Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

@PlaguePaladin
You'll be happy to know that your massive block of text regarding our dealing with Sigurd was not a problem for me to turn into usable material. Update should be coming... Hopefully within the next two hours. But while we're all waiting for that, could I ask if you, or if @NMS, @K4lepo, or @Riku_Furude remember who we had making Luck charms? I can't recall if it was Oriko and Lancer, Hitomi, or Rin and Sakura; could somebody please check for me if you have the time?

Day 29 Chapter 33
[X] Plan: Battle Plans

After dinner you, Archer, Oriko, Kirika, and Aunt Illya all said your goodbyes to Mom, and left her to finish packing her things for the visit with her parents. You made sure to make an extra stop in the Mikuni guest bedroom before leaving, to say goodbye to Amy as well. She was absent all throughout dinner, and you want to make sure you get to say goodbye to her before you head off into the unknown that is tomorrow.

"Be a good girl for mom, okay?" you say, cuddling Amy close to your chest. She gives off an obstinate "Mew" as though she doesn't want you to leave – you aren't fooling yourself; you know she's smart enough to know that you're leaving – and it takes all your willpower to set her down rather than to stay with her like she would prefer. "I have to go," you say amidst her protests. "I'll see you tomorrow, Amy, I promise. So just be a good girl for Mom until then. Get in your travel cage when she needs you to, and be nice to grandma and grandpa."

"So, dad, you planning on coming back here again after we're done?" Kirika asks. With a sly look on her face as Archer turns to her, she nudges him with her elbow, adding "I'm sure mom would love it if you could say goodbye to her before she has to go."

"I know she would, pumpkin," Archer says, never once giving Kirika the footing she needs to keep going. "We'll see. It'll depend on what things look like when we're done here tonight. I'm not sure I'll want to keep making trips back and forth, back and forth, but if it's for your mom…"

"Speaking of, Akemi-san?" Oriko addresses you, and you turn to her when she asks for you. "What will we be doing about sleeping arrangements? It's a bit far from my mansion to Downtown where the fighting is likely to be; will we be staying at your building, perhaps? Tomoe-san's building, if she allows us?"

"Whatever will put us closest to the action tomorrow, I'd imagine," you say. "Actually, earlier I had brought up to the Saints the idea of making camp in proximity to Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed, so we'd have a better chance to intercept Sidonia before she could make her move."

Oriko shakes her head. "I would advise against that," she says. "I think it's a good idea, on paper, but in practice the idea scares me. It's very possible that Sidonia has rigged the entire site with explosives; she would have to have, unless she has some other way of bringing Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed to the surface to perform her ritual. We should be very careful about how close in proximity we make camp, if that's what we end up deciding, or we may be taken by a fatal surprise before we're actually able to intercept Sidonia."

"We might not have to worry about that," Archer says. "When Rin and I went into her workshop the first time, I saw an eight-pointed array of unknown origin lining the floor in the chamber where she was keeping Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed. It might have just been used in refining the Grief, since she had massive glass tanks of Grief set up on each point, but if it's not she might not need to bring it to the surface to complete her ritual."

Oriko's eyes go wide, and she nods her head. "Still, I would be too afraid of explosives Sidonia had planted beforehand to be comfortable camping out in close proximity," she says. "I wish I could tell you what we're in store for tomorrow, Akemi-san, but… If I could just get over her perception-blocking, none of this would have had the chance to happen in the first place."

"Don't beat yourself up over it."

You've made sure to text Hitomi and Tomoe-san, and Oriko has texted Nurse Ortensia, and everyone is going to be at the warehouse tonight for one final team meeting. SO, this is it, the moment of truth. Silence falls over the warehouse as you take up a seat at the head of the operations table, and here we go.

"Good evening," you say. "Tomorrow is the big day, and I wish I had getter news to give. But, at least we know what we're up against." Courtesy of Hijiri Kanna, who is sandwiched between Wakaba Mirai and Kanna Niko, kept from leaving the table and squirrelling away to some corner where she can self-hate. "Before we get started, I think it's appropriate that we remember to keep things simple, and flexible. We may know what we're up against, but even still we don't know what we're up against is capable of, so we need to be able to adapt to a changing situation on the fly."

