New Good Seed and Omake Rule Updates
Good Seed and Omake Spreadsheet Rules:

Firstly, if you have questions about Good Seeds and the like please read here. If that doesn't answer your question please ping me in thread, or on Discord.

If you write a new Good Seed, or write an omake, please update the spreadsheet if you have access.

If you do not have access, please ping a collaborator (Swordomatic, Alectai, Quest, TehChron, Insane-Not-Crazy, Humbaba, ReaderOfFate, Kaboomatic, no., BungieONI) letting them know what you want and they will update the spreadsheet here. To gain access, you will need a gmail account of some kind. Throwaway emails are fine (I'm using one for the spreadsheet), but to gain access it's as simple as sending me either your email via PM, via DM in Discord, or just in Discord's #spreadsheet-requests channel.

This is mandatory. If a Good Seed does not record their omake by pinging collabs (or just requesting access and editing things themselves - this is the preferred option), I won't give out awards. If a new Good Seed is not recorded here, they won't advance. By doing this it makes the whole thing manageable for me - it's gotten pretty unwieldy!

Omake Writer Instructions:

There are four fields you need to fill out.

Omake Link, which is just a link to your first omake for the turn. This makes it easier for me to read them as I do the update - without this it's tough to know off the bat which omake were written this turn, and to properly

Requested Bonus, which is your requested bonus for your omake. You can leave it up to me if you like. You can see more info in the Good Seed infopost here.

Cultivation Aims. For those following unorthodox paths - higher than 9th Heavenstage or later than 7th Dao Pillar paths. Please put in what you are aiming for before you break through. I have left it as 'default'. If you do not edit it, I'll go with that.

Turn Notes - Do you want to do something specific? Enter a Secret Realm? Help the Clan out in some way? If you have something specific you want to accomplish on this turn, put it in turn notes so I can adjust your Fate around it.

All other fields are for QM use to record character information to properly run the flow of the game.

Minervina Barda: The Fall of Empires, The Rise of Paperwork.

—-- Year 237 of the reign of Manuel Konstantinos------

In the years following the collapse of the Jingshen Clan, Minervina had to learn some harsh lessons.

First amongst them was that while conquering was hard, conquest is even harder. Oh you generally had a bit less bloodshed and screaming, but you got far more parchmentwork.

She sat behind a desk of polished oak, lacquered to a fine gleam in a wood polish of her own concoction, as she tried to rinse some persistent ink stains off her hands. It wouldn't do for the town's glorious new overseer to be seen with blotchy hands, like some backcountry mortal scribe. She didn't give a damn personally but the locals were a testy lot, so it was important she made a certain impression.

"Oh Emilia, why did we get stuck with this job again?"

The giant venom spirit stirred from her warm spot by the gilded marble fireplace, chewing on an ember, She had yet to develop the capacity for speech, though Minervina had hopes that the leap into Core Formation might change that, but her eyes held intelligence aplenty and her mistress was quite able to interpret her answer.
"I know, Panopolis volunteered us again. No doubt he's hoping the locals will finish me off for him. Did you get a good look at poor Pyrum when he handed control of the town's arrays over to me? He probably won't get the use of those limbs back, not even with the blood of bronze in his corner."
The serpent nods obligingly before going back to her meal. The poison cultivator continues complaining regardless. "Two overseers poisoned nigh unto death in as many years. No surprise no one wants the job but this pisshole town produces too many stones for us not to have a presence here. In comes old man Panopolis 'I have the perfect solution, let's send the woman who can't be poisoned!' cue applause and political points for him; boredom, bureaucracy and the possibility of a knife through the throat for me. It's a win-win situation, no doubt about it."

The torrent of sarcasm is cut off by a polite knock at the door of her office. Her office. Strange words those.

"Come in Bi, I could use the distraction."

Her long time aide, confidante and friend entered promptly. The Blood had taken root in her much more deeply after her breakthrough to the Second Realm, giving her skin the tell-tale hue of the Clan that she had lacked before. A fortunate thing, she bore wounds from the recent conflicts that would have killed or crippled one who wasn't so blessed. She had taken to wearing colourful scarves to cover the teeth marks and absent flesh, a pretty crimson one today.

She couldn't help but shiver and fight the urge to gag when she looked at it. Memories she would rather set aside welling up.

—-- Year 233 of the reign of Manuel Konstantinos, The Jingshen Annexation------

The invasion had proceeded at a breakneck pace, town after town had fallen before the might of the Legions. Minervina had been assigned a position with the northern thrust of the attack. 60,000 Clan Cultivators marching into the teeth of Jingshen fortifications. A chain of fearsome citadels that had kept the moribund merchant clan safe for millenia. Each fell swiftly, truly they fell faster than their boldest predictions. Though not without exacting a hefty tithe of Bronze blood in the process.

As a Poison Cultivator at the peak of her realm, she had found her role in the army to be nebulous at best. While she had some limited experience as a commanding officer, everyone knew she was wasted in formation work, and the Qi Condensation juniors were better off under the command of professional Centurions, even if they lacked her Cultivation.

Instead she trailed just behind the leading edge of the advancing army, operating as something of a problem solver for the various Legates in overall command of the expedition's day to day affairs.

Most days she took a venom pill to shroud her Qi emanations and attached herself to one of the various small patrols that guarded the great army's flanks and sought to scout, map and control the new territory. Usually less than 20 Cultivators strong, these groups were too small to muster particularly powerful formations and were often seen as perfect targets by the more militaristic 'Bei' Jingshen who populated this stretch of desert.

They knew the terrain well enough to set up effective ambushes and had enough experience of desert warfare to strike like bandits and then vanish into the black dunes that surrounded their homes. What the Bei dogs didn't have was any means of dealing with a true expert revealing herself in their midst in a blinding fog of choking vapours.

The resultant massacres were so profound that the survivors ever after became convinced they were attacked by powerful bound spirits and the black shadow sorcery of Old Gold himself rather than a small human woman.

After the sixth such raiding party was annihilated by the 'Hidden Fog Demons' these nuisance attacks largely stopped. Perhaps not the most glorious of contributions, but Minervina was content to have done her part in reducing the attrition rate amongst her juniors. Enough Clan blood was to be spilled in this war already.

Her nights on the campaign trail were largely spent in the medical tents, working alongside Bi and many other Devils from Legions that cultivated alchemical and surgical expertise. It was a beneficial experience, if a harrowing one, for the Poison Mistress. Like many in her profession, she had always had some knowledge and experience with the healing arts. The difference between strong medicine and deadly poison is often as little as dosage and timing after all. In truth she thought herself just as capable as any Alchemist at the restorative arts.

With her centuries of experience working with the human body she could forge flesh restoring and bone healing pills with aplomb. She had learned to avoid brewing the kinds of Breakthrough Elixirs and Body Cleansing Pills that are often considered the pinnacle of the alchemical arts. The destructive nature of her Constitution and Dao tended to bleed into such incredibly delicate concoctions, rendering them unsuitable for those who weren't already walking some kind of Poison Dao themselves.

No it wasn't the alchemists who impressed her, it was the surgeons.

Men and women with nerves of gravebronze. Bold enough to strap a thrashing legionnaire to a cot while they washed the acid out of his eyes. Knowledgeable enough to perform acupuncture on wounded Elders with almost totally unique physiologies. Hands and Qi control steady enough to piece together the shattered remnants of a crushed Dantian with nothing more than a pair of razor sharp jade pliers and their own Will, saving a Centurion from a short life as a crippled mortal. Voices kind and wise enough to nurse wounded pride and encourage the exhausted soul back to health, a task even more important when a soldier's survival relies so much on the strength of her Dao Heart.

Here was an art and vocation she couldn't mimic or fake, as glorious and deep as her own. It was fascinating, and she knew that even with an Immortals span of years she would never have enough time to truly master its intricacies.

Maybe if things had turned out differently when she first started on her path she could have been regarded as a great Spirit Doctor, a medical savant sought after by devil and outsider alike, but that was not her fate, not in this lifetime, and she loved her current craft far too much to entertain regrets for too long
.
Not that she didn't rack up some modest achievements amongst her medical colleagues during the campaign. Her arts were particularly well suited for purging disease and infection, usually endemic conditions in a war camp of such size, even one consisting of 'perfected' Cultivators. It's often said that after a certain point in his development a Cultivator is immune to such trivialities. In truth, Qi influences all living things, and bacteria are not the type of entity to miss such an opportunity. Spiritually enhanced epidemics are not a force to be taken lightly. She had suffered a few weeks of dealing with vast numbers of individual cases of sickness amongst the troops varying from the usual banal barrage of venereal diseases and infected injuries to a more exciting encounter with a primitive but effective Jingshen bioweapon. A common foot fungus that had been amplified with Qi.

Dealing with that last incident had given her the political clout to push the Legates to give her some authority in that area. Afterwards cases were kept to a minimum with a strict regime of strategically placed torches burning purgative incense, mandatory health inspections and more thorough routine cleansing of utensils in the food tents as well as a range of mandatory vaccinations for the more vulnerable First Realm Cultivators.

It was only modest changes to established protocol, but frankly the Optimatoi were out of practice at keeping an offensive army in the field for so long, so she felt her contribution was worthwhile. She fully intended to write her procedures up into a monograph and submit them to the Elder Yu at some point when she found the time.

Her third and most arduous duty was one she was most well prepared for. Siege breaker and slaughterer. Expert Poison Masters are expected to be able to deliver incredible amounts of suffering upon enemies at range, controlling clouds of toxic vapour, torrents of liquid acid and the like. Minervina had been familiar with such base arts as a mere Aspirant. Now with 200 years of experience in the arts of the Scarlet Crow Scroll, she spared no indignity on the Jingshen. The fortified walls of manor houses were torn asunder by armies of conjured serpents. Entire enemy camps wept tears of blood and agony as invisible vapours killed them in their beds. Brother turned on brother, and fathers slew their sons under the subtle influence of mental venoms that had no physical expression on the material plane.

Such demonic techniques were unusual and terrifying to the Jingshen, and Minervina was often called on to ply her deadly trade on the many smaller Spirit Stone mines, castles and townships that dotted the land between the enemy's three Great Forts. It was grisly work, but it was also an invaluable chance to perfect her craft. She could never have attempted so many experiments in peacetime.

This was the routine she had settled into during the long years of the march on the Underworld Spirit Palace. It was worthwhile and productive, but after 6 long years she found she was looking for a greater challenge. Word was filtering into the ranks of great achievements amongst the ranks of her peers. The Power of Callista, the Cunning of Zeno, the Sacrifice of Amaranth. These and many more had become watchwords and slogans amongst the thousands of legionnaires. Some small part of Minervina wanted a piece of that glory.

It was these thoughts that filled her mind when a private missive arrived offering an opportunity to sabotage the ancestral stronghold of their enemies. A small team were to dare the dangers of the Underworld Spirit Palace and plant a terrible corruptive weapon in the depths of their greatest repository of treasures. It was a suicide mission. Such an action could not go unanswered. Even If the infiltrators could pull it off and somehow escape, the Jinghen would forever be after them. They would tear heaven and earth apart to punish the culprits. Minervina volunteered without a second thought.

—-- Year 237 of the reign of Manuel Konstantinos------

Shaking off her disgust and guilt with a practised discipline, Minervina gestured her companion towards a seat. Once her assistant was comfortable, the Expert rose up and started prepping the modest kettle that adorned one corner of the workspace.

"What seems to be the problem? Not another payment dispute is it? I swear the local cultivators need to learn to trade in Contribution Points like everyone else. If they don't like it they should join their Jingshen cousins on the Battlefield."

Minervina supposed she shouldn't take the complaints personally. The Clans insistence on paying all cultivators who remained in the region entirely in contribution points was a blunt but effective means of control.

Strict rationing of spirit stones meant the Clans administrators could keep a close eye on the numbers, movements and efforts of the natives. Furthermore, with almost all the region's famous mines now under the Legions watchful gaze, the only way they could maintain their hard won cultivation was to buy those stones back from the Clan. A Clan which only accepted payment in Contribution points and imposed additional levies on purchases from those who lacked the Blood of Bronze.

This way most of the former Great Clans servants were too busy working the mines or slaving away in foundries for Points to plot or incite dissent. They had great difficulties even accessing the Clan Contribution board, after all the greater part of its functions are sealed to those of the Bronze Bloodline. All this had compelled many to choose integration over poverty, accepting bloodline transplants.

Minervina suspected that before the decade was out, all of the patchwork of small sects and clans that made up the bulk of the local Cultivators population would have Bronze Blooded members, either through wedlock or transfusion, if only to cash in on these economic benefits.

She took a moment to marvel at the practised craftsmanship with which the Optimatoi could dismantle a centuries old culture. They might not be the Sea Conquering Army anymore, but their descendents had not forgotten all of their ancestors' skills.

Bi accepted her tea with polite gratitude before shaking her head. "Nothing so banal I'm afraid. Our next supply caravan is overdue. They were supposed to arrive two days ago. The locals are worried bandits might have overtaken them. Most of them are weak enough that they still need to eat fairly regularly."
"Hmm, you would think living in a land that grows nothing but gemstones and sand would encourage them to outgrow that weakness. I suppose I can take half the cohort and see if I can find this missing caravan. Unless you want to go? Protocol dictates at least one Expert should remain here in the town."

Imposing harsh economic restrictions where none had existed before always has consequences of course. While Minervina had not yet heard of any successful or large-scale rebellions, petty acts of treachery or banditry had become routine in remote regions like this. Keeping such things suppressed was part of her duty here.

As the conversation wrapped up, the Centurion stood to gather her armour, tools and weapons. The taste of iron and bile flooded her mouth just as she was about to step out the door. A flash of characters inscribed on the horizon and the slippery feel of raw meat in her hands overtook her.

Poor access to spirit stones was far from the only reason they were having renewed problems with bandits after all.

—-- Year 235 of the reign of Manuel Konstantinos, The Jingshen Annexation------

The team selected to raid the Jingshens greatest stronghold was eclectic, but powerful. It was a madcap plan, attempting to undermine centuries old defences with nothing more potent than Second Realm cultivators. But somehow it all came together anyway.

They had just enough muscle in the form of professional warriors and duelists like Xiao Yingzi and Demetrius Ceres to break in the door and cover their retreat. Experienced infiltrators like Angelos were vital in shepherding the small group through enemy lines and past checkpoints. The sheer metaphysical might of Aretaphila Myia, one of the Clans precious Single Pillar Kings, lent them all wings as they dashed towards their goal. The Alchemist Galene had arguably the most arduous task, carrying the seething corrosive mass of toxic Qi to the target location. Minervina could have taken that role, her Constitution made her well suited for such things, but she already had a task.

Her role? To be one giant distraction, and a target.

She had spent months and years on the campaign trail, and she had not been idle. She had sacrificed much of the time she was allotted for her personal cultivation and what little sleep she still needed. Her labour had borne terrible fruit. Three masterpieces of doom and despair, each subtle and potent enough to shake a battlefield as grim as that final one of the war.

The first was a biological weapon, an improved version of the Jingshen manufactured plague she had foiled early in the campaign. A double handful of carefully cultivated spores scattered on the wind. Moments later screams resounded for miles around as men and women fell to their knees, inch thick violet fungus growing rapidly from the soft tissues of their nostrils, throats and eyes. Some victims ripped out their own eyeballs in their eagerness to be free of the clinging mass.

The second was a more traditional toxin with a necromantic twist. The distilled essence of a dozen varieties of desert scorpions, boiled and refined into sticky black liquid. Deadly, but hardly novel. The trick was in the delivery mechanism. She had added the marrow of a dozen repentant deserters to the noxious brew, capital offenders who's desperate shades were bound to their bones by dark rites and promises of redemption.

With a whispered word the crowd of lesser shades scooped up tiny pieces of the potent poison. The link to their own dead flesh meant even these petty ghosts could manipulate the material, in defiance of normal physical laws. With another word the invisible spectres vanished about their business. They passed through the assembled guards and cultivators like a flock of reapers, each Jingshen gently marked with a tiny speck of the lethal liquid.

The third poison had become something of a trademark, Scarlet Crow Confusion Concoction. A vast wave of the invisible gas swallowed up entire regiments of enemy cultivators. No doubt it took hold of dozens of servants, infants and other noncombatants as well, but this mission was too important and desperate for Minervina to indulge moral scruples. The concoction had its typical effect, a crushing wave of debilitating fear and panic, leading to a bloody mess of friendly fire amid the chaos.

Amidst this maelstrom of carnage, it was merely difficult, rather than utterly impossible for the small group of infiltrators to get the Contamination Spike into position. As the enemies defences crumbled Minervina looked on what she had wrought and allowed herself a moment of pure satisfaction. She was watching history unfold, one of her Clans greatest foes was withering and dying in front of her, and in a small way she could claim to have hammered one of the nails in its coffin.

Of course, it was at that moment that Old Jingshen himself took exception to her actions.

The blow was diffuse, a stray thought given mass and velocity. Her best efforts had warranted less than a second of the Nascent Souls attention.

That moment was more than she could stand. Her Dao Pillars creaked, crumbled and collapsed under the weight. Her skin split like an overripe fruit, her bones shattered and she fell.

Somehow, she held on to a fragment of consciousness long enough to hear the first stanza of Myia's song, a soprano that challenged the wrath of the Heavens itself.

She turned inward then, lost amongst the purple sea that was her Dantian. Six of the seven islands that held her pillars had sunk between the storm tossed waves. The only one still afloat was the first. Her initial Pillar, her foundation stone on the long journey to Core Formation. A Tree of Life that had thrived on Tribulation lightning.

It was split in twain, its broken branches scattered around its shattered trunk.

For the first time in years, Minervina wept.

That tree had been her companion for over a century. Its creation had been inspired by a pilgrimage to an ancient Spirit Oak centuries ago, when she was little more than a girl. In a long and adventurous life, she had yet to see anything it's equal in splendour.

She then recalled the gift that the tree had given her.

A drink of its sap, renowned in legend and myth for its curative properties. It was said that it could even bring you back from the dead. A life saving treasure she had never used.

Perhaps the connection remained?

She sang then, a stuttering, tearful prayer to a faraway tree in a distant land. A request for salvation, for an end to pain and new growth.

Something answered.

Green shoots burst from the dead tree.

Death brings forth Life, Life Brings forth Death.

It was one of the first lessons she had found on her Dao. It was a testament to how desolate she had been that she had forgotten it for even a moment.

Out in the world, a corpse started breathing again. Skin grew back in seconds and slithers of bone hooked together with disturbing fluidity.

Minervinas eyes flew open. She paused to pull in a series of ragged, gasping breaths before stumbling back to her feet. Her body was whole, but every inch of her being screamed in pain. Her flesh and bone were as good as new, but something told her the damage to her spirit was not so easily fixed.

Perhaps that's why the bloodlust hit her so hard.

Somewhere a King rose, a Nascent Soul died and a new Era began. Minervina knew nothing of it.

All she saw was red.

—-- Year 237 of the reign of Manuel Konstantinos------

The sound of red stained teeth struggling to gnaw through human flesh is oddly distinctive. Once you have heard it enough times it sinks into your consciousness.

The caravan had not been delayed by common bandits. These raiders had not looked twice at the wagons of mundane foodstuffs or even the array carved mining equipment.

These animals were only interested in meat.

She took a moment to observe the closest specimen. It would have been handsome once. It was still clad in the dishevelled robes of the Jingsheng Nan, a wealth of gore stained finery adorning his slick hair and arms. But there was nothing sentient or human left in this young master's eyes.

Her soldiers were still a good distance away, she had ordered them back when it became clear what had happened. The disciples had seen enough slaughter lately, and she felt compelled to deal with this alone.

This was what she might have become. She couldn't recall much of what happened when she slipped under that wave of madness, but she had investigated afterwards. She knew the crimes she had committed, and was still at a loss for how to even the scales.

There was a shift as the Blood Demon realised he was being watched. He hunched up over the corpse. An animal stooping over its kill, wary of scavengers.

With a sigh, the Poison Mistress drew her sword and fished a pill from her storage pouch. Perhaps she would never find a way to properly apologise to Bi for eating her fingers? She stepped forward to begin the battle.

"I suppose this is a starting point."

4000 words! Been on the stove for a long time. I know I owe everyone badass 8th Pillar Formation and Third Great realm Tribulation scenes. I'll try and do something with those next, but I really wanted to get something of Mins wartime experience and recuperation from her injury down in text first.

Samson Murus 3 - Approaching Storm
Approaching Storm

Not long now, not long at all, a few decades, perhaps just over 20 years at this point. Doesn't seem like it had been long since he first entered the Legions. But over 70 years had already passed in the blink of an eye. He had reached Foundation Building in average time, he could have reached it sooner but he held out. It was perhaps a mistake to attempt to ascend the unorthodox realms despite the power they gave. The blood mist had taught him a harsh lesson, that he was unable to protect anything as a mere Qi Condensation. He needed more power than what they could grant within time. He would have probably barely reached the 11th Heavenstage before the next trials, maybe the 12th if he was lucky.

