Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

MAID DRAGON?
"You really want to go? We just got here." You wave a hand at the mess of lights and signs around you, a small ring of people taking photos around you.

Willow smiles and your implied agreement and shrugs. "I don't really care." You sigh, not even bothering to look at your sister. At least she's not zoning out now.

"Fine." You look at the Spirit and muster up your harshest stare. "Please don't try anything, it's been a long day." You shift a step, intentionally making your armour clank, drawing her attention. She eyes you with a mixture of speculation and wariness, the kind of look you'd have if you were trying to determine if the grenade you were holding was live or not.

"Actually a Magical Girl huh?" The suddenly visible slits in her eyes narrow and her tail twitches. "You wear it well." Her stare last for a moment longer, glancing at your sister. "Well, I hope you don't mind if I extend the same offer." She smiles, her mouth pulling unnaturally wide, eyes glowing slightly. "I've had quarrels with your kind in the past, but I hope that's all behind us?" The way she phrases it gives you the distinct impression that she is not happy with that, but you accept the offer that it is with a nod.

"Keep to your word and we won't have a problem."

She snorts at your words, looking at your sister then Willow. "I have absolutely no desire to be impaled for another three thousand years." Your eyebrows raise and your sister gasps. "What are the chances I would run into a Magical Girl with an affinity for trapping dragons?" Shrugging her shoulders, she half turns away from you. "About as likely as finding the dying master of another?" You shake off your surprise, interjecting before she can continue misunderstanding.

"First, I have nothing to do with whatever happened in the past." She nods at your words. "And second, I am no-ones slave." Your eyebrow twitches when you hear Willow snort, slowly glancing between the two of you, looking like she's spectating a tennis match.

The Spirit obviously finds this just as amusing. "Maybe not hers." She tilts her head at Willow's, her tail slowly swishing. "But I know an owned woman when I see her." You open your mouth to dispute her words, when you are suddenly uncomfortably aware of the gentle pressure, always in the back of your mind.

"I'm not." Your words come out rather pathetically and it's painfully obvious that neither of you believe them. "I'm not." Her tail stops it's movements, hand migrating to slowly rubbing her neck as she looks away from you, the awkward moment stretching as the crowds slowly peel away.

"Argh!" She throws her arms up and rubs her face. "I said I'd try to be nice too!" You quickly latch on to the easy distraction from your thoughts. "I'm sorry." She moves at you faster than you can react, sliding her arms around you in a gentle hug. "I didn't mean to bring up bad memories or anything." You restrain your urge to blast her off of you and carefully hold your arms away from her, letting her get it out of her system. "I'm sorry, I don't get this human thing, but Kobayashi says I'm getting better!"

She finally lets go of you, stepping back a few paces and bouncing. "Alright! New start, no grumpiness!" She clears her throat, facing you and bowing, just like a maid from the movies would. "My name is Tohru, I'm a dragon and my owner is Miss Kobayashi." Your mouth widens, mind caught on one part. Dragon? Actual dragon? She stops bowing and stares at you, it takes your sister nudging you to bring your attention back to the present.

"Ah, my name is..." You hesitate. She said hers... "Cerys." You put a hand on your sisters shoulder. "This is my sister, Una." The Spi- Tohru visibly perks up at this, but remains silent as you look at Willow. "This is Willow." The girl herself is starting at the two of you with a sort of horrified fascination, visibly restraining herself from laughing aloud. At least you find this funny. "My sister and I are Magical Girls." She nods and you turn your head to look at Willow before stopping. "I'm... not really sure what Willow's power is." Despite your curiosity, you don't really want her to think about that right now.

Thankfully, Tohru agrees, dragging the conversation in another direction. "So, both of you are Magical Girls?" You nod and she hums, stepping forward to poke you, looking between her finger and you. "Huh, I mean, it's been a really long time, but still..." You frown, but she shakes her hand off. "Probably nothing, you're just really different to the other Magical Girl I knew." She shrugs. "But hey, I was going to introduce you to someone?" You nod and she smiles. "She's not at work today, so we can go right there!" She stops herself. "Ah, after I get what I came here for, if you could just wait here for a moment?" You nod and she quickly runs off, disappearing into the crowd.

You barely wait a minute before she reappears, skidding to a stop next to you with a small bag in hand. "Ready to go?"

