Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

That is my bad. Still, maybe we should send her over there with a hypnosis tool so that they can get them out of the way? Idunno. In this case, sending Kirika to school might still be a good idea. Also, you were reading it right, I just got confused for a bit.
Then let's get unambiguous. Of the following, who should go to school, and who should skip?
Homura
Sayaka
Hitomi
Kyouko
Oriko
Kirika
Caren
Because I'm still kind of confused, since you want Homura and Caren to skip in the vote, but your above wording has me feeling less than confident, given your own expressed confusion.

Sorry, am a bit dazed, working on my own stuff right now. Of the following those who should skip are Homura, Oriko, and Caren. Those are the ones that we actually need, since they'll be speaking with Niko. I just got confused about Caren because I forgot why she needs to come over and speak to Niko.

Day 28 Chapter 2
[X] Decide to skip school
-[X] Ask Oriko and Nurse Ortensia to skip school with you as well, so they can speak to Kanna Niko, unless they think they have anything left to do at school

"That being said, Akemi-san, I leave it to you to decide the best course of action for us. What do you think we need to do in order to best accomplish our goal?"

You feel like you've been in this situation before; there's Oriko, expecting you to do the right thing; and Kirika, hoping you'll tell her to skip school. They really are the angel and devil on your shoulder, aren't they?

"The two of us, and Nurse Ortensia, are the only ones that actually need to meet with Kanna Niko," is the answer you eventually settle on. "Everyone else should continue with their day as normal." You hate to leave Hitomi to handle hypnotising the rest of the school by herself, but you're sure that Sayaka and Kyouko won't mind helping her out.

Just as long as Sayaka and Kyouko don't accidentally stumble into a repeat of what happened yesterday.

"What about me?" Kirika asks. "If Oriko's going to skip school, then so am I. It's only fair."

"No, dearest, you need to stay in school today," Oriko says. "I know you'd rather come with me, but your education is too important. I'm only skipping today because I was asked for by Niko-san. If she needs me for something important, then I can't just make her wait the whole school day for me to meet with her. But she didn't ask for you, so there's no reason for you to come with me."

"The reason is 'cause I want to~!" Kirika clings to Oriko; if she clings to her any harder, Kirika is going to melt straight into Oriko and they'll become a single person. Not that Kirika would mind, but still. "Come on, Oriko, don't abandon me like this~!"

"I'm not abandoning you, dearest," Oriko says. Her voice is rising; just slightly, but rising all the same. "But your education is important, and if you went with me you'd just be standing around wasting your time. It's not worth it." To placate her lover, Oriko leans in, and gives her another rkiss before saying "Just go to school and be patient, dearest. We'll meet each other again before you know it."

You can see it in Kirika's eyes as she accepts Oriko's kiss. It's nto enough, but it's not like she can refuse an order from Oriko, either. "Fine, "she says, with no great amount of joy in her voice. "I'll go to school. But I won't enjoy it without you."

Unfortunately, it isn't just Kirika that you have to convince: there's your mother as well; and unlike her daughter, Minako won't be so easily swayed by a few kisses from Oriko.

"Homura, are you sure that's really a good idea? I mean, you missed all of last week. Are you sure you should be skipping school again today?"

Of course, you'd rather not think about Oriko showering your mother in the same affection which she showers Kirika. That would just be weird.

"I know you're concerned about hwo much school I've already missed," you say to your mother. "It's not ideal, I know. But whatever has come up is more important in the grand scheme of things than sitting in classes for a day. Besides, Hitomi is going to be busy hypnotising the students and faculty into leaving Mitakihara, so it isn't as if there's going to be much in the way of learning that I'm actually missing out on."

"I don't know," Minako says. "I guess I'm still hesitant about the idea of you missing so much school. I just want you and Kirika to be successful, you know?"

"I know, mom," you say. "Kirika and I are both grateful for how much you care, but… This is something I have to do."

"Do you have any idea what that Kanna girl wants from Oriko and Ortensia?" Archer asks. "I'd imagine it's something important, right? Maybe something to do with Wakaba's Mystic Code?" When Minako gestures across the table for something, Archer passes it to her, before saying to you and Oriko "No, that's not right. If it were about that, she would have asked for Shizuki instead of Ortensia, wouldn't she."

