Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Learn how to use the Sight from Harry, you have a charm to keep from going insane spamming it.
Wait, that's an option? Exalted can actually learn that in this crossover? I mean, I suppose a big facet of Exalted is that anything a mortal can do, an Exalt can do better, so it makes sense, but…

Okay, hands up, how many people just had "magic lessons with Harry" take a big step up their priority list?

We got a no on using Dresden magic.
Not the normal kind, but he can teach us wizard's sight and some of the cross compatible alchemy stuff, which is supernatural enough to reasonably fall into the magic lessons category.

It'd also be a good idea, since being able to use it without going crazy could make it a substitute for multiple sensory charms, making it very exp efficient.

Edit:

Wasn't aware it was even a possibility.

Though, how would Molly even know she could do that?
Molly gets to know what her charms do, but she doesn't know what an exaltation is or anything of the general rules related to them.

She can demonstrate that she can't use magic, but in the scene where she tried to cast it she could still reach out to touch it with the weird wizard sensory feedback involved in doing so.

Since Molly doesn't know that exalts aren't allowed to keep the powers of their old templates and did get some sensory feedback from trying to cast I think there are good odds she'd consider trying to regain the sight worth trying.

Insert "this sign can't stop me because I can't read" meme here. :V

I almost wonder...
We can't learn Dresden Files magic, but could we use it to develop Sorcery? Or possibly Exalted style Thaumatology? Or to learn Hedge Magic cheaper?

We're explicitly allowed to buy dots in Sorcery Paths, and DP has mentioned Harry can be a trainer for that. And he mentioned just now that we can learn the sight. And we were given the option to take magic lessons from Harry on the last turn vote.

So if the word of the QM means anything than, yes, we can get something from taking magic lessons from Harry. XP

Yeah the issue with USING DF magic is that our minimum power unit is an antimatter reaction yield, and DF magic is built on gasoline. Shouldn't affect things like opening up the senses or broader principles like "how to grab energy and yeet it.

Molly doesnt have to take a vow to recognize the equivalent of dick move.
Or how that would affect her reputation.
This here is where I see a dissonance in our expectations and world view. So far in the interactions with the monk who is teaching us, and in Molly's life experience, I don't think that "knowledge is something to be hoarded and sharing it is wrong" is a mindset that Molly internalized in regards to magical martial arts. Master's time is precious and normally teaching takes a lot of time - that's a fair reasoning as to why monks don't teach more people, or why more people don't try to learn. Some knowledge is dangerous which is why only those who pass certain moral tests / have character witnesses should be taught - that, too, I can see Molly understanding. But "knowledge is sacred, and should only be shared as a very precious gift with as few people as possible, and ideally not shared at all outside of our closed religious group"... I don't think that's within Molly's base assumptions, unless specifically noted by her monk teacher. Remember, she's a catholic. Preaching to others and spreading one's religion and its practices is a core concept of Christianity.

I've got to agree with Yog on that.

Also Molly does not have the same PoV on the martial art anyway. It's not her one weapon against overpowered forces of darkness for her, just one minor tool in her array of options that include primarily her own Charms and also Ancient Sorcery and regular Sorcery.

There is no inherent understanding that the Art falling into the wrong hands would be a big problem, because for her it isn't.

What is more of a problem is that learning to access your own Chi is very hard and usually requires intensive training for a decade from early childhood.

We bypassed that thanks to being able to use Essence, but that's not available to anyone else.

Lydia, who is the only person I considered teaching so far, might be able to do something similar, with her access to her divine ancestry and power.

Also, since we are close to the xp purchasing turn, with regards to VEE, what are the backgrounds/Merits that we can help people wish for?

Like, if we want to give Molly's mom/dad/siblings any advantages, what would we give them?

Yeah, I can actually see Lydia being modeled as something like an Exigent Exalted, given her heritage. Maybe not exactly the same, but given how easy it supposedly used to be to form Exigents, it's something I could see happening. And it would be a convenient way for DP to model her mechanically and set her up as a potential member of our future Circle.

