Hope will never die : a Fire Emblem Awakening quest

Chapter 1-8: Ominous exchange (autumn 2619)
[x] Ask him about Nah and Morgan's departure and the dreams
[x] Introduce her. Gregor seems the type appreciate the direct approach. Just take Severa and ask him to teach her. If he won't do it for free, see if you can convince Father to pay him to do it.

[x] Ask him about Nah and Morgan's departure and the dreams

You hesitate, briefly taking your mind out of the game.

"Uncle Robin?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask you something?"

His face is blank as he stares at you, not letting anything transpire. It's as if he's analyzing you, trying to guess what you're about to say. He finally directs his attention on the board game once again, capturing one of your pieces.

"Go ahead."
"Why did Nah and Morgan had to leave?"

His mask is still on, his voice neutral. Too neutral, you think. And you don't like that he doesn't look at you when answering.

"I believed some change could do them some good. A city can be a stressful place to live in."

But that can't be the whole truth, can it? What about the...

"Is it about their nightmares?"
Kill her.
Robin finally looks up, looking curious.

"You know about those?"
"Yeah" you nod. "Nah talked to me about it a little, just before leaving. Something about a dragon?"
It would be easy. You have that knife in your sleeve. Stab her heart. She will never see it coming.
The tactician tenses, his posture subtly shifting, before he takes a deep breath, forcing himself to relax. You hesitate. Was you knowing that surprising?

"I see. Well, it's true that things haven't been easy for the both of them. I thought a new place to live might help."
"Nah also thought you had bad dreams too. Is that true?"
No-one would suspect you. You could spin any tale you'd want, Chrom would still trust you.
Robin lifts up an arm to massage his temples. Is he having a headache?

"Ah, so Nah noticed. I had hoped she wouldn't."

The way his gaze drifted while saying that makes you wonder if those words were intended for you, or if he simply was talking to himself. You had always heard rumours about your father's best friend, calling him a bit odd. You never thought much of it - he seemed normal enough to you, if a bit distant - but right now, you wonder. Still, he quickly seems to refocus.

"It is true that my position comes with a good amount of stress, and that can lead to some sleep difficulties. Still, there's no need to worry about me. As for my daughters..." He seems to hesitate. "Manakete are pretty rare, you know. And there are some cults who believe the blood of dragons carry magical properties. I feared that having them in plain sight in Ylisstol, when they are so young, could lead to problems. So I sent them in a safe place. Nowi is looking after them, and I still visit as often as I can, but I believe it is better this way."

You frown, trying to integrate that new information. Some people would kill Nah and Morgan for their blood? That's horrible!

"But then, what about the dreams?"
It would be a mercy to kill her now, you know. Unless you want to see what I'll do to her once I'm here?
Robin only shrugs, looking back at the game-board.

"Something to do with their manakete nature, I suppose. I wouldn't know. Oh, and I believe this is checkmate."

You frown, realizing he is right. Usually, that's the point where you ask for a rematch, but after what he just told you, you're no longer in the mood.

"Is there... is there anything I can do to help?"

Your godsfather seems a bit taken aback by your question, before his face starts to soften, allowing himself a small smile.

"You really care about Nah and Morgan, do you, Lucina?" You nod hesitantly. "Right now... right now you don't need to do anything. That is the job of us adults. But if one day I'm not around... Yes, I think I would like it to know you're looking after them."

You feel a pang of fear griping your heart. Why would he talk about not being around? You know, you just know he isn't telling you everything, but you don't think you have any way to get him to say more. So the only thing you do then is...

"All right. I will."
"So much like your father. Very well, I think this is enough for today. I'll see you soon, princess!"
Don't think you can protect her forever, Robin. She soon will be dead, like everyone else you know. And there is nothing you can do about it.

You learned more about what happened with Nah and Morgan (but what was true?)
Option unlocked : so you want to learn about tactics?

[x] Introduce her. Gregor seems the type appreciate the direct approach. Just take Severa and ask him to teach her. If he won't do it for free, see if you can convince Father to pay him to do it.

You don't hesitate for long. If this is what Severa wants, then you don't have any right to question it. Asking you for your help was apparently pretty hard for her to do, stalling would be doing her a disservice at this point.

"Okay. Follow me then!"
"Wha-what? Right now?"

Severa's determination seems to falter, but you'd hear none of it.

"Of course! The sooner you start, the better you can become!"

You almost drag her through the palace halls, toward the place where you think you have the most chances to find Gregor at this hour. While he doesn't spend all - or even most - of his time in the palace itself, if memory served you right, this was about the end of Brady's violin repetition. And you knew that his father wouldn't miss them for anything in the world. You're quickly proven right when you see the burly mercenary leaving the auditorium, a content expression on his face.