"Akemi-san mentioned earlier that she recalled Niko-san talking about a computer program that would allow her to sync the feed from static sentries onto her laptop," Oriko says. "She thinks, based on that and the fact that Niko-san asked for Caren-san and myself, that she's looking to adapt that program to work with the familiars Lancer and Assassin are making."

"That would make sense, then," Archer says. His eyes scan over you and Kirika, and he asks "So, that's the three of you. I imagine Kirika is going to be tagging along as well?"

"Archer, don't encourage her," Minako says. "It's bad enough that Homura is planning on skipping school today, don't encourage Kirika too."

"Actually, Minako-san, Kirika won't be joining us," Oriko says. "Though, it was a bit of a hassle to convince her otherwise."

"But if you're okay with it, I can join them, right?" You can see it on Archer's face, how hard he's struggling to resist Kirika when she pleads like that. Like mother, like daughter, after all; and Archer already has trouble saying no to one Kure… "Come on, ple~ase? Oriko told me to go to school, but if you're okay with me going you'd tell her to let me come with you, right?"

"Kirika," Archer says. "I know in the past I've ridden you for always doing what Oriko tells you, but this is one instance where I think you should listen to your girlfriend. She just wants what's best for you. We all do; Homura, your mother, and me. We all want to see you succeed, so if Oriko told you to go to school, then you're going to school."

"But dad~!"

"No buts, Kirika." Archer's expression softens, and he reaches across the table to tousle her hair. "Listen, I know you just want to be by Oriko's side, but this is exactly the kind of thing your mom is worrying about when she tells you and Oriko to wait until you're older. You're letting Oriko be a distraction form your schoolwork, and nobody – not your mom, not me, and not Oriko – wants to see you fail because you put Oriko before yourself."

"I'm sorry, Archer," Oriko says, as though she has anything to apologise for here. "I thought we'd settled the matter of Kirika going to school already, but apparently we hadn't. I should have done a better job of making things clear to her."

"You're not the one at fault, Oriko," Minako says. "Nobody blames you for not being able to rein my daughter in." But Minako's tone takes on a less sweet one as she turns to Archer, adding "Though, maybe I should blame you for mentioning it after Oriko already told her 'no'."

"Minako, that's not fair. I didn't know they'd decided to make Kirika go to school," Archer says. "I just assumed, because she's always stuck on ORiko, that the three of them had decided to let Kirika tag along. I didn't know I'd be reigniting this discussion by asking about it."

Minako sighs, and Archer reaches his hand over to stroke her backside. "I know," she says. "I know you're not at fault. I'm just worried about my girls, that's all. Homura and Kirika have both missed so much school already this month, and I know how Kirika gets, so I didn't want her to make her think she'd gotten an excuse to miss any more school either."

"I know how much you care about Homura and Kirika," Archer says. "No one is going to challenge that. Believe me. If there were any better way of getting all of this done in the time we've got left, then I wouldn't be considering letting them skip school as an option. But we don't have a lot of time left, and there's still a lot we need to get done."

Unfortunately, that's a fact for which the blame is placed solely on yourself. You had seventeen months to prepare for the next disaster, but even weeks into the current crisis you were being passive about just how serious everything was. You've lost Madoka, the Saints have lost one of their own because you failed to properly handle matters with Atalanta and her master, and you've let Sidonia get much, much farther into her plan than you should have.

Unfortunately, you just never expected that something else would come along after Walpurigsnacht. Madoka was safe, the Incubator couldn't approach her, and you had won. Peace had cost you your strength. Victory had defeated you.

But it's Kirika who leans over in her seat, wraps her arm around your shoulder, and makes you feel better about your mistakes. "Hey, are you really that sad about me not coming along?" she asks, letting the sugar-sweet, sarcastic tone of her voice do all the work. "Don't feel bad, your big sis'll be right there with you. In spirit, I mean, 'cause everyone's made it pretty obvious by now that I can't go with you, but still." Kirika leans in close, kissing you on the cheek as she says "So cheer up, sis. Everything'll be just fine."

