Day 28 Chapter 20
[X] Plan: Continue To Denote That This Is Not A Good Thing

You and Scáthach take a look as Kazumi shows you her right ear, previously hidden underneath her short black hair. Sure enough, you can see the black Grief marks. In fact, almost her entire right ear is black, and it trails down the side of her neck like a few loose strands of hair; if she hadn't parted her hair to show you, you might not have known that was her ear against the natural colour of her hair.

"Goodness, master," Scáthach says. "That… Does not look healthy."

"Doesn't it?" Kazumi sounds nervous. "What should I do? Can it be cleaned up like normal, or am I…?"

"It's fine," you say. "Just tap a Grief Seed to it, and you'll be fine."

"Is that what you did?"

"This does not seem like such a good idea, if it's having such a detrimental effect on your bodies' wellbeing." You'll take Scáthach's complaint a bit more seriously in light of what happened to you. "Are you sure you should be experimenting like this if it's going to be slowly corrupting your bodies?"

As you consider Scáthach's question, Kazumi reaches into her pocket for a Grief Seed. Tapping it to her Soul Gem, you watch as the blackness is slowly drained from her ear, returning it and the surrounding flesh to its previous cream colour. You give Kazumi a nudge, and say "You should probably have Nurse Ortensia take a look at your ear."

"At this point, I really do not know anymore. Maybe it is more dangerous than I've given it credit for. But we're not dead yet." Your response to Scáthach's question leaves her staring at you incredulously. Hastily, you add "That said, it would probably be a good idea for Kazumi and I not to practice this sort of thing without at least a Grief Seed nearby." Your head tilts towards where Nurse Ortensia is seated, and you add "Having someone on hand who can take a look at us afterwards would also be a good idea."

"An even better one would be to simply not do this, if it's as dangerous as it appears to be," Scáthach says. "But I suppose you girls have made a habit for yourselves out of being incorrigible. If even your own father cannot convince you to keep yourself safe, what hope do I have?"

"I really don't like letting him down like this," you say. "But I wanted to do this to see what my safe limits were. I wouldn't have kept going if what I was doing looked or felt dangerous to me."

Scáthach gestures to her master's ear, and to your arm. "Your skin turning black from your experiments seems rather dangerous to me," she says. "Especially so when you consider how infested with Grief this city already is. What if you had witched out from the start?"

At this point, a simple "But I didn't," doesn't feel like enough to convince anyone; not even yourself at this point. "I know what I did was risky, and I know I'm going to face some punishment for it. But it's something I wanted to do, to test my limits. Now, I know what they are."

Again, Scáthach eyes you incredulously. "You say that, but I know your type," she says. "You haven't hit your limit, and we both know it. No matter what you say, or what you feel right now, sooner or later you'll get the urge to experiment again. I'm not your parent, so all I can do is hope that you'll continue to remain safe and respect your limits when you finally find them."

Scáthach may not be your parent, but Archer is, so while she and Kazumi head over to Nurse Ortensia so Kazumi can be checked out, you return to Archer. "All right, I'll take to you soon," he says into your phone as you approach, before hanging up and turning to you. "Your mother and I are going to be have a little chat with you when we get back to Oriko's mansion," he says. You are not looking forward to that conversation.

"Now, what did you need from me?" Archer asks. "Just your phone back? Or was there something else?"

"Yeah, mostly just my phone back." Silently, Archer nods his head, and hands you back your phone. "I, um… I just wanted to apologise," you say, "For making you and mom worry about me."

"Save the apology," Archer replies. "I appreciate it, but saying you're sorry now won't get you out of being grounded once this is over."

"I know." You hang your head. "But I still wanted to apologise."

Archer is silent, and you see conflicting emotions warring in his eyes. He's your father, and he loves you, and he's glad that you're safe; but he's also furious at you for putting yourself in danger, and is doing all he can to keep from flying off the handle at you. No doubt he's saving his outburst for when you've returned to Oriko's mansion and he won't be making a scene by yelling at you. "Were you going to call Rin?" Archer asks, breaking the silence that had come over him. "You should do that now if you wanted to speak with her about the Third Magic."

"Right," you say. "I'll do that, and if there's nothing else you or Kirika need to take care of, we can head back after I'm done."

"I'll speak with Oriko about giving us her key to get in," Archer says. "She might want to stay a while longer, depending on how her work with Niko and the servants is coming along. So if she's planning on staying, we'll need a key to get in if we don't want to disturb Minako while she's working."

Even if he doesn't have any qualms about disturbing mom so the two of them can lecture you.

You take your phone with you as you and Archer part ways, and you wait until he's a suitable distance away – you have a feeling things are going to be awkward between you and Archer, at least until he's done lecturing you – before dialling.

*Ring*

"Akemi?"
Tohsaka-san's voice comes through the other end. "What's up? Is Archer done with you guys yet?"

"We're about to head back to Oriko's mansion," you say to Tohsaka-san. "He's just collecting Oriko and Kirika, and we'll be heading back as soon as I get off the phone with you." You can imagine Tohsaka-san going "Okay, and then what?" but she remains silent, allowing you to say "Listen, earlier today I was talking to the Incubator, and something came up. To make a long story short, Juubey mentioned that a girl by the name of Einzbern had once made a contract with them, and that her wish was to materialise the soul. Archer said that's something called the 'Third Magic', and said I should ask you or Matou Sakura about it if I wanted to know more."

