Yeah, it's not like you've ever had your performance during an Angel attack hindered by a hangover or something.

See? Now you have a perfect chance to prove how responsible you are!

Ah, back to classic Forgotten-Beast-style descriptions. This attack is starting out normal, which is good.

That has me worried.

Improve your paranoia with linguistics!

[X] Equip Rei with: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Equip Shinji with: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Equip Asuka with: Smash Hawk

This seems like a good plan. Hopefully the Angel keeps Asuka from drifting off in the field.
I'll just note that I changed my vote after I saw Grommile pointing out the name and realising that the Angel seems to have some kind of poison aura which is going to make getting in close...hazardous.

While I also noticed that, my conclusion was that due to it's poison nature, it's going to attack mainly via melee, and to do that that it'll need to get close. Seeing as the guns are usually not enough to kill an angel before it can reach melee range, I thought it'd be worthwhile to have at least one melee weapon out to prepare for that eventuality.

GET EQUIPPED WITH:
[X] Equip Rei with: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Equip Shinji with: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Equip Asuka with: Smash Hawk

You arrive on the bridge. Everyone is in a groggy state of unrest. You overhear several technicians complaining about the Angel's timing. Your head pounds. Seems you're still working off that hangover. Ritsuko notices you seem visibly unwell and asks if you're alright. You wave off her concern and say you're fine. You don't need a lecture right now.

The pilots are standing by in their cages. Asuka says she wants to get this over with so she can go back to getting her beauty sleep. Rei says she's awaiting orders. Shinji doesn't say much of anything beyond a few "yes" answers to some pre-launch questions. He seems really anxious.

You deploy the pilots on the northeastern edge of the city and have them head east towards Daigatake, where the Angel remains. It has not moved since it was first sighted. Its plan of attack (if it has one) remains uncertain.

The pilots are moving away from the city, so if they want to switch weapons, they will have to disengage and double back further than usual. As before, this will take one combat round (unless the weapon is the Progressive Knife), but they will also have to move away from the battle to do so.

Rei has 6 shots remaining. Shinji has 6 shots remaining. The remaining Rifle (not in use) has 6 shots remaining.

Note: you may instruct the pilots to charge the Positron Rifle. This will not consume any more ammunition, but it will take longer to fire the weapon.

You will be giving strategic direction to each pilot. As a rule, please make sure any write-ins are appropriately general. Feel free to include encouragement or other special direction to the pilots, but please, no speeches.

Also, very important for success: please give your plan a cool name.

We can't move everyone out to meet him, if he can fly he'll just go over our heads to get directly at the geofront.

I feel like we really should be able to just helicopter in the weapons with NERV/JSSDF helis/VTOLs, but eh. Game balance.

[X] Rei + Shinji: Find positions behind some kind of cover (a ridgeline or something). Prepare sights, but don't fire just yet.

[X] Asuka: Move to a position to charge the Angel at an angle perpendiclar to Rei+Shinji's firing lines.

[X] JSSDF: Probing attacks with artillery.

Operation Stone Spear

[X] Rei: Move to a firing position, behind what cover is available, charge your rifle and take a probing shot at the the Angels Stinger

[X] Shinji: Move to a firing position behind what cover is available, charge your rifle and take a probing shot at the the Angels body ideally its center mass.

[X] Asuka: Move towards the far side of the mountain and get a visual on its head, be cautious and prepared to fall back in the event of biohazard attacks at the EVA, dependent, either wait for an opening or start an attack on the Angels head.

[X] JSSDF: All JSSDF units are to maintain a decent distance from the Angel given the possibility of its biohazard abilities, have artillery and tanks fire in concert with the probing shots, all other JSSDF forces are to stand by pending developments.

Right not much to say here, probing shots to see where its AT-field is strongest, to find out where the core is located and attempting to attack at all points on its body, having the JSSDF fire in concert with said probing shots to ideally have the positron rifle make enough of an opening to have some of the ordnance get through the Angels AT-field.

Despite the untimely hour, all pilots are functioning at their normal level.

I wonder if we could sell Gendo on this issue by convincing him that it would improve collaboration with the JSSDF.

Perhaps spite for the JSSDF is exactly why Commander "Why does poison in our drinking water matter?" doesn't allow us to do that.

Anyways, only one proposed plan has a cool name, and it's not a bad plan.

While the pilots make their way towards the Angel, you have the JSSDF loose a volley of artillery fire at the Angel, while cautioning them to keep their distance. It's very likely the Angel is a biohazard. The Angels always seemed no cleverer than a predatory animal, but you can't help but wonder if they're taking pains to inflict psychological harm on Tokyo-3. Between Arakiel's toxic composition and now this…you shelf the thought. This is likely just a case of biology, right? It's not like they can alter their forms for chemical warfare, no more than you could become radioactive through sheer will. Right?

You watch the artillery light up the mountainside in the early morning light like fireworks. None of the shots appear to have any effect on the Angel at all. It does not move. Shinji and Rei take up positions behind a ridge and begin charging their weapons. Meanwhile, Asuka continues past them to try to get a look at its head. If it has one. You're not too sure. Maybe this thing is just shaped like a donut.

