. I don't think Nagisa really grasped the idea of magic existing until Kyuubey baited her, anyway. I could totally see her having learned lessons from Kyouko, though, given the manner of her wish.
Welll

Her story in Magireco elaborates on that a bit. So it isn't exactly... Correct.

New to the forums here, and decided to start being here by taking a stab at participating in this quest. Hope I'm not going against forum rules by posting in a thread/quest that hasn't seen activity in almost a week.

She winces subtly, "Yes, I recall. I…" She hesitates, "I know your reputation well. Your family's name reaches most places, at least to some degree. I hear your father has been doing exciting work in virtual reality, as of late."

I found this interesting, especially when combined with the fact Homura's father got her a copy of SAO (Soul Arts Online) earlier in the quest. Makes me think that perhaps he might be more involved there than we we initially thought. To that end, I'm going to try a blue truth or two.

Homura's father is the creator of SAO.

Homura's father is the inventor of the Nerve Gear.

Well that takes care of things I'm interested in from that post. On to things more recent, like the latest vote.

Welcome to the thread and forum! No worries, we don't have any necromancy rules here on SV, and a week isn't anywhere near enough to be a concern, even if we did. This quest does update weekly, after all.

Homura's father was involved in the creation of Soul Arts Online.

Homura's father is not the inventor of the Nerve Gear.

Edit: Votes Locked

Current Winning Vote (Vote Tally is Broken):

[X][Nagisa] Treat Nagisa with the care and respect you'd treat Kyouko's little sister. If Kyouko is willing to share her church with someone, that means a lot. Check to make sure Nagisa doesn't look injured or hungry. If Kyouko was looking after her, she might have made the effort to keep her fed as well. But since Kyouko isn't here tonight... Consider what options you have for food. Even if Kyouko forgot herself, she'd never forgive you for leaving a child hungry.
[X][Nagisa] "I'm a friend of Kyouko's, and if Kyouko said you could stay here, then it's fine. I trust her, so I'll trust someone she cares about. Though it does worry me that she'd leave you here on your own. I'll need to talk to her about that."
-[X] If applicable: No you don't think she's lying. Anyone who knows Kyouko knows better than to claim something like that if it wasn't true.
[X][Nagisa] "Have you seen anyone else here today? Another friend of mine was looking for Kyouko, and I think she might have tried to drop by."
[X][Nagisa] "I do feel like we might have met before, but I'm not sure when. I've spent a lot of time in the hospital until recently, so I wouldn't think we'd have much chance to meet."
[X][Nagisa] Deflect on any questions about magic if that comes up, unless Kyouko has already told her.

You nod, approaching a bow with the gesture, "I'd like that." Ruki looks at you crosswise, but mirrors you.

Nagisa seems a bit puzzled, but steps aside, pulling the door open wider and allows the pair of you to enter.

The room is as you last remember--more or less, at least. You'd cleaned this place up last time you recall being here, but it's run down again, of course. As usual, it is mostly filled by a few mattresses with sheets and pillows--Kyouko's idea of a guest space. There's a large cooler sitting against one wall, likely empty if Nagisa hasn't put anything inside. A desk with a battery-powered lamp, a Bible, and a notebook--by the colorful stickers, you'd assume Nagisa's--sits near the cooler. As you recall, one of the drawers is full of meal bars, jerky, and other such foods. You'd set up an electric stove before, when you'd gotten the power back on, but there's no such thing right now. One of the pews is rotated around to face the desk, and a couple of chairs have been brought in as well, resulting in a den of sorts.

You make your way over towards the den, Nagisa locking the door behind the three of you, and take a seat on the pew after she takes the desk's chair. Ruki sits besides you, craning her head around to look around the room.

You smile slightly for Nagisa, "Thank you for having us. I'm a friend of Kyouko's, and, if Kyouko said you can stay here, then it's fine. I trust here, so I'll trust someone she cares about."

She blinks a bit, casting her eyes down, "I am not sure I mean that much to her, but thank you for letting me stay. I don't want to go anywhere at night if I don't have to."

"That's good. I'd be concerned if you did, thought it does worry me that she'd leave you here on your own. I'll need to talk to her about that."

She jerks her gaze up at that, meeting your eyes frantically, "NO! Please, don't do that! This is the only place I can stay--" She seems to cut off mid-sentence, but says nothing more. You suspect home is not particularly safe for her, from what Kyouko told you before.