"Well, we know one thing we'll be up against, "AsamI Saki says. "What should we do about Saber? At the moment, he's still her heaviest hitter, and even if we assume Sidonia's made some changes since the last time we saw him, we still have a general idea of what we can expect. So…?"

"That's easy," Kyouko says. "Just let Killer take care of'em. Killer's fucking invincible; and I ain't just exaggerating, either. Unless his heel gets nicked, ain't a single fucking thing your old Saber can do ta touch him."

Asami Saki stares; "And if his heel gets nicked, then what?" she asks, which causes Kyouko to back down from her previous bluster. "I don't imagine you'd be too happy if your overconfidence got him killed, would you?"

"To say nothing of the fact that Sigurd is a descendant of Odin," Oriko says. "He'll have the necessary divinity to cut through Rider's protection, regardless; wouldn't he?" And again, Oriko's words cut Kyouko's former bluster down to size. "Let Lancer handle Sigurd. She's the one he wants to fight, first and foremost."

"Right, but what if Sigurd manages to kill her, too?" Aunt Illya asks. "I might not know much about what his parameters are like, but I imagine he'd be pretty strong; maybe even equivalent to King Arthur. Can your Lancer take him when he's being backed up by whatever shenanigans Sidonia has at her disposal, and are you prepared to let your servant die to take him down?" When Aunt Illya's words cause Oriko to back down, she offers up another proposition. "Let Berserker handle Sigurd. He's the strongest hero there is."

"I'd be inclined to agree," Archer says. "At least, on paper. The problem is Sigurd's Noble Phantasm, Gram. It's as strong as Excalibur at full throttle. If Sigurd unleashes Gram on us, first, there will be a chunk of city that simply no longer exists. Second, there's a good chance that a full-power strike from Gram will take multiple lives from Heracles. He might be able to defeat Sigurd, but I'd prefer that Heracles keep as many lives as possible going into the fight against Sidonia's Beast. I have a feeling we're going to need them there."

"Well, if one Berserker's no good, how about two?" Kirika and Maki Kaoru have teamed up, and Maki Kaoru says "Both Kure and me have pretty strong Berserkers, stat-wise. Maybe if you're worried about conserving your aunt's Berserker for Sidonia's Beast, you could let me and Kure handle things?"

"Are you sure you can handle it?" Archer asks, more to Kirika than anything else. "It's going to take a lot of mana to keep those two fuelled while they're fighting Sigurd, and I'm not sure if our eggheads would be able to throw together any more Mystic Codes to keep you both at capacity. Are you sure you're both up for that?"

Maki Kaoru gives an affirmative nod of her head, but Kirika looks unsure. If you had to guess, her ability to keep Berserker fuelled will depend on how much mana Oriko is able to top her off by when they reconvene in private later tonight. Why you didn't just insist that your eggheads make another transmitter and receiver for Oriko and Kirika specifically, you don't know.

Maybe they'll surprise you and pull one out of thin air before tomorrow.

"Not to mention," Archer says, not just to Kirika and Maki Kaoru, but to everyone, "I'd like to reiterate the important part of fighting Sigurd; that he not be allowed to fire off Gram. Whoever fights him, needs to be tanky enough, or have enough means of erecting magical defences, that they can stop Gram or survive a hit if we're unlucky enough and he gets one off."

"If Sigurd's Noble Phantasm is a problem, then why not, oh, I don't know, make use of me?" Assassin pushes her way past her master, who shoots her a glare but is cut off before more than an annoyed "Assassin, don't-" which is promptly shut down by Assassin. "Since all of you have been holding me back from actually doing any of the fighting, I suppose you'd all forgotten that I have a Noble Phantasm that is specifically designed for breaking swords. Caster's attack merely took the tip off, the last time they fought, if your report was accurate, but my Sword Breaker will destroy Gram. I will render it unusable in his hands, and free Lancer up to kill him a second time."

