If it was a move from the top to rename the city, I don't think it would be a good precedent. But since it's coming from the residents, why not? Shouldn't people have the right to name their own city?

It's really interesting looking at how someone framing a gameplay choice affects how people think about it. The choice has no information in regard to who's doing it or why, I just came up with that reasoning off the cuff.
In other news, today's update will be brought to you by Soviet Imperialism!
Although Vasily was recalcitrant, he eventually acceded to the request for a name change. It was a purely symbolic move, after all.
Redtail has begun the implementation of his own economic plan to fix the issues still plaguing the economy of the West Griffonian Union. Although the late Governor Teafeather managed to blunt the damages, the only way she could fund the relief programs was through an unofficial alliance with reactionary industrialist Skerion Greyfeather. Now that the corporatists have been removed from power, Redtail can get to work redistributing their wealth to the masses.
A truly excellent day! The Reformisten have been driven from Hellquill and the pony population has been liberated by the SRL. Now, at long last, they are truly safe.
The new tank divisions have been deployed and have begun field training.
Despite appearances, these are not medium tank divisions. I haven't yet researched them, though they're high on the checklist.
Our contacts in Vanhoover have reported worrying signs from the Changeling Lands. Reports of buildup along the border, troops massing in Vaverfront, and preparations for… something. The possibilities are not good, and Vasiliy convened a private meeting amongst top officials.
The conclusion was clear. War would soon come to Equestria. Stalliongrad would have to help if the Equestrians were to have any chance of surviving, as Celestia's government had only just started to become aware of the danger. Alone, they would be crushed, and with Equestria gone Stalliongrad would have no chance.
However, as the majority of those at the gathering left, Sinister chose to stay behind in order to talk to Vasily alone...
The Changelings, Sinister informed Vasiliy, were an existential threat, one which would justify… if not any means, then alternative means in order to oppose them. Consider the fact that Yakyakistan had many mountains, and was easily defendable. Consider the fact that, due to the intervention in Nova Griffonia, Stalliongrad had access to Yakyakistan. Further consider that there was a small-yet-notable communist movement in the country. Finally, consider that if the movement could be… encouraged, shall we say, it would force Chrysalis to engage yet another front, one which she would have immense difficulty taking…
Vasily remained silent for a moment, and then nodded. For the security of the people and the defense of socialism, Sinister would have the support he needed for this project.
The Third Army under Katya Ironstead, an expert in winter warfare, was redeployed near the border for the stated purpose of bandit hunting efforts.
This passed muster, as the former frontier of Nova Griffonia had been taken over by bandits led by one 'Virgil', who had creatively named his new state after himself, and the bandits in question were raiding the West Griffonian Union. The justification was there.
Although the Party of Griffon Interests had been outlawed under the new government, their military arm known as the Falcons of Griffonstone was still at large. Heinrich Redtail has begun a campaign to crack down on them.
Beakolini has declared war on the Falcor Principality. Although there was surely some justification for it, it is clear that Wingbardy is merely interested in territorial expansion.
The rumors about the Changeling military buildup has finally reached the public. The idiots in Equestria are preaching how it's nothing to worry about, and that the people should remain calm. Behind the scenes, however, we have received news that Celestia is privately reorganizing the military and the government for the purpose of weathering the coming storm.
Certainly, some amount of the preparation is obvious to us. Our mutual border has been abandoned overnight, with the troops stationed there reporting abandoned outposts and no sign of the normally-regular patrols at all.
Falcor has been defeated, and annexed directly into Wingbardian territory. Observers wonder what the next target of Il Duce shall be…
Just because the world is beginning to heat up, it doesn't mean we can't abandon our socialist principles! A new year means new students, and it has become clear that the current school systems cannot handle the massive influx of ponies looking to learn. We must dedicate effort to improving our schools!
Sinister's plan has begun. Agents have been snuck into Yakyakistan under cover of darkness, and the leaders of the Ardin Communar Nam have agreed to the program. The ACD will, with the support of Stalliongrad's agents, attempt to build their support to the point that they can force an ultimatum to King Rutherford. If that fails, then they will attempt a revolt, with Stalliongrad lending their assistance.
