Lore Check - Imperial Families
@Maugan Ra - Another question, if you are willing... do we know anything about the current attitudes of the Otomo in general towards specific clans? We know the general strategies, but are there any clans they'd be particularly inclined to go after or not go after, based on current events and their own general objectives?

Lore (Imperial Families) 5k4: 25

The Otomo are in a bit of an interesting position at the moment. For one thing, they suffered really heavily during the Clan Wars - Bayushi Kachiko did not like them even slightly, and used her position as Empress and the illness of the Emperor (read: his drawn out death by poison) to ignore and undercut them at every turn. When you combine that with the fact that their political power relies on utilizing the authority of the throne and the rules and customs of a thousand years of history, they lost a vast amount of their power and influence during those chaotic years.

Now, though, there is an Emperor on the throne once again. Toturi I is a strong, popular and highly respected ruler who seems to be taking to his new position very well. He has confirmed the continued authority and duties of the Imperial families and issued new charters to all of the Clans outlining their roles and duties in the new Empire. He is everything the Otomo want and need, and they are throwing their full and total support behind him personally.

In terms of their actions and intentions, you know they don't like the Mantis for being crude upstarts and they resent the Lion and Crab for their deeds during the Clan Wars. They seem inclined to support the Crane and the Phoenix in their campaigns of peaceful rebuilding. Oddly enough, their actions towards the Scorpion so far indicates a surprisingly positive attitude, though why or what they might mean you don't know.

1.11 - Bathhouse Diplomacy
[x] Show deference to his person and curiousity about his work. Be charming and flattering, but don't push it. If you can, get him talking about himself while you pretend to listen with great attention while actually listening with great attention.
[x] If an opportunity arises to offer him insight or information from your own studies, do so (respectfully). Happily provide any information that you can that you don't think will have him targeting your own clan.
[x] At some point, if there's a smooth way to do so, mention your primary role (as a broad source of useful knowledge) in being here for the Scorpion. Express general curiousity and love of learning.
[x] When the conversation permits, ask politely what kind of a retinue he is here with. Assuming that he's here alone or with relatively few followers-on, mention that you'd be happy to offer a similar support to him as you do to your clanmates, should he have desire or need of such things. Package it as a Loyalty to Rokugan and Loyalty to the Emperor thing. If pressed, admit that you "would not wish to find yourself the target of Otomo-dono's displeasure" in any situation.

"You would indeed be correct, Soshi-san." Otomo Kairyu says easily, neither his tone nor his expression giving any clue as to his mood. "Though I confess some surprise. It is not often that I meet samurai aware of the precise duties and structure of the Imperial Bureaucracy."

You suspect it might be more accurate, if less polite, to say that he rarely meets samurai who care about such things. The bureaucracy is a vital tool in making sure that Rokugan functions as an Empire rather than merely a collection of disparate tribes, but there is precious little glory to be gained by working for it. It likely does not help that most samurai receive their equipment and supplies directly from their lord without ever seeing the logistical effort needed to provide such things, and therefore might fool themselves into believing it is of less importance than it is.

"I would not describe myself as any kind of expert on the topic, Otomo-sama." You reply, remembering the old courtier's adage - when in doubt, err towards humility. "It is more a matter of personal interest. On the battlefield, my actions might affect the lives of a handful of men. In the court, I might influence the fate of hundreds. But the actions of the Imperial Bureaucracy steer the course of the entire Empire. The sheer scale involved is, well, fascinating."

"Ah, someone who understands." Otomo Kairyu says with a smile, though there is a slightly suspicious glint in his eyes, as though he is weighing up your intent and judging how genuine it is. "Indeed, the duty of the Ministry of Service might accurately be described as logistical support for the entire Empire. One would expect a Clan as proud of their military heritage as the Lion to understand the importance of such things, yet I have continually found myself stymied by their lack of interest in the matter."

You are reasonably sure that is a trap of some kind - certainly the Otomo would not leave such a blatant opening accidentally. Rather than step into it, though, you opt for a more friendly and helpful approach.

"It is my understanding that the Matsu have often been content to leave such matters to their cousins among the Akodo." You offer, allowing the delicious heat from the baths to help you sound relaxed and almost casual. "It is likely that the family as a whole has not yet adapted to the change in circumstance. Though I believe a considerable number of Akodo samurai pledged their loyalty to their cousins rather than leave the Clan altogether. Such warriors might be more open to discussing such matters."

You can almost see the Otomo begin to relax, his worries soothed by the lack of any direct action on your part and the possibility of a new path past whatever obstacle has been bothering him. "They might well do. Certainly, every family has their own unique approach to problems; stones in the castle that is the Empire proper." He muses. "Your own family has a reputation for providing discrete support and information to your masters, does it not Soshi-san?"

"That is our traditional role, yes, Otomo-sama." You reply, wondering how far you dare to push this. "I was assigned to Bayushi Kimoko-sama's retinue for that purpose, in the belief that a broad source of useful knowledge would better serve the needs of the Clan than one with only narrow expertise."

Otomo Kairyu makes a thoughtful noise and sinks slightly deeper into the hot water, evidently enjoying himself. You take a moment to muster your thoughts and give him a chance to speak, but he seems content to simply relax and think for the moment.