Samson closed his eyes and rolled his shoulders, feeling the power of the Bramble Blood pulsing in him. Then he went deeper, the first of his pillars stood solidly hopefully to be joined by others soon. 20 years left, until the next trials, the next fight for survival, the next culling. He more prepared now and willing to take the invaders on but there was still time to grow stronger yet, he wouldn't let the invaders do as they pleased. As long as he drew breath he would oppose them. The smell of smoke was growing stronger by the day. But this time he would make sure they were the ones who burned.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well managed to squeeze this one out at the deadline. A measly 246 words but enough to get me another LST I guess.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

"Look, you're not understanding the prestige-driven mindset these people operate off of," Wan Yi had told them. "If you make the name grandiose enough and make a fancy enough sign to advertise with, it's inevitable that one cultivator or other would mistake the place for a high-end establishment and go in. Even if they leave without buying anything, they'll be seen going in and out, and that'll attract other cultivators out of curiosity. They won't want to say the name because it's a mouthful, so they'll start referring to it in the abstract, 'that place over in the mortal district'. If a business is so important that you don't even have to say its name to know what you're referring to, isn't it worth going to? Word will spread from there and before you know it, we'll be rich! All I need is a few thousand stavraton to get off the ground - hey wait, where are you going?"

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Bah, he thought to himself. Shows what they know. While it was true that his cafe hadn't experienced the instant success attracting cultivators he'd projected - though he still held that if he'd gotten more startup money that would be different - he had been able to hold up a reasonably successful business model for a few years now, turning the empty warehouse he'd bought into a spacious lounge and coffee bar, serving all sorts of teas and pastries. In recent years he'd even been able to get his hands on some more exotic ingredients, with the fall of the Jingshen resulting in much more availability of resources in Golden Devil lands. As for the plan to attract cultivators to the establishment…

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Wan Yi smiled as the steady rhythm of distant impacts that had gone on without pause for the last seventy two hours slowed and fell silent. Bustling out from behind the counter, he went over to a particularly large table he'd had specially made out of the finest steel, wiping it and the accompanying chair down with a cloth to ensure they shone. His favorite customer was due to appear shortly.

Sure enough, little more than five minutes after the cessation of his regular three-day training session, the Golden Grizzly appeared in the doorway of the Golden Imperial Auspiciously Pleasant Mystical Threefold Heavenly Green Profound Glimmering Contemplation Jewel Beneficent Elder Ephemral Generous Tiger Ancient Elderly Revered Dragon Elder Ancestor Humble Immortal Ten Thousand Petal Tea Boutique Dantian Massage Parlor Appliance Repair And Miscellaneous Accessories Including But Not Limited To Jewelry And Sweetmeats Cozy Rejuvenation Pill Furnace Forge Shopping Establishment Community Hospital Child And Animal Care Center For Impromptu Gladiatorial Arena Coffee Bar Reconstruction And Refreshment Stand Complimentary Napkin And Limb Reattachment Surgical Suite By And For The Best Men And Women Regional Apocalypse Survival Bunker Heavenly Sword Decree Bed And Breakfast No Refunds Or Solicitations Accepted Cafe, clad in thick woolen clothing and an unassuming cap.

"Master Golden Grizzly," Wan Yi called out with a smile on his face, waving the rotund man over. "Right on time! I've prepared your table for you."

"Just Grizzly," the bronze-skinned giant rumbled as he strode over, each step shaking the cafe like a distant thunderclap. "You still have the coffee?"

Wan Yi bowed, already walking towards the cauldron he'd been preparing for the past several days. "Of course, noble Grizzly. The recipe for Mogg's Yang-Grade Testosterone Coffee takes some time to prepare, but I'm always sure to prepare it in the appropriate timeframe before you arrive." He hefted the iron cauldron that was the size of his head with a grunt of effort, carefully pouring a small cupful of acrid black liquid into a porcelain cup. Plating it up with a collection of dumplings and small skewered fish, he carried it over to the massive cultivator's table, smiling graciously as he received a fist bump and thumbs up gesture.

Yes, Wan Yi, he thought as he returned to his habitual spot behind the bar. Just you wait - he may be the only cultivator to pass through your doors so far, but before long he'll be leading droves in. The name of the … of the cafe will be known across the Virtuous Flipper!

The Grizzly, for his part, munched thoughtfully on a dumpling as he gazed out across the mortal city. While it was common wisdom that great amounts of exercise necessitated equally great amounts of sustenance, he'd not always found it so - particularly since recent events had taught him the peril of getting between stick-wielding old ladies and their food. More often than not, the quiet satisfaction of a well-earned snack after a short multi-day training session had proven of more value to him than the largest of feasts. It might leave the stomach of his body slightly more empty than an alternative meal, but it filled the stomach of his heart quite well.

"Coffee time," he hummed in contentment.

AN: 1,019 words. 202 of those are just the name of the cafe and I'm not sorry. May heaven and/or Occi strike me down for my impertinence.

Qinglong Shu 27 And Chang 7 - Cultivation Changes, Bonds Remain

Qinglong Shu 27 And Chang 7 - Cultivation Changes, Bonds Remain

Qinglong Shu walked through the area, ears sharp as her own footsteps echoed back to them. Her face was stuck in a perpetual grimace, turning her head around almost frantically despite her blindfold preventing her from actually seeing. She let out a long frustrated sigh. How hard could it be to find one douchebag in the sacred grounds of the Golden Devils? Shouldn't she be hearing a bunch of 'YOU DARE' and a couple of 'YOU'RE COURTING DEATH' by now? Sure, Golden Devil Clan usually didn't have that, but classics were classics for a reason. No way someone like him didn't literally invite people to jump him with how he kept on acting. Yet here he was, apparently not doing that, given the relative silence on the grounds. All she heard was people still pointing out her blindfolded state or her scales. One would think the novelty of it would die out eventually, yet here she was. She sighed. Was she really doing this? By all means, she could find better things to do at this point. Keep up training. Spend more time with her family, within our without the clan grounds. Yet…she pressed her lips together before licking them.

Well, if the rumors about him were true, no way she could leave the score unsettled, right? She came to a sudden stop, her nose picking up on something. She grimaced and smiled at the same time. Ah, that disgusting smell. Of tobacco that was essentially poison even to cultivators. There was only one shithead that actually smoked that stuff. Rolling her shoulders, she rounded around the corner and then smelled him through the smoke he was puffing. With her senses more enhanced, she could smell how much he reeked. Of rot. Or rather, of death. She doubted it was because he must be looking as filthy as ever. Apparently the rumors were true. He went through some shit like she did in the Qiguai Secret Realm. She could sense how his aura is thicker, stronger now. Crossing her arms, confident that she was standing in front of the right person, she cracked a smirk at him.

"Yo. Heard you advanced pretty well too, Chang." She pointed at herself and then at him. "I'd say if we have a rematch now, it'd be a proper one this time, right?"

Yes. If he was actually at the stage of Body Purification like her…it'd be like the bad good ol' days of their first two decades together. When they were both equally incompetent compared to what they were now, when Shu was actually on the losing side of things against him. He was an asshole. Someone she would never see eye to eye, for their values were too different. But damn, if it wasn't fun bashing each other's brains in! She just hoped he felt the same and would rise to the challenge, else her running around all blind like that would have been embarrassing and a major waste of time.

Chang was content on indulging in his addiction to tobacco, one that he restarted because he had enough of indulging in the sensation of pain. When one thing went away, something had to come take its place.

He was about to sigh and get back to training before his personal time was interrupted.

Chang propped his head up, though he continued to sit. He heard the familiar voice of an annoying person who seemed to want another fight like last time. If it was before the Qiguai Realm, the redhead would've undoubtedly leapt to the chance of avenging his loss out of a misbegotten sense of damaged pride even if his chances at victory would be far slimmer than were compared to now.

His crimson eyes landed straight on the blindfold and the scales of his short, wannabe rival.

"...Oh, it's you." The irritation that always rolled off of him in waves and could be noticed by even the most oblivious of cultivators wasn't present. Chang was akin to a charred husk, a man who burnt himself out.

Rubbing his head, Chang stands up and towers over the blindfolded Qinglong.

The fire that burned so fervently within him didn't go away. Chang contained it, had it fester within the deepest pits of his core right inside his soul. It served as a burning motivation to tear down the heavens itself. It was a pretty rotten flame that survived off of nothing more than ashes unfortunately.

Nothing more than a shell.

"A rematch does sound nice. Where do you wanna do it?"

Ooookay. Way more subdued than she expected. He really must have gone through some life changing stuff if he acted like this. Well, she welcomed that change. Which as when an idea entered her head and she grimaced for a moment. She was going to regret this. Regret it so much. But there was only one place she had in mind that she could use on the fly like this.

"Waycastle Myia is basically empty. Far away from any…collateral." She licked her lips, hoping that nobody would be mad for appropriating that place like that. Then she shook her head and raised an eyebrow at him from underneath her blindfold. "You want a proper rematch now or not?"

Chang stifled the urge to rip off the blindfold, so he instead snapped his pipe between his fingers and let it fall to the ground. Only after that, he relaxed.

On the outside, the redhead seemed to have calmed down with the passing of time. He gained experience in a secret realm and faced life and death very intimately, much more than most cultivators ever would in their entire lives. Because of that, he came to realize a certain truth, which is why he smiled without a hint of negativity in front of somebody who got on his nerves so efficiently last time. Chang was content on staring at Qinglong until the mood was just about to become awkward. At that pivotal moment, he finally opened his mouth again with a hint of haste in his tone.

"Yeah, let's do it now." Just because he was calmer on the outside, doesn't mean he was fine on the inside. His need for power had grown to the point of madness. His time in the secret realm had shaped him both positively and negatively—Chang found his Dao and he understood the way of life he needed to embody and follow with every breath he took on this flawed world.

He needs to fight Qinqlong. It's a way to get stronger and he also needs to check something. He'll figure it out during or after the fight, but it's something he really needs. Does he still feel antipathy toward anyone other than him or has it completely been replaced for antipathy against the heavens itself?

Shu was about to snap and ask if he fell asleep before he finally answered. She felt the urge to take off her blindfold and see what that was about. But she decided against it. No, not yet. Plenty of time for some soul searching later. For now, she had a guy to lead. With that in mind, she lead the way.

///

Opening the gates to Waycastle Myia felt like she was doing naughty. Something illegal. Still, she had those keys and she's been going in and out for a while now, with the rest of the 501st still out there, wrecking faces hopefully. Though this was the first time she had a visitor with her. Was there some rule that she was forgetting? Then again, she didn't recall any rules. If at all. Worst case, she'd just blame her good ol' senior Katha for not giving her that information. Besides, what better way to dust this place off than through vigorous combat?

"So yeah, 501st is out of the house, so it's basically just me cleaning up the place sometimes. Nobody should be bothering us when we do this." She licked her lips, glancing behind her as they walked. Then she let out a sigh before forcing her smile back. "You got any questions, feel free to ask."

If he had any, they were gonna give her a headache, but she was the representative for the legion now, so she had to be a good host. That was just manners, right? It wasn't like she had to recruit him or anything. Just neutral, no strings attached information for someone who could want to know.

Chang casually strolled beside his soon-to-be opponent, actually not ignoring the majority of another person's words for once. The air smelled odd, but he's just gonna chalk that up to the stench of a wench getting in the way of his desire to train. Red eyes flicked toward Qinglong.

Well, he can cross that out. This will be a training opportunity after all.

Then what's that weird smell? He shook his head and ran Qinglong's previous words through his head.

He doesn't really have any questions, but he does feel a desire for small talk. The midget is pretty much the only person that's committed to his memory of all the Golden Devils with the small exception of that one guy who taught him, though even his name is starting to fade from Chang's memory.

"You haven't improved as much as I thought you would've," he drawled. Chang smirked, but it lacked the usual style of mockery he would've gone with in the past. "You been slackin' or something? Or you got something else that's taking up your time?"

She opened her mouth, a snarl forming before she bit it back. Nope, that was her blood trying to rage. Keeping a lid on it with ease, she flexed her jaw muscles a few times before exhaling through her nose.

"Well, guess compared to the past, I didn't make that big of a leap." She chuckled to herself, blindfolded face towards the front. "But believe me, I got plenty of new tricks under my belt thanks to Qiguai, just like you." She tugged at said belt in demonstration. Sure, she could've trained more on her cultivation, but new skills needed mastery. That and she would never ignore those that helped her on her path, her loved ones, unlike a certain someone. She hummed thoughtfully. Was he still like this or did he change there as well? Questions for later.

Navigating the place became second nature to her at this point. She didn't know what room was for what most of the time, but if it was here, she knew where it was. Thus, she led Chang down to the basement of the castle. With a loud creak, showing that she forgot to oil this area up, she clapped her hands and turned on the lights. They took quite a while comparatively speaking, as they flickered and groaned, as if trying to resurrect themselves. Shu frowned a bit. Okay, note to self, replace the lights down here. Just another thing on the list among hundreds. Honestly, why was the 501st so poor?

…Right, literally almost no manpower to justify a bigger budget. Lament later, Qinglong Shu, She had an asshole to fist. Turning around in the somewhat well lit area, she gestured around at the room, a wide free spaces surrounded by some empty crates.

"Okay, as far as I know, this place is supposed to be able to take Foundation Establishment level of punishment. Thus, it's meant for sparring." Shu paused, stopping in her twirling of her hand. Then she pressed her lips together, lowering her limb. "Well, either that or I misheard it and it's just supposed to be a storage room."

"Why would you mishear that? You not paying attention to your superiors? Even if you act like me, it's not like we'll get along any better." Either that or she was making a joke to lighten the mood.

What a farce and a waste of time. Chang shook his hand, forcing out cracks, like the bones in his wrists were being fractured over and over again. The redhead took his time to look around the dusty place. It was a true far cry from the place where he used to live. It gives off the rustic atmosphere of the poor.

Poor people… Ah, Chang almost slipped into an internal tangent again.

She was going to ignore that barb against her. Not her fault that Legate Myia liked to hear herself talk. Maybe she realized it, or maybe she did not, but it was very easy to drift in her own thoughts. Not only that, she was pretty sure nobody ever gave her a proper tour. If they did, she must have really forgotten. Not to mention, the place was big, especially for, what, a handful of people living here? Still, she knocked against the wall a few times. Seemed tough enough for their needs. With that in mind, she began rolling her shoulders to warm up, pacing around the wide open space they were within.

"Best out of three. Obviously without any crippling or killing moves." She stretched her arms, at the same time pointing at Chang with a flat look. "Also anything we wreck or damage from our fight, we gotta replace, so don't even think about running away after we're done."

Heavens knew that asshole would not know how to fix a plank, much less a wall. Still, more hands were more hands and given the state of the castle, despite Shu's best attempts of fixing what she could, the vibrations from their fight could easily knock down some things at the very least.

"So, we're doing it here, huh." Chang swiftly removed his upper clothes, the robes falling to the dirty ground. He didn't care if it was to get dirty because all of his focus was on this fight right now. The redhead had a sleeveless shirt beneath, the same color as his hair. If blood were to spill on it, it wouldn't even be a small deal.

There's another issue that snatched his attention. No killing blows and no crippling?

It will limit how much he'll get out of this…but that's fine. If she's gonna be like that, then he really will make like a ghost and fuck off immediately after making a mess of this place. Chang tilted his head, cracking his neck on both sides and leapt on the balls of his feet. He needed to loosen up, but he can see victory being in the bag for him. Qinglong doesn't know what he can do and he also had a big leap in improvement. Chang doesn't know what she can do either, but he'll smash her in close combat anyways.

He hopes she can put up a better fight elsewhere. A woman wouldn't be able to fight on a man's playing field.

Shu threw her robes away. In their place, she rolled her shoulders, flexing her new tattoo on her back. Her arms and back were now free to reveal their scales to the world, only her front being covered by a black shirt, connected around her neck only. She grinned as she reached up with her hand to her eyes and grabbed the cloth around it.

"Ready when you are, you fu-" The blindfold fluttered down to the ground. Her dragonic eyes landed on Chang at last. The instance they did, she recoiled, covering her mouth as her expression became green. Bile rose up in her throat but she forcefully choked it back as she snapped her head away. "What the hell is wrong with your soul?!"

She couldn't describe what she was seeing. Couldn't parse it. The information sent words, letters, numbers at her but they were all meaningless. All she could comprehend however, was one simple thing. There was…something, on his soul. Something that could only be described as unnatural. Maybe if she reached the Twelfth Heavenstage like Katha, she would be able to recognize what it was. But for now, all she had was ignorant disgust and it disgusted her even more than the disgust herself. She took a deep breath and forced herself to look back at Chang. Death/Life, Loathing/Love. Opposites upon opposites, layered and intermingling with each other. It shouldn't work, to coexist like that. It shouldn't be possible for something like Chang to exist. And yet here he was. As if two souls inhabited one body. Heavens above, she knew he was insane, but she didn't realize it was so damn literal! She swallowed down the rest of the bile trying to escape her. Not hiding her grimace, she pointed at him, slowly shaking her head.

"Seriously, what the hell am I looking at? It's like something is…on top of it. Sticking to it? Something to it!"

Chang's mouth was slightly agape. He didn't know how to respond to her excellent vision, so he deflected it while stretching his arms. "I called you a snake-eyed bitch before, but I'll apologize for that. You really got some wonderful eyes there."

However, even Chang realized that the brat before him wouldn't accept that as an answer. He sighed. He wished that she was as dumb as broads usually are.

Maybe she's not actually a real woman?

"I was born this way if you really want to know," Chang blurted out while ignoring that weird train of thought. "If you're still curious, then I'll tell you more if you want, but only after this spar."

Chang snapped his fingers with a cocky smile on his face. "And only if you manage to beat me even once, so give it everything you got."

Chang's soul pulsed, both he and his other were controlling Qi as one. Energy silently roared within Chang's body as he settled into a low stance, content on observing his opponent while letting her have the first move. The experiences he's gained from dying over and over and over and over and over…well, they at least made him exceptionally more resolved. His pain tolerance has gone through the roof, so he'll be fine tanking some attacks. Especially hits from a lightweight like Qinglong.

She had the feeling he was thinking something incredibly rude. Then again, that seemed to be a theme with him. He was born this way, huh? It was like he knew her obsession with Understanding things, cause vague shit like that really started to irritate her. Not only that, such arrogance. 'Only if you manage to beat me even once?' If she were to do that, she'd paste him in an instance and that wasn't the point of this. The important thing was to win at least once, by the end of it. Until then, she'd slowly escalate. Besides, she was confident in her superior experience, having been in the Body Purification Stage longer than he was. Thus, she shifted her right foot forward, right arm following it and forming a spear head with her hand. She exhaled and cracked her neck.

"Don't get too hot about yourself, buddy."

Wood Qi flooded her system, the higher efficiency, far beyond what she used to have, bursting forward immediately. Fire Qi was a bit more sluggish to form underneath her feet, but it worked well enough. Fire created coal, created better material to be burned, more explosive energy. Then, she leapt forward, accelerated by fire, aiming to pierce him through his gut. His eyes widened for but an instance before shifting away. Her arm went through the wall with ease. She clicked her tongue in irritation and pulled it out, shaking off the debris. Then she put on a smirk as she rolled her shoulders and leaned forward.

"Oh yeah, did I forget to mention? Wood Qi is way stronger now. Good dodge."

Chang ignored her words. Talk was cheap. The messy dust threatened to interfere with his senses, so he shut himself away from it and focused everything on the match.

Instead of willingly putting himself on the backfoot, the redhead took a step forward and threw a punch with his stone gauntlets. Putting all the weight on his left leg, Chang threw a quick jab to sound out just how good of a punch she can take.

She may have gotten stronger, but so did he.

Chang, who seemed to be much tamer than he was before, had his Qi explode out with ferociousness. It was almost like fire except it was nothing more than pure force accentuating his offensive nature.

Fuck, that punch hurt like a bitch! Only the Will hurt more and it was a freaking Azure Dragon! His damn gauntlets counteracted the blessings of her Scales with ease, so it was his raw power and against hers. And as much as she wanted to deny it…his brute force was better than hers. It brought her back to the start of their little rivalry of theirs. Well, why fix a broken system?! With that in mind, as the next blow came, she became the Mist, Fire mixing with Water. She slipped past the attack, but he still struck something, as a minor cut appeared on her skin. She bit her lip as she created some distance, before focusing on forging some quality metal to increase her own physical prowess. She hoped he didn't notice it. The fact it took her longer to shift elements, relatively speaking. It was still faster than most, but given he fought her before…With a snarl she ran forward, heavy stomps of Earth trying to disrupt his balance while a hammer fist of Metal came down on his head. Can't let him think about, she had to keep up the aggression!

Chang lowered his stance. He put more weight on his knees to keep himself balanced from the disturbing steps. His eyes weren't as good as his opponent, but he was able to see how she swapped from element to element. He acknowledged her training and rose both of his arms to block the telegraphed attack.

The fact that she put all her force into that and shook Chang's balance was enough to tell him that she wanted to finish things quicker. Maybe she wanted to switch to another element.

Whatever. He wasn't going to let her get the opportunity for that. With a single hand, he grasped onto her fist and pulled her in, the other fist winding back for a swing that carried all his weight behind it. The hand that lashed out was the opposite from the one that would've been supplemented by his dominant leg. It was a simple reverse punch he picked up when he decided to he needed to widen his combat repertoire.

A simple technique but in that instance, Shu couldn't avoid it completely. Her Qi shifting to Water was too slow to her liking. The extent of the longer duration couldn't even be measured by seconds…but it was an obvious gap. So instead of letting the hit slip past her completely, it was merely weakened before she was sent away. With her face aching a bit, Shu was put onto the backfoot as Chang rushed forward, a furious flurry of punches thrown at her. She tried her best, sticking to Water to make her arms turn into defensive whips, but with her mind having to juggle Fire Qi on her feet and Water Qi on her arms due to the decreased efficiency, as well as observe where his punches were, she was quickly overwhelmed. Soon enough, several knuckles embedded themselves into her and she felt the bruises as she spat out spit when she went down.

