It would take way more than years to catch up with every piece of media that was made even earlier than that, and there's always something new made while you are catching up.

Everything old to you is new to somebody else.
Then we should never speak of anything because everything is a spoiler to someone.
I agree that it probably should be hidden, but the assumption that it would have been known to almost everyone interested is not unreasonable.

Not in a thread tagged "setting knowledge not required", no.

Looks like a classic 'agree to disagree'. And that would have the advantage for the derail to end.

@Rgal You should probably spoiler the text bit you quoted now that the original has been put in a spoiler bubble like you requested. :p

Or people could take five seconds to use [Spoiler](insert text here)[/spoiler] tags. EDIT: But yes, getting back on-topic would be nice.

The hell "agree to disagree" even means in this context? Either spoilers are acceptable, or not. If they are, people who would rather enjoy the original work themselves are unhappy when somebody spoils something. If they aren't, people who thoughtlessly post spoilers are unhappy when being told to think before they write.

Imagine if "agreeing to disagree" was a response to every conflict. "Can you stop torturing me to death maybe?" "I think that torturing you to death is good actually" "Looks like a classic 'agree to disagree'". See how so-called "impartial" bystanders opinion here benefits one side and not the other?

Yeah, if you don't have anything to say to support your opinion, here's my advice: don't say anything. Do not try to shut up the opposing opinion with a half-hearted bothsideing.

Good point. Edited.

In other news, I've been looking at Blake fanart and black cat photos to possibly find an icon for the quest. Here are some of the runners-up:

Beta-read by @Nachtigall and @Nixeu.

Author's Note: There is a new poll regarding where people want skill/ability gains to be mentioned. (Also, please use spoiler tags when discussing canon FT spoilers! Or just, y'know, don't discuss them here at all since they won't really help you.)

The following morning, Blake stared out at the Burning Briars Guildhouse from the window and tried to figure out how to curse them. Vindictive? Yes. Petty? Blake would argue otherwise considering that some members were outright kidnapping people. Their misfortune could only be good for any victims.

Still, her intent-infused Black emissions didn't seem to accomplish their intended purpose and Blake shelved the project for later. She was confident that she could manage it sooner or later, albeit not from so far away. It felt like Black lost purpose the longer it was exposed to opposing colors; if she wanted to hit something from a distance, then she would need to embed the spell within a larger Black or Blue delivery mechanism.

(Ability Discovered: Curse [Rank 0])

Her first attempts at making such a Construct were nothing more than inert Black blobs–

"Is that a kitten?" Cinzia whispered in apparent awe.

–which were, unfortunately, concentrated enough to be visible to other people. Blake glanced up at Cinzia with raised eyebrows as the short-lived Construct disintegrated in her palm.

"No. Just an unstable bundle of magic."

Cinzia pouted prettily enough for Blake to suspect extensive practice or use. Not that the cat Faunus would throw any stones; when she was younger, Blake had been happy to knowingly exploit her own adorable appearance to gain new supporters for Faunus rights. After all, wouldn't only a demon do something to upset such a cute child?

"Darn. Are you at least trying to make a kitten?"

"No again," Blake repeated, but filed the idea away for later.

Cats were common enough for a Black cat to be easily overlooked, and useful enough for most people to avoid abusing them. Anyone attempting animal abuse would deserve having a spell blow up in their face even if they weren't Blake's original target.

(Ability Discovered: Black Mana Constructs [Rank 1])

Elda cycled Blake out of the easiest section after that first night, and—it wasn't completely awful. There was an infinite increase in the number of people asking if she wanted to get to know them on her next day off, but they accepted her increasingly bland refusals with either laughter or good-natured melodramatics. Only a single party of two young men seemed intent on actually getting drunk so early in the morning, and they seemed perfectly content to entertain each other.

"Why'd I h've t' get married without you?" one eventually demanded, staring despondently at Blake.

Mostly entertain themselves, Blake mentally corrected herself. The Faunus crossed her arms and tried to convey how ludicrously unimpressed she was with him.

"I'm really not at all interested."

"Neither was I," the drunk cryptically mumbled, but bothered Blake no further.

Still, a few examples of the rude and entitled sporadically filtered in throughout each day and successfully reminded her why the service industry and customer service were viewed as such painful professions.