You hear a deep sigh coming from Tohsaka-san. You've stumbled across something big, it would seem. "All right, has anyone ever grilled you on what the distinction is between magecraft and magic before?" she asks. "Someone has to, they must have. Anyway, 'magic' under the system that I and every other mage uses, is used to describe… Well, you'd probably call them 'miracles'. There's very few true magics, and all of them are closely guarded secrets among those of us who can use them. My instructor Zelretch, for example, is the owner of the Second Magic, and even though I've been his personal student for over half a decade now, he still hasn't fully shared all the secrets of the Second Magic with me. That's how closely-guarded this stuff is kept by its owners."

"So, I would imagine this means the Einzberns are the 'owners' of the Third magic, then?"

"Yes and no." Tohsaka-san's words confuse you; what else is new? "The Einzberns are the original owners of the Third Magic, but they lost it almost a thousand years, and have been trying to reclaim it ever since. Up until, well, literally right now, the secret of how they originally acquired the Third Magic was a mystery, but if what you're saying is true, then one of them either stole the Third Magic from the Incubators and claimed it as their own, or the Einzbern that wished for it went on to become the founder of the Einzberns. Either way, for your girls' sake I'd recommend keeping mum about this. Your whole city's on thin ice as it is for all the crap that keeps happening there; coming out and saying that your system is the root of the Third Magic would have god knows how many mages swarming in to try and claim it for themselves, since apparently it's no longer as exclusive as they've all thought."

You nod your head, even knowing that Tohsaka-san can't see you; "And we wouldn't want to give them any more ammunition to cause a scene here," you say. "I understand."

"No, I don't actually think you do," Tohsaka-san says. "I mean, yes, academically you understand the risks involved, but I don't think you understand, on a personal level, just how big what you've told me is. Before they died out, the Einzberns spent almost a thousand years trying to reclaim the Third magic. The secret to how they originally obtained it has been lost for just as long. This would rock the foundation of mage society to its core if people were to find out that you could just casually wish for the ability to use one of the true magics."

"I'll keep quiet about this," you say, when a thought strikes you. "Um, so listen… Illya is Archer's sister, right? So… Would it be okay to tell her?"

"Huh? Oh, yeah, sure, go right ahead," Tohsaka-san says. "I mean, she might get mad knowing that her entire family's legacy was right under their noses this entire time, but she'll also appreciate finally knowing what the Einzberns did to achieve the Third Magic in the first place. Just, you know, be careful about how you say it. I don't want her thinking that you're, like, holding it over her head that your system can do what her fmaily's spent a thousand years trying and failing to reclaim."

"I wouldn't think of wording it like that in the first place," you say. Illya is, even though you've never met her and she doesn't know you exist, still your aunt. She's still family. You don't want her first impression of you to be a negative one. Whenever you finally are able to meet, that is. "I would just be glad to finally meet her, and to have something to say to her that isn't just shocking her with my existence."

"I know. But if you're not careful with how you say it, you still might end up shocking her."

You see Archer, with both Oriko and Kirika in tow, motioning for you to join him. "I should probably get going now," you say to Tohsaka-san. "Dad's got Oriko and Kirika with him, and it looks like they're all ready to take off. Thank you for taking the time to speak with me."

"No problem," Tohsaka-san replies. "Stay safe, Akemi, and tell your dad to take care. Lord knows he needs someone smart like Minako around to keep his dumb ass in line." Tohsaka-san clicks her tongue, and she adds "I still cannot believe he was ever stupid enough to say shit like 'people die when they are killed'? Can you believe that? Who even says something that stupid? I mean, I'm not much better; 'the Archer class is really made up of archers'? Really, past me? Is that the best you can do?"

You can't help but laugh. "We'll all do our best to keep our own Emiya Shirous in line," you say. "Take care, Tohsaka-san."

When you return to Oriko's mansion,
[Homura] What do you say to defend your actions to your parents?
[Archer] What do you and Minako have to say to Homura for her actions?

Not a whole lot to say about this one. I tried to have Rin's explanation stay at a surface-level, layman's explanation to avoid confusing the hell out of Homura, but if I got anything wrong, please will somebody let me know. At this point it probably doesn't matter, but I'd still like to know for my own benefit. Also, I think I might have calculated Caren's age wrong, or at least her age in relation to Oriko's wrong, so I'll probably go back and correct that some time later today.

I know I asked earlier, but I probably should have waited to ask what we want to say to Archer and Minako until later, because this is now the appropriate point to be bringing that up in a vote. In fact, that's the only votable material we've got for right now. Tomorrow is obviously Homura versus her parents' big lecture, but after that...? Dinner, I guess, and maybe we settle down and either practice more with our birds, setting them up as sentries and keeping an eye on the city, that sort of thing. Maybe we call the rest of the team up and send everyone out to do patrols across the city after dinner, stuff like that. I don't know. We can work that out later.
Grief Shaman. Magical Teenager. Matured Magical Girl. An Exotic Bird Keeper. Dark Magical Girl. Technically a Mom Now.
In seriousness, my latin try goes with 'Juvenis Maga' for 'young witch'. Not sure about how good a name that is, since it doesn't blunt the blow of being a witch at all, but it's good if you're not trying to convince your parents that you didn't self-experiment with incredibly dangerous magic.
I'm sure it wasn't intentional, but when I read this, my eyes saw "young witch" before anything else, and it made me think of Young Frankenstein. I'm pretty sure that would also not work out well in Homura's favour, but at least it would be funny.

