Ananiel II: Roter Botschafter
[X] Special instructions for the Pacific Fleet (Write-in)
-[X] Get eyes on the kraken here, sonar, radar, submarines, down to the spotters with thermal imaging, utilize everything we got, need to know exactly where it is, what is its size, how many tentacles it has, etc.

Yeah, yeah, he's not green. He knows how to run an anti-submarine campaign. Despite the sass, he complies. There's a lot of sonar noise for some reason, so there's some considerable uncertainty about the exact edges and shape of the Angel through this method. The Angel looks like a big undifferentiated blob. You suspect that it's deliberately hiding information about itself not by being quiet, but by making so much underwater noise and bubble clouds that it's diffusing your sonar pings.

Regardless, thermal imaging, lidar, and simply coordinating surface visuals on the thing prove to be more effective. One of your carriers sends out a few planes to do a flyover of the area you suspect it's in.

The Angel's body appears to be roughly barrel-shaped and resting on the ocean floor. It seems to be structured similarly to a cnidarian polyp or a tunicate. You're not 100% sure of the number, but guesses indicate that the Angel has 17 tentacle-like appendages: an outer ring of 10 transparent ones like the one in front of you, and a smaller, inner ring of 7 opaque red ones that are shorter and thinner than the bulkier outer tentacles. The fog you're experiencing is apparently being emitted from the tips of some of the inner ones.

More worryingly is that in the center of all this is a gigantic whirlpool where its mouth would theoretically be. One pilot reports seeing thousands of long, needle-like teeth. The estimated diameter of the Angel is roughly a nautical mile. The central whirlpool is a little less than a kilometer in diameter. This is not good. The fleet wisely begins taking evasive action. The Angel is moving in your direction though, and you're not sure your larger ships can outmaneuver it. You have no idea how it's moving along the seafloor.

-[X] Encourage the fleet to use N2 munitions against the Angel. Anything with less firepower probably won't cut it.

The Admiral looks at you as if you've gone insane. N2 weapons are the only thing that can kill this thing? Really? You proceed to tell him the parable of Azazel, which took one almost directly to the face and kept walking into Tokyo-3 unmolested. You also mention Arakiel only being damaged by antimatter weapons. He grumbles something about not getting any of "this stupid science fiction bullshit" but seeing the enormous tentacle writhing in the water in front of him does help him understand how dire the situation is. He orders all N2 capable vessels to arm their N2 missiles.

-[X] Protect Evangelion Unit-02 at all costs. The fleet can soften up the Angel, but only an EVA has ever killed one.

The Admiral seems skeptical that your admittedly relatively puny Evangelion is going to be able to do shit against this thing. He's more interested in showing you how it's done. If you're not careful, this will turn into a pissing contest.

One of the operators on the bridge shouts that Evangelion Unit-02 is activating. The Admiral immediately yells into the microphone to abort activation, but you wrestle the microphone out of his hand and tell Asuka to go ahead. The two of you get into a very mature and professional wrestling match over the microphone as you both shout at each other that you're violating each other's authority. The Admiral threatens to have you "keelhauled"; you threaten to have him court marshaled. It's a whole thing.

Unit-02 rises, wearing the sheet covering it like a magnificent cloak. The nearest tentacle, no longer content to wave aimlessly in the air, darts towards the Othello. You hear Rei's voice over the intercom saying something to Asuka…in German. You know a little from your time at the European Branch, but not enough. You suspect strongly that Rei's pronunciation is awful, though, because it doesn't sound right. You only catch the word "B-type". Asuka retorts something that sounds very scathing, whatever a "Neunmalklugscheißerin" is.

It appears that two things are happening right now. One, Unit-02 is using non-aquatic equipment, so it will sink readily if it falls into the ocean without some kind of tether, and two, it appears that Asuka has set the Evangelion's language to German, which means both pilots now have to think in German to operate the Evangelion properly. The good news is that they'll have to be more in sync, which will mitigate some of the thought noise from having two pilots in there. The bad news is that you can't understand them at all and giving orders in Japanese is probably going to worsen their performance. You're so going to give Asuka such a talking-to after this.