"Sister, are you sure?" Scáthach asks. "You could die. I- I just got you back, sister. I know you've said you don't really enjoy the modern era, but if I lost you, so soon after finding you again, I'd-"

Despite the annoyance on her face directed towards her servant's rudeness, Nurse Ortensia has no choice but to agree with Assassin. "I'm confident that Lancer and Assassin, if they work together, can defeat Sigurd," she says. "Maybe even without suffering any casualties, with a little luck. I would prefer to have one additional fighter held in reserve, in case we're right and Sidonia is able to summon Gudrun alongside Sigurd, but if not then those two should be enough to do it."

"Yes, but what about the shard of Dáinsleif?" Tomoe-san asks. "Caster and I are safekeeping it, but assuming Sidonia is able to reclaim it, Assassin's Noble Phantasm would be greatly appreciated. However, if we show it off against Sigurd, Sidonia might not give her a chance to use it again against Dáinsleif."

"Well?" Asami Saki asks you. "You're the one coming up with our plan for tomorrow. What do you think?"

[ ] Let Rider handle Sigurd
[ ] Let Heracles handle Sigurd
[ ] Let Berserker and Boudica handle Sigurd
[ ] Let Lancer and Assassin handle Sigurd
[ ] Come up with another plan, and have someone else handle Sigurd

"Now, Oriko, as we were walking over here, you mentioned being concerned about Sidonia having mined the area around Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed as a reason against making camp in its proximity," you say. Oriko nods her head, and that's when you say "So, on the topic of that, next, I think it might not be a bad idea for us to do a round of mine-sweeping in the area, just in case your hunch was correct."

Again, Oriko nods her head, and says "I think that would be agreeable," to you. "I could use my drones to make barriers around any mines we found, and remotely detonate them from a safe distance."

It's now that Misaki Umika raises her hand. "It might be dangerous of us to do this," she says, telegraphing her idea into all of your heads, "But maybe, after we're done minesweeping the area, we could take all of the explosives we've got sitting in our old base, and counter-mine the area? With enough magic-users on our side, we could probably figure out how to hijack the fuses and detonators away from Sidonia. That way, if she tried to get to Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed, we could just try blowing it up on her?"

"Yeah, but then we'd have to actually move them from our old base to here," Wakaba Mirai says. "Those things are pretty touchy, and if we mess up transporting them, there goes a few city blocks. We'd need my bears to move them, since I don't really trust any of us to do it and not get blown up first."

"Except, a big chain of bears moving almost two-dozen explosives from one city to another would certainly draw Sidonia's attention," Hijiri Kana says. When eyes turn on her, she shrinks back into her creator's shadow, as if regretting she had even spoke up at all. "Trust me. I know how that woman operates, and I'm positive she'd spot us if we tried moving all those explosives."

"Well then we'll just make you move them, how about?" Wakaba Mirai says, nudging Hijiri Kanna, perhaps more roughly than she perhaps deserves, for simply sitting there and trying to contribute. "You put them there in the first place, right? Nobody'll care if you get blown up."

It takes glares from Kazumi, Asami Saki, and Kanna Niko to make Wakaba Mirai back down. "Anyway, with that being said, and I know we asked you this before, Akemi," Wakaba Mirai says, "What are we going to do about keeping our squishier people safe?" Again, Wakaba Mirai gives Hijiri Kanna a stronger nudge than she perhaps deserves, for sitting there and doing nothing. "I mean, personally, I'd be fine if we chopped off her remaining limbs and stuck her in a backpack so I could carry her around with me. That's all she's good for, right, being my battery?"

"You can't!" Kazumi shouts. "Why are you being so mean to her, Mirai? I know she's hurt us, but that's just so unfair to say to her! She's already suffering just from having lost her arm, and you want to chop off her other limbs, too?"

"Why are you sticking up for her?" Wakaba Mirai snaps back at Kazumi. "She's the reason all this happened! So what if I'm being mean to her; it's still better than she deserves! She's lucky I'm even okay with using her as a battery, and that I don't just-"

"We're not going to chop her other limbs off just to make things more convenient for you," Kanna Niko says, changing the subject back to the task at hand. She hesitates, but Hijiri Kanna doesn't push her away when Kanna Niko lays an arm on what remains of her right shoulder. "Frankly, aside from it being… Kind of embarrassing, I'm sure, I don't see a problem with stuffing her inside one of your teddy bears, and then using our magically-inclined servants to up-armour that. Maybe, if we put a little extra something in the right arm, she could even contribute to the fighting in her own way, like that."

