As you squint off into the distance to survey the labyrinth again, you notice something strange about one of the chains of balls. It's moving. Actually, it's moving at an accelerated pace; and it's heading right for you.
Oh. So that's where the sound of train cars is coming from.
"Look alive, everyone," you say, forming your bow in your hands as the familiar crashes towards your team. You take the familiar out with a flurry of ice arrows; or, if you didn't manage to take the familiar out, you at least managed to stop its advance. Unfortunately, this being a sandbox, you're expecting neither familiar nor witch to go down so easily. True to form, as soon as the familiar you've dispatched breaks apart into sand, several move spring up to continue the advance. "We've got company."
"What's the plan?"
"Tomoe-san and I will dispatch the familiars before they get too close," you say. In a flash, you and Tomoe-san have done just that, halting the advance for a few seconds longer, before more familiars invariably spring to life again. "For how well that'll work here, I can't say, but we can at least stop them from advancing even if we can't bring them down."
"Yeah, question," Kyouko says. "If this stuff is sand, why don't we just, I dunno, turn it all ta glass?"
"An excellent idea," you reply. "If you see something, turn it to glass." You turn to Nagatsuki Miyuki and say "The same applies to you."
"Sakura-san will take the offensive, while Nagatsuki-san will hang back with Akemi-san and I and play defensive."
"Man, why do I always gotta do the hard stuff?" Kyouko grumbles to herself; but despite her complaints, she charges into the center of the desert, hacking and slashing away at whatever familiars come within reach of her spear. Most of the time, it isn't enough- Her spear cuts deep into the familiars nearest her, but the tip of her spear passes through its body as if it were passing through sand, and the weapon leaves no mark upon exiting the familiar's chest cavity. "Alright, fuck you!" Kyouko shots as her attacks fail in rapid succession. "Take this!"
Her fingers trace the jagged S-shape of the Sowilo rune, and the familiar is engulfed in a column of flame. Is Kyouko's Sowilo strong enough to turn sand to glass? No. The flames peel back as Kyouko thrusts her spear into the heart of the inferno, but where you had hoped to see a glass sculpture shattering under the thrust of her spear, you are instead greeted by the sight of the familiar, the same as it was before.
Beside you, you can hear the sound of Tomoe-san's muskets firing; it's too bad that everything is made of sand in this labyrinth, or she might be managing more than she currently is. So far, you and Nagatsuki Miyuki have had to do most of the work at the rear, softening her targets as much as possible. Ffreezing them doesn't work; at least not by itself, but you and Nagatsuki Miyuki have hit on a combination that at least seems to work. In two waves you unleash a flurry of arrows, one after the other. In tanndem with the first wave, Nagatsuki Miyuki unleashes fire from her pistol. As with Kyouko's Sowilo, her flames are not hot enough to turn the familiars to glass; but combined with the first volley of your ice arrows your attacks seed the sand with enough liquid water that your second volley is able to freeze the familiars solid; once frozen, Tomoe-san is able to dispatch them with ease.
"Alright, fuck this," Kyouko calls out, pulling back from her aggressive position at the front. "I ain't getting nowhere doing this shit, and I ain't gunna put myself out there if I'm just wasting my strength."
"Welcome to the rear," you say, lining up another volley of arrows which you unleash on the wet sand, to awful consequences for any familiars caught in your attack. "If you can lend additional fire support, Nagatsuki Miyuki and II can make this go a little bit quicker."
"I'd rather welcome myself ta Blueberry's rear," Kyouko says, earning her a disapproving stare from Tomoe-san. "But whatever-" Kyouko quickly changes course. "Sure, I can offer ya some extra firepower."
Having enlisted Kyouko's support at the rear, fire and ice rains down on the familiars. It's not a perfect strategy; you'd have preferred using the intense heat of Kyouko's Sowilo to turn the sand to glass, but this will have to do. The number of familiars is dwindling, the ever-present clatter of train cars fading as the herd is thinned, and victory seems near. "We're almost done here, so the witch should be appearing shortly," you say. "It's possible the witch is hiding in the sand, so we should be on our guard."
