Day 22 Chapter 10
[X] Join Madoka, Sayaka, and Hitomi in going to the mall
-[X] What are you doing once you get there?
--[X] Buy everyone a pretty new dress
--[X] Visit a music shop

"Hey Homura, you wanna come to the mall with us?" The voice is Sayaka's, and joining her are Madoka and Hitomi. Madoka looks on you with expectant eyes. Sayaka, for her part, sounds much less upset than she did this morning, or even at lunch. "Come on, it'll be fun! What'd'ya say?"

Your mind was made for you the instant you saw Madoka looking at you expectantly, but you withhold your answer from Sayaka, waiting until she can take waiting no longer before saying. "Well, I don't have archery practice today, so I suppose I'd have time to go to the mall with you all."

Madoka is the first of you to smile, saying "Ah, you will? That's great!"

"It just wouldn't be the same without you, ya know?" Sayaka claps you on the back as you stand to join your friends. "But since you're coming with us, now we're really gonna have a good time!"

"I'm sure we will."

"Oh wow, look at this one," Sayaka says, holding the dress out in front of her at arm's length. It's black with a light grey trim and violet ribbons strategically placed for decoration. "Your colours exactly, Homura. Madoka picked this one out just for you, you know, so you'd better like it!"

While it would have been faster to walk to the station closer to Tomoe-san's apartment and to take the northwest-heading train into Downtown from there, doing so would have risked causing your party of friends to come into contact with Kure Kirika. Taking Sayaka's dislike of her into account, as well as the desire shared by the four of you to drop your school bags off at your apartment so as to shop unencumbered, you wisely decided to route the group's travel to your apartment, and take the southeast train into Downtown from there.

You take the dress from Sayaka, turning it around in your hands a few times to examine it. "If Madoka picked it out, then I'm sure that I'll like it."

Sayaka was the one who suggested that your group go clothes shopping. You have a sneaking suspicion that her suggestion was largely for her own benefit, seeing as she's picked out the most items of any of you. Mostly boys' clothing, it seems; band shirts and jeans, though "Hey, Hitomi-" there is one feminine article of clothing that Sayaka has sought out. "Can you help me pick out some new bras? I think my old ones are getting a little tight."

Hitomi hesitates, at first saying "But, why me, Sayaka-san? Aren't you able to-" But as an expression of dawning realization spreads across her face, she changes her tune. "Ah, of course I'll help you. Proper support is an important element to any lady's wardrobe, after all."

With a dastardly smile and a naughty look thrown your way, Sayaka grabs Hitomi by the hand and takes off. By the time you've emerged from the changing stall, it's just you and Madoka. Upon seeing you in the attire she's chosen, Madoka's face flushes red, and she fidgets as she says to you "You look really cute in that, Homura-chan. The colours look good on you, and it, um, accentuates your curves really well."

"I, um, I'm glad you decided to come with us today, Homura-chan, and I'm glad you came over last night. I've really missed spending time with you lately."

"I've felt the same way. That's why I decided to come with you today." A few moments of awkward silence follows your words, as you and Madoka can do little more than stare at one another. "I saw a dress that I thought would look good on you, before I went into the changing stall."

There's something nostalgic, you think, watching Madoka step out of the changing room wearing the all-white sundress you picked out for her. Madoka spins in place, allowing you to see what all sides of her look like in pure white, unblemished by the blood-stained fate that awaits to all who form a contract with the Incubator.

"Well, Homura-chan, does it still look good now that I'm wearing it?"

Something right in this world.

"You look beautiful."

Madoka's hands shoot up to her face, and through her desperate attempt to hide her blush from you she manages to stammer out "I think you look the same, Homura-chan."

An arm belonging to a certain blue-haired troublemaker wraps itself around Madoka's shoulder. "You two girls having fun yet, or what?" Sayaka asks, smiling slyly at the two of you. To her side stands Hitomi, silent and stoic.

"Sayaka-chan!" Madoka sqeaks, almost jumping out of her skin at the surprise touch of her friend. "That's not very nice, the way you sneak up on us like that."

"Ah, what can I say, you and Homura just look so cute when you're flustered! Now come here, I need to talk to ya for a second, okay?" Before Madoka has a chance to protest, Sayaka has dragged her off.

