I had to move our convo to Tomoe-san to the next post because I couldn't find a good place to insert it where it wouldn't disrupt the flow.

In the future, let's endeavor to avoid massive amounts of gridlock over one or two small details like this in the future, shall we? Large posts are fine. large posts that are radically different are also fine. But large posts where there's only one thing that's different (or even worse, when they're the same but there's one or two tiny grammatical differences) are a real pain.

Thank you to Akumura for finally breaking our deadlock by giving us our tiebreaking third vote for Church over Walpurgisnacht.

Sorry about that. I actually wanted to use Enetious' edited vote, but seems like I didn't edit my post correctly.

No need to apologize; I thought you had used his vote at first, and it was just that he hadn't voided his old vote that was screwing us up. Come to find out we were both mistaken, but there's no harm done.

Day 20 Chapter 9
[X] Sit here with Sayaka until the bell rings

With a light breeze at your backs, you and Sayaka sit contentedly atop the roof, staring in silence as the city below goes about its day. You don't know how much longer you have until the bell rings and you must return to class; five; ten; perhaps twenty? The passing minutes feel so small and insignificant to you as they come, and yet you know that each passing minute brings you one closer to this city's destruction and your quest is failed once more.

But for now, sitting here in silence with a friend is good enough.

Or, it would be good enough, had you no other business that needed addressing. "Tomoe-san, I need you to apologize to Kure Kirika for me."

"?"

"When you contacted me, I was already engaged to meet with Sayaka. I tried to reach out to Kure Kirika to let her know that I would be unable to meet her, but it appears that her link to Berserker is making telepathy difficult for her. If you could, apologize on my behalf both for failing to meet her, and for trying to contact her, as I don't believe she appreciated my attempt. And, tell her that I'll be able to meet her after school, if she still wants to talk to me."

"I understand... I'm worried about her, Akemi-san. In addition to the mana she has to use to regenerate her legs and the emotional stress she must be under having lost them, controlling Berserker seems to exact a horrific toll on her body and mind. I... For as much evil as she is responsible for, I feel like Mikuni-san and I made a real connection yesterday. She's already hurting enough, having to live with the guilt of what she's done; I can't imagine what losing Kure-san might do to her."

"In all likelihood, the loss of Kure Kirika at this stage would cause Mikuni Oriko to turn into a witch almost immediately."

"... I was afraid of that... Very well, then. I'll let Kure-san know that you wish to apologize and that she can meet you after school."

"Thank you, Tomoe-san."

"Hey Homura, I've got a question I want to ask you, but it's kinda personal." Sayaka speaks up just as you sever your telepathic link with Tomoe-san.

"What would you like to know?"

Sayaka leans forward, scratching at the back of her head as she asks "When did you realize that you liked girls? If you don't want to answer, that's fine; I was just curious, that's all."

Your braids bounce in time to your footsteps as you make the journey home from school, and your unfamiliar school bag weights heavy in your hands. You can still hear the words your classmates spoke about you when they thought you weren't listening. Only one voice manages to rise about the cruel throng echoing inside your head, that of the kindly nurse's aide who cheerfully told you that your name was cool, and who wished to see you become cool enough to match with it.

"I... Can never be cool, can I...?"

"I cause problems for everyone. I'm an embarrassment..."

"Am I always going to be like this...?"

Then it'd be better if you just died, huh?

Maybe that's right...

WHY DON'T YOU JUST DIE...?

Death is the best thing for you...

Before you knew what had happened, your suicidal thoughts had transformed into a sprawling abyss, a chaotic aberration where time seemed to stand still, and the city melted away to reveal an art-deco hellscape. Jumping from a bridge, perhaps, or the top of a building; that's how you imagined your death would be. Never could you have imagined a death like this. "... Eh? What? Where am I?"

Figures circle all around you, things painted in the shape of humans, mumbling words in a language you cannot understand. But as soon as they appear, they vanish in a flash of gold and pink, and as you stare in shock at what you've just seen, you hear a voice saying "I'd say we're just in the nick of time."