But of course, now that you say so, the witch has no choice but to appear. It rises from the sand, taking the vague shape of a doll wearing a fancy dress, its eyes hidden by hair made of shifting sand. "Alright everyone," you say, priming another volley to loose. "Same strategy applies for the big one."
You barely have time to loose your arrows as the witch sends a sandstorm cascading out from its sleeves. The vicious winds tear through the frozen statues of its familiars, tear through the piles of random junk; tear through just about everything in their path. Kyouko acts quickly, setting alight the arrows you've loosed, melting the ice and dampening the sand around the witch. "Hit it!" she cries out, as you and Nagatsuki Miyuki bring your ice to bear.
A large patch of sand around the witch is turned into frozen mud, but the witch hardly seems daunted by your attacks; and unfortunately for you, it would appear that being frozen is no escape for the sand the witch commands. Defensive barriers barely have time to be thrown up before they are buffeted by a storm of frozen sands. Kyouko attempts to bind the witch with her chain-links, but in a move you really should have seen coming, the witch passes through the breaks in Kyouko's lattice; and your own attempts to stop the witch's advance hardly fare any better because the witch has no problem commanding the sand in its labyrinth even when that sand is encased in ice; and as you've already experienced, the storm of ice and sand is a deadly combination. All the while, Tomoe-san is left with very little that she can do to provide effective offense; thus far, her best contribution to the battle has been in shooting down the witch's bullets of frozen ice.
The fight against this witch is turning into a major rout. With a body made of sand, there isn't much you or your team can do to hurt it. It recovers from the wounds dealt by Tomoe-san's bullets and Kyouko's spear instantaneously, and Kyouko's barrier lattice does little to hold the witch in place. Attempting to slow it down by dampening and then freezing the sand that forms its body has been the best you've been able to accomplish so far, but even that isn't going over as well as you'd have hoped; and for every chunk of the witch's ice that you freeze, all you're doing is giving it a harder-hitting projectile to fire back at you with.
You consider using Finitora Freccia against the witch, but given what you've seen so far you aren't sure freezing the witch will actually do you any good.
"Fuck this!" Kyouko cries out, as once again your attacks are foiled by the witch's sandy form. "This is stupid! We're never gunna get anywhere doing it like this! Let's just get outta here and come back with something that actually hurt the damn thing!"
"I'm inclined to agree," Nagatsuki Miyuki adds. "This isn't just an unfair fight at this point; it's becoming unwinnable. Let's just pull back for now, and come back with our servants."
"No!" In the shock of Tomoe-san's complete rejection of a retreat, the four of you are just barely able to dodge the witch's incoming strike. "Elsa Maria and Walpurgisnacht are one thing, but this is just an ordinary witch like any other! If we can't even beat an ordinary witch without the help of our servants, then how can we ever hope to defeat Walpurgisnacht?" That's Caster's attitude, through and through. You don't know if now is an appropriate time to be smiling. Even though he annoys her at times, it seems even Tomoe-san has picked up a few things from her servant. "I trust Caster to do his job, and he trusts me to do mine! That's why I'm not going to ask him for help when I know we can do this on our own!"
Ribbons unfurl from Tomoe-san's Soul Gem, and she casts then towards you as she cries out "Akemi-san! You know what to do!"
"Right!" As soon as you feel the warm sensation of Wunjo's spiritual hug enveloping your body, you freeze time. "Sorry, but it's urgent," you quickly say to Kirika. "Let's just hope this works."
"It will."
The gathering cold in your hand is biting, stinging, a pain to which you have yet become accustomed. But you endure it, until the time comes to loose your shot. "Finitora Freccia!" you cry as the freezing arrow pounces from your hand, racing fiercely towards the greyed-out sky before stopping midway through its arc. "I hope freezing them over won't damage the ignition components," you say, as you remove far too many bricks of plastic explosive from your shield's confines.
"Oh my," Tomoe-san marvels at your loot, idly wondering to herself "I hope whoever was in charge of munitions storage didn't get in trouble when you stole all those explosives, Akemi-san."