Asuka and Rei jump off the Othello and onto a cruiser, partially crushing the poor ship. The Othello is promptly capsized and then hurled into the air by the tentacle. It lands messily some distance away from the rest of the fleet. Asuka shouts at you something about "die Stromzufuhr" or something. You have no idea what that is. You ask if anyone on the bridge knows German. To your great relief, one of the officers can translate for you. Asuka is asking you to get the external power supply ready for her. Rei is telling you they have around 50 seconds of power remaining. You put the order in and watch in awe as the scarlet Evangelion hops from ship to ship.

And then you and everyone on the deck except the Admiral gets knocked over from the force of the Evangelion's impact. Most of the remaining planes on the flight deck fall into the ocean. Asuka and Rei plug themselves in.

Let's dance.

MOVEMENT I
~Lebhaft~

Evangelion Unit-02 is equipped with the Progressive Knife. Yes, really, that's it.

Asuka knows her way around an Evangelion. Despite her lack of practical experience, her high intelligence and combat training means you don't have to micromanage her attacks as much as the other two. Which is good, because you're relaying orders through a very nervous German man whose Japanese skills are, at best, average.

How do you want to play this?

[ ] Aggressive. Get Asuka and Rei onto that Angel as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more ships this thing will take down.
[ ] Passive. Asuka should let the Angel act and then strike when an opportunity arises.
[ ] Passive-Aggressive. The Fleet should take point. It's their jurisdiction, after all. Asuka will strike after a fleet assault.

[ ] Instructions for the Fleet (write-in)

[ ] Instructions for your interpreter, to be relayed to the pilots (try to keep it brief, he's not doing so good right now)

Christ almighty, tell her to take it easy with the landings. The Pacific Fleet are not stepping stones...

[X] Plan: Inside Job
-[X] Passive-Aggressive. The Fleet should take point. It's their jurisdiction, after all. Asuka will strike after a fleet assault.
-[X] Instructions for the Fleet : Anchor the Evangelion to the biggest/heaviest ship with some sort of long and sturdy rope and then distract the Angel.
-[X] Instructions for your interpreter: Let yourself be swallowed by the Angel and attack its Core.

Jeeeeez Tube-Kraken is a big fuckin boy. A mile in diameter? That's enormous. Is it moving by thrusting water out behind it, and that's what the whirlpool is from? Or is it moving with AT-Field Bullshit™?

At least Rei having some German speaking ability will make this a bit smoother internally than canon, but I really cannot emphasize how much bigger this one is than canon. Gaghiel was big enough to eat a whole battleship. Tube-Kraken is big enough to eat a whole shipyard (at least if i haven't misunderstood it's size).

For a rough plan, I think maybe having them chop some of the tentacles as they come up. Then following through with diving at it to neutralize it's field, while some N2 mines are chucked into the whirlpool to deliver some spicy morsels. Then set them off, hope it dies and that the ocean insulates Rei, Asuka, and 02 from the blast 🤷‍♂️.

...I have an idea.

[X] Plan: Dynamite Fishing
-[X] Passive-Aggressive
--[X] With a side of defending the fleet from what tentacles they can.
-[X] Fleet Instructions: Try to aim at the big mouth (duh) or underwater near the Angel - the water will increase the pressure from the blast wave. The Admiral should know how modern torpedoes work; it's the same principle. Start transferring spare N2 munitions to an expendable ship, or if that's not possible select a ship with N2 munitions to be sacrificed. If the initial assault fails, we're going to ram it into the Angel's maw and set off the N2 bombs on board. And with no crew, of course.
--[X] Ask if it's possible to make an improvised hand grenade for Unit-02 from the bombs and missiles carried on board the carrier.
-[X] Interpreter instructions: Tell Asuka to switch to Japanese, because you're having to speak through someone who isn't a trained interpreter and might not be able to relay the plan. Tell them to prepare to attack the Angel if the N2 strikes fail, and defend the fleet as best they can from here.

