[X] The Marbles. (Low and warm, glass and metal rolling across wood, scrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-)
Lots of options here: roll them around, hold them and hit them together, cup some in your hands and shake, and probably more I'm not thinking of.
[X] Little Brass Gear Cube. (You genuinely have no idea what this is, but you know what sound gears make.)
Gears sound nice.
Alternatively, there's nothing saying we each can only take one thing, is there? So stuff like putting a playing card on top of the cup to act as a drum is feasible, as is putting marbles in the cup.
Cardin Winchester, the leader of the team with your best friend's boyfriend; a probable member of the Human Defense League; and someone who- despite having a functionally photographic memory, courtesy of the Transistor- you don't really remember the name or face of; is complimenting you with such honesty that it's getting your chest a little tight.
There is a certain... "convenience" when a villain is thoroughly wretched in all aspects. It becomes so much simpler to shame, deride, and dismiss them as being a monster who you can focus all your efforts into soundly defeating, without having to consider any other options.
But when there's a glimmer of merit or sympathy, when you're forced to consider the possibility that they're a "real person", everything gets so much more complicated. Is there any way to convince them to be better? What's the balance between avoiding alienation and not tolerating despicable behavior? ...And if he's somehow convinced that he's "just a normal guy" who is blissfully unaware that his faults are actually faults, well, what does that say about the rest of us?
Lords Among the Ashes. A good story, mostly a great one, although as best I can recall it the story escalated just slightly faster than the writer's (admittedly very high) ability to handle it. It's been a while since I read it, though.
@Prok I want to take a moment to express in my awkward, not great with words way, that this quest is always worth the wait. That when I woke up this morning and saw the notification in my email, I knew exactly what I was doing with my lunch break at work. Because you write consistently great stuff, and I'm always happy to see more of it.
I also wanted to say, and I think I've said it before, that us having to wait is fine. This quest, excellent as it is, doesn't pay your bills, take care of your family or your health, or pass your classes. And those things matter more for your wellbeing than our entertainment.
But, if validation from pseudonymous names on the internet can help, then I'm happy to provide it.
[X] The Rosary. (Tiny little tandem staccato beats, tiktiktiktiktiktik-)
[X] The Little Metal Cup. (You should probably leave this to Weiss, she has better nails to tinktatinktatink against this thing.)
[X] Moleskin Diary and Cards. (Deep layered thumps and scritches, the sound of 52 cards and 150 pages moving in tandem.)
[X] Little Brass Gear Cube. (You genuinely have no idea what this is, but you know what sound gears make.)
[X] Root Vegetables. (Snap! Crunch!! But you can only use each one once. Who ever heard of an instrument you can only use once?)
Welcome back, Prok.
Funny thing is, just a day or so before the update I considered posting another link to Transistor page on Good Old Games since it was 80% off on the Summer Sale, but I ultimately decided not to. Summer Sale is over now, so anyone interested will have to either buy it at full price, wait for the next sale, or pick it up on Steam since the summer sale there is still ongoing.

Well, okay, their names are Janus and Anti-Janus, because, context; there was an old tumblr post a hot minute ago claiming that the Romans used to name twins the Roman equivalent of Steve and Not Steve, and obviously, that's bullshit, there's no record of any stringent naming convention besides naming the eldest son. However, I, in my infinite skill as an internet funnyman, decided to just fucking go with it and name his uncles Janus and Not Janus, which everyone shortens to Janus.
And yes, they are also named after the two-headed God of doorways and passages. I'm sure neither this nor they will ever become relevant as anything other than background characters.
Halfway through the chapter, I asked myself how to make Cardin an interesting character. I won't lie- 'absolute zenith gymbro vibes' was not high on the list, but the moment I fucked with it, I realised I have never been more objectively correct in my life.
I am a pretty consistent lurker, but, after reading your Author's Note, felt the need to comment and participate simply to try and hand you the dopamine all authors crave.
With no exaggeration, this is my favorite quest I've followed of all time. It's engaging, it's got depth, I love the way you write character interactions and the clear thought you put into them. More than many quests and even fics I've read in the past, this most often feels like a window into a consistent world rather than an artifice of human make. Literally every time I've gotten the notification for Hold It In, I have immediately dropped what I was doing to read through it and I have reread this quest no less than 3 times.
Thank you so much for writing this, and sorry that I've lurked on it for literally years without participating or handing you the author dopamine.

Hey, fun fact, I started therapy between the last update and this one, and did you know that most people don't violently dissociate to protect themselves emotionally when they receive praise?

As with many people and experiences in this story, Cardin is somewhat based on actual racists I know (and have long since talked some sense into, don't worry, they're living much happier, less hateful lives now), just as Dove is based on some other actual racists I've seen (and fed his own teeth, don't worry, he's very much in prison for plastering lampposts with EDL propaganda now)
There's all types out there, and acting otherwise is just harmful to everyone.

Sometimes I wonder if your efforts actually cause a noticeable tick in Transistor sales at this point, and I wonder if the devs are just mildly confused by it. I know they don't, and they aren't, but it does make me chuckle to myself every now and then.
Anyway, the little brass cube has nearly twice as many votes as the next in line, the marbles, so the winner seems fairly obvious at this point- voting is closed, and update will be up-
... You know what? Fuck it. Update's up on Sunday. I've got a rhythm to get back into.

Really happy to see this come back around and to hear you're doing better. I love this quest.

Edit: Ninja'd by the author in question. Thanks for opening my eyes to Zenith Gymbro Cardin - this new side to his character shall live in my mind rent free.
I don't even get notifications from this forum anymore and yet the only times I check it, you've posted an update that very same week.
Clearly this story is the only thing keeping me here.

I'm liking music class. I think I have a vague idea of where Port is going but I'm excited to see how it turns out.
And now I'm thinking of The Sound of Music but with Port replacing Maria but absolutely nothing else changing. I'm betting he's got that deep baritone.
Edit: vote closed 3hrs ago, I will forever live with my shame, see y'all on Sunday.
Prok, thank you for this quest. I know I have said it before, and I will say it again. This quest introduced me to new music which has lead to friends and memories I will cherish.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Let's have some fun with all the unique sounds we'll be able to make!
I now can't get the image of Jaune using projected keyboards like Lelouch (minus crossing his arms for some reason) to erect barriers at precise moments.
All the while The Transcistor is acting as an artillery cannon
In other news, my computer mouse has broken, and my replacement arrives Monday- as a result, the update will be delayed by a day or two at most, hopefully.
