When you walk into your father's office, you notice he wasn't there. Risa, the Nautolan head of Marketing, was there. She sat in your preferred chair before your father's desk. She was lazily drinking what you recognize quickly as Mon Cala Deep Sea Wine - something toxic for most humanoids. When Risa heard you entering your father's office, she looked up from the pad she had read. Her lips split into a far too wide smile, showing her small, long, sharp teeth.
"Hello, Wrex," she greeted you with a teasing tone. "I heard you're a bit in a loop at the moment. Waiting for the FDP to come up with their minds. It must be frustrating."
"It is," you agree and step towards the small bar on the side of the office. Quickly filling a glass with Corellian Whisky, you moved over to Risa. Taking a seat next to her, you smile tiredly. "It is frustrating, but we can't really do anything."
"Poor Wrex," Risa continued to tease you. "But guess who has the testing committee's results?"
It took a moment for your brain to understand what she was saying fully. Then your eyes went wide, and you stared at her.
"You don't …"
"Oh, yes, I do," Risa said, leaning back. Pulling up her pad, she motions for you to get yours out. For a moment, you fumble with your datapad, then you hold it up, and she sends you a package. "T'shir still owed me a favor. Tomorrow, they will officially tell the public whose ship they take. There isn't anything about that in the information, but I think you can read well enough between the lines. Go on, take a look."
| Compartment | Speed | Maneuverability | Weapons | Special Compartment | Cost | Comment of the test committee |
Aurek-Design | Pass | Pass | Failed | Pass | Failed | Failed | It has a basic and functional design. Its strength lies with its engines. Weapons and protective abilities are below expectations. |
YT-1000 | Failed | Pass | Pass | Pass | Pass | Pass | A design that, in its basic configuration, is a solid ship but not good a freighter. It is highly recommended to be modified according to company needs. |
Barloz-class | Pass | Failed | Failed | Pass | Failed | Pass | A design that begins to be outdated. The cargo capacity far exceeds what is needed, its protective measures are below what is recommended. The engines are also insufficient. Only the fact that replacement parts are easily purchased can be counted as a plus. |
You groan as you read and re-read the information about the three ships. Your design made it second place, with the Barloz behind and the YT-1000 being the clear winner. If this was true, then you already knew what the decision of the Fast Delivery Parcel Service would be. After reading through the information for the fourth time, trying desperately to look for any sign that the committee might recommend the
Aurek design, you put down the pad and looked to Risa. The Nautolan woman had cleared half her glass of Mon Cala wine and smiled at you.
"Sith-spit."
Risa giggled as she put her glass down. "You're cute when you're frustrated, you know."
"This isn't time to joke around, Risa! We're dead," you say, angry. "If the
Aurek falls short, we don't get enough Credits and—" You stop yourself, realizing that you almost had told her that the Company was as good as belly up if you failed—something your father still kept extremely close to his chest.
"And when I lose the opportunity to design ships, which is bad," you finished rather lamely. For a moment, she looked at you expectantly, clearly waiting for you to continue, but then she snorted and took another sip from her glass.
"Right," Risa chuckled and swallowed the rest of the wine. "Lucky for you, I'm the head of Marketing. Let me worry about selling your little toys. I'm sure I can come up with something should the FDP not take it."
"Yeah, that sounds like a good Plan Besh," you say weakly, glad you didn't spill the beans about the company's financial situation. It had become clear that Risa had no idea how dire things were. The door's opening saved you from putting your foot even more into your mouth as your father entered.
"Ah, the two of you are already here. Good," he said and walked over to the bar. To your surprise, he didn't take his usual glass of Corellian Whisky but a mug and filled it with caf. "Risa, dear, you gave Wrex the information already?"
"She did, and it looks like CEC will make the race."
Your father nodded gravely. "Yes, we need to plan how to handle this. Risa is already thinking about a marketing campaign for buyers within the sector. But I thought I would ask for your opinion, Wrex. It is your baby, after all."
"Well, we haven't started production yet," you start slowly and take a sip from the whisky in your hand. "On the other hand, we have already spent a significant amount of Credits in the
Aurek, so if we don't get even, we will lose money. The real problem is that we designed the ship, especially around what the FDP set up as demands. And it has its flaws, as you well know, Dad."
