Under this arrangement, you'd be paid in Alanyivan currency, while expected to pay a similar amount to the Edinpikes. Given that you have no other currency on you, this means you're going to pay the Edinpikes in Oskarian currency. The merchant has agreed to pay you an equivalent amount in the currency they have available, so in theory it should be a cash neutral transaction, save for the fact that you purchased the Edinpikes' services.

Alright, I want to hit this loud and fast and to do so with as much muscle as we can hire.

I have no idea what their exact angle might be, but if nothing else us sitting on a big pile of Alanyivan currency while running around accusing other people of conspiring with foreign enemies is a huge poison pill. I suppose I'd be okay-ish with hiring the Edinpikes on our own dime, but under no circumstances should we take the shady merchant's offer and really I don't trust the Edinpikes 100% either.

Muddying the waters. If it's too good to be true...
Also this maybe gets the Kingsmen to 'back' the idea of foreign takeover via holding the foreign currency, and making the deal, if not else, seems like a way to low-key weaken Oskaria's currency via diluting it with foreign coin. Then once no one is using Osakrian-minted coinage regularly, it means foreign interests can do all kinds of unpleasant financial attacks, or otherwise make Oskaria into a puppet state.

And yet if we don't, then we got some musket-men that could decide to support the guard against our 'arrest', which is pretty clever.
Could we renegotiate it to not involve foreign currency?
Though they might want the coup to fail...

Hiring them on our own dime and not touching a bunch of toxic foreign currency, then ordering them off on some wild goose chase far away from the action is probably the best course of action. I'd support that if we could pull it off.

The whole payment scheme with the Edinpikes raises red flags with me. Even if they were just trying to get some of the local currency due to them having just got here a 1 to 1 exchange is definitely off while they are also getting work to do.

So... we have an inner-city merchant... flush with foreign currency... who knows who we are. This isn't the sort of offer you make to just anyone, after all. Yeah... I suspect that this is them quietly arranging to have us stabbed in the back once they figure out who we're going for.

On the bright side, we have a guy who can brew up pallative potions for the plague... which means that we can afford enough to make sure that Cornag himself makes it through.

The major blocs we haven't investigated are the nobility, the inner city clergy, and the merchants. We know the nobility is staying inside to avoid the plague, but we have no information on their forces or if any of them have been turned. If whole families are hanging out in their houses at all times, then it'll be difficult to sneak in and investigate. I guess Tekla could approach while selling his potion and try to turn some servants that way. We know nothing about inner city clergy, except that they only sent minimal aid to help the outer city, so they could go either way. If they're that snooty they probably won't want to deal with Cormag, who's anti-corruption and also an orc, so we'd need Kerrie to sneak in again to dig stuff up. The merchants have little muscle on their own, but we know at least one merchant is corrupt and if enough of them are they could just hire all the adventurers and beat us that way. Tekla might try to feel them out while selling his potion.

We could dig into the governor, but the fact that the Guard doesn't like him is probably enough to tell where his loyalties are. The streets might be important, but they're busy being sick. The artisans aren't politically inclined.

Unfortunately, all this isn't quite as important as the fact that we're out of time. Kerrie walked off with a whole desk of physical documents from the Guard, so they'll step up security and probably move up their timetable. That merchant also knew to approach us with his shady merc offer, so at least one person's made us. If we don't strike now they'll get us first.

[X] [Approach] Continue quietly investigating.

Arresting half the traitors now means the other half will be far harder to catch.