Equestria is beginning to move toward a mobilized economy, one that is prepared for the war that is coming.
STZ has finally finished prototypes of the new T-34-76 tank, which should begin mass production soon.
The Griffonian Empire continues their attempts at reclaiming their lost territory, having just declared war on the nobility that declared their independence in response to Archon Eros' ascension to head of the regency council.
The ACN have become a major presence in Yak politics, organizing unions and assisting in Rutherford's industrialisation efforts.
And so it begins. Queen Chrysialis announced that, in revenge for the numerous 'humiliations and slights' the ponies in general and Celestia in particular have inflicted upon the Changeling Race, the Changeling Lands were now in a state of war against Equestria. As she declared that she would accept Death before Dishonor, the Changeling forces on the border attacked the Equestrian military. The world watches, and so do we. For now, that is...
Firstly, Soviet Imperialism as a reaction to Fascist Imperialism is nothing new. But with benevolent intentions, or at least benevolent justification? Never seen that before.
Secondly, things are heating up in Griffonia. Hopefully, the Griffon Empire and the blatant Mussolini expy annihilate each other, leaving our Longswordian comrades intact.
Lastly, I noticed Celestia was pursuing the "Extreme Measures" and the "Put Down the Magic of Friendship" foci. I saw the Let's Play over on SB. I swear to Pony Lenin, if we go through hell to help the Equestrian bourgeoisie take down the Changeling menace, only to get backstabbed by Tyrant Sun...
Yeah, that's why we need to put agents inside Equestria right about now, we can't let Daybreaker appear, we need to ignite the fires of revolution before we get burned down by the sun.
Our Town has officially accepted annexation into Stalliongrad! Despite protests at accepting the former Equalists into our state, Vasily was firm in his insistence that anypony can change, and ought to be given the chance if possible. He then used this to turn to his next announcement, the creation of a 'Socialist Union' to facilitate the international cooperation of communist countries.
Nestor, assigned to the process of integrating the militias into the Red Army, apparently started banging his head against the wall upon seeing what apparently counted as 'military discipline' in Our Town. Why, precisely, did they need anti-tank weaponry?
They are commanded by the pony version of Zap Brannigan?
"How are we supposed to stop tanks without anti-tank weapons?"
"It's simple! Tanks only have a limited amount of fuel. Therefore, if enough troops fling themselves under the tanks they will eventually run out of fuel trying to plow their way through the troops' bodies and be rendered helpless!"
"...That's your plan?"
"There's a reason I'm well known as a tactical genius!"
Last time on Equestria at War: The Changelings attack! Queen Chrysalis' forces have swarmed over the Equestrian border, and Celestia's army is barely holding itself together. In the east, Stalliongrad debates their policy toward the war, while members of the SNK agitate in Yakyakistan, attempting to secure a new ally against the shapeshifting threat.
Across the sea, the Aquileian Republic attempts to secure the states on its border, while the Griffonian Empire continues its war of reconquest. It is likely that the two titans will soon come into conflict, especially as the Aquilians have begun to make overtures toward the Skyfall Federation and the northern Republicans.
The Supreme Soviet is locked in fierce debate. Certainly, Equestria requires our help, that much is certain, but the idea of supporting Celestia's conservative regime disgusts many. Meanwhile, the debate is played out in miniature in the office of the General Secretary. Vasily is of the opinion that Equestria must come to Stalliongrad for assistance, and that support should be given conditionally. Nestor, meanwhile, disputes this idea, saying that socialist ideology must come second when the very survival of ponykind is at stake. Any time taken before fighting the Changelings is time that is wasted in his eyes.
Sinister, as he has made a habit of doing lately, offers a third option. Wait to assist the Equestrians until requested, and then use the opportunity to do in Equestria what Stalliongrad was currently doing in Yakyakistan. The war would likely cause chaos, and what better time for the workers to rise up and take their place in the world?

Sinister's a guy, FYI. And let's be fair here, Sinister's ideas, both national and otherwise, are great if you want to go to war. He's got a freaking 7.50% recruitable population increase in his focus tree!