"Hurry up!"

I physically cannot go any faster without spilling your meal! Blake wanted to shout back.

Still, she kept her emotions and thoughts in check even if she couldn't force herself to feign a smile for them. Cinzia pulled Blake to an unused corner of the kitchen after that particular patron left.

"You can't let that sort of person get to you," the waitress said earnestly. "You're new here and a bit shy–" what. "–but I can tell that everyone else likes you well enough, and you're getting really good at noticing needs before they even need to call you over. Actually, does the cat stuff help with balance? Because–"

"Shouldn't we be working?" Blake interrupted, gesturing pointedly at the cooling bowls of stew waiting on a nearby counter.

"Aaah, sorry!"

Elda proved willing to teach Blake the basics of reading during mid-afternoon and evening lulls in activity. Time constraints prevented them from making too much progress, and her automatic translation mechanism proved to be somewhat baffling. It wouldn't entirely translate written script, but it would rearrange her perception of words so that they obeyed familiar sentence structure and grammatical rules. Blake honestly didn't understand why it couldn't manage a direct translation after doing all that — didn't it need to know what words meant in order to properly reposition them? So why not share what it knew?

Matters became even more confusing by her third day of tutoring. Blake had managed to memorize numbers and a few words by then, and that was when it began replacing the alien script with more familiar symbols—but only for the parts she could already recall with relative reliability. In other words, it began translating when she no longer needed its help. At least she was able to learn how to read road signs, addresses, and listed prices…

Blake would admit that she wasn't the most patient of individuals. She sidestepped, glared, and tamped down fury the first time someone reached toward her thigh. Seriously, fuck any culture in which people thought that was acceptable. She might have left it at that had the man not deliberately leered at her and opened his mouth to spew something that she just knew would make her feel slimy.

She deliberately tuned out his cat-based innuendo and focused on letting just a little Black loose. She didn't want to hurt him—okay, that was a lie, she did. But she would settle for a little terror. Was killing intent one of the concepts from fiction that was actually based on real life? Because she really hated people like him, and she honestly wouldn't mind if he assumed she wanted to engage in recreational murder. It wasn't like she actually would.

Blake surfaced to find the man pale-faced and the rest of the room unaffected. Perfect.

"Hands and words to yourself, please," Blake said vindictively, and moved on with her day.

Should she have done it? Probably not. But her new ability would be marvelous for discouraging anyone who crossed the line.

(Ability Discovered: Menace [Rank 1])

…Or some of them, anyway. Sheer volume discouraged Blake from Menacing all but the worst offenders; it seemed as though most of them just didn't understand that their words and actions could be anything but complimentary. There was seldom any malice, and many made an effort to cut back when Blake asked them to. It was clear that they thought what amounted to sexual harassment was normal, or that Blake would somehow change her mind about appreciating it if they found the right wording.

"Seriously, you need to relax. I'm just being friendly."

Your genuine belief is the only reason I haven't Menaced you yet. Blake's nostrils flared as she tried to find some way to get through to the disgruntled man before her. Cinzia had recommended just ignoring them or fetching Elda. Ignoring them was difficult for Blake when she wasn't used to spending so much time interacting with people. Elda seemed to think that brief touches either weren't worth intervening over, or would provide an essential skill for the real world—specifically, the ability to ignore discomfort and take it in stride. Blake hated that the innkeeper was almost right. It was getting easier to temporarily ignore the internalized misogyny even if Blake found herself furiously scrubbing away the crawling on her skin every evening.

"If you wouldn't do it to your daughter or a sibling, then please don't do it to me," Blake finally managed, and headed to the kitchens before he could reply.

The offenders weren't anywhere near a majority, and didn't alter her plans for the amount of time Blake planned to spend at Elda's inn. It did, however, make her wonder if she should blame dated beliefs, or if Remnant's service industry would be approximately as awful. There were more anti-harassment media campaigns to consider, certainly, but Blake knew very well that employees were often considered expendable when compared to regular customers. Conditions would probably be even worse if those employees happened to be Faunus; there were far more Faunus seeking employment than there were locations willing to employ them. The power imbalance would certainly explain why so many restaurant, bar, and hotel employees were willing to pass on information to the White Fang.

