lacking in such ships of the lower heavy freighter class."

Pointing towards her datapad, she continued. "I've loaded your pads with the relevant market analyses we have conducted. The numbers aren't lying. Let's act quickly enough, and we can offer buyers a reasonably priced alternative to the Action series. We'll have a foot in the door of the heavy freighter market before the niche is closed."

You nodded towards her as she sat down and gave the report she had managed a quick glance. The numbers did look promising. "Right, thanks, Dhin. I will take a closer look at these numbers later. Thor? I think it is your turn."

The small non-human wearing a brown cloak bounced up, filled with barely contained energy as he started to speak in his own voice. He continued to talk and ignored the panicked reaction from his translation droid which seemed overwhelmed with the words coming from the small alien at such a rate.

"Ah, Master Thor greets you all and hopes that you all found water this morning. He also wishes to inform you that he is excited about the proposals of both Master Gaath and Mistress Dhin. Both should be in the range of the ability of his team. He also has a proposal of his own." You weren't sure about it, but considering the high number of fast fired words coming from the Jawa, the droid seemed to cut some parts out of it. If Thor was bothered by that, he didn't show it in the slightest. He even made some explosion noises and the appropriate motions with his hands to underline his words. Here his tone got even more excited, if that was even possible. "My master suggested that we should enter the market for military vehicles and ships. He recently read an article in the Tamaris Gazette that starfighters are the great new thing any PDF wants. And if that isn't something that we wish to build, he suggests that we try and build corvettes."

You lifted your eyebrows, surprised when the droid translated the words from Thor. At the same time, the Jawa hit the control buttons for the projector. Two new but badly drawn ships appear in the air. One looked like a fighter craft. The other had some resemblance with the new CR70 Corvettes that CEC had recently presented to the public.

"My master wishes to inform you that the fighter would be a multipurpose model. Aimed to bolster PDFs cheaply and go with the current trend in military circles. The corvette, on the other hand, could be aimed at either exclusively the military market or also the civilian market as escorts for larger convoys."

"Okay…," you said slowly as Thor sat down, "to be honest, I think we will have problems finding buyers for this. The market is cornered by large companies. At least for your corvette idea. The fighter could be a good idea, I think. From what I've read in the recent reports, the big companies leave the market mostly open. They don't see profit in it yet. So we might just have a chance there. I will think about it. Thank you, Thor, and you two too."

In addition to the ideas your three department heads had, your father also sent you a small list of procurements that were currently going on in the sector. Thanks to your family's connections within the Temaris Sector, you had the chance to take part in some of them. The question is, do you wish to do so? If you decide to do it, you have to concentrate on it with all departments if you want to compete with other companies.

Pick one!

[ ] No bid
You've decided against entering any procurement processes for now. That doesn't mean you can't offer your designs later on, just that you don't want that kind of stress and pressure right now on your team.

[ ] The Pride of the Fleet
The Temaris Protection Fleet is looking for a new flagship. Reading the procurement document is almost as if someone decided to simply copy the description of a Dreadnought from Rendili StarDrive. The only difference is the measurements of the ship wanted and the price, both lower than the standard offer from Rendili.

[ ] The Parcelmasters' Dream
The Fast Delivery Parcel service, FDP for short, is a point of pride for the Temaris Sector. It recently suffered from the same setbacks as the rest of the sector. The new Parcelmaster wants to get newer and faster courier vessels to combat this.

[ ] Hutt Air
Gamala the Hutt, a wealthy businesswoman in the sector, has recently stated at a party that she was thinking about going into the passenger business. But she wants a unique ship that gives even the everyday worker a good time.

Total Budget: 10

Design Department

[ ][Design][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.

[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Light Freighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Light Freighters come in all shapes and forms. Some fast, others with a great range, and so on. It is time to design your own.

[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Heavy Freighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Heavy Freighters are the backbone of interstellar trading. They are, in theory, easy to build. You've never built one, just repaired them, so you don't know for sure.

[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Utility Craft
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: In the orbital industry, not only in shipbuilding, small crafts are used every day. They are called Utility Craft, and there never seems to be enough despite how many models are on the market.

[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Corvette
Progress: 0 of 150
Description: Corvettes are used by every military in the galaxy to some extent. The market is hard fought over by such names as Kuat Drive Yards and CEC. Entering this arena will be risky, but the profits…

[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Fighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: The new lovechild from the Deep Core to the Mid Rim if it comes to "new" and "hip" military "geniuses." The market hasn't been cornered yet. Maybe you can corner it a bit.