Anyway, the reason I had Homura go with "mahou josei" is because is follows the logical progression of "mahou shoujo" while not being open about the fact that we're a witch. Problem is, I don't know what the correct incorrect Latin is, and neither you nor @NMS seem to agree with the choice.

It's not that I don't agree. You asked for alternatives to eat up posts so I just kind of blurted out anything that popped in my head.

[X] Plan: Scolding
-[X] Homura: What do you say to defend your actions to your parents?
--[X] In all honesty, you've been doing experiments like this since before Walpurgisnacht. You only now just started using familiars, and honestly, it really wasn't a step up. You just did what you did before, you just gave it life this time.
--[X] Also, you are the only member of the team that does not have a definitive consistently effective attack outside of one that's such a power-guzzler that you need 4 other people to help fuel it. You kind of need this if you want to, you know, survive the fight with Sidonia.
--[X] If Minako is less angry, make a joke about her having grandkids now.
-[X] Archer: What do you and Minako have to say to Homura for her actions?
--[X] Perhaps you can ease up on her punishment after acknowledging why she did it, but that still doesn't mean that she's getting away scot-free for just risking her life like that.

If my vote comes out kinda odd an roleplay-ish, that's because I'm basically talking to myself here.

Problem is, I don't know what the correct incorrect Latin is, and neither you nor @NMS seem to agree with the choice.
The correct translation is effectively 'femina magi'.

Doesn't Homura only need Mami's Grief Dampening to use her super move?

It's not that I don't agree. You asked for alternatives to eat up posts so I just kind of blurted out anything that popped in my head.
Fair enough. That's my bad then.
The correct translation is effectively 'femina magi'.
So I have to ask; is that the correct translation, or is that the correct incorrect translation? Because I'm pretty sure that "puella magi" isn't the correct translation, but for the life of me I can't remember how or why it's incorrect, and I'd like this one to match with the correct incorrectness, if that makes any sense.

I'm not talking about Finitora Freccia Maggiore, which has joined many other moves in the pile of Worf Barrages, I'm talking about Quintett Fuoco. Or, the move we used to finish off Walpy.
What about Finitore Freccia Minore? You know, the smaller one that doesn't cause us to drop dead without Grief dampening? How come people forgot about that? Sure, it's not as powerful as the Maggiore version, but it doesn't kill us and it's reasonably powerful. Or was that not good enough because it's not equivalent to an A-rank NP, or something?

Puella magi literally means 'young female magi'. Thing you might be thinking of is the fact that 'magi' isn't a Latin word. It's Persian. Magus is the proper Latin word.

I don't think it ever actually worked in a significant fashion after the first fake-witch fight. I mean, it might have, but I don't remember it doing anything like that outside of 'it hits an opponent, covers them in ice, they break out, it ultimately amounted to nothing'. I'm definitely okay with being proven wrong, though. And also, Sidonia specializes in fire. Fire specifically stated to be able to work against our ice. And we're planning a direct battle against her. Not fun.

Sorry if I sound like an asshole, not in a good mood today.

I don't know if I could prove you right or wrong, because I don't actually recall us ever using it at all. You're probably thinking of our regular ice arrows, which are really only as strong as you'd expect from a regular arrow, except with ice.

Day 28 Chapter 21
[X] Plan: Scolding

The train ride back into Shirome, and the twenty minute walk from the Shirome station to Oriko's mansion, is spent mostly in silence. Archer says nothing to you, his eyes ever-watchful. Oriko and Kirika don't speak; either their minds are locked in conversation unheard by the outside world, or they have nothing to say either. You spend the time in silence contemplating what you might think to say to your parents.

Between you and Kirika, your parents always considered you to be the well-behaved one. Sure, you got into your fair share of danger, the same as always, but there was always a reason for it; always some part of the mission. When Archer and Minako would punish Kirika for acting out, slacking off in school, spending more time thinking about Oriko than about her schoolwork, you'd always stand off to the side, agreeing with your parents that she needed to do better as you waited for them to finish lecturing her.

This time, you've gone beyond the bounds of what either of your parents were willing to consider "acceptable" levels of danger. Usually, Archer would stick up for you when Minako worried, lectured you about being safe. Not this time. This time, it's Archer who is upset with you for how you've put yourself in danger, and you know Minako is going to agree with him.

All you can do is brace yourself, hope your parents listen if they ever give you a chance to explain yourself, and pray to a God you aren't sure you believe in that you'll be allowed to see Madoka again before your twentieth birthday.

Oriko is silent as she unlocks the front gate, and the short, few-seconds walk from the front gate to the front door feels like an eternity. Is this how an inmate on death row would feel as they're on their way to being executed? That might be overly-dramatic of you, but the overbearing silence as everyone takes off their shoes does nothing to lighten the mood.

You see Minako standing in the foyer as you enter, arms crossed over her chest. She looks at the four of you, saying in a stern voice "Oriko, Kirika, go to your room, now."

"Mom, this isn't even our house,' Kirika tries to say. "You can't-"

"Dearest." Oriko rests her hand on Kirika's shoulder. As much as you appreciate Kirika's attempt to stand by your side, you know you have to face this alone. "Let's leave them be."

