Well, I don't recall Star Wars ever having had anyone make so-called generation ships; the closest thing would have been Outbound Flight, but that was more of a long-term exploration vessel, rather than a ship intended to serve as a home to a populace for, well, generations or in perpetuity.
I am... Not entirely sure about that but I'll concede it on the grounds of not remembering a concrete example. More pertinent to the task at hand, such a thing doesn't exist because travel has been faster than light for archeological periods.

Wiki walked a bit from there, and came across a few relevant nuggets. The big one being that hyperdrives were originally invented by the Rakata, but theirs were Force-enabled and could only be operated by force-sensitives. At some unspecified point, the Duros and the Corellians independently reverse-engineered a purely technological "true" hyperdrive, without fully understanding the theoretical principles of the technology. And despite tens of thousands of years, the theoretical underpinning of why and how hyperspace and hyperdrives even work the way they do remains in dispute between different academic camps. The only major change that has happened since true hyperdrives were invented is the invention of navicomputers small enough to fit on starships, allowing ships to enter hyperspace on their own at mostly arbitrary points, instead of relying on downloading the necessary hyperspace navigation data from Hyperspace Beacons in open space (away from gravity wells) that would do the huge amount of math that ships couldn't handle on their own prior to navicomputers.

So yeah. Apparently developing a better hyperdrive is just really careful iteration in a very stagnant technology base.

...I had kinda been assuming most people here knew that a lot of technology in star wars is like this. but yeah droids, blasters, and hyperdrives are all reverse engineered technology that nobody really understands.

No they do understand their technology. This isn't 40k or Battletech where they have no idea what they are doing. The star wars galaxy fully understands their technology base to the point they have developed it to a mature point.

No it isn't stagnant. Like I said above they understand it they have just advanced it so much it is mature and hit a plateau. Why do you think the hyperdrive rating is a thing. Each of those is an advancement in the tech. Class 2 is the current military standard with anything faster either being very expensive, unique/limited, experimental, or black market mods that are unreliable.

What I really meant by "stagnant" is that differences in hyperdrive rating are not a fundamental change in how the problem of hyperspace FTL is approached. It represents an improvement, but not a revolutionary improvement like propeller engines vs jet engines in atmospheric flight. And this fundamental approach has been the same for over twenty thousand years, with literally the only major paradigm shifts being: navicomputers (an auxiliary system, not the hyperdrive itself, made during the Mandalorian Wars ~4000 years ago) and interdiction fields (originally just multiple really powerful tractor beams, also produced during the Mandalorian Wars, and later artificial gravity generators invented by the Galactic Empire a few decades after the current point in the quest). A technology that "matures" and hits a plateau is still stagnant, even if there's nothing that can realistically done about the stagnation.

Ehh... honestly I doubt it's worth the effort. We'd effectively be sponsoring a single racer, or maybe a racing team. There's prize money in it, that we might negotiate a cut of (assuming the prize money isn't just pocket change for a shipyard company). Mostly it would be an advertising ploy that might not even be worth the effort invested, given the popularity of the sport is fading. Racing teams are not really a target market which we can sell a huge amount of our products to. We'd have to design a hyper-specialised product that has to focus on speed (and potentially durability) to the exclusion of everything else including cheap production cost, and we'd only sell a small handful of these.

EDIT: That's not to say the idea isn't interesting to play with... but I don't think it fits well enough to shoehorn into this quest. Could merit a quest of its own, though.

Opening 3
[ ][Design][4B] A Courier
Progress: 129 of 150
Requires: The Parcelmasters' Dream
Description: To build a fast ship will be some hard work, but it can be done. And then the whole sector will see your ships covered in the logo of the FDP. Free advertisement at its finest, especially if your ship can beat the competition.

"... and that is why there is a sign saying: no food delivery from dirtside." Gaarth leant back in the chair before your desk. The old Mon Cal still looked annoyed, and you could understand it. A good eighth of the large Budget he had asked for when you tasked him with developing the courier for the FDP had been wasted. And for what? So that a bunch of fresh-out-of-university designers could order food from Temaris to be delivered via shuttle. That was costly and unnecessary as the station they were working on had a small commercial area with several restaurants, caf-shops, and fast food places.

"I hope that doesn't happen again, Gaarth."