"Sir Gregor!"

He turns around to greet you, his usual smile widening when he sees you two approaching.

"Oh! If it isn't young princess and her friend! If little girls wanting to hear Brady, Gregor is afraid it is over now. Maybe tomorrow, yes?"
"Actually, we wanted to speak to you."

The mercenary scratches his head, visibly confused.

"That so? Gregor not sure what he can do to help young ladies. Will do best anyway, of course!"

You wait to see if Severa wants to take the lead, but her closed expression and her eyes fixed on her shoes tell you that she isn't quite ready to make that jump. Well, you suppose, that's what she has you for.

"Sir Gregor, my friend Severa has shown an interest in learning how to use a sword. We would be extremely grateful if you were to take her as your pupil."
"Oh oh?"

Gregor rubs his shin, before kneeling in front of Severa, bringing his eyes to her level.

"Hmm. Little girl is Cordelia's daughter, yes?"

That remark is enough to snap out Severa of her timidity, and she immediately scowl at the mercenary, who fortunately doesn't seem to take offense - you're not sure he ever does.

"What does my mother have to do with anything?!"
"Nothing, nothing! Gregor just wanted to make sure. Lots of kids running around, hard to remember all. So, already learned a bit about swords, or is Gregor starting from scratch?"

She hesitates a bit before answering, with a bashful expression.

"Well... I asked my dad to show me a couple of things these last weeks. He told me it wasn't exactly his speciality, but he helped."

That comes as a surprise to you. You hadn't realized Severa already decided to take some steps toward her new goal. Clearly she was quite serious about all this.

"Ah, yes. Stahl not bad, but not a swordsman first, yes. Still, good Severa already know a few things, makes it easier for Gregor! Still curious, though, why ask Gregor? Lots of good fighters around, why looking for simple mercenary?"

You admit, you were a bit curious to know that as well. Severa hesitates a bit before answering.

"The others... the others know my mother too well. I don't want to be constantly compared to her, and I thought, you were the one who would care the less about that." She let out a deep breath, before grinning. "Also I saw you knock Lon'qu flat on his ass a few weeks ago."
"Ah! Young Lon'qu very good, but still a bit green! Not as vicious as Gregor, true! Okay, Gregor will see if can teach Severa, yes? Have to warn, though, swellest of swords, but hard teacher, oh oh!"
"I'd be disappointed if you weren't."

You finally part way with the older man, deciding to walk a bit with your friend, who now has a triumphant expression plastered on her face. You're glad to see her in such high spirits, rather than angry at the world. You can't claim to understand her all that well, but even you realize she went through rather hard times, having her smile is a welcome change of pace.

"Hey, Lucina? Thanks for the help."
"You're very welcome. I didn't do much, though."

You feel like the air between you two is clean once again. Until Severa's next mood swing, at least.

Gregor is now tutoring Severa on swordsplay
Lucina and Severa's relations are no longer strained

Summer eventually ends, finding you more restless than ever. You learned so much over this past year, yet you have the feeling you barely scratched the surface of what you can learn. (pick seven actions, not including the locked ones)

[X] Sword training (Ylissean royal style) (LOCKED)
[X] History and customs of Ylisse (LOCKED)
[X] Etiquette lessons (LOCKED)

[] Ask for new teachers
: you don't have anything against lady Armelle and sir Ogham, really, you don't. But those tutors, appointed in your parents absence, have trouble keeping your attention. Maybe you could ask if someone else would be available to teach you?

[] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons : without Say'ri around, the Feroxi champion is the only one you can turn to who's around on a semi-regular basis. Only problem is, you don't think he likes you all that much...

[] Training from Hell - Frederick edition : you must be utterly insane for even considering it. Your previous lessons with the knight have been hell, and now that they are over, you would come back for more? Yet the idea is firmly rooted in your mind...

[] Meditate and help at Naga's shrine : you found the practice useful after long days of training. You like the atmosphere of the place, and it is also a chance to occasionally help Libra, which is something you enjoy.

[] The Healer Princess : Libra have come to appreciate your help at the temple, and wonders if you would be willing to accompany him during his rounds in the city itself. He does warn you that this might be a rather exhausting task, but you are getting used to those, at this point.

[] So you want to learn about tactics? : your string of defeats against Robin was expected, but it doesn't mean it wasn't vexing. If you want to pay him back one of these days, you'll need to study his field... and who'd be better suited to teach you than the man himself?