"You're okay now, Homura-chan!" Another voice, more cheerful this time; a voice you are familiar with.

"Ah... You're..."

"These are puella magi," says a third voice, coming, despite all logical evidence to the contrary, from the bushy-tailed white cat standing in front of you. "Their job is to hunt witches."

"My cover's blown right off the bat, huh?" Kaname-san says, glancing back in your direction with a smile. "Keep it a secret from the rest of our class, okay?"

"Here we go, Kaname-san!" the blonde calls, as a gigantic cannon decorated with silver filigree forms in her hands.

"Right!" Likewise, a bow of rosewood forms in the hands of Kaname-san.

As you watch on as Kaname-san and the blonde girl work together to destroy the... What had they called it? The witch? You feel something stir within you. It isn't the familiar sensation of your heart, moments before another attack, but something else; something... Different. Kaname-san's smile has done something to you; made you feel something you haven't felt in so long, not since your father died.

It made you feel as though you mattered to someone.

"It's cliche, but I guess you'd call it love at first sight," you say to Sayaka. "From the moment that she smiled at me, I knew it had to be love. And when that feeling kept coming back, but only for girls-" only for one girl "-then it was easy enough for me to figure out that I was a lesbian."

Your response has piqued Sayaka's interest; a foolish and amateur mistake on your part, one you'll be sure not to repeat in her presence. "Oh, what's this?" she asks, sliding up closer to you, a devious grin plastered all over her face. "You didn't tell me there were other girls before Madoka. Come on, tell me all about it."

"I'd rather not," you reply. "Besides, there's nothing to tell you anyway. None of my previous relationships ever lasted for more than a month."

How it breaks your heart to have to say those words.

"Fine, fine; geez, I was just joking," says Sayaka, pouting as she pulls away from you. "But Madoka's not going to be like that, you hear me? I can already tell; you and her are going to be together for a really long time."

If you only knew, Sayaka.

"Akemi-san, I've relayed your message to Kure-san. While she was understandably a little upset over your inability to meet with her, she says she'll still be able to speak with you after class. Come by room 3-A when the last bell rings; we'll both we waiting for you there."

"Understood. Thank you, Tomoe-san."

You hear the bell ring; lunch is over. "We should head back to class now," you say to Sayaka.

Is this supposed to be first timeline moemura finding out about puella magi and the spark of her love for madoka?

[X] Go to class. Meet with Kirika after school and inform Madoka about the meeting beforehand. Apologize to Madoka explaining that both Sayaka and Kirika wanted to meet at the exact same time for whatever reason, and you had to push Kirika's meeting to after school.

Okay, either that was a rather exacerbated case of PTSD or some Angra Mainyu shenanigans are abound. Also no need to make Madoka think Homura is purposely neglecting her.

EDIT: Homura is no longer "saying explaining" to Madoka

That's the other confusing thing, because it abruptly segues into the flashback, so at first I couldn't tell if that was current homura having panic attack or moemura having a panic attack

You and Sayaka trudge back to class as the bell sounds. Sayaka goes on ahead of you, but you wait in the hall until a familiar shock of pink can be seen among the crowded hallway. You wave, and Madoka responds with a cheerful cry of "Homura-chan!" as she cuts through the crowd to greet you. "Were you able to help Sayaka-chan at all?"

You nod, saying "Yes, she's feeling much better now."

"I'm so glad."

You try your best to smile, despite knowing that this small respite would probably be the last time you have to see Madoka today, courtesy of other official businesses. "Listen, Madoka, I..." How can you make her see that you aren't avoiding her? "I'm sorry that we haven't been able to spend much time together. Saying that things have been hectic is probably an understatement. Even today, it just seems like things keep piling up on me. Between Sayaka needing to vent to me, and Kure Kirika also requesting to speak with me at the same time - actually, I had to reschedule my meeting with her for the end of the day - I wasn't able to join you for lunch, and I don't think I'll be able to join you walking home, either. I'm not trying to avoid you, but I-"

"It's okay Homura-chan; really, I understand." Though the pout on her face might tell you otherwise, from Madoka's tone you can infer that this time, she really does mean it when she says that she understands. "We can find time to spend together when you aren't so busy."