It's not enough to make you feel better about how badly you've screwed up. But it does get a laugh out of you. "Okay, okay," you say. "Fine. I'll cheer up." Kirika gives you a big smile, and you add "Thanks, sis. I know I can always count on you to make me feel better."

"No problem."

Now, that still leaves one person left in this adventure you've got planned, but you'll leave that to "Oriko, do you think you could get in touch with Nurse Ortensia to let her know about our plans?"

"Of course, Akemi-san," Oriko replies. "I'll give her a call after breakfast."

As breakfast comes to a close, Kirika is drafted into helping Archer with the dishes. "Come on, Kirika," he says, corralling your sister to come help him when she tries to slink off with Oriko. "Since you're not doing anything else before school starts, you can help me wash the dishes. It'll be good practice for when you come back to live with us permanently."

"But dad-!"

"No buts, Kirika. You know Oriko's on thin ice with her uncle. You should be preparing for the very likely chance that she'll have to move, and if that happens you won't be able to go with her." Kirika groans, as if her complains can give Archer the power to change a future that hasn't even happened yet. "Come on, Kirika, don't be like that," Archer says. "Look, Oriko is very generous for letting you stay with her, and your mother and I greatly appreciate all she's done for you. But if Oriko has to leave because of her uncle, then I don't think her cousin will be as generous towards you as Oriko is. I mean, she's already taking on a pretty big commitment by all but adopting Oriko. Asking her to make room for you too would just be too much."

Kirika sulks, but after a passive "I know," she complies, and you head upstairs to the bathroom so you can shower and get changed before leaving.

A few minutes later, you step out of the bathroom, towel wrapped around your body; and immediately almost walk into Oriko. You don't, of course; she slips past you just as you open the door, and you narrowly miss knocking into her. "There you are, Akemi-san," Oriko says, as if she didn't know exactly where you would be exactly when she set out to find you. "I just got off the phone with Caren-san, and…"

You don't like the hesitation in Oriko's voice; "And what?"

"She said that she could send Assassin down with us, since she wouldn't be doing anything otherwise, but that she herself couldn't come." That's unfortunate. It means you'll be stuck with Assassin, but without her master to calm her down if anything were to go awry. "I tried to explain the situation to her, but, well… Caren-san made a good point. We can skip school, and the worst that happens is, God forbid, we get held back a grade. If Caren-san skips out on going in to work, she could lose her job."

"I don't know how much influence the Church had to exercise to get Caren-san that position when she's clearly unqualified for it, but I imagine they wouldn't be too happy to learn that she'd been fired; even more so if they were to learn why and realise that Caren-san has been withholding information from them in order to protect us." Oriko shakes her head, adding "I'm sorry, Akemi-san. I know having Caren-san come with us would have been preferable, but she said that she's just not in a position to go with us when it could be her job on the line."

All Oriko can say is "I'm sorry, Akemi-san. I hope that's okay with you."

Do you
[ ] Call Nurse Ortensia again
-[ ] Try your own luck convincing her to go with you
-[ ] Apologise, let her know you understand the situation on her end
-[ ] Tell her not to send Assassin; you don't want to deal with her if she won't be around to rein her in
[ ] Suck it up and accept the change in plan
-[ ] Call Kazumi to let her know about the change ahead of time
-[ ] Have Oriko call Kanna Niko to let her know about the change
-[ ] Let Kirika come along; if Nurse Ortensia isn't coming, then Kirika can come so Oriko still has someone she's close to for company
[ ] What about Archer?
--[ ] Have Archer stay behind to watch over Minako
--[ ] Have Archer come with you
---[ ] Have Archer present at the meeting with you
---[ ] Have Archer split off and take care of other business
----[ ] Have him continue yesterday's work of setting magic circles to anchor Matou Sakura's spell
----[ ] Have him continue to hypnotise as many people in Mitakihara as he can
[ ] Other (write-in)

As I was typing this, I ran headlong into reality when it came to Caren joining us. She's already not popular with the students due to her bedside manner, she's almost certainly unqualified for the position and we don't know how she obtained it, and we really don't want to give the school board an excuse to can her by asking her to not show up for work because of us. But if we really wanted to, I guess we could hypnotise the school admins to forget about all that stuff. Or we could take Assassin and be okay with that. Your choice.