"Of course, much as my family serves the Scorpion, so too do the Scorpion serve the Emperor." You say carefully. "As such, it would also be my duty to place such information at your disposal as well, Otomo-sama, should you desire it."

The Imperial courtier raises one eyebrow. "Oh? And what would the Scorpion desire in return for this assistance, Soshi-san?"

You briefly consider denying any ulterior motives... but no, no one ever believes that when it is said by a Scorpion. Best to be reasonably up-front about it.

"For the Scorpion as a whole, anything which demonstrates our loyalty and commitment to the Son of Heaven and his chosen representatives is inherently beneficial, Otomo-sama." You reply, aware that both of you are carefully avoiding any talk of just why the Scorpion might wish to reassure the throne of their loyalty.

"And for you personally, Soshi-san?" Otomo Kairyu presses, a faintly amused look in his eyes. "I doubt you have been specifically instructed to offer such services to me."

"Personally, Otomo-sama, this is my first Winter Court." You say calmly. "Anything which aids my superiors and avoids incurring Imperial displeasure will reflect positively on me. Any and all ambitions I might reasonably hold now or in the future are better served by such a course."

"All men are ambitious. The wise lord makes sure his servant's ambitions are best served by loyalty to his own cause." Otomo Kairyu says softly, and you smile slightly as you recognize the quote.

"Bayushi Tangen did insist that his masterpiece contained only the most honest of truths." You comment. "I have always assumed that he named it Lies out of a sense of irony."

"There are worse motivations to have." The Otomo says with a short laugh. "Still, while this conversation has been enlightening, it would be a poor choice for my health to spend too much time in such waters. Thank you for your company, Soshi-san. I may well take you up on that offer."

With that, Otomo Kairyu lifts himself out of the baths and heads for the exit. You bow as best you can in the water, then settle yourself back down again. That went... well? It is hard to be sure, but the Imperial seems to like you and you parted on friendly terms. Calling him an ally would be far too premature, but you have at least made positive contact with a person of importance in the upcoming court. Bayushi Kimoko should be pleased.

Hm. So.

Tinysquid's asleep right now I think so I guess I'll try my hand at this. We presumably have time for... oh, at most one more place to go after this before getting ready; so we have to chose carefully. Ideally we'd want to let our superior know about our offer to the Otomo sooner rather than later, but... eh.

First option's likely to net us some of the more pious sorts, Lion or not - I'm inclined to think mostly not, given that delegations from all the Clans are here. Consequently the more pious sorts will be praying for good fortune, and to get comfy. So perhaps a Shugenja if we're lucky, and possibly some Phoenix or Dragon. Good possibility.

Getting a look at the surrounding town is also always good, per our initial discussion with our lord and Pale Oak. Can't go wrong there but it doesn't necessarily give us the same immediate in-court contacts. Conversely we might not need them, though: This is also a very good choice. I can see a (comparatively) strong argument for it.

Watching the Lion train... hrm. Can't go wrong with this but it's basically begging for someone to come up and go "hey :^) what 'cha doing" which is its own mixed bag and might be quite interesting.

Finding somewhere that overviews the area... well, let's think about this shall we? Why are you going to want to view the area. Because you don't know it? Because you know it? The latter is entirely possible; the former is eminently practical and also speaks of a more military mind. I suspect we meet someone more martially inclined, get a chance to make another connection - and good foundation for building allies is very important for us in our position.

If we go to Bayushi Kimoko I suspect we'll get to know her better and maybe see someone she was talking to. Or something.

SO, with that in mind: I'm gonna have to say that-

[X] Find somewhere that offers a view over the surrounding terrain.

-will be my vote.

For a few minutes, you simply sit there and enjoy the hot water of the baths. Your conversation with Otomo Kairyu was interesting and potentially very useful, but you came to the baths primarily to wash and make yourself presentable for the court. Bayushi-sama is likely intending to do the same, or has perhaps found another way to ritually clean herself - certainly she cannot be intending to go to the court still dirty from the road, for such would be an incredible breach of protocol and basic good manners.

When you have finished cleaning, you rise from the pool and retrieve your towel, pausing for a moment to inspect yourself in the water's reflection. As a Bushi, you are lean and fit, but there is nothing particularly exceptional about your looks or physique, and as yet you lack any kind of battle scars. Those will likely come in time, for you are not so foolish as to equate even an entire career in the courts with mere physical safety.

Shaking your head, you leave the baths and return to the changing room. As expected, the Heimin have attended to your kimono, cleaning the dust and grime of the road from your garments with industrious care. You will likely have to wear something completely fresh to the court in any case, but it is a nice gesture. You are in the process of fitting your mask back on when Yogo Hanzo joins you.

"Soshi-san." He says with a nod, beginning to dress as well. "Was your time with the Otomo productive?"

"Reasonably so, Yogo-san." You reply, picking up your swords and inspecting them out of habit more than any actual paranoia. "Otomo Kairyu is an interesting man, one who might well be willing to work with us if approached correctly. And you?"

