Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Molly doesn't know what nemesis is, and she was warned about manipulation rather than possession. She has no reason to think to ask that specific question other than our OOC knowledge.

Limiting the question to the higher echelons of winter will help filter out the background noise.

The ruling was that it has to be a significant amount of water, it is noticeable.

The thing is this is a chronic pattern with us. In the past we at least used oils that could be passed off as something magical, but getting casual with the details is the sort of thing that comes back to haunt you.

A little bit of cover now makes the job of someone trying to pick us apart by investigating our behaviors significantly harder in the future.

Doing stuff like this makes it as simple as pattern recognition and a small data set.
1) She was told there were signs of Winter's manipulation by the enemy.
When you think that there is enemy influence on a faction's decisions, the first thing you rule out is infiltrators/double agents in the chain of command in positions of authority.

2)Yes, a noticeable amount. What there is is no sign of the water being magical in nature, or having a magical effect.
I will point out that we have used this before (being wet) in front of OldManSkavis, while flying. In that case it was from rain.
And he's an elder, with advanced Disciplines.

So either the secret is out there, or its less obvious than you assume. At least to Whampires

3)Respectfully disagree.
Im speaking as the guy who is usually the voice of paranoia here, but when you hear hooves, you think horses not zebras.
Two girls returning from a public restroom, one of them wet, spells bathroom accident, not magical ritual.

Im not saying be reckless, but right here, right now, in these circumstances? Its not an issue, IMO.
This is less obvious than when we fought Eiko in the lobby of the hotel with the sprinklers active.

Molly has to be visibly wet, if she goes around dumping water on herself people will figure out water is good for her basically instantly.

IF she goes around dumping water on herself.
Molly is not walking around dumping water on herself indiscriminately, she is just using it in situations where its plausible she will be wet.

There is a reasonable argument for caution when choosing where to use BSM, and I agree.
I just think this is a reasonable situation, just like it was reasonable for us walking into Agent Greene's home when wet, or fighting Eiko in the lobby of the hotel when wet and with sprinklers active, or fighting the greater akuma when wet from a bottle of water.

Ultimately, though, BSM is meant to be used.
We can't let the risk of people figuring it out prevent us from actually using it.

On review, I want to draw attention to this exchange:
"That is a remarkable statement you understand," she says after a moment. "Beings, spirits, all have natures, all have wants that need filling, to deny them so utterly not by understanding, but simply by pledge is the domain of powers divine or otherworldly. Are you a god miss Carpenter?"

"What a strange question to ask? Don't you think so Lydia?" You turn to the other girl. "I mean on the one hand she demands that I take on a title or spurn it and one the other she assigns me one."
'Miss' like 'Mister' after all had belonged to the nobility before the middle class, though only the esoteric courtesies of the hidden world would count that as an actual title of nobility, or for that matter count misappropriating someone's titles as a faux pas.

"Are you sure you wish to deny your own overlordship so lightly? I think Thomas will be quite sad," she counters, sly laughter dancing in her eyes even as her lips are still and perfect as ever.
Lara asks Molly if she is a god.
And instead of denying it, Molly chooses to avoid answering the question, and deflects instead
I'm sure Lara didn't notice that at all, or draw her own conclusions.

Totally normal behavior
:V

I dont know if that was intentional, but if so very well done @DragonParadox

This is really reaching. We come to that conclusion immediately because we know the answer. For all Molly knows manipulate means bribery, disinformation campaigns, and blackmail. None of which qualify as possession. You might as well just directly ask about Meave if you're going to inject that much OOC knowledge into our question formulation.

This.

As you yourself pointed out, one vamp knowing something doesn't mean all of them do. Even then the more overt we are the more this sort of thing moves from inferred secret to common knowledge.

A huge number of DF supernaturals are gimmick bosses, this is the sort of detail they're basically trained from birth to pick up on.

Right now most data points are ambiguous, showing we can use tap water is a significant slip.

Two girls returning from a public restroom, one of them wet, spells bathroom accident, not magical ritual.
Unless they're clearly powerful supernaturals in an important meeting. Lara isn't going to think like a high schooler seeing someone sneak back into class. She's also clearly digging into us and is capable of examining old data in new contexts.

Even if she did is that really the impression we want to give? That we screwed up using a toilet so hard we came back out looking like we had a bath?

I wish we had the prayer eating power right now even if Molly was unwilling to use it. Just to make that exchange even better.

That was very much intentional. Not that Molly thinks of herself as a god, even in the little g sense, but there is no reason not to keep your adversary guessing in social combat and say what you will about the Whites they are good at this, as seen by the fact that they managed to turn this around on Molly by making her doubt her own position vis a vis Thomas, enough so for Lara to also draw her own conclusions. Molly was going for 'implacable juggernaut' with that image and it cracked a little when Lara made her metaphorically blink.

I think it might be better to ask how the enemy alleged in the note is manipulating Winter than who.

Molly doesn't know about nemesis, a list of names doesn't tell her that much about how to respond to the situation.

Asking how though should get us a description of nemesis infection and possibly some of the important people who've been grabbed depending on how specific it gets.

The crown tends to deal in the concrete, so I'm willing to bet we'd bet a response closer to "suborning the winter lady/ Leansidhe to push for X" than "by mind controlling nobles".
Asking who gives her additional foci. If we know who is being manipulated, we know who not to trust, and we know who to use the crown on to ask "how, why, by whom, since when, to what consequences", etc.

