Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Well, remind me. What are our exact goals on this mission? With survival being on the top of the list, of course.

[X] Kill the mages before they can try something

Thank you.
Nothing in there about sparing mages. Explicitly not, in fact.
Pretty sure Gaia is more invested in all of humanity getting the wake-up call, and a few dozen mages being killed off now and again is significantly less important than that long term goal.
Also Magic is, as a rule, more dangerous than conventional weapons fire. I'd rather they not do some fancy fuck-off huge ritual to wreck our shit, and that means wrecking them first.

You search your sense again and feel the soldiers exiting the armouries, surrounding you in a rough pentagram are mages in more circles and off to your right you see what you think is the HQ.
I wonder what the soldiers found in the armouries that might hurt us. Maybe the mages are only there to delay us from attacking them?

What are the benefits from ignoring both the soldiers and the mages to attack the (maybe-)HQ?

Basically:
HQ can call for help, coordinate soldiers and mages, and will generally be a thorn in our side.
Soldiers can shoot at us. Likely they have better weapons for that than standard slug-throwers in the armories.
Mages can use Magic and look to be trying to use a large ritual to shut us down somehow.

This is one of those choices where none of the answers are happy answers, and really it's a matter of picking your personal poison.

You need to put your vote in the same format as the rest of the kill the mages votes or the GM will count it as its own separate thing, this came up litterialy last vote.
For simple votes like this it's not a problem, it means the same thing as a longer one.

On that matter though, in the future please just copy-paste the vote and add an x, it helps keep the vote counter nice and tidy.

SECOND STRIKE
It's probably best that I leave Sabina where she is. You look over to her side of the base, more importantly at the steadily growing pile of corpses. She looks like she's enjoying herself.

You let out a breath as you turn your attention back to the mages. "Daiyu." You resist the urge to call her by her Magical Girl name, the impulse almost certainly being a certain meddling planet. Goddammit mother. "We are surrounded by mages but they aren't approaching, they are probably casting a big spell or something." She nods at you as you try to manipulate the temperature. Mmmh, temperature normalisation shield? Or something like it. It wouldn't stop you if you really wanted to change it, but doing all of them at the same time with it in place made that impossible. What a bother, didn't think they'd adapt to that so fast.

You fly towards the closest one, absent-mindedly knocking an important looking tower over on the way past, the Plasma Sphere melting most of the ground floor. When the structure finally gives to gravity, it releases a strong pulse of magic, the tonnes of falling concrete vanishing as it implodes. Uhh, alright then. You continue on your journey, very carefully making sure not to get too close to any buildings that feel like they have magic on them. If they are all boobie trapped and I walked inside one... The thought of being crushed to death by an entire building getting pulled onto you wasn't a pleasant one. Even worse was the thought of 'what if I did survive', slowly suffocating to death underneath tonnes of building and I'm not thinking about this any more.

You blow past the last row of concrete buildings, perching on the top of a very non-magical bunker of some kind, Daiyu settling next to you. The mages are in a circle below you, layers of shields covering them, runes whirling rapidly across their surface as they pour magic into whatever ritual they are concocting. Arrayed around them are a good dozen soldiers, all actually armed this time. They seem taken aback by your sudden arrival and you take the chance to finally let loose and fight like you want.

Your flames rush forth, engulfing the entire block with a firestorm as you completely unchain the raging mass of fire from within, letting all of your frustration and anger flow with it. The fires climb higher than you'd ever seen before, flames so thick that they are almost a physical thing as you feel them hungrily burn everything they can reach, the flames almost seeming to move of their own accord for a brief moment.

The soldiers scream, the flames melting their flesh and charring their bones; a large explosion comes from the side as a rocket of some kind detonates inside its launcher. Haaah, yesss, this is it. You smile a little as you walk forwards, watching your fires hungrily chew at the shields repelling them. Rune after rune flickers across it's surface until one finally stills on it, your fires repelled by an invisible force. They still try to push forwards, but it's like walking backwards and upside down.