Your sister, finally seeing the opportunity to interject herself into the situation, grabs Willow by the wrist and tugs her forwards, nodding quickly up at Tohru. "Yes!" She bounces around a little, her enthusiastic movement stopping for a moment when she looks at her friend before she shakes her head and starts again. "So... are you really a dragon?" Tohru starts walking and you move up to her side, letting the kids take the spot between you.

"Hai!" You take a moment to translate the word when she casually explodes in size, the ground shaking as you try to find your balance. When you look up you have to styme the urge to attack, the... rather derpy looking dragon squeezing itself into the street. You blink, but the enormous green dragon doesn't disappear, nor do the rest of the street seem to take notice of said dragon. What. "See?" Her voice hasn't changed in the slightest, but the way her mouth moves out of sync with her words stands out oddly. She must project her voice with magic somehow, and moves her mouth to imitate humans?

Putting the quirks of a dragon speaking human while not even really speaking out of mind, you let your half-formed sword fade away. "Can you please not do that? I nearly attacked you." Her head bends down to your height, graciously ignoring the high pitches noises coming from the kids.

"Sorry, my human has gotten used to me doing it." She shimmies to the side a little, letting people move around her, a barely visible green sheen over her form. She notices where you are looking and hums. "Using magic to make myself invisible to them." Your eyebrows shoot up.

"That's very impressive." She chuffs smugly.

"Of course, I am a very impressive dragon." Your sister finally gives in to her desires and touches Tohru, gently running her fingers along the thick scales on her neck.

"You're so pretty." The dragon preens and you ignore the urge to comment on her weird proportions. She looks like someone put stubby legs and a long neck on a potato. You snort when the dragon has to awkwardly twist it's neck to avoid tearing it's massive horns through a building, her small bag of shopping hanging off of the left one. Wait a minute, those horns were real? You'd kind of ignored them, since they looked like some kind of headband, but... "Can I ri-" You quickly form and drop an icecube down the back of your sisters armour, cutting her off before she can make that request. Goddamit Una, she's a person too, you can't just ask if you can ride them.

Tohru stops her preening when Una starts flailing, trying to get the cube off of her back as you step next to her, clamping your hand on her shoulder and melting the ice. "Please think before you speak." You aren't sure if the dragon can hear better than normal, but you whisper anyway. She nods sullenly and you step back, barely catching the amused smirk on Willow's face before she speaks. "Hey Tohru, can you give us a ride?" You don't move for a second, torn between glaring at the dying girl and keeping an eye on the dragon right behind you.

"Mmm, I'm not really comfortable having strangers on my back, sorry." Your shoulders drop and you stifle a relived sigh, deciding that an icecube is too good for her. The dragon suddenly shrinks, the woman form standing next to you again. "Anything else?" You nod forwards and start walking, moving slowly until everyone is alongside.

"How does your transformation work?" Your sister latches on to the offer and you eye the small horns. "Ours just gives us armour and a weapon, yours seems to do waaay more!" Your sister nudges Willow out of staring at one of her screens, constantly keeping her attention here. Good girl.

"Weeell." The dragon spins on the spot, running a hand along her tail. "I kind of just squished me into a human shape and made my scales look different." Your eyebrow raises and you look at her clothes, but your sister steps closer, tugging at the maid's shirt.

"So you're actually naked right now?" She nods and your sister hums, twisting the fabric around her finger. "Your scales are really soft and flexible, doesn't that make them weaker?"

"Not really." She pulls a part of her sleeve taut and waves it at your sister. "Try cutting it." You see the disaster coming from a mile away, quickly interjecting.

"Wait wait, I really don't think we should be doing this here." You look around at the crowded street. "Maybe another time?" The dragon sheepishly rubs her neck and nods, patting your sister on the head.

"Sorry, don't really think about the rest of you humans, you're just kinda... there." Willow snorts, keeping the joke to herself when you look over. I didn't know that casual racism could be kind of cute. You cross a street, the lights turning blue. Why are they blue? You follow the dragon left. Just, why blue? "Almost there." You look up at her words, following her pointed finger to a large apartment block in the distance. "Just a few minutes." You nod, eyeing the building. Not exactly fancy, I expected something more. You scratch your chin. Unless she owns the entire thing, but if that was true, why?