We're capped at five dot merits; I think.

Some good ones are:

Charmed Life: ignore one result of 1 per roll, which makes you much less likely to botch or fail
Self Confident: If you spend willpower for an automatic success on a roll for something that's not easy (difficulty 6+) and succeed, then you don't spend the Willpower

These two are great when combined as well.

More controversially, we could possibly turn them into Changeling with the Fae Blooded merit.

Code of Honour which gives two dice for Willpower rolls relating to the code could be useful for Michael

There's the every popular Legendary Attribute, but that takes more work to develop

The merit version of Spirit Magnet might be very useful in this setting.

Otherwise there are a few situationally useful ones. The Dragon Touched merits that give exalted healing and toughness are also pretty good.

Alternativly her powers could be modeled as Werewolf-Gifts/ Spirit Charms.

But using Gnosis would propably similar enough to Chi that she would have the same advantage in Shi-Arts anyway.

Honestly, that's a long way away. The only 5-dot Charm I see us getting any time soon is EIPP, because Shaping Defenses. Otherwise we'll be stocking up on more essential Charms to fill out our base build and cover our weaknesses before we go for the fancy stuff like VEE.

And honestly, we should probably be careful about giving out VEE wishes to allies, since three wishes turns someone into a Creature of Darkness and makes them instinctively loyal to us, which is kind of horrible to do to family. And I think DP once mentioned that even one wish can leave a noticeable taint of hell magic if it's the right thing.

However, our little "helper kami" are already bound to be loyal to us and as tainted by our magic as it's possible to get, so if Clippy wants to wish for literally magical cell reception or whatever we should totally grant that once we get the Charm.

Well, at least I Shen supposedly runs on divine power, so I don't see why a demigod like Lydia couldn't learn it…

Thaumaturgy worked off rules that no longer apply in the world so no on that one, Ancient Sorcery does still work, but it is not really compatible with modern day magic. You cannot change it, or invent it without gaining enough authority to take a screwdriver into the deepest parts of reality, you would need power akin to the primordials to even try that... and some people would be upset if you did.

What you can do is rediscover that rules and principles of sorcery survive and use those

Arc 2 Interlude 3: The Last Piece
The Last Piece

22st of July 2006 A.D.

The only sound in the room is the faint hiss of water in the shower as I stand there like a log ready for someone to yell 'timber'. He had a kid? The Ankou had a kid and she was in my house... Fuck, fuck, fukedy fuck. It's probably a good thing I couldn't speak yet because Charity would never forgive me for cursing that much in front of Molly.

Now the girl in question eyes sparkling with mirth and smile not really hiding went about explaining what they had been doing while I was locked up in federal jail. They did good, of course they did good, Michael was with them, scared off a bunch of ghouls, banished a ghost, rescued Matthews granddaughter... poor bastard, no matter what he might have done once upon a time it's clear he had been keeping his nose, but I didn't even want to think of that a rogue valkyrie would do to him, what she might need from him. To replace Gorfel maybe in the ritual... The damn ritual.

"Wait, how do you know about the Ankou and Mab?" I finally manage to get a question out in something like a normal tone of voice.

"Mouse let me in to talk to Bob," Molly replies as though that was the most normal thing in the world. I look down at the pooch in question who just shook his head at me as if to say 'well what else was I gonna do'

The thought of her and Bob in the same room was enough to momentarily start me from mounting dread. "You talked to Bob?"

Molly giggles, like honest to goodness giggle, and rolls her eyes. "Yeah don't worry I know his spirit animal is Pepe Le Pew, he's fun to talk to though." She goes on to explain what Bob had told her and what she had shared in return from 'scrying' Katrina. All the pieces except for one tinny tiny detail, the same way a bomb without the fuse was almost complete.

I really did not have the bandwidth for that request right now... so of course that was when a girl a little younger than Molly white streaked hair still dripping from the shower walked in with an elegance no teenager should have been able to have, much less one wearing jeans that had been unintentionally ripped.