Defeated, Kirika hangs her head and agrees. "I'll see you later, sis," she says, turning to follow Oriko as the pair leave up the main stairs. Behind them, you hear the invisible footfalls of Lancer, herding her master up the stairs so as not to disturb you.

Now, it's just you and your parents. They don't need to say anything for you to know just how badly you've disappointed them, putting yourself in danger like this. You'd almost rather be facing down Sidonia than have to be yelled at by your parents. At least you wouldn't feel bad about disappointing her. Archer passes you, and in silence, he and Minako walk you into the kitchen, gesturing for you o take a seat at the table. They do not sit. Several seconds pass in further silence, until- "Do you have any idea how dangerous what you did today was?"

Archer is the one leading the charge today. He's always stood by you when you put yourself in danger before, so the fact that he's the one voicing his concern says more than anything he could actually lecture you with.

"I do."

"Then why did you do it?" Archer asks. "If you knew how dangerous it was, then why did you do it? You could have died, Homura. Is that what you want? Were you trying to get yourself killed? Do you hate us that much?"

"No, dad, I-"

"Do you think your mother and I would have been happy if you'd died? If you'd become a witch because you were too stupid not to meddle in something you shouldn't have? What would we have done if we'd lost you?"

"But I didn't-"

"You didn't think." Now it's your mother's turn to speak. You've never heard her sound so upset before, not even when she's scolded Kirika in the past or worried about you being in danger before. "You didn't think about the risks involved. You didn't think about what would happen if things had gone wrong. You didn't about how we'd feel if we had to bury our daughter." She's shaking, and her voice is cracking. She's trying to hard not to cry. "Archer told me about your… Looping," she says. "I don't know how many times you've had to rest the past, and I can't possibly imagine how hard that must have been for you. But I know… I know he said that Kirika's died in a lot of them, and I…"

Minako's hands tremble at her sides as she fails to keep herself composed. "How many times have I already lost one daughter? I don't want to lose you too!"

"I don't know what it's like to lose a child," Archer says. "But I know what it feels like to lose a parent. I can't imagine losing a child would feel any better, or be any easier." As Minako falls to her knees, just narrowly avoiding hitting her head on the table as she comes down and wraps her arms around you, Archer leans in, comforting her as she holds onto you for dear life. "Please, Homura, don't ever do something like that again. If it were to go wrong, and you…" Archer's words fail him. "We love you, Homura. We don't want to see you putting yourself in any more danger than you already have to."

It takes a long time for the words "I know," to leave your mouth. "I'm… Very sorry for making you both worry about me this much. But I…"

"The truth is, I've been doing experiments of this nature since at least before Walpurgisnacht," you say. "Not so much with making my Grief into familiars, but I've been experimenting with Inguz's applications; like that Grief shot, or my wings. I thought I had a decent grasp on what the limits of my Inguz rune were to the point where I'd know if I was pushing them too far or if I was going to be in danger."

Archer stares at you. "Do you think that makes it sound any better?" he asks, "Telling us that you've been doing this for over a year now? What if something had happened?"

"You knew when I was experimenting with Inguz before," you say to Archer. "You never said anything before."

"Because you weren't trying to take your Grief and cram it into a familiar before," Archer replies. "Gandr shots are well-documented applications for using curses like Grief; there's lots of theory and practice to fall back on, and I know Rin gave you some instruction once she'd found out you were trying to do that. The wings… I'll admit, I was iffy on those, too, but those seemed dangerous because of how painful you said they are to manifest and because you could get seriously hurt if you'd fallen while you were flying. But this-"

"There's plenty of theory and practice to fall back on for making familiars as well, isn't there?" you respond. "Lancer and Assassin can both make familiars. Scáthach can make familiars, and she was watching over me and giving me instruction. McRemitz-san, Tohsaka-san, and Matou Sakura can all make familiars. Why is it so much different when I try?"

"Because you're trying to make familiars out of Grief, like a witch would," Archer says. "Having Scáthach give you instructions when she turned into a witch herself isn't helping your argument. Add to the fact that you're apparently a witch now yourself, and how else am I supposed to feel when you tell me what you've been up to?"

"I told you, dad, I only count as a witch because the Incubators don't have a better word for a puella magi that can manipulate their Grief like I can."

"I know that!" You recoil as Archer yells at you, taking several steps backwards. Only after you do that, does he realise that he's just snapped at you. "I know that," he says, in a much calmer tone than before. "Objectively, I know you aren't a witch in the way I'm imagining. Objectively, I know you knew what your limits were, and you're safe, and nothing actually happened. But you don't understand, Homura. You don't understand how it feels, as a parent, to hear your daughter tell you that she's now the same as the very things she's supposed to fight. I got scared. I got scared that I was going to lose you. That we, this family, was going to lose you. You're a part of this family too, Homura, and if we'd lost you… We'd just never be complete again."

"I know," you say again. "I'm sorry for making you both worry about me. But I knew the limits of what I was doing, I had someone watching over me to stop me if things looked like they'd turn out poorly, and I…"You need a moment to let your lungs catch up with your tongue. Minako is still holding you tightly, pinning your arms against your side as she wraps hers around you, refusing to let you go as she silently sobs into your shoulder.