It's just you and Hitomi now. "Are you enjoying yourself?" you ask; Hitomi responds with a nod. "Have you found anything that caught your eye?"
"What do you mean, you didn't kiss her?"
"Not particularly, no. My mother took me shopping just the past Sunday, so there's nothing here that I haven't already looked at." Hitomi offers you a smile, adding "Oh, but don't get me wrong. I'm enjoying myself just being here with my friends. You don't need to worry that I'll feel left out if I don't buy anything."
"I'm sorry, Sayaka-chan. The opportunity never came up."
"That's good. I know you said that you've been feeling left out lately, so I'm glad to hear that's not the case today."
"I gave you plenty of time. How are you going to say that the opportunity never came up?"
Hitomi's eyes dart from side to side, scanning to make sure that the nearby aisles are clear before saying "Actually, in regards to the other thing we talked about last night, are you sure that my keeping an open eye will be enough? Last time, I had- Well, I hate to call it my benefit, given how many people we're talking about, but I had the benefit of two dozen missing persons for my sample size. Assuming I let you know when the first person disappears, do you really believe that will be enough?"
"I'm sorry, okay? I know you gave me plenty of time; I just couldn't bring myself to do it."
"I'd like to believe it will be. One of my allies has... A unique ability, that should come in handy even if there's only one person for us to go by."
"Geez, Madoka, you're never going to get there at this rate."
"That's good. This city has been through so much in the past few weeks, and I'm glad to know that my efforts are helpful, even if it's just a small part."

"And, we're back!" Sayaka announces, dragging an embarrassed-looking Madoka along with her. "Sorry that took so long, I just had something I needed to say to Madoka in private." A very obvious wink directed towards Hitomi tells you all that you need to know. Sayaka is up to no good, and you're probably going to be the one on the receiving end of whatever her scheme might be.

Still, you've got your own ways of getting back at her; preemptively, even. "Look at this one," you say to Sayaka, grabbing a perfectly girly dress off the rack and holding it out for her. It's robin's egg blue, with plenty of frills and bows. "I think you'd look perfect in this."

Sayaka balks, Hitomi has to stifle a laugh, and Madoka's face erupts in a brilliant smile. "That's adorable, Homura-chan! Sayaka-chan, you've got to try it on right away!"

The pout on Sayaka's face seems to have become a permanent fixture after you and Madoka all but forced her to try on that girly dress. "Geez, I can't believe you two would do that to me," she grouses, arms crossed over her chest as the four of you browse the aisles of the music store. "And here I thought we were friends, too."

"Oh, lighten up, Sayaka-san, let them have their fun." Hitomi says, thumbing through a stack of CDs. "Personally, I'm just glad to see Akemi-san enjoying herself so much. It's such a far cry from when she first transferred into our class, isn't it?"

"Yeah. I guess that's what falling in love does to ya."

While you can hear what Sayaka and Hitomi are saying, your ears aren't pointed in their direction. Rather, as you stretch a pair of the store's headphones over to Madoka, your ears are pointed towards the latest Kalafina release. "Do you want to listen?" Madoka nods, joining you underneath the headphones, which are now stretched to their maximum in order to accommodate the both of you. Your ears are pressed against one another, and your hands are, too.

When the song ends, some five minutes later, and you both lift off the headphones together, you ask "Did you enjoy that?"

Madoka nods; you're glad. "Well, it's a very different sort of sound than the music I usually listen to, but if Homura-chan likes it then I'm sure it can't be bad."

You hear the sounds of a ruckus brewing as Sayaka forcefully places a CD case back on the shelf. "Stupid idiot," you hear her grumbling. That angry tone is back.

"Sayaka-san, what's wrong? I thought you liked Kitamura Eri."

"I do, but look!" Sayaka picks the CD case back up, shoving it in Hitomi's face. "It's the same stupid song I sang with that idiot when we all went to karaoke together!"

"Ma'am, if you're going to cause a scene, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave." The employee speaks with a calm, professional tone, directing Sayaka towards the exit with an outstretched hand.

"Fine." Sayaka once again places the CD case back on the rack, and storms out of the music store.

And bumps into Mikuni Oriko on her way out.

That's one way to alienate Sayaka. Just give her a lot time to cool down (or until Oriko somehow saves Sayaka in the future).

[X] Beautiful
[X] Telepathically inform Oriko that it'd be best to exfiltrate herself from the situation she's found herself in before being punched, as Sayaka's still quite irritable since she tried to kill her

For a precog Oriko's got some pretty bad luck when it comes to running into view of people who don't like her (first Homura at the mall earlier on in the quest, then Sayaka).

Man, talk about a tough crowd. 12 hours later and we're at 1-1-1-1 to either slap Sayaka, do nothing, invite Oriko along with us, or tell Oriko to scram.

[X] Telepathically inform Oriko that it'd be best to exfiltrate herself from the situation she's found herself in before being punched, as Sayaka's still quite irritable since she tried to kill her

Sayaka storms out of the music store in a poorly-concealed rage, only to collide into Mikuni Oriko on her way out. The two fall to the floor, upon which you hear both parties say "Sorry, I didn't see-" only to stop as they realize who they have bumped into.