At least the worst harassers provided plenty of opportunities for Blake to practice using killing intent Menace with minimal mana expenditure or collateral damage, and while performing other tasks. It truly did make for marvelous stress relief. She did try to be fairly conservative with her usage, though; not only did it arguably jeopardize Blake's continued employment, but the lack of significant mana impressions from multiple Guild-marked Wizards made it clear that Blake's senses weren't a very reliable method for identifying Wizards. She did notice that high physical fitness and a mana signature of any size generally indicated a Wizard's presence, though.

(Ability Improved: Menace [Rank 1 → 5])

Over the course of the week, Blake learned how to "see" lower concentrations of mana rather than to just sense its presence and general direction. She was also getting far better at identifying the distance and direction of a specific mana signature with respect to herself. It wasn't a skill she could use continuously for everything within her range, but she was certainly getting better at noticing when someone was approaching from outside her field of view.

(Ability Improved: Mana Sense [Rank 3 → 5])

She also gradually gained awareness of a White and Red aura across the entire inn. She honestly had no idea if it was a deliberate magical effect or if it just was. Either way, it felt like safety and comfort.

That impression was rather heavily strained on her sixth morning, when a Wizard moved from hitting on her to hitting her with Blue. If she hadn't been using him for tracking practice, she wouldn't even have noticed the incoming bundle of Blue before it connected and faded into the background. The resulting hit to her Aura was actually comforting: she could feel it absorbing the brunt of the spell, which meant it did work as a defense against at least some magics. Not a perfect defense, mind, but she was positive the effect had been weakened.

She was barely able to take two steps toward the front of the inn and Elda when there was a crash and splintering of wood.

"Oi, don't you fuckin' dare–"

Blake spun around to see a Red Wizard hauling her barely-Blue attacker out from the ruined remains of a table and looking toward her. She felt the completely irrational urge to take the attacker's side and promptly rejected that thought with the rest of her being. That was obviously the spell talking.

"Hey, could you hold up a minute?" the Wizard asked, then paused and looked in the general direction of the rest of his audience. "Actually, could someone else make sure Blake is okay? This bastard just hit–"

Blake's attacker released a burst of Blue only for the other Wizard to absentmindedly slam one knee between his legs. A choked shriek escaped the lowlife as he tried to curl in on himself.

"–her with a spell. The glyph looked like something mental," he finished.

Bystander syndrome had the rest of the audience do nothing more than look at Blake in the seconds before she withdrew a seat and sat down.

"I'll be fine in a bit," Blake said dismissively, still more relieved to discover her Aura's protection than upset by the attack. "I think it's something related to trust or confidence in the caster. I appreciate you handling it."

"Any time!" the Red Wizard replied cheerfully, and dragged the caster toward the front of the inn. Elda intercepted him before he even managed to exit the divide, enchanted cudgel in hand.

With that handled, Blake tuned out her surroundings and tried to focus on the discreet web of Blue still doing its utmost to influence her. She didn't want to tear it away with Black — who knew what horrible things would happen if the two effects merged? — and that left trying to tug it away with her minimal control over Blue.

And by "control" she meant "I have no idea what I'm doing." Both metaphorical and physical fingers passed right through the dangling threads when she tried to pull away the phantom, and the Blue didn't even twitch when she tried to use the mental muscles that Black demanded. At least being in contact with the spell let her compare and confirm the presence of usable Blue within her own soul. She didn't have nearly as much as she did Black, but there was still enough to use if she could just figure out how.

(Personal Mana Production Determined: BBBU)

Blake surfaced and opened her eyes when someone shook her shoulder. Elda's concerned visage was the first thing the Faunus saw and she reflexively leaned back for the sake of personal space.

"Are you going to be alright?" the innkeeper asked, clearly concerned.

Blake nodded and shrugged off Elda's hand. Elda continued before Blake could relay the low remaining duration of the spell.

"You can have the rest of the day off. We'll talk later."

Well, Blake wasn't going to complain about the decreased workload or the chance to study a working Blue spell.

"Thank you," Blake whispered back, and hurried back to her room.