"Thank you, Madoka, for understanding."

"Ah!" Suddenly, an idea comes to your girlfriend. Her hands work quickly, removing both your hairband and the ribbons in her hair, and switching their places before you can even realize what she's done. "There! Like this, we can still be together, even if we can't see each other!"

The black of your hairband, you regret to say, is not the most appealing colour that Madoka could have chosen to decorate her hair with, but you cannot deny that she looks quite attractive all the same with her hair down. In comparison, you think as you catch a glimpse of your reflection in the glass wall of your classroom, Madoka's ribbons sit comfortably at home in your raven locks. You smile as you gently touch your fingers to the bow into which Madoka has tied her ribbons.

Madoka returns your smile, saying "It looks really cute on you, Homura-chan! And, um... I know I wasn't able to give you one before, but if you'd like, you can think of them as a late birthday present."

"Thank you, Madoka. I'll be sure to treasure them, always." You see the teacher for next period approaching the classroom, and with all haste you and Madoka hurry to your desks, the smiles on your faces never once fading.

The last bell rings, and your class is abuzz with the sound of your classmates as they ready themselves to depart, for home or for their club activities. "Hey, Akemi," says Mochizumi-san, gently tapping you on the shoulder as she throws the last of her things into the bag. "Don't forget, tomorrow's our first meeting. Kasuga-san said he wasn't able to get a fifth bow for you in time, so if you've got one of your own, feel free to bring it, okay?"

"Right. Thank you for informing me." This is good news for you; it means you can continue to practice with the same bow you will be using in combat.

One by one your classmates file out, and among them each of your friends departs from you in their own way; a warm hug from Madoka, a high-five from Sayaka, and a polite wave from Hitomi. Soon, just as it was at lunch, you are the last one to leave, heading not for home or a club area, but to class 3-A.

"Took you long enough," Kure Kirika says as you enter the classroom. She is seated at a desk which you presume to be hers, with her wheelchair tucked away in the far corner. Tomoe-san, who is standing next to her, is looking none too pleased by her opening line, but says nothing that would indicate her displeasure.

"Kure Kirika, you wished to speak with me, correct?"

Kure Kirika glares at you. "I'll come right out and say it, then. Me being back here at school, your friends still being mad at me, all that jazz; is that going to be a problem for you? I don't really care about them, but Oriko... She told me to do my best to play nice with you and your friends while we're at school, and I don't really want to have to tell her that's not possible if me being here is just going to cause problems."

"I've never failed her before, and I can't afford to start now, so just tell me what I have to do to make sure that doesn't happen! Otherwise..." Her glare breaks, and for a brief moment you catch a glimpse of the person Kure Kirika is underneath before she turns her head away from you. "... Otherwise, she might hate me."

[ ] What do you say to Kure Kirika?

This is really awkward, having to toe the line between giving a satisfying answer to kirika while not contradicting what we just said to sayaka.

[x] "That's actually why I couldn't talk to you earlier. One of my friends was very upset about you and I was trying to calm her down. I don't know if they'll ever be fully okay with you, and I think Oriko knows that. She didn't ask you to become best friends us, she asked you to do your best. As long as you honestly try, I don't think she'll be mad at you. Especially, if if she loves you even half as much as you seem to love her."

Well, as long as Kirika doesn't antagonize anyone or specifically mocks Sayaka she should be fine. Madoka and Mami are all for rehabilitation, Sayaka should be more willing to ignore her now, and I'm not sure if Hitomi is even aware of them fully (don't recall if Homura told Hitomi about them).