You grimace, more than a bit bothered by a non-Magical Girl being left alone like this. She'd be much better off if she contracted, you think--being trapped like she is, without access to her magic, is dangerous. She's more than capable of taking care of--

You jerk physically as your own thoughts catch up with you. As far as you know, Nagisa's not even a Potential--you have no way of knowing if she could take care of herself, and you know for a fact that contracting is almost always a bad idea, so why would you ever…?

You shake turn your focus away from your wandering thoughts, focusing on the present. Nagisa and Ruki are looking at you a bit oddly, not that that's new at this point; you simply ignore it and move on, "I'll need to give it some thought, but maybe we could find some middle ground. Some way to keep you safer here, at least."

Nagisa seems to relax at that, "I guess I'd be okay with something, as long as I can keep coming here."

You aren't sure you like it, still, but you aren't here to fight with Nagisa. You start to ask her about Nanoha, only for Nagisa to speak first, "We have met before. I'm sure of it, but I cannot place you."

You nod in turn, "I do feel like we might have met before, but I'm not sure when. I've spent a lot of time in the hospital until recently, so I wouldn't think we'd have much chance to meet."

She narrows her eyes slightly, looking at you closely, "…Maybe I've seen you there, once or twice. I know that's not it, though." She bites her lip, struggling to remember, "You…you were really into Magical Girl anime, weren't you? You always liked how every character had a part to play, and everything happened for a reason. You said it was like clockwork. I…I told you that I like--"

"The End. Because everything was cleaned up neatly, with just two words." A shiver goes up your spine as you speak those words. Neither of you should know these things. If you were close friends before the loops, maybe, but you know you were not. She is familiar, but you would recall an actual friend…especially one who you told that to.

In spite of that, though, you know Nagisa is someone precious.

A Bond has Transcended Time.

Witness the Rebirth of Death.

Nagisa seems shaken too, changing the subject suddenly, "You said you are friends with Kyouko. What was that built on? Cosplay?" She looks at your outfit pointedly. You roll with it.

"We--"

'They are Magical Girls, Miss Momoe.' Kyubey cuts you off mid-sentence, and you groan internally. It seems Nagisa IS a potential.

Nagisa leaps to her feet, searching the room for the source of the voice, and finding the Bunnycat sitting on the altar.
That devil has no right.
You put your gun away, unsure when you drew it, and relieved to see that Nagisa hasn't noticed.

Kyubey looks at you with that unchanging smile of his, 'Apologies if I startled you, Homura. I forget, sometimes."

You shake your head, "It's fine. You're interested in Nagisa."

He nods slightly, then focuses her attention back upon the girl, who seems stunned by his sudden appearance, 'If you become a Magical Girl, I can grant you a Wish. You could save your mother, if you want."

He's going for a more aggressive pitch, it seems--he expects her to fold quickly.
Noi.
Nagisa doesn't appear to have quite processed his words, instead just staring at him, "…Are…are you an angel?"

Looking at the pure white of his flesh, and the halo-like rings on his ears, you suddenly realize why he's seated at the altar.

He says nothing...not lying, but not denying it either. Letting her draw the obvious conclusion.

If you say nothing in turn, she will almost certainly contract, giving you a new ally. Kyubey will shift his evaluation of you, and be less likely to trouble you.
"Fuck you, bastard!"
"He's no angel. Just an alien." You call him out in spite of yourself, anger burning quietly, and he turns to look at you quietly. Unreadable, as always.

'As Homura says, I am not an angel in the sense you understand them, although I have been known as one. Nevertheless, if you have a prayer you wish granted, I can make it possible."

Nagisa looks unsure, but you think she's going to decline. Whether any devil actually exists, even Kyouko has always agreed that Kyubey probably inspired most of the folklore--stories passed down from mother to daughter, to warn them against him. Nagisa has made the connection, you think, with how he delivered his pitch.

Of course, Kyubey was ready for that.

'Don't worry, you don't have to answer right now! You could help a lot of people as a Magical Girl, though, so you should definitely consider it. It's no rush, though, as long as your mother's still alive. I'm not sure if you could resurrect the dead.'

He turns his attention to you before you can interfere more, 'Are you following the anomaly as well, Homura?'

"What do you mean by anomalies?" You do not feed him an answer by bringing up Nanoha.

'The one you have been dealing with, this Nanoha.' Nagisa does not respond to this, so you can assume she's not hearing his part of this conversation.