Rolling over the ground, she was dazed for but a moment as she stopped on one knee. She recovered quickly, with pain still aching her flesh. Still, a moment in such a fight spelled certain defeat. Which meant she lost this one. Spitting to the side, Shu let out a growl. Her draconic features grew for a moment, claws and teeth growing as her scales became more pronounced. Then she took a forced, calming breath, cooling herself down. Lying on the ground like this, with her body aching, she focused on regaining her stamina. She pondered about popping some pills…but no. It'd be a waste of resources and it wasn't like they had anywhere else to go. Instead, she put her blindfold loosely on her eyes, letting the darkness soothe her migraine, before she decided to speak up.

"It pains to admit it, but in a slugfest, you really are better than me. For now at least." She let out a dry scoff of amusement. "Thankfully, as you may know, I'm no one trick pony. So next round, you're gonna eat dust."

He wasn't mad about her holding back, sorta, right? She might be feeling a bit bad, for her own arrogance, but matter of fact was, that the other moves she had were active skills. Skills that trained her stamina even faster, so they were a double edged blade. She shrugged weakly, as she stretched out her legs a few times to get her circulation somewhat active.

"If it makes it up, feel free to ask anything. Give and take. You won after all."

The redhead wasn't particularly interested in the offer. He's getting more and more combat experience out of this, so there's nothing to be all that upset about. To think he would be mad would to believe that he even cares about Qinglong in the first place.

Did he care about her? He had to think to himself for a moment.

She makes a good sparring partner at least.

"What's your Dao?" The question came out unbidden. Chang was indeed curious on what she decided to put all her life in for as long as she draws breath. He hoped it was something interesting and not something boring, like love and peace. He might laugh at that.

Shu couldn't help but blink at that. She sat up, putting her blindfold to the side but kept her eyes still closed. A surprisingly deep question. She thought he was going to ask if Shu knew any good looking women he could screw and then promptly abandoned. Shu hummed thoughtfully before scratching the back of her head.

"Sorry, nobody ever really asked me that. But if I had to put a term to it, I'd say it's…" She licked her lips before smiling a bit. "[Understanding]." She paused, realizing she should probably elaborate. "Err, basically, I think if you know nothing, you are nothing? Sooo…Ignorance is Sin and what not, so learning is the best thing all of us should do. Makes sense, right?"

Shu frowned a bit. Now she wondered what his Dao was. A question for later, on top of asking him what that weird thing was on his soul. She chuckled a bit, trying to imagine what it was. Dao of Smoking? Dao of being an ass? Dao of Misogyny?

"Doesn't really make much sense to me." He used his important seconds to ruminate on what Understanding meant to her and what it meant to him and then judged it to be completely irrelevant to his way of life. "I only need to know what I care for. Everything else is jack shit."

There's a pretty low chance that Chang could understand Qinglong if that is her Dao. It didn't bother him though.

With no words coming to mind, nothing filled the awkward silence of the minor resting period. "Ah." Something did come to mind just a few moments later. The man scratched his head before speaking.

"Isn't ignorance a bliss?" Chang airily wondered. "I can think of something I wish I was better off not understanding. Whaddya think?"

Shu grit her teeth and wanted to tear Chang's throat out. But she took a deep breath and shook her head with a sigh. Even if what he said was utter nonsense, she understood why people would say something foolish like that. Ignorance was Sin, but some might wish to not know or forget to live an easier life. But not her. She did that and she was a monster back then. It should be her duty to beat it into Chang's head that Understanding was more than what he claimed…but it was too exhausting for Shu. Ruining her mood. Thus, no need to talk about it more, since it'd just piss her off even more. So instead, she remained silent as she rose to her feet.

"Alright, enough rest. Time for round two." She smirked as she leaned forward, with her right hand pulled back, as if she was ready to throw something from below. "This time you're the one who's going to kneel."

She took a deep breath. The world exploded within her mind and the shards struck out.

"重力." ( Gravity)

The Lawless Winds were unleashed with a flick of her wrist. Gravity reversed, over and over again in split seconds. Increasing, decreasing, going right, going left. At this moment, the room they were within became a place where Law was broken, where weight was ever changing. Unlike Chang, Qinglong Shu moved forward, with steady and swift steps. As if she was completely immune to the vortex of everchanging gravity. She roared as she threw a punch in just the right angle, as gravity worked with her, pushing Chang's head into her very knuckles, filled with burning Fire.

Compared to the first round between them, Chang was immediately swept off his feet by rushing winds. He heard what she said, but it was muted by the deafening sound of him being dragged with a potent force. Chang knew he wasn't dodging this attack, so he decided to throw out a punch as well.

There was no way he was letting Qinglong get an attack like this for free, so the two traded punches, Chang naturally taking more damage because he was pulled into an attack. It was gratifying to see his opponent not get off completely scot free though. Chang smirked savagely and tasted the blood flowing from his forehead.

"Come on." He made a back-and-forth motion with his right hand and taunted Qinglong.

Well, at least the Lawless Winds worked wonders, Shu thought dryly as she wiped her mouth. She narrowed her eyes at the taunt before deciding to kick it up a notch. Her muscles twitched and the Gravity Reversing Stomp went from keeping her steady within the storm to throwing her around Chang, over and over. She abandoned using any elements and focused on the natural element that was her fist: Kinetic Force. Using the Stomp over and over again like this was wasteful enough as it was. Her speed wasn't anything compared to a few cycles finishing with Fire exploding her forward, but with Chang being at the vortex's mercy, she'd be surprised if he could track her at all.

A cartwheel kick from behind him, hitting the back of his head. The Lawless Winds pushed him down, before dragging him up again. He reacted quickly, throwing a backfist at her, but she was long gone, bouncing two times to reach his front and elbowing his gut. She retreated, at the same time as he was dragged towards her too. Just as he found his footing and threw a front kick out, she increased gravity on herself to reach the ground faster to dodge. Her arm swiped out, hitting his knee. He buckled, pushed to the right, yet still found the power to try to hit her once more. It brushed her shoulder, pain flaring up as Shu ascended just in time to avoid the full brunt. Over and over, Shu stopped, reversed, changed directions, as if she was a ghost, unfazed by the storm that battered away at Chang. Yet while she was taking less damage than him, she recognized his stamina, his toughness, both physically and mentally. Not only that, she already breathed more heavily in these few exchanges than Chang did, her skin already changing into a poor color. Nevertheless, she grit her teeth and pushed through her ever growing exhaustion. If she stopped moving, stopped switching it up, she would lose. Her mind needed to remain sharp so it remained sharp.

Face scrunched up in irritation, Chang recognized an incoming loss even if he sought to deny it with every fiber of his being. The redhead's eyes were nearly bloodshot with denial as he kept his body standing strong.

The idea of forcibly trading blows like this would only leave him at a disadvantage, yet what else could he do? Other means to counter his opponent weren't things he could pull off much to his current irritation. He just wants to swat this fucking fly buzzing around.

That's why he refused to go down and kept throwing fist after fist while he took blow for blow in equal measure. Qinglong's attacks were more powerful, but Chang was more stubborn.

Eventually though, his body ignored the protests of his mind and buckled. The instant a single knee hit the ground, Chang realized that this fight was basically a loss. He fiercely faced the oncoming blow and prepared himself appropriately. He would at least go down without a hint of surrender in his bones.

Before Shu could finish the job however, she stumbled. Down on her knees, she began to choke, gasping for air as her chest and lungs seem to twist themselves into knots. Coughing violently, she felt fluids running down her cheeks. She reached with her fingers and grimaced as she saw the color of her tears. Crimson red. With a click of her tongue, she let herself fall down on the ground, back on the ground once more before she put her blindfold back on.

"Shit. Okay, that is definitely a tie…Agreed?"

A…tie? "Hahaha…" Chang laughed through his gritted teeth and forced himself back on his feet. He looked down at the opponent who coughed up blood and fell to the ground. An outsider would deign this Chang's victory, but he knew who the real victor was.

However, he wouldn't admit his loss. On the other hand, he couldn't say he won this fight either. He shook his head, contained the tumultuous emotions that festered in his head, and chuckled just a bit more. "What a sorry tie."

Chang fell back on his ass and regulated his breath. He needed to regain his energy for the next fight. He also needed to review what he could've done in that last fight and what he could do in the next fight.

Fuck his body hurts all over and now he has a raging headache.

Shu laughed a bit, wincing at the pain in her lungs. Sorry tie. What a way to describe it. And it was certainly true. As she tried to calm her breathing. Damn, even with her Gravity, she couldn't win. Honestly it pissed her off. She should have been able to win with such an overwhelming advantage. Yet she did so many wasteful moves that she ran out of steam before she could. A decision was made in her head for the next fight. It made her feel bad, to crush Chang like that if it went according to her imagination. However, at this point, she felt she was lying to him way too much and, for all his assholeness, he deserved better. Licking her lips and grimacing at the iron blood, she tilted her head at him.

"So. Tie. I suppose neither of us gets to ask twenty questions? Or do you want to do a give and take here? I'm open to both."

A give and take sounds appealing to him, but the only questions he can think of or those personal to him. Getting all personal with someone else just feels worthless to him, but maybe he should get a second opinion on this. On the off chance that he's approaching things wrong, listening to someone else for once in his life could be just what he needs.

Chang took a deep breath and slapped his cheeks. He gained some focus and rested a cheek on his palm. He sat casually and spoke, like a still lake. "If you ever had the kind of mindset that you made a large mistake, but it's one that you couldn't rectify without taking extreme measures, what would you do? Don't give me an answer like, "it depends on how severe the mistake was." I need something black and white. Also…uh."

Chang rubbed his head. There was something else he wanted to say, but it escaped his mind. "Nevermind. Just tell me your thoughts and you can ask whatever you like in return."

Not like he'll answer it. He might though.

Shu tried her very best to not openly gape at Chang. Very hard. Unfortunately her best wasn't enough. Her mouth slightly open, she forced it shut, chewing on nothing for a while. Part of her wondered what he wanted to say before cutting himself odd but she decided to overlook it for now. Raising her upper body, she crossed her arms in consideration.

"Today is just the day of deep questions with you, huh?" She scratched the back of her head. "First instinct is saying...yes."

The mistake of being too arrogant and beating up an innocent child. The mistake that was Aunt Ming's existence. She knew she would stop at nothing to kill Ming, to get rid of the sin the Qinglong created. Though she was a bit wary of how far she would actually go, at this point of time, she was determined.

"I mean you know how I want to kill my aunt. Need to kill her. Call it revenge or whatever but every day she is alive is a mistake for me. Handy example that." She tilted her head at him, about to ask what the question was for. Then she closed it. She did also want to know what was up with his soul...but he said only after the spar, right? So instead she focused on something else entirely. She grinned a bit. "So. My turn. What's your Dao? I'm sure you got your own, given all these profound questions that must be frying your brain from just coming up with them."

Surprising. Chang very much expected a no from the midget, yet she gave him an answer that was very much in line with his own sensibilities. Yeah, he can treat that as him being on the right path.

It's confirmation that his birth was definitely a mistake and it's one that needs to be rectified, but he can't afford to die yet. Not yet.

"Your response was enlightening. Thank you, Qinglong." Probably the first and last time he'll give out honest gratitude, but that's the tradeoff for declining to answer her question. "As for the other question you just threw at me so rudely…I'm not gonna tell you my Dao. You can either ask me what's up with my soul or my Dao after you beat me, but not both. I'm not that easy."

All the redhead could do was smile cheerfully.

Shu clicked her tongue in irritation. What a little bitch. Fine, Dao later and look up soul diseases in private time. What else could she ask anyway? She tapped her chin before snapping her finger.

"Since you don't seem to care much for family, I've been wondering what yours is like. Is it just you or do they not jive with you in some form?"

Were they bonding? It felt like they were bonding. It was mysterious as it was sort of disgusting. And yet, as was any interaction with the guy… she didn't hate it. It was fun in the weird kinda way.

"Pops is a decent guy if a bit overprotective. As for the others…" Chang crossed his arms, trying to remember what his family was like before he dipped on them. Faded memories were hard to recall, but he forced them to the surface. He didn't have a problem with this question anyways as he got over his family problems.

He nodded to himself. "My mother was always a bit distant, sharp-tongued, and just overall ferocious. I didn't doubt that she loved me in her own weird way, but I didn't really like her all that much. I had siblings…I think I had a sister, but I didn't care for her. My older brother was pretty cool. At least when he cared to visit."

That's pretty much all he can remember, though Chang feels it's not answering the midget's main question. It's a bit of an annoying question.

However, this was another conundrum he's long since gotten over. "It's more like I can't jive with them. They would've been better off if I wasn't born. That's about it."

Shu blinked slowly. Huh. Straightforward answer. Not a lot of details, but a lot more than she expected. Quite frankly, he could've told her he was born out of a hell pit and she'd believe it. Still, she narrowed her eyes slightly. Misogyny aside, as it was clear in his words how the female members of the family were seen compared to the males, just casually saying it'd be better if he was never born…Heavens, now she really wanted to know what was up with his soul. After all, it had to affect him something fierce if he was unironically saying that his family was better off with him not existing.

"Well, as much of a pain in the ass that you are, I wouldn't say you shouldn't have been born." Shu laughed a bit. "After all, I wouldn't have the satisfaction of beating you in the ground if you didn't exist, right?"

"You would just find someone else." Standing up and brushing the gathering dust from his clothes, Chang continues. "If I remember correctly…" And he really has to try hard to remember.

He snapped his fingers in remembrance.

"...Yeah, I think there was somebody else you were really itching to beat the shit out of. You'd get a lot more satisfaction outta that for sure." His terrible memories aside, he knew his judgement wasn't poor. The redhead could easily see the joy in this short, yet fierce fighter whenever she's trying to beat him senseless, but it's incomparable to the raw drive a person gets when they're at the cusp of achieving a great goal.

Chang tilted his head. It almost sounded like he was calling every joy meaningless in the face of one's ultimate goal that would bring them the greatest joy. Well, it's not like that's wrong to him. Only one thing truly matters; everything else is nothing more than a distraction that brings momentarily bliss or peace before real life takes the body by the reigns again.

Chang wanted to transcend all of that. He took a breath.

"Alright, that's enough talk. Let's do this already."

It was a credit to her self control that the mere hint of Ming only caused her eyebrow to twitch. Well, he wasn't wrong, in both accounts. With that back and forth done, they both got back into position. As they stood before each other, Shu started to giggle all of a sudden. Shaking her head a few times she smiled brightly at her opponent.

"Sorry to get sentimental but...heh. You are awesome, Chang. As insane as you are, as schizophrenic as you are…I just can't help but laugh every time we cross fists. I feel like I grow stronger with each strike we commit against each other." She shrugged sheepishly. "Maybe it's just me but I sense this weird…connection to you."

All Chang could do was wordlessly stare at her. His lips were stuck in a frown and he was trying to puzzle something out.

…What the hell is she talking about? Did she deviate somewhere? To call Chang insane is one thing that the man doesn't really care about, but to talk about something like a connection is another. There's only a single thing that the redhead has a connection to and it's not a good one.

He shook his head.

"Let's get the next spar over with already."

Shu's smile didn't waver. Alright, got blown off, so what? He might not recognize it but they were connected, if only by a fucked up version of a rivalry. Soon enough he'd realize they were like tumors to each other. Benign tumors, if they existed. Aggravating, painful, even brainmelting…and yet Shu wouldn't have it any other way. After all, with who else would she have this much fun while also going so hard? The DI didn't count, Elder Lang didn't count…Shu chalked it up to being genmates and rolled her shoulders.

"For all it's worth, I have to apologize for what's going to happen next." Shu licked her lips before stretching out her right arm, index finger in position to flick out. "After all…this isn't going to be fair at all." She exhaled as her body transformed, half inhuman and half human. With a barely formed snout she smiled in an apologizing manner. "Do me a favor and try to live by yourself, 'cause I have no idea how much I can hold back with this."

This was different from the other spars. Chang could instinctively realize a simple fact like that—it wasn't just from the monstrous and freakish appearance his opponent decided to don, but it was from an inexplicable pressure rolling off her in waves.

The burning-haired man stared upon the sight with a casual smile. This doesn't look winnable to him.

What an aggravating thought. That traitorous flash of insight rankled him, but there was nothing he could do to deny it. Worthless platitudes, like trying one's best or giving it their all infuriated him, but he's stuck in a situation where he has to believe in them.

Fucked up. Oh well.

Chang tightened his body and prepared to take the first hit.

Hm. Deciding to take it head on? Ballsy. She'd respect that. Respect that with the maximum amount of power she was willing to use.

"Thunderbolt. Fantasy."

Azure energy shot out of her index claw. A mockery, a fake, a fantasy of Tribulation. And yet, even a mere image, at half strength of what Shu could do, it was Lightning of an Azure Dragon nonetheless. In a blink of an eye it raced through the space between them and landed straight in Chang's chest, as if trying to pierce through him.

He was falling? What? When did he get hit? Was it just that harmless-looking flash of light? That did him in? Not a heavy punch from this abomination that looked like a man fucked a dragon?

Damn. He can't maintain his consciousness. Darkness was setting in and his body felt weightless. He lost feeling in his fingers first then it felt like his breathing stopped for a moment. Fortunately or unfortunately, it was just a feeling, though the rapid-fire pulsations in his body didn't care for the difference.

Chang will burn this loss into his soul and use it to further himself along his road. It's because he hates losing that this moment has an important meaning to him.

Falling down on one knee, the Qinglong decided she had a love hate relationship with her new blood. Love, because damn, did it not give her a super high whenever she got to use the fraction of an Azure Dragon. Hate, because it was so little, so few, so fast. The rush of power barely lasted a blink of an eye most of the time and then she felt like a burned out forest. Wiping the sweat off her forehead, she tilted her head with worry before letting out a sigh of relief. Good, his chest was still moving, so he was breathing. Great. Speaking of breathing, Shu caught her breath. Then she nodded to herself a few times. Only one more thing to do before resting properly. She clapped her hands together a few times before looking around.

"Alright, time to tie him up."

There was no way she was going to take any chances of him bailing on her after all. He seemed the type to run away from anything he considered bothersome. She couldn't have that now. He had to give her his Dao before even thinking of leaving. Then again, she thought as she used the knots she was taught. Where was the fun in just him revealing it…?

"Shut up…" His mouth moved before his eyes opened. Chang tried to silence the worst tag-along in the world before he realized he was awake. His eyes were slow to crack open because of the annoying pain that lingered in his body. He'd get over it eventually, but damn it hurt.

The man tried to stand up.

"Wha—" His eyes shot open. Chang was a trussed up chicken. His body was bound completely and it wasn't some amateur bound that left his legs some free room for him to run away. He wouldn't be able to run in this state at all.

Panic didn't set in though. The defeated cultivator sighed in amusement.

The redhead looked up at the only person who would dare to do something like this and smirked. "You want a physical connection as well? Be gentle at least."

Shu retched, but this time managed to not puke. Pity, as she partially was inclined towards covering Chang with her bile. Alas, puking in the fortress she wanted to clean up was counterproductive. Swallowing with a disgusted look, she waved her hand with a flat look.

"The only physical connection we gonna have is through fighting, don't try to disgust the both of us."

What was it with him and those sex jokes? For someone who hated women he sure was open about fucking them apparently. Clapping her hands together, she grinned as she looked at him. She'd look down at him but even seated, the guy was a giant.

"Now I do remember asking about your Dao if I win…" Shu trailed off before giggling and crossing her hands behind her head."Buuuuut I changed my mind." Snapping her finger, she pointed at him. "I won, so you gonna help me clean this place up. I'll just have to figure out your Dao the hard way." She wiggled her finger a few times. "You're not gonna get away from me, buddy."

The fact that this guy clearly had no interest in something tedious as cleanup as well as spend time with her that wasn't sparring was just the cherry on top. Not to mention, interacting in different ways meant she'd crack his Dao in no time.

If it meant having to win sparring matches and then force him into social activity, it's a double win for Qinglong Shu.

"You better know how to get rid of dust, because this Fortress Myia has a looooot of it."

Her teasing voice left no room for objection. She would absolutely cash in her victory…for clean up services.

So…

Qinglong tied him up as a way to prevent him from skipping out on cleaning duty? If she's not here to fight or distract him in another way, then what purpose does she serve.

The redhead had to bite back a mocking laugh at the ridiculous assumption that he'd waste his precious time to help out another person for no benefit to himself.

First of all, he's not a part of this little group. Secondly, he can't clean anything as long as he's tied up. Thirdly, the moment he gets untied, he'll just be free to escape, so this whole idea of this dumb brat was pointless in the first place.

"Why didn't you just ask me my Dao instead of asking me for help?" And that's the cusp of the issue. She used a little free question that started from an unofficial challenge and bet to rope the redhead into helping her.

He could just break his word anyway, but it's not like he has anything better to do. He's feeling tired from the fights, but he wouldn't use that as an excuse to skip out on extra training.

Screw it. He really has nothing better to do. He's still thinking over things, so this calming detour should help him. What did his father say again? An eye off the road leads to a step further down the road? Sounded like bullshit to him.