"Is there Anything I need to know?" Risa asked with concern in her voice. Her eyes wander from your father to you and back.
"No, nothing that isn't documented. You shouldn't tell customers it's the next big thing that will break the market," you said with a head shake.
"Okay, I will have my people read through the documentation again, both what we got from your departments and what the FDP leak says. And you're forbidden to give a design a name like—ever again." Risa stops herself and then smiles. "That is if we will build it. Sorry, I didn't intend to interrupt you, Wrex. You were about to give us your recommendation. Should we build it?"
[ ] Recommend to build the
Aurek-Design

"... and then it can turn into a battle walker!"
You step unnoticed into the Design department. They had gathered around a holoprojector in the middle of the room. Above it, you see a design of something that transforms itself into a bipedal figure that started to shoot blasters on its arms. Before the holoprojector stood Gaath, who hid his face behind his large hands.
"Uh!" One of the watching crowd of designers suddenly jumps up. "What if we give it in this form a jetpack? Then it can fly."
It's with morbid curiosity that you watch the whole room of designers start chatting excitedly about the suggestion. Your eyes wander to Gaath, who has begun rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet, apparently to try and calm himself down. You ask yourself how long it would take until the old Mon Calamari started to choke someone in the gathered crowd and why they were all so oblivious to the danger they were in.
"How about speakers!"
"Why would it need speakers?"
"For the theme song, of course!"
"A UTILITY CRAFT," Gaath's roar cuts through the chatter of the others. His raspy voice is breaking, almost as if his waves of anger are finally set free. "We were asked to design a Utility Craft that can be used for many things in and around space docks, stations and large ships! Not a fucking transforming ground attack walker that shoots blasters and plays its own Sith-damnd theme song!"
Silence falls in the room as they all stare at the Mon Cala, who rotates his eyes to look at each of them. Then he stomps his foot on the ground.
"Back to your desks!" They all scramble like mouse droids that face heavy traffic in a corridor. "And the next one who can't design a proper utility craft will be sent down to the Production department to install freshers in the next design!"
You silently walked out again, suddenly no longer needing to talk with Gaath about the Utility Craft. It seemed the design still needed the kinks worked out before you could take a proper look at it. This had nothing to do with Gaath's angry scolding, which you could still hear after the door had closed.
Yet you couldn't help but feel as if the utility craft's hologram hadn't looked that far from being complete until that whole nonsense of the transformation to a combat walker came into play.
But that made you think about Rouge Moon Subsidiary Weapon Company. Currently, they are only building the Blaster Canon Mk. I. But maybe they could expend a bit and produce actual military equipment. For example, walkers! Given that, it's been a long time since anyone came up with a combat walker, there were enough historical examples for you to know that it was at least feasible.
[ ] Ask RMSWC to look into walker designs. (-1 Budget / 1 Turn)
[ ] Don't ask.
Plans for a Utility Craft Progress: 45 of 50!
You were reviewing some budget reports when Dhin Nerroma walked into your office. Her fur was slightly rumbled and stood up. From what you had learned about Bothan's, that wasn't a good sign. Usually, it meant that the Bothan, whose fur stood up, was either angry or extremely upset. The happy grin she showed the world contradicted this as she plopped down before your desk.
"Dhin," you greeted her with a slight nod of acknowledgment. "How are you?"
The last time you saw her and learned the thing about Bothan fur, she had been quiet. Apparently, designing a shield transmitter from the ground up was easier said than done. A number of failures had made her less than friendly.
"Oh, I'm fine," she said, still grinning. Something here was wrong, or you missed something. You just weren't sure and suddenly felt on edge.
"And what brings you to my office?"
"Progress!" Right after she had yelled the word, she started to giggle and almost bounced in her seat. Basically, she thrust her datapad at you as she started to speak fast. "We finally managed to get a shield transmitter to work! We got a shield bubble that could be maintained for five seconds."
"Oh," was all you could say as you decoded her words. "
Oh!"
You could feel a grin start to spread on your lips. That was a huge progress.
"Stable?"
