It was getting difficult for me to come up with things to say that fell in line with the vote, so I'm stopping here. I'm looking for more conversation topics for when we go over to Oriko's place, as well as an answer to my earlier question-
---[X] How'd her dinner with Caren go? You would hope that it at least left off on a positive note.
Since we only saw the sliver of the dinner conversation that was voted on, ... What do you think Oriko's response would be to us asking that question?

Well, I certainly think you did a great job on the conversation topics this time around despite the lack of prompting. I was afraid that we all ran out of material over the past real life years of daily interactions. :)

Oriko's probably kind of confused at the end of things, yet much more curious about how Caren acts (making her feel bad but in the same sentence offering help) even if she was at first saddened by Caren's behavior towards her. It would have more than likely have been quite the learning experience, regardless. Depending on the time-zone, in-between the time in which Caren leaves and Homura arrives she might have already called one of her relatives in Italy.

EDIT:
[] Plan What A Charmer
-[] After you get to Oriko's and start working on those protective charms
--[] ask her how her dinner with Caren went
---[] and about how she thinks her relatives in Italy are like
--[] reassure her that they stand a good chance against Walpurgisnacht this time around, especially with all of the firepower that their Servants are packing in the form of Noble Phantasms (Archer especially)
--[] talk about about today's training session and Witch hunt
--[] about the exact functions of the charms they'll be making
-[] After everything is said and done, get what sleep you can - if any - before doing preparations to go to school

Last time they talked about Walpurgisnacht, Oriko had just gotten handily defeated and was doubting that Homura's way was the way to go when it came to Walpurgisnacht. Y'know, speaking of, I wonder if they could do anything with all the Soul Gems Oriko had collected? Perhaps after Walpurgisnacht they could work towards some solution of preparing replacement bodies for the innocent Puella Magi Oriko and Kirika slaughtered? 🤔

Japan is 8 hours ahead of Italy, so if we assume that it's 8 at the earliest, if Oriko calls one of the numbers Caren gave he she might be interrupting them during lunch. If it's later, then it would depend on how much later it was when she called. What the rest of the family does for a living will also depend on if they can pick up as well. All things considered, Oriko has a fairly large window in which she can call them. She could, in theory, call them at 4 in the morning her time, and be able to catch someone as they're finishing dinner; or call them after breakfast in order to say goodnight; etc...

Perhaps after Walpurgisnacht they could work towards some solution of preparing replacement bodies for the innocent Puella Magi Oriko and Kirika slaughtered?

I don't foresee that ending well.

Leaving out the Wally discussion, because, well... Is Homura confidant in their odds of surviving, let alone winning, the fight?

It won't. First, as part of the process by which she obtained her extra Command Seals, Oriko had to strip the soul from the Soul Gem. In order to get the soul back, we'd need to enlist the help of an itako (good luck, there's only 20 left in the entire profession) or a necromancer (do we really want to trust one of them?) or someone else who can communicate with the dead (do we even know anyone who can do this?) to recall the soul from magical girl yuri heaven/the Root/Lancer's digestive track/wherever it ended up after Oriko fed it to Lancer to power her up;
Second, we'd need a body. Now, we do happen to have, by way of Bazett, a line to an exellent doll-maker who could help us out in this regard, but then we still run headlong into;
Third, the dismembered remains of the girls have already been cremated, their losses mourned, and their families moved on. If we brought them back to life, I can't imagine we'd succeed in doing anything but upsetting an order that doesn't need to be upset. Maybe the families would be happy to see their deceased daughters again, maybe they would shun them for having come back from the dead and think they were cursed; who knows.

I was thinking more "What do you think is going to happen when you resurrect a bunch of people you and your lover violently murdered?"

Day 45 Chapter 9
[x] Plan: Mostly a Charmer

"You ought to be rejoicing, cousin." Spoken by Nurse Ortensia to Mikuni Oriko as the former puts her shoes on, these are the first words you hear as the front door of the Mikuni mansion is opened for you. "The wish in your heart will at last come true." Said, as if announcing an oracle, Nurse Ortensia's words are accompanied by a chill-inducing smirk. Her shoes on, Nurse Ortensia passes you on her way out the door, saying to you "Your friend there is quite the sinner. I'd be careful around her if I were you."