[X] Plan: Un-Planned Plan
-[X] Suck it up and accept the change in plan
--[X] Just ask for Assassin, straight-up
--[X] If Kirika really wants to skip school, then she can take Archer's place while he helps set up magic circles. You leave that decision to them.
-[X] What about Archer?
--[X] Have Archer stay behind to watch over Minako

Best I got, sorry.

I don't know why you're so hard on yourself. What, do you think if you disparage your vote hard enough that someone else will come along and try to do one better? Come on, man, we both know that's not going to happen. So just stop. You're not doing your mental self any favours. If you really think you've done a bad job, then I encourage you to sit on things for a bit and come back with what you think is a better take on your vote, rather than just leaving it with a "Sorry this sucks".

Day 28 Chapter 3
[X] Plan: Un-Planned Plan (part 1)

"I know having Caren-san come with us would have been preferable, but she said that she's just not in a position to go with us when it could be her job on the line," Oriko says. "I'm sorry, Akemi-san. I hope that's okay with you."

It's almost pitiful, but you hadn't even considered the risk to Nurse Ortensia for getting her involved. She's already unpopular among the students for her bedside manner, she's unqualified for the position, and likely only got the job through less than above-water means. You don't know how many strikes she's already got against her, so even one more might be enough.

You sigh, and all you can say is "It's fine. If there's nothing we can do, then there's nothing we can do."

"I figure having Assassin with us would actually be better in the long run," Oriko says. "She's the one Niko-san actually needs to talk to, after all. Caren-san is smart, but I doubt she'd have as good an idea of what to do about Assassin's familiars as Assassin herself would." Especially since, unlike Oriko and Lancer, Nurse Ortensia and Assassin have a much less close and trusting relationship. "Besides, even if Caren-san isn't around, I trust Assassin not to harm us."

You don't know how Oriko can be so trusting of such a dangerous woman. "Really?" you ask. "Why's that?"

"Because, contrary to how they might seem, their relationship has actually been improving," Oriko says. "Besides that, Caren-san has made it very clear to Assassin that I'm not to be harmed."

Oriko can trust Assassin if she wants. You're still hesitant. "We should get moving, then," you say. "You can trust her as much as you'd like, but I'd prefer not to find out what happens if we keep Assassin waiting."

Oriko keeps her slight laughter to herself. "Very well, Akemi-san," she says. "I'll be sure to collect Lancer on our way out."

You step aside and let Oriko pass, but you still need to get dressed before you can join her. In that time, Oriko has already collected Lancer, and the two are standing by the door waiting for you. Kirika is waiting, too, but you know she's heading elsewhere today, and you can see her fidgeting as she and Oriko talk. "You know, Akemi-san, I was thinking-"

You're not concerned that Oriko was thinking of something. What concerns you is how expectantly Kirika is looking at you. Just what were those two talking about while you were getting changed? "If I'm taking Lancer with me, then perhaps… It might not be a bad idea to let Kirika stay here with Minako-san. It would allow her to stay near Berserker, if she's truly concerned about leaving him alone with Minako-san."

"I don't trust him," Kirika says. "Sure, we've all made it clear to him that mom's off limits, but like… That's his whole deal, isn't it?" You aren't going to lie; that is what Kirika's Berserker servant is most well-known for; "And I mean, not like I'm saying anything, but mom's pretty hot. Even if he's not saying anything, I'm sure he's thinking about it."

For added emphasis, Kirika grabs for her own chest, and does her best to emphasise the comparison between herself and her mother. "I know I shouldn't be jealous of my own mom, but like, when're my boobs gonna get that big?"

Oriko tilts her head down towards Kirika. "Dearest, weren't you saying a few weeks ago that the reason you don't like wearing bras is because they're too small for you?" she reminds Kirika. "You're still growing. Don't worry that sort of thing." With Kirika still unconvinced, Oriko leans down, giving her girlfriend a kiss. "Besides, even if your chest is never as big as Minako-san's, I'll still love you."

"Regardless of… That," you say to the two of them, coughing into your hand in an attempt to get the conversation back on track. "I had planned on keeping Archer behind to watch over mom. I'm sure he'll be more than enough to keep Berserker in line if he… Tries anything, not to mention the fact that he's better equipped to keep her safe if something happens than you are."