A frown pulls at your face as you look at the thick layers of shields, a panicked face just visible as the mage puts his everything into maintaining them. Hmmm. A Sphere of Plasma forms, the fires around you only serving to push it hotter and hotter.

(Plasma Sphere: +12000 Base Damage, +358 Dice, x2 Immense Heat = 24,716 Total Damage
Barrier: +3000 Base Resilience, +679 Dice, x8 Fire Rune = 29,432 Total Reduction

Barrier Health: 3000 - 0 = 0)

The sphere impacts, bursting over the shield in a blinding explosion as plasma is flung back at you. It lands on you and Daiyu and does nothing, running off of your armour like water and chewing into the floor. More importantly, you see the explosion has torn a massive hole in the floor, and the barrier doesn't extend underground.

You give the panicking mage a grin as you move forwards, letting Daiyu slip in front of you, two swings of her sword smashing the ground aside until the hole is big enough for you to fit under. She goes first, shield raised to catch the spells from the mage, who you could now hear was swearing loudly. She crouches under the barrier and sets a foot on the inside before the mage finally casts a spell.

(Shunt: +100 Damage, +50 Dice = 150 Total Damage
Ebony Knight: +1160 Base Resilience, +97 Dice = 1257 Total Reduction

Ebony Knight Health: 4000 - 0 = 4000)

The spell shoves her back out of the hole, her feet tearing massive gouges into the floor as she slides backwards; a quick glance shows no damage other than mild irritation. Not so easy? You encourage your flames to push forwards, under the gap, but them seem to be entirely incapable of entering even the uncovered part. Some kind of area of effect then?

You sigh as Daiyu steps next to you, looking at the brightly glowing barrier with a frown. We could just wait for him to exhaust himself, he looks like he's sweating heavily. You shake your head, if you do that, they might have time for... whatever it was they were doing. You give off an irritated grunt as you contemplate using Juggernaut Wave, but you really didn't want to see if one of the barriers underneath this one had some sort of reflect on it. Why won't you just die already and make my life easier. You grab your sword with both hands and swing it at the barrier as hard as you can, more to let your frustration have an outlet than anything else.

(Infinity Edge: +246 Base Damage, +1 Dice, x3 crush = 741 Total Damage
Barrier: +3000 Base Resilience, +739 Dice, -935 Armour Pierce, /8 Fire Rune = 350 Total Reduction

Barrier Health: 3000 - 391 = 2609)

The glowing edge of your sword meets the barrier and cuts deep, plunging through it and into the layers of shields below it. Immediately the outer shield dims significantly, the mage falling to his knees as you feel the the barrier begin sucking up magic at a considerably increased rate. Some kind of efficiency shield or battery? You shrug and glance at Daiyu, the two of you raising your swords together, pointed towards the part you had already struck.

(Infinity Edge: +246 Base Damage, +144 Dice, x3 Crush = 1170 Total Damage
Ebon Heart: +1113 Base Damage, +5 Dice = 1118 Total Damage

Knights: +2288 Unified Damage, x1.5 Weakspot = 3432

Barrier: +3000 Base Resilience, +42 Dice, -761 Armour Pierce, /8 Fire Rune = 285 Total Reduction

Barrier Health: 2609 - 3147 = -538)

It was never even a contest, your sword rips through the barrier like tissue paper. You guide your swing so that you stab through the barrier mage's back, the tip of your sword planted into the ground through his chest as he makes pathetic mewling noises. Fucking finally, god I hope the rest of them aren't this much of a pain in the ass. You pull your sword from the mage's back, stepping onto the pristine ground as the ritual mages frantically try to completely their spell; not even one of them turns to try and stop you. This is probably pretty important then.

You swing your sword, decapitating one of them and lodging the blade in the hip of another, still they don't attack you, just fervently pouring more and more magic into the rune circle. Ok, really important. Even the woman who was currently only being held in one piece by your sword was still trying to complete the ritual. That fact, more than anything else, is what encourages you to detonate a Plasma Sphere in the middle of the ritual circle.