You keep your speculation to yourself, quickly ascending the stairs, standing off to the side as Tohru unlocks the door, stepping through it with a small smile on her face. She calls out something cheery in Japanese, carefully placing her shoes in a specific place before waving at you to do the same. "Please follow." You quickly unlace your shoes and line them up with the rest, slightly separated. The maid nods at them and continues on into the main room, gently placing her bag on the kitchen's divider and stepping into the living room.

Sitting on the sofa is a worn out looking woman with red hair, eyes so narrow you have difficulty telling if she's asleep or awake, another step forward lets you see the teenage girl with white hair draped across her lap, idly flicking through a Manga of some sort. Tohru says something else in Japanese and the woman looks over, warm smile not even twitching when her eyes pass over you, and you are rather suddenly aware that you are still fully transformed. Nudging your sister, you quickly dismiss your armour, and step forwards for a moment before a thought hits you. Wait a minute. You look back at the pair of shoes sitting by the door. Did I always wear shoes when I transform?

A quick conversation you can't understand happens behind you, but you look back when you hear your name to see Tohru hugging the woman from behind, smiling contently as the woman holds her hands. You stand in the hallway a little awkwardly, not quite sure what to do, but thankfully the woman eventually waves her off, turning to say something to you. "I don't speak Japanese?" The woman slowly looks up at Tohru, who rubs her neck, quickly saying something.

The woman sighs and rolls her eyes, then turns to you, speaking a little hesitantly. "I apologise for her, and my speaking, my English is very not used." You nod and wave it off.

"No, it's fine, I don't know any Japanese at all." You look down and step over the small border from the entryway and the house proper.

"Please, sit down." She waves at the other end of the L shaped sofa, turning to look at her... dragon after and saying something in quick Japanese. Tohru nods happily, skipping off into the kitchen, the sound of water followed by a burst of heat and she reappears, tea in hand. I swear to god, why does literally everyone have some magical way to make tea quickly. You take the offered drink, getting comfortable as the woman does her best to coax the girl off of her lap, without much success.

Are those? You squint your eyes, but you can just about make out a small pair of horns through the mess of hair, a slight red tinge at the end of said hair drawing your eyes upwards. Is she? You consider the thought for all of about a second before banishing it far, far away. Nope, must be a coincidence or dyed. "Thank you." You take a sip and the woman grunts, giving up and letting the girl stay.

"You are welcome." She lets you finish drinking. "My name is Kobayashi, and this is Kanna." She rests her hand on the lazing girl, who looks up for a moment before going back to her Manga. Kobayashi sighs, brushing the girl's hair before looking to you. "I assume Tohru has introduced herself?" You nod and she hums. "I'm not sure why Tohru brought you here, but she seemed a little sad." You bite your lip, trying to keep an eye on Willow without actually looking at her.

"Yes, we got some bad news and we were just kind of wandering." You hear Willow snort, muttering bad news under her breath as she looks around the room. "She came up to us and offered to introduce us?" She nods at you, sighing happily as Tohru starts massaging her shoulders.

Said dragon leans down, poking Kanna until she looks up. "And guess what?" The girl mumbles something, but the dragon ploughs onwards. "Two of them are Mahou Shojou." The girl pauses, finally lowering her Manga to look at you, a spark of interest in her eyes.

She says something in Japanese and Kobayashi sighs, saying something back. Kanna lets out a grumble and tries again. "Really?" Her voice is soft, clearly not used very often. You nod, your sister doing so much more enthusiastically. The girl blinks, and you pre-empt her, letting your armour flash over you quickly. Her mouth hangs open a little, a little smile pulling at the corner of her mouth. "You really are." She sits up, crawling across the sofa until she can reach you, running her fingers across the tight armour on your stomach.

It tickles a little, but you do your best to hide it, relaxing when she sits back on her feet, looking at you with wide eyes, tiny sparks dancing along her hair. Wait... "I kind of want to fight you." You keep your face impassive. EVERY FUCKING TIME. She drops her hand back into her lap. "I wonder if you are a real one or just a pretender?"

Hmm, I kinda want to fight but I'm pretty sure even Kanna could fairly casually beat the shit out of us.