Of all the bad times for Mikuni Oriko to make an appearance, right now probably ranks up there in the top three. To say that her appearance here, bumping into an already-irritated Sayaka, is unwelcome would be akin to saying that Archer is adequate in the kitchen. A second "I'm sorry," leaves MIkuni Oriko's lips, this one sounding far more sheepish than before she knew who she had run into. "I'll just be getting out of your way, then."

"So you'll apologize for knocking me over, but not for trying to kill me and my best friend?" Sayaka, despite being shorter than Mikuni Oriko by a fair few centimeters, still does her best to appear intimidating to the girl, standing on her tiptoes in order to appear taller than she really is. "Is that how it is now? Is that what they teach you in magical murderer school?"

For a moment, it looks as though Sayaka might have Mikuni Oriko well and truly beaten with that, but the silence doesn't last for very long. "I... I know how much I owe you an apology for my actions, but in light of their severity, I do not believe that anything I could say to you would be sufficient to make amends."

You can see Sayaka's hand trembling, her fingers curling tight into a balled fist. Now would be a good time for you to intervene, were doing so not likely to see Sayaka's wrath directed towards yourself as well. "I would suggest making yourself scarce for the time being. Sayaka is still quite angry with you and Kure Kirika, and you're liable to be punched if you stick around where she can see you."

"Yes, I understand. I can come back later; it's no big deal."

"If you don't mind me asking, what were you even doing here in the first place? This isn't even the first time you've run into someone who hates you while at the mall; do you just have the worst luck of any precognitive, or what?"

"I had wanted to pick up some CDs that Kirika has been begging me to get her for months, but I can come back some other time if my being here isn't ideal."

[ ] "I'd be willing to get them for you, provided you pay me back later."
[ ] "We shouldn't be much longer. I'd say come back in about ten minutes."
[ ] "That's too bad for her. You'll have to come back when Sayaka isn't around."

"Hey, are you even listening to me?" That's right; Sayaka is still squaring off against Mikuni Oriko, growing closer to raising a hand to her with each passing second. "I said get out of my sight before I send you flying."

"Sayaka-san, calm down," Hitomi steps in, trying her best to calm Sayaka down. "People are starting to stare."

"They should! They should know what she tried to-"

"No, Sayaka-san, I mean people are starting to stare at you."

If life were a movie, you could almost imagine the camera panning away to reveal the crowd of people that have gathered around Sayaka and MIkuni Oriko. But real life isn't a movie and there is no camera, and in truth you've been watching the crowd gather this entire time. Sayaka and Mikuni Oriko both stop, turning their heads to take in the sight of the crowd that has gathered to gawk at them. Mikuni Oriko takes a few steps away from Sayaka, saying "You're right. I... I should be going now." The crowd parts as she turns left, heading off in as far a direction away from Sayaka as she can manage. "Oh, and Miki-san; I know my words mean nothing to you, but I really am sorry for what I tried to do."

The crowd disperses once the standoff is over, and you can hear the people talking under their breath about Sayaka as they vanish into the rest of the mall's patronage. Sayaka stares, "But... But she... She tried to..."

"Sayaka-san, we all understand your frustration." Hitomi's hands are atop Sayaka's shoulders, massaging loose the stress that you can only imagine they have been building up in the course of the day. "We're all here for you, any time you need us to be. But the middle of the mall is no place to vent your frustrations.

"I..." Sayaka sighs as Hitomi's hands work their magic on her shoulders, only now relenting as the magnitude of her colossal stupidity finally dawns on her. "Yeah, you're right. And, I'm sorry for snapping at you in the music store, too. I've just... Been under a lot of stress lately."

"I understand, Sayaka-san."

Chances are that if Homura tells Oriko to come back 10 minutes later while they're still in the Mall, she'll either somehow run into them again or something else will happen, knowing her luck at the Mall. Here's Homura having them go and do something before leaving the Mall to calm down Sayaka enough to call the outing a good one while Homura waits for Archer and Bazett to begin their mission.

We're going to have to be careful in dealing with Sayaka. Any more stress she'll end up a Puella Magi.

Pretty sure that Sayaka is taking the "being useless" thing a lot worse than Madoka is, possibly as a result of a fight she might have had with Kyouko. Maybe we can bring it up in the arcade?

We'll have to vote on it, then, if we want to bring it up to Sayaka.

EDIT: Not that I'm saying we should let it happen, or not; but if Sayaka contracts, then going by eye colour we'll have a magical girl for every colour of the rainbow.