[] Spend time in the library : your first foray in Ylisstol's library had been a fascinating experience, and you suspect there is still a lot more you can learn from its tomes. Who knows how much knowledge you can still dig up from it?
  • [] Any specific topic in mind? (no extra action)
[] Spend time in the stables : between your mother and Cherche's lessons, you have become more eager to learn about the best ways to care about animals these last weeks. And what better way to learn than to spend time with them? Well, it would be pretty strenuous, probably.

[] Call of the Sky : practice makes perfect. In one year, you became pretty familiar with flying mounts, now the only thing left to do is keep training in that discipline. Fortunately, you were born in the right family for that.

[] Spear lessons with Cordelia : your flying lessons went pretty well, but you admit, you'd be interested to learn more about the martial aspect of aerial combat, something Cynthia showed little taste for until now. But you get the feeling aunt Cordelia would be more than happy to help in this matter.

[] Explore Ylisstol : up until now, your childhood was spent mostly inside the palace, with the very occasional excursion outside. But you get the feeling that growing in such a sheltered environment might lead to problems down the line. Getting to know your own city seems like a good first step toward understanding Ylisseans.

[] Double down on your lessons : studying is one thing, but things worth doing are worth doing well.
  • [] Sword training (Ylissean royal style)
  • [] History and customs of Ylisse
  • [] Etiquette lessons
[] Spend time with the other children : you try to keep in touch with everyone still in Ylisstol, but your busy schedule often leaves you with less time than you'd like. Still, your friends are worth the effort, you think. Also, since Miriel came back from her trip, Laurent is once more in Ylisstol. (note : you can pick two friends for one action. Specify if you want to do something in particular)
  • [] Owain
  • [] Severa
  • [] Kjelle
  • [] Brady
  • [] Yarne
  • [] Noire
  • [] Laurent
  • [] Cynthia

[] Write-in : thinking hard about it, maybe there's something else you could do?

[] Special - slack off : some of these lessons are... hard to bear. Surely no-one would mind if you were to take it easy on some of them? Or even miss them? (doesn't take a choice, but instead gives one extra choice or each lesson you pick with this option.)

  • [] Check on Severa's progress : you're pretty curious to know how Severa is doing with Gregor. Unfortunately, her lessons are scheduled at the same time of some of your own studies, meaning that to satiate your curiosity, you'd have to miss a class...

I have no idea how long I'll manage to maintain that writing pace. I expected maybe two updates a week when I started...

We are doing this now, so we can have a higher score so we can slack off more later.

[X] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons : without Say'ri around, the Feroxi champion is the only one you can turn to who's around on a semi-regular basis. Only problem is, you don't think he likes you all that much...

We're going to sword dammit, and we need a teacher for this, we have to do it eventually, and the sooner the better. Same as the new teachers above really.

[X] Training from Hell - Frederick edition : you must be utterly insane for even considering it. Your previous lessons with the knight have been hell, and now that they are over, you would come back for more? Yet the idea is firmly rooted in your mind...

As long as we don't turn into a masochist over it, its good training.

I think one of these two would be good, but I'm not sure which.

We need this, I just hope it doesn't keep costing Robin Will power.

Anyone have anything special in mind? Looking up our grandfather might be interesting. Or reading up on historical battles for bonus to Tactics?

[] Spend time in the stables : between your mother and Cherche's lessons, you have become more eager to learn about the best ways to care about animals these last weeks. And what better way to learn than to spend time with them? Well, it would be pretty strenuous, probably.

[] Call of the Sky : practice makes perfect. In one year, you became pretty familiar with flying mounts, now the only thing left to do is keep training in that discipline. Fortunately, you were born in the right family for that.

Eh. Again, I want Wyverns if anything.

[] Spear lessons with Cordelia : your flying lessons went pretty well, but you admit, you'd be interested to learn more about the martial aspect of aerial combat, something Cynthia showed little taste for until now. But you get the feeling aunt Cordelia would be more than happy to help in this matter.

This could be interesting though.

Potential avenues of Study:

[X] Spend time in the library.
- [X] Read some fiction , myths, fairy tales, that sort of thing. Some good old recreational entertaiment never hurt anyone, right?
- [X] Study taguel. You haven't seen any other then Yarne and his mother, Panne. What happened to them?
- [X] Study manakete. You know they were really, really rare. You could learn more about Nah's species. Maybe there's a reason in here why Robin sent them away?
- [X] Study Arithmetic. Numbers are fairly important in the world, you think. Useful for many different things.
- [X] Study magic systems. They are wide and varied, you here. Most Ylissean mages practice the elements, like your Uncle Ricken, or healing, like Libra. Plegians, like Tharja, Noire's mother, practice a much more broad form of magic involving curses. Curses...
- [X] Study Ylisse. How did your country come to be anyway? Why's your family on the throne? What's the makeup of your territitory? Why did they name the country Ylisse and the city Ylisstol?!
- [X] Study Ragna Ferox. It's the least you could do, after they sacrificed so much against Valm. It snows over there right?