"Actually, why don't we just use Rider?" AsamI Saki suggests. "I mean, you're finally able to support him now, right Mirai? He'll already be out and fighting, so why don't we just stuff her, and anybody else that's too squishy to fight, like Shizuki, into Rider's big flying boat and have him keep them safe?"

"Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that," Kyouko says. "Fucking bullshit is what that boat is, but if it'll keep Seaweed safe while we're all wailing on that Sidonia bitch, more power to him."

"Perhaps, Wakaba-san, if you were willing and able to support him, you could also have Ramesses engage his third Noble Phantasm on top of Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed?" Tomoe-san asks. "It would be an added layer of protection on top of all our other means of keeping it away from her."

An "Uh…" escapes Wakaba Mirai's lips. "I should be able to provide for him, since I'm drawing mana from Kazumi and her," she says. "But, I've never tried supporting Rider while he has his whole temple complex thing up before, so I don't know… I'll certainly give it a try, but I can't really guarantee it'll last the whole fight, so we should probably be careful about when we have him deploy it."

"Please do," you say to Wakaba Mirai. "Now… Oriko, I believe, you and Lancer were the ones working on those Luck charms, correct? How are those coming along?"

"I believe that Lancer is making good progress working on them," Oriko replies. "I can't guarantee that we'll be done with all of them tonight, but we will definitely be done before tomorrow morning, and we may even have a handful ready to go in a couple of hours." Oriko nods her head towards Hitomi, who has so far remained rather quiet throughout this meeting, and she says "I believe we would go quicker if we had Shizuki-san working with us."

"That shouldn't be a problem, Mikuni-san," Hitomi says. "Perhaps if they aren't busy either, I can ask Tohsaka-san and Matou-san if they would also be willing to help."

"Please do," you say. "As long as they're ready to go by tomorrow, that's fine, but the sooner that we know they'll work, the better."

Hitomi lets out an affirmative-sounding grunt as she nods her head, when a thought strikes her "Archer, if I might?" she asks, drawing your father's attention. "Earlier, you gave Saber a pair of spears that belonged to his Lancer incarnation, yes? Perhaps you would be willing to do the same for some of our other servants as well?"

"Yeah, that shouldn't be too much of a problem," Archer replies. "Did you have anything specific in mind? I doubt I could outfit Saber with anything better than those, or at least not with anything that he would be more familiar with. But if you or anyone else had anything in mind for some of our other servants…?"

"How about something for Berserker?" Aunt Illya asks. "For, uh, obvious reasons, we weren't exactly able to bring his usual stone club with us on the flight over. So if you could outfit him with something better, I'd really appreciate it."

"What about my Berserker?" Kirika asks. "He can use anything, right? So maybe you've got something in mind that'll burn through less of my mana than his sword will?"

"I'll see what I can pull out of my hat that might be appropriate," Archer says. "Are you sure the rest of you don't want anything in particular? I promise you, I'm very flexible."

"Perhaps shoving unfamiliar weapons into our hands isn't the best idea this late in the game," you say. Turning to the rest of the team, you ask [ ] "Now, is there anything else we need to cover?"

If there isn't, [ ] What do you do afterwards? (write-in)

All right, I believe that covers everything. We've got a good few choices for who gets to fight Sigurd. Hopefully they all look appealing enough, but I'm sure I've made one look a little better than the others. Also, if there's anything else we missed the first time around that we'd like to address now, now is the time to do it. Not counting our servants, I think everyone except for Rin and Sakura get a chance to speak here, but honestly I'm not even sure if they're at this meeting, or if they're back at Homura's building making their own preparations.

[X] Plan: Entrenching
-[X] Let Lancer and Assassin handle Sigurd
-[X] What do you do afterwards? (write-in)
--[X] Begin checking out Walpurgisnacht's grief seed for mines and begin defusing them, with Kazumi as your minesweeper (hopefully it doesn't just pick up Walpurgisnacht's grief seed and that's it).
--[X] When that's done, begin securing the place, have everyone set up their collective bounded fields (maybe tie them to Ramesses to better support him), and get to airing any collective grievances before tomorrow comes.