It's only a brief second later that you remember that caused the last circle to activate. Aww fuck. You feel the circle pulse, the mages smiling smugly at you as their melted corpses fall to the ground. A trap using their lives? You want to be mad, but it's kind of overshadowed by how impressed you are with their balls.

(Summoning Ritual: +4708 Dice

Summoning Result: Enchanted Knight)

The magic rushes out of the circle, forming into a blob floating in the sky. The blob flattens into a flat sheet and turns black, cracks spreading through it. When they reach the edges, the middle shatters, giving you a brief glimpse of a massive room before it closes. In that short moment, a massive armoured form falls from the sky, hitting the ground with an earth-shattering crash. You jump up, trying to sense something through the massive cloud of debris that is billowing outwards from the centre of the base. You catch a brief glimpse of armour, a massive sword and bone white cape settling over the metal plate as the dust settles. Aww fuck.

You rush towards Sabina, ignoring the stray bullet pinging off of you from the now armed soldiers, letting Daiyu take the lead to block a rocket. You spot her after you turn a corner, running forwards amidst a pile of bodies and smiling as she swings her sword; each blow cuts down a soldier regardless of their attempts to find cover. A tank covered in runes sits there immobile, gun turned slightly towards the fight but otherwise still. Ignoring all of this, you land next to Sabina with a crunch, boots crushing a dead body as you grab her arm. The shield Daiyu had cast over her earlier helpfully deflects several bullets as she resists your tug.

"Sabina, stop." She pauses at the sound of your voice, letting you drag her into the sky, leaving the mass of soldiers to do whatever they'll do while you move back towards the knight. They put a lot of effort into this, it's probably really important. You take a brief moment to check on the mages, finding pretty much all of them lying on the ground, but not dead. Passed out? Maybe. They all have shields covering them still so you put off thoughts of taking them out now. Kill this, then them.

You stop atop a sturdy looking bunker, letting Sabina get her balance before you point towards the immobile set of armour.

What was it she said, it only attacks those it thinks of as challengers? You rest your hands on the top of your sword, tip planted into the ground. It doesn't react to you as your group moves behind you, its slowly turning head snapping towards a pile of rubble. A half dead soldier is pointing his pistol at the knight, he barely managed to squeeze off one round that misses before he is dead, sword planted through his chest and at least a metre into the ground. Shit he's fast. You judge the distance, maybe thirty metres in only four seconds? You feel a great deal more apprehensive about fighting it now. I could just leave it here for them to deal with...

You lift you sword from the ground and step back, the knights enormous head snapping towards you just like the soldiers had. "Don't." You hiss the word out to the other two, stopping them before they can lift their weapons. "It doesn't attack unless you do first." Sabina looks unsure, but follows suit when Daiyu lowers her arms. "I have an idea." You hear Sabina let out an excited noise as you step forwards and clear your throat, the knight's gaze not leaving you.

"KNIGHT." He stands up to his full height at your shout, but doesn't make a move to attack you. "I CHALLENGE YOU TO A CONTEST."

The helmet turns to the side slightly, a deep bellowing chuckle sounding out, sounding like gravel grinding across stone. "And what doest thee propose?" His voice is just as deep as his laughter, he doesn't need to shout for you to hear, you can feel it. "Regardless of thy challenge, we must still fight." Despite that, he doesn't move to attack you, waiting for your response.

You smile a little smugly, remembering the pile of corpses Sabina had already collected. "I BET THAT MY COMPANIONS AND I CAN KILL MORE THAN YOU CAN." The best bet is one you've already won.

He lets out a contemplative rumble, looking around at the smoking mess that is this part of the base. "Thee offer with a three to one advantage and a head start." He pauses and you fear for a moment that you've offended him. When he bursts out laughing, hauling his sword onto his shoulder as his cape billows, you feel a little smile form. "I have never turned down a challenge in my life, and I do not intend to start now. Come, let us see who is the most skilled, Challenger!"