"I'll keep that in mind," you say, trying your best to ignore the chill in the air as Nurse Ortensia passes you her her way out. As soon as the door is shut behind you and any chance of Nurse Ortensia hearing you is - hopefully - dashed, you ask "What was that about?"

"Over dinner, I confided in Caren-san how I've long wished for the chance to get to know my grandmother's family," Mikuni Oriko says, her face giving you no indication of how dinner might have gone. "Caren-san was kind enough to give me the phone numbers for her aunt and grandmother."

"That's good, isn't it?"

Mikuni Oriko nods. "It is, but... Well, there's something about Caren-san I don't quite understand, and it's bothering me." Changing gears for but a moment, your host asks you "Living room or dining room?"

"Whichever you prefer," you respond. "Either is fine." When Mikuni Oriko leads you to the living room table - you can see as you pass through the mansion's main hall that the dining room still has the empty dishes lain out. It must be strange for Mikuni Oriko, going back to doing everything herself now that Lancer is busy - you ask her "What's bothering you about Nurse Ortensia?"

"Well it's... I'm not really sure how to explain it." Mikuni Oriko runs a hand through her long locks as she tries to find the right words. "But, it's almost as if she's not entirely in control of the things she says. All throughout dinner she was, frankly, quite cruel with her choice of words at times, but despite that her actions were never anything but kind and helpful. She gave me phone numbers for her aunt and grandmother, she allowed me to confess my sins to her and agreed to lead me through the sacraments of initiation, she gave me her address in case I ever needed anything... She even tried to warn me away from getting involved with her side of the Church, rather than trying to recruit me." Mikuni Oriko shakes her head, adding "All this, while still being unimaginably cruel with her choice of words. I don't really understand her, Akemi-san; but she's family, and I would like to learn more about her, and why she is that way."

"It sounds like you had an... Interesting time," you say. You aren't sure that you should ask Mikuni Oriko whether she liked the dinner she had with her cousin, as it doesn't sound as though she knows if she enjoyed herself or not, so instead you ask "Well, now that you have a way to get in touch with them, what do you think the rest of your relatives in Italy will be like?"

"I wouldn't know," Mikuni Oriko replies. "I should hope that Caren-san is the only one like her; I would be greatly saddened if the rest of her family were like that. But, even if they are, I still want to get to know them." A smile graces Mikuni Oriko's lips, not unlike the ones you see when she's thinking of Kirika. "When I was a little girl, I always loved the stories my grandmother would tell me about her childhood in Italy. The scent of summer nights, the sound of her sister's laughter, the family villa overlooking the lush Italian countryside..." Mikuni Oriko makes a soft "Oh" sound to herself. "I'd love to go and visit them, to get to know them and be a part of their lives, and to see my grandmother's childhood home for myself."

"The wish in your heart will at last come true," you say, repeating Nurse Ortensia's words to yourself. Hearing what Mikuni Oriko has said, they no longer sound quite as ominous. "Assuming everyone survives Sunday." "It sounds like your grandmother loved Italy quite a lot; did she ever say why she left, then?"

"My maternal grandfather was a Japanese businessman working in Italy when he and my grandmother fell in love," Mikuni Oriko says. "When his company asked him to return to Japan, he proposed and asked if grandmother would go with him. She was torn, but in the end she agreed to go with him to Japan. She said her sister was better suited to taking over the family business than she was, so by leaving she was giving her sister the chance to do that."

You nod. You wouldn't mind hearing more from Mikuni Oriko about her family when the time permits, but for right now, "Shall we get down to business, then?"

"Yes, of course. These charms aren't going to finish themselves." Mikuni Oriko stands, excusing herself as she says "I'll just be a moment, Akemi-san." Your host exists the living room, and you wait for a minute or two before Mikuni Oriko returns, carrying an spiral-bound notebook and a ziplock bag full of silver rings, both of which she lays out on the table before you. Opening the bag, she removes each of the rings - six in total, laying them out in a row as she opens the notebook to a page somewhere in the middle. "I've been keeping track of my various discoveries about magecraft and the nature of our own magic system in this notebook," she says, passing the notebook over to you. "You can take a look if you'd like."