"Untie me," Chang demanded. "You'd be surprised at how good I can clean."

Yep, he's only doing this for himself.

"I'll believe it when I see it," Shu replied with a scoff before untying him in a moment. Putting the broom against his hands, she shrugged casually. "And I guess I just wanna figure out your Dao the hard way." She smirked slightly. "Can't take pride in my own Dao if I take the easy way out, right?"

There was but the slightest hesitation in the redhead's movements. His hands tightened around the broom's shaft as Qinglong's words ran circles in his mind. He knows all to well about taking the easy way out, but to hear someone else talking about it – even if it doesn't pertain to his current situation – offers a certain kind of enlightenment. Definitely not the type of enlightenment that typical cultivators hold in reverence, but a more commonplace one.

It's like when somebody misses the obvious. Yup. Can't take the easy way out. Not anymore at least. Suicide's completely out of the question.

Crimson eyes rove over the dust and dirt that needs a thorough cleaning. Using only a broom would make things take longer.

"I want to take the easy way out please." It's okay for him to joke about killing himself, right? He really feels like doing it after looking at the sheer mess he and the midget caused. Cleaning this all up...well, he talked a big game. He can't bow out of this shit now even if he wants to.

More than just his own feelings, the person that's stronger than him – he'll never admit that temporary status to her face – would probably take drastic measures.

Damn it, he can't get sucked into her pace more than this!

Aretaphila Myia 15 - Closing Head (Part 1)
Aretaphila Myia 14
Closing Head (Part 1)

"Big Sis?" Mortal Kid asked.

"What is it?" Aretaphila Myia replied to the mortal child. It had been a long, long time since the young cultivator had bothered to remember the faces of the mortal villagers she got caught up with in the midst of Ju-Shui Yú's sick, decade-long game of hide and seek. It had taken months but the Qi Condensation cultivator had finally managed to use the remaining splinters of mirror to make her way slowly westward to the Clan's holdings past the Scarred Lands. She was no judge of distances or navigation, but she was sure she was getting close to the Clan's heartlands at last.

Where one of the patrolling Legions would be able to drive off the horrible Cannibal musician once and for all.

"Hey, Big Sis, are you listening to me?" Mortal Kid asked again, weird sun-beaten face twisted in doubt.

"Sure, sure." The Myia scion replied absently, mind idly considering how to further store up strength for her final sprint, "Now what were you saying, Kid?"

If anything, this caused Mortal Kid's to scrunch up even uglier than before, "It's not 'Kid', Big Sis! It's Dawei! How many times do I gotta tell you?!"

"Maybe one more," Aretaphila replied with a chuckle to herself. It wasn't as if it mattered, she had more important things to be concerned with. Every day was a constant struggle against the Devil's Music User, endlessly ringing her body out for that tiny bit of strength that left her undetected. Left her free to bit by bit build up strength for the next leap with the mirror, until finally the game would end. Until the bodies would stop piling up.

Where she could be safe.

"Big Sis!"

"Hey, Kid." Aretaphila finally had had enough, stopping her Sounding to turn a serious glare at the young mortal, "Just come out and say what you have to say, alright? I'm actually pretty busy."

Mortal Kid flinched, ugh gross, "Okay, Big Sis…" He glanced around shifty-eyed like he had some great secret he was about to share, "Well, I have this problem with another kid my age." The Qi Condensation cultivator nodded, "See. She spends all day coming up with new games that she always beats me at, or teases me, or yanks on my hair and stuff while laughing at how I react to her. It's really annoying, and I hate it. But my parents say it's just her way of telling me she likes me." Mortal Kid's face scrunches up in that ugly-look again, his lower lip quivering.

"But that doesn't make sense! I don't like her at all now! Why would I like her back if that's the way she treats me!"

"I…" Aretaphila pauises, blue eyes blinking, "See?" Her head tilts, "What does that have to do with me, then?"

"Well, you're a girl too, right Sis?" Mortal Kid says by way of explanation, "So I was wondering if you could tell me if you think my parents are right. Cultivators are suuuuuuuper smart and wise, right?"

Unbidden, a smile graces Aretaphila's lips, "Okay Kid, well said." A bronzed finger wags, "And not just because you flattered me!" Mortal Kid's cheeks dust red with a slight blush, one which the Myia scion ignores before moving on to consider the substance of the question itself.

Nearly unbidden, memories of an uptight young boy fill Aretaphila's mind's eye. Stiff backed, and endlessly trying to put on airs that she had enjoyed poking holes in with near impunity. A connection which her mother had wished to impress on her, and one which she had followed if only out of love at first. Answer in hand, she languidly lies on her side, a hand propping up her cheek as she stared at the mortal boy before her. Ignorant of so many things.

"Your parents have no idea what they're talking about," Aretaphila replied confidently, "The girl keeps on picking on you because there aren't any easier targets, you rise to the bait easily, and chances are she just doesn't have anything better to do." She smiles in fond remembrance.

"How do you know for sure?" Mortal Kid asked, suddenly nervous yet unable to contain his curiosity.

"Let me tell you about my childhood friend, Tormen'er. And his ability to make the absolutely funniest faces."

—----------------------

"Lady Cultivator," Old Man groaned, having arrived at Aretaphila's lodgings as the Sun began to set, heralding the coming of dusk and the commencement of her true job. Still, considering the favor she was doing in exchange for a place to stay, she at least expected the old mortal to pretend to be grateful to her when asking her for something.

"How can I help you, geezer?" The Golden Devil replied flippantly, her eyes shut as she tapped the Zhong of Deep Waters. It's rings endlessly reverberating within her body, agonizingly shaving off parts of her for the sake of her Sounding. Absolute pain, but a decade of practice had inured Aretaphila Myia to the practice for the sake of necessary sake. Much like engaging in this charade with a mortal of all things.

"It's about…Dawei." Old Man said with some trepidation, "You spoke with him earlier today?"

"Dawei?" Aretaphila paused, considering, "Wait, you mean the Kid?" At the Old Man's nod, "Yeah I spoke to him. I speak to him nearly every day. Why?"

The Old Man's wrinkled face puckered into a frown, "While I'm sure you only meant the best with your advice," He paused, seemingly gathering courage, "Our village isn't so populous that it can survive you meddling in the romantic affairs of our youths." For the first time in the conversation Aretaphila's eyes both opened all the way, staring into the Old Man's own gaze.

He flinched, looking away.

"The Kid was being bullied, and said his own parents were encouraging him to suck up and take it." The Myia scion rose to her feet, arms folded over her chest, "I can understand a friendly bit of ribbing between children, but trying to confuse the poor kid is just going to twist and ruin both of their lives."

"With all due respect Lady Cultivator," The Old Man said, the fires of indignation finally lending him spine enough to face her, "We know our own children somewhat better than you, and at least have experience enough with matters of the heart to not be trifled with as lightly as you have done today."

Aretaphila snorts, "You're, what, forty years old? Sixty?" The Old Man nods, "You're telling me that I'm supposed to believe that some random mortals in the middle of podunk nowhere know better than a Cultivator such as myself?"

The Old Man's face pales, "N-no, Lady Cultivator! Nothing of the sort!"

The shorter girl humms thoughtfully, "Then what did the kid do with my advice?"

"Dawei…" The elder figures voice muttered bitterly, refusing to meet Aretaphilas face, "He told the girl that he hated her. Wanting nothing to do with her bullying, and to leave him alone before he defended himself.

"The poor girl hasn't stopped crying."

"Good," Aretaphila nods, "Kid finally stood up for himself."

"And scarred the young girl, perhaps for life." The Old Man sighed, "Whatever you may think of her way of expressing it, the girl's feelings are genuine, Lady Cultivator. As a result…" Two gnarled hands rise up, palms facing one another, "What was once a distance that could be feasibly crossed has now stretched into a gaping chasm. There are not so many men in this village that the girl has hopes of finding another partner. Let alone one whom she would develop the same depth of affection for."

"So?" The Myia scion scoffed, "What does that have to do with me?"

The dim eyes of the Old Man stared at her own, searchingly. Beseechingly. But eventually they pull away, and he turns to leave. Evidently unsatisfied.

"Nothing, I suppose." He sighed, "I just wish that you would make sure to remember the child's name before warping his life so thoroughly and recklessly as you have done."

"Old Man?" She calls out, and the hunched figure of the Village Elder pauses, "I don't even remember yours."

A dry chuckle, "No. I suppose you wouldn't have, would you."

The Old Man departs as the sun finishes its descent, and Aretaphila returns to her Sounding. Scraping away her weakness bit by bit. Honestly, what was that Old Man thinking, trying to make some random girl she'd never even met her business. Well, it hardly mattered. In a few days the Old Man and Mortal Kid wouldn't matter either. She'd be gone, far away, jumping for perhaps the last time through the mirror.

And finally waking from this living nightmare.

A.N.: 1520 Words, and the first half of the finale of the Turn arc. Finally. Dunno if this is in time for the Fate Rolls later this weekend, but imo it still needed to get written anyway. As can be seen here...Aretaphila needed a whole hell of a lot of reality checks when she was younger.

Yeah. Things are complicated, and having the combination of great power and great detachment from humanity makes it easy to decide that they're not, and then not have to live with the results of that decision.

[nods]

I'd probably have been a lot more willing to side with Aretaphilia if she'd bothered to even learn the kid's name. Sure, some of it's on the girl and the kid's parents for, respectively, not being straightforward and not either talking with her or her parents to get her to do something about it before she ribbed a little too hard and alienated him as she was clearly starting to even before Aretaphilia's interference, but if somebody hasn't bothered to learn my name and I don't know for a fact that they have a terrible memory for names, I'm not going to them for advice, so I guess they all screwed up!

@TehChron did they manage to patch things up or did Aretaphilia screw the girl over permanently? Seeing as they'd have been dead for a while by now.

Janus 8 - The Good, The Bad, and The Bronze
The Good, The Bad, and The Bronze
Shen Kingdom, Year 222

"Janus, coming your way!"

Aelia's voice boomed up the valley, trailing behind the one-armed lunatic careening my way through the air. "Yeah, I-" I switched my grip, swinging my sword up underhand to catch the Blood Path cultivator's palm on the blade. "I noticed!"

The blade barely bit into the surface of the skin, his hide almost as tough as weathered leather, but hot blood gushed out like a fresh spring. It sprayed at my eyes and I jerked to the side to avoid it.

I fucking headbutt the bastard out of the air.

"Dirty skenk!" he yelled, suddenly falling as I pulled my sword back. His one-arm swung down and sank knuckle deep into the stone. I kicked at his wrist but he was already hurling himself back up, using his arm like a catapult to sail over my head.

I was moving once I saw him begin to vault upwards but my sword was gripped the wrong way, and there was no way I could switch my hold again fast enough to stop him. This set of Blood Pathers were all body cultivators, in their own fucked up and twisted ways. We'd managed to put down the first five of them by virtue of surprise and superior cultivation, but the last two were dangerously strong on their own, strong enough that it took me and Aelia just to put the first one down.

By that time, the second one had already doubled back and eaten all the others. Now he was brushing up against Foundation Building and if we let him slip away, there was no telling how strong he'd get now that he'd made it past a Great Realm bottleneck and had time to settle his foundation.

I jumped and used my sword as a balance. The blade hit the stone with a loud crack, my legs tucking into my chest as I shifted my entire weight to the one-arm holding me up on the handle. The idiot was just sailing over me when I got into position, looking down to meet my eyes.

"Eat shit," I said, and kicked him full force with both legs into the other side of the gorge.

"Incoming!" Aelia yelled.

The lunatic hauled himself out the body-sized imprint in the stone wall, sneering at me. "Foolish Devil," he chortled. "I am already beyond your meagre attempts-"

The wall exploded into dust as the spirit-steel door to their hideout crashed into him. I coughed at the billowing dust cloud, fanning it away from my face.

"Did I get him?" Aelia yelled again.

Furious red qi burst out of the stone, blowing the dust cloud away with its fervor. "Foolish Devil!" he crowed, hauling himself out the stone. "I am already beyond your meagre attempts to subdue!"

I tossed my sword up and caught it in a orthodox grip. "Nope," I yelled down.

"Shit. Hang on, there's gotta be another door."

I adjusted my stance on the outcropping of rock I'd repositioned to, overlooking the valley a mile below and the entrance to their filthy cannibal den in the valley wall. It was four li wide at its widest point, but they'd used the narrowing - only a single li across - to sneak their hideout into the shadow of the opposite side of the gorge. Outside of a few hours of the day, the place was completely invisible until you were right on top of it.

It was actually kind of clever, for maneaters.

The lunatic dug his fingers into the door that had bent around his body and peeled it away, hurling it down into the bottom of the valley. Red light shone from inside his chest and his stomach, surging energy out to his limbs. I frowned.

"Admiring my physique, Devil?" he straightened, cracking the stone around him into shape as he just stood inside the valley wall. "Not many are as talented as I at cultivating the Second Heart Inculcation. I stand before you now at the pinnacle of my art, on the verge of manifesting a third heart." He licked his lips. "I shall sate myself on yours to complete my breakthrough."

"Don't make this weird, man," I said, raising my sword. "You try to kill me, I try to kill you, and we leave it at that." My breathing was steady and unhurried, the skin across my body uniformly bronze as Reflected Purities and the Blood of Bronze worked its magic. I could hit harder, jump higher, and probably get run over by a herd of spirit oxen without noticing it but...

It wasn't enough.

The lunatic launched himself across the gorge at me, and I swung hard at his torso. The blade cut through his shoulder with a sound like eggs shattering, then stuck fast in his chest. I didn't have time for anything else before he crashed into me, hand coming up to claw at my eyes while I desperately fought to keep him from tripping me with his legs.

"Do you see now, Devil?" he laughed. "The perfection of my form? With but one hand, I can drive a paltry warrior like you to the brink. With two, I could grasp the entire world."

I blocked his slashes and swipes with one hand, keeping the other firmly on the sword in his chest. His eyes glowed red at me, but he kept his head moving constantly, too hard a target to hit when I got the opportunity to strike back. We were locked together, but I wanted the sword more than I was afraid of him, and he hadn't shown anything that could really pose a threat-

The ground exploded around me as I found myself sliding sideways, ankle deep in the stone several feet from where I was standing. The lunatic was already sailing towards me again, tongue hanging out in glee with my sword still buried in his chest. How the fuck-? No, no time.

I couldn't drop Purities to use an escape technique, so I threw my hands up across my face to block-

A spirit-steel door collided with the bastard and pinned him to the wall, Aelia hurtling into sight on the edge of the outcrop a few seconds later. "Told you there was another one."

"Took you long enough," I said, dragging my feet out of the stone to stand on solid ground.

"Sorry," she said, actually apologetic. "I saw this guy's trick and went back to pulp the other ones; make sure they stay down."

"Good thinking," I said, looking over at the lunatic as he threw the second door into the valley and began pulsing with veins of crimson light centred on his stomach. "Also, got any ideas? I don't think I can put this guy down fast, and he just pulled some shit on me that I didn't even notice."

"Kickball special?" Aelia suggested, putting her guard up as the lunatic eyed us warily. "If you can cover me, it might be enough."

"What, you can hit up three small realms now?" I asked, cracking my knuckles.

"Can't you hit down one?" I could hear the laughter in her voice, and the tension underneath it. Aelia was a lot of things, but suicidal was not one of them. Going up against a Blood Path cultivator in the Ninth Heavenstage, and a few foul meals from crossing into another great realm? This is the exact kind of scenario Aelia would slip out of, and track the target instead, if she was on her own.

Unfortunately, I didn't have her skill with escaping, stealth, or tracking but I severely outpaced her when it came to fighting. And with my superior cultivation, it meant her only viable option was to stick around and fight by my side.

"Aelia," I said, taking a step forward. "I'll-"

"If you finish that sentence, junior, by Old Gold, I swear I'll give you a taste of my shoe," she said angrily.

I stopped, eyes trained on the pather, but I turned my head slightly. "You know, I think in legends, this is where you'd swoon over how heroic I'm being."

She snorted. "Yeah, maybe if I was Jieyue," she said. "You'll need to put on your big boy pants if you want to charm me."

I chuckled, watching the pather watch us, the damned lunatic slowly standing straighter as he rebuilt his body from the damage we'd managed to make stick. We weren't just standing here shooting the shit so he could regenerate out of the goodness of our hearts; but our plan required some prep time on Aelia's part.

The speed falloff from the Blood of Bronze is overblown, exaggerrated, and also completely fuckin' true. The raw strength increase most Golden Devils get means that in the right situations, the speed difference compared to a non-clan cultivator doesn't exist. But as your cultivation improves and your Blood refines itself, you get heavier faster than other cultivators speed up and you start running real risks of getting strung out like a kite in every fight.

In effect, it meant there were a couple fake-bottlenecks for Devils to cross whenever those differences got the most extreme, points in your cultivation where you needed to solve the speed problem or you'd probably get stabbed in the gut by some guy yelling about honour or something. At that point, you needed something...special to make up the difference. A trick, a technique, or raw talent. For me, I liked to use Silent Steps Resounding - a utility technique originally invented to quiet heavy metal footsteps by flooding the ground with bronze qi and softening footsteps - in ways that it wasn't really made for.

For Aelia, well, she was a little more...direct.

The ground shook as Aelia stomped past me, skin flushed red and swirling with patterns across her body. I could see them thickening from her feet upwards, the soles already blackened from how concentrated her art was.

I took off after her, hardly two steps behind.

"Foolish Devils!" the lunatic suddenly cackled, grabbing my sword in his chest. "Absolute buffons! You've fallen victim to one of the classic blunders! You've given me time to recover, and gather my strength!" He wiggled the sword forward, loosing a few drops of blood from the massive wound before giving up on the job. "Come then, I'll rend you both limb from limb and sup on you before you succumb."

I ignored him, my eyes trained on Aelia for the signal. For as often as she complained about the rest of us coming up with insane plans, this one required close timing from both of us, and if I missed it-

"Reach!" she said, hopping into the air, bringing her legs up like a horse about to kick me.

I kicked off the ground, my metal toes digging trenches in the stone as I leapt, and dropkicked the shit out of her feet.

She shot forward like an arrow from a bow, the skin up to her thighs shifting colour to black as she absorbed the hit, the colour changing back to a fleshy whiteness as the markings rapidly climbed up her body and onto her fist. By the time I hit the ground, she'd already reached the lunatic, and her fist punched through him to crack the ground like thunder through the Heavens.

The kick threw me back near a dozen feet towards the edge of the overhang. I twisted in the air, throwing my shoulder into the ground to change my flight into a violent flip. I didn't even let it register, the mild sting from the impact not even damaging my outer bronze, and charged towards the two of them. After finally getting past her bottleneck to the Sixth Heavenstage, Aelia had advanced in her art and she could power-up any attack she could survive taking. Coming from me in the Tenth, that meant she had a decent shot at putting down the lunatic but-

I slowed to a jog, as I saw the massive woman standing with her fist through the left half of the pather's torso. A splatter of dark blood stained the wall of the valley behind him, a scattered mess of bone and flesh across it. The stench of…blood qi burned my nose, and the pile of flesh throbbed at a slow pace.

"Aaah, you bitch!" he screamed. "Fuck your mother! Fuck you! My heart! You punched out my heart!"

"No, think I missed," Aelia said, straining. I could see her trying to pull her arm back out. "Best two out of three?"

I approached slowly, circling around the pair as the lunatic struggled.

…oh, there's my sword. Aelia broke it with her punch, that's…that's great.

"Stupid cow," the lunatic spat. "You think I'll give you a second chance? You will never defeat-"

In the middle of his sentence, I saw the technique. The skin of his arm...flaying off to reveal the limb inside, hiding in the shadow of its skin-puppet like a cicada and its shell. Dense blood-qi pulsed inside it, as it angled for a blow.

Shit, from there, Aelia wouldn't be able to see it. That was a full-strike attack from someone that far outweighed her, and he even rang my bell with it. My legs were tensing, bronze qi surging down to my toes, but it wouldn't be enough. They were over a dozen steps away, the stone was too soft for me to run at full speed, and I couldn't drop Purities fast enough to use Silent Steps and make up the difference. But I had to save Aelia. So I did the only thing I could do.

I focused on my breathing.

Qi surged into the ground to reinforce my steps and power surged into my limbs, as I raced across the battle in the blink of an eye.

"-me!"

"Janus?! How did you get here? Whoa!"

"What Devilry-?! Ugh!"

My right hand intercepted his strike as I stood between them, catching his hidden blow even as my left landed three in his stomach that bent him at the waist. My fourth strike blazed with qi and menace as I struck, throwing the blow I knew would end the fight, and the crimson light in his stomach blew out to join the mess on the wall.

My qi ran rampant as I lost control, and I dropped to my knee, the bronze on my skin peeling and flaking away in painful patches as my techniques all broke at once. "Nngh, fuck," I groaned.

"Janus," Aelia panted, after a second. "What was that?"

"Ecstasy of Bronze," I said, chuckling after a moment. "What a ride. I don't even know what I just did. Or…I know, but…how the hell did I do it?"

I pushed myself back to my feet and shoved the Blood Path cultivator's corpse off me, taking a moment to stomp his head into paste.

"Good job taking out his heart," I said, turning to look back at Aelia. She gave me a grin and winced, one hand held against a bloody spot on the side of her tunic. I swore.

