OP, Rules

Gear

Set Moon to Ramming Speed!
In order to practice my writing, and to avoid my tendency of over-complicated game mechanics, this quest will follow two basic rules:
1. No dice
2. No math beyond addition and subtraction.

Naturally, this will be a very narrative driven quest. It's also a quest about magic, so let's get too it.
The Magic System

  • The magic system is pretty basic, composing of Elements and Aspects, used in Spells, Rituals, and Enchantments. Your starting Elements are Mind, Matter, and Energy. Aspects are Manipulation, Transmutation, Destruction, and Creation. Your stats are Magic, which tells you what you can cast, and Regen, how fast your Magic refills.

  • Making Spells: There are three levels of spells: Lvl 1 spells are single Element, single Aspect, Lvl 2 spells are single Element, multiple Aspects, and Lvl 3 spells are multiple Elements and multiple Aspects. Each level of spell requires 2 prerequesites in a lower level (barring lvl 1 spells, of course), and they need to match the 'theme' of the spell your making.

Base Spell costs are primarily determined by Aspect (Manipulation adds one Magic to a spells cost, Transmutation adds 2, Destruction adds 3, and Creation adds 4.) Level (lvl 1 adds nothing, lvl 2 adds 1, lvl 3 adds 2), and Elements (every additional Element beyond the base Element adds 1 magic to a spells cost)

XP you earn during the game is used to make these spells, with it's base cost being the XP cost to make the spell. XP can also be used to reduce a spells cost, as well as making a spell more powerful in various ways, which may vary from spell to spell.

An Aspect in spells generally only does one thing, so for complex spells, you may need to stack several of the same aspects into a spell. Magic will fill in some blanks on it's own, but only roughly.

For Example: A lvl 2 spell to create a Sandwich out of thin air would need a Creation Aspect for each distinct piece of the sandwich, such as each slice of bread, meat, condiments, tomato, and lettuce. Not to mention Manipulation Aspects for each to properly shape them.

Now, a lvl 3 spell to make sandwich's could add a Mind Element and Manipulation Aspect, allowing the spell to handle the higher level complexity of a sandwich as a distinct concept, meaning that it would only need a single Creation and Manipulation Aspect of the Matter Element to make a sandwich.

As for lvl 1 spells, you would need multiple spells to make a sandwich. A spell to make each of the ingredients, more spells to shape them, and then another spell to put them together into a sandwich.

  • Rituals are a stationary drawn pattern used to boost a spells power, by using Magic instead of improving the spell with XP. Good for when you only need a temporary boost to a particular spell. It adds 10 Magic to the cost for every level of improvement you add to a spell using the ritual. Enchantment is similar, but instead of boosting a spell, it permanently engraves a spell into an item. Enchantment costs are dependent on spell lvl. 100 Magic for a lvl 1 spell, 200 for a lvl 2, and 300 for a lvl 3. You also have to add Magic and Regen to the item, to determine how many times it can use the spell, and/or how long the spell lasts.

Normally I will be giving a bonus XP for every 10 people who participates in a vote to encourage participation.

I'll also hand out Fate points to people from time to time, which can be used for just about anything, special events, introducing your own character into the game, changing the world in some way, etc. With GM approval, of course.

But for this first vote, one time only, I will give an XP for every single person who votes. And if we get over a hundred voters by tomorrow, you get to choose an extra perk for the main character.

So let's get started!

You're 18, your parents have just divorced, you've moved with your mother to the (fictional) suburb of Dryden, about half an hour south of Dayton, Ohio, and it's two weeks till you start your senior year of high school.

[]Name (if the name includes a picture, then you'll get a special picture related perk)

0.1 Moving in

Daryl sits in his new room, surrounded by packed boxes from the move. It's hard to believe that it's all come to this. His dad on the West Coast with his new girlfriend, and him and his mom here in Dryden, Ohio. It's a long way from where he grew up in the outskirts of Boston. But his Mother (Nicole) couldn't afford to keep them in Boston, especially since she couldn't find a job there in time, so here they are, two blocks over from his Aunt Dany (Danielle), who helped mom find a job (Secretary at a law firm) and house here.

He was also going to be a Senior in two weeks at Dryden High School. And he was the going to be the new kid. He didn't have the smarts or the physical conditioning to make his mark in sports or knowledge competitions, his talents lay in his large network of friends and his almost supernatural ability to know what they planned to do and when.