Yeah, she's probably faster, can concentrate her firepower better, and tougher then we are. In an actual war we are much more useful, but in a spar her defense is a lot better then ours...but that should be fine, its just some roughhousing with lighting bolts.

This may actually be less destructive than Kobayashi is used to

Assuming we go for it

Which i kinda really want to

How often do you get to fight an actual dragon?

[X] [Fight] If she really wants to fight, you guess you can spar a little, if Willow doesn't mind.

Ehn fuck it. Let's roughhouse with the most adorable dragon.

Let's go for it, it's valuable sparring experience.

What the hell. Pretty sure we're about the right level. Long as we don't pull out all the stops, anyway. Which we shouldn't do anyway, because it's just a casual spar.
But argh, I want to chat too. Oh well. I guess there'll be a little talking before and after.

HERE THERE BE DRAGONS
You glance at Willow. "Do you mind?" She shrugs, still looking around the room as if she couldn't quite believe it was there.

"Sure, do whatever." She takes a sip and goes back to staring intently at the red-headed owner of the house. Seeing her occupied, you turn to your sister, lean down and giving her a nudge towards said girl.

"Keep her company? I won't be long." She looks between you and your challenger, nodding before sliding onto the sofa next to her friend, leaning against her.

"Alright." You turn back to the girl, who had been patiently waiting for you to finish. "Just a quick spar then?" She nods and you follow her out the door, restraining yourself to just a twitch when she transforms.

"Follow." Your eyebrow twitches at her tone, but when she shoots off, you quickly rise after her, the ground beneath you blurring until there is nothing but forest. She abruptly stops, floating down into a clearing and shrinking back into her human form, nodding when you set down a second later.

"Rules?" Your armour forms, but you leave your weapon out for now.

"Fight until one calls to stop, don't try to cripple or scar." You nod, and let your weapon form, seeing her drop into a low stance as well, tail swishing slightly. "Go?" You nod and a spark snaps in the air, pulling her hair upwards. Electricity magic? You let your barrier expand just above your skin, letting a pair of fire spears grow above your head. Can't use ice, water conducts electricity. Your opponent hums as she watches you shift, little tendrils of static jumping between her limbs as she starts moving towards you.

She doesn't have a weapon, probably uses her fists then. You tighten your grip on your sword. She has a significant advantage here, I can't attack her freely in case I really hurt her, but she can punch me as hard as she likes. Four spears, six spears, you manage to start on the eighth before she closes to strike, you decide to see how she reacts to a strongish swing.

(Infinity Edge: +1,265 Base Damage, - 515 Careful Attack, +6 Dice = 756 Total Damage
Kanna: +4,000 Base Resilience, + 2,087 Dice, -4,565 Juggernaut = 1,521 Total Reduction

Kanna: 80,000 - 0 = 80,000)

She lifts an arm and your blade skitters off of her fluffy dress as if it was made of steel, it's only your experience with Daiyu's inexplicable hardness that lets you keep your balance, the little dragon girl taking advantage of your brief vulnerability and striking, her fist blurring forwards and slamming into your chest with the force of a speeding train.

(Fist: +7,000 Base Damage, -6,500 Don't Break Humans, +,1671 dice = 2,171 Total Damage
Ignition Knight: +565 Base Resilience, +513 Dice = 1,078 Total Reduction

Ignition Knight Health: 2,205 - 1,093 = 1,112)

You let out a strangled grunt as the air in your lungs is forced out, the force of the punch throwing you backwards, only a quick spin and burst of flight slamming you back onto your feet, your boots tearing the ground up as you skid to a stop. "Oww." You try your best to look nonchalant, but the short quick breaths you were using to force oxygen back into your lungs tell the truth, your armour creaking slightly as you move back to a fighting position.

For her part the dragon girl looks surprised, looking between her fist and you with wide eyes. "Uhhh." She blinks, little sparks dancing along her hair as she looks at you. "I thought most humans were really fragile." She looks at your generally dishevelled state, letting out a long hum. "I guess Magical Girls really are different?" She nods to herself. "I should hit you harder." You wince at the thought of her hitting you any harder than she already is, quickly lifting a hand.

"Please don't, I'll die." You hide your wince as you roll your shoulders, floating your spears back over your shoulder, the fifth pair joining them as you start floating. Can't let her hit me again. You feel something shift uncomfortably, a large part of the jagged pain in your chest fading as your breathing eases. Did she break my ribs?