"Yes. She was looking for Kyouko, and I thought she may have come here."
Wo ist eine lange Nadel?
Nagisa perks up, "There someone else was looking for Kyouko? I thought I heard someone in the hall, earlier. Perhaps that was her?"

Kyubey nods, confirming it, 'Likely. Her magic is not the same as a Magical Girl's, but we detected her presence here.'

You don't bother asking why he's following her--you are doing the same, after all. She's an anomaly that could swing either way, for either of you.

Nagisa glances at you, "You should go find her, then. I'll be here. I…I need to think."

You nod, moving for the door, "Don't make the deal yet, no matter what. There are some things you should know first."

She nods slightly, watching you with a worried expression as you leave, Ruki close at your heels and looking a bit disturbed herself.

"Uh...Senpai? What the hell was up with that? How do you know her?"

You say nothing for a moment, then finally answer, "I don't know, Ruki. I don't know. Let's go find Nanoha."

The two of you follow the other set of footprints, and find yourself led through the church and upstairs into the living spaces once used by her family. The fire left some of them in ruins, but the surviving ones are relatively well cared for. You'd slept in one of them, once--the actual guest room, she said. She's always been protective of this portion of the Church, though, so you're not too surprised Nagisa's housed in the chapter house.

You're not actually sure living in a Church is something you're supposed to do, but Kyouko's father had not been conventional, and Kyouko certainly isn't.

The footprints lead to the burnt out portion of the building, where you find Nanoha with her back to the door. A large triangular spell diagram shines on the floor beneath her as she speaks to her Device.

"...Did you find anything?"

"Mana residue is detected in substantial amounts. It is too old to determine the source or characteristics of the magical phenomena. I am currently cataloguing all information so that it may be cross referenced against records."

Nanoha nods, still unaware of you, "Good. I want to know what happened here."

By your side, Ruki stares wide-eyed at Nanoha's familiar figure, and a faint squeaking sound slips from her throat.

Nanoha turns instantly at the sound, and leaps away, spinning to face you with Raising Heart sweeping into a firing position. A faint pink light begins to glow in front of her device, and you raise your shield in response, beginning to turn it with magic.
Wo ist eine kurze Nadel?
Then she stops, relaxing as she recognizes you, and you do the same.

"Oh, it's just you, Homura. Why are you…are you following--"

She's cut off as a unreal black spike erupts from her shoulder, jerks her through the air, and hurls her out the window, the shattering of glass cutting through the night air.

Something had been standing behind her. A Witch-like figure, unreal and yet all too real. It is familiar to you, although you have not seen it. You feel a strange attachment to it, even as you look upon it, but…more than anything…

You feel an overwhelming hatred for it. A black, consuming hate that you have never felt for anything. Not for Kyubey, not for Oriko, not even for Walpurgisnacht.

THE THIRD MOURNER: LIAR

Guns appear in the air around you, enchanted and taking aim already. Your mind whirls as you try to imagine the best way to break the thing in front of you, but you can't quite nail down the best option. The joints, maybe? You want to wipe that fake smile away, though.
"Senpai…what is that?! Is that a Witch!?
The monstrosity speaks, in perfect German, its body twitching almost mechanically as it gazes at you with those horrific, ugly eyes, "You are Good-for-Nothing, Akemi Homura. Do you believe it?"
"What's it saying? Why…why does it know your name?"
You snarl out your response in the same tongue, your Grandfather's lessons never having faded, and the overwhelming malice in your voice is pleasing to your ears, "I am good for them, and I will live for them, and you will never be allowed to live."
"Senpai? Senpai?! Nagisa's downstairs! We can't fight here!"
The creature continues to smile, utterly unreadable, and raises its strange black needle. You find yourself snarling back at it, your stolen katana appearing in one hand and your Progressive Knife appearing in the other.
"Shit. Think Ruki. Need to…need to save Nagisa. No way I can help like this. You hear that Senpai?! I'll go get Nagisa out, and check on Nanoha. You--you don't die, okay?! I'll--I'll get help."
Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"You can do this, Homura. I'm here for you. Don't give up, and don't hold back."

Clara time? Seems like a sticky situation.