You jump from your perch, flying a little to land next to him, Sabina flashing next to you as Daiyu sets down. He lets out another rumble as he gets a better look at you. "A fellow Knight! O today is a fortuitous one, it has been an age since I last tested my skill against a fellow Knight." You feel a hungry aura emanate from him. "Come friend, show me your skill." He leaps forwards, crossing a massive distance as he lands atop a glowing building, it promptly explodes in a massive fireball. You hear his gravelly chuckle and a deafening crash as his sword hits the ground, an explosion just as big as the building echoing out as the ground is rent asunder.

You don't waste a second, grabbing Sabina and rushing towards the Armoury that she hadn't torn to shreds. You make it half-way there before you hear a whirring, looking down towards the heat source just in time to see a vehicle of some kind, four rotating barrels rapidly spinning up to speed. Fuck-

(Shika Anti-Air Barrel 1: +300 Base Damage, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku, +75 Danmaku = 1050 Total Damage

You spin to the side so that you are between Sabina and the vehicle. The next thing you hear is a click and the air is filled with lead. You manage to fly a few feet further before the force of the impacts throws you from the sky, curling up around Sabina as the shots relentlessly drill into Daiyu's barrier, cracking it open after a few seconds. After then, you feel every single bullet that hits you. The first seconds worth crumpling on your armour, the second spreading cracks along your backplate and in the third, it shatters into a million pieces.

You feel numb as shots tear their way through your chest, harmlessly tinking off of Sabina's uniform as another shatters your femur, another just barely skimming across the side of your skull. Eight more bullets hit you, three collapsing your lungs and four obliterating everything in your stomach, the last just clipping your hand.

Suddenly the bombardment stops, a roar of rage breaking through the cold numbness that had settled over you. You try to take a ragged breath, lungs twitching feebly through the visible holes in your chest. Sabina rolls you onto your back and you feel her slam a fist into your chest, you hazily focus your magic as best you can, lungs bursting to full as lips force air down your throat. The holes are burnt closed, new flesh quickly being torn into place to plug them.

When they finally seal, you feel the lips blow another breath of air and push down on your chest. The force makes you cough, blood running down your lips as you take rasping gasps, turning over onto your side as you hack up blood and flecks of flesh. You let your magic focus on the next most important injury, which is probably the fact that you can't feel your right leg at all. A glance tells you it's still there, though the small river of blood that is flowing from it explains the rest.

The injury flashes with heat, burning it closed as more flesh is dragged over the injury, you feel your bone forced together by your muscles as magic sheaths it. Sabina helps you sit up, her bloody hands sliding across your shoulders for a moment before she gets a hold. She drags you inside the bunker, propping you against the wall and kneeling over you. You shake your head as you keep coughing, the hand that was holding your intestines inside you falling to your lap when the skin finally seals shut, an uncomfortable squirming as everything is forced back into place none-too gently.

Your breathing moves to gasps as you finally clear your throat, pain coming from everywhere as you try your best to keep calm, focusing on reforming your armour as best you can.

When you feel the familiar undersuit settle onto your skin you let out a ragged sigh of relief, your head flopping against the wall behind you. While you wait for your magic to heal you, you become rather aware of the horrific noises coming from outside. A glance at the massive hole in the wall shows you pieces of jagged metal flying everywhere, Daiyu sounding absolutely apocalyptic as she tears her way through the machine with her bare hands. Another voice joins hers, a scream this time. It is loud and long, raising in pitch until it passes beyond human hearing, a fleshy ripping noise following afterwards.

Everything falls silent then, the only sound being distant explosions and booming laughter. Your armour finally forms the plating that runs across it and you hold a hand up, letting Sabina haul you to your feet as you use her as a rest to keep from falling over.

Daiyu silently steps through the gaping hole in the wall, immediately casting a shield over you before even saying a word. Feeling her magic settling around you is a comforting feeling, especially since you know that you would have died if not for the precious second that her shield had brought you earlier. When she reaches you, she bows her head, not hiding the tears running down her face. "I have failed my duty. Please punish me as you see fit."