"Any chance that offer of swooning's still open?" she asked.

I started to respond, but her eyes drifted shut as she pitched forward, and I had to ignore the metallic grinding and surge of pain from inside my arms as I caught her and hoisted her into my arms.

I tilted my head back, looking at the several hundred foot climb up the valley to our supply camp, and ignored the sudden churn in the pit of my stomach. "'I should stay with the Legions'," I complained to myself. "'The people are great, and the job isn't even that hard!' Fucking dumb-ass scout postings."

From the lack of a twinge from my shoulder, even the seal knew my heart wasn't in it.

==============================

"You're fortunate, young cultivator," the Medico said, with a shake of her head. "Reaching beyond your grasp is a road fraught with perils and dangers. I've seen other men crippled for the rigours you've put your body through."

"I am pretty incredible," I said, flexing and stretching my hands. I could feel the remnants of the technique burnt into my arms, the bronzed muscles beneath mostly mortal skin. My elbow burned with every twitch of my fingers. "So, how long until I recover?"

"You-you haven't listened to a word I've said, have you?" the Medico frowned.

"Of course I did," I scoffed. "Why, was it important?"

The woman rubbed her forehead, stretching and flattening the wrinkles. She was surprisingly old-looking for a cultivator, like some of the oldest mortals I'd ever seen. Wrinkled, lined, and saggy dark skin, but with a constant metallic shine to it that betrayed her as one of us. "Look," she said, then started over. "You're not hurt. You will never recover."

"What?" I sat up straight on the stool.

"The techniques you're using," she said, pausing. "The Reflected Purities and Ecstasy of Bronze techniques are part of an antediluvian legacy. The tale goes that an old immortal found a child within a golden apple, and brought them home to their husband. They-" She looked at my face, and huffed. "In short, they infused the child with their blood but it was insufficient for them to truly utilize clan techniques. The immortals crafted a line of techniques to refine and concentrate the essence of the Blood, until it stripped away the mortal and non-Bronze impurities. Do you understand?"

"Sure, but what's that got to do with me?"

She placed her hands on her knees and leaned forward, gritting her teeth. "It refines. Thin. Blood. You? Your affinity for the Blood of Bronze was already significant." She reached up and brushed her hand on the front of my - admittedly shiny - hair. I swiped at her, grimacing as my entire arm lit up with pain. "You've taken a method for polishing a stone and applied it to gold."

I leaned back. "Look, I don't have anything against older women but-"

She reached over and grabbed my nose, twisting it.

"Ow, fuck, ow, okay, not flirting."

"Youngster. I will say this as simply as I can. You will not heal because your body is not injured. Bronze flesh is the next stage of your natural growth, to be achieved once your cultivation had progressed enough to sustain it. You have leapt beyond your station, forcing your body too far beyond its limits, and now you suffer from the strain." She let go of my nose, and I rubbed it gently to get the blood flowing again. "Your only solution is to become strong. Cultivate until you match the level your body has begun to brush up against, and reaffirm your foundation."

"Oh," I said, looking at my hands and flexing my fingers again. "Well, why didn't you just say that?" The Medico gave me a final look, before rising from her own stool to cross the cramped tent.

It had taken us 4 days to cross the desert to civilization, or something like it. On the second day, I'd gotten close enough to the rest of the squad for Remus' voice to ring through my earrings. With directions from the rest of the squad, we made good time from the outer edge of the scouting perimeter back towards the roaming tent town of…whatever legion this was.

Or, I made good time. Aelia was unconscious the whole way, pulsing red light and infrequent gushes of blood from the hole in her stomach. Fortunately, the war effort meant that a good number of Legions had moved up into vassal lands to assail the Jingshen so medical help wasn't long in coming.

I've never...seen someone get treated before. I've been shipped off to all manner of back-alley quacks, qi specialists, crook-eyed alchemists, and even a handful of genuine Legion medicos - but generally, it was me getting patched up. Watching Aelia's face as they cut out the fucked up blood poison that was turning her into meat soup from the inside out, before it took something too important for her to recover from?

I'd rather be the one on the table.

And now on top of that, I'd managed to push myself so hard I'd almost wrecked myself taking down a single Blood Path cultivator of a lower cultivation level. Sure, I'd finally managed the damn Ecstasy, and in a real fight, but I didn't even save my one giant friend. How long would it take either of us to recover? Was it even worth it?

"Nngh, what the hell hit me," Aelia groaned.

I was up and across the tent before I realized, getting an annoyed look and forceful elbow from the Medico as she rubbed an incredibly foul blue ointment around the edges of the wound.

I took a half-step back. "Aelia? Still alive?"

"Think so," she groaned, lifting her head off the bed. "Why do you sound like someone killed your puppy?"

"Been drinking," I lied. "You had the medicos worried, for a second there."

"Yeah?" she asked, lying back down.

"They weren't sure they had a bed your size."

She lay there with her eyes closed for a second, then laughed once. "Yeah."

I started to say something and swallowed it. I dropped down into a squat, silent for a few moments, unsure of what to say. I didn't want to have to bury her. It made me real happy she was still alive. I wanted to spend more time with her.

But what came out was, "Aelia, marry me?"

I ignored the sudden urge to strangle myself, watching Aelia frown. "Uh huh. Yeah, okay." My heart jumped. Then, "Remus is coming. Has new orders. Did you say something?"

"Uh, no," I said quickly, glaring at the Medico as she covered up a laugh.

"Oh," Aelia shifted in place, wincing and holding her stomach. The Medico gently pushed her hand away and unrolled a wad of bandages. "Thought you- nevermind."

I looked at her lying in place, figuring out what I was even trying to say.

"Hiss," a voice said from behind me, a hand tapping me on the cheek.

I flinched, pain spreading up my arm, as I reflexively grabbed Si's wrist and gently let it go.

"Hiss," she said, annoyed.

"Yeah, well don't sneak up on me," I said, looking at her. "You've gotten better. Almost good enough to not get us killed by a Jingshen dog or some bloodhungry Blood Pather."

Si smiled-.

"Almost," I said, pointing over my shoulder at her. "Keep practicing. You still haven't mastered the Walk Without Rhythm, and you can't cross the deep desert like that."

Si snarled at me, crossing her arms, and sending the maroon peplos she'd found somewhere fluttering.

"Do you like the clothes, Janus?" Remus asked, walking into the tent on light, bouncing steps. "You should. You paid for it."

"I did what-?" I spat.

"Aelia," Remus looked down at her. "Officially, you're suspended from active duty until you recover. Get some rest." One hand rose and gave a thumbs-up, before Remus continued. "Unofficially? The war is starting, and we're moving fast. We can't spare you two from the effort, so you'll be on logistics."

"What does that mean? I don't know shit about cooking," I frowned.

"Quite," Remus said, pausing. "Lost your sword again, I see."

"Hey, this time it wasn't my fault. Aelia broke it."

"Mhm," he said, flicking his wrist and tossing a sword at me. I spun around on my heels, catching the bronze-gilded handle with one hand, feeling the heavier weight of the blade in my grip. A full Spatha instead of my typical Gladius, weightier and better suited for cleaving and hacking than simple slashes or cuts. A scroll dangled from the end by a thin red rope.

"What's this?" I asked, pulling it loose.

"Your new orders," Remus replied.

I unrolled it as I stared at him, turning it around to face him. "Yes, and?"

"What do you mean?" he asked, smiling at me. I gave him a flat look, the two of us staring at each other as time dragged on. Si hissed something and I opened my mouth to speak, when he cut me off. "You'll be guarding our supply lines into and out of Jingshen territories. I imagine you'll need some time to reflect and recover from your injuries."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "How do you know I'm injured?"

"I expected you to be," Remus said, walking over and patting my shoulder as he went by. "You are, not to withhold praise, quite talented at manipulating Bronze qi and applying mortal modes of thought to battle."

"But?" I asked, frowning.

Remus paused, raising an eyebrow while keeping his gaze- his eyes- his…blindfold pointed at Aelia's wound. "There is no exception, Janus. Talent does not always lead one to solid ground. Sometimes, it drags you out to the most treacherous of shifting sands and you must fight to survive."

I rolled the scroll back up in my hand, tucking it into a pocket on my trousers and hanging the sword from my belt. I wasn't certain, but it...sounded like Remus was...saying he expected me to over-refine my Blood? He suggested the damn techniques to me, did he set me up to-?

"Don't overthink it, junior," Remus said quietly. My earrings rang quietly like chimes, his voice emanating from them. "And good work in returning Aelia to us. Thank you."

I huffed, running a hand through my hair. I turned to leave-

The Medico cleared her throat, looking at me, then at Aelia expectantly.

I paused, looking at her, then looked back at my squadmate. "Hey, Aelia," I said. "This is me charming you."

There was a moment of silence in the tent, before Aelia gave another silent thumbs-up and the Medico laughed at the look of confusion on my squad leader's face.

The quest to catch up to Current Turn continues. I think I'm about done with the stuff that was supposed to drop turn 12, which means the next stuff I had planned and effectively the first...arc? for Janus.

The Waxing Households and Bloodlines of the Golden Devil Clan, Circa 280 E.K. - Aurelius Pupillis
The Waxing Households and Bloodlines of the Golden Devil Clan

Circa 280 E.K1

By Aurelius Pupillus

This is an age of ascension. Silver-blooded Cores and Foundation Building Kings walk among us even as the Optimatoi gain control over the entirety of the Organ Meat Desert. In these times of rising strength for the clan, one begins to wonder about those whose influence begins to rise with it. While there are certainly individual centurions and legates who hold high influence, what this author wonders on are the households and bloodlines of the clan who are waxing with it.

The purpose of this record is to not only identify the great bloodlines that guard the clan such as the Xie, the Callista, the Tauros and many others, but also to potentially identify the many lesser known families growing in power on the backs of their young heroes. Those who will one day perhaps become the shields of the Optimatoi, as identified by their most modern and illustrious members.

Below this, we have placed a curated list of all the movers and shakers you need to be aware of in the Golden Devil Clan. Please see the format of the family presentation below:

HOUSE AMBROSIUS

Legate Antonius Ambrosius
No Motto
No Sigil

HISTORY:

House Ambrosius was born three hundred years ago when the young Centurion Ambrosius wished to establish his own legacy and create his house. Though Ambrosius had many children, after he passed away in the centennial trials in 0 EK, few chose to inherit his legacy. Most of his children used their inheritance to set themselves up with rich mortal lives or joined the clan's administrative apparatus and only Emmanuel, his youngest son, chose to take up the mantle of legionnaire. Emmanuel himself passed away a hundred years later in 95 EK, a victim of a blood path traitor. He left his inheritance to his then young son, Antonius Ambrosius.

DESCRIPTION:

The Legacy of this house revolves around the unique cultivation and martial arts style created by Ambrosius called the Body-building Bronzesmith. The style had been made by studying many bloodline manipulation techniques and martial arts styles in order to create a cultivation art that enhanced the density of bronze within the body (increasing its weight as a side effect) and a fighting style to best use that state to one's advantage. However, since Antonius Ambrosius, the only inheritor of the house cannot use the technique due to his unique mutation, the future of the technique and thus the House, remains uncertain.

HOUSE TAUROS, Architecti Labyrinthum

Matriarch Ariadne Tauros
"Blood Above Heart but None Above Bronze."
A Red Spiral on an Black Field

HISTORY:

Once there was House Minos, the remnant of a long-forgotten and far more ancient House. They dealt with all things to do with death - investigating suspicious deaths, dealing with ghosts and recording the wills and histories of the fallen. But above all of that they dealt with the procurement of the corpses of fallen legionnaires and the processing of the energies accumulated in their bodies to be later used in arrays, the forging of tools from precious Gravebronze or the manipulation of the bloodline itself. House Tauros was a branch born from the oak that was Minos.

Asterios the Undying Bull was the youngest child of the last Minos Patriarch and also the least talented of his siblings, reaching merely Spirit Severing and progressing no further whereas his elders were to be the next leaders of the clan. Nevertheless, he stood unmatched among his peers having a will that could not falter and his bloodline adapted - granting him incredible toughness and strength to match.

When in a Tempering Trials that occurred long ago, he stood beside his sister Ariadne and faced down a Spirit Bull of a higher realm using a version of what would become the house's personal formation. While her father, the legendary Minos was facing an enemy of equal power, she and Asterios, held it down until her father could intervene. With this feat, she gained the right to form her own house and took the name of Tauros after the bull they defeated.

As a warrior known for his stubbornness and his ability to rise from defeat, Asterios was obsessed with the clan's own survival. He dedicated his House to producing powerful warriors who could defend the clan and array-masters who could ensure that the clan's defenses would not falter after the Tempering Trials every century. In time, the House grew in number and even outlasted its parent House becoming the family we know today.

After the fall of House Minos, much of the duties kept by them were taken up by others but House Tauros retained the processing and manipulation of Bronze. They still greatly respect the dead however and it is known for them to keep the wills of their fallen and to face ghosts in their territories.

DESCRIPTION:

Both situated in Waycastle Taurus, the 96th legion and the House itself has been considered one and the same for millenia, kept under control of the family by the aggressive recruitment of their own blood. While there is usually a mark-up on requisition points when recruited family to prevent nepotism, the house maintains a specific fund and reserve to ensure they can meet the increased cost. They are assigned to one of smaller cohorts within the legion - each dedicated to a specific speciality of the family. Details of those cohorts can be seen here with the most seen being the cohorts of array engineers who fix the clan's defenses after the trials and the most famous being the seventh cohort containing the famous array-combatants who can use the house's formations in battle.

Much of this is tolerated due to the family's traditional devotion to the clan as a whole, to the point that the house considers the increased cost a patriotic duty. It is also because of the usefulness of their family arts. As long as it's led by an elder in Core Formation, the Labyrinthine Thread technique practiced by the Taurus family can create a metaphysical web of qi that allows sharing of power akin to the clan formations but put to use in the creation of arrays. Though famous for its use in battle during its foundational myth, it is most often used outside of that due to the modern variation's vulnerability to the slightest tremor in one's dao heart. Primarily, its use is during array creation and maintenance where it allows incredible feats of productivity that are often crucial in the wake of the Hundred Year Trials. Still, most of the clan knows of its seventh cohort, those iron-hearted warriors who wield strings of bronze as weapons and can arrange them into arrays swiftly enough to dynamically account for battle.

The House has also inherited a unique bloodline of the clan - the Eyes of Ariadne, a divinatory bloodline that allows it to 'see the truth of all things'. In practice, this means an increased sensitivity to flows of qi to the level only surfacing on others at nascent souls. It not only allows them great insight into qi in general from techniques to arrays, but also intent and the movements of greater powers, often allowing them to intuit the plans of others even as they are in motion. With the blood of bronze weakening however, this has also left them more vulnerable to greater powers, causing most with this bloodline to die at birth from exposure to the curses save for a few unshakable scions every few generations who are always great talents (for example, the previous Legate and Matriarch Wilhemina). While the curses have limited this inheritance, it has not stopped the house's speciality in esoteric arrays such as those of ghosts, divination, bloodline manipulation and others, though they tend to fall short in comparison to specialists such as the Zeno.

These circumstances have made the house both curiously superstitious and farsighted. For example, children are always named in the tongue of the third sea such as Xiao Long or Xiao Li. Only upon completing basic training and joining the legion properly, they take upon the name of the house and a first name in the ancestral tongue befitting of the child's ambitions such as the current Matriarch taking upon the name of Ariadne, their ancestor. This is done because they believe that taking upon an ancestral name marks the child in the eyes of heaven and they hope to shield them, until they are ready to face the world themselves. Whether this is a correct belief is difficult to say, however the worth of their other actions are more easily seen.

An example of such is the system of 'Heir'. The House has several dao that are considered traditional by them and treasures to aid in their cultivation. To become traditional, it requires a member to become core formation or higher and leave an inheritance for those who might wish to pursue that same dao after them. This has been remarkably successful in speeding cultivation, as while all carve their own path to heaven, those from the same starting place often take similar routes. The Heir then is the most talented centurion who is walking one of these traditional paths and with access to stockpiled resources, can swiftly break through to Core Formation upon the demise of the previous Legate. This is a system born in the environment of the centennial trials and has allowed it to thrive through the years.

Currently, there is no designated heir for the Tauri as the previous heir Ariadne Taurus, broke through in the trials before last. There is much competition between the heir candidates to see who will succeed her with the most obvious frontrunner being Antonius Ambrosius Taurus, but while his dao is a traditional one or at least, inspired by traditional beliefs, his innovative single pillar cultivation method makes it difficult to predict how his cultivation will proceed in the future and so, the debates regarding the next Tauri heir still rages on.

NOTABLES:

Ariadne Tauros, current Family Matriarch, Mid Core Elder with the Dao of Creation (The Ties That Bind All Things). As her name may suggest, her goals involve regaining the arts once used by her ancestor and recreating the feats she had performed. As the ancestor was at the very least a nascent soul and used a formation of multiple cores, she is quite ambitious.

Corvina Taurus, Heir Candidate and Late Foundation Expert. She is the only inheritor of the Eyes of Ariadne currently with the clan and has reached her current position in merely two hundred years. While pursuing the Dao Of Curses through the study of the curses of heaven, she is not pursuing a traditional dao, however the Eyes of Ariadne has its own set of inheritances that supersede the previous requirement.

Antonius Ambrosius Taurus, Heir Candidate and Single Pillar King. Though the only member of House Ambrosius, he is part of the house through his grandmother by blood and mother by connection to the current matriarch. He has performed many great feats in service to the clan and is a promising seed. [GOOD SEED]

Nicomedes Tauros, Peak Foundation Expert and Blood Path Traitor. Betrayed the clan on the eve of the disastrous trials at 100 EK by poisoning and attempting to consume Emmanuel and Eleanora Ambrosius, now passed away from the poison. Sworn enemy of both Antonius and Ariadne Tauros, he escaped justice through use of known clan resources during the clan's infrastructure issues after the trials and joined the Blood Cannibals. Was one of the Bandits threatening the conquered territories after their defeat and is currently missing, likely in the Great Battlefield. KILL ON SIGHT

Myriad others.

HOUSE THEODOROS, Vanguard of the Legion

Centurion Tormenos Theodoros
"By the Oath of Iron." (Current), "Born in Battle, Bred for War." (Old)
Three Red Seals shaped like a Winged Shield

HISTORY:

House Theodoros harkens back to the earliest days of the Sea Conquering Army, and possesses some of the largest and oldest records in the annals of the Optimatoi, however these origins are shrouded in mystery due to age, loss, mythmaking and the obscurations of Heaven. What little is known of their formation tells the tale of Theodora, First of her Name.

An Elder of an unstated Realm, Theodora was once but one Legate of many, who oversaw a great many of the conquests in the Imperator's name. As she ventured into the lands of a world now forgotten to us, she and her Legion faced the fury of a Divine Dragon, their battle lasting five seasons before she tasted victory, her body quenched in its heartblood as divine lightning shuddered through her bones.

Upon her return, Theodora would herself carry the carcass of the Dragon back before the Imperator, where she would present it to him to demonstrate her loyalties, now and forever. Suitably impressed by both her strength and her deference, the Imperator granted her two triumphs: First, he would have the Earl of Bronze anoint her and her heirs with a blessing that echoed her triumphs, blessing them with unending endurance and prowess in battle. Then, he would appoint her as the Praefectus Praetorium, Commander of his Praetorian Guard, and charged her with carrying his banner to battlefields near and far, delivering his will and his voice to the far reaches of the Coloneia. As part of these duties, she would need to find Legionnaires who embodied her virtues of loyalty and vitality. These she would find, and in them she would imbue the Blood of Iron with the Earl of Bronze's blessing and charter.

From these, the Vanguard were assembled, the vaunted ancestors of the Iron Legions of old. And amongst these were House Theodoros, the heirs and successors of Theodora's mission, who would go from strength to strength and know no life but that at the forefront of battle as the tip of the spear and the mail about the fist. From then on, her life and theirs would be one of unending battle in the name of the Imperator, their loyalties not once questioned, their purpose not once in doubt, for they were truly born in battle and bred for war. And even after Theodora fell, to battle or to treachery was never recorded, the Theodoroi continued her eternal mission, the only mission that will ever matter: The destruction of the enemies of the Imperator.

DESCRIPTION:

Any discussion of House Theodoros must first delineate between What They Were, and What They Now Are.

As They Were, House Theodoros was the premier source of Heavy Infantry available to the Optimatoi even after the extinction of the Blood of Iron, whose properties beyond the broad strokes are forgotten to this record, and managed a number of Waycastles and territories along the western edge of the Organ Meat Desert and the Great Scorpion Road. This allowed them to tax the difference and maintain three well-equipped and well-trained Legions to their name - the most notable of them being the 47th Legion 'Steelbacks', once the foremost of the Clan's heavy assault infantry skilled in shock assault and irregular combat before they were wiped out the last man in one of the Cannibal Crushing Wars - to their name at their height.

However, even as the distinguished and notable House they were, the Theodoroi were fast diminishing; an unknown malaise or curse had long plagued House Theodoros and the other inheritors of the Blood of Iron, ensuring their Scions struggled to confront Heavenly Tribulation and limiting the ability of House Theodoros to maintain a sufficient strength of Elders or even Experts. Such was this burden that the Theodoroi have not raised a Nascent Soul in an incalculably long time; the last Theodoros Nascent Soul, Elissa Theodoros, died in battle many millennia before the Clan was chased from Turtlebone Mountain, and none have shown the ability to shatter their Core since. Indeed, it has been a long time since a Theodoros served as part of the Clan's Inner Circle, when such appointments had apparently been relatively commonplace long, long ago.