-[Q] Call up Ritsuko and ask if Angels are edible. We're having squid tonight!

The general aim is to hit it hard, and keep hitting it - attempting to evade isn't going to work long-term, and killing it fast might reduce overall losses. I can see some points of failure; if the Angel has a bullshit enough AT Field, it might shrug off the N2 blasts entirely or redirect them, and I suspect the Angel might have some other trickery up its sleeve. The weird SONAR interference is interesting...
Otherwise, it's a little complicated and specific, so I'm open to ideas.

Collateral damage-wise, this thing is going to leak its guts into the sea regardless of how we kill it, and otherwise I'm not sure what there even is to damage around here; we might start a tsunami or tectonic activity with enough blastin', but I'm reasonably sure much larger yields have been detonated underwater without any adverse effects.

They have launchers and can just fire them into the whirlpool dude. Heres an edited version of the other guy's plan, perhaps this would be less ridiculous?

[X] Plan: Inside Job (Slightly less suicidal edition, part one)
-[X] Passive-Aggressive. The Fleet should take point. It's their jurisdiction, after all. Asuka will strike after a fleet assault.
-[X] Instructions for the Fleet : Anchor the Evangelion to the ship in preparation of melee combat, and fire some N2 mines into the angel's mouth when Asuka/Rei has disabled the AT field as much as they can (we should be able to estimate based off the increasing effectiveness of conventional weapons on the tentacles).
-[X] Instructions for your interpreter: Preparing N2 mines, suppress it's AT field.

N2 mines are much more effective when it's shields are down, and this will blast those nasty teeth off and hopefully shut off that whirlpool effect so we can move in.

As well, the anchors are probably the strongest "rope" on the ship, and honestly the admiral is probably on the biggest ship anyway. we want her to engage in melee only once we've prepared the battlefield, since we aren't gonna be able to winch her up in combat easily at all.

Since they are already in German switching to Japanese will waste time and result in less AT field negation even though Asuka's Japanese is better than Rei's German.

I think weakening it's AT field first and using the launchers for N2 mines would be more acceptable to the admiral (and thus get things done faster), and we need the time it would take to reboot to weaken the Angel. This preserves many more ships, and does just as much if not more damage (due to there being more ships that can attack tentacles which are now weaker to damage).

Yeah, though I'll note I'm using the launchers first, the N2-ram is if those fail (since I'm assuming the Angel will eat the ship, and thus the N2 bomb will detonate inside it).

How about adding:
--[X] Try to neutralise the Angel's AT Field
to interpreter instructions or under Passive-Aggressive?

It should probably go under interpreter, and I'd say we need the time it would take to restart to remove the AT field so the ships can fight back against the tentacles and so the N2 mines actually work to weaken it for the final approach. For all we know it could take 15 minute and the fleet would basically be destroyed (in fact I'm certain it takes an unconscionable amount of time or this wouldn't be a gameplay element). We can get what we need through to Asuka anyways.

The ship as a bomb should be a second turn thing, and something we don't need to mention right now when we have a tenuous relationship with our support.

I appreciate your willingness to discuss this, and hope this all comes through as sincere advice.

IIRC in the show the language reset was done easily on start-up, but now the Eva's moving it could probably be longer. WRT mentioning the bomb idea, it's to get it moving now so if we need it in later turns it's ready. I'm a little worried the fog's - and the Angel in general's - going to start doing something weird, so I either want the damn thing reduced to chum ASAP or have options available later.

Edited plan:

-[Q] Call up Ritsuko and ask if Angels are edible. We're having squid tonight!

[X] Plan: Dynamite Fishing (Edit)

Fair enough. We'll be able to tell how weak it is by the damage the conventional weapons work. Think they'll see how helpful an Eva is for Angels when we do.