The face of the man grew dark, and he narrowed his fish-like eyes dangerously. "Don't worry, it won't happen again. I set those idiots straight when I found out about it. I had to fire a few and ask Legal to take action against them, but now my Department runs like a well-oiled machine. I put the fear of Hutts into them, so to speak."

"Good," you said and made a note to ask accounting to take a closer look into the design department's spending if they weren't doing it already. That had been a concerning thing to hear, especially with money being so tight. Luckily, Gaarth had found out about it before it became a real problem. "Continuing, how is the design coming along?"

"Slowly, if compared to the amount of the Budget I have sunken into it. For a new team? Not bad, I suppose. They do their best but are inexperienced. I have to remind them often what we are trying to build here. They have a tendency to try and put everything into the craft and not prioritize what is needed to reach the goal. I'm tired, too many extra hours because of them. And have started to get depressed because I often have to say no." Gaarth paused and sighed heavily. "Overall, we've narrowed it down to two designs at the moment. They will soon be ready to be presented."

"Great to hear. Well, I don't want to waste any more time, Gaarth. See you at the next meeting."

"Any time, Wrex."

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Hyperdrives
Progress: 50 of 50
Description: Currently the Company hasn't the knowledge or the facilities to produce something like a hyperdrive themselves. That means you need offers from other companies that do build hyperdrives.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Sublight Engines
Progress: 50 of 50
Description: Any ship requires some form of sublight engine. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something of your own, but until that is the case, you will need to buy somewhere else.

[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Plating
Progress: 37 of 25
Description: It shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to produce hull plates that your ships require.

Thor was rather excited when he stormed into your bureau with the force of a starving Hutt who caught the scent of a buffet. He was chittering along in his native tongue the whole time, and you couldn't understand a single word. You could only watch helplessly as he wandered around the room, waving his datapad around and talking with no one besides himself. Finally, his protocol droid managed to catch up with him, looking somewhat exhausted, if that was even possible for a droid.

"Ah, apologies for my delayed arrival, Master Wrex. But my motors weren't made for such fast traveling," the droid lamented when it rolled into your bureau. Only to stop himself and hold up its arms in horror as its receptors fell onto its Master, who was still raging about something in his own language. Thor was standing on your visitor's couch, using it as some sort of platform as he explained something to you – which you still didn't understand. "Oh no, Master Thor! Without me, Master Wrex can't understand you. That is why he isn't happier about the great bargain you've made! How do you expect people to understand you without me around? You can't speak basic, Master!"

At that, you raised your eyebrows and looked between Thor and his droid. "Bargain? What great bargain are you talking about, droid?"

"Ah, my apologies, Master Wrex, but my Master is proud of the bargains he had struck for the Company. He has secured a combined offer for both hyperspace and sublight drives from Slayn & Korpil. Apparently, he heard about it from an old acquaintance who knows someone at that manufacturer who then pointed my Master towards them. He just saved our Company a large sum of money and all that simply for his signed Grand-Master-Yoda trading holo card, which he has twelve of since he found out how to … Master Thor! That is illegal! You can't simply forge the digital security markings of the Jedi-Trading-Card League! Didn't you think about the consequences?"

The diminutive Jawa stopped and glared at the droid. He then mumbled something that you didn't need a translation for. Apparently, Thor wasn't interested in legal advice from his protocol droid. Going by the gasping coming from said droid, whatever Thor had articulated wasn't something that shouldn't be used around children. Before this could get out of hand even more, you stopped the droid from speaking with a raised finger.

"Right, I don't want to hear anything about potential copyright infringements Thor might or might not have been part of. All I care for is the deal. Is it truly that good?"

Thor shifted his gaze towards you and made a small speech. He gave his droid a kick and offered you his pad. "My Master assures you that it is truly that good. If you would take a look at the datapad? You will find all the details on it."

You took it from his furry hands and looked at the screen. It didn't take long to skim through it. When you finally looked up towards Thor's diminutive figure, you could only imagine the smug look he must have had below his hood. You cleared your voice and pointed towards the pad. "Has Legal had a look at this? No hidden paragraphs? Nothing we could trip over?"

"Yes, Master Wrex. It was one of the first things my Master did when he had the chance to. Even before he came to you. I might add that he perhaps implied towards the legal team that he was working with your authority backing him up. He would be more than thankful if you could reinforce this statement of his."

You nodded. A grin so broad that it felt as if it would split your skull formed on your face . "Sure, whatever it takes, Thor, you old pirate! Of course you have my backing in this! What a deal you made."