The turning point came over a thousand years ago, during the Reign of Archgetes Constantine, when the last of the Theodoroi Core Formation Elders, Nagaeon Theodoros, died in the midst of a Rite of Karmic Purification at the hands of a Fifth Sea Hunter, and his heir, Simian Theodoros, perished in the midst of Tribulation. After that, the Theodoroi fractured entirely, with Branch Families abandoning their names entirely and scattering to the four corners of Optimatoi lands, while the Main Family was left to fallow amidst empty forts and open graves. The territories of the Theodoroi were summarily redistributed, for the once-great House was no longer capable of administering them to the satisfaction of the Clan.

As They Are, House Theodoros is a decrepit corpse facing an imminent demise in quiet, undignified fashion. The Main Branch now numbers only three, lead by Simian's great-great-great grandson Tormenos, himself a mere Expert albeit one in the Great Circle. Were it not for the peerless talents of its current crop of twin talents, the extinction of this family would be inevitable within the next three generations. Holding only their ancestral estate and a small Spirit Stone Mine to their name, the House Theodoros of the present day pales in comparison to many younger families, and the only distinction they have from other minor Houses are the number of ancestors who watch them in judgeful disappointment and the past glories that can only drive them to greater shame.

With their meager income of resources and their reserves running dry, the House is a pathetic shadow of a shadow, incapable of maintaining a mortal staff of auxiliaries to tend their remaining lands and supporting its Cultivators at the same time. Rightfully, it has continued to dedicate these resources into their scions in search of a brilliant new Talent to drag the family back to prominence, albeit thus far to little avail.

Indeed, as the Theodoroi have not raised a Core Formation Elder of their own in over a thousand years, they have no personal stocks of Celestial Bronze to infuse into their new scions and must beg and barter from the reserves of the Clan and other Houses in order to do so, either by calling upon old debts or trading their dwindling reserves. This practice has inspired fears that they are diluting their own ancestral legacy, but it is a tautological argument either way; the Blood of Iron was long lost even before the current state of affairs and will not be restored through something as paltry as an eugenics program.

The only hope the House has now are its current crop of talents, Rathos and Katha Theodoros, twin children of the late genius Riala who have each of them inherited some of the family's forgotten eminence themselves. Both of them have reached the Ninth Heavenstage in mere decades, Katha in particular leaping into the Twelfth within a single decade and awakening the long-lost Blood of Iron besides. In them lies the possibility of a restoration of the House.

But this is not the first time that the fortunes of the Theodoroi have seemed to turn since the death of their Last Core; indeed, this is the third generation said to be 'talented' that the Theodoroi have sired within the regency of Archgetes Manuel Konstantinos alone. The current Patriarch Tormenos was himself such a talent, building seven Dao Pillars by his second century where even the geniuses of his generation - names like Rina Callista, Hektor Sarantapechos, and Xiao Yi, later Jin Muyi - were still in on their first or third before he realized that he would never be able to survive the Tribulation to cross into Core Formation. His own daughter, Riala, was often remarked to be a second coming of Rina Callista, before she tragically perished during one of the Archgetes' 'special' lectures, immediately prior to the second Rite of Karmic Purification since the Archgetes claimed the Regent Throne. Even in the present day, the young Katha - the tremendous talent who leapt eleven Small Realms in a single decade - was badly maimed by a Genius scion of the Jingshen in a recent foray into the Qiguai Secret Realm, leaving her cultivation base badly maimed and setting her progress back by decades.

As it stands, the star of the Theodoroi has begun to rise once more, but only time will tell if that is the triumphant return of a fallen house, or the last gasp of a dried-up corpse.

House Theodoros currently maintains no formal Headquarters, for they barely qualify as a House, without even branches to their name. Their family holdings include a small Spirit Stone Mine, the village by it, and the Family Estate.

NOTABLES:

Tormenos Theodoros, current Family Patriarch and grandfather of Rathos and Riala. Foundation Establishment 7-Pillar (Great Circle) and a retired Centurion of the 3rd Legion 'Farflung Death'. Dedicated to the restoration of the Theodoroi to the point of obsession.

Riala Theodoros, eldest daughter of Tormenos and mother of Rathos and Katha. Foundation Establishment True 1-Pillar. (d. 187 E.K.)

Saria Duca (Formerly Theodoros), second daughter of Tormenos and younger sister of Riala. Core Formation Misty Core (Early) and in possession of a strange Silver Blood variant. Estranged and uninterested in leading the House.

Rathos Theodoros, current Heir and twin brother of Katha. Foundation Establishment 1-Pillar. (Early)

Katha Theodoros, true identity of the enigmatic Centurion XXI (501st Legion 'Dawn's Fist') and twin sister of Rathos. 13th Heavenstage. [GOOD SEED]

HOUSE MYIA, Songs of the Battlefield

Legate Aretaphila Myia
"You Shall Know Our Voice"
Crimson Banner topped by a Black Bell

HISTORY:

House Myia is primarily notable for serving as a test case of the successful integration of barbaroi bloodlines and auxilia into the larger organization of the Imperial Optimatoi extending into known prehistory based on fragments of myth retained by the Dawn Fortress, the Myia Clan itself, and curiously the existing Theodoros Houses as well. While the most storied families of the Blood can trace their origins back to the original invasion of the Turtle World, before the conquest of the Nine Seas began what would later be known as the bloodline of the Aquilifier.

Strictly speaking, the Houses origins lie with a Sea Conquering Army Officer of unknown rank and cultivation - Blacksmith Leontius, who had taken on a wife or mistress from the denizens of the Turtle World. For what purpose is lost to time, but the result of that union lies with the true founder of House Myia, Endymion of the Ringing Sky. It is said that he was the pioneer of the usage of Demonic Tunes amongst the Legions, and was the very first Primo Auxilia in those ancient times. Eventually his deeds and loyalty were proven true over the course of many campaigns, and House Myia was formally adopted into the ranks of the Imperial Optimatoi.

What is known of his life and that of his descendents is largely lost to time and the Clan's many indignities over the millennia. However, what is known is that over time the House Myia became inseparable from the Vanguard, said to be the only family willing and able to follow the in the steps of the Iron Bloods legendary recklessness and lust for the thick of battle. Like the Iron Blooded, the bearers of the Clear Summer Bell's Constitution came to settle in the Third Sea, placing their headquarters there to take advantage of the logistical nexus of spatial gates present, using it as a forward operating base with which to launch strikes at the Seas with impunity.

This came to an end with advent of the House's first and last Hero who surpassed Spirit Severing; Sophitia Myia - said to have mastered every aspect of the the House's inherent gifts to their maximum potential, even taking advantage of their unique Sounding method of body cultivation to forge a unique variant of Gravebronze, the technique for which lead to the construction of the Gate of Blood among…A certain other treasure held by another power.

What truly sealed the Fate of the House however, was the period of Soup Chef's rise and genocide in the region, the fallout of which included the inadvertent and irrevocable destruction of the Myia's ancestral homes. Precipitating their transformation into the modern Ash-Choked Peaks, and the loss of many of the family's secrets and Heroic Dirges.

The modern family until recently was hunted down for sport and profit by those who sought to use their inherent gifts to forge Demonic Tunes tools of surpassing potency, nearly rending the Myia extinct in their entirety. Leaving their hopes in the family's sole remaining scion - Aretaphila Myia, the current Silver King who has lead the House's reputation to see something of a resurgence in recent years.

DESCRIPTION:

It's important to consider that the Myia have always been defined by their need to prove themselves, inherited from Endymion and the legacy of his mad drive to prove himself equal to the rest of his Bronze Blooded brethren. This manifests itself in the lionization of intense bouts of recklessness and over the top risk taking. One that is not well matched to their variant of the Blood of Bronze.

The Clear Summer's Bell Constitution reconstitutes the bronze alloy of flesh emblematic to Cultivators of the Optimatoi into a resonant structure incredibly well suited to the magnification of Demonus Tunes techniques. In exchange for this specialization, the rigidity and durability that the Blood is known for are lost. Though the drawbacks of lacking speed and the near-peerless regeneration are also retained. On top of this specialization, the Myia possess two cultivation techniques. The first is a Qi based Cultivation technique suited to the Blood within them, the second is a physical form of cultivation known as Sounding, which consists of refining and carving the Clear Summer's Bell Constitution into a more perfect instrument for the amplification of Demonic Tunes. It can be said that for every Legionnaire who reaches the 9th Heavenstage, the Myia must invest twice the effort to achieve the same result.

Though the results often speak for themselves upon reaching the rank of Expert, and their bodies manifest the ability to use Demonic Tunes to strike at the Soul to attack or bolster as they will.

House Myia are the historical Aquilifer of the Clan, raising the standards and flags of the Legion as a focus for their Demonic Tunes to bolster their fellows as well as enhance the strength of it's Formations in battle. It is said that the Myia once possessed a technique which could raise the Cultivation of their compatriots to the baseline of its greatest officers, but that technique is lost. Though there are rumors that Aretaphila Myia has access to a similar Art, given reports of the legendary Stand at Pleuron in the 99th Year of Manuel Konstantinos' stewardship of the Clan.

Unfortunately, this role often served to validate the reckless nature inherent to House Myia. Often leading them to make stands with their Legions up until the last moments of any doomed action, as well as notably drawing the attention of any peer or greater opponents who would often strike at a Myia Aquilifer with impunity in order to weaken the rest of their unit with their loss. It is said that the stories of a Myia scion recklessly attempting to duel a barbaroi cultivator by dueling them with their Legion's flag before perishing "in badass fashion" are beyond counting. Needless to say, it is the rare Myia that died of a wound to their back.

NOTABLES:

Aretaphila Myia: Silver King, Third Reinforcement of the Single Pillar Path. Current Legatus of the DI Legio. - Fist of Dawn. Currently driven to restore the House Myia to prominence by whatever means necessary, as well as mastery of the [Heaven Shaking Song]. On the market for a husband. [GOOD SEED]

HOUSE REX, Those Who Climb

Legate Potiorus Rex
"Gazing Down From The Shoulders of Giants"
Five jagged lines, resembling the tearing of claws

HISTORY:

House Rex is relatively new as far as families of the Clan go, but the name itself is one with a considerable legacy to it. A common name for branch houses of Legionnaires in the ancient past, the name of "Rex" was as ubiquitous when the Clan was more numerous as the name "Outi" is in modern times. Though lacking the stigma.

The current - and notable - House Rex of the Western Foothills is defined largely by the efforts of their Patriarch and House Head, Potorious Rex. A talented Centurion at the time of the Clan's near collapse after 99 RK, Potorious Rex near single handedly rebuilt the Clan's deployment and control over the northern Scorpion Road despite being a mere Foundation Establishment Expert who even lacked a Legion to his name. Through a combination of shrewd negotiations and incredible charisma he was at the front of the line for the Clan's experiments into assigning Legatus commissions to talented Centurions, being awarded the control of the 353rd Legio, and the Black Keep. Serving as the keystone of the Clan's defenses in its northern holdings. A role he fulfilled with aplomb, and upon reaching Core Formation shortly before the beginning of the Cannibal Extermination War, was awarded the title of Legatus Augusti Pro Praetor of the Clan's Northern Territories.

Broadly considered one of the most powerful Core Formation Elders in the Clan, one wonders what he is up to after all but dissolving and rebuilding the 353rd from scratch in the leadup to the Jingshen War.

DESCRIPTION:

House Rex is a bloodline defined by the traditional features of the Blood of Bronze. Broad of build, tall of height. Exaggerated proportions and musculature as compared to the barbaroi of the Region, the scions of House Rex are every bit the consummate Legionnaire. Owing to the House's relative youth, the Rex are deep in the throes of the nouveau riche part of their development, beginning to churn out a bevy of Young Masters as the House seeks to establish itself into the long term. Though lacking in any great talents, it is expected to be only a matter of time before a talented Seed arises from their ranks to become the heir apparent of Potorious Rex, who in spite of his oft-rumored shady business dealings is notable for keeping the 353rd a scrupulous meritocracy. With the securing of the entirety of the desert and the Mountainwall seeing unprecedented traffic and taxes from the Great Battlefield, the wealth that House Rex possesses is nearly incomparable to any one of its less established peers.

NOTABLES:

Potorious Rex, Core Formation Fused Core - Great Circle, Legatus Augusti Pro Praetor of the Clan's Northern Territories and the CCCLIII Legio - The Defiant Slayers of Giants. Master of the Black Keep, Patriarch of House Rex of the Western Foothills. Determined to raise his House to prominence as the sole House Rex of the Imperial Optimatoi.

THE BROTHERHOOD, The Aspiring Builders

(no longer the Brotherhood of Sand, Dirt and Dust)
The First Builder/The First Brother, Xi-Wang
"One For All"/"All for One"/ "Everyone is a Brother" (each member focuses on one in particular)
A Green-Gold Hammer with a head made from Devil's blood.

HISTORY:

Though not technically a House, and certainly unique amongst the Clan's long history, it would be remiss to exclude the Brotherhood from this record.

They began less than 100 years ago, as a group of kids that decided to help each other as much they possibly could. While also trying to Cultivate, despite being almost completely ignorant of how.

Their greatest success in this period, at least according to them, was meeting a spirit beast that worked as a beast of burden, who they now call their Great Master.

Their first trial was listening to a cruel Core Elder from another sect that tried, as harshly as he could, to tell them how hard it is to become a Core Formation cultivator. He left after he made sure that all the kids were crying. But the Elder did not realise that those children were crying tears of happiness, for those children were content with just becoming cultivators. The Qi Condensation stage was already everything they could wish for. And said elder had commented that it would be far easier than entering the core realm.

The second trial that they had was discovering the cost of spirit stones. With that information, their leader, Xi-Wang, decided that they would become cultivators without using those 'evil stones'. For otherwise, there would be disparity among the family.

For years they worked and they grew in numbers, their overzealous mentality and the fervor of their work raising them head and shoulders above the other mortal workers. The community they were making convinced many to become part of 'the Brotherhood of Sand, Dirt and Dust'. And also convinced the new brothers to work as hard as two or more mortals, to give each member the time they needed to cultivate and progress.

Still, if that was all, then they would just be another mortal group to be forgotten. And for a time. it was forgotten.

They called it 'The time of disbelief', an era of much shame among the original members of the Brotherhood. Many decided to leave, for they had earned them 'just' a lot of gold and other mortal merits and that allowed many to retire comfortably.

With a smaller group, those who remained, the five sworn brothers, finally had the time to focus on raising their own families. Like the first brother marrying the thirteen 'brother' (sister), who bore him a kid that they nicknamed 'Little One'. With time, however, they noticed that the child they had produced was a tremendous talent, and more importantly possessed a fire inside himself that burned strongly. Seeing this, the First Builder himself decided to retire as the leader of the group, entrusting the Brotherhood to the next generation. He believed that they would be greater than he was and he would bet it all on that child's future. Indeed, this convinced the First Brother to leave with his wife and child to the Dawn Fortress, such was the talent within that Scion that he would certainly become the next Builder and make the dreams of all in the Brotherhood - and the Child - come true.

But then Disaster happened. The original thirteen died, and so did the child, the original 'Little One'. In his grief the First Builder did not leave his home for eight days, and would have died if not for the other four of the 'five sworn brothers', if they had not appeared in his time of need, to feed him and support him.

On the eighth day, Xi-Wang became a Cultivator. And yet, it was a bitter victory, for if he had ascended only eight days before this he would have had the resources to save his wife and child. That broke him. In his madness, his new grief, he found purpose. He found anger. He found a new self.

"There would be no Xi-Wang in this life if I don't become a Foundation Establishment Cultivator," he said in his grief. "Every resource, every merit, nothing is sacred to me. Everything that I am, and all that remains, I will give to you, my brothers. My Brotherhood."

In that moment, history records, the Brotherhood was truly born.

Broken and crazed by his loss, the First Builder left for the city of Sunnydale, where the Golden Devils managed a force. There, anyone who proved worthy could receive an infusion of the Bronze Blood and become a Cultivator - and, it was known, they were always desperate for recruits.Desperate enough to even use strange magic, the untested and unverified work of the Elder Destasia, on those recruits for the sake of making them stronger. It would be from one of these experiments that a new variant would emerge, the 'Green Devils' for which the members of the Brotherhood that took the blood would become famed for. Weaker Devils, with bodies that were more patina than bronze.

With time, more of the original members returned, and the fury of the First Brother and the fervor of the Brotherhood only grew. With each success that could have saved a family member of someone in the Brotherhood, it only reminded him of his loss, his pain. What would have been impossible in a mortal's lifetime was now easily possible - possible twice over, in fact. In only twenty years.

For a Devil walked the desert as a Sixth Heavenstage. Rising without spirit stones, without beast cores. No, they did this only through hard work and training harder - often while working, so they could be said to be working the hardest.

Somehow, the Brotherhood had devised a method to cultivate with the meager ambient resources of the Desert. Even only to the Sixth Heavenstage, it was a miracle among miracles. All of it, attributed to using 'the Builder Breathing Method', they called it, while working.

It made waves, in his group and beyond. It certainly made them a cult. And it made them popular, and the Brotherhood grew like wildfire.

This made them haughty, and inspired them to face the Fifth Sea Hunters head on in a direct confrontation, even throwing literal shit at a hunter a Greater Realm above them at one point. And yet, despite this obvious madness, there was a clear method to it.

Because not one member of the Brotherhood died that day, in those Trials.

So, with almost a century full of victories and gains for The Clan and the Brotherhood. With so many new talents being born or raised. The Brotherhood grew, and its fervor grew even larger.

Now in the Great Era, which they call 'The End of Days' , the Brotherhood intends to go even further beyond in their fervor. For it is far easier to reach the 4th heavenstage in the desert now, if you are in the right place and are willing to work hard enough to break your legs and keep going.

At the moment, the Brotherhood is currently moving to Waycastle Pleuron, now a living city, where the weakness of their cultivation method will be mitigated. There, they claim, nothing would hold them back.

DESCRIPTION:

Their main base is called the 'Eternal Building', a building that, as its name implies, would be eternally building. The Brotherhood takes great pains to keep the structure in a constant state of work, and it is regularly modified, grown and improved if the Brotherhood lasted that long. Right now, the Eternal Building has been improved with the ability to move - albeit with a great amount of effort - and is currently moving across the desert as the 'Final Little Dawn' towards Waycastle Pleuron, their future Headquarters. They expect the journey to last many years given their speed, but they do not consider legs broken until they are gone, so there is no fear of losing pace.

Compositionally, the Brotherhood is made up primarily of mortals, including not a small number of children, followed by an impressive number of Qi Condensation Legionnaires. Curiously, the Brotherhood is unusually coherent for a 'House', as it were, that does not have even a single Foundation Establishment Cultivator. Indeed, their loyalty and obedience is more akin to an eusocial network, like a beehive, than a House of Cultivators.

Thankfully, the Brotherhood is extremely Clan oriented and family oriented. Loyal to a fault, it makes it their goal to support the Golden Devil Clan as much as possible. While helping the mortals in their own family equally as hard as possible. That this demands the Brotherhood to apply two hundred percent effort at all times is considered an insult, as they claim that every Brother works five times as hard to make up for it.

The leadership of the Brotherhood are called its 'Adult' members, a position earned by conducting rituals called the 'Rite of Passage', and may only be attempted by members of the Brotherhood who have mastered a skill, typically a craft practiced by mortals, although exceptions are known to exist.

Primarily, the Brotherhood focuses on logistical, construction and craft missions, producing a noticeable amount of the Clan's courier force in addition to serving as highly efficient - if oftentimes misguided - construction crews. Given the Brotherhood's habitual workaholism, the merit-based economy of the Clan benefits them greatly, ensuring the Brotherhood a healthy income of Contribution Points and resources - at least, by Qi Condensation standards. These resources are then promptly re-invested into the Brotherhood, primarily the welfare of the children in their ranks.

Finally, the Brotherhood only nominally has a hierarchy and division of labour within itself, but essentially runs as an entirely communal regime, where almost everyone speaks with equal authority and commands equal share of the gains. The only exception is the Builder himself, who commands additional responsibilities and rights. There appears to be another exception called 'the Breaker', but this title is only whispered in hushed tones, and never elaborated upon. Suffice to say, the title of Breaker is currently vacant, with no known holder in history.

Each of the Brothers of the Brotherhood are named in linear order, with the seniormost brother of a given generation called the First Brother, the next-most the Second Brother, and so on. Permutations and nicknames like 'Little One' and 'Little Two' are also not unheard of. Amongst the first generation of the Brotherhood, it is known that the first hundred are unusually devoted and skilled, and certainly the most zealous and unusual members of an already unusual organisation. These hundred are also the Brotherhood's most notable members, and only a few outside of this circle are considered exceptional for whatever reason. One such example would be the 121st Brother, nicknamed the Roadbuilder, presumably because he builds roads.

HOUSE DELPHI, the Wise Fools

Legate Calliope Delphi
Through our blood, ages past live
A spiraling staircase of gray stone ascending

HISTORY:

When the Sea-Conquering Army ruled the Nine Seas, the Blood of Bronze was subject to deliberate alterations to produce variants suitable to conditions on the ground. Many stories and venerable lineages were produced this way, the Delphi being one such.

