Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Also in case it was not clear by now all of Molly's ideas about what a gangster is come from stereotypes about the Cosa Nostra and Al Capone via Hollywood. Expect her to quote Scarface at Marcone if he tries to intimidate her or something. :V

I was wondering when someone would catch this one. Yes he is a Shih. I even tracked down Demon Hunter X for the most recent version of the Qiao.
Nice.

FYI for other people in this thread, Exalts specifically can learn Shih arts. IIRC of most relevance to us are attribute-increasing Qiao, but there might be a couple of others that are also good.

A Light on Dark Trails
-Ahnenerbe backstory?
That means that dude speaking Icelandic wasnt a coincidence.
We have Nazi sorcerers in the house.

-Marcone is not the only candidate for killing the dude.
Fiddling with the bones of dead humans suggests necromancy, which puts you on the White Council's shoot on sight list.
Law Number Five to be exact.

Hell, given that Dead Beat and the events of the Darkhallow was October last year, roughly eight or nine months ago, magical Chicago likely has a lethally dim view of necromancers.
Plus there's the Erl King's views on the matter.

The warlock is a dead man walking as soon as his face gets out on the street.

-Marcone is not going to kill them in the presence of a Knight and a bunch of monks and whatever Molly is.
Why incriminate himself?

- Eh. Marcone deserves his money. Collecting bones that were stolen sixty or seventy years ago is a nontrivial investment of effort.
Especially if you are doing so in the face of armed occult opposition. And especially if there are more human bones out there, and you want the finder to give you right of first purchase if he finds them again.

[X] Call Marcone to pick up his money, you'll deal with him when he gets here

We brought Marcone's men here, so this safehouse is already compromised.
No point trying to keep it secret.
Dont split the party; we probably want both Michael and Molly sitting on the Nazi warlock and his minions.

Huh.
Gonna need to look that up.

Media references?
Lol. Expected for a teenager who is a movie buff(see Splattercon), but still hilariously cringe.

You already have her watching anime with her weeb younger brother Mathew, and its the mid-2000s.
I am waiting to see her refer to her first shintai as a shikai, her second shintai as a bankai, and her inner Hell as Soul Society
:V

I don't think Marcone would prefer for his men to just transport the cash themselves, not after what has happened. The situation has become complicated, to say the least, and he will most likely want to prevent the situation from getting anymore tangled that it already is. Knowing him and his own sense of honor, there is a non-zero chance he'll wave his fee entirely due to a perceived failure to secure his territory and informatio network.

That said, we don't really know what he wants but it's easy enough to find out before making any assumptions. We can just call and ask.

[X] Circumstances have changed since the deal was struck and there is a new player on the board, or perhaps an old one rearing its ugly head. Either way, their actions were overt and bloody, and that is certain to draw attention no one involved in this exchange wishes to garner. Rather than deciding how to proceed in this matter and potentially complicating things even further, we should contact Marcone and learn how exactly he wishes to receive his payment.
-[X] Give Marcone the option of sending his goons with the money, him meeting us somewhere safe from prying eyes to make the exchange, or doing as the monk suggested and wiring him the funds.

So, that sounds like the Exalted Host all turned into Abyssal like things, or at least that's what is remembered.

Keep in mind that Usum told you about the Wuan Kuei, the Ten Thousand Demons are a very present supernatural faction, known to the White Council as the Jade court. They are born of those damned souls with the will and the cunning to escape Yomi Wan and crawl back into their corpses. They also subsist on stolen chi. Chi is not Essence, in fact Chi is the same magic you can feel all around you and as one born with a magical talent you can manipulate in the world. The Shih are not wizards, they are not even sorcerers and would be counted as minor practitioners by the White Council, only they have full control of their own Chi, allowing them to achieve effects that even true wizardry struggles with... at the low low price of burning up their life like kindling.

A human has 10 Chi, ideally 5 Ying and 5 Yang, though most are not so lucky as to be balanced. If such a beacon of spiritual balance were to spend 6 Chi, three and three they would just barely survive. There is a 'restore youth and health' power that does that, if you botch it you leave behind a very nice looking corpse. Generally speaking though if a Shih spends 4 they have to rest.

You... well if you learned the arts of the Shih you would just spend essence one for one, that thing of which you have 10 to spend down to the ground of as a baby exalt and regen 4 per day naturally and which you literally cannot enter a scene without at least 1.

Aha, I was very much mistaken in what connections I was making then, thank you for correcting me.

I'm not saying there is no connection, just pointing out that it may not be as direct as the first glance might indicate. I mean immortal heroes drawn up from the best of mankind to battle unsanctioned demons does sound like the Exalted right?

More study if required, as Molly's urge would incline her. ;)

The thing I'm nervous is about is that while Marconi can be fair and reasonable, he is also aware of how he has to appear to his subordinates to remain the boss. He can't appear subservient to people. That's why I'm nervous about whether having him come to us might seem like a presumptuous demand, and Molly has probably watched enough stuff about crime bosses to get that, even if her nature occasionally compels her to act similarly dominant.

Essence converts to Chi at one to one?

I guess I underestimated Chi.

Well no Chi is the normal magic of the world that is, the trouble is that Essence can only exist in mote form, the Exaltation has no way to spend less than 1 mote of essence at things. So let's say a power has three places where you are meant to spend chi, run, spend, jump, spend, strike spend. That is three essence even though in absolute terms you are way over-burning.

I'd expect the effects to also commesurately increase, maybe even to normally unsafe levels.

The energy probably doesn't just disappear, so unless we're upgrading the anima shroud, or improving the effect, where does it go?

If there is a connection to the Exalted I would imagine it was actually to the Dragon-Blooded. There are only 700 Celestials; 300 Solars, 300 Lunars, and 100 Sidereals originally before 50 Solars corrupted into Infernals and 100 Solars corrupted into Abyssals.

The Dragon-Blooded meanwhile were called "The Ten Thousand Princes of Earth" which lines up rather neatly.

The excess energy splashes out into the world as 'normal magic'. If you try to put twelve gallons of gas in a one gallon tank it is not going to make your lawnmower mow the lawn twelve times faster, it is just going to spill gas all over the place. Now you could try to make a bigger faster lawnmower but that is called 'trying to reinvent Celestial Martial Arts from base principles'.

Interesting.

I am guessing it has the same relation then to Hedge Magic - Ancient Sorcery?

Just as you stated, to CMA.