(Ignition Knight Health: 1,112 + 110 = 1,222)

She nods, looking back at her hand and slowly clenching it. "Right, only hit you that hard." She locks her eyes back on you, watching you slowly float higher. "No fair, I can't partially transform my wings to fly yet." The odd mixture of calm and annoyance in her words makes you want to sigh. Why is EVERYONE I meet messed up in the head in some way. At this point, you should probably just assume that everyone you meet has, by default, had something terrible happen to them and is in some way mentally twisted or odd.

Shaking your head, you focus back on the present. "Well, that's too bad." You line up two pairs of spears and see her eyes instantly lock onto them. She's quick. You really aren't sure if your spears will work... Fuck it. You line up all ten of them, slowly floating a good twenty metres over her head. "Heads up." You really don't need to give the warning, but you are just sparring, you don't really want to hurt her. Too much.

(Ignition Knight Health: 1,222 + 110 = 1,332)

(Thermal Spear: +1,000 Base Damage, +381 Dice = 1,381 Total Damage
1,381 x 10 = 13,810 Total End Damage

Dragon Scale: 30% Reduction

9,967 Final End Damage

Kanna: +4,000 Base Resilience, + 2,572 Dice = 6,572 Total Reduction

Kanna Health: 80,000 - 3,095 = 76,905)

When the explosion fades, a silently smouldering, literally, girl looks up at you. You see her glance down at the little fires burning across her, patting them down after she brushes the loose ash off of her clothes. "Oww." Your eyebrow twitches when she mimics you, only this time you can actually see that she is slightly burnt, very slightly. Guess I can hurt her, barely. She's eyeing you a lot more seriously now that you've actually managed to hurt her, the sparks dancing across her head growing in number as she continues smouldering.

(Ignition Knight Health: 1,332 + 110 = 1,442

Burn: 3% Health
Kanna Health: 76,905 - 2,400 = 74,505)

She winces slightly as the fires continue burning, but when she sees you start rebuilding your lost spears she frowns, lifting a slender hand towards you, the sparks increasing in their dancing. Oh, here we go. You grit your teeth, letting your barrier extend from you further. Can't dodge lightning. You don't bother tying to fly away, you are the highest thing in the sky. I could Halt her, but... she shouldn't do anything too dangerous, it's just a spar. You grit your teeth harder, reluctantly forcing yourself to let her attack, guessing that the long build up was so you could react to it. Oooohkay.

(Ignition Knight Health: 1,442 + 110 = 1,552

Burn: 3% Health
Kanna Health: 74,505 - 2,400 = 72,105)

(Electrocute: +3,500 Base Damage, -1,500 Don't Break Humans, +896 dice = 2,869 Total Damage
Ignition Knight: +565 Base Resilience, +309 Dice = 874 Total Reduction

Alpha and Omega: 25% Reduction

Ignition Knight Health: 1,552 - 1,496 = 56)

The roar of thunder deafens you and everything stops, you can't feel anything, your eyes flash blinded and ears ringing. When you come back to your senses, you feel a pair of arms gently holding you, the girl's voice quietly arguing with herself in Japanese. You let out a groan and she stops, looking down at you. You try to move, but your limbs stubbornly refuse to do more than twitch until you feel your magic refresh you, roughly coughing before trying to speak.

"Oooooow." She snorts, not putting you down as she transforms around you, a sort of clingy static holding you to her back as she takes flight, the air somehow barely even a breeze as she tears through the sky.

"Sorry, for being so rough." Her head is bent back to look at you and as your magic refreshes you again, you sit up, ignoring the slight twitching in your fingers. "I'm used to sparring with Kaa-san, and I can't really hurt her with anything I do." You snort, doing your best to wave it off as you begin to regain feeling, of course it's pain that comes first.

"It's fine, I should have expected something like this." You wince as she stops, transforming back until she is holding you up, your legs just about managing your weight. "Can you give me a minute, I don't want to worry my sister." She nods, leaning back against the railing behind you while keeping her grip, only releasing it a few minutes later when you gently push her hands off, letting your armour fade away. "There, all better." The dragon girl eyes you, looking surprised by your rapid recovery, the slight burn marks on her shoulders still remaining.