Arc 7 Post 10: Sight Beyond Reckoning
Sight Beyond Reckoning

31th of October 2006 A.D.

As the note burns you look into the fire's depths and ask: "Who are the people among the Winter Fey who the enemy of which this note speaks of has subverted." You look through it and see the void between the blades of light: Not people, not named, not-will, not-right, not-BEIMG. The thing is writ upon the face of the world by the prey it devours, an emptiness illuminated by pyre's flame, plague parasite and pestilence, known by the curses of its foes: The Enemy/Nemesis.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 10/12

Pain thrums in your temples, like the mother of all hangovers without the fun part as you are left with the vague sense of shapes moving in the dark, a round peg being shoved in a square hole, a multidimensional object squeezed into three by mechanisms as old as time, by Necessity.

Water lies cold upon your hands, moving with purpose, upon your face whispering secrets lost to the living and the dead: Aodh son of Luchtaine, who carved Shield and Haft, now crooked counsel crooked craft, Cathair First of the Rawheads, Meave, Mab's daughter, night-poisoned child of barren land and lightless hearth.

Regained 2 Essence -> Now at 12/12

"Some things, may be unavoidable Lydia." How you manage to keep your voice level after what you had just found out you're not sure. Maybe you're getting used to this and ain't that a terrifying realization all on its own? Running water again over your hands and into the t-shirt you are wearing under the mail is fresh comfort, the whispers of the ocean encouragement, soft but all encompassing. "I don't think our mutual acquaintance would be asking for help unless she really needs it..." And gosh darn does she need it. Is there a cure for being infected with sapient Outsider Plagues?

Alas on that one Usum is as clueless as you are.

As you reach for the door you stop dead, thinking. If Lara is on the right side of this, which she seems to be, then giving her the names, at least two of the names would help deal with a part of the security breach without revealing to Mab that you can pull even these secrets from scribbled notes and half guessed patterns. Of course you would be revealing it to the vampire regent.

So whose more trustworthy, the queen of the wicked faeries or the soul sucking vamp? It's almost enough to make you giggle thinking of them like that, though you know it would come out shaky, nervous

Essence twists into patterns familiar as breathing, as opening your eyes. shadows deepen into welcoming dark and colors ripple with texture that had before been hidden. Lydia is wrapped as if in the moonlight shroud of her own anima, though you know that you alone can see her. That part of your mind that is ever asking questions, even when still reeling from the last answer you had gotten wonders how precisely your friend is 'of the dark', the term is as slippery as an eel for all you have an instinct grasp of who should be in it and who not, the same who are inclined to bow and give obeisance.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 11/12
Lost 1 Willpower -> Now at 8/9

"That they may not escape you Majesty Most Puissant," the demon in your mind points out, seemingly unshaken by the revelations of the last few minutes. Of course he isn't, he thinks you are going to take over the world like some kind of Bond Villain.

Alas before you can think of a retort you notice a ripple in the air, vaguely humanoid in shape hanging right above Lara, motionless as a spider, a spy under a veil.

What do you do?

[] Fix your gaze on it to try to figure out what it is (In addition to the Perception+Occult roll of the Charm Molly will roll Manipulation+Subterfuge opposing the Watcher's Perception+Alertness in order not to be caught looking)

[] You've seen it, it has not seen you, it is clearly a spy, attack

OOC: Well you guys voted to turn on the esoteric charm sight that just works as a passive so here you are... Creature of Darkness spying on you, now you need to decide what to do about it.

Molly's Crown remains her most singularly terrifying ability, also oh shit a spy.

I'm not entirely certain what to do with this information, or rather how to use it best.

Edit: It may be worthwhile to intimate the thing to Lara, just in case it is her own insurance.

Measure twice, cut once. You only, in the end, need to cut once. For all we know this is someone from the White Council spying on us. It could be a winter fae spying on the meeting that someone INSISTED happen before we met Mab. It could be Lara's security watching her back. It could be any number of things.

We should not attack until we know.

We really need more info if we're to engage or not.

Two typos to correct. If you don't want me to point them out in the future, just say so and I won't.

The first one isn't a typo, it is a struggle to render what Nemesis is in English. It has a power that is not quite a perfect defense, but is annoying camouflage since it is both itself and its host it always shows to the observer whichever of its sides would be most advantageous to its purposes. So an unprepared wizard might get an eye full of Outsider and go mad and a careful well prepared investigator might scry only the host and miss the infection. Unfortunately for it God King's sight says 'screw you' and just showed Molly both, basically looking through one vision and into the other

so im not sure on the short term so no comment on that. middle term i would say we give lara two names and ask for their capture. tell her we are trying some anti outsider elixiers and test subjects would be helpful. when we have one or both or their corpses we can ask how to cure their outsider illnes. if on the first try dont work, ask how to destroy the outsider illnes without killing the patient. if that is also resisted ask how to remove all outsider influence from the victim with the least harm possible.

-[X] Using both relevant excellencies

That would be 4 motes spent total. I am always confused, is our max 3 or 4 dots spent before anima flare?

Also, this information might be enough for Mab not to automatically kill us for having the Crown.

I am very glad we have Hellscry now. Along with the ritual to remove Nemesis.
