[X] Plan Convincing Hitomi's Parents
"... And so, since everyone else was already convinced that you'd be joining us as a chaperone, that's what I told Hitomi to tell her parents."
"And, they were okay with that?"
"Well, not exactly. They said they wanted to speak with you before letting some stranger watch their daughter for the weekend. With everything else that's happened in this city, I can't say I blame them."
"So what do you want me to do about it?"
"Let them speak with you, obviously. Just head over to their house when school gets out, talk to them for a bit, and get the okay for Hitomi to go with us."
Your master's plan sounded simple enough at the time, but you've got more than enough experience under your belt to know that 'simple' isn't always so. You stopped at the liquor store on the way over to pick up a nice bottle of sake, sort of like a housewarming present but not, in the hopes that going the extra mile will impress them; but there's always the chance that your efforts will fall flat. After all, the only thing you know about the Shizukis is that they're a rather traditional pair; and you mean that in both the good and the bad definitions.
You take one last second to straighten your hair and your shirt, before ringing the doorbell. "Who is it?" you hear a female voice calling from inside the two-story western-style house.
"It's Archer," you respond. "Akemi Homura's guardian. She said you wanted to speak with me before letting your daughter go on her trip later."
No response follows from inside, but seconds after hearing the tumblers unlock, you are greeted to an open door and the sight of a woman who couldn't be anyone other than Hitomi's mother. "Welcome, welcome," she says, beckoning you in. "You know, I've heard so much about you from my daughter and her friends; it's so nice to finally meet you."
"Only good things, I hope." You take your shoes off at the foyer, and hand the bottle of sake over, saying "I hope you and your husband don't mind, but I brought a present."
"Oh not at all," the mother Shizuki says, smiling as she accepts your gift. With a laugh, she adds "I guess with our daughter out of the house for the weekend, I'll have to let my husband know that it'll be a party tonight."
So far, so good. At least the mother seems amicable enough to letting her daughter go; but you've yet to meet the husband. You don't have to wait much longer, as the mother Shizuki leads you into the living room; it's not quite as spacious as the Mikuni living room, but with its open floor plan and spacious windows, it manages to create the illusion of size. Her husband is waiting for you, and as soon as you've entered, his wife takes a seat beside him on the leather couch. There's a chair already pulled up for you, seated across from them on the other side of the coffee table. The husband, with his stern face and eyes like smouldering embers, cuts a much more imposing figure than his gentle-faced wife, and you sit, feeling as though you've already made some kind of gaffe in his eyes. It's definitely the eyes.
"You're certainly an interesting character," the husband says, giving you barely a moment's reprieve after being seated before beginning. "I hear your cooking has caused quite the stir among my daughter and her friends."
"Hunger is the enemy," you say, recalling something that Saber said to you. "Good food is a morale booster, and certainly we could all use some morale boosting after everything that's happened recently."
"Have you had the chance to sample some of Kaname-san's cooking? You know, Miki's girl used to rave about him as well, until you showed up; have you and he ever had the chance to see who's the better chef?"
"Unfortunately not, though Sayaka has been pestering Homura and I nonstop about it."
The Shizuki husband laughs, and he almost sounds like a normal person and not the most terrifying foe you've ever faced. He reaches his hand out, saying "Shizuki Soujuurou," and just like that, his terrifying persona melts away, and the man before you becomes no more than another person, now that you've learned his name. With his other hand, Soujuurou gestures to his wife, adding "And this is my wife, Chihiro." Shizuki Chihiro bows her head in your direction as her name is spoken. "And you are?"
"Emiya Shirou," you reply, taking Soujuurou's hand and giving it a firm shake. "But ever since I took archery back in high school, everyone's always called me "Archer'."
"Ah, a fellow bowman," Soujuurou says with a smile. "Good to know I'm not the only one around here with an appreciation for the craft. Can I assume you're the one who got Akemi into archery as well?" You nod; though something tells you that it wasn't just your influence that guided her towards the bow and arrow. A certain rosewood bow sticks out in your mind as the other source of inspiration. "So, you can cook, and you can do archery; but what else can you tell me about yourself?" And, just like that, the terrifying mask comes right back on. "Why should I let you be the one chaperoning my only daughter?"
Fortunately, you had been expecting for a question like this, and came prepared with what you hope won't just sound like a canned response. "Well for starters, your daughter and her friends are working on a project for their English literature class. I'd like to consider myself well-versed in the classics, and I even spent a few years studying literature, history, and mythology at a prestigious institute in London. Unlike some others might-" you aren't naming names, but you can tell from the look in his eyes that Soujuuro already knows about whom you're speaking "-I don't plan on letting your daughter or her friends neglect their studies just because they're on vacation. They're going to have fun, but that doesn't mean letting them dodge their responsibilities."