Why you didn't just insist that your eggheads make another transmitter and receiver for Oriko and Kirika specifically, you don't know.
Quick solution; have Archer make some Azoth daggers and take out the sword part so they're just marbles, and charge them for a while. In fact, we could probably use this as a grief seed substitute for the fight. Also I'd almost forgotten about Sword Breaker. For once, Assassin will be able to do something with it, huh?

I don't know if it's been asked before, but can Archer project Pain Breaker as he does with Rule Breaker?
The latter should be based on the former, so I guess their power isn't based on the user.

I would get why he wouldn't be allowed, though. Something that just straight up nulls all curses would be... a bit too OP here. Especially since it is "a materialization of love" and we have two people with a Love element around.

Canonically, Archer has been shown to be able to trace Rule Breaker, but it's not allowed in this quest for various reasons. As pain breaker seems to be either tied to her staff or an inherent ability, it is probably unlikely that it could be traced, either. So unfortunately not, unless he had some help with the aforementioned people with Love elements, and some of their bones.

This just reminded me that FGO had him keep the fighter jet from Fate/Zero.
Listen, man, a knight who can casually whip out an F-15J and blast people with a 20mm chaingun and air-to-air missiles is wa~ay cooler than just another sword laser beam #6357.

Now, regarding this- Wally's Grief Seed is way bigger than any of Sidonia's regular explosives, and anything she's planted is probably deep underground. So, assuming Kazumi can locate anything and that her ping doesn't get disrupted by the much larger pile of Grief in the immediate vicinity, how do you propose we get the explosives out? With shovels?

Wait a second, what's this about needing bones now? Isn't the bone of my sword good enough?

Also, while we're on the subject, isn't it just a little too coincidental that all three of the women in the Akemi-Emiya-Kure family have Love as their Element? Or, probably, in Minako's case, since we never checked and nothing's been confirmed. But probably.
Also I'd almost forgotten about Sword Breaker. For once, Assassin will be able to do something with it, huh?
Well maybe if we'd actually used her for combat like she wanted us to, this wouldn't be a problem. Imagine if we'd thrown her at Sigurd from the beginning. Anything but using her for civil works projects. She's going to enjoy castrating Sigurd, let me tell you.

Well, with Homura's ability to now throw out a bunch of workers, we could do it with shovels. But another option is attaching a very long drill to a SoP and drinking it up. Or we could try and remotely seal it from above-ground and then try and detonate it (so that Sidonia can't just break the seal and use it anyways).

Wait a second, what's this about needing bones now? Isn't the bone of my sword good enough?

Well, like with Kiritsugu, turning your origin into a conceptual weapon usually requires a piece of your body. But since Kirika, Homura, and Minako have it as their Elements, this probably isn't necessary.

Well maybe if we'd actually used her for combat like she wanted us to, this wouldn't be a problem. Imagine if we'd thrown her at Sigurd from the beginning. Anything but using her for civil works projects. She's going to enjoy castrating Sigurd, let me tell you.
Hey, I wasn't the one who wanted to use her for the base. And when she was available, there were a lot of things that needed doing and Bryn was theoretically the superior fighter of the two, so she got to fight instead. Excited to finally see her get to go wild.

Well, with Homura's ability to now throw out a bunch of workers, we could do it with shovels.
Well, birds and spiders can't dig, so that leaves the two humanoid familiars. Sure, we've got an army of the weak ones who could do it, but something tells me that our Clara Doll equivalents would just spend their time giggling at random nonsense rather than digging.
Excited to finally see her get to go wild.
Yeah, me too. Something tells me that their fight might just take up an entire update all on its own.

... You know, with the Sigurd fights lined up to be an Assassin vs Saber, and a Lancer vs Saber, this is going to feel a lot like the last few episodes of Apocrypha. Except I'm okay with Assassin winning because the Saber in question is not Best Girl, and Lancer should have won that fight in the first place because Karna is amazing and Sieg is as interesting as wet cardboard.

We did use Aife in combat. Sidonia impaled her in the chest with a bunch of flaming spears, remember?

Day 29 Chapter 34
[X] Plan: Entrenching

"Well?" Asami Saki asks you. "You're the one coming up with our plan for tomorrow. What do you think?"