The Resonant Bronze Compass constitution was developed during the years of occupation when the physical prowess of the standard Bronze-Blooded was no longer needed to take territories but rather enhanced perception, stronger qi reserves and heightened qi receptivity were desired to maintain defeated holdings. The energy of the Heavens and Earth was their province, qi in all its varied forms. The first Delphi were potent qi sorcerers, astute investigators and farseeing overlords. Above all else though, they were recordkeepers, disciples of enhanced cognition. Wisdom was a hard thing to teach in the best of times but access to multiple lifetimes of lived experience and knowledge made for a decent enough safety net.

The Delphi were crippled in the wake of Demonic Soup Chef's great gambit. What use are expansive qi stores and sensitivity when that very energy is wholly antagonistic to your spirit, a barely reined-in foe at the best of times?

DESCRIPTION:

The Delphi Family has never been wanting for cultivators as receptive as they are to qi. The problem has always been making those cultivators worth anything more than jumped up mortals. This heavy representation of cultivators in the Golden Devil Clan legion structure combined with the peculiarities of the bloodline have ensured that the Delphi quickly monopolized one legion. The 95th Legion is the Delphi family and the Delphi family is the 95th legion, a family with a lot of cousins around a dominant main core.

In the present age the Delphi are crafters, reserved and industrious producers of material rather than the fearsome spellslingers of yore. Their main holdings are within the core territories of the Clan: the Shrouded Glade Arboretum in Pill-Forge Forest, Chimaera Echidna Ranch in the Beast-Raising Forest and the Daedalus Atelier in Emporikipolis. They produce the occasional masterpiece of artifice but are most well known for producing affordable products of good if not excellent quality in volume.

The recent expansion of Clan territory has inspired a focus of growth among the family, first with the Apoikia and the Coloneia. They are making alliances with other families to expand into new markets outside Clan territory. The Heavenly Bandit Kingdoms and the Simmering Soup Sect are just a few of the areas being targeted. The current focus of the family is to set in a hub in Seven Temples City to act as a hub into the east of the Organ Meet Desert, penetrating into the Clan's new vassals and eastward lands.

HOUSE XIE

Lady Xie Xinya
"Family Foremost"
Four interlocked circles, bound tight

HISTORY:

Compared to more storied houses, the Xie Family is one that has seen a more recent rise to prominence as the head of their family, Xie Xinya rose to the rank of Legate and was granted command over the 217th Legion or the Everburning Phoenixes. They are said to have a nepotistic streak, choosing to benefit the family over the legion, though the Lady's talent in administration still kept her legion afloat despite their alleged embezzlement.

Since rising to the position of Elder of Intrigue however, the Xie Family has been strictly dedicated to the ideals of the clan. Lady Xinya's dedication to her duty is such that she has stamped out any sign of corruption and ill-behaviour within her house. In fact, she has honed their skills such that every region seems to have a skilled Xie legionnaire having reached a high rank. Like the Phoenix Everburning, Xie Family has risen ever further, proving the superiority of the ideals of the clan to the eyes of all those who would see it.

DESCRIPTION:

The Xie Family is built on the back of successful investments. Even before Xie Xinya became the Elder of Intrigue, the family was famous for their rather extensive Spirit-steel mines and their hand in the trade going through the Scorpion Road. After that however, the house has been at the forefront of the clan's expansion, developing land in the Burnished Crags and expanding with every surge of growth of the clan.

Even in terms of martial excellence, the Xie Family is growing. The 217th Legion is well connected with the family with Xie Jun currently serving as its acting legate. Though they lack any ancient secrets or earth-shaking talents, they have still supplied many skilled legionnaires to the clan, testing every family member for talent when they come of age and then ensuring that they rise to a position to benefit the clan.

HOUSE SARANTAPECHOS, The Brave and the Bold

Lady Kleisthenes Sarantapechos
"From humble origins, seize Heaven."
Three seals arranged around a lightning bolt, black on one half and white on the other

HISTORY:

House Sarantapechos is an ancient and honored house, their names constantly among the legends and leaders of the clan. It is said that the Archgetes who lead the Golden Devils to the Third Sea was one of the Sarantapechos House and his legacy lives on today in the Second Elder Kleisthenes who has stood beside the current Grand Elder for countless centuries.

DESCRIPTION:

House Sarantapechos is a family of many skills and unlike many others, do not focus on certain specialities. Instead it allows their members to focus on their own talents so long as they are in service to the clan. They have a tendency to produce powerful warriors and skilled leaders, with much of the family's earnings coming from the sheer number of skilled legionnaires. That being said, considering the late Lady Euphrosyne's focus on the Dao of the Leaf and Lady Flavia's focus on producing life from the desert, the house seems to be focusing on the production of both common and specialized varieties of spirit herb at the current moment.

NOTABLES:

Lady Kleisthenes Sarantapechos, Hetairarches and Second Elder of the Imperial Optimatoi, follows the Dao of Sacrificial Exchange. Most famous and successful practitioner of the Spiral Yang Art currently alive. Twin sister of the late Euphrosyne Sarantapechos. Early Nascent Soul.

Lady Euphrosyne Sarantapechos, former Stratopedarches of the Imperial Optimatoi, follows the Dao of the Leaf. Twin sister of Lady Kleisthenes Sarantapechos, sacrificed herself to save Grand Elder Manuel Konstantinos from a Fifth Sea Nascent Soul. Great Circle Core Formation. (d. 100 E.K.)

Lady Flavia Sarantapechos, Legate of the 35th Legion i.e The Wonder-Workers. She is in charge of maintaining the infrastructure that provides the quality of life mortals enjoy in the Organ Meat Desert. Her dedication to her task has always been admired, though her focus on her personal assignment often comes at the cost of personal relationships.

Hector Sarantapechos, Centurion following a Dao of Balance. Son of Kleisthenes Sarantapechos and nephew of Euphrosyne Sarantapechos. A promising young seed who reached the rank of centurion and commanded a legion by himself in the chaos of the trials that took his aunt. Alas, he was forced to face a Core Formation enemy and was crippled in the process, passing a few decades after that happened. Mid Foundation. (d. 150 E.K.) [GOOD SEED - DEAD]

Festus Sarantapechos, an inventive blacksmith who had reached the Tenth Heavenstage. A promising young seed who, unlike his more successful peers, never lived long enough to explore his potential. Seeking to understand the fate of Euphrosyne, he found the site of her death and was slain by errant bolts of tribulation lightning. (d. 170 E.K) [GOOD SEED - DEAD]

HOUSE THEOPHYLAKTOS, Moonlit Bards

Legate Bianor Theophylaktos
"Seize the shape of victory."
A quill drawing a spearhead

HISTORY:

In ages past, when the Clan had the liberty to do more than gasp for life and struggle against Heaven, House Theophylaktos served as actors and playwrights, dedicating their shapeshifting abilities towards recording and recreating the events of the past to share with the rest of the clan. Their Liquid Bronze bloodline variation allowed the Theophylaktos family to physically change body shape in order to mimic other beings, allowing them to cultivate a long legacy of artistry, performing in plays and dances. However, they sacrifice the resilience and some of the strength expected of the Bronze, which the House considers to be a worthwhile price to pay for excellence.

DESCRIPTION:

In the current state of the clan, the Theophylaktos and the Clan each no longer have this privilege, but the House's past expertise has lent them no small amount of skill in more subtle practices, providing the Clan a reserve of manpower skilled in espionage, subterfuge, sabotage, reconnaissance and assassination, an asset of no small value.

NOTABLES:

Nikephoros Theophylaktos, former Parakoimomenos of the Imperial Optimatoi, and before that the apprentice and assistant to Grand Elder Manuel Konstantinos. Died to a Fifth Sea Nascent Soul, in defiance of the rules of the Rite of Karmic Purification. (d. 100 E.K.)

Ioannes Theophylaktos, Centurion of the Imperial Optimatoi and nephew to Nikephoros Theophylaktos. Was part of a terrible mission to the Oasis where in misaimed vengeance towards his uncle, Child Corpse Gulper ambushed the team the youth was a part of and tortured him for three days before sending a jade slip recording to the Archgetes. The Archgetes' ultimate victory over Child Corpse Gulper can to some part be attributed to the insight granted by Ioannes' sacrifice. (d. 11 E.K )

Syntyche Theophylaktos, Centurion of the Imperial Optimatoi. She was a skilled spy and a powerful asset for the clan. No information of her current location seems to be publicly available, though given her abilities whether this means she is on a deep cover mission, died in some battle, left the clan entirely or her information is simply lost is unknown. HOUSE KONSTANTINOS

Grand Elder Manuel Konstantinos (in theory); Centurion Alexia Konstantinos
"Clan Above All."
A black knife against a red backdrop

HISTORY:

House Konstantinos is, in truth, barely a House. Though few of the families of the Optimatoi are young in any sense of the word, House Konstantinos does not have the storied histories of many older families, nor does it have the meteoric ascension of other more vigorous families like the Xie. Founded by the children of Legionnaires and turtleborn natives, the Blood of Bronze runs thinly in House Konstantinos, and thus far no notable variant constitution has been detected in its scions. House Konstantinos is a lesser house, with no great resources and few great legacies. It has but two claims to fame:

First, it has a noted, if small, talent for subterfuge and espionage, with the members of the house being notably meticulous and careful with their resources, knowing that their talent is little even by the standards of the Clan.

Second, it is the House of the Regent-Lord, Archgetes Manuel Konstantinos, the Clan's most powerful and, prior to the ascension of Lady Kleisthenes with his aid, its only Nascent Soul.

The records of this House are too short to determine if their intrigue focus is due to their emulation of their greatest and most distant member and elder, or if it came about in the past and was what ultimately shaped the nature of the Archgetes today.

DESCRIPTION:

In the present day, House Konstantinos is not of any particular note, and it produces competent - if unexceptional - Legionnaires. Service to the Clan is taught to be paramount, and its members often find themselves in the service of the Department of Intrigue, but otherwise the House and the Archgetes who bears its name have little interaction, uniquely so in the Clan's history. To date, there have been no Chosen of the Clan who have hailed from House Konstantinos, though this does not preclude the possibility of one rising in the future.

NOTABLES:

Grand Elder Manuel Konstantinos, the reigning Archgetes of the Imperial Optimatoi, and the prior Parakoimomenos under Grand Elder Alexios Nikeodemos. Under his rule, the Clan has experienced the greatest resurgence in power in thousands of years, and it is by his hand that three Nascent Souls have been slain. Follows the Dao of Heaven's Shadow. Mid Nascent Soul.

Alexia Konstantinos, a distant relative of the Archgetes who worked in intrigue. After the defeat of the Jingshen Clan, she released a tell-all book regarding the intrigues performed against the Clan where among other things, she assisted the Archigetes in conducting sabotage on a Cultivation Cauldron intended for Lady Jingshen Jiao. Currently in service as one of the Clan's many spies. Foundation Establishment 1-Pillar (True).

HOUSE NIKEODEMOS, Harbingers of Victory

Legate Sertorius Nikeodemos
MOTTO: "We Lead the Way"
A winged sword cast over an antediluvian army

HISTORY:

The Earl of Bronze, as is the wont of great men, sprung many a talented scion from his fecund loins, and from those good seeds numerous dynasties drew their descend. They occupied a special place in the Legion - then the Clan - due to both the strength of their blood and the prestige of their lineage. These noble houses were numerous and similar in nature, which naturally led to feuds between the different lines about which bore the greatest claim to descent from their progenitor (and thus the greatest claim to who could stand as his heir). Their pride, power, and interminable bickering led to them oft being characterized as the stereotype of Clan nobility by those not of the blood, and perhaps also not unrelatedly these families led the reactionary protest against sharing the Blood of Bronze with the barbaroi when times grew rough and options dwindled, arguing most ardently in favor of preserving the legacy and heritage of the Sea Conquering Army.

Today, these families are gone. Wiped away through the unforgiving trials, the drive from the Plains and then from the Mountains, and through the power simply drying up with time and miscegenation, leading to their noble status being stripped by the ruthlessly meritocratic Clan leadership. The Earl of Bronze, along with so much else of the Clan's history, has been relegated to a near mythical nature, and his descendants rarely draw much note from their distant paternity, if they're even aware of it at all. For all the Bronze Progeny fought a rear-guard action against the ineffable winds of change, in the end it was for naught, and they were relegated to the half-forgotten relics they battled so hard to preserve.

All, that is, save for one.

DESCRIPTION:

House Nikeodemos was not a particularly unusual specimen out of the Hundred Houses. It was not the strongest of them, nor the weakest. What it turned out to be, however, was the luckiest.

As the wheel of fate turns at long last, and Fortuna once again waxes for the Golden Devil Clan, the last great remnant of the Earl's direct line remains standing. A combination of raw tenacity, judicious application of the better qualities of valor, some unscrupulous politicking, and a healthy heaping of luck have seen House Nikeodemos through the nadir of the Sea Conquering Army's position, not only surviving but thriving.

The Clan has plenty of ancient and powerful bloodlines managing to persist to the current era. The Clan also has plenty of wealthy and fecund houses with vast estates and vast branches. What makes House Nikeodemos unique to the Golden Devils, then, isn't that they're either of these things - it's that they're both. It's not surprising, thus, that they could boast the extremely rare privilege of birthing a Nascent Soul in the past millennium, nor that a notably disproportionate amount of Core Elders bear their name.

Although a recent spell or tragedy has seen both of these things wiped away, the House is well on the rebound due to harnessing one of their more morbid assets: a grand mausoleum of nearly unfathomable depth and breadth, in which the entombed corpses of Nikeodemos members stemming back to the zenith of the Sea Conquering Army rest. Such is the sheer concentration of deceased Spirit Severing legionnaires (and more) that venturing too deep can lead to the unprepared being outright killed from the sheer residual spiritual pressure, and even forewarned scions struggle to endure the deepest and most ancient catacombs that an interminable distance beneath the manor.

It's telling of the House's vast history, then, that reportedly their desert mausoleum pales in comparison to the ancient mortuary temple that was embedded in the mountains near their prior home, hidden and protected from even the most persistent and greedy Sorrowful Blacksmith tomb-robbers, often theorised to be one of the reasons House Nikeodemos tends to be the strongest advocate for the reconquest of the Clan's Mountain territories at the Sorrowful Blacksmith Sect's moment of weakness.

In bearing, perhaps surprisingly considering their almost gratuitous wealth and lack of hesitance showing it off, the House prizes the stoic, laconic bearing of their imaging SCA aristocratic predecessors. For example, the current patriarch, Sertorius Nikeodemos, commonly greets visitors with the dizzying combination of drinking boiled water in a wineglass worth more than the average cultivator will ever accumulate in their life. They're otherwise notable for the extreme emphasis they place on the Clan's and their own history - they will never speak of themselves as "Golden Devils," but are always Imperio Optomoi, now and forever.

NOTABLES:

Alexios Nikeodemos, former Archgetes of the Optimatoi and master of Manuel Konstantinos, the serving Archgetes. Died to a Fifth Sea Hunter's Treasure, when he sought to save his Foundation Establishment Grandson. Mid Nascent Soul, and considered powerful for one. (d. 0 E.K.)

Sertorius Nikeodemos, Core Formation Elder, Legate of the 217th Legion. Notable for the drastic measures he took to stabilize the House's situation after the disastrous second-to-last Trails, his laconic sense of humor, and impressive speed of cultivation.

Constantine Nikeodemos, 12th realm Qi Condescension Disciple, Aide to the Ninth Prince. The apple of his House's eye, his rate of cultivation has put even his grandfather's to shame, and seems like a shoe-in for one of the Clan's newest SP Kings. [GOOD SEED]

HOUSE ANGELUS, Heralds of Blood and Danger

Zeno Angelus (acting)
MOTTO: "Our love shall oppose this raging world!"

HISTORY: It is well established as a canonized myth that this family began its first days somewhere in the beginning millenia of the SCA as scouts appointed directly for this army by the Earl of bronze, but the exact reason why and most other details are forgotten to time. The first ancestor the Clan Accountings can truly point to as historical is Alvanha Angelos, Great-Grandmother of Monima Angelus(born Angelos and damnatio by proxy), who fathered-in-spirit the blood traitor Ares Angelus. Though the Angelus family itself can point to some secondary evidence with some writings attributed to family members of far more ancient times, their status as traditional leaders of the 616th damnatio legio has seen their presence dwindle to a small handful of Foundation experts of note with no core experts remaining. This fecund family tends to see its fanatically loyal core experts burn out quickly against the hordes of Bloodpath standing in the Clans way, hoping desperately to regain the honor their hated ancestor threw away carelessly.

With the recent 3000th day of mourning for lost brothers and sisters to the Path of the enemy passing without murmurs of dissent and the notably subtle leadership under Archegetes Manuel "Old Gold" Konstantinos, the recent generation of higher command seem to have taken a different approach to handling the newest scions of this damned family.

Among the notable members of their house, Zeno and Abel Angelus have distinguished themselves in the plains with insights into the Single Pillar Path and attack siege logistics respectively. Whether this house can flourish in this new Great Era and reclaim their glorious birthright among the 616th or finally fall to damnatio memoriae only time will tell.

DESCRIPTION: A family known for its divinations and array masters. Any legionnaire who has buried their fellow comrade has used their teachings and burial shrouds to quell the restless spirits, disturbed by heaven's karmic wrath or find their way among a hostile world. Despite the small size of their holdings, this house makes good stones selling spirit shrouds and the families continued leasing of its lesser teachings to the Clan at large since ancient times. To find out why the Clan at large is leasing this knowledge to subsidize this one's family income is a quest many bureaucrats have undertaken, but none have succeeded to disentangle the reason why. Murmurs persist of the reason lying deep in the tower of spite under scrolls of unassuming harvest accountings. So far, no unprescribed expedition by glory seeking administrators have come back with results. With this family's reputation lingering among us, fewer still feel the need to hold out their neck for them and add to the glory of Angelus.

NOTABLES:

Zeno Angelus, acting Parenfamilias in lieu of his missing father and older brother of the twins Abel and Georgy Jr.. Foundation Establishment 6-Pillar. [GOOD SEED]

Abel Angelus, renowned Inventor and famously incorruptible Bureaucrat. 11th Heavenstage. [GOOD SEED]

==============================

You hold this artifact in your palm as you sit on a rock on the fringes of Blue Steel Town, gazing at the blindfolded man. He paces gently across the desert in the early evening light, explaining the intricacies of a technique, but the remnants of a debilitating intoxicant and a paucity of interest mean most of it flies over your head.

"Now, then," Remus says, spreading his arms wide. "How about a demonstration?"

"Please," you say. "I'm so bored. So very, very bored."

His arms spread a little wider and your not-smell sense of qi detects the sweet-yet-acrid scent of Bronze qi. You wait for something to happen, and Remus lowers his hands. "What do you think?" he asks.

"Wait, did you already do it?" you say, voicing confusion. "Nothing happened."

Remus smiles, and taps his forehead. "Incorrect, Janus," he says. "You continue to rely too much on your sense of the external. The relative newness of your senses is no excuse not to rely on them. Come. Feel."

For a moment, you aren't sure what he means, then Remus ceases to hold back his cultivation. You are momentarily left stunned as the full weight of a Foundation Establishment cultivator appears in your senses, the tension-tactile feeling of qi in the air as it all seems to be pulled taut towards him.

You feel the qi reaching for you, a hand in the dark, and you reach out to it with your own qi. The Hoplite Formation forms around the two of you and you stand to match his stance without thinking about it. You look at your hand as Remus holds his own before his blindfold.

"This is," you say, "Different."

"Yes," Remus says. "From the outside, there is little to be noticed for it is not an external technique. In truth, it is closer to self-hypnosis than something like Reflected Purities."

"What does that mean?" you ask, looking up at him.

"Reflected Purities does not preclude other techniques because of its...complexity," he says, voice falling into a gentle lecturing tone. "Indeed, it is rather simple. Its limitation is one of the Blood." He holds his hand up, cupping it into a loose fist. "Imagine a cultivator as a well. The water that can be drawn from it at once is limited by the buckets attached to it, or the Blood of Bronze in this case." He sticks one finger into his cupped hand. "Reflected Purities uses it all. There is no more room for water to be drawn."

You cover your mouth with one hand, and raise an eyebrow.

"However, this is a false problem. It is not limited by the size of the well, but by our own failures. Were you to move the bucket to the side of the well," he shifted his finger over to slide a second in up the knuckle. "You would find that a second could fit without issue. In a cultivator, this is akin to reducing unnecessary qi usage in the body. Lesser tasks, born from impurities or particular physiques, are starved of qi that the Blood may drink deeply from the well. Without those as distractions, you become more capable of executing complex and layered manipulations of Bronze qi, utilizing multiple techniques in sequence to great effect."

You fail to hold back a laugh, and Remus lets his hand fall. "Alright, I get it," you say. "But did you have to start fingering your own hand for that explanation?"

Remus shrugs and releases the technique then the formation, a slow smile spreading across his face. "The Ecstasy of Bronze causes a slightly altered mentality, below Core Formation. Your emotions are...muted, to allow you to make more rapid decisions without qi fluctuations. Generally, you fixate on whatever your goal was when you activated it."

"And what the hell were you thinking about that led you to that?"

Remus grins at you. "Explaining it in a way you'd remember."

You open your mouth to respond, then just grin ruefully. "Alright, you got me there."