Which if he was still in Boston would have meant that he would be going into his Senior year as one of the popular kids. But here in Dryden, unless he found a way to make a mark, then he'd just be another drop in the bucket till he graduated.

And if all that wasn't enough, he had discovered that he could do magic at the beginning of summer. It was right before the divorce had been finalized, and he was feeling down, so his friends and his girlfriend had dragged him out for one last big party at a bonfire out in the boonies. It was good to have that one last party before he moved out to Dryden, but it was sad as hell as that was the party that he and Rebecca decided that they couldn't do a long distance relationship.

When he got home, his mother was already asleep, the house half full of boxes full of his dad's (Phillip) stuff, waiting on the movers to ship it to San Diego. He was a little buzzed from wine coolers, and fell down the stairs. God, was that terrifying, he could feel his arm break when he hit the floor. But before he could panic, he felt a warmth cover his arm, and it stopped hurting. He told his mom that he just tripped in the dark, and the next morning was willing to put it off as just being drunk, until he made his finger glow, like something out of ET.

When the moved to his Aunt Dany's house in Dryden the following week so his mother could start her new job and start looking for a house, he took every oppurtunity to practice with his magic while they were at work, discovering the incredible things he could do. That it gave him somthing to do that distracted him from his parents divorce was nice too.

So, two weeks till school starts, where he has no friends, hell, where no one even knows who he is, coming off from the worst year in his life.

But he has fucking magic, and he's going to make his Senior year the best goddamn year of his life, no matter what.

0.2 New Clothes, New Car, New Man

Besides painting, unpacking, and organizing, Daryl managed to find some time to go get some clothes with his mother. He had to spend a good chunk of his own money, but Daryl has a pretty good selection of clothes for senior year. (-$500, +minor School Rep)

It took some work, but that old wreck of a car was in the shed out behind the house. Mom thought he was crazy for getting it, but finally relented and said that it was his money to spend. Now all Daryl had to do was actually fix it. Thankfully, he had a few 'special' tools for the job.
(-$2000, The car is made up of seven areas, Frame, Body, Engine, Electrical, Interior, Paint, and Wheels. The condition for all of them, besides Frame, is 'wrecked'. Frame is at 'bad'.)

Before working on the car though, Mom's been wanting you to do some prep work for school, since it's right around the corner now. So one evening after she got home from work, the two of them went out to the library to get some books and Daryl spent some time over the next few days doing the schools recommended reading and worksheets they gave him when he transferred. (+Grades, +Relationship with Mom)

Though now that Mom has been reminded about school, she wants Daryl to promise spend an action every weekday during School studying to keep his grades up, because she knows he's not the most dedicated student, and it's important for college.

[] Promise (+Grades, +Relationship with Mom)
[] Lie (--Relationship with Mom when she finds out)

But now the weekend is coming up, Mom's given Daryl some spending money (+$20), so what do you want to do? (4 actions, $520 available)

[] Work on your ride
-[] Non-Magically work on the car
--[] Frame (4 actions, improve to 'Not so bad')
--[] Body (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Engine (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Electrical (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Interior (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Paint (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Wheels (4 actions, improve to 'Broken')

-[] Magically work on the car (each option taken will 4 XP towards repair spells, chosen by GM to accomplish the chosen action, and can be chosen multiple times)
--[] Frame (1 action, improve to 'Not so bad')
--[] Body (1 action, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Engine (1 action, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Electrical (1 action, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Interior (1 action, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Paint (1 action, improve to 'Broken')
--[] Wheels (1 action, improve to 'Broken')

[] New town, new people
-[] Explore the Neighborhood (one action)
-[] Find the mall, see what's going on there (one action)
-[] See what the city park is like (one action)
-[] There's an arcade/bowling/putt-putt place on the edge of town (one action, $20)

[] School time blues
-[] It's your last school year, and college is right around the corner, time to get prepared (one action, minor grade improvement for the first month of school, can be taken multiple times)

[] You put on your cape and wizard hat
-[] You expand you knowledge of the arcane that lies beneath the mortal world (one action, can be taken X times, gives X XP)

[] XP Distribution
-[] Put X XP into your Magic
-[] Put X XP into your Regen
-[] Write in any spells you'd like to buy with XP

Any unused XP will be banked for next turn.