"Mirumoto Maseru is not a monk, though I can understand the confusion." Hanzo says with a nod, putting his own fully-concealing mask on. "He is more of a religious pilgrim than a delegate, but since his Clan has not sent anyone else he is effectively the voice of the Dragon here."

"Interesting." You murmur thoughtfully. "The Dragon have never been a populous Clan, so perhaps this sort of thing is to be expected. Anything of note?"

"He claimed to be on a pilgrimage to places of importance to all of the original Seven Thunders." Hanzo observes. "Arranging a way for him to visit Shiro no Shosuro might be an appropriate gift."

"I'm sure Bayushi-sama will be pleased to learn that." You say, restraining the urge to smile. "Now, I had thought to find somewhere to view the surrounding terrain. You?"

"I believe I will see what kind of temples they have here. I should have time to inspect it before we need to return to Bayushi-sama's side." Hanzo says after a moment of consideration. He bows to you, one samurai to another. "Until then, Soshi-san."

You return the bow, and then the two of you go your separate ways.

It does not take long for you to find a suitable viewpoint. Shiro Matsu supports a great many watchtowers and other fortifications around its perimeter, but a considerable number are left empty at any given moment, reserved for particular duties or for those times when a full alert is issued. A few minutes of looking locates one particular tower on the perimeter wall which stands unused, and since there don't appear to be any Matsu waiting to cut your head off for trespassing you make your way inside and climb to the upper level.

The view is quite simply spectacular. All around you the vast bulk of the Spine of the World mountains reach majestically towards the heavens, dominating the scene through sheer size. To the south Beiden Pass cuts straight through the rocks, as though carved by some great celestial sword, and to the north you can see the rolling plains and farmland of the Lion Clan's heart. You are not much of an artist, but with sights like this to call upon for inspiration you would be willing to try.

Before you can think of composing your first masterpiece, though, the soft sound of sandeled feet against stone warns you of someone else ascending the tower. You turn to look at the stairs, and are thus not surprised when a severe looking man in the blue and white of the Crane joins you on the upper levels.

"Ah, it appears I am not the only one to see the value of this location." The Crane says with a faint smile, bowing to you. "Greetings, Scorpion-sama. My name is Daidoji Chen, assigned to the retinue of Doji Mariko."

You return the bow. "Greetings, Daidoji-sama. I am Soshi Naoto, assistant to Bayushi Kimoko. And please, 'san' is more than sufficient for a humble servant such as myself."

"Very well then, Soshi-san, I must insist on a similar term." Daidoji Chen says, his smile broadening slightly. He straightens from his bow, moving to join you by the edge of the tower. "Ah, an excellent vantage point. What brings you up here, Soshi-san?"

Lore Check - Crane Clan
Lore (Crane Clan) 5k4: 21

The Crane Clan suffered massively during the Clan Wars. Much of their power and influence was built to focus on the political scene and relied in many ways upon a strong Emperor to maintain the world in which they operated. After the Coup, though, the Emperor was an inexperienced and sickly boy married to a Scorpion with a grudge against them, and they paid dearly for it.

The most notable points about the Crane's involvement in the Clan Wars centered around the mysterious doppelgänger that imitated their Clan Champion, Doji Hoturi. This 'False Hoturi' was crude and insulting, ruining many alliances, and swiftly became corrupted by the Taint after venturing into the Shadowlands. He lead an army of shadowlands monsters to burn down Shiro Kakita and severely damage Kyuden Doji, as well as inflicting untold damage on towns and villages under Crane rule. It was only the return of the real Doji Hoturi, who later went on to become the Crane Thunder, that put an end to the imposter's rampage.

You don't know what the Crane are looking for here, but you suspect they very much desire a long lasting peace and the rebuilding of sundered alliances. By the end of the Clan Wars the Crane effectively didn't have an army any more, and were heavily reliant on Yoritomo's Alliance just to defend their own lands. It seems reasonable to conclude that their ties with the newly formed Mantis Clan will be strong, and that they will not be ready allies to the Lion or Crab who were the main forces responsible for the damage to their lands. Beyond that, it is difficult to say.

Generally speaking, Crane diplomacy relies upon doing favors and making friends. Their courtiers specialize in finding what you want and making sure you get it, in the expectation of returned favours a later date. They are a heavily political Clan, now more than ever, and it is often said that there is a Crane in every court.

1.13 Meeting Daidoji Chen
"Merely admiring the scenery, Daidoji-san." You say, your smile hidden behind your mask as you gesture to the surrounding terrain. "I would imagine that there is no other place in the Empire to offer a view such as this. It would be a shame to come here and then not take the time to appreciate it."

"A worthy sentiment, Soshi-san." Daidoji Chen agrees, studying the slopes of the mountains. "I am almost envious of the Matsu, to have their home located in a place of such beauty. But then, this must be almost nostalgic for you."

"Shiro no Soshi is likewise located in the high mountains, so I can most certainly see the appeal." You say with a nod. "But reputation would lead me to assume that Shiro no Daidoji is likewise aesthetically pleasing. The Crane are well renowned for blending martial prowess with the creation of beauty."