She doesn't move from the spot, not when you shakily put your weight on your feet, magic pulsing through you rapidly. You stumble a little after your first step and she immediately catches you, letting you rest against her chest. The familiar feeling of safety settles around you, the feeling you only get in her arms. Haaaah. You rest your chin on her shoulder, letting her hold transition into a hug as you lean against her. When you press your head to the side, your cheek against hers you feel her silent tears, but you don't say anything, just slowly move your arms up to her shoulders.

She lets you push backwards slowly, still holding you up as you shift your hands to her face, spreading little smudges of blood across her cheeks as you go. "It's... alright." Your throat is still raw, but speaking comes slowly. "My fault... for not sensing it sooner." She tries to make a protest of her guilt, but you let out a gentle shushing noise, sliding one of your thumbs to rest on her lower lip. "I order you... to let me take responsibility." Conflict wars on her face, but when she sees your smile she closes her eyes, resting her head against your hand, her tears not slowing in the slightest.

Your legs shake slightly and you lean forwards, letting her take more of your weight as you press your forehead against hers, startled eyes opening and starting into yours. The soft smile on your face doesn't budge and you feel a warmth unrelated to magic settle in your chest. Your breath comes quicker as you enjoy the moment, the pain of your injuries fading away into the background, the warmth of her breath tickling your neck slightly. Mmmm.

The moment is broken by an awkward cough, you don't move, but you turn your eyes to the side. Sabina is standing there, sword dripping with fresh blood, a massive blush on her face as she looks anywhere but at you. "We uhh, they are coming, we should go." You really don't want to move, and apparently neither does Daiyu, since her grip around your waist gets a little tighter. But Sabina glances backwards and swings her sword, a fresh coating of blood washing the edge. "Like umm, less lovey-dovey shit and more murder please?" You notice that despite her attempt not to look at you, she can't help but keep shooting you glances out of the corner of her eyes.

Still, when you feel people moving towards your building, you reluctantly move away from Daiyu. She lets out a little whining noise as you do, an adorable blush rushing down her neck at the sound, you resist the urge to squeeze her and turn away. You move towards the hole, feeling a lot more steady on your feet after your brief snuggle rest.

You can feel lots and lots of soldiers starting to gather around your building, a lot of them wearing that anti-fire armour you'd seen at the base. How long ago did she start planning this? There is no way she managed to get this many done in a day. You frown as you test lighting a soldier on fire, you can just about manage to outpace one bit of armour, maybe two. Not good enough, ugh, I can't just melt them all now. You lean against the wall as Sabina swings again, a massive crescent of magic exploding into existence and racing at a tower in the distance.

It neatly cuts the top of the watchtower off, the poor sniper inside it falling a good ten metres to the ground inside his coffin. Ok, can't stay here then. You feel another vehicle, a tank of some kind roll out of the armoury and turn it's gun to your building. Uhh, fuck. "Daiyu, shield." She shoves you back as you point to a wall, the shield she had caster earlier growing thicker over you. A moment later the tank fires, the shell punching it's way through the wall and landing right on Daiyu's shield.

Bunker Health: 14,700 - 5000 = 9700)

It pushes her back a metre and explodes, tearing the thick concrete walls to shreds; hypersonic rubble pinging off of your barriers. "Go." She pushes forwards, roof mounted machine gun on the vehicle hammering away at her shield to no effect. You flash back to the still tank on the other side of the base, Sabina's work. "Sabina." She doesn't need any more prodding, flashing forwards until her feet are resting atop of tank's front plate, her sword swinging three times. The vehicle shudders to a halt, the only sound being the engine slowly idling. Shots quickly come in from, everywhere, but the thicker shield Daiyu cast evidently is enough to deflect the small arms fire.

You hear a whoosh and sense a rocket, quickly spearing it with a flaming spear before it can close within fifty metres. In fact. You start stockpiling spears, firing one at anyone who dares poke their head out of cover as you use the tank to block the shots of most of the courtyard. "Sabina, inside." She nods at your command, flashing away and into the armoury itself. She's not that useful out here in the open, she works best with lots of cover. Daiyu shifts to the side and blocks a grenade, only for it to explode into smoke, the rapidly billowing cloud obscuring your vision. Not that I need that.