[ ][Design][2B] A Cruiser
Progress: 0 of 250
Requires: The Pride of the Fleet
Description: The TPF wants a new flagship. You're sure that they wish for a Dreadnought-style ship from the procurement text alone. But maybe a homebrew construct could win. After all, military contracts never go to the best or the cheapest (even if soldiers tell you differently), but to the ones with the best connections.

[ ][Design][1B] A Courier
Progress: 0 of 150
Requires: The Parcelmasters' Dream
Description: To build a fast ship will be some hard work, but it can be done. And then the whole sector will see your ships covered in the logo of the FDP. Free advertisement at its finest, especially if your ship can beat the competition.

[ ][Design][2B] A luxury passenger
Progress: 0 of 300
Requires: Hutt Air
Description: To build a large luxury passenger for the average worker will be quite a task. But if you get that done, you will earn some friends in Hutt space, you're sure, and among the working class.

Research Department

[ ][Research][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.

[ ][Research][1B] Class 5 Hyperdrive
Progress: 0 of 500
Description: A Class 5 Hyperdrive is the slowest drive seen on the market, often built-in as an emergency drive should the main one fail. If we want to start building our own hyperdrives, Class 5 is the point.

[ ][Research][1B] Basic Sublight Engines
Progress: 0 of 250
Description: Every starship needs sublight engines for travel outside hyperspace. We should start learning how to build basic ones ourselves before we go for larger and better sublight engines.

[ ][Research][1B] Basic Hull Plating
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Most people in the galaxy won't give two thoughts about the hull plates that protect them from the void through which they travel. But the truth is, it is hard to come up with the right mixture of metals and other things to make these plates. We should start with something basic.

[ ][Research][1B] Basic Shielding
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: Most weapons used in the galaxy are either blaster or laser-based. Accordingly, any ship manufacturer worth his name will provide basic protection against these. In theory, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with one ourselves.

[ ][Research][1B] Basic Blaster
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Blasters are the ideal weapon for close combat situations, making them perfect for civilian ships. We should take a look into building our own.

[ ][Research][1B] Basic Laser
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: Most military ships use lasers, thanks to their ability to fight at longer distances. If we wish to push into the military market, we should first develop basic laser weapons.

Production Department

[ ][Production][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Hyperdrives
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: Currently the company hasn't the knowledge or the facilities to produce something like a hyperdrive themselves. That means you need offers from other companies that do build hyperdrives.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Sublight Engines
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: Any ship requires some form of sublight engine. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something of your own, but until that is the case, you will need to buy somewhere else.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Plating
Progress: 0 of 25
Description: It shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to produce hull plates that your ships require.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Shielding
Progress: 0 of 150
Description: Some of your designs require shields, not the navigational but actually protective ones. Even civilian variations cost a lot. Hopefully, there are some cheap offers.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Weapons
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: Weapons are restricted on most Republican worlds and not easily bought in bulk. Still, there are plenty of companies that offer ship-graded weapons. The absolute nightmare is the bureaucracy behind it.

Could we design the Modular Cutter from traveller
Modular Cutter - Traveller
It is possible, the thing is that the modules need to be comparable to what is on the market. Around the same time Kuat tries something like that and fails because they tried to be exclusive with the modules.

But aside that, it is possible that you can build something like that.

A question. How expensive, and how useful would a 25-30mm Thermal detonator ballistic autocannon round be against fighter shields?
Expensive how? Regular infantry were issued the things along with ion grenades. Combined with a PDF only fighting limited actions, not needing to be reliant on contracting expensive industrial assets or relying on imports to maintain the fighting effectiveness of your near planetary guards would be a major plus for the typical poor world that doesn't do much business with its neighbors.
Given that most fighters at this time aren't shielded, any proxy explosion can be lethal. The problem is that a Thermal Detonator uses Baradium, which is expensive. If you want to build a frak shell and shoot it at peasants in starfighters, use something cheaper. Like what is used in grenades (used by ground forces and often called detonators, even if they aren't the same thing). The problem with this is that:

A: Starfighters are just coming out in large masses until now most PDFs rather liked their Capital ships.

B: People will come up with shields that fit into them (that is the biggest problem at the moment) and counter your weapons before it is even on a wider market. Remember, in Star Wars the knowledge of how to use shields against projectile weapons is there, they just think it isn't worth the hassle to modify any shield generator to combat them. That's how uncommon such weapons are. If this should change, the galaxy will be grumpy about it but modify their shields and your projectile weapon losses is the edge against more traditional weapons.