Blake wasn't able to remove the Blue spell of her own accord, although she did think she had a general idea of how that might be accomplished in the future. Black had default behaviors and responded to her will; meanwhile, Blue didn't seem to want to do anything if it wasn't first given specific instructions. Trying to determine how to program Blue with those instructions kept her occupied all the way until Elda's post-sundown arrival.

(Ability Discovered: Charm [Rank 0])

(Ability Discovered: Blue Mana Control [Rank 0])

"I really am sorry that someone tried to do that to you," the innkeeper apologized. "His hands were shattered as punishment; he won't be casting again for quite some time. I would say that this was enough and that you could leave early, but I'm worried they might be counting on you to try leaving after such an attempt. I'll leave it up to you; if you want to take tomorrow off as well, then I won't count it against you."

Blake was torn. On the one hand, Elda's contrition was useful and Blake would be glad to get away from needing to serve a statistically significant number of assholes. On the other, Elda really had been far kinder to Blake than was necessary. Emotions triumphed over selfish exploitation: if Blake took advantage of Elda's kindness and offered nothing in return, then she would be little better than those Blake had railed against her whole life.

"Maybe a half-day off?" Blake offered. "And with me helping during the busiest periods. I don't want to take advantage of you, but I have been wanting to study your iceroom and Magic Tools before I go. Nothing destructive, I just want to take a look."

Mostly the iceroom, really. Knowing how the cudgel and cleaner functioned wouldn't be very helpful without first gaining control over their respective colors. At least the iceroom might let her learn the basics of handling Blue.

"That sounds fine," Elda readily agreed, smiling slightly. "Do you want to become an Enchanter? It's a nice, safe profession in plenty of demand."

Artificer, Blake didn't correct her. Still, it was obvious that Elda would love it if the Faunus were to go into a non-combat field. Blake might as well humor the older woman.

"It does sound like a comfortable career," Blake said honestly. "I can't answer that question until I know more, though. Was that a yes?"

"For the iceroom and cleaner, certainly!" agreed Elda. "I'm afraid I need to keep the cudgel ready to use, though."

Forging a cloak out of Black wasn't nearly as easy as Blake had been hoping. Simply draping it across herself didn't work; she could almost grant Black a semi-solid form, but it wanted to seep into anything it touched. Contact with purposeless mana didn't seem to be as harmful for Blake as it was for everything else, although it did still leave her feeling cold and weak in the afflicted areas. However, the cold sensation often vanished within a minute whereas the weakness wouldn't vanish for well over ten times that long. The duration and magnitude of weakness increased at a linear rate depending on how much Black she'd been subjected to, and afflicted limbs even introduced localized aches when she used enough.

(Trait Identified: Black Resistance [Moderate?])

Black seemed to default to Wither if she didn't focus on making it do something else. However, active effort allowed effects that were polar opposites of Black's automatic default—namely, granting temporary strength instead of weakness. That strength came at a price, however: if she didn't force Black to only consume itself in the course of strengthening her, then it would use her own Aura as supplementary fuel. She guessed that it would eat her body's energy if Aura was completely exhausted.

(Ability Discovered & Improved: Dark Vigor [Rank 0 → 3])

Experimentation proved that she could have Black strengthen her and damage whatever she hit. In fact, Black seemed far better at improving her ability to inflict damage than it was at protecting her. Wither was one option, but so was the obvious: draining life with a touch and transferring the stolen vitality to herself. In fact, that seemed like it would be one of the easiest skills she could possibly train once she had access to life more expendable than decorative plants.

(Ability Discovered: Drain Life [Rank 1])

(Ability Improved: Wither [Rank 2 → 3])

Blake finally managed to forge her desired cloak of Black by trying something else. With practice, she could release a roughly omnidirectional wave of Withering Black mana from her body…

(Ability Discovered & Improved: Dark Pulse [Rank 0 → 3])

…And halting the movement of a larger Pulse would provide her with a her-shaped cloud of Black that she could subsequently condense, then fuel and center on herself via a soul-link. It still hemorrhaged mana and Blake estimated that she couldn't fuel it for more than two or three minutes without exhausting her supply of Black, but it seemed like it would be adept at discouraging grapple attempts for the duration.