"You heal fast."

You shrug, pushing the door open. "I guess." The room looks over at your words, your sister letting out an audible sigh of relief when she sees you without a mark. Kanna steps past you, Kobayashi quickly lifting her teacup away from her as the girl flops down onto her lap, letting out a vague mumble as the older woman starts stroking her hair.

"You didn't break anything did you?" You step out of the entry corridor, accepting your cup back from Tohru, not noticing her eyebrow twitch when you quickly warm the cup back to steaming.

"No." Kobayashi moves her tired eyes to the girl in her lap, humming doubtfully. "Really! She's fine." You see her glance at you, quickly looking you up and down before sighing.

"Thank you, I know you've been having problems being gentle." The girl freezes and you take a sip, watching Tohru scratch her cheek under the redheads gaze. "You should have told me, rather than getting Tohru to fix it." The girl mumbles something again. "Of course I noticed, you think I didn't notice you've stopped hugging me?" She continues brushing the girls hair as you move to stand behind your kids, taking another sip. Kanna mumbles something again and the older woman sighs, not stopping her brushing as she looks at you. "I'm sorry that she dragged you off like that, she wasn't too rough was she?"

You suppress a wince as you remember the state you were in, outwardly shaking your head. "No, she was very careful." She smiles at your words and you ignore the blatant stare from the older dragon.

"That's good." She pokes her glasses back up her nose and straightens up as best she can with her lap taken. "Now, what was it that had Tohru bring you back here?" You rest your hand on Willow's shoulder, leaning down to whisper to her.

"We don't need to say anything, we can just leave." She blinks, looking up at you as you interrupt her thoughts. She was a thousand miles away.

"No, it's fine." She looks back at the... odd family of three. Wait, doesn't that make Tohru the Kaa-san... the mother? "They're good people." Deliberately ignoring your previous thought you stop leaning down, doubting her words, but not willing to prod her about it. She takes a deep breath before speaking.

"I got taken from my home, made to do what a god wanted and now I've done that I'm going to die." She presses her lips together and shrugs. "Isn't life just wonderful." You're glad that you're behind her, it means that you don't need to hide your expression. Fucking shitty gods, what did she do to deserve this? The rest of the room is quiet, the silence broken by a squeak as Kanna drags Willow into her lap, your sister still latched onto her. They both squeak and Kobayashi makes a pained noise as more weight finds it's way on top of her, but she doesn't object as Kanna very gently sandwiches the dying girl between her chest and your sister's hug.

Neither of them say anything, but Tohru does silently walk over to you, gently tugging your hand until you follow her into another room, the door sliding open silently. When you step through, she closes it just as carefully, letting out a long sigh. "It's a little cruel for both of them." You push down your own feelings with familiar speed, looking at the way she seems to sag slightly. "But it's for the best." She turns to you, the door shimmering slightly. "Kanna had a friend her age die like this, she just suddenly got sick and was dead before the week was up."

"And you decided that bringing a reminder of that home was for the best?" You are more than happy to ignore the complicated ball of feelings in your chest for being angry at the older dragon in front of you. "That is more than a 'little' cruel." She winces and nods.

"That's true, but she just never seemed to be able to get over it." She scratches her cheek and sighs. "We tried everything, but she was just stuck in the past." You feel like you are starting to get what she is implying, and it is not doing anything for your anger. "I thought that if she could have the chance to 'go back and do it again', she would finally stop thinking if there was anything different she could have done." She shrugs weakly, a lost look floating across her face as she stares through you.

You resist the urge to impulsively say something, at the way she's using one of your kid's imminent death for her own purposes. But I would do the same, wouldn't I? Clenching your hand tightly, you take several deep breaths and step closer to the woman. Her slit eyes focus on you as you approach, blinking in surprise as you force yourself to relax your hand and gently hug her. "You think she'll help?" Her arms slowly lift themselves around your shoulders and she nods, little threads of her hair tangling with your hands.

"She'll do her best. Even if she can't do anything, she'll make it the best damn end she can." Your shoulders shake slightly as you press your head forwards, stubbornly fighting back the wetness building in your eyes as you feel her hands slowly moving on your back. "Shh, it's alright, you don't need to keep up a tough face for them now." Your grip tightens and your resolve falters. "Just let it out, it's alright."