A lot of the soldiers jump out of cover, taking advantage of your 'blindness' to change spots or get into better positions. You focus on the ones carrying the biggest guns, spears lashing out from the smoke and eviscerating them. You feel another tank halt movement inside the armoury, only a few metres from the door. Thank you Sabina. Distant roaring laughter reminds you of your bet and you stop leaning against the tank, your magic finally settling down as it finishes healing you. You take a brief glance at your hand as the smoke clears. No scars.

They start pouring fire into the smoke, but the majority of it either glances off of Daiyu's shield or is caught by her barrier. The smoke had given you a good minute out of sight and you had made use, while you had been shooting stocked spears, you had also been forming Plasma Spheres. Three shoot out, obliterating a building each as they enter the open windows and detonate, filling the confined space with plasma. The last one moves for the armoury, Sabina flashing to your side as it passes through the destroyed door. You aren't exactly sure where most of the ammo is, so you just move it towards the largest pile of stuff you can find.

You have a brief moment to appreciate the fireball before the shockwave hits you, slamming you back against the tank with a whump. Panting, you push yourself up, adrenaline running thick in your veins. A quick search shows that any soldiers you had missed were running away, making good time towards the outside of the base. Could chase them down. You shake your head. Need to get the mages. You look for them again, finding that most of them were still floored, a couple had managed to get their shit together and escape. Nnm, nothing to do about that. You grab Sabina and she doesn't jump, evidently getting used to you randomly grabbing her and flying off. That sounded better in my head.

The three of you drop at the nearest group of mages and you sigh when you see a familiar barrier glowing brightly. And this is why I brought you Sabina. You tap her arm and point at the bubble, it takes her a moment to get your meaning, but she does eventually. With a grin she swings, the mage holding up the barrier falling into two pieces with a wet thwack. The ritual mages don't look at you again, this time you know better, holding Sabina back from attacking them.

You step forwards and clamp your hand around a mage, dragging his kneeling body away from the circle, after a metre of so a tendril of magic snaps and the ritual circle dims. You drive your sword through his back, his death is nearly instantaneous. The other mages look up at you, evidently more panicky than the last group, since they all edge away from you sightly. But they don't stop their ritual. Really, these guys are fucking nuts. You reach forwards to pull another from the circle, Sabina moving around the other side when the runes flash a sickly green. You pull your hand back quickly, an expression of agony spreading across the mages faces as they writhe, quickly ageing to ash before you.

Another summoning circle forms, different from the last one, feeling much more... heady. It cracks and opens, a pitch-black void coming from the other side. There is a brief flash of colour before it closes, nothing coming through. Huh. You look at the ash that is blowing away in the wind. Guess they fucked up? You shrug as you step back, spinning on the spot as you search for the other mages. Aaaand they are all gone. Or dead, probably dead. You glance back to the circle, the sickly green magic slowly dissipating from the runic circle, the runes themselves burned into the concrete.

You take another glance at the sky, but nothing has happened, nor are there any strange side effects. Alright... You rub your chest as it aches a little, waving away Daiyu's concerned look. Not even halfway done yet. You look towards the big glowing building, everything about it basically screaming 'HQ'. Not far off you see the Knight, plowing his way through several buildings as he laughs joyfully.

So....Clocktower mages........

You're under attack by someone working for Gaia, and you respond by trying to summon a warrior aligned with Gaia o_O

I personally find it hilarious that they gave their lives to summon this badass knight to kill Cerys...only for Cerys to use him to help kill the rest of the base. They really fucked that up didnt they.

Im curious what the second group of summoners was trying to call though.

[] Focus on the bet you made

Probably this? Not really sure what would happen if you lose a bet with a knight summoned from sacrificial magic...

I always have a difficult time telling whether or not this is Cerys actually doing something unconsciously with her magic or it's just writing flare.

I think I'm going to lean towards the former considering that little bit about her magic right after leaving Morgan.