You take the notebook in your hands, flipping through its pages. It has everything. Notes Mikuni Oriko had made about the mechanics of summoning servants, dating all the way back to February; notes about Lancer's runes, Bounded Fields, and the applications of Othala; detailed findings from her experiments on the Soul Gems of her victims including a step-by-step procedural instruction for how to strip Command Seals from a Soul Gem. You quickly skip over that chapter of Mikuni Oriko's life, until you come to her notes about charms and Mystic Codes. There are detailed notes about the anti-Incubator charms she and Lancer made for Madoka, along with notes scrawled in the margins brainstorming ways to improve them; ah, here it is!

"This is... Impressive," you say to Mikuni Oriko as you set her notebook down. "I wasn't aware that you'd been so diligent in documenting your research." Outside of some practice sheets from before you figured out how to invoke Isa using water in the air, you haven't made any notes at all about your own progress.

"Documenting my work allows me to look back on it after the fact, to see if I can learn anything new by coming back and looking at it again when I'm no longer in the moment."

"Now, regarding the protective charms I asked you about," you say, gesturing to the six rings Mikuni Oriko has lain out. "I saw that you've made some progress already. Can you tell me how far you've gotten?"

"Most of the way, I think," Mikuni Oriko responds. She picks up one of the rings, and slides it onto her finger over her Soul Gem. "These rings have a few different protective charms inscribed in them, and are designed to fit over our Soul Gems, like so. When activated-" Emerald light envelopes her finger, as Mikuni Oriko's Soul Gem changes from ring to egg. Now, the silver ring which had fit over the ring of her Soul Gem forms a band which clamps onto the base of the Soul Gem egg. "-the ring expands, forming a tight seal around the base of our transformed Soul Gems. From there, the protective wards do their job."

"It doesn't sound like you really need my help at all," you say, admiring the work Mikuni Oriko has already put into her charms.

"Well, actually, there is still something I could use another talented mind for," Mikuni Oriko says. "You see, while my rings work just fine when going from ring to egg, I still haven't figured out how to make the jump from ring to body gem, and if I can't do that..."

"... Then there's not much your charms can do to protect our Soul Gems in combat," you say, finishing Mikuni Oriko's sentence.

"Exactly. But maybe a second pair of eyes will spot something that I haven't been able to see."

Kotomine genes alert! Yorokobe itoko, indeed. :V

[X] Plan Nest Egg
-[X] have any suggestions?
--[X] The only way that'll work is if the rings transmute more than simply resizing them when transforming in their magical girl forms (such as personalized metallic "shields" or bands that cover a specific Puella Magi's Soul Gem, like a band wrapping around your hand which happens to be where your Soul Gem is), or perhaps by having something that'll allow them to stick to the gems rather than wrapping around them.
---[X] There's always the possibility of just keeping their Soul Gems in egg form while transformed, which is definitely a thing that they can do. They'd need some reliable way to make sure that it stays with them, though, such as by keeping them on a necklace or something like that.
----[X] Actually you know what, call Archer to see if he can't lend you two a hand when it comes to the Alteration part of the rings
-[X] Just spend your time working until you finish things up, and get what sleep you can before school tomorrow

... Why did you have to make them rings, Oriko? You can't exactly resize them to allow them to protect gems when transformed, after all. It'd take a full fledged transmutation of the base shape in order to do that, and that may interfere with her protective runes that are inscribed on the rings. x.x

Also yeah, they can turn their Soul Gems into egg form even while transformed as shown in the original anime/movies.

I couldn't not have at least one YOROKOBE SHOUNEN moment in this PMMM/Fate crossover, now could I?

But then they have not lose it, which is harder than if it's attached to their body. Necklace is possible, but the charms are only protecting the Soul Gem, so if something hits the necklace and snaps the cord, that person might be screwed.

I don't really see any other option, personally. I was hoping that Oriko would have made the charms less restrictive as she had, but she ended up already doing it. It would probably take way too much time to redo all of her work, so they're kind of stuck working with what Oriko's got.

Here's an idea, make the rings large enough to be bracelets and have the Soul Gems wrapped protectively around by the band so that it's held in place, or have a slot to keep it in. :V

You know, you saying this has got me thinking- Are there any important Fate-isms that I've missed? I've done "People die when they are killed" and "The Archer class is really made of archers" and even had a bonus appearance of "This city really looks like a city" from the Extra anime. I know I've had Gil call someone a mongrel at least once before, and now Caren's spouting off YOROKBEs; so is there anything important that I've missed?