You focus on your breathing.

The stone beneath your toes begins to crack, but bronze qi pulses out a moment later, a tight circle the size of a dinner plate suddenly affirming the ground beneath your feet. You push off and the qi responds with a springy pulse that propels you forward, your stride morphing into a bounding run. Your eyes begin to dry from the air whipping past them, so you begin to blink now. Soon, there will be no time.

Your first step completes and your second leg touches the ground, qi pulsing out again to aid your sprint and hurl your forward. The world darkens between closing lids as you watch the red arm begin to whip around, punching towards Aelia's stomach. You will be too slow to reach in time.

You look inside yourself, feeling the potential in your own body. The empty gaps where weak flesh lay but mighty bronze could fill. Your meridians are broad and healthy, stretched broad in preparation for a technique yet beyond your ken, and a deep well of qi pulses within your lower dantian. You drink deeply from the well, sending the qi beneath your skin and into your muscles.

"-me!"

Your third step does not occur. You no longer need it.

You kick off the ground and cross the space in a single stroke, like a desert storm. You landed between the two and let the ground simply shatter from the force. Light returns to the world as you finish blinking, and instead focus qi into your arms. The right lances out, catching his bloody limb before it could complete its strike.

"Janus?! How did-" Aelia begins to ask.

"What Devilry-?!" The Blood Path cultivator is confused, a moment of hesitation for your strike.

Your left hand curls into a fist, and you can hear the creak as newly bronzed muscles flex. Your punch thunders out, hitting the Blood Path cultivator in the stomach. He curls like a shrimp, but he still lives. You strike again, then a third time.

"-you get-"

"-ugh!"

It is too shallow. His skin is too thick from Blood Path techniques. Your arm strains as the flesh threatens to collapse. There are no mortal impurities left in my body, but your qi is unpolished bronze. You reached beyond your grasp, knowingly, for this brief moment of power. It would be wise of you to let go, release yourself from the Ecstasy and step away.

But you have to save Aelia.

You focus on your breathing.

You reached for the well of qi and drank deeply, calling it all to command and molding it in a way you have never practiced before, not in this fashion. Before you had employed Silent Steps to firm the ground beneath my feet, you now instead use it to grasp the air around your fist. Your fourth strike was on the way, even as you attempt to complete the technique, your qi racing to keep up before all of your techniques abandoned you at once.

The air around my knuckles you hold fast, a weapon to firm my blow. The air before your fist, you make gentle like a night breeze, parting like a whisper. The air to the sides ran along with it, like paired horses, pushing the load of my blow ever faster.

Your punch blows through the glowing light in the Blood Path cultivator's stomach with an explosion of red steam, the lunatic's body posing as much of an obstacle as silken tofu.

He hangs limply against you, the life already gone, held in place more by Aelia and your fists than any structure left to his destroyed torso.

"-here? Whoa!"

"Nngh, fuck," you groan, as your qi suddenly runs rampant through your body, ravaging it and loosing all your techniques at once.

The Sanctius House.

We've all heard of it before. It's right there, only a short distance outside the Dawn Fortress taunting all those who can see it. Who wouldn't want to walk inside and grasp all the knowledge that lay waiting within? It was the 1178th Legion, all slain in the disastrous trials one hundred years ago. A legion with incredible spiritual dao, enough that even after their deaths occurring thousands of li away, their ghosts still rose to haunt their old home.

Exorcists dream of testing their will against the powerful spirits that dwelled inside. Spirit-binders hoped to contract those same powerful souls. But no matter what they said, they all coveted the gathered knowledge and powerful tools that were hidden within. Any Aspirant who had anything to do with ghosts and spirits knew about this place and they had most likely visited it at some point, hoping to unlock its secrets.

The Optio had put a stop to it of course, after the first death. That didn't stop people. In fact, official attention seemed to have only confirmed the more skeptical that it was truly haunted. There were many success stories in the beginning as Aspirants met ghosts of fallen centurions who still kept their minds and were eager to pass on their knowledge. But unbound ghosts deteriorate with time and after that, it was not so easy.

The lucky ones had just been intimidated by its terrifying aura and simply turned back. Others who were less lucky met with the stray spirits that could sometimes wander out of the house, escaping with their lives when the mad spirits turned on them. Those with the worst luck died here, their souls bound to the house and never again able to leave. The stories made it seem like some secret realm, only increasing the mystique.

It was a century after the House reached its current state, on the eve of another, more miraculous trial that something was done about it. Centurion Yingzi - a talented seed barely older than the rumors of this house was the one to do it…

"So at last, we return."

Under the afternoon sun, the speaker was barely visible - a shade lighter than the bright of the heavens. Yet from what could be seen of the old ghost's silhouette, he had a proud bearing and wore an armor befitting a centurion who had died in battle. He stood upon a hill, looking down upon the Sanctius House in the distance.

"How does it feel, senior?" The woman next to him asked, hand to her head to shield her eyes from the pyrite light. She was dressed in an armor that evoked the ghost's, but distinct enough to show that she had adapted it for her own needs. Her aura rested at the ninth heavenstage and she carried it with the ease of someone who had borne that power for decades.

"It's heartening to see the dread energies cleared, but it is far too quiet compared to my time when it was a full legion base." He answered, smiling nostalgically. "Ah, this brings back so many memories."

The woman shook with emotion, before bowing her head. "Senior brother…" She said, voice heavy with regret. "Forgive me, for I have failed you."

He turned to her, eyes narrowing in concern. "Christa…" He spoke, at a loss for words for a moment before continuing with passion. "You have done no such thing."

She looked up to meet his translucent eyes. "But you've helped me so much." She replied, shaking her head. "You not only deigned to be my first bound spirit, but you taught me everything I know whether about being a legionary or a spirit binder. All you asked me in return was to some day cleanse the House but someone else managed to do it before me."

"You have done no such thing, Christa." The ghostly centurion repeated. "Yes, I hoped that you would be the one to inherit its treasures but that was my own selfishness. It couldn't be helped in the end. You needed to be a centurion to face the degraded ghost of my legate, it is a shame another got to it before you. You are ready to break through in only a century - that is nothing to scoff at."

Christa turned away from him, her eyes falling upon the House below with several cultivators of her own power and two centurions waiting within. "Centurion Yingzi is my own age, senior brother - and she broke through at only sixty years. I… could have done better."

The ghost blinked at that. "Truly?"

"Truly." The girl replied, her voice bitter with envy. "Perhaps I could have…"

"It doesn't matter." Her senior replied firmly. "Each walks their own path to immortality, it is pointless to compare where we are now."

"But…" Christa asked, hesitantly. "Do you believe that I could someday reach the same heights?"

"Undoubtedly." He replied immediately, before turning to look at the Sanctius House wistfully. "I remember the young aspirant, so inspired by the tales of the thirteen that she sought to conquer the house barely into the first heavenstage. Whether through your own triumph or as part of this woman's century - you will inherit the secrets of my legion."

"I would have preferred it to be of my own triumph." She whispered, taking a breath but then she smiled at him. "I suppose there is no shame in sharing in another's. As they say, a stone kept benefits none but a stone sold benefits more than one."

The centurion smirked at her. "Besides, I suspect that this Yingzi wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of the knowledge in there without everything I have taught you. That is almost certainly why she has offered you a ticket to Yuan to be a part of her century."

"As you say, senior." Christa replied, smiling back at him.

| | | | | | | | | | |

As she walked towards Sanctius House, she noticed that she wasn't alone in approaching the mansion. Several other cultivators had shown up as well, some leaving and others observing the many enchantments around it in homes of enlightenment. All of their levels of qi were towards the top of Qi Condensation and it was obvious that they were rising stars of the clan.

How many individuals had she actually called to her? Christa wondered as she approached the entrance. Glancing at the nostalgic expression on her senior's face, she decided not to question him. Instead she summoned Augusta, an owl spirit she had raised from a sliver of nascent will from an owl hunted by the Archigetes himself. The proud spirit alighted over her shoulders and glanced around before nipping her ear arrogantly.

Her mind surged as her knowledge and recollection was rearranged by its ability. Most facts and images faded from her mind as others that were perhaps more relevant, made themselves known. It was the same reason she was here, though they lacked the same connection she had with the building. They had been given other incentives and in many cases, the sheer audacity of the call made anyone who sought the greater realms incredibly curious.

Even Christa could feel her heart beat faster as what Centurion Yingzi was proclaiming dawned upon her. These were all potential centurions themselves and if she dared to draw all of them underneath her, then it was obvious what she was trying to become. An existence that surpassed a centurion - a Legate! How could they who rushed towards the heights of cultivation ignore such a calling?

Augusta's ability could be wrong, she knew. It was only a temporary enhancement of her intuition and cognition, and very often it gave her the wrong conclusion. That was rare for things like this when the answer was self-evident and the only thing that had prevented her from realizing it was her own preoccupation with the other benefits that the Centurion had proved her. Of course that only brought another question to mind, was the benefits she had been offered something that was intentionally meant to blind her!?

She was certain many only came to see what was going on and had no real interest at all in joining the girl's century but they came anyway, and why wouldn't they? The Centurion had offered a hundred places to Yuan for her century. This was bait that spoke to her reach and resources. How many other legionaries could manage to fund such a thing? It almost made her want to stand beside her and see how far they could go.

As she walked the familiar road to the entrance, she frowned at the more recent marks of battle in the surroundings and noticed that the gate had been replaced. As she walked closer to the entrance, her flame spirit Elianus materialized on her other shoulder and began to shiver. He was the least of her spirits, collected from the Hong Xuan mountains rather than the impressive pedigrees the others possessed and was most easily spooked.

There was a dreadful aura near the house and it almost made her step back as well, though she caught herself quickly. It certainly made several of her peers visibly hesitate and she suddenly realized that those outside weren't simply studying the House but psyching themselves up to enter. It certainly lifted her own spirits regarding her capabilities as she walked past them without hesitating and while idly taking Elianus into her hands and calming it down.

There was a strange energy in the air, likely remnants from the battle the centurion had fought and the long haunting. She had asked around before arriving and had even read the report. It had included mentions of the battle leaking outside of the house and the locals - people entirely different from back during her aspirant days - had mentioned torturous screams and dao-shaking emanations.

It wasn't something difficult to remove, so she could only assume the centurion had let it remain as a sort of tribulation for those seeking to join her. Christa doubted it would seriously impact anyone Senior Yingzi actually wanted to recruit. She sighed as the spirit refused to calm, only panicking more. The owl bore the aura imperiously, beak high in the air as she watched the fire spirit disdainfully while her senior barely noticed it.

She calmed her own excitement and extended that mental aura towards the flame spirit, feeding it her emotions. Slowly, it began to settle down. This was another trick designed by the late owners of the house, but it took self-control and burned up some qi. She couldn't keep it up for long but it was enough for her to draw out his talisman and seal him back inside. It was a shame that it had panicked, but that is how things often are.

Christa had been hoping to rely on the fire spirit's unique spiritual perception during her interview with the Centurion. She had come to rely upon its ability to read the heat in people's bodies and she was more interested in what it picked up from her new centurion than Augusta's wisdom. Leaving only the owl to hover over her shoulder, she took a deep breath and nodded to her senior before walking into the building.

| | | | | | | | | | |

"Who is it?" The centurion's voice came, sounding surprisingly normal. Christa had expected her to be different from everything she had surmised about her, but upon arriving at the room she had been waiting in, she didn't look how she had expected. Centurion Xiao Yingzi had a pale complexion with a face that reminded her of the sort of strict teacher you never liked at first but always came to appreciate in the future.
She was dressed in a casual chiton as she went through her paperwork and if there was any thought that she wasn't dangerous, there was a bronze banner next to her that seemed to emanate with power. Even her senior froze when he gazed upon it which likely implied that it was a powerful artifact even outside the hands of a centurion. Suddenly feeling a strange sort of pressure, Christa spoke up nervously. "It's me, my lady. May I come in?"

"Oh Christa, yes. I didn't expect you so early." Centurion Yingzi said, looking up with a smile and suddenly the pressure vanished. As she glanced at the spirit of her senior by Christa's side, she gave a light tilt of her head which her senior acknowledged with a nod. Only in that pause did the legionary realize that she hadn't given her name. "Please come in, the door is open."

Christa pushed open the door to find a room filled with spiritual energy. It wasn't dissimilar to what she had felt outside but much cleaner. It would be calming for spirits rather than cause them to become restless. After a hesitant look at the centurion's encouraging smile, she decided to take the chance. "Centurion Yingzi, would you mind if I release my flame spirit? He'd been spooked outside and this atmosphere would do him some good."

At the centurion's nod, she formed a sign with her hand and Elianus was released from his talisman. He began to flit over her head excitedly as he sensed the aura around him before she extended it a stern sliver of attention, after which he settled on her shoulder. "May I?" Centurion Yingzi asked and Christa nodded, knowing that releasing him meant satisfying her curiosity.

She felt the centurion's spiritual sense extend towards her fire spirit and then flicked across her as well as the rest of her bonded spirits. After a moment's attention, her focus receded and the centurion nodded. "Come, sit." The centurion said, gesturing to a seat next to her while not looking up from her work. "Tell me, what did you think of my offer?"

As she moved, she walked past a number of lamps that seemed to be the source of the atmosphere that made Elianus very happy and she definitely kept an eye on him to make sure he didn't embarrass her. Walking quickly, she sat on the seat that she was offered and the older woman finally looked up at her.

Though actively studying her without permission may have been rude,by now she had gotten a sense of the centurion's aura. It was perhaps the strangest thing about her - it was far too strong to be from a legionnaire but it was far too weak to be from a foundation building expert. Given she could barely glean any other information from it, she felt certain that it was a polite way of letting her know it was being suppressed.

Was that a thing centurions all did or a particular quirk of this particular one?

"I am very much interested." She replied, eyes glittering. "I have been hoping to study the deeper secrets of Sanctius House since I was an Aspirant. I would be happy to be a part of your century and work with you on deciphering them."

"However-" Her senior cut in. "We are also curious about your future plans. You seem to be recruiting many strong potentials, especially by dangling the opportunity for a secret realm in front of them. Once you have your One Hundred, what do you plan to do with them?"

"What do you think I was planning?" The centurion asked, raising an eyebrow. Christa froze for a second, wondering if she was being reprimanded for her senior's words. Her senior was resolute however, and Lady Yingzi gave her a slight smile that encouraged her.

"I think… you are setting the foundations of a legion!" She replied, looking at her hoping she was correct. "That's why you are choosing legionaries who are on the verge of breakthrough and gathering them under you."

"Do you truly think that you are close to reaching Core Formation?" The centurion's ghost asked, examining her critically. Centurion Yingzi raised her eyebrows and causally relaxed her grip on her aura, causing the spirit's eyes to widen. "Fourth Pillar!?"

Even Christa was shocked. Normally centurions were at least in their three hundreds before they hit the fourth pillar - Centurion Yingzi was of her own generation! Even Augusta nipping into her ear wasn't enough to change the reality in front of her. "As you can see, I am only preparing for the future. The question is… would you like to be a part of that future?"

With a look of solemn seriousness, the spirit of her senior spoke a few words that once more shocked her. "How much are you offering?" He said, as if haggling for a prize fish in the marketplace.

Centurion Yingzi's eyes returned his anticipation. "No extra resources beyond what she earns." She established firmly from the beginning. "However, I am willing to discuss privileges and special opportunities such as the ticket to Yuan I have already offered. As I am hoping to groom an elite core, I would also be open to suggestions regarding broad strategy."

"Suggestions from me, or the girl?" The senior fired back. "I'm telling you now that If you want my help, you'll need to give us extra! And how much latitude are you planning on giving us when - if - your legion actually materializes?"

"Full latitude." Xiao Yingzi replied with a smile and that caused Christa's mind to spin. Full latitude? I can organize my century however I want? "I have little concrete for my century now besides an elite core - this gives my first few centurions the freedom to adopt things to their choosing."

"Any experienced centurions planning to join?"

"Several from the 43rd Legion and some from the 96th. I hope you won't ask me to reveal their names to you, however."

"Of course not!"

Christa watched as the two argued over her joining and after she was confident that they were only haggling over the particulars, she focused between them. Overall, she had been somewhat overwhelmed by what the centurion was offering - and she was certainly a centurion, no matter how old she was. Extending her will into Elianus, she looked through his senses and noticed that Centurion Yingzi's inner fire hadn't flickered even once during the conversation.

So this was a centurion.

She leaned forward as she listened to them barter, committing every word to memory. Soon, she swore to herself, she would be joining their ranks! Though she didn't realize it at that moment, it was with this thought that a anticipatory sense of doom settled into her heart - that sensation familiar to all cultivators in their great circle, the looming threat of tribulation!

Meditations
It had been the most free time he had enjoyed all century long.

The Clan hummed along, the Council keeping things well in hand. He handed over responsibilities to Kleisthenes from time to time, just as Alexios had done for him. If he were to fall, she would need experience in all things, not merely those within her current remit.

There was a question he had been turning over in his mind for the last few days. For years he had simply avoided it, hid from his own questioning mind in a bid to avoid weakening his resolve. But he needed these months of closed cultivation, and the reality was picking at the link between your body and soul with unanswered questions in your mind was a good way to tear at the link instead.

What was the purpose of the Sea-Conquering Army?

He didn't know.

He had thought he had known, centuries ago. When Alexios had risen as the Clan's newest Nascent Soul it had been obvious. They were the heirs to a glorious tradition, one which stood proudly above all others in justice and mercy alike. Mortals thrived under their rule, and they challenged the Heavens themselves to bring about a peace that no others would strive for. The Righteous Path cared little for their mortals, and yet the Clan had for as long as living memory lasted - indeed, the records they had brought when they had lost their Plains territory and fled into the Mountains indicated it had always been so.

He wondered about that. With the power of a Spirit Severing Elder, anything could be faked - at least to his poor vision. Had the Clan ever been what he had believed it to be, or had it simply been his misguided beliefs, and the misguided beliefs of some who came before him that made it so?

For it was when he had seen Jovi the first doubts had emerged. The man has casually spoken of killing endless mortals, slaughtering innocents without pause to reach victory. Yet he thought he had understood then. The monstrosity was out of desperation, that even the Sea-Conquering Army would become less than great when driven to desperation. Not a proud matter, but one that did not speak of their true character in victory - merely that at their worst they were no better than other men.

That too, he understood. The dream of the Clan required victory, required high-mindedness but human beings were not all perfect. Jovi had been a monster, but had not Manuel committed evils? No, he had understood, if he had not agreed. Perhaps it would have been better to die than to inflict such slaughter, but it had not been him making the choice.

It was the second vision that had brought him fear. The Beastwar. He was no fool, and knew that there would be a third vision at some point. It seemed obvious. The point at which they lost their last true hope of victory, Jovi Callista. The inflection point, the truth of what the Will Opposing was, under Heraclius Sarantapechos. The third vision would show the purpose, he knew. The truth of the matter, what the Will Opposing had been brought here for.

At first he had thought them mere random visions of the past, yet careful investigation of the Clan had shown no others with the dreams, if they could rightfully be called that. The experiences.

He was being... primed for something. What it was, he couldn't tell. But despite his lack of talent, despite his relative incompetence compared to those had come before him - and it seemed, those who would come after - he was the one being shaped for something.

Even a fool could see that Heaven's Shadow was preparing him, making him into a tool. Even a fool's fool could tell that a tool was only made if it needed to be used. How? That was, as it happened, not the terrifying part. The worst part was this - if he learned the truth, would he even want to be such a tool? And after he learned the truth, would he have a choice in the matter?

He could not set his mind to rights, but resolved what he had resolved all those years ago. As long as his will remained his own he would act in accordance with his own will. The Will of Heaven's Shadow in truth might not be the one he had imagined, a righteous shadow struggling against an oppressive evil, but he would rather serve the Shadow of his Dao even if it led him into death, than bow down to a real one that embodied the worst excesses of the Sea-Conquering Army.

Hm. I mean, it's kind of funny -- if the Shadow, the Will Opposing, is priming him for something... if it is molding him into a tool of some sort... then why show him things which test that resolve and introduce doubts?

... Perhaps to test his resolve, I suppose. Also possibly because a truth told honestly, no matter how bitter or double-edged or full of grey areas or tragedies or compromises, is better than a lie. Especially if somebody else could reveal the truth, or tell a better lie, or something.

Maybe the Shadow wants understanding and comprehension, and not just blind loyalty and obedience. Or maybe it just can't outright lie (I doubt that, but) -- maybe it has to reveal the story by showing the past, and not just telling lies, because as a record and a Lingering Will it's running off of programming and not fully smart.

Maybe it's the Shadow itself that doesn't want to blindly follow a set of desperate last orders like Heaven does, so it's providing Manuel with context to get feedback on how to go about fulfilling its purpose.

Basically, if it doesn't have his support, then it has already lost. As for Lies... what would it lie with? It's showing him visions of the past - visions of real things that it experienced. That's all it's got. So it's sending him what it has to offer, in the hopes that it will work. It might be a gamble, but everything else is worse.

I wonder if in some small way Heavens Shadow represents the will of us Questers, and the Key represents Manuel's ability to glimpse past the 4th wall.

After all, we are trying to mould him into a better tool to serve our whims, with our votes, write ins and vast quantites of Omake.

It would also explain the Shadows moral ambiguity, since its actions are decided by committee and are as a result often inconsistent!