0.3 Lay of the Land

Daryl wiped the sweat off his brow, but after spending most of the weekend in the shed working on the car, first draining himself of magic, then using normal tools while he waited to recover, he had made real progress on the car. It was still broken and wrecked as hell, but it at least was bent back into a full car shape, wires cleaned, relaid, then connected, and most of the rust and dirt stripped off of it. His mother was most impressed, and commented that he wasn't as crazy as she thought for blowing $2000 for this wreck. (Car Body, Engine, and Electrical upgraded to 'broken')

But despite the progress made, and the progress that you can still make to the car, a serious problem had reared it's head. Daryl was able to clean the engine, but he didn't have the magic, or the tools, to fix it any more than he already had. The block was cracked, components were smashed, parts were missing, and all of them required far more precision than his spells could provide. Replacement was an option, but this was a high performance engine, and a quick google shows that new engines, even refurbished engines, would cost over $10,000. With all the bells and whistles, like the wreck's engine had, it would be more like $20,000. (Engine locked at Broken until you get better Spells, or sufficient cash)

The Electrical system suffered from some of the same problems, but parts for it were massively cheaper, mostly needing new wires and parts to replace those that burned up in the engine compartment during the crash. The computer was thankfully fine under the dash board. (-$100 for new wires and parts to continue fixing the Electrical System)

Sunday afternoon, after cleaning the last of the rust off the body, and having drained himself of magic yet again, Daryl decided to clean up and go explore the Neighborhood, get the lay of the land so to speak. Walking around, it seems most people are either gone or inside their houses. He hear some people doing stuff in their backyards. But two streets over from his house, Daryl sees a red headed girl his age on her knees pulling weeds from under the bushes in front of her house. It was, an intriguing sight, to say the least.

[] Go up to the redhead and introduce yourself
[] Or go say hello to the black haired teen carrying a bucket through the fence gate from the house's backyard
[] Continue exploring the Neighborhood

0.3a Neighborhood Kids

Taking a moment to stoke his courage, Daryl moves up the driveway a bit and calls out to the redhead. She gets up and walks toward him, brushing her long hair out of her face.

"Hey, haven't seen you around here before, I'm Chandra"

"I'm Daryl, just moved in a couple of streets down. Out and seeing what the neighborhoods like"

The black haired boy is now standing beside Chandra, and coughs lightly before introducing himself.

"I'm Jace, I live across the street over there."
He doesn't seem particularly pleased, and with the way he's standing with Chandra, he seems pretty protective of her. Chandra seems to be amused by it. Seems like these two have known each other for a while.

[] Ask Chandra something - Write in
[] Ask Jace something - Write in
[] Use some magic before talking (3 Magic Available)
[] Just say that you were introducing yourself before going back to exploring the Neighborhood

Daryl smiles and nods, "So, what's there to do around here?"

Jace rolls his eyes, while Chandra elbows him in the ribs before answering. "There's not much here, most anything interesting is up in Dayton. But there's Jade, the only teenage club in Dryden, and now that I'm 18," *does a little dance* "I can finally go without 'Adult Supervision'[/fingerquotes], even thought they don't serve alcohol."

Jace speaks up from where he's rubbing at his side where Chandra elbow'd him. "The Fun Center is pretty nice, bowling alley, putt-putt, an arcade, and a burger joint." Now it's Chandra's turn to roll her eyes.

"Maybe if you're fifteen it is. The Dayton Mall isn't too much farther from it though, up where the interstates meet. It's huge, with a ton of other stores and stuff around it."

"There's also the Milden Park, it's got some nice basketball courts"

"You and your basketball, already looking for recruits, Jace?"

"Half the team graduated! Our defense was almost completely wiped out, we don't have enough reserves to move them all up, and our best shooter is gone. If Daryn here can shoot a ball even halfway decently, you're damn right I'll recruit him"

Chandra snorts, "Thank you, Captain Basketball. Though, the park is a good place for a summer party. In fact, we should have a party! One last party before summer ends and we all have to march back to school next week." She looks back to Daryl with a calculating look in her eyes. "We can welcome you properly to the city then, and in a way much more fun that all of us meeting while scrambling to get to class."

Daryl nods, this was going pretty well. "That sounds great, but you don't have to go through all that trouble on my account."

Chandra gives you a little shove on your biceps. "Don't be silly, besides, it's a pretty good excuse to have a party, and there's always time for parties."

"Cool, so, you guys going to be Seniors at Dryden?"