You have nothing to say to Tomoe-san as you finish setting your explosive charges. Even with Tomoe-san's Grief dampening, loosing a full-power Finitora Freccia has left you drained; a Grief Seed allows you to take care of yourself, and time resumes as the harrowing screech of your arrow in flight once more makes itself heard. "On my mark," you say to Tomoe-san, who immediately proceeds to charge up for her own final shot as well. Higher and higher your arrow soars, at dazzling speeds, ripping the warmth from the water molecules in its wake and forming the frozen droplets into new arrows, repeating the process until the flight of frozen projectiles reaches their zenith. Suddenly, the storm of arrows descends upon the witch. Though it raises its arms and calls upon a barrage of sand, no effort is enough to save it from the deadly hail.
The witch, and all the sand surrounding it, are immediately flash-frozen; and your thumb flicks the trigger for your explosive charges.
"Tiro... Finale!"
Tomoe-san unleashes her cannonade as your explosives send chunks of frozen sand flying in all directions. Shot after shot rings from her cannons, blasting apart each clump of frozen sand as it flies. The walls of the labyrinth fade as the thunderous applause of Tomoe-san's cannons comes to a close - Encore, encore! - leaving behind just a single Grief Seed in the frozen tundra.
[ ] Wat do?
NEW
Minor character unlocked!
The Witch of Sandboxes. Her nature is Immersion. This Witch has strong preferences and never compromises. She is trying to build an acceptable sandcastle, but she can never satisfy herself. She has destroyed and rebuilt her castles so many times she doesn't even remember what she wanted to create in the first place. When she does manage to make a nice castle, she feels much better for a while, but ends up destroying it again. She looks like a young lady, but acts like a little child. If she is interrupted when she is playing with her sand, she cries and goes on a rampage.
If you're wondering why neither Kyouko nor Miyuki can turn the sand into glass, here's why- Sand melts at around 1700°C. However, the fire from Kyouko's Sowilo and from Miyuki's pistol have both previously been established as being red, which means their fires are only reaching temperatures of around 600-800°C. For the temperature we want, we'd need to be looking for an intense blue flame. Hint hint
[q] Ping Archer and Assassin
-[q] "Any idea how we're supposed to defeat something that can control sand in a desert? Ice doesn't seem to be doing anything but give it something harder to hit us with."
[x] Plan Old Reliable
-[x] Stop Time
--[x] Cover the witch in explosives
---[x] Watch the fireworks.
But the witch is also made of sand, so if we blow it up we're just exploding sand all over the place and doing nothing to stop the witch from reforming.
[jk] Fall back for now.
-[jk] Return to the Labrynth armed with super soakers and several gallons of water.
[x] Plan Old Reliable V.2
-[x] Stop Time
--[x] Have Mami apply Grief Dampening.
---[x] Finitora Freccia Maggiore
----[x] If you're able to keep time frozen afterwards, cover the Witch in explosives.
-----[x] Watch the Fireworks
----[x] If you're unable to keep time frozen afterwards, have the others destroy what's left of the witch.
Come on man, don't be like that. Everyone knows you need a vacuum cleaner to defeat sand enemies. Didn't you ever read issue #4 of The Amazing Spider-Man?

Well, we'd need adequate suction if we wanted to suck the witch up in a vacuum. Then we'd need a place to store the witch, and... I'm sure it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to suck the witch inside our shield. You know, if we got everything else we cared about out first.
The most recent vote didn't give me enough to work with, so I've stapled it onto the end of yesterday's update. That's the penultimate witch down, and just one more to go.

Well then... that was kinda epic. Love the fact that Mami's ego is showing too.
[X] Plan Grief Is Not Part Of A Balanced Diet
-[X] Go ahead with the "cleanse people's Grief Seeds with Archer" thing, using this opportunity to practice Inguz through extensive practical application
--[X] While you're doing this, have a simple rundown on what they did and didn't do right in regards to this Witch
---[X] It was an intrinsically poor matchup you feel, though then again most lone magical girls would be hard pressed to have a counter against this gimmicky Witch
---[X] Perhaps you could have used Inguz to help layer and store Kyoko's Sowilo attacks until it could be released in a single hot enough blast?