"It pleases me to hear you say that, Soshi-san. And yes, my home has many beautiful gardens and is filled with marvelous works for art. We cannot boast great mountains in our lands as you can, but we make do." Chen says with fond nostalgia. "Alas, the recent wars have scarred both of our lands, scars which may not heal for a great many years. I expect your Clan is rather consumed with the need to rebuild?"

"It saddens me to hear that, Daidoji-san, but you need not fear for the Scorpion." You say in a sympathetic fashion. "Shiro no Soshi has already been rebuilt, and I am given to understand that Kyuden Bayushi will be fully repaired in the spring."

Chen pauses at this, his eyes narrowing as he studies you. For your part, you merely smile blandly. In truth you do not know precisely how your Clan accomplished such a rapid rebuilding, but you suspect there was probably a great deal of prior preparation and illusion magic involved. Regardless, the Scorpion have always specialized in hiding their methods and their strength, so while this will be an unwelcome surprise to the Crane it should not be unbelievable. Such were the instructions handed down by Bayushi Kachiko-dono before your delegation set off - admit to strength, but hide the specifics.

(Besides, it's the sort of deception that will fall apart immediately in the spring when trade and business resumes through the supposedly destroyed castles. Better to reveal it now, on your own terms.)

"That is good news indeed, Soshi-san." Chen eventually says. "Though I doubt the Matsu will be pleased to hear it."

"Your suspicions are likely correct, Daidoji-san. Why, it might be better if we avoid distressing our hosts by offering such details too soon."

The Daidoji family are predominately warriors, but Chen evidently has enough understanding of courtly protocol to realize the potential value of your words. If the Crane are negotiating with the Lion, a superior understanding of the Lion's neighbors could be very useful indeed. And if they are the only ones to understand the possibility of trade with a restored Scorpion, then they effectively have first claim to the potential gains therein.

It is, in short, a gift of knowledge and a sign of potential cooperation being offered from the Scorpion to the Crane. And such a gift must be repaid.

"Your grasp of courtesy is truly impressive, Soshi-san." Daidoji Chen compliments you. "Tell me, do you play Go?"

"I flatter myself as having some skill at the game, yes."

"Marvelous. I always enjoy meeting new opponents." Chen says with seemingly genuine warmth. "Perhaps you might honour me with a match tomorrow, after court had concluded?"

And just like that, you have a point of contact within the Crane. You smile and bow. "I look forwards to it, Daidoji-san."

So, based on your previous actions and the analysis performed alongside people's votes, I figured I'd roll Courtier to see how well you managed to ingratiate yourself with Daidoji Chen. 5k3 came up with a final score of 31.

End result, he's impressed by your savvy and you've earned yourself a way in with the Crane. Have a think about what you intend to do with that.

-/-

A short while later, you and Hanzo are kneeling in front of Bayushi Kimoko once more, finishing your report. The older Bushi smiles in genuine pleasure.

"So, court has yet to begin and already we have potential contacts within the Crane, the Dragon and the Imperials." She says slowly. "Very good work. I understand that all of the delegates have now arrived, so we must prepare for the official opening of the court. Go and get dressed, and remember, it is not just the Matsu we need to consider here."

Hmm, damn, not sure how much it matters. What we should discuss is who we want to go after first? Like, what's our aim here. The Lions aren't going to be any help.

Of course it matters. This is the first impression we'll be giving, and everyone will know that it is consciously chosen. Also, the Lion are predisposed to dislike us - but our primary goal here as a delegation essentially boils down to "make sure that the lion don't dislike us too much", and Pale Oak-san specifically wanted information on the behavior and attitudes of the Matsu magistrates.

[ ] Tough, practical clothing that will emphasize your martial training.
- This is the "make friends with the Lion" pick, and will invite them to test us and possibly accept us. There's a potential drawback where we're aligning ourselves away from the peace/rebuild factions, and those are where our more natural allies are. That's mitigated a bit by the fact that we're scorpion, and they'll probably be willing to believe that we're doing it to manipulate the Matsu, but it still has implications. The bigger problem is that we're kind of pathetic in the combat arts as Bushi go. Given that our results when we *are* tested aren't all that likely to be impressive, presenting ourselves as particularly martial now might be seen as posturing, which could cause the Matsu themselves to dislike us. It'd be a good pick if we were more martial ourselves, but I think it's too much risk for too little gain here.

[ ] Stylish and impressive clothing that will emphasize your courtly skills.
- This pushes us more into alignment with the peace faction, and may draw interest from those who would seek us out for courtly things. On the down-side, it's likely to make us look a bit worse in the eyes of the more warlike types. It also openly declares our courtly skills - when those might be better served being revealed in time and place that we choose. We already have an opening with the Otomo and the Crane. The Dragon effectively doesn't matter for this particular game, and it's probably not going to win any friends with the Crab, Lion, Unicorn, or Mantis, all of whom tend to be fairly warlike, and all of whom would have likely sent a generally warlike delegation to the Matsu Winter court. The only ones left are the Phoenix, and those we can approach in person relatively easily after court has opened.