"I'm at a severe disadvantage in this fight," you finally say. "I'm weaker than the rest of the team, and if we're going to survive going into the fight on the first, then I'll need some way to tip my personal scales in our team's favour. I don't have a powerful move that's available to me, not without it burning through so much mana it'll kill me without taking the proper precautions, so I thought that if I couldn't come up with a stronger weapon based on the tools I had available, then I could at least make myself useful in another way. This seemed like a good way to do that, and a natural extension of what I could already do."

There's not much you can do with your arms pinned against your side, but you can still lean down, and give your mother a kiss on the top of her head. "I'm safe, mom," you say to her. "I'm safe."

Convinced that you aren't going to leave her - leave this family – any time soon, Minako finally relents. She lets go of you, and with support from Archer, gets back up, but not before giving you a hug and a kiss on the cheek as she goes. "I could show them to you," you say. "My familiars." Seeing that your mom is doing better, you chance to make a little lighter of the situation, adding "I guess, since I'm making them out of my own Grief, that kind of makes them my kids? I guess? If you wanted to-"

"Oh, sweetie, you're too young to be a mother," Minako says. "Trust me, you don't want to be a mother at your age. You aren't ready for it." Minako gives you another hug – at this point, you're unsure if she needs the physical contact in order to convince herself that you're still here, or if your mom is just like this because she gets affectionate when she's emotional – and says "I'll support you all the way when you and Madoka are old enough to have kids, but for right now, just promise me that you'll wait."

Under her breath, Minako adds what sounds suspiciously like "Not like your sister and Oriko."

This conversation's gotten out of hand if you'v emoved on from being scolded to being reminded to wait until you're older before being intimate.
"I promise," you say. "Now, if you'll excuse me-"

"Don't think you're getting away from us that easy, young lady." Damnit. You almost thought you'd had your parents. "Now…" Archer sighs, running a hand through his hair as he stares at you. "You're not walking away from this unscathed, believe me. I was serious when I said you'd be getting some serious punishment." Here it comes… "But, in light of what you've told us, that you had things more under control than I realised, and that you were looking for a way to make yourself less of a weight in the coming fight, I guess I could go a little easier on you than I'd initially planned-"

"Archer!" Minako almost sounds shocked. "You're really going to let her off that easy? After the scare she put us through?"

"No," Archer says to Minako. "She's still getting punished. But at this point, I don't think grounding her until she's twenty is going to be any more effective than if we give her a lighter sentence. She knows the way she scared us was wrong, and as much as I hate to admit it – because it gave me a heart attack too when she told me – she had things more under control than we thought the first time she said anything."

"That said, you're still going to be punished." This time, Archer speaks to you directly. He looks over at Minako, and says to you "Give us a few moments. We need to talk about what your punishment is going to be."

You nod your head, and as you walk out of the kitchen, all you can do is pray. Pray that you'll be allowed out of the house before you're twenty. Pray that you'll get to see Madoka again. Pray that they go easy on you.

Eventually, Archer and Minako beckon you back into the kitchen for judgement. Archer's arms are crossed over his chest, and Minako's hands are planted on her hips. Stern looks occupy both of their faces. "Frankly, I think grounding you until you graduate junior high is pretty light compared to what Minako and I were originally thinking," Archer says. He looks over to Minako, who nods her head approvingly, if not somewhat hesitantly. "If – and let me be perfectly clear, Homura, this is an exceptionally large if – you stay on your absolute best behaviour, we might consider lightening up around the holidays."

[ ] Wat do?

I think I owe you guys an apology. You wanted to try something new, you succeeded, and for how hard people are coming down on Homura I bet you feel like I"m trying to tell you it's not worth it and discourage you from trying new things in the future. If I've given that impression, then I apologise, because that's not the case. I like that you were actually willing to try something new, and aren't just saying "Well we've tried (thing) before and it didn't work, so what's the point?" But, at the same time, if you're trying something that looks dangerous, or that could have been dangerous had things not gone in our favour, I also think it's appropriate for the world and the people around you to reflect that. Homura did something dangerous, and for as cool as I think it is that you're trying new things, I don't think the world would just let her off easy after she comes out saying "Hey, so I did a thing and now I'm a witch".

Anyway, rant over, now it's time to figure out what we want to do about dinner and afterwards. Are we planning on staying home after this? Do we want to call the team up and try to set up a few patrols (we don't all have to be together to coordinate patrols, especially if we're patrolling in different areas)? Do we go out wandering and try to set our familiars up as static emplacements we can watch over through the eyes on our phone? Try to argue our case for an even lighter punishment?

[X] Plan: Rest of the Night
-[X] For dinner:
--[X] What's the word on you seeing Madoka after this? Beg for time to see her if need be.
--[X] For real though, maybe show Minako your familiars. They are extremely cute.
--[X] What's the deal with airplane food? How has Minako's day been going on so far? Anything happen at her job?
-[X] Otherwise:
--[X] Attempt to place your familairs in key points as static emplacements and some possible fodder when Sidonia comes.
--[X] Perhaps get some advice from others to try and come up with new familiar types; good as the birds are, they aren't exactly meant for static emplacements.

Not much, but there's not much to be done. Somewhat late, but that's because dinner arrived the moment I saw the update and I took a small nap afterwards.

Not much, but there's not much to be done.
I don't suppose that, while we're getting this advice, we could also get some dinner conversation topics?