What about Shirou's "Just because you're correct, doesn't mean you're right!"? Or being Lancer (or a Lancer's Master) is suffering? Or "you dodged my undodgeable blow" style meme? 🤔

I may have used the first one; I can't remember. Bryn isn't really suffering, any more than she normally does, so I don't know how appropriate that one is. Oriko has certainly suffered quite a lot though, but I don't know if I could work that in in a serious capacity. The last one, I don't think we have any undodgeable attacks, so it wouldn't even apply.

Day 45 Chapter 10
[X] Plan Nest Egg

"You see, while my rings work just fine when going from ring to egg, I still haven't figured out how to make the jump from ring to body gem, and if I can't do that..."

"... Then there's not much your charms can do to protect our Soul Gems in combat," you say, finishing Mikuni Oriko's sentence.

Mikuni Oriko nods. "Exactly. But maybe a second pair of eyes will spot something that I haven't been able to see."

You stare at the material lain out before you; the rings, and the notebook containing all of Mikuni Oriko's findings. You pick up one of the rings, turning it over in your hand as you carefully pour over the notes left for you. Back and forth your eyes flit, from ring, to notebook, and back to ring again as you try to think of some way to salvage the work already put into these protective charms.

Why did they have to be rings? you ask yourself. Based on what you're seeing, the best way to salvage Mikuni Oriko's work - because there's no way you could feasibly start over at this point - would be to change the rings into another shape entirely, or do something to them to make them change their shape to correspond to the contours of the Soul Gem they're protecting. Except, you aren't sure if you'd be disrupting the protective runes by forcing the rings to change shape so drastically. You shake your head; that wouldn't work, you think to yourself.

"Did you think of something?"

"Maybe," you reply. "The best thing would be if we could make these rings change shape to fit out Soul Gems when we're transformed, but I don't know what that would do to the protective runes you already have in place. Maybe if the rings could be expanded, so that instead of clamping onto out Soul Gems they instead clamp our Soul Gems onto ourselves..."

"Perhaps we could wear our Soul Gems as necklaces, or something similar?" Mikuni Oriko asks. "That way, even if we're unable to figure out how to move my charms from ring to body gem, we'll still have the protection afforded by the work I've already done."

"But if we take a hit that causes us to lose that necklace, that Soul Gem could go flying, and whichever of us lost it wouldn't be able to break away from the battle to go searching for it. If it turns out wrong, we could be in serious trouble because of that." Mikuni Oriko nods her head solemnly, and you return to looking through her notes for anything that might help you. The work she's done regarding the nature of souls and the puella magi system is extensive, and if she were a proper mage you can imagine this sort of thing would make waves in the magical community; except Mikuni Oriko isn't a mage. She has a clear talent for what she's done, even if some of it is horribly unsavoury, but she's only been at this for a few months.

No, what you need right now is the help of an actual mage. You need someone who can look at what Mikuni Oriko has already accomplished, and find a way to salvage her work within the time you have left. You need Archer.

"Do you think you could join me at the Mikuni mansion?"
you ask your father. "We're working on something, and we could use an actual mage helping us out."

"Alright. Just give me a few minutes and I'll be there."

"Thank you."
You close the line to your father, and say to Mikuni Oriko "I hope it's alright with you, but I've asked Archer to come over to help us out. I thought he'd be more useful than I am right now."

"Of course," Mikuni Oriko responds. It doesn't take her very long before she stands, saying "Ah, there he is," as she excuses herself to the front door. Outside the livign room, you can hear her voice saying "Archer, so good to see you. Please, come in; Akemi-san is waiting for you."

Your host leads Archer into the living room, and he says "Hi," as your eyes meet. "Bet you weren't expecting me to come in through the front door, were you?"

"It is a bit too normal for you, I suppose," you respond. Archer takes a seat next to you at the living room table, and you pass him Mikuni Oriko's notebook along with one of the rings she's been working on, and you ask him "So, what do you make of this?" as he thumbs through her notes.

"Impressive," Archer responds. "Some of it's a little dark, but on the whole it's still an impressive treatise on the inner workings of the magic system you girls have got going in this city." It's also probably the only treatise on the puella magi system, at least that you're aware of. "Now, as for these rings..." Archer sets the notebook down, exchanging it for a ring, which he turns over in his hands much the same way you did before. "We can do two of them tonight, but the other four are going to have to wait."