(Ability Improved: Black Cloak [Rank 0 → 1])

(Ability Improved: Black Mana Constructs [Rank 1 → 2]

(Ability Improved: Black Mana Control [Rank 4 → 6])

Her last morning of work was little different from all the rest. She learned the written versions of a few more words under Elda's instruction, waited on tables, and finally figured out how to control Blue after examining the iceroom's primary Ice Lacrima. It seemed as though uncertainty was anathema to control over Blue; she had to have a specific structure in mind when she tried to call upon it. In this case, that structure was a spell to chill objects and air in a skull-sized area in front of where she collected the spell's Blue.

(Ability Improved: Blue Mana Control [Rank 0 → Rank 1])

(Ability Discovered & Improved: Cryokinesis [Rank 0 → Rank 1])

She didn't have half as much luck with her examination of the cudgel and cleaner; as far as her senses were concerned, they were just blobs of barely-contained Red and uncompromising White. What she wouldn't give for a zoom in function...

Either way, Elda discreetly delivered the promised items at the end of the day. The satchel and bedroll had clearly been used before, but they still looked to be in good condition and even had the faintest of mana impressions. Nothing so strong as to signify their own enchantments, but perhaps their construction materials had been slightly magical?

Items Acquired:
(9 silver spits, 6 silver pieces [78 silver piece equivalent])
(Messenger's satchel)
(Bedroll)
(2 days of perishable meals)

Blake went to bed content with a full stomach and fewer fears for the future than she'd felt in months.

Kitty, kitty, could not stay,
Kitty, kitty, now a stray!
Kitty, kitty, our own ray,
Kitty, kitty, fair and fey!
Kitty, kitty, let us play,
Kitty, kitty, make them pay!
Kitty, kitty, you should pray,
Kitty, kitty, have your say:
"Tell us, kitty, are they prey?"

Blake awoke with what felt like her composure and sanity stretched to their breaking points. An evolution of her Semblance that pushed her outside her home plane? Fine, Semblances were known to occasionally bend or break otherwise established laws of reality. Access to strange colored magics and an associated sense? Sure! Magic was a staple of the coming-of-age fantasy genre, and the different colors even seemed to match magics mentioned in ancient mythology.

Having potentially homicidal entities sing in her dreams, leave an open offer, and somehow ensure that she perfectly remembered their words? That was a bit much. Blake wasted several minutes blankly watching the wall and wondering if her life would ever stop editing its own definition of "normal." Couldn't she at least be allowed a break while she was sleeping? Was that too much to ask?

(Ability Acquired: Pray [Rank ???])

Blake just hoped the entities wouldn't be offended if she didn't grant an invitation. Doing so felt like a weapon of last resort—not because of any new instincts, but because the voices were seriously asking if other people were prey. She couldn't guarantee that summoning them was not itself an affirmative answer.

Oh, this is going to be good. Not for BB, obviously, but who is perfect?

(Ability Discovered: Charm [Rank 0])
Not what I would prefer for our first Blue ability, but the icebox will probably help with that.

(Ability Discovered & Improved: Cyrokinesis [Rank 0 → Rank 1])
Called it! Though shouldn't it be Cryokinesis?

(Ability Acquired: Pray [Rank ???])
I think we should let the squiddles sleep for now. They don't sound like very nice tangle buddies.

I'm guessing you're thinking of Eldrazi ("squiddles"), but seeing as the last verse is in black mana coloration my bet is on Demons. There's precedent for deals with them in MtG, and the Fairy Tail setting has its own as well.

I don't actually know anything about Eldrazi other then things that could be deduced from off-hand mentions in Ignition, but either way mysterious voices that tell us to chose a prey don't sound like ordinary friends.

Hmm well I'm sure we will find some pray for them eventually....its only matter of time. Besides I'm sure their wonderful!

I say your half right as their dose seem to be increased durability with more power but Erza is by no mean a good example that woman is a monster and everyone acknowledges that she is way more powerful then she has right to be for her age. The reason i consider the slayers to be more durable then the average mage is due to taking on some of the characteristics of the art beyond actually using the scales or dragon force. The two combined makes them a pain in the ass unless you exploit a Weakness they have.
Yeah, but Erza's not the only example of raw power roughly equating to durability. There's also August, Makarov, and pretty much everyone in the series. As raw power goes up, so does durability, you see this over and over again. You also see the inverse: low power, low durability. I'll admit, Slayers overall may have an edge in durability to some extent due to how their Magic works, and that element can affect that too (see: Gajeel). Second Gen Dragon Slayers, whose bodies aren't as majorly altered, do tend to be on the lower end of the durability spectrum as compared to First or Third Gens. But even amongst them, raw magical power seems to be the primary factor dictating how much of a punishment they can take.
Well the thing is that Erza is

Kinda half dragon/dragon slayer.