In the later eras, at least. I don't know if that is the case in the Republic or if most pirates operated a light freighter converted into a Gunship that could also move the goods it takes.

When were Cloakshapes a thing again?
Apparently they already exist and would likely be one of the competitors of my half baked future planet defense fighter.
Currently, most pirates use modified light freighters and gunboats. But some begin to shift to fighters.

The Cloakshape is on the market but not liked by most people. There hasn't been a large purchase by anyone aside the Jedi Order.

Worse, missiles are variably portrayed. The X-Wing series has a squadron being a credible threat to capital ships (perhaps unsurprisingly) while other times they damage small craft and kill fighters.
Given the fact that the galaxy hasn't seen a wide conflict, most people will dismiss the idea that fighters can be a threat to an armed warship. No danger at all, remember, until now no nine-year-old-freshly-freed-slave-boy has done anything above Naboo.

Good to know that progress overflow likely won't be a complete waste of budget. If that's the case, it seems it'll be better to focus on fewer actions each turn to ensure 1-turn success and maybe gain overflow benefits, rather than spreading budget around on a whole bunch of 50/50 chance actions that might need another turn of budget dice to finish.
It depends on what you want to achieve. If you wish or must finish a project fast it is better to dump more dice at it. If you've something that is a long-term project you can take your time. Basicly it allows players to priority what you wish to do.

[ ][Design][4B] A Courier
Progress: 129 of 150
Requires: The Parcelmasters' Dream
Description: To build a fast ship will be some hard work, but it can be done. And then the whole sector will see your ships covered in the logo of the FDP. Free advertisement at its finest, especially if your ship can beat the competition.

"... and that is why there is a sign saying: no food delivery from dirtside." Gaarth leant back in the chair before your desk. The old Mon Cal still looked annoyed, and you could understand it. A good eighth of the large Budget he had asked for when you tasked him with developing the courier for the FDP had been wasted. And for what? So that a bunch of fresh-out-of-university designers could order food from Temaris to be delivered via shuttle. That was costly and unnecessary as the station they were working on had a small commercial area with several restaurants, caf-shops, and fast food places.

"I hope that doesn't happen again, Gaarth."

The face of the man grew dark, and he narrowed his fish-like eyes dangerously. "Don't worry, it won't happen again. I set those idiots straight when I found out about it. I had to fire a few and ask Legal to take action against them, but now my Department runs like a well-oiled machine. I put the fear of Hutts into them, so to speak."

"Good," you said and made a note to ask accounting to take a closer look into the design department's spending if they weren't doing it already. That had been a concerning thing to hear, especially with money being so tight. Luckily, Gaarth had found out about it before it became a real problem. "Continuing, how is the design coming along?"

"Slowly, if compared to the amount of the Budget I have sunken into it. For a new team? Not bad, I suppose. They do their best but are inexperienced. I have to remind them often what we are trying to build here. They have a tendency to try and put everything into the craft and not prioritize what is needed to reach the goal. I'm tired, too many extra hours because of them. And have started to get depressed because I often have to say no." Gaarth paused and sighed heavily. "Overall, we've narrowed it down to two designs at the moment. They will soon be ready to be presented."

"Great to hear. Well, I don't want to waste any more time, Gaarth. See you at the next meeting."

"Any time, Wrex."

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Hyperdrives
Progress: 50 of 50
Description: Currently the Company hasn't the knowledge or the facilities to produce something like a hyperdrive themselves. That means you need offers from other companies that do build hyperdrives.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Sublight Engines
Progress: 50 of 50
Description: Any ship requires some form of sublight engine. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something of your own, but until that is the case, you will need to buy somewhere else.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Plating
Progress: 37 of 25
Description: It shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to produce hull plates that your ships require.

Thor was rather excited when he stormed into your bureau with the force of a starving Hutt who caught the scent of a buffet. He was chittering along in his native tongue the whole time, and you couldn't understand a single word. You could only watch helplessly as he wandered around the room, waving his datapad around and talking with no one besides himself. Finally, his protocol droid managed to catch up with him, looking somewhat exhausted, if that was even possible for a droid.