[ ] Subtle, understated clothing that will deflect attention.
- As Scorpion, I feel like this is the default choice. It plays to a few different things. It plays to everyone's assumptions about our clan - that we are a clan of secrets and lies, and that we don't give out any information without reason. This may confirm a few of the distasteful opinions that some of the Matsu have about us, but is otherwise pretty neutral - and it's not like anything we did was going to dispel those. We're also a younger member of the delegation. It's entirely reasonable that we send signals of "I'm not all that important. You should pay attention to someone else." It feeds into the reputation that we're already starting to build as a somewhat humble, understated individual who is focused more on the informational side of things. It also means that we probably *won't* get quite as much attention - giving us a bit more space to move quietly, rather than being thrust into the center of things. I think that plays to our strengths a bit better.

[x] Subtle, understated clothing that will deflect attention.

As for who we go after first - now, I think, is the time for watching. We're going to get a rush of information once everyone shows up at Winter Court - even things like "how large is the delegation", "What does the bushi/courtier/shugenja breakdown look like", and "what kind of clothes are *they* wearing" are significant information on how much influence each delegation is likely to have, what they might be there for, and what approaches might or might not work. Best to wait until we have that information before we do anything further.

1.14 - Opening court at Shiro Matsu
It does not take you long to settle upon your outfit. You are Scorpion, and more than that you are Soshi - your place is in the shadows behind your lord, whispering advice and information to them without drawing attention to yourself. There are certain minimum requirements for any kind of courtly outfit, but within those bounds it seems safe enough to opt for the less extravagent options. Eventually you settle upon a simple kimono in the traditional style, coloured black and dark red as is appropriate for your Clan, with your Mon picked out in scarlet thread on the darker patches.

Yogo Hanzo has gone for something similar, though his attire is of a rather more severe and intimidating cut that yours. Bayushi Kimoko, by contrast, is wrapped in a beautiful red kimono decorated with golden leaves, her long black hair tied into a single tail and held in place with a series of clips decorated to the point of being minor works of art in their own right. Still, she wears her sword with confidence, and after checking you over to make sure you are appropriately attired she nods and leads the way towards the main hall.

The Matsu guards at the doors to the castle are surprisingly courteous, bowing deeply to the three of you with perfect timing and utter sincerity. Still, you cannot help but notice that they lead you straight into the Main Hall without any diversions, and without giving you a chance to relinquish your swords. Standard custom would be to have a number of junior samurai here to act as 'sword polishers', allowing you to surrender your weapons without shame. To bear weapons into the court of an ally is a grave offense... but then, so is leaving them behind when visiting an enemy. Whether the Matsu intend this as a subtle sign of warning or simply wish to knock you off your stride, it is undeniably a hostile (if understated) act.

The Hall itself is very traditionally laid out, as you would expect from the Lion Clan. The dais where the Family Daimyo sits is positioned at the far end of the hall from the doors, and a large number of cushions have been laid out in a careful pattern before it for guests to kneel on. Many of them are already occupied by Lion warriors, old veterans and promising new officers alike. Around the perimeter of the room there is a large balcony, where guests can observe the goings on of the court below, and where tradition indicates Go tables will be set up.

The Daimyo herself is not present when you arrive, but standing on the steps to the dais is an older Lion dressed in a magnificent outfit of gold and yellow shades. You recognize the open Tori arch symbol of the Ikoma emblazoned over his heart - likely, this is one of the Daimyo's assistants, perhaps her Karo or even Hatamoto. Bayushi Kimoko bows to the Ikoma, is bowed to in turn, and then leads you over to claim some of the cushions. You and Hanzo kneel down behind your lord, flanking her on either side, and resign yourselves to a significant wait.

You are the first delegation to arrive, a fact which Kimoko presumably arranged deliberately, and as such you are in a prime position to witness the other Clan representatives as they stream in and take their own seats. Doing your best to avoid outright staring, you note each group as it arrives and assess their members in turn.

The Crane are the second group to arrive, which is again to be expected, and you recognize the stern figure of Daidoji Chen bringing up the rear. That would make the slender and stylishly dressed woman at the front Doji Mariko, and the whip-thin man at her side... is that a Kakita? Judging by the way the Matsu guards around the edges of the room tense up and glare (even more so) when he enters, yes, you would surmise it is. Hanzo glances at you in a vaguely incredulous fashion when he sees the duelist, and you have to agree. Still, it is their decision.

Next comes the sole representative of the Dragon, a Bushi dressed in dark green and looking to be heavily tattooed. He walks with a kind of serene purpose to the front of the hall, where he bows before the Ikoma and then takes his seat. If the Mirumoto is discomforted by the glaring Matsu, he does not show it.

Fourth to arrive is the Unicorn Clan, with four members dressed in coordinated outfits of rich purple shades. The two men carry only their wakizashis, and judging by their demeanor and symbols you would peg them as a courtier from the Ide family and a Shugenja from the Iuchi respectively. Behind them are a pair of female Bushi, who actually appear to be identical twins, though you cannot see the Mon indicating their family of school from your current position.

Otomo Kairyu enters next, moving swiftly and only nodding briskly to the Ikoma before taking a seat near the front of the hall. Judging by the faint flash in the Lion's eyes such an attitude is not especially welcome, but perhaps the Imperial has a better chance of getting away with it. Still, he entered alone, which suggests he doesn't have much in the way of an actual retinue.