Soujuurou nods, saying "Good answer. I know our daughters are diligent enough, but that Miki girl... I'm sure you've already figured out you'll need to keep an eye on her. But what if something goes wrong? Sure, archery and the classics are all well and good, but how are you prepared to handle things if something happens to my daughter or one of her friends?"
"In addition to those, I'm also a fair hand at a few different martial arts." Granted, creating swords out of nothing is a far cry from what the Shizuki patriarch must be thinking. "If anyone tries to harm one of the girls, they won't be getting very far; and, I won't be the only one going with them, either." At this, Soujuurou raises a curious eye; his daughter must not have mentioned another chaperone. Then again, you're only making the assumption that Lancer will be joining her master. "The butler of the one who set this trip up is a trained security professional. Even if, God forbid, something gets past me, it won't get past her."
"My daughter never mentioned there would be another chaperone." You hope, by that look in Soujuurou's eye, you haven't screwed up by vouching for Lancer's ability to safeguard his daughter. "Why don't you tell me a little bit more about this trip; who's the one responsible for setting it up? Why now, as opposed to waiting for the summer break?"
"The one responsible is a friend of Homura's, a girl by the name of Mikuni Oriko. She's the one whose beach house your daughter and her friends will be staying in, and the reason she chose now, rather than the summer break, was to give her friends a chance to get away from everything that's been happening in the city lately; which, frankly, I think is a great idea. Having the chance to relax and have some fun, without having to worry that one of them might be next, will be good for them both personally and academically."
"Mikuni..." Shizuki Chihiro muses at the name, and she asks "Isn't her uncle the representative for Mitakihara in the House?"
Soujuurou nods, adding "Rep for Kanagawa's nineteenth. Good man; got to shake his hand while he was campaigning back in the '09 election. Shame about that scandal with his younger brother, though. I hope the daughter hasn't picked up the same habits as her father."
If he only knew, the things Mikuni has done far outstrip any scandal her father could have been involved in. But, for the sake of your master and her friends, you've got to play it cool. "I've had the chance to meet Mikuni Oriko a few times; she's a real angel, nothing at all like her father. She really only wants to give her friends the chance to relax and have a good time."
The Shizukis nod, and Soujuurou asks "Perhaps you can tell me, then, why this is the first we're hearing about her, if she's such good friends with our daughter?"
"Actually, she's more friends with Homura than with your daughter. But when she was extending invitations to everyone, she said it didn't feel right to leave the friends of her friends out."
Soujuurou nods again, but before he can speak, you hear the sound of the front door unlocking. "Mother, father, I'm home!"
"We're in the living room, sweetie!" You hear the sound of shuffling in the foyer, and a few moments later Hitomi has joined her parents. "Your father and I have just been talking with Archer about your trip."
"Yes. In fact-" Soujuurou's eyes meander around the room; to his daughter, his wife, and to you "-if you'll give us just a few minutes, your mother and I will have come to a decision about whether or not to let you go." Silently, Soujuurou beckons his wife into the kitchen, leaving you and Hitomi alone while her parents deliberate.
"Well, you're still here," Hitomi says, setting her school bag down beside the couch as she takes her seat. "So I imagine you've made a fair impression on my parents."
"You think?"
"I have lived with them for the past fourteen years. I'd like to think I've come to know my mother and father well enough in that time to make the call that I have."
"Hitomi." Mother and father return from the kitchen, and true to their daughter's word, Soujuurou's face no longer wear the mask of the angry, unapproachable demon. Now, he looks like the normal family man whom you had seen for only a few moments after introducing yourself as a fellow archery enthusiast. "Your mother and I have decided to let you go with your friends," he says, earning a jubilant smile and a hug from his daughter as she leaps up from the couch at the good news her father has delivered. He looks to you, and for a brief moment the demon is back, before departing as he pats his daughter on the head, speaking to both you and she as he says "On the condition that you not let yourself slack in your studies while you're away. If you come home and we find out you haven't done all your schoolwork, you're going to be in a lot of trouble."
"Now go get packed, sweetie," Chihiro adds, cutting in between her husband to give her daughter a hug as well. "We'll see you tomorrow night."
"Thank you father, mother; I promise you I won't ignore my studies while I'm away."
Hitomi tears herself out of her parents' embrace, heading up the stairs to her room to get packed. "I'm trusting you to keep my daughter safe," Soujuurou says once HItomi is out of earshot, the demon having once more returned to his face. "Do not violate that trust."
[Archer] Wat do?
[Homura] Wat do?