Jace actually lightens up a bit at this prompt. "Yep, they just finished building the new expansion, we're going to have an entire building just for Seniors, with our own gym and cafeteria, and Dryden let's us leave school for lunch. It's going to be awesome this year."

Chandra pulls her cell out of her pocket "Let's get our numbers so I can tell you when the party is" Jace pulls his out too, though with less enthusiasm than she did.

Daryl puts his phone away. "You're on the basketball team Jace?"

He nods, "Gonna be Captain this year. If we can get some good guys on the team, we could go to state."

"You think you'll go to state every year"

Jace sends an annoyed look at Chandra. "All we need are a couple of good players and we can make it." Turning back to Daryl, Jace starts his pitch. "Tryouts are on the third Monday after school starts back up, if your interested, we're always looking for good players"

Daryl nods, "Maybe I will. Anyway, what can you tell me about the mall?"

Jace blinks at the subject change, "It's not my favorite place, but it's pretty nice, got pretty much every kind of store there is. And if it isn't inside the mall, it's going to be somewhere close by. There's a couple of big sports stores I go to, can't find a good pair of basketball shoes anywhere else in town. The movie theaters out there, along with the big box stores, and what must be over a hundred restaurants and party places."

"Chandra, speaking of parties, what kind are there around here?"

Chandra smiles and leans against the SUV in the driveway. "There are lots of parties, of many kinds. This late in the summer, you've already missed them. Most won't start throwing parties again until the school year gets started though, where it's easier to organize. The rich kids are having a big back to school party in the Babylon Garden's boat house Saturday, but that's a gated community, invitation only. Lils invited me, but you'd have to find someone who lives there to invite you in."

Daryl shrugs his shoulders, "Unlikely for that to happen. So, what's Milden Park like?"

Jace answers this time. "Nothing particularly special, the basketball courts and other sports areas are pretty nice, and it's kept up, but it's a pretty standard city park. There are some good shops and restaurants around it though."

"It also has a great picnic area, with covered tables and grills, which we're going to use for the party."

Daryl looks to at the shadows, realizing that's it's already mid-afternoon. "I don't suppose either of you would like to help me explore the Neighborhood? Maybe later, when you're done gardening or whatever?"

Jace frowns at this, "We can't really get away, Chandra needs to get everything finished by tonight. Perhaps another time."

Chandra shrugs "He's right, I've really spent enough time on this break talking to you, enjoyable as it was. Though if you want, we could always use some more help, and we could keep talking while we work?"

"I'll take you up on that, It's been pretty fun talking with you guys."

Chandra pushes herself off the SUV. "I'll go get you some gloves, be right back."

As she heads back inside, Jace moves over and starts talking in a low voice. "Just so you know, I've lived across from her for pretty much my whole life. We're planning to go to college together, so don't go starting something with her, K?"

[] Daryl puts his hands up "Hey, it's cool, I'm not a home-wrecking kind of guy."
[] Daryl looks Jace in the eyes, "I think that's up to Chandra to say if she's available or not."

As Chandra comes back and hands you a pair of gloves, Jace glowers at you when she isn't looking. Soon the three of you are hard at work pulling weeds and distributing fresh wood chips in the flower beds.

"So," Daryl asks Chandra, "Who is this 'Lils' that invited you to the boat house party?"

Chandra dumps a handful of weeds into the bucket, Jace frowns as she replies. "Liliana has been my best friend since kindergarten, her Mom's an executive up at Boeing, she's in charge of selling a lot of stuff to the military, which is why they live in Babylon Gardens."

"I'm guessing Babylon Gardens is where the rich people live around here then?"

"Right, it's over by the river, with a decent size artificial lake. It's also gated, with actual security guards running the gate, along with patrolling the fence. There are parks, a golf course, plenty of sports places, even a few stores inside, almost like a little town."

Daryl thanks Chandra for telling him so much about the area, then decides to try and drag Jace back into the conversation. "Hey Jace, who long you been playing basketball?"

Jace looks over to you from where he was cleaning up. "Since 4th grade. Done pretty well, I'd say. Coach thinks I can get a basketball scholarship to pretty much anywhere decent. Would have had a State championship-" Chandra winces as Jace's voice grew in volume. "If someone had kept their big mouth shut about Steve smoking a joint at one of his parties that we were at."

Chandra catches Daryl's eye, shaking her head at you.