I've never thought Seinfeld (the comedian) was funny, but a while back, a friend of mine had a dream where he ran into me on the street, and I was ignoring him in favour of muttering the entire script to Bee Movie under my breath. Ever since then, I've been randomly texting him "Do you like jazz?" to keep him on his toes.

Day 28 Chapter 22
[X] Plan: Rest of the Night (part 1)

"I hope nobody minds, but I was thinking I'd order a couple of pizzas for dinner tonight."

Archer's decision comes as a surprise, because for as long as you've known him, he's always preferred making fresh, home-cooked meals for the family over takeout. Heck, one of the reasons you're glad to have moved into Oriko's mansion these past few days – aside from it being a better place to keep your mother safe as long as Sidonia knows where your apartment building it – was that, farther north than the corruption of Walpurgisnacht's Grief Seed had spread, Archer could cook for you without having to worry about poisoning your mother. So to hear him say that he's going to take the quick and easy route of ordering pizzas is a shock you weren't prepared for.

"Frankly, after the scare you gave me today, I just don't have the energy to cook anything," Archer says when you ask him; "And I don't want to impose on Lancer by asking her and Oriko to cook for us when they're already doing more than I can ask for by housing us."

"Really, Archer, it's fine," Oriko says. "Lancer and I would be delighted to cook for you as long as you are our guests."

"Mhm, I dunno~" Kirika sounds uncertain; another surprise. "I'm not really in the mood for vegetarian tonight, but I don't want to ask you to cook something for me that you're not comfortable eating yourself."

"Well, what are you in the mood for, then?" Oriko asks. "I'm sure Lancer would be willing to accommodate."

"Pizza is fine." Now that your lecture is over, Minako has returned to her laptop, and only just pokes her head over the top to chime in with her order. "I've still got a lot of work to do, so something that's quick and easy and that I don't have to think about would be better for me." She groans, and runs a hand through her hair as she slumps forward in her seat. "This is just miserable… I didn't think getting a promotion would mean having to take on this much extra work."

"I'm sure Junko would have preferred to promote you under better circumstances," Archer says, running a hand up and down Minako's backside. "I'm sure she would have preferred to take over from the boss under better circumstances, too. But you're both moving up the ladder; that's still a good thing, even if it's not in the way you would have wanted. Especially since you're the only real breadwinner in the family right now."

"Well, I suppose if you're all okay with it~" Oriko's voice trails off. "It'll save Lancer and I from having to do the work, after we've both had pretty long days ourselves."

Before he even says "All right, then it's settled," Archer has his phone out. "I know Oriko wants vegetarian, but do the rest of you know what you want also? Or should I give you a few minutes?"

Kirika slides up behind Oriko, wrapping her arms around the taller girl's waist. "I'll have a hot Italian~" she purrs, and you're sure she knows exactly how devious that little smirk on her face makes her look.

Oriko's face turns bright red, and as Archer and Minako stare at the couple, Oriko gently pushes Kirika off her back. "Dearest, please, you can't talk like that in front of your parents," she says. "Besides, I'm only one-quarter Italian."

An ill-advised "That's still good enough for me," from Kirika is cut off by Minako clearing her throat, as she continues to stare at her daughter. Archer, meanwhile, despite the look on her face takes Kirika's order at face value. "All right, I'll get an Italian sausage for Kirika," he says, even though you're sure he knows exactly what Kirika really meant. You're sure Kirika is going to get her own lecture eventually. "Homura? Minako? Did either of you want anything special?"

Mom waves Archer's question off with a noncommittal "Anything's fine," and you have much the same thought. "I guess I'm fine with anything," you say. "Maybe something with chicken, I guess?"

"All right. One vegetarian, one Italian sausage, one chicken, a plain for Minako, and I guess I'll get a pepperoni for myself," Archer says, reciting everyone's orders back to them. You don't want to think that Archer's forgotten about Lancer and Berserker, but you don't see either of them have any specific preferences, either. Maybe they'll just have whatever leftovers their masters didn't finish. "I'll get that called in."

When the pizzas finally arrive, Minako puts her laptop aside and joins Archer in the kitchen to help set the table, while you, Oriko, and Kirika all file in to serve yourselves. "All right, Oriko, your vegetarian pizza's on the right over there," Minako says, directly Oriko to the open box topped with all manner of vegetables. "Kirika, yours is in that box over there, next to your father's." The kitchen clears up as Oriko and Kirika take their first couple of slices, and next you wiggle your way in to claim yours. It's on the bottom of the stack, just underneath your mom's, so once she takes hers and moves out of the way, you can take yours.

The five of you move into the dining room adjacent to the kitchen, and you're struck by how alien this feels to you; occupying the fancy dining hall of a rich girl's mansion in order to eat pizza. It's so disconcerting, like you shouldn't be using such a nice dining room to eat pizza. But hey, food is food; and if Oriko isn't complaining about it, then neither will you.

Quite the contrary; she's saying grace over it. "Lord, we know this meal is a simple one, and one not made by our hands, but we ask that You bless it all the same, that we may still receive sustenance from it, and that we may enjoy the good fortune to remain in the company of those we eat with, for they are our cherished family and friends. Amen."