"Ah, apologies for my delayed arrival, Master Wrex. But my motors weren't made for such fast traveling," the droid lamented when it rolled into your bureau. Only to stop himself and hold up its arms in horror as its receptors fell onto its Master, who was still raging about something in his own language. Thor was standing on your visitor's couch, using it as some sort of platform as he explained something to you – which you still didn't understand. "Oh no, Master Thor! Without me, Master Wrex can't understand you. That is why he isn't happier about the great bargain you've made! How do you expect people to understand you without me around? You can't speak basic, Master!"

At that, you raised your eyebrows and looked between Thor and his droid. "Bargain? What great bargain are you talking about, droid?"

"Ah, my apologies, Master Wrex, but my Master is proud of the bargains he had struck for the Company. He has secured a combined offer for both hyperspace and sublight drives from Slayn & Korpil. Apparently, he heard about it from an old acquaintance who knows someone at that manufacturer who then pointed my Master towards them. He just saved our Company a large sum of money and all that simply for his signed Grand-Master-Yoda trading holo card, which he has twelve of since he found out how to … Master Thor! That is illegal! You can't simply forge the digital security markings of the Jedi-Trading-Card League! Didn't you think about the consequences?"

The diminutive Jawa stopped and glared at the droid. He then mumbled something that you didn't need a translation for. Apparently, Thor wasn't interested in legal advice from his protocol droid. Going by the gasping coming from said droid, whatever Thor had articulated wasn't something that shouldn't be used around children. Before this could get out of hand even more, you stopped the droid from speaking with a raised finger.

"Right, I don't want to hear anything about potential copyright infringements Thor might or might not have been part of. All I care for is the deal. Is it truly that good?"

Thor shifted his gaze towards you and made a small speech. He gave his droid a kick and offered you his pad. "My Master assures you that it is truly that good. If you would take a look at the datapad? You will find all the details on it."

You took it from his furry hands and looked at the screen. It didn't take long to skim through it. When you finally looked up towards Thor's diminutive figure, you could only imagine the smug look he must have had below his hood. You cleared your voice and pointed towards the pad. "Has Legal had a look at this? No hidden paragraphs? Nothing we could trip over?"

"Yes, Master Wrex. It was one of the first things my Master did when he had the chance to. Even before he came to you. I might add that he perhaps implied towards the legal team that he was working with your authority backing him up. He would be more than thankful if you could reinforce this statement of his."

You nodded. A grin so broad that it felt as if it would split your skull formed on your face . "Sure, whatever it takes, Thor, you old pirate! Of course you have my backing in this! What a deal you made."

Why currently Railguns aren't used in Star Wars - a Simple Explanation
The best example is the beloved Railgun that comes up after every second Update in the old threat.
Railguns in Star Wars are always bandied out by people that don't really understand why the technology used in ships is the way it is, Railguns are hilariously hard-hitting for their size, and you wanna know how that's an issue? Overpenetration. If you don't nail something important all you're doing is wasting ammo, and don't even get me started on the logistics of those slugs, because they're not something that you can just hop to a random gas giant and have a decent chance of finding, they have to be manufactured, the resources have to be refined and transported and you have a significant reduction in combat endurance, because each of those slugs are going to be significantly larger than a single shot from a Turbolaser would be, even accounting for the necessary equipment to store the gas, (Assuming that it's just stored under 'normal' pressure and not as a Metallic Gas like Hydrogen can be.)

The only reasons a ship should have a railgun are A) You don't have the technology for Energy Weapons, B) Your Energy Weapons are Shit, or C) You need the Extreme Range. Assuming that literally everyone in the SW Galaxy is stupid but the MC is not fun, Railguns as a weapon of Space Combat has been put through its paces and has been demonstrated to not meet the requirements of the Galactic Military, for whatever range of reasons.

There is a reason why the only ship in the 'modern' era that has the option to use Railguns is the Onager, which is an Imperial planetary siege vessel, not a mainline battleship. And, BTW, it's the same vessel that can mount super-lasers and Particle Cannons. So it's not the most efficient design.

Sorry about that, I used to be one of those 'But Why Not Railgun' people, and it makes me angry when people don't do their research to try and make their MC seem like such a genius.

You're missing one other important piece on the overpenetration thing: Newton doesn't stop caring about objects sent flying even if we do. What happens when you've launched a good-sized chunk of mass at "sufficient velocity" in space is that it doesn't stop until it hits something.

If you're lucky? That's a star or a gas giant.

If you're not? Horrific civilian mass casualty event. In space, a mass driver can be literally a weapon of mass destruction, indiscriminately causing damage far beyond the battlefield.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Yavin Convention outlawed them, come to think of it.
