Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

[X] Replace Green Sun Nimbus Flare with By Agony Empowered, making Molly less vulnerable to being overwhelmed by mundane damage

Wait.. What does Green Sun Nimbus Flare actually do?
After successfully striking a target and inflicting damage with an attack, the player may reflexively spend 1 Essence to inflict (highest of Strength, Charisma, or Intelligence) levels of automatic aggravated damage.

The problem is that as it is, it was too powerful and was nerfed so opponents soak it seperately.

That makes basically useless against the opponent's we want to use it on.

Worse, we spend 1 Essence to do nothing.

We also used it on Holt, it was what drove her to burn her perfect defense.

It's been an element of every boss fight, and a key element of killing of first two noteworthy opponents.
It is a dead charm and we wasted 1 Essence to do basically nothing.

It depends far too much on the dice and 4 agg damage is soakable by most boss we fight.

It literally makes us spend 1 Essence to do damage that our opponent soaks for free.

To add more to the discussion....

So here is how @DragonParadox is ruling on GSNF. As in how it is currently used.

Say Bob has 15 soak. Molly attacks and rolls and does, say, 5 agg damage. Bob soaks agg, so he then rolls his entire 15 soak and gets 4 sux, meaning Molly does 1 dmg.

As it is a successful damage, she spends reflexively spends 1 Essence for GSNF and does 5 agg damage, no rolls needed. Bob then, again, rolls his entire 15 Soak again against the 5 agg damage, ignoring the result of the previous sux. He rolls soak and gets 5 sux. So GSNF does no damage.

So Bob rolls soak twice, once against the normal attack that did damage and once against GSNF.

So we spend 1 Essence and the Enemy rolls the entire soak, armor and all, for free. Meaning they can soak the damage for free and do not have to spend any resources to do so, but we loose 1 Essence.

Also keep in mind that our Essence use per turn is LIMITED.

Meaning we can ONLY spend 2 Essence per turn at E2. So not only do we spend 1 Essence for nothing, we also use up one of our Essence "slots" for that turn.

This is why I am pushing so hard against GSNF as it is.

That in itself is a very unlikely step.

Unless Bob is Exalted or has a level 8 or 9 Iron Mountain power he won't use his full soak against aggravated damage.

Say rather that Bob has like 5 Soak against Agg, coming from Fortitude or Iron Mountain, plus some more from Armor.

Then, if Molly deals any damage, the 5 levels from GSNF suddenly don't look so bad, since the soak against them is propably not that high.
Especially since I would not allow people or creatures with armor to use that against a purely internal additional damage.

I am using examples but Bob would use his entire soak. Or to put it another way, we do agg damage by default. So any armor Bosses use against our regular attack works against GSNF.

So full soak used against our regular attack is rolled against GSNF. Armor and all, even though GSNF erupts internally.

See the problem?

Because that is how it is being treated.

The damage boost does do something, it's just not as effective right now. Even that nerf is temporary already.

From my perspective getting rid of it is very weird from an IC perspective since it's been noticeable so frequently, and buffing everyone else is too likely to bust something else in the combat system.

So the only reasonable option is to continue as we have been, and work around the differences in functionality until they go away.

It's not like it's been ruining the game so far.

[X] Keep the current patch: Green Sun Nimbus Flare is soakable by things that can soak Aggravated Damage. At Essence 4 that is no longer the case
[X] Meet with one of Mab's daughters and try to gain their support

I mean, if we prioritized buying a higher essence level, we could get there fairly easily. It just hasn't been a priority compared to shoring up our weak points.

@DragonParadox how would car crafting be handled? What are we going to be rolling? Craft only? Or Technology for design (with Cyberdevil assistance) and Craft for, well, crafting?I want to run some calcs.

We have yet to hit E3 despite being on Act 6.

So do not expect it to be "temporary".
It is literally temporary; there's a specific upgrade point, and essence levels have specific exp totals associated with them.

It might take a while, but this arc has been unusually long. DP seems like he wants to increase the arc churn going forward, so hitting milestones won't involve as much painful waiting before we can improve.

-[X] A car with not a singe atom of iron in it

So, I actually talked to my dad about this, since he's a mechanical engineer and knows a lot more about cars than me, and what he said pushed me into thinking that this is definitely the best bet. Making a car without any iron is possible, but it would be ridiculously expensive and effort-intensive to make. Every part, from the normally-steel ball bearings, to the headlights, to the break pads would have to be custom-made, including several materials basically invented specifically for the purpose. None of which is a problem for a crafting-favored Exalt with TTC and resources 4, but it would be basically impossible for anyone to replicate without an enormous amount of effort. And repairs would also be really hard, because, again, every part is custom-made. So she might be willing to trade minor favors for repairs if it gets wrecked, because it would take a lot of effort for her to get anyone else to repair it. Which makes it a very useful political gift, because it makes us continue to be useful to her going forward, if not in an irreplaceable way.

Also, Mechanics is our specialty for Craft, and that literally includes cars as part of the description, so we get to use our full 14 dice with Excellency before adding in cheese like stunting and WHWH. We have a decent chance of breaking the 15 successes "even other Celestial Exalts think you're showing off" threshold for this. Build it with Mab specifically in mind and it will be worth a lot as a gift.

It is so weird how many people are voting for us to be weaker. It even seems to be the goal of the vote. We can buy GSN again when we get to essence 4. Right now we might as well accept the fairly generous trade in.

Changed my vote. I don't like being so vulnerable to mooks with guns. It's disgraceful, and since we try not to kill humans it means we actually need to be worried about that. Going foward as we shake things up I fully expect us to deal with more and more mooks.
