Alright...since no one is really doing it in this thread...time to post some possible Trismegistus builds because that will be a contentious vote and we need to get it right. We've argued a fair bit in Discord and now we might as well bring it here. The longer we have time to work out the kinks the better.
Trismegistus Builds
"But anyway, Harry was pretty excited, because soon enough, he'd be the greatest wizard to have ever lived."
A Great Wizard
- Transfiguration
- Charms
- Potions
This is the classical "great" wizard build I would imagine. Charms, Transfiguration, and Potions are the three biggest subjects taught at Hogwarts and cover a massive amount of magic. Trismegistus picks for these three will result in Harry possessing monstrous talent in a huge portion of magical fields that are taught at Hogwarts. Naturally there are some big pros and cons to this build as with all other builds.
It can not be underestimated just how versatile of a wizard Harry would be with this build. It times it would appear as if Harry has the answer to any problem that comes his way. A bit of an exaggeration but perhaps not too far off the truth. Charms, Transfiguration and Potions offer solutions to a massive amount of problems that Harry can face. With potions lets take the potion
The Dark Lord used to protect one of
His Horcruxes as an example. Dumbledore himself had no magical means of getting around this potion. Dumbledore...one of the greatest wizards of all time was stumped there. Potions are a branch of magic that is hard to undo unless one is a skilled potioneer. What we could accomplish with potions would be amazing.
Transfiguration and Charms? Everyone knows what they can do. Trismegistus in both would give us the greatest set of magical options. Charms in particular covers so much magic that it might as well be the "be good at magic" choice. Both combined together is essentially mastery of a battle. Charms not working against a foe? Start adding some transfiguration to your spellcasting to throw the opponent off his or her game. Transfigure the ground into ice or a sinkhole or whatever else strikes your fancy.
This build is naturally not without downsides. The biggest downside is that all three are fairly broad/big subjects that cover a lot of things. Each Trismegistus slot would be boosting a massive amount of stuff in each field and thus result in an overall slower progression. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Charms which covers well over 50% of spells/magic and even includes parts of magic from the Dark Arts and so on. Birdsie has stated that our progression for Charms would have us learning post-graduate charms by the time Harry is studying for OWLs. So year 5. Which is bonkers speed and more than worth it considering how vast the subject of Charms is as our arsenal would be humongous. We would just be progressing with a faster speed if we chose a more refined sub-subject or branch of magic where we could be professor level by year 4/5. Transfiguration and Potions are probably to result in a faster progression than Charms. Perhaps close enough to professor level by year 4/5?
One other less than ideal issue is that Potions does not have much synergy with Charms and Transfiguration. While you can certainly make some potions to help you out in a battle where you use Charms and Transfiguration (maybe something to boost your reflexes or strength) but it mainly is another avenue.
This build is not designed to beat
The Dark Lord in a magical duel. Hell, I imagine that no build would be able to do so. Not without a decade+ of time to train and get up to speed. Birdsie said that with Trismegistus in say Charms/Transfiguration it would take us ten to fifteen years to become as skilled as Dumbledore. Which is absolutely amazing progression but it isn't quite fast enough as we assume that our conflict with
The Dark Lord will come sooner. If we had ten or fifteen years to train? This build and all other builds would be holy shit amazing. It would be a lot of time for Trismegistus to work its magic and our own raw magical power to develop.
So why am I fond of this build? This build is meant to deal with every other situation we come across. Death Eaters, magical creatures, drunk wizards harassing our significant other, assassinations that we need to arrange, duelling competitions that we want to take part in, ancient magical temples with deadly traps, and so on. We have no idea regarding what we will confront. This build is designed primarily to confront nearly everything that we face and give us great odds of success. Dungeon crawling, fighting, magical research, competitions, and more will be handled. Also, this build is most likely to get us the most amount of general public relations boost. By being the next up and coming super prodigy at the three big fields of magic we will boost our rep as the Boy Who Lived the most. No wonder we survived the killing curse. We're a super wizard of unfathomable talent. And so on. If we're known as the next Dumbledore people will come flocking us for alliances. With our general preference for making friends...we could really create a massive circle of friends and allies. And when
The Dark Lord comes back? People will know that we are a great wizard and we will provide them massive massive amounts of hope much like people put their faith in Dumbledore to be able to beat Grindelwald and
The Dark Lord. A more specialized Trismegistus build is likely to not garner as much awe. Say we choose three spells as our picks. We would have three absolutely amazing spells that we will continue to push but each spell will take decades to truly become a broken spell. We will be above average with everything else. Nothing truly remarkable.