[X] KILL
-[x] Plan Damage Poke
--[x] Switch your katana for a handgun that has a bigger kick to it. Preferably a Desert Eagle while you gain some distance and observe it.
--[x] Once you tested the waters and got some distance, summon some machine guns and automate them to fire in place while you move away from them. They'll open fire while you keep moving to keep the enemy from coming at you.
---[x] Use knife if it gets close and defend yourself. If the enemy proceeds with melee, enchant bullets for a bigger kick and knock it away.
---[x] Study the enemy and find a weakness, seek it's weaknesses. Only when you understand it's capabilities can you go in hard in the next exchange.

Test the waters. Don't over commit. We can go for overkill once we know what we're dealing with. But that doesn't mean we can't give that thing something to think about.

Ah crap we're ruining Kyoko's church.

Thats gonna be fun.

At least Ruki will take care of Nagisa and Nanoha. We can focus on the Clara I guess.

You put your gun away, unsure when you drew it, and relieved to see that Nagisa hasn't noticed.
Yeah, but did Ruki notice?

Nagisa doesn't seem to recognize Homura from the hospital, so it seems more like bleed-through.

Nagisa's memories of Homura are not from the current timeline.

Lots of invisitext, by the way, for those who don't have it automatically shown — including Ruki turning into background noise. Also some purple text. Have we had purple text before? It has obvious implications, but I don't remember if it was part of this quest.

Anyway, took a big hit on grief, pushing it up by 90. Also lost 14 sanity, but that seems reasonable given the circumstances.

Plan?

Okay. So that's a thing. Also, lots of hidden text, but the gist of it seems to be Ruki leaving to make sure Nagisa doesn't get caught in the crossfire and giving us a pep talk.

Not even sure violence would solve much - I mean, if we're going by tradition, confronting your own dark side works best via acceptance than outright rejection - but Homura have no way of knowing, that, and isn't in a peaceful mood anyway. The doll probably isn't either.

Nagisa's memories of Homura are not from the current timeline.

Most of the grief gain was from enchanting those guns.

We keep going up against tough opponents without any decent inventory. There was a vague plan to hit the base we just wandered through, but I don't think we ever got around to it.

I don't feel we have good odds with just a knife and a shield. There's Nanoha (injured), Ruki (novice), and Nagisa (civilian, child). We're in the real world, in a church, rather than in a witch's barrier, so no convenient isolation, but also no detrimental isolation.

Also, an oddity here (showing invisitext):
Guns appear in the air around you, enchanted and taking aim already. Your mind whirls as you try to imagine the best way to break the thing in front of you, but you can't quite nail down the best option. The joints, maybe? You want to wipe that fake smile away, though.

Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Tick-tock.
"You can do this, Homura. I'm here for you. Don't give up, and don't hold back."

The next-to-last invisitext line was Ruki. But the last line doesn't sound like her, and is presumably after Ruki left the room. Who is speaking? The only one I can think of would be Madoka, but Homura's not insane enough to be hearing her, and it's not in pink (though the invisitext would override that, so that isn't a guarantee).

Forgot something important. Fixed that.
And now I need to re-read....

Also need to go to bed... Will have to go over it tomorrow.

Edit: OK, saw the Meta. Yeah, will need to think on things more.

So, let's review what we know of the opponent: Clara Doll #3 Liar/Usotsuki.

Liar's weapon of choice is a large black needle that she uses like a sword. She doesn't appear to have any ranged options, and seems to move slower than Sayaka, but was nevertheless able to hold her back through sheer skill in The Rebellion, despite Sayaka getting a rather notable upgrade in the movie. The same movie also had Liar demonstrate enough brute strength to effortlessly plow through an army of familiars. As such, fighting Liar in melee is a terrible idea. We should instead make use of ranged combat and our superior speed to pick her apart. ...Which means fighting her indoors is a bad idea. We need to get her outside.

There's also the part where Liar is one of Homulilly's familiars. Stopping time isn't likely to stop her.

Edit: On the other hand, I'm pretty sure Liar only has the one needle. If we break it, she can't summon another. So there might be an argument for using the Will Knife Progressive Knife against her needle, if only to destroy it and leave her unarmed.

Another thing to keep in mind: there are several Clara Dolls, and they usually don't operate alone. Liar is the only one we've seen so far, but that doesn't mean there aren't others nearby, and the Clara Dolls seem to know where the others are. There are several instances throughout Rebellion of someone fighting a Clara doll, only for it to abruptly jump out of the way as another Clara Doll attacks from off-screen. They also do things like knock people into ambushes, even by familiars that aren't Clara Dolls. If it's actually here to fight, there's decent odds that there are other familiars waiting in the wings.