As Oriko finishes, the rest of you give your own "Amen"s, and it's time to eat. You'll be the first to speak, saying to your mom "I'm glad to hear that you got a promotion," which is received by her, mouth full, with a silent grunt. "What have you been working on lately that's got you so busy?"

Minako swallows, and before reaching for her next bite says "The same stuff as always." She bites, chews, swallows, and returns to continue speaking to you in such quick motions you're afraid she might choke. "This whole mess that's going on hasn't stopped my classes any, so I've still got assignments I need to do, on top of having to take care of a bunch of work stuff that wouldn't normally be my responsibility, but is because so many people in the office are out sick. It's been a nightmare, and I can't wait for this all to be over so things can go back to normal."

"Hopefully, by this time on Wednesday, things will be," you say. Assuming there's still a city to which 'normal' can return. "Just try to hold on a little longer."

"I'll try, sweetie." You know how hard things have been for your mother these past few weeks. Hopefully, things really will go back to normal once everything is over and done with. "So, um…" Minako's gaze roams the table, unsure of where to let her eyes settle as she asks "Am I going to have to move somewhere else again tomorrow night? I know that whatever's coming, it's coming on the first, so are you all thinking of having me moved somewhere out of range while you're all…"

Her voice trails off. "We probably should move you somewhere safer," Archer says. "If Sidonia knows where our apartment is, and she knows what the four of us, plus Oriko, all look like, then it's reasonable to assume she might also know where this place is. But we haven't talked about where, or even if, we're actually going to move you. But maybe it'd be a good idea for you to visit your parents, or stay in a hotel room somewhere outside the city."

Minako hangs her head. "I see…" she says. "I guess I'll give my parents a call, see if they'd let me come visit for the night… I'm sure they'll have all sorts of questions if I show up for a visit and none of you are with me…"

Archer leans over, wrapping an arm around Minako's shoulder. "We'll come visit you after we're done, then," he says. "I'm sure they'll still ask why we didn't' show up at the same time, but at least it'll look better on us than if you just showed up by yourself with no explanation." When Minako smiles back at Archer, he asks "How about it, kids? You two up for visiting your grandma and grandpa after we're done on this first?"

"Yeah!" Kirika practically spits out a wet chunk of pizza as she wildly exclaims her enthusiasm. Almost choking, she slams her fist into the base of her throat, before excitedly asking "Can Oriko come with us? I don't think grandma and grandpa have gotten to meet her yet. Please please please can she come with us?"

"Your mother and I will have to talk it over after dinner," Archer says. "But I'm sure it'll be fine if Oriko comes with us, as long as that's what she wants to do." Archer looks over at Oriko, adding "You know you're always welcome to come if you'd like to, but I'd understand if you'd rather spend the time with your own family instead."

"That's fine," Oriko says. "I'd hate to impose if it's going to be a family visit."

"But I told grandma and grandpa I'd introduce you the next time we saw them," Kirika pleads. "Come on, Oriko, you wouldn't be imposing. They'd love to meet you; I know it!"

Oriko, looking put upon and caught between Kirika and your parents, says nothing, save for a noncommittal "We'll see, dearest."

That leaves you to bring up a point that's been bouncing around inside your head ever since your parents doled out your punishment. "Um… What about Madoka?" you ask. "What are the chances that I could see her again, after this is all over?"

You never get to hear your parents' response, because the sound of Kirika's laughter fills your ears first. "Are you nuts, sis?" she asks. "You really think mom and dad are gonna let you see Pinkie when you're supposed to be grounded?" You and Oriko both give Kirika disapproving looks, but she doesn't stop. "Like, not to be mean or anything, but do you really not remember when mom grounded me last year 'cause she found out I'd be skipping school? She made me come straight home and wouldn't let me go out and help with the team, or see Oriko, or do anything fun, until I'd caught up on all the schoolwork I'd skipped out on. That was before Walpurgisnacht, too. You think mom's gonna let you see Pinkie when she wouldn't let me see Oriko? You're lucky mom and dad aren't gonna start the clock until after we've beaten Sidonia."

You look to your parents with pleading eyes, but- "Kirika's right," Minako says. "You're lucky Archer and I are still giving you today and tomorrow to do whatever you need to. But as soon as this mess is over with, you're grounded." Her tone softens, and she adds "Don't worry, you'll still get to see Madoka and your other friends at school."

"But I-"

"Will just have to learn to deal with it," Archer says. "That's the whole point of punishing you, Homura. It's not punishment if we make exceptions and allow you to see your friends." Before you can make any further protests, Archer adds "We'll also be taking your phone away from you, and you'd better hope I don't catch you trying to use telepathy to talk to anyone but me or your sister."

Minako nods her head; "And Kirika," she says, addressing your older sister, "If you end up having to move back in with us if Oriko's uncle disowns her-" The mere mention of that occurring causes a shadow to fall on the dinner table. "- then Homura's not allowed to use your Wii."

Kirika, who was looking so proud of herself earlier for having been grounded before you and knowing what to expect, suddenly looks deflated. You know she enjoys spending time with you if she's not around during the week, so for her, this must almost feel like she's the one being punished. Archer and Minako look to each other, as if silently reconsidering their decision, and Minako says "If the only times during the week that you and Homura get to see each other is on the weekends, we'll reconsider. I don't want to punish your sister because of something you did, and I know the weekends were usually the only time you two got to see each other before all this started."