You give each suggestion the consideration it is due. They all have upsides; Rider can't be harmed, and is probably bulky enough and strong enough to weather Sigurd's blows and wear him down enough to move in for the kill; Heracles definitely has the necessary bulk and strength to deal with Sigurd, if Rider doesn't; Berserker and Boudica each are powerful in their own right, and with two of them rather than one, it should be easier for them to wear Sigurd down together than either one of them by themselves; and the combination of Lancer and Assassin looks attractive, with two powerful fighters and a host of mixed martial and spellcasting abilities, with each also packing something powerful enough to let them handle Sigurd's greatest strengths, being his physical parameters and Gram.

However, each option also has its downsides, as well; If Sigurd manages to nick Rider's heel, which should be incredibly easy for him given his divinity and his affinity for spamming icicles in every direction, then Rider is almost certainly down for the count; despite Heracles' absurd physical parameters, Sigurd's strongest attacks are still strong enough to punch through his defences, and as Archer said, Hreacles' extra lives will be needed to fight against Sidonia's Beast, so you can't afford to waste them if you can help it; Berserker and Boudica combined might be enough to take on Sigurd, but if he ever manages to separate them, then their ability to deal with his is severely hampered, so say nothing of the fact that neither of them have a way to survive Gram; and you can't afford to lose Lancer because of the harm her death will do to Oriko, and if Assassin reveals Sword Breaker to Sidonia in the fight against Sigurd, it's doubtful she'll be given the opportunity to use it again against a restored Dáinsleif.

Still, after considering all of your options, you think "Lancer and Assassin," would be the best option. "On paper, the two of them look like they have the best chance of defeating Sigurd, at the lowest cost to our overall ability to fight. It'll be unfortunate if unveiling Assassin's Noble Phantasm loses us the chance to use it against Dáinsleif as well, but at the moment, Gram is still the bigger threat, and we need a way to break it so Sigurd can' destroy the city."

"Agreed," Assassin says. She glares at Tomoe-san and Caster, saying "If these two can keep Dáinsleif under lock and key, we won't need to worry about me losing my chance to use Sword Breaker a second time.

I promise you, I'm very flexible." In particular, Archer pays special attention to Lancer and Assassin, and asks each of them "Do either of you think you'll want or need any additional weapons? I'm sure I can find something that'll be helpful against Sigurd."

"Just give me what you promised me for all of my earlier assistance, and I should be fine," Assassin says. "All I need is my wand and my sword, and I swear to you I will castrate Sigurd; anything else would just be an added bonus."

Lancer nods her head, agreeing with Assassin; "And as I am, I am already equipped to fight and Kill Sigurd," she says, her voice trembling as she suppresses the anticipation boiling inside her. "I imagine I will require dedicated assistance in holding Sigurd back from engaging with me before Gram has been dealt with, but after that, I should only need the support of my master to keep me fuelled to my maximum in order to defeat him soundly."

"Perhaps shoving unfamiliar weapons into our hands isn't the best idea this late in the game," you say. Though you're sure everyone appreciates the offer, if both Lancer and Assassin say they don't need any additional weaponry from Archer, then you won't press the matter any further. Turning to the rest of the team, you ask "Now, is there anything else we need to cover?"

"Just one thing, Akemi-san," Oriko says. "If Lancer and Assassin are going to be fighting Sigurd together, then perhaps we should come up with a means of providing additional support to them; not necessarily through combat, but through other magical means."

The meaning behind Oriko's request is clear. It isn't that she thinks Lancer or Assassin will need help fighting Sigurd; it's that she wants to secure additional guarantees to protect either of them from being killed. "All right," you say to that effect. [ ] "What are some options we can explore for additional ways of keeping those two safe while they're fighting Sigurd?"

With that out of the way, and with nobody else bringing anything to your attention, it's finally time to move on to the final step of your plans for the night. "Kazumi, we'll be needing the help of your… Uh, your abilities," you say. "We need you to identify areas around Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed that Sidonia may have been mined, so we can begin deactivating them."

Kazumi is taken aback by your request. "Are you sure?" Not because she can't do it; you both know she can, but because- "Wouldn't I just pick up Wallyburger Night, uh, however the heck you say it? That Grief Seed, I mean? If it's so big, wouldn't I just end up picking that up if I tried minesweeping in the area?"