Her mother was a dragon when she gave birth to Erza.
I am aware. But, as far as I can tell, that isn't actually a direct factor in her durability, excepting that it may have increased her overall magical power. She has never displayed any related abilities, and
Her body was not a suitable vessel for Irene, while Wendy was. Which would see to me to indicate that, whatever changes Irene's body went through, Erza wasn't all that affected by her mother's species shift.
*Ominous dream sequence*
Well. That's um...concerning. Particularly:
Kitty, kitty, our own ray,
Which would seem to me to imply "ray of hope" or something of the like. So, basically, something is really happy to see us...and is probably a dark god of some sort.
I'm guessing you're thinking of Eldrazi ("squiddles"), but seeing as the last verse is in black mana coloration my bet is on Demons. There's precedent for deals with them in MtG, and the Fairy Tail setting has its own as well.
That almost makes sense. But, unless the war really is going south for them, I don't know why the demons would need saving right now. No, this feels more like something that's powerful enough to sense Blake's entry into the Plane and maybe even read her past from her memories, old enough or knowledge enough to recognize what she is (though that could also be the mind reading), and is somehow in need of something from her, likely worship or some other form of offering. Likely to gain freedom of some sort, given the "let us play" and the "our own ray" lines.

Huh, the week was way more productive than I thought it'd be. Looks like staying at the inn was the right choice.

(Ability Improved: Menace [Rank 1 → 5])

She's just standing there.... MENACINGLY. ゴゴゴゴゴ

Now, I know there are bound to be differences between the quests, but this has some interesting implications for Ignition.

Did Surya and Sylvester have similar issues, and Jade just skipped them because she more-or-less inherited Surya's spark?

That impression was rather heavily strained on her sixth morning, when a Wizard moved from hitting on her to hitting her with Blue. If she hadn't been using him for tracking practice, she wouldn't even have noticed the incoming bundle of Blue before it connected and faded into the background. The resulting hit to her Aura was actually comforting: she could feel it absorbing the brunt of the spell, which meant it did work as a defense against at least some magics. Not a perfect defense, mind, but she was positive the effect had been weakened.

Knowing Blake's Aura can partially resist mind control does much to ease my concerns about this region.

And again, I have to wonder if the same was true for Ignition. A barrier jacket gave resistance to mind control; does Aura too and Jade just never noticed?

(Trait Identified: Black Resistance [Moderate?])

As expected, Blake has Black resistance.

Since she's also a secondary Blue mage, it'll be interesting to see if she also has a minor Enhanced Learning trait. I'd say probably not, but if it's weak enough Blake might not notice with her current mana sense.

The Drain Life + Dark Vigor combo seems potent. Steal vitality with every hit, use it to heal yourself or empower your blows.

Yeah, probably some kind of demon, or a Dark God.

The name "Pray" and the the entities seeming aware of Blake's world-walking suggests a God, but she is near a country overrun by demons so either is possible. Or both — a Dark God granting her access to demon summoning, maybe.

I mean...there would probably be a God of Demons, wouldn't there? Beyond the ones Zeref made basically worshipping him, I mean. Admittedly, that might be Ankhseram's turf. It wouldn't be surprising, between his apocalyptic jackassery and the whole "High Priest summoned an archdemon" thing. But it could be a separate entity, too. And it would make a lot of sense for something like that to be rarely worshipped, and possibly imprisoned or barred from interacting with the world somehow. Unless, of course, someone frees it or invites it into the mortal world. Would certainly be in line with the genre.

I really want Blake to meet Mirajane now. It will help put into prespective just how dangerous...whatever the hell just talked to her in her dreams was.

Hopefully. I know there's going to be AU shananiganery and I hope it doesn't mean that Fairy Tail itself has had a roster change.