[X] Plan: Dynamite Fishing (Edit)

The two of you get into a very mature and professional wrestling match over the microphone as you both shout at each other that you're violating each other's authority.

Sniff, this the start of a beautiful friendship in the making, definitely going to be sending Christmas cards after this.

--[ ] Ask if it's possible to make an improvised hand grenade for Unit-02 from the bombs and missiles carried on board the carrier.

I doubt it's possible to do so in minutes. And even if it is, can't the fleet just...you know...shoot them at the Angel?

I also don't think this is physically possible in the middle of a battle with an enormous kraken that's trying to kill us. Ammunition transfer is something you do outside of a battle, not in the middle of it.

A tactic of having Asuka play keep-away from the Angel while the fleet softens it up with N2 seems a good idea.

I'm going to take Plan Dynamite Fishing and cut it down to what I think are the best bits:

[X] Plan: Dynamite Fishing (minimalist)
-[X] Passive-Aggressive. The Fleet should take point. It's their jurisdiction, after all. Asuka will strike after a fleet assault.
--[X] With a side of defending the fleet from what tentacles they can.
-[X] Interpreter instructions: Tell Asuka to grab an anchor chain as a tether, just in case.

Specifically, no, because these are the bombs on the aircraft carrier whose aircraft just all went into the water. This is more "strap a couple dozen dumb bombs onto a pallet or two", less "remove warheads from anti-ship missiles and tie them together".

Ammunition transfer is something you do outside of a battle, not in the middle of it.
Yeah, this is admittedly a stretch; I did put a caveat in there, so either way N2 fireship can be done, but I can edit out the "transfer munitions over" part if need be.

I do like the idea of stripping it down, I tend towards the verbose sometimes.

Can I convince you to have Asuka negate it's AT field? Also having them actually use the N2 mines with the normal launchers if so.

Like if you specifically don't want Asuka doing anything fair but it seems like a good idea to make it so the fleet can hurt the angel. The mines might be good once it's field is down, but I can get it if you want her to do that twice before doing so since that probably would do enough damage to force it to stop the swirl and let the Eva attack in melee without teeth biting.

An EVA has to get close to start negating an Angel's AT-field, is the thing. Really close. "Knife-fighting range" close. (I don't count the tentacles attacking the ships because those are extremities located away from the main body, where the AT-field producing Core is.)

Which leads us into a conundrum: We can attack the Angel with EVA Unit-02, or with the N2 munitions. Not both at the same time. Now, I don't know about you, but I'd rather not send EVA Unit-02 into the ocean. Until we know where its core is, I just don't know what Asuka is going to do against something a mile in diameter. Particularly since Unit-02 cannot swim.

And N2 munitions can hurt Angels. We injured Azazel (the first Angel of this quest) with an N2 bomb, softening it up for Rei's attack. The usual limiting factor on N2 munitions is the collateral damage it causes to the surrounding city...but that's happily not a problem in the middle of the ocean.

So this leads into what I think is best: having the fleet go absolutely ham with N2 missiles/torpedoes/depth charges, damaging the Angel and hopefully exposing its core, then sending Asuka in on an anchor chain to land the finishing blow.

Also having them actually use the N2 mines with the normal launchers if so.
I...think we've already convinced the admiral to use N2 munitions, and they will therefore use whatever proven conventional means they have on hand? The UN fleet in the show had N2-armed Iowa battleships IIRC. Hopefully they have depth charges too. I can add it to my plan if you really want me to.

Oh no I thought they could do it without contact. If they can't then sure. N2 all those boys into it's mouth baby! Even if it doesn't do more than sslow the whirlpool to navigable speeds and shred the teeth Asuka can at least go spelunking In it's busted up mouth for it's core. So long as they do it's chill.

Alas. If only we could have our child soldiers degrade AT fields from a safe distance. Then we wouldn't have to send them in with knives and fists - we have them stay at a safe distance while tanks and artillery shoot the eldritch gribbly to pieces.

If only.