----[X] Actually, time-stopping and Reinforcing Tomoe-san's Tiro Finale might have done the trick as well, as once detonated her Tiro Finale shots explode quite literally enough that the enhanced shot might have been able to release enough energy to completely eradicate the Witch
-[X] Spend the rest of the time you have before heading over to the Mikuni residence with Assassin, doing the thing
--[X] Spend as much time as is necessary preparing these charms with Oriko, apologize to her for not having thought of this sooner, though really you have your paranoia to thank for it's last minute introduction into your head
---[X] How'd her dinner with Caren go? You would hope that it at least left off on a positive note.
I figure this is a good way to add a bit of flavor to the usual Inguz practice sessions, especially since Homura's never done this before.
Also yes, Mami's Tiro Finale shots do happen to explode like an explosive, which watching Magia Record reminded me of. Apparently Mami can do mini-Tiro Finale shots as well, though she doesn't exactly need less firepower what with what's coming now does she?
I've had far too few opportunities to unleash Smug Mumi in this quest. I'm hoping that will change in the sequel now that Caster's own smugness has had adequate time to rub off on her.

Since we only saw the sliver of the dinner conversation that was voted on, how are you - and anyone else watching right now, seriously guys, you're allowed to chime in as well - thinking dinner went, as a whole? What do you think Oriko's response would be to us asking that question?
----[X] Actually, time-stopping and Reinforcing Tomoe-san's Tiro Finale might have done the trick as well, as once detonated her Tiro Finale shots explode quite literally enough that the enhanced shot might have been able to release enough energy to completely eradicate the Witch
I realise retroactively that if this was done as the last vote, I would've gone for it because I don't think, but it's kind of a case of 'better safe than sorry'. Though, I didn't notice it was the stronger version of Freccia when I voted.
Possibly unneeded question, but are we supposed to know Mami can shoot explosions? You know, 'in this timeline'.
Because that's how she fires Tiro Finale in its default state. I just forgot about it personally since the only times she uses the technique in this quest is when it either overkills the Witch or when it's used against a gimmicky one that doesn't like conventional means of destruction. It's a simple but dangerously effective attack, after all.
Snow... How long has it been since you've seen the snow? It'll be summer soon, but thanks to the overwhelming power of your Isa rune, you can see the snow whenever you'd like. It's so pure, so white; and was it always this cold? you think, as you retrieve the Grief Seed from the frozen tundra that remains of the witch's labyrinth. You don't care who gets tonight's Grief Seed; come Sunday, it probably won't matter which of you holds it.
"Is something the matter, Akemi-san?" you hear Tomoe-san asking you as the last of the snow fades with the passing of the labyrinth from reality. "You look... Sad, almost. I can't recall seeing you look this way in a long time."
"I was just thinking," you say, pocketing the Grief Seed within your shield until its new owner can be determined. "I've spent so much of my life in the hospital that I can't remember the last time I saw snow like this."
"Well, with a little luck, maybe we'll see more snow again on Sunday." Tomoe-san smiles, patting you on the shoulder as she says, not just to you but to everyone, "Now, how about we head back to my place for something warm to drink."
"Archer, when you get the chance, meet us at the Tomoe apartment," you say to your father as you and your team turn in for the night. "And tell Kirika I'm sorry. It was urgent."
"Right. I'll meet you there shortly."
Archer does, in fact, meet you at the Tomoe apartment shortly; in fact, he's already there by the time you and the others arrive. "Ah, Archer," Tomoe-san says as she opens the door. "What an unexpected surprise. What brings you here?"
"Homura wanted to try filling Lancer's shoes for the night," Archer says. Tomoe-san opens the door further, revealing him to be seated at the table alongside Rider. "Rider let me in. You girls have fun tonight?"
Tomoe-san looks back on you, Kyouko, and Nagatsuki Miyuki. "I suppose things could have gone worse," she says. "We did manage to defeat the witch on our own."
"That's good to hear." With her shoes removed, Tomoe-san parts to allow you and the others to enter the apartment, while she heads to the kitchen to make something for everyone to drink. Once your shoes are off, you make straight for the table, sitting down beside Archer, who immediately wraps his arm around you. "You've come a long way since we first met, haven't you?" he asks, beaming proudly. "Look at you now; don't even need your old man to defeat witches anymore."