A second fusillade of missiles lights up the mountainside. You hear Aoba swear. The red forest around the Angel has been burning since the first volley, but the fire has suddenly spread rapidly as the mountainside bursts into flame. According to analysis, whatever the Angel did to those trees has made them extremely flammable. It is highly likely that the fumes from the fire are also toxic. Any soldiers on the ground are instructed to put on respiratory protection. As the toxic agent is unknown, they're just instructed to go with a strong multihazard filter and hope for the best for now.

If the inferno below the Angel is bothering it, it doesn't let it on. Its body expands and undulates for a moment. It looks like it's sighing. Sort of reminiscent of the way an annoyed dog does. It feels like it's mocking you. You click your teeth and tell Shinji to fire at the Angel's body and Rei to aim for the stinger.

Shinji's shot finds its mark first, and it's mostly deflected up into the sky by the Angel's AT-Field. A few of the yellow spikes are shed. They stick in the earth and jut out from the mountain like bent toothpicks. A black scorch mark stains the Angel's white exoskeleton, but apart from that, there's no visible damage to the Angel. It does not react beyond squirming slightly in apparent discomfort. Shinji seems dismayed.

Asuka gets a visual on the Angel's head. It's weird.

The head of the Angel is shaped like a ring, with a large hole right in the middle of its head. Its white exoskeleton turns dark gray in a gradient approaching the head. On the near side of the ring opposite to its neck are two long, scissor-like mandibles, presumably guarding a mouth. They look wickedly sharp. There are no visible eyes. Its head is closely nestled against its body, as if sleeping.

Rei fires at the Angel's stinger, which is similar to the sting of a scorpion's. This gets a reaction, finally. The Angel's body tightens before it rears its head up and begins to uncoil itself. The damage to the stinger appears mostly minimal, but the Angel sure as hell didn't like being shot there. A small trickle of tarry-looking fluid trickles out. You're unsure if it's venom or blood, but it's gross.

The Angel pauses to stare Asuka down, the two of them sizing each other up, before the Angel suddenly snaps its neck straight and lunges at Asuka, throwing itself at her like a snapped rubber band. Asuka shrieks in surprise and jumps back, and the Angel falls on its belly on the ground. Asuka raises her foot to stomp on its head, but it lunges again, this time managing to close its jaws around her left ankle. Alarms immediately start blaring from the techs' consoles.

The Angel's mandibles are sharp enough to tear through Evangelion armor, and it's slowly cutting its way through. Alarmingly, the jaws of the Angel are vibrating at rapid speeds. Just like a Progressive Knife. A clear liquid drips from its jaws onto Unit-02's foot. Sensors indicate that it has a pH of about 0.97. While the armor of Evangelions are acid-resistant, this is pushing it. Asuka screams in pain and tries to shake the thing off, but it has an iron grip on her leg. Ibuki shouts that Asuka's stress levels are through the roof. It seems like the bite is excruciatingly painful.

Asuka finally seems to remember she has a weapon and begins swinging her Smash Hawk at it, but the angle of attack is far from ideal and the Angel is pulling more of its body closer to her. The Angel's AT-Field is strong around its head, so it seems that Asuka's ax blows aren't doing very much, though she is managing to remove some of its spikes and dent its armor a little bit.

You're standing there kind of awestruck at how quickly this all went to shit.

MOVEMENT II
~Lento~

Rei:
[ ] Keep firing at its tail; maybe she can distract it or do some damage
[ ] Get closer to neutralize the AT-Field around the stinger
[ ] Swap weapons
[ ] Go to Asuka's aid

Shinji:
[ ] Fire at its tail; maybe he can distract it or do some damage
[ ] Continue firing at the body
[ ] Try to neutralize its AT-Field along its body
[ ] Swap weapons
[ ] Go to Asuka's aid

Asuka:
[ ] Focus on getting free
[ ] Focus on neutralizing the AT-Field along its head
[ ] Focus on doing melee damage
[ ] Focus on avoiding further attacks

It took me a while of headscratching for me to understand this because it's not specified whether the "ring" head is parallel or perpecindular to the body.

On the near side of the ring opposite to its neck
What?

I...think this is meant to look a bit like one of the Sandworms from the 2021 Dune film, but with a pair of mandibles around the mouth? I found the description really confusing to parse and it took me minutes of head scratching to arrive at that conclusion.

Asuka raises her foot to stomp on its head, but it lunges again, this time managing to close its jaws around her left Angel
Her left leg, I should think.

I was envisioning a round Donut Angel, with a donut body and eyes on either side of a donut head. Sort of like a poodle, if a poodle was made out of donuts.

Yeah I think people are having issues understanding what the angel looks like, too much to start strategizing.

[X]Plan: BEETLE BASHER EXPRESS
-[X]Asuka: Focus on doing melee damage
-[X]Rei: Go to Asuka's aid
-[X]Shinji: Fire at its tail; maybe he can distract it or do some damage

The fastest way to get Asuka free is to neutralize the AT field and try to cut her free of the mandibles. Ideally, one of the other pilots would neutralize the AT field and Asuka could use the Smash Hawk to go wild on Tamiel's Donut Face. That's not a listed option, but I'm assuming "Help Asuka" is open-ended enough to count.