"I'd like these on two separate receipts, please."

You had been in the hospital when Kalafina released their most recent CD, Magia, but a trip to the music store with Madoka, much like this trip you are on now, had been one of the first things you did with her in that first timeline. Subsequent timelines, as you drifted further and further away from her, had seen you feeling less and less inclined to pick it up. This trip marks the first timeline in countless that you have felt inclined to purchase it, but today it isn't the only CD you leave the store with.

You never would have guessed that Kure Kirika was a fan of Mizuki Nana or Iguchi Yuka, but nestled inside your bag are the CDs you said you would pick up in Mikuni Oriko's stead. You hope she is able to appreciate the effort you went through on behalf of her girlfriend.

"Are you feeling better now?" It hasn't yet been ten minutes, but Sayaka is still ready to head elsewhere in light of her earlier altercation.

"Yeah." You join your three friends sitting down on a bench near the food court. "And again, I'm really sorry for how I acted back there. I know it's no excuse for how I acted, but when I saw her there, looking like nothing had happened since that day, I just... I just couldn't take it." Sayaka turns to Hitomi, wrapping her up in a big hug. "I think if you hadn't been watching out for me, Hitomi, that I'd have really done something stupid. Like, stupid enough to get us all thrown out; that kind of stupid."

"Do you want to go home, Sayaka-chan? We won't hold it against you if you do."

"Nah." Sayaka stands, stretching her limbs as she surveys the surrounding sights. It's the same mall food court as always, so you aren't sure what Sayaka could be looking for that she isn't already aware of. "I'd like to actually do something fun today so I can call this trip a success."

"Like where?"

"How about the arcade?" you ask. A part of you wonders, in the back of your mind, whether the arcade is a good idea. A certain redhead with whom Sayaka seems most irritated is known to frequent the arcade, and you don't think her chances are good that she'll be able to avoid conflict twice in one day should it come to that. But yet another part of you feels compelled to suggest the arcade, because "You usually seem to enjoy yourself when we go there."

"Heck yeah!" Sayaka pumps her fist in the air. "I was gonna say we could all catch a movie, but the arcade's just as cool!" Sayaka turns towards you, holding her hands out to catch you and Madoka in a frame made from her thumb and index fingers. A smirk which you've come to associate with trouble forms on her lips, and she says "But we gotta make sure that Madoka and Homura spend some time in the photo booth while we're there."

You wish you could un-see the brilliant red cabbage of Madoka's face. The thought of seeing her like that is liable to stop your heart at a moment's notice.

You wish you could see it again.

The sights and sounds of the arcade, the bright flashing lights and the overbearing din of music and energy that bombard you from every direction, are hardly your preferred form of comfort. But you know that Sayaka will enjoy herself here, and after running into Mikuni Oriko at the music store you want to make sure that Sayaka has something positive to look back on to call this trip a successful and fun outing.

You're sure that you and Madoka can find something to do that will keep you entertained.

"Akemi-san, are you sure that suggesting the arcade was a good idea?" It takes you a moment to realize that Madoka is no longer standing beside you; rather, she's joined with Hitomi in presenting a concerned front. "It doesn't take a genius to see that Sayaka-san is very upset over something that happened between her and Sakura-san, so why did you suggest the arcade?"

"Sayaka-chan has been upset at Kyouko-chan ever since we all hung out at Tomoe-san's apartment that night. Couldn't you tell?"

Sayaka had ran off from the rest of your group the moment that you all arrived, heading towards the racing machines. Had Kyouko been here, it's unlikely that she would have noticed. Fortunately, as you look to the dance machines, you see no sign of the redhead. "Yes, I've noticed that something is bothering her. However, I wanted to suggest something that I knew Sayaka would enjoy, and the odds of her running into two people that she's upset with in one day struck me as being so low as to not be worth worrying about."

Hitomi is silent, but your response is enough to put you back in Madoka's good graces. She's smiling again, and a smiling Madoka is food for your soul. "Well, now that we're here, what do you want to do?"

Yeah, the chance is so low that it's the kind of thing that would only happen in an anime!
Been at a 1-1 for over 24 hours now, just saying we could use some votes from the peanut gallery. @WanderingTwix, my dude, where you been all this time?

Claw machine huh?

Apparently, even being an ex-witch that's been taken away to Magical Girl Valhalla is trippy as fuck. Bare minimum, the plan I suggested for Sayaka to gain magic via an alternate timeline Grief Seed of herself would get her a wicked head trip.

That's also what happens when you lick a Grief Seed. Don't lick Grief Seeds, m'kay? Licking Grief Seeds is bad, m'kay?