EDIT: Copied Nachtigall's iteration to remove typos.

@Enetious, err, that's the exact same vote as before including the typoes?

Edit: I apparently mixed up NMS and Enetious due to their similar profile pic colors, sorry.

Hitomi is vaguely aware of who they are, but not what they are, and really only knows that they're a formerly rival faction who are more or less under house arrest pending the possibility of rehabilitation.

Would she take that last part about "seem to love her" badly?

"... Otherwise, she might hate me."

You can honestly say that you were not expecting to hear those words ever come out of Kure Kirika's mouth. Even Tomoe-san, who has known the pair for far shorter a span of time than you have, is visibly shocked to hear those words. "Kure-san! What on earth makes you think that Mikuni-san could ever hate you?"

"Because... I only exist to be useful to Oriko! If I can't do what she needs me to do, then she won't have any reason to love me anymore!"

Tomoe-san looks to you, and asks "Do you want to take this, Akemi-san? I'm afraid I'm not as well-versed in matters of the heart as you are, so perhaps you might be able to soothe Kure-san's nerves where I cannot."

"Right."
You sigh, taking a seat at the desk to Kure Kirika's right. "I thought I had managed to talk this childish notion out of you yesterday, but it appears I was wrong. Love has nothing to do with whether or not you're useful to the person, and I don't know what could have put that idea into your head in the first place." Kure Kirika glares at you as the word "childish" exits your mouth, but you pay it no mind; she's not much of a threat to you in her current state. "Besides, you don't really believe that Mikuni Oriko would come to hate you, do you?"

"I... I don't know. I've never failed her before, but with how much of a problem me being here is for you and your friends, I'm worried that I might fail her this time. I don't know how she'll react if I fail her, and I'm worried that it might make her hate me if I can't do what she asks of me."

"I'm glad to hear that this is bothering you," you say, to the surprise of both Tomoe-san and Kure Kirika. "It shows me that, despite your bluster, you really do care about trying to improve yourself. And, this issue is actually why I couldn't talk to you earlier. One of my friends was very upset over seeing you again, and I was trying to calm her down. I don't know if they'll ever be fully okay with having you around, and I think that Mikuni Oriko knows it. What did she tell you that your mission here at school was, in her exact words?"

"I already told you exactly what she said to me. She told me to do my best to play nice with you and your friends while we're at school"

"There, see? She didn't ask you to become best friends with us, she asked you to do your best. As long as you honestly try, I don't think she'll be mad at you, especially if she loves you even half as much as you seem to love her."

"I do love her!" Kure Kirika slams her hands down against her desk and forces herself up using just the strength in her arms, her cast-bound "legs" dangling ineffectively beneath her. "It's not 'seems' at all! It's the real thing!"

"Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about."

Kure Kirika calms herself, and lowers her body back into a seated position. With an irritated look on her face, she fidgets in her seat as she tries to avoid your gaze, saying "... We don't really have anyone else. My mom's always working, two, sometimes three shifts ever since the divorce; and the only family Oriko's got left is her creepy uncle... Maybe some cousins in Italy on her mom's side, but she never hears from any of them. We're all we've got, and I couldn't bare it if she ever hated me." With a sneer and an annoyed "hmph!" Kure Kirika feels the need to childishly add "And just why am I telling you all this in the first place? Geez, what's wrong with me?"

"Nothing's wrong with you, Kure-san," Tomoe-san says, as she offers a comforting hand to her shoulder. "It's perfectly normal to be concerned about what the person you love is thinking." Tomoe-san looks to you, as if to gain assurance that her position is correct, and you respond with a nod of your head. "Now, Akemi-san, I recall you saying last night that the five of us should meet after school to discuss our plans to deal with the Church going forward. Would it be better if I told Mikuni-san to get on the train and meet us at my apartment; or if we picked up Sakura-san from my apartment and then took the train up to Mikuni-san's place?"