"It's possible," you say, noting that that would be the worst-case scenario. "But it might also not be. All we can do is give it a try. If it works, great, we've just deactivated another of Sidonia's assets. If it doesn't, then at least we'll know that we tried."

"So, what do we do if Kazumi does manage to find something, and it isn't just Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed she's picking up?" Wakaba Mirai asks.

"Then we dig," you reply. "Hopefully they won't be too far down, but if they're a reasonable distance down for us to dig, then we dig."

That's how you find you and your teammates wandering around outside, near the place where Sidonia erected her first workshop atop the place where Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed fell. Kazumi has her eyes closed, and is concentrating on maintaining her rune. Several of you – Kyouko and Kirika, namely – are growing visibly impatient, and Kyouko in particular can be seen drumming her fingers against the side of her leg.

"Hey, is anybody keeping watch on homunculus bitch?" Kyouko asks, leaning over to whisper her question in your ear. "Or is she just back at the warehouse, doing whatever the fuck she feels like?"

"Nightingale is watching her, I assume," you say, noticing the absence of Kanna Niko's servant. "We can trust her. She's had plenty of experience looking after her own master, after all. That one should be a piece of cake by comparison."

"Yeah, but she's strong enough ta rip someone's arm off, ain't she? What if she's able ta overpower her?"

"With only one arm, I'd imagine actually overcoming an opponent through physical force would be difficult," you reply. "She wouldn't have the advantage of a free arm with which to hold her victim down, so she'd have to keep them restrained with the same arm she's using to assault them with. Not to mention, she's despondent; I really don't think she's in any state of mind to be attacking anyone right now, let alone a servant that could probably overpower her with minimal effort."

Kyouko grunts. "You know, Spooky, I wish we'd found her in better shape," she says, surprising you with her level of concern for Hijiri Kanna. "Not 'cause I felt bad for her or anything, but 'cause if she'd been in better shape, we could'a beat the shit outta her fer fucking us over, and I wouldn't'a felt like shit doing it."

You can hear the bluster in Kyouko's voice as she tries to puff up her chest and sound tougher than she really is. But you wonder how much of that is real, and how much of her actually feels sorry for Hijiri Kanna's wretched living conditions in the week before you found her. You're tempted to say to Kyouko "Maybe once she has her arm back," but you stay silent. As much as you want to hit her, to make her hurt for what she did to your trust and your family, you won't. You'll hold yourself back, and be the person you know Madoka would want you to be.

That's when you see it. "Uh, hey, Spooky, is that… I mean, is her hair… Supposed ta do that?"

You don't think you've ever seen that before. Sure, either Kazumi or one of the other Saints probably said something to you, but hearing about something and actually seeing it happen, are two different things; and suffice it to say, you've never seen someone's hair literally take on a life of its own before. "I… Think so?" It comes out as a question, because you don't entirely believe what you're seeing either.

The other Saints don't seem anywhere near as surprised as you do to see that, and neither does Scáthach, so you're going to assume that the bad hair day you're seeing is in fact supposed to happen. But that doesn't change how weird it is, seeing for yourself.

"Well, it's going… Pretty crazy, and pointing all over the place," Kazumi says. "So, either there's a bunch of explosives that are all planted… Basically everywhere that we're standing, or else I'm just picking up Wallyworld's Grief Seed and all the Grief that's sunk into the ground. So… Your call, Akemi. [ ] What do you think we should do?"

Actually addressing us acknowledging that Lancer and Assassin are the best for taking care of Sigurd, while it takes up about 1/3rd of the update, isn't exactly necessary reading material. But it's there, and hopefully the logic behind our decision is well-founded, since I wasn't given much in the way of OOC reasoning behind the vote. Hopefully that all tracks appropriately. For everything else, don't forget that there's two things that need to be voted on; Oriko wants a plan from us to keep Lancer safe and not dead while she's fighting Sigurd, because this is Lancer, one of Oriko's closest non-family friends, and we really don't want to see Kirika's girlfriend crying because she lost her emotional support servant.