Better choice. Libra is a cool dude.

Hey Macros, Panne is married to Frederick right? Who did Ricken get hitched with? Maybe no one.

I suggest against specializing in too many weapons seeing as Falchion is gonna end up our bread and butter we're better off mastering the various sword styles and perhaps magic later on rather than becoming a confused generalist that's bad at everything.

And I wanted to double down on swords as well.

Lots of Library in Space's, but it seems to be fairly eclectic with mostly looking into the intro into a bunch of things. imagine the last two are probably folded under history, although we might not have learned about those things in specific. I'm... well, that first one looks amazing honestly. I'm really hoping we stumble across something like our grandfather's journal that he hid somewhere unexpected or maybe some real medieval fairy tales. Learning about Tiki and our ancestor might fit as well.

For some reason I'm remembering something about a female bow lord that ended up banging her brother, but was that Marth's FE or was that just FE4... again.

So, where are we right now?

These options are in the lead, the first three even being pretty unanimous. Which leaves us three choices, and we currently have six options with three votes each :

[X] Meditate and help at Naga's shrine
[X] Spear lessons with Cordelia
[X] Call of the Sky
[X] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons
[X] Ask for new teachers
[X] Spend time in the library

I'll wait half a day to see if things are shaken up a bit. If nothing changes, Lucina will pick herself the options, depending of her natural inclinations.

Wait, where did she find that hat?

You know, it's becoming more and more apparent that patience isn't my strong suit. So, since most of the next update is already written, Lucina is being left to her own devices for the tied choices. Among the six options, she will subsequently pick :

[X] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons : she likes swords.
[X] Call of the Sky : family time + new-found appreciation for flying.
[X] Meditate and help at Naga's shrine : it kind of become her relaxation time.

Your sword lessons remain the highlight of most of your days. You growing up, slow as it might be, and Frederick's intensive training means that your body is able to handle the physical demands of the royal style better than before. As such, you feel yourself improving by day under the approving gaze of your father.

You wish you'd do as well in your other lessons, but so far, they have become a form of routine. You do what is expected of you, but feel no need to put the same extra effort that you make in your other lessons.

Skill : swords increased to D+
Skill : Ylissean royal style increased to D

[X] Training from Hell - Frederick edition

After a long hesitation, you finally steel yourself. While Frederick's lessons are anything but pleasant, you feel like stopping them now would be akin to giving up. And you really, really don't like that. So when you go ask Frederick to resume your training sessions, you're actually pleased by his nod of approval. Still, you suspect that it doesn't mean he's going to go easy on you. That, or his "easy" standards are rather unique. You'd be right. This goes about as well as expected ; that is to say, this is plain atrocious. His "light jogs" leave you gaping for air. His "few push ups" give you the feeling that your arms are about to fall off. And at this point, he usually decides that this is enough for a warm-up, and that it is time to begin the training proper. More often than not, it is only pure willpower that keeps you going.

Things take a turn for the better when a new person shows up to watch those lessons. You don't know if she's her because Frederick asked for her, of if your parents put her up to it out of concern, but when aunt Lissa greets you alongside your instructor, you are pretty surprised. Still, you become quickly grateful for her presence ; she knows the best ways for you to recuperate between two exercises, always have some healing salves ready when you take an unfortunate tumble, and doesn't hesitate to reign in the knight when she feels he's going overboard. She also displays a good deal of knowledge on his personal weak points, and does not hesitate to tease him mercilessly when she thinks it is needed. You have to admit, seeing the stern guardian so easily flustered by the princess' behaviour is a sight to behold, and you take a few notes about which button to press with him... just in case.

When you ask your uncle Robin to teach you about strategy and tactics, he seems a bit surprised, but say he'll think about it. The very next day, a messenger announces you that Ylisse's Grandmaster is waiting for your presence in the study room. Indeed, you find your godsfather with a pile of books and maps, looking thoughtful, but determined. Your lessons start immediately, beginning with studies of the two wars he personally fought in. There is... a lot of informations to learn ; apparently, waging war involves a lot more than swinging swords and throwing yourself at the enemy.
Trying to forge another weapon against me, Robin? First Morgan, now this girl? You must be truly desperate.
You prove to be a diligent student, however. It helps that the examples he chose are the ones you wanted to know more about for a long time, and knowing most of the actors makes it easy to pay attention. Through dispassionate and clinical texts, you get to learn about the actions of your father, of the Mad King or of the Conqueror. While the intricacies of Robin's tactics are still way over your head, you think you begin to have a clearer picture of what warfare looks like.