On the Otomo's heels comes the delegation from the Phoenix Clan, walking at a much more sedate pace and bowing deeply to the bard holding precedence over the court. There are only two of them, and neither is from the ruling Isawa family. Instead, if you recall your heraldry correctly, the demure looking woman in the lead is a member of the Asako, while the stern and watchful Bushi behind her is one of the famed Shiba Yojimbo.

You are momentarily surprised by the next arrival, who enters with the kind of bold confidence more appropriate to a member of the Kuge than a visiting guest, but then you are still used to thinking of the Mantis as a minor clan with no business beyond the coastline. The Yoritomo (who are at this stage the only family the Mantis lay claim to, though rumor suggests that might soon change) is dressed in elaborate finery far superior to that being worn by anyone else here. He is accompanied by a silent and severe looking woman in the yellow and black of the Wasp Clan - one of the famed Tsuruchi Archers, no doubt. They stride in together, bow low to the Lion and then take a seat near to the Crane.

Finally, the Crab arrive. The southern Clan have sent four samurai to this Court, though the two hulking Hida Bushi bringing up the rear likely mass enough to count as three warriors by any normal measure. The contrast between them and the tiny woman they are escorting is almost comical, but you know better than to underestimate one of the Yasuki for such a simple reason. The short, muscle-bound Kaiu at her side is more of a surprise, since you would not normally expect an Engineer to find themselves attached to a court delegation. Perhaps he has hidden skills?

Once everyone has arrived and claimed their seats, the Ikoma makes a small gesture towards one of the Bushi standing guard at the side of the hall. The Lion bows, then moves over and slides open a door near the rear of the hall, speaking softly to someone on the far side. The silent tension in the air is palpable - everyone takes Winter Court seriously, even a relatively non-critical one such as this.

Matsu Ketsui, family Daimyo, enters the hall at a brisk march more suited to the parade ground. Clad in gold and yellow she is a striking sight, radiating the threat of lethal violence in an almost-visible aura around her as she moves. Everyone present bows low as she moves to take her throne on the dais, to be answered with a simple nod, and after she is seated it is the Ikoma who steps forwards to address everyone.

"Welcome, honoured samurai, to Shiro Matsu. I am Ikoma Genji, karo to Matsu Ketsui-dono, and I will be coordinating the majority of the scheduled activities for the duration of this Winter Court." He says in the voice of a trained orator. "If you encounter any issues, please bring them to my attention and I will arrange a resolution. Let us begin with an exchange of gifts between guest and host."

What gift have you brought with you?

GM's note - Your delegation's gift can be almost anything reasonable, since you knew you were going to Winter Court and you've had plenty of time and resources at your disposal to find something appropriate. Remember the general trend, though - symbolic gifts are highly valued, practical gifts are an insult.

Bonus - Sirrocco devises a perfect gift
It's symbolic, so we want to figure out what to symbolize... and as a message from the Scorpion, the more levels it can function on, the better.

- Availability requirements: this is but one year, and a *relatively* minor court. Thus, nothing of particular *historical* value, unless it's one of many. (example: a gift crafted from a suit of armor of one of the many dead of the Day of Thunder might be doable. If that one was a named character, though, not so much. )

- To the Matsu: We're not inclined to like them, and they're not inclined to like us, but we're really *very* interested in getting along with them, as well as we can. We may or may not want to layer in a mild insult somewhere, but if we do, we need to make it at a level that the Matsu themselves won't notice.
...As an example, the Scorpion are known for their gardens. If we wanted to insult her, we would bring her some pretty flowers that the Matsu would never know the true uses of - it is a practical gift, and thus an insult, but they *think* it a symbolic gift, and thus to be valued. Perhaps we could instead bring such a thing as a box of potpourri, as such things keep better. Even better if it were more useful as antidote than as poison. It is a symbolic gesture - suggesting that we wish them health and long life and so forth... but it could also be seen as a practical gesture, with the implication that they are hated enough that someone might well try to poison them some time during the Winter Court, and we wish them to be prepared.

- To the Matsu, sub 2: the part that they see should symbolize... something. Some olive branch, some vague offer, some understated and deniable apology, or some acknowledgement of their own abilities.

- In general: We're kind of hated. The Matsu are *also* kind of hated. We can potentially gain points for cleverness with this, but only if it's the sort of thing that the Matsu would never suspect and, preferably, would not believe or could not be told. We really don't want to inflame their opinions of us, though.

- Otomo-sama is here, as is the Crane delegation. Both can be reliably expected to determine every meaning in our gift that is not purely Scorpion-specific. We don't want to include anything that would make us look bad to *them*.

- To the Matsu, sub 3: the Lion are quite war-oriented, but they *do* have some Akodo among their ranks, and the Akodo were known for the study of war. You can pretty much guarantee, for example, that any Akodo general who was worth anything will have read Lies - so that they might know the minds of their enemies, if for no other reason. They also do have their own courtiers, and they're not dumb. If we want to slip something past....