Also, when we're deciding whether or not to dig, while it is technically an option, I would ask that we please not dig until we find something, no matter how deep it is. In case nobody voting today has ever had to dig a hole before, it... Can take a pretty long time to dig just a meter or two down and across, and if it's Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed we're talking about, that thing is 30~35 meters down. We would actually be here all night if we decided to dig that deep down trying to find something, and then we'd be too tired to actually do any fighting. If you're dead-set on it, I suppose I'm not in a position to refuse, but just know what that choice in particular will get you if you select it.

[X] Plan: I Am A Dwarf And I'm Digging A Hole
-[X] "What are some options we can explore for additional ways of keeping those two safe while they're fighting Sigurd?"
--[X] One of the ways is to just pop off Gae Bolg immediately; Sigurd's luck is E-rank, which means that he's either going to have to stave it off with a rune, which might result in partial success (Rho Aias, which can hold off Gungnir itself, couldn't entirely stop it), and Scathach has the God Slayer skill, which should punch through a divine magic like runes with ease. He might be able to stave off his injuries with a rune, but that means no ice, and that means his offensive abilities are immediately lowered.
--[X] You could also give her a copy of Moralltach to speedrun her way to Gram's destruction; again, his low luck means that defying destiny is mostly beyond him unless he uses another rune, so if you hit her with a Gae Bolg and Moralltach, you're going to basically stretch his capabilities thin.
-[X] Start digging
--[X] See if one of the rune users can't use Berkano to locate them instead. If possible, well, there you go. If not, then try filling the ground with small magic attacks and seeing if anything goes off.

Yeah, but she's strong enough ta rip someone's arm off, ain't she?
Funny thing is that E-rank Strength is basically supposed to be Spiderman-grade, roughly, so Nightingale is probably strong enough to pick up Eddie Hall and toss him over an entire building, and C-rank endurance means that she's basically bulletproof by normal standards. She'll be fine. Also sorry for the late vote.

Do you mean Eddie Brock? Because you're talking about Spider-man, so I assume that's who you meant, except I don't think I've ever seen Peter Parker ever rip someone's arm off; though I'm sure he could if he were sufficiently pissed.

Can you explain why this means no ice? I believe I've shown that our more accomplished servants can use multiple runes at once, unless there's something about this I'm missing that would cause Sigurd to only be able to use one at a time.

No, I just used Spiderman as an example. And I do mean Eddie Hall, former strongest man in the world.

Oh, I guess I forgot about that. In Type/Moon, one of the primary limitations of runes is that they can be combined, but they're limited to a single effect at a time for most. Maybe Sigurd hits that limitation because he wasn't summoned as a Caster? Idunno. I guess the plan still kinda works since it would take more mana and concentration, but he's got an infinite mana source and a skill that basically gives him as much concentration as he needs, so whatever.

Okay, see, I thought it had something to do with Gay Bulge itself, and not with anything Sigurd or his runes were doing. I didn't even know that limitation existed.

Actually, didn't Sigurd's sword get busted by Gungnir at one point? That mean Gae Bolg being Gungnir-lite would have some effectiveness againt it, wouldn't it?

Or am I getting him mixed up with someone else?

You are right in that Odin was the one to break it initially before it was repaired by the smith Regin. However, no mentions are made about Gungnir specifically doing it, and Gae Bolg is a derivative of Gungnir, so maybe it would partially work?

Gram was broken by Odin during a fight between Sigurd's ancestor Sigmund and some other guy named Lyngvi. Now, while I can't find any Norse or Scandinavian sources that say how or what Odin used to break Gram, in Wagner's der Ring Des Nibelungen, Odin uses Gungnir to break Gram. Now, take this with a grain of salt, since this is an opera (as in, it's a fictional retelling of the events described therein) written centuries after the stories it purports to be displaying, and Wagner does take his liberties in adapting the story to an operatic setting. It would be like trying to argue for something which Tolkien doesn't mention in The Lord of the Rings by using the Peter Jackson film versions as your source.

But, if you're willing to take that, then there you go. A source which says that Odin used Gungnir to break Gram.

But also, we have Assassin and her Sword Breaker to deal with Gram. We just need to come up with a way for Lancer not to die, not another entire way to break Gram and defeat Sigurd.