"But that'll change if Kirika has to move back in with us," Archer adds, before turning to Minako and asking her "What about their team obligations? Should we not let Homura go out with the rest of her team after this?"

"Unless it's something really important, I think she should be staying home,' Minako says. "I know she's got an important job to do out there, but it won't feel like a punishment if we're letting her go out and see her friends each night." She turns to you, and adds "So unless it's something really important – and for all our sakes, I hope something this important doesn't come around ever again – you're staying home instead of going out with the others."

"Tomoe-san and I will take care of things while you're gone," Oriko says. "So don't fret. We'll keep Mitakihara in good hands."

"We're being harsh on you because we love you," Archer says. "We don't want you to scare us with something that dangerous again."

"I understand," you say. You'll try to argue your case for being allowed to see Madoka again later, but as things stand now, the results aren't looking good. You remember when Kirika was grounded, how much it hurt her not being allowed to see Oriko. You'll feel the same way, too. "I'll do better next time."

"That's my girl," Archer says. "Like I said, come the holidays Minako and I will consider lightening your punishment if you've been on your best behaviour. So maybe you'll still get to spend Christmas with Madoka if you're good." Archer smiles, but with his fingers coated in a thin layer of grease he neglects to reach his hand over to tousle your hair. "Now eat up. Your pizza's going to get cold if you sit there staring at it instead of eating."

[ ] Wat do?

I'm not expecting much of anything from this vote, since there's still the half of the previous vote that I need to address. I'm mostly looking for, based on what was discussed here, is if there's anything we'd like to either change or add to the previous vote. Maybe it's something else we'd like to do based on what shows up here, maybe it's something in Archer's perspective that he'd like to address with Minako regarding Homura's punishment, stuff like that. Let me know either way, obviously, so I'm not stuck sitting here wondering what's up.

Well...at least Homura still has her laptop to technically email people. But I wouldn't encourage her to push her luck in that regard.

EDIT: That said, I would still appreciate if @PlaguePaladin, @NMS, and @K4lepo would help to fill out the last four posts before the page turn.
Although I don't have a lot to talk about, I have some ideas. Was initially going to guess the girls' fetishes but that got way too weird and straddled a few lines, so instead, what D&D race do you think everyone would be? I personally mark Homura down as an elf (aloof, unusual magic powers, everyone misunderstands how she's supposed to be used in a story), Kirika as a dwarf (smol but will commit murder in the name of her ideals), Mami as a half-elf (genial until the end, surprisingly more of a dick than most people might think, hated for odd reasons), Kyouko as a half-orc (unending 'fuck you' energy, a lot smarter and more dignified than most people give her credit for), Oriko as a Firbolg (stronk and powerful magic, darker history than she initially seems to have), and Madoka as an Aasimar (why are they given so much power), or a Halfling if we're going for their vibes (nice, genial, more powerful than given credit for, just overall a good person).

Idunno, I got bored halfway through. I can't think of anything.

Indeed, for very few remember that Archer is a ghost and can watch Homura without her knowledge. Actually that makes me think; if Artoria's body was picked up by the Counter Force and she can't astralize because she's a living Servant... then why the hell can Archer astralize? The Nasuverse gives me conniptions, man.

Homura needs her laptop to do schoolwork. The object is to punish Homura so she learns her lesson, not to make doing her schoolwork actively more challenging for her. Now, I know what you're both going to say, that Homura doesn't technically need her laptop for schoolwork and that she could probably do her assignments with paper and pen if she needed to, but I counter with the fact that we see the girls using laptops in class, and would like to remind you of how much shit the fanbase gave that one girl in their class for not having one. I imagine there's some sort of online component to their classes that all-but-requires a laptop, or that the school prefers online submissions for assignments.

Then again, I suppose Homura could still technically keep in touch with her friends through class/school messaging boards, and she'd probably be okay to do that without getting in trouble. So that might be an out for her to consider; or it might be an avenue for Archer and Minako to consider paying closer attention to.
what D&D race do you think everyone would be?
I'll give you elf for Homura, and since I'm not really familiar with the stereotypes of each race I can't say whether you'd be right for most of them, but I feel like Kirika would want to be a tiefling. Why be a dwarf when she could be the edgy attention-whore race? Or maybe she'd be a dark elf, same reasons. Or whatever the fuck they call them nowadays; dark elf, drow, night elf, whatever the really edgy one is.

Sayaka and Hitomi are regular humans, or maybe variant humans if they're feeling adventurous.
Actually that makes me think; if Artoria's body was picked up by the Counter Force and she can't astralize because she's a living Servant... then why the hell can Archer astralize? The Nasuverse gives me conniptions, man.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say it's for narrative reasons and not mechanical ones. Archer can go invisible because it's in his nature to be a sarcastic dick, and being able to appear out of nowhere to throw shade is totally in-character for him. Seibah doesn't get that because it wouldn't be nearly as interesting, narratively, for her to turn invisible. On a more serious note, it's probably because Seibah needs an excuse to stay close to Shirou since she's one of the main heroines.
Was initially going to guess the girls' fetishes but that got way too weird and straddled a few lines
I mean, I'm up for it if you're up for it. I'm sure there's ways to word things so they don't cross any lines.
Maybe throw in a comment that Homura isn't allowed to use her familiars as messenger pigeons?
I feel like the punishment would be to just not make her familiars at all. For obvious reasons.