This build is also the most likely to fit Harry's desire of becoming the greatest wizard to ever live and that is a desire that I fully intend to support and help Harry reach.
A Blade Against the Dark
- Charms
- Transfiguration
- DADA
This build is very similar to the prior build but it switches out Potions for DADA. The reasoning for Charms and Transfiguration remains the same and as such much of the pros and cons are essentially the same. Where this build is in some respects better is that it has better synergy with Transfiguration and Charms than Potions does. DADA is a subject for learning how to defend against the Dark Arts. It covers topics such as Dark Creatures, dark magic, and how to defend against it. We alter A Great Wizard build into one focused on fighting the dark forces of the world. Given the conflicts that we will be facing this may not be a bad build at all. Also some overlap as a number of charms are part of the DADA subject. Some quicker progression with some spells I imagine. Easily the best build for fighting creatures such as Vampires, werewolves, and dark wizards.
Child of the Stars
- Charms
- Transfiguration
- Astrology
This build is similar to the above two though this time the third choice is astrology. Here is what we know of Astrology:
"Advanced divination subject, practiced via observation of the movements of celestial objects. Although its use is limited for now, Harry took efforts towards memorizing the core aspects and correspondences between certain stars and planets in the solar system, and their effects on magic back on Earth."
So the stars and planets in the solar system can effect magic back on Earth. Birdsie has revealed that the curse of the DADA position at Hogwarts is an extremely powerful Astrology/Enchantment effect. Targeting the esoteric with our spells will also be greatly helped by Astrology. And this big one:
"If you want to remove that annoying curse that forbids you from speaking the Dark Lord's name, Astrology would also be the goal"
Astrology seems very very potent and I can see it working very well with Charms and Transfiguration and help them be real good at dealing with esoteric stuff.
Now let us head into some other builds that differ a fair bit from prior builds.
Prince of Charms
- Charms
- Offensive Charms
- Patronus Charms
This build goes all in on Charms. Tris to Charms, Tris to sub-subject of Charms (assuming offensive Charms can be selected - if not switch with say Dark Charms) and Tris to the Patronus charms. Seems like a fairly great build on surface. Massive versatility of Charms, a further Tris slot into a branch of Charms resulting in a speedier increase with that branch, and finally a Tris slot for a single spell. All the massive growth of a Tris slot going directly into one single spell that can be broken in a fair powerful manner given time....and that is the issue. First we will have to learn said spell which might not be for a few years and during that time the Tris slot will be doing nothing. Secondly, the progression for a single spell Tris slot still requires decades of training to really push into ground-breaking levels. Naturally some relatively immediate (say a year) gains can be made with a single spell with Tris. Apparition for example would let us bypass the wards of Hogwarts if we give it the full undivided focus of a Tris slot. Probably one of the best effects from a spell getting a Tris slot after just a year of focus but other such spells may not be as equally useful. The Patronus Charm for example is useful against Dementors. We might be able to twist the Spell into being able to actually kill Dementors I suppose instead of driving them off but it is still a specialized spell for a use case. I imagine making it useful against other dark creatures and potentially even Dark Wizards would take much much longer. Having it affect Dark Wizards might take a decade or more even with a Tris slot focusing on it along with some extra xp gains from Charms and Offensive Charms slots.
Hit and Run
- Apparition
- Protego
- Reducto
A build that picks three spells for our Trismegistus slots. We would be outright monstrous with with those spells but our versatility would be lacking compared to the other builds. We wouldn't be a super prodigy in any of the fields and thus our progression would be more normal. And we still willl need time to truly turn the spells into game breaking spells. Reducto probably will be overpowered bullshit after a year or two or even be able to perhaps break some spell effects? Regardless, we would get some super spells in the short terms but they would leave us as predictable. Apparition, Protego and Reducto would be known as our go to spells and we would likely use them signficantly. Sooner or later a counter will be devised.
Suggest any builds you feel might be good or help refine any of the ones I mentioned.
A Great Wizard is my pick for many reasons (imagine Snape's face when he sees our absurd talent at Potions) and the one I feel will truly boost our rep as a wizard the most and give us the best chance at surviving all the situations that will be coming our. No single build will ever be able to overcome The Dark Lord unless we have a decade or more to train up before we have to confront our destined foe. As such we should should focus primarily on dealing with everything else. And with
A Great Wizard build...if we actually have the room to train for a decade to fifteen years we would be a monstrously capable wizard able to actually face
The Dark Lord. If not, we would be capable of facing nearly everything else.