So... my proposal (and I'd welcome others)

[x] An artisan-crafted potpourri box, made of valuable materials from Scorpion lands - preferentially those we'd wish to export (so, iron and jade wherever we can fit them in, using the more valuable woods where wood is called for, and so forth). On the top is carved out the climactic final scene from the Second Day of Thunder. Toturi (marked with Lion clan symbolism to a degree chosen to be flattering for the Lion but not insulting to the Emperor) is the focus of the piece, dramatically striking the head off of Fu Leng. The shards of Ambition protruding from the Dark Lord's eyes are prominent. Doji Hoturi's sword, thrust into his chest, is less emphasized but still quite clearly visible. The box contains a combination of dried herbs picked out both for being pleasant-smelling (perhaps soothing) in combination, and for each being individually useful in medicine, particularly antidotes (for those who know enough to know such things).

The messages are... many.

- It is a moment of triumph for the Lion Clan. It was their Thunder who slew Fu Leng, after all, and he has top billing.
- At a deeper level, though, it is a triumph not so much for the Lion as for the Emperor himself. The Lion had cast him aside, and he led his own army then. When that time was done, he ascended to the imperial throne rather than returning to the Lion... and until he showed up on that day, the armies of the Lion clan had descended into civil war, following the death of the then-Lion Champion Matsu Tsuko. Further, Matsu Tsuko had *hated* Toturi. The fact that the person who took the Lion Clan slot among the Seven Thunders wasn't even Lion Clan at the time is something of a mark of shame for them.
- At another level, it was a triumph for Rokugan. Toturi's blow was the one that officially felled the Dark Lord, but it would not have been enough by itself, had he not also been blinded and impaled (and that's not including all of the work that so many did leading up to it). There is a definite theme of "All of Rokugan working together to allow great heroes to achieve great things" - a message that works equally well whether you are taking Toturi-as-Lion or Toturi-as-Emperor. Again, following this implication out is ever-so-subtly insulting to the Matsu because, again, they weren't exactly pulling their own weight on supporting everyone else. Mostly, the non-Toturi Lion spent this time ravaging other people's lands and then falling into civil war.
- As a refinement of the above, it's in particular picking out the advantages of having a friend in the shadows who's willing to do the ugly-but-useful work to set you up for success. This *again* works on both the Toturi-as-Lion and Toturi-as-Emperor levels, and is being picked out clearly enough that the Lion should be able to see it. It essentially says "We Scorpion may not be the most honorable, and you may not like what we do, but we are useful allies to have, and we're willing to at least open the door about being that sort of allies for you... in a way that you can't reject outright without offering insult to the Emperor."
- There's the pretty clear message of "All right-thinking Rokugani hate the Shadowlands, and we're right there with you." It's not all that subtle, but it's a good message to have in there, just on general principles.
- To the uninitiated, the contents are highlighting that we can produce things of beauty and aesthetic appeal. They really do smell nice, and there's a suggestion of the really *high quality* dried herbs as potpurri as a trade good. To those who know enough to know what these herbs are, there's all *sorts* of suggestions. We're implying (deniably) that others might hate her enough to try to poison her, but asserting that it would not be the Scorpion clan, and that we actually wish to assist her in surviving such attacks. There's the aforementioned "actually, this is a practical gift... kind of" which means that it *could* be seen as an insult... but we can easily laugh that one off because of *course* no one's going to poison the Matsu Family Diamyo. Who would think such a thing? It points out that, again, the Scorpion are useful friends to have in a number of ways (much better as friends than as enemies), and that we have a number of useful medicinal herbs for trade (...and also iron and jade and so forth).

That's most of them, anyway. I *think* that's subtle and multi-layered enough for a Scorpion gift, and it sends mostly the right messages, while offering no insults that the Matsu could prove or would be willing to acknowledge, and possibly none that they'll see. After all, on the surface, it's one of the greatest heroes of the Lion in one of his moments of greatest triumph.

1.15 - An exchange of gifts
One by one, the various representatives are called forwards to present their gifts, under the watchful eyes of the Lion Clan and Otomo Kairyu - presumably they are either exempt from the tradition or will attend to it at a different time. You watch carefully, seeking to glean some insight into the delegates through their choice of gift.

Of course, there is also some degree of distraction offered by the gift that the Lion present to each delegate in turn. Each and every time, the Matsu present their guests with a tanto, a small knife often carried by Bushi on active duty. Giving a practical weapon to a samurai would normally be a serious insult, for it implies that their lord is incapable of providing for them, but according to the Lion each knife belonged to a Matsu warrior who died to battle against the 'Greatest Enemy' within the territory of the respective Clan. This... might still be an insult, you think, though there is enough of a grey area that no one is willing to challenge your hosts over it. Assuming that anyone would be so foolish anyway.

The Crab are invited up to the dais first, and their leader is introduced as Yasuki Mia. As a gift, she presents a small sculpture the size of a fist, carved into the shape of a roaring lion. Apparently the stone used as the base material came from the Kaiu Wall, and is intended to symbolize the strength of the Lion in defending Rokugan. Matsu Ketsui looks pleased by this.