"Only because you've taught me so well," you reply. Wthout Archer there to guide you through the earliest days of this loop, you wouldn't be able to put a single scratch on even the weakest witch. It's only thanks to him, teaching you how to use Projection magecraft, that you've been able to keep up with your fellow puella magi as a worthwhile member of the team. "Thank you."
"Forgive me if I'm being rude by asking this," Nagatsuki MIyuki says, "But, I guess I'm still a little confused about your whole relationship. What's it like, having your dad also be your servant?"
"Why would it be any different?" you ask Nagatsuki Miyuki. "What does it matter that my father fights alongside me in battle and is also the ghost of a powerful hero? We still love and trust one another like any other father and daughter would. I've never had to use a Command Seal to make him obey me, and he's never done anything so objectionable that I'd feel the need to violate his trust by using one."
"You're lucky," Archer says. "You're the only one on the team that still has both of your birth parents in your life. But for the rest of the girls, the families they've found are just as valid as the family you were born into."
"Right, sorry, I didn't mean for that to come off as rude. I just... You're probably right, and it's just me not getting it because my dad's not a servant like you are."
Archer nods, turning to you as Tomoe-san emerges from the kitchen, carrying not tea this time, but hot chocolate. Your musing about the snow must have inspired her. "Well?" Archer asks, nudging you as Tomoe-san joins the others at the table. "Ready to see if you're up to the task of replacing Lancer?"
"Yeah."
Tomoe-san, Kyouko, and Nagatsuki Miyuki cleanse their Soul Gems of the night's imperfections, and hand their dirtied Grief Seeds over to you. You've been practicing Inguz for almost two weeks now, and you've seen how Lancer does it; all you have to do is replicate what you've seen her do. It's nowhere near as easy as Lancer made it out to be. Even though you're following what you've seen exactly, it still feels like the transfer of Grief out of your team's Grief Seeds is taking more out of you than is worthwhile for what you're trying to do.
Work is slow, and your concentration is intense; but eventually, you manage to achieve the desired results. You breathe a sigh of relief as your work concludes, wondering how Lancer makes it look so easy. She has more experience using her runes than you do, and probably a larger store of mana as well. A difficult task like this would seem like nothing to her. But you are finished, all the same.
"How are you feeling?" Archer asks; with your job complete, it's now Archer's turn to remove the cleansed Grief from existence with that magical dagger of his. "You look beat."
"I feel beat." You reach for the hot chocolate, on the suggestion that it'll make you feel better. It does, and once your body feels refreshed you say "Now, let's talk about that witch; what did we do right, and what could we have done better?"
"Uh, brought our servants?" Kyouko immediately says. "Melting the sand seemed like a pretty good idea, but neither me or Four Eyes could do it."
"True, it's disappointing that we couldn't melt the witch or its familiars, but I think we managed to do a good job with the familiars all the same. The witch, not so much."
"Being able to melt the witch would'a been a lot easier."
"It would have, and I wish I knew why it didn't work." Maybe Kyouko and Nagatsuki Miyuki weren't applying their fire for long enough? Maybe the fire wasn't hot enough? "I wonder, if I had used Inguz to store layers of your flame attacks on top of one another, could we have possibly raised the temperature of the flames high enough to where it would have melted the sand?"
Nagatsuki Miyuki shrugs; she doesn't appear to have an answer either. "I think that was just a really poor matchup for us," she says. Outside of your super-powerful freezing arrows, there wasn't really much we could have done against a pile of sand. The idea you had of having Sakura and I melt your ice before sending in another wave to make sure there was enough moisture to freeze the sand was a good idea, but..." She shakes her head, adding "I mean, without you there, we'd have been screwed."
"I remember you wanting to test what would happen if you used Reinforcement on my Tiro Finale," Tomoe-san says. "Do you think doing that might have helped? If I could have worked towards a large enough blast as to eradicate all the sand at once, then maybe..."
"It's possible," you say. "But I suppose there's no way to know at this point."