"Hi!" she says, extending her hand with more determination than exuberance. "You must be Harry, you're going to help me find dad right? He's..." she sighs. "He's missing, I know it's going to be a debt, but I can bear it if I have to. Least I can do for messing up with the Grey Heir..." she cuts her self off looking at Molly and Gard on the couch. "The evil ghost, that's what she called herself."

There are a lot of answers I could give to that question, evasive answers and common sense answers, even answers that would not technically be lying while I figure out what the hell I was going to do. I open my mouth and what comes out was none of those things: "Sure I'll help."

You're going to need all the help in the world kid... and so am I.

"Er... Harry, can we talk for a bit in private?" Molly asks looking at you worried and all too perceptive.

I was going to say no but it was her or Gard I was going to have to explain this to eventually and much as Gard was sure to have the most experience she was on Monoc's side, maybe on Marcone, not on mine and certainly not on Lydia's.

And that is how Molly Carpenter ended up sitting on my bed looking expectantly at me while I closed the door and I could not even bring myself to worry about how that would look under the circumstances.

"OK, spill. What has you worried like death warmed over?"

"This is a very important secret..." Stars and Stones what was I doing telling this to Molly? a part of me screamed, but then I remembered the dead Red Vampires in the alleyway, the way she had helped deal with Matthews, the fact that I would still be in jail if she had not fount that proof. Like it or not she was already in this up to her neck. "Revealing it would cause significant loss of face for Queen Mab."

She nods seriously, eyes still fixed on my face beneath the many-streaked hair.

And so you tell her: "Ankou isn't working for Mab anymore, hasn't worked for her for ninety years...."

Gain 2 Essence -> Now at 9/12

"Wait... but Bob said that the kind of vows Ankou made to Winter cannot be unsaid or escaped," she interrupts.

"They can't normally, but Arawn was old as he was patient and according to Mab of all the necromancers he faced none were so slippery nor so clever as Kemmler himself. But when it looked like Ankou had finally cornered the bastard back in 1917 Kemlmer made a deal with him, to teach him the secrets of mortality as only men know them, as only mortal men are meant to know them, allowing him to slip the chains of Winter and be something like what he used to be."

"A god..." she trails off. "Not a death god, bound to one specific culture, empowered by the faith of his worshipers, but a god of death, drawing his power from all from all expressions of death which are not claimed, sorrow and lamentation, anger and acceptance. It's... well it's probably not very efficient or he would be far past the power of the likes of Capricorpus or Katrina to harm even though the Black Feast uses that very shared understanding of mortality." She pauses for a moment just absorbing it all. "Wait if he is not hunting necromancers at Mab's behest then why is he hunting the heirs of Kemmler."

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 8/12

"I'm not sure..." you sigh, trying very hard not to think of how quickly she had sprouted off a theory about how you could jump-start divine nature with necromantic knowledge. "My best guess was because they know some part of what Kemmler shared with him, because they are a danger to him. Well either that or he still doesn't like necromancers."

"He's not evil you know," she says after a moment. "I have talked to Lydia about her father, before and after this whole thing came out and the worst he seems to have done is let the servants and the library raise her."

"I don't think Mab is going to give a damn about that...."

"Wait, what did you promise her specifically? That you would find Ankou and alert her, not capture him? You could tell her where he is just in time for him to run..."

"I promised to find him than summon Mab as soon as I am able with the news," I explain, mind racing to think of how I could get out of this. "The reason I insisted on the last part is because I couldn't drop a summoning circle in the middle of the street."

What does Molly reply?

[] What if you were not able to call her for a long time after finding Ankou... I had this idea about conditional bindings to help me train better so I can use my escape charm. What if... I know this is going to sound crazy... you make a deal with Lasciel's shadow to stop you from summoning Mab for the next week or something. Since she is in your head she can stop you from doing specific acts of magic if you surrender that to her.

[] We should call Mab now, see what she intends and if it's too bad... well we'll burn that bridge when we get to it