The Dragon delegate, Mirumoto Masaru, offers a small painting that he himself created. It depicts a Lioness in the middle of a charging leap, pouncing on a group of disheveled looking ronin - bandits, perhaps. The Matsu daimyo casts a faintly challenging look in your direction as the painting is displayed, and you note that the predominant colours among the ronin are red and black. The surface message seems obvious... but you cannot help but notice that one of the ronin has a spear braced against a rock and aimed at the Lioness' heart.

The gift of the Unicorn is not a material item. Instead, their ambassador Ide Taka offers the services of his retainer, Utaku Sui, to train the Daimyo's sons in the heavy cavalry warfare favoured by his Clan. It is a bold move, especially when a caveat is attached that the boys will only be allowed to retain their Unicorn-bred steeds if they prove worthy of them, and you can hear numerous fans clicking open around the hall as courtiers and Bushi alike conceal their shock. Matsu Ketsui merely smiles and thanks the Unicorn for their gift, however, and you make a mental note - it seems that framing the offer as a challenge of martial skill for her family to overcome was sufficient to win approval.

It is at this point that Ikoma Genji summons the Scorpion to the dais. Kimoko rises, and you go with her, holding your Clan's gift in a careful grasp. The box is beautifully made, and the decoration in the lid is truly superb, though you do notice the Crab twitch slightly when they catch sight of the small amounts of Jade worked into the design. Kimoko bows low to the daimyo, and you mimic her as best you can with your arms full.

"Honoured Host, we would like to present you with this selection of herbs and spices from the gardens of the Shosuro family." Kimoko says smoothly. "Let it be a symbol of all that the Lion fought to protect, for without the sacrifices of the Matsu family there would be no place to grow such things in the desolate wasteland our beloved homeland would become."

For all her reputed temper and fiery spirit, Matsu Ketsui is too disciplined and traditionalist to allow her feelings to register in her expression or voice. She looks over the box, her gaze lingering on the depiction of Toturi that dominates the decorations on the lid. "A most generous gift, but one I cannot in good conscience accept. The Lion do not defend Rokugan because we desire reward, but because it is our sworn duty."

"None can question the motivations of the Lion Clan in this matter - the strength of your dedication to duty is well known to all." Kimoko replies, moving through the traditional forms of offer and refusal. "Please, accept this gift as freely given."

"Your words are undeniable, yet surely such plants would be of more use in restoring your own lands." The Daimyo says, the slightest hint of a barb behind her words. "I had heard that the gardens of the Shosuro sustained significant damage recently."

Kimoko smiles like a shark. "Not at all, Matsu-sama. The Shosuro herbalists are quite skilled, and I have been assured that their gardens are in full health once again. These samples come from our year's surplus."

The Matsu pauses at that, trying to read the truth behind your words, but Kimoko has an expression as smooth as the mask she wears and you don't know enough to determine the truth of your leader's statement. After a moment's hesitation, the daimyo inclines her head. "In which case we thank you for your gift, and will be sure to display it prominently, where the message it bears can be freely observed."

As the daimyo and your superior bow to each other, you concern yourself with handing over the gift to the low-ranking samurai who moves forwards to take it. That done, you return to your positions, taking a moment to observe the reactions of your fellow delegates. Otomo Kairyu clearly understood the messages there, and judging by the gleam in his eye he fully approves. Likewise, the Doji and Kakita representatives are hiding pleased smiles behind their fans, and while the Yasuki is too disciplined to reveal much the whole Crab delegation practically radiates amusement. Everyone else appears largely bland, though you do note that the Phoenix courtier appears somewhat concerned.

From there, the exchange of gifts moves on to the Mantis, represented by Yoritomo Harike, who presents a golden spyglass much like the ones used by their sailors to view distant sights. You suspect there might be an insult of some sort there, but the courtier is smooth enough to avoid any trouble and the eyeglass is beautifully decorated and thus can pass as a work of art rather than anything practical. Still, you cannot help but notice the way that the Wasp Clan Yojimbo looks quietly pleased by this, and the sight reminder you of the vicious grudge the minor clan bears against the Lion... and the Scorpion.

Finally, the Crane are called up... and bring with them nothing at all. There is considerable tension in the hall as Doji Mariko presses her forehead to the ground before the Matsu and offers her sincere apologies for the lack of a gift. Apparently the Crane lands are currently in too poor a state to offer anything worthy of being presented to the honourable Matsu family, and they did not wish to offer insult by bringing something substandard. Mariko even mentions a few places that the Crane lands that she would normally search for such a gift, each of which is unfortunately still badly damaged from the war... and, if you remember correctly, in such a state because of particularly vicious Lion attacks.

You half suspect that you could cut the air with your blade if you were to draw it now, such is the tension. Doji Mariko's excuse seems perfectly honest and sincere, and it is well known that the Crane lands were indeed rather badly damaged, but it would not exactly be difficult to interpret the Crane's actions as a rather severe insult. Eventually, though, Matsu Ketsui accepts the excuse with a sharp nod, and the Crane return to their seats.

"Honoured guests, we thank you for your patience." Ikoma Genji says in a loud voice, stepping forwards to smooth over the sudden tension. "For the next two hours, I shall be available to consult with any of you about the upcoming schedule, after which I will announce the itinerary. In the mean time, please, feel free to mingle and converse with one another."