During one of those study session, you end starring at several pages of undecipherable gibberish – at least, to your eyes. When you ask Robin about that, he realizes his mistake ; apparently, he let one of his magic tomes slip through the manuals he intended for you. You give the book a second glance ; this is actually the first time you have the chance to see one from up close. Still, you quickly refocus on your lessons.

[X] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons

While you've been putting it off those last months, you had always intended to seek out Lon'qu. The style that Say'ri used left you with a strong impression, and you are decided to eventually learn it. Still, your first contact with the swordmaster goes poorly. You barely have time to make your demand that he utters a definitive"no" before storming off. That... was not the answer you expected.

Still, you're nothing if not stubborn. For a week, you keep ambushing him with requests, each being met with the same refusal. Damn, he's stubborn too. At this point, you decide to take a page of Robin's book ; if a first approach proves to be inefficient, you need to switch tactics. The next time the Feroxi swordmaster enters the courtyard to practice his forms, he finds you waiting for him. You actually do not talk, remaining at a respectful distance. With a grunt, he decides to not pay you any attention, and starts going through his stances. You simply watch.

He finds you there too the next day, and the day after that. After a week of observation, you decide to make it to the next step, and start mimicking his form. It's far from ideal ; you don't know what you are doing most of the time, simply having the basic teachings of Say'ri as a reference. Yet, you figure that if you keep watching, you might figure it out eventually. Day after day, you keep observing and trying to replicate his moves, with limited success.

Then one day he actually corrects you. It's just a simple instruction about straightening your arm, barked in a gruff tone, but you take it as a personal victory as you comply. With time, those advices become more frequent, and while he still maintains some distance toward you, you finally begin to actually learn instead of improvising.

[X] Call of the Sky

Your previous flying lessons have awakened a want. You feel more and more at ease in the sky, something you really didn't expect at first. Perhaps you're more your mother's daughter than you thought. Nonetheless, you take turn with Cynthia flying Titania, trying to reproduce the aerial manoeuvers your mother shows you, enjoying the sensation of freedom you get when in the air.

When not flying, the three of you relax by taking care of the palace's pegasi. Your mother uses that time to tell you tales of her experiences with the Shepherds, be it in Regna Ferox, Plegia or Valm. You wonder if you'll have the chance to see those countries one day too – hopefully not in the middle of a war. For now, though, you're content enough with these moments surrounded by your family.

Characteristic : dexterity raised to C
Skill : riding (pegasi) raised to D+
Skill : aerial combat raised to E+
Skill : animal care (pegasi) raised to D
Option unlock : train with pegasus knights novices

Special event : an unexpected gift

Your mother comes to find you one morning, asking you to follow her, a knowing smile on her face. Mildly surprised, you walk with her to the stables, not quite knowing what to expect ; she isn't usually so mysterious, though you learned she do love dramatic reveals – probably something she picked up while reading novels. As she let you go past her, you suddenly see what exactly is the surprise : in one of the box stand a young, but fierce-looking blue wyvern.

As you ask your mother for explanations, she tells you she kept in touch with Cherche by exchanging letters, and pointed out the zealous attention you spent on the book the wyvern-knight left you, as well as your new-found interest in flying lessons. Virion's retainer was able to find a wyvern young enough to be trained, though most of that will be your responsibility, should you be willing. You first job, as her new partner, would be to find her a name...

[] name your wyvern

New best friend. Move aside Cynthia.

Reasoning: Short names are good so that commands can be given quickly.

Anyway, fuck yeah, Wyvernis ours!

I also realized something this morning, when Robin hits 0 will, whether that's E- or losing it all I don't know, Chrom will probably die. Meaning we only have so much time to learn the Royal style. At least enough of it that we can create an offshoot of it.

I mean that's true for others as well, but they will be a bit more random.

So that means we need to grind on Chrom and Robin while their here?

I didn't vote for Call of the Sky. I wonder what got cut out.

Lon'qu, still gynophobic.

Logistics skill learned. Hopefully the library action is still on the table.

A lot of new opportunities. Something to consider.

So.....I tried to make a name and all of them sounded stupid. For example, Overlord Defying-Death-With-Wings. xD