"Why is that?" Mikuni Oriko asks.

"Because what I'm going to do is apply some basic Alteration to these rings to allow them to change shape when you girls transform. But the way I'm going to have to do it requires me to apply custom Alteration schemes to fit each of your Soul Gems."

"You can do that? But earlier, Akemi-san thought doing that might get in the way of the protective runes I've inscribed."

"That might have been the case if a pair of amateurs tried their hand at it." Make that just a single amateur, you think to yourself as you're reminded how your Origin prevents you from using Alteration magecraft. "But you're looking at a genuine fake mage; a bit of Alteration won't be too difficult for me."

Mikuni Oriko eyes Archer, asking him "Are you sure we can trust you, when you're selling yourself as a fake mage?"

"Better an honest faker who tells you that he's a faker, than one who tries to sell himself as genuine." Both you and Mikuni Oriko need a moment to wrap your heads around Archer's logic twister, but before you're able to figure out what he said, he's changed gears and is asking "Now, would the two of you mind transforming for me, so I can see what I'm working with?"

Violet and silver light envelops the Mikuni living room as you and your host transform into your battle costumes. Archer stands over the two of you, cupping a hand to his chin as he eyes your Soul Gems. "Alright, I should be able to do this," he says, reaching for the first ring. "Do you girls mind if I do Mikuni's first? She's got an easier design to work with."

"Sure."

"If you wish, Archer," Mikuni Oriko says, unclasping her Soul Gem from its place on her chest, handing it over to Archer. "I do hope you'll take good care of me."

"You've got nothing to fear," Archer says, as he lays Mikuni Oriko's Soul Gem down on the living room table. "Alteration is so basic I'd have to be an idiot to mess this up." You and Mikuni Oriko watch Archer at work as he tinkers with the ring for several minutes until, his work completed, he hands Mikuni Oriko her Soul Gem, saying "Well? give it a try."

Mikuni Oriko stares at Archer's handiwork as she turns her Soul Gem over in her hands. The plain brass band framing the emerald gemstone is now a shiny silver, adorned with the same protective runes as the ring, which is now nowhere to be seen. "Well, even if it doesn't work, it's certainly pretty to look at," Mikuni Oriko says. A moment passes, and she returns to her normal clothes. Your eyes and hers meet atop her left middle finger; the ring Mikuni Oriko had been working on is right there on top of her Soul Gem ring, just as it had been for her earlier demonstration to you. She tries again, changing into her battle costume once more; the silver band encircling her emerald Soul Gem remains.

"Satisfied?"

"Quite," Mikuni Oriko responds. "Akemi-san, it's your turn."

You nod, saying nothing as you remove your Soul Gem from the back of your left hand and give it to Archer. "Yours is going to be a bit harder to do," Archer says. "Since the frame around yours isn't circular, and there's more going on than on Mikuni's." You nod, and Archer diligently returns to his work, tinkering away over your Soul Gem until his Alterations are complete, and he hands your Soul Gem back to you. Archer's work is immaculate; the four points of the brass diamond framing your violet Soul Gem are the same shiny silver as the band framing Mikuni Oriko's Soul Gem; and not just the corners, either. Archer enclosed the entire Soul Gem in a frame of silver, and even did the twin tines at the bottom that rest on your wrist.

Just as Mikuni Oriko did, you out Archer's Alterations to the test, changing out of and into your battle costume several times to make sure that his work is solid. "It's a shame we couldn't do the others tonight as well," you say. "But what we have is a good start, and we can do the others tomorrow night."

Mikuni Oriko nods her head, and the two of you, satisfied with Archer's handiwork, change out of your battle costumes for the last time. "Will you be staying the night again, Akemi-san?" she asks. "I wouldn't mind the company if you said you wanted to."

You are forced to reject Mikuni Oriko's offer. "Sorry," you say. "But I think I'd prefer to sleep in my own bed tonight. I'll see you tomorrow night, and I'm sure we'll all be staying the night at Tomoe-san's apartment then."

"Of course," Mikuni Oriko says, seeing you and Archer off and into the night. "Good night, Akemi-san. I'll see you tomorrow."

Just one day left now. The usual end-of-day stuff is now appreciated; relationship changes, what we want to see from tomorrow morning, the works.