"Yes," Dhin nodded enthusiastically. "For the whole time span! Not even one outliner on the energy curve! Then it collapsed violently and fried half the computers in my department, sadly. But for five seconds, we had a glorious, stable shield field that worked. Now, we only need to increase the time it stays stable and stop the violent collapse of the energy field."

New Research available: Basic Ion Canon!
Total Budget: 8 - 2 (for 1 Turns) = 6!
Design Department
[ ][Design][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.
[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Light Freighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Light Freighters come in all shapes and forms. Some fast, others with a great range, and so on. It is time to design your own.
[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Heavy Freighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Heavy Freighters are the backbone of interstellar trading. They are, in theory, easy to build. You've never built one, just repaired them, so you don't know for sure.
[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Utility Craft
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: In the orbital industry, not only in shipbuilding, small craft are used every day. They are called Utility Craft, and there never seems to be enough despite how many models are on the market.
[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Corvette
Progress: 0 of 150
Description: Corvettes are used by every military in the galaxy to some extent. The market is hard fought over by such names as Kuat Drive Yards and CEC. Entering this arena will be risky, but the profits…
[ ][Design][1B] Plans for a Fighter
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: The new lovechild from the Deep Core to the Mid Rim if it comes to "new" and "hip" military "geniuses." The market hasn't been cornered yet. Maybe you can corner a bit of it.
Research Department
[ ][Research][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.
[ ][Research][1B] Class 5 Hyperdrive
Progress: 0 of 500
Description: A Class 5 Hyperdrive is the slowest drive seen on the market, often built-in as an emergency drive should the main one fail. If we want to start building our own hyperdrives, Class 5 is our entry point.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Sublight Engines
Progress: 0 of 250
Description: Every starship needs sublight engines for travel outside hyperspace. We should start learning how to build basic ones ourselves before we go for larger and better sublight engines.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Hull Plating
Progress: 0 of 100
Description: Most people in the galaxy won't give two thoughts about the hull plates that protect them from the void through which they travel. But the truth is, it is hard to come up with the right mixture of metals and other materials to make these plates. We should start with something basic.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Shielding
Progress: 59 of 200
Description: Most weapons used in the galaxy are either blaster or laser-based. Accordingly, any ship manufacturer worth his name will provide basic protection against these. In theory, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with one ourselves.
[ ][Research][1B] Blaster Canon Mk.II
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: The Mk.I has been a great start, but it has many weaknesses and served more as a way for Dhin's team to test the waters. It is time to develop something genuinely useable in the broader market.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Autoblaster
Progress: 50 of 200
Description: Doing the development of the Blaster Canon Mk.I Dhin's team created a crude autoblaster by accident. These weapons fire weaker blaster bolts, but a lot of them in a short time. A good weapon for close combat against weakly armored targets.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Laser
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: Most military ships use lasers, thanks to their ability to fight at longer distances. If we wish to push into the military market, we should first develop basic laser weapons.
[ ][Research][1B] Basic Ion Canon
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: These days, Ion weaponry is seldom considered practical. But the rise of more war droids means that there might be a market to bring this old technology back.
Production Department
[ ][Production][1B] Upkeep
Progress: n.a.
Description: You pay the bills and assign working orders, generally ensuring that the department isn't losing brainpower. If this option is not taken, the cost will grow in the next turn.
[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Hyperdrives
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: Currently the company doesn't have the knowledge or the facilities to produce something like a hyperdrive themselves. That means you need offers from other companies that do build hyperdrives.
[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Sublight Engines
Progress: 0 of 50
Description: Any ship requires some form of sublight engine. It shouldn't be too hard to come up with something of your own, but until that is the case, you will need to buy somewhere else.
[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Plating
Progress: 0 of 25
Description: It shouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to produce hull plates that your ships require.
[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Shielding
Progress: 0 of 150
Description: Some of your designs require shields, not the navigational but actually protective ones. Even civilian variations cost a lot. Hopefully, there are some cheap offers.
[ ][Production][1B] Ask for Weapons
Progress: 0 of 200
Description: Weapons are restricted on most Republican worlds and not easily bought in bulk. Still, there are plenty of companies that offer ship-grade weapons. The absolute nightmare is the bureaucracy behind it.