"Yeah, but if mom and dad are together, then you just know mom's gonna try to put the moves on him," Kirika says. "Especially since they haven't done it in a while 'cause mom's been stuck here. I mean, sure, she's got work she needs to do, but I'm sure Pinkie's mom'd let her take off for a quickie with dad if she asked. Or maybe dad could get under the table while she's working and-"

"For as much leeway as Kaname Junko gives her, I don't think she'll be okay with letting mom take time off work for a 'quickie'." Even the word itself feels dirty on your mouth. "I just don't see that happening. Kaname Junko is a professional. So is mom. For as… Enthusiastic as she is about dad, I just don't see her trying anything when she's at work."

"My point is, sis, we can't just leave those two alone and expect them to not fool around," Kirika says. "You know how hard of a time dad has saying no to mom."

"Actually, as much as I hate to admit it, Kirika has a point." The last thing you see before turning your head at the sound of your father's voice is Kirika's victorious smirk, aimed squarely at you. "Not about Minako and I being intimate while she's working; your mom might be enthusiastic, Kirika, but even she knows the boundaries between work and play." You don' have to turn your head to know that Kirika's victorious smirk has fallen off her face. "What Kirika is right about is having her stay here to keep Minako safe. If I go with you girls to meet up with the Saints, then I can break away, talk to Rin and Sakura for a bit, and pick up where you girls left off setting the anchor points for Sakura's spells."

That was something you had completely overlooked when you were thinking about how today should be structured, so you're glad that Archer picked up on it and is willing to take initiative on. "But if I do that, then that'll leave Minak owith only Berserker to defend her," he says. "Now, I trust Berserker to keep his hands to himself, but having Kirika with him will mean he doesn't have to radio in and wait for orders from her." Kirika nods her head, and Archer adds "Plus, I know you'd do anything to keep your mom safe, so even if I'm not there I'd still feel comfortable leaving her in your hands."

It may be for completely different reasons, but at least Archer and Kirika are in agreement with the change in plans. You look to Oriko, and to Lancer, wondering if either of them will have anything to say to either approve or reject this idea. But you doubt it. Oriko was who originally spoke to Kirika about letting Kirika stay behind to keep Minako safe.

So when you see nothing but approval on Oriko's face, that's good enough for you. "All right, we'll do that," you say. "Kirika… I know we're all okay with you staying home, but convincing mom that we all said it's okay is going to be another story altogether. So, good luck."

"Relax, sis," Kirika says. "I'll think of something to convince mom." Kirika doesn't sound as convincing as you would like her to sound; she knows just as well as you do that it's going to be a hard sell for your mother to be okay with letting her skip school. "Now, you guys get outta here. I'll figure something out to tell mom."

It's over an hour later when your group of four arrive at the main Mitakihara station. There's an eerie silence as you step out of the train car and into the station; there's nobody here. Usually, the station would be busy at this time of day, as people are getting on and off the morning rush trains to get to work or catch their change-over, but not today. The few people who are present look just as unnerved as you do. Those who are already waiting stare at you as you depart, while those who are getting off the train from Shirome stare at how empty the station is.

"Creepy," Archer says. "But, hopefully this means all the work we're putting in is paying off."

You nod your head. Yeah, hopefully," you say. "Or else the work Sidonia has been putting in is paying off for her, and this is the result."

"Let's not think like that," Oriko says. She's trying to stay positive, but you can see written on her face how difficult that is. "We haven't lost yet, and we aren't going to. Just give it a few more days, and this station will be bustling with people again, just like before." Beside her master, Lancer nods her head solemnly. She remains silent, but her support for Oriko is obvious. "Now then, Caren-san said that Assassin would be waiting for us once we arrived…"

You glance around, hoping to catch sight of Nurse Ortensia's servant before she catches sight of you and causes a scene. You spot her, standing in the corner with her arms crossed over her chest. She's dressed in the same casual clothes you always see her and her master wearing, and for once, Assassin doesn't have a miserable look on her face.

"Aífe, good morning," Archer calls out to her, drawing Assassin's attention. "You're looking… content, this morning. Did something good happen to you?"

"I don't have to sit around that cramped little schoolroom, for one," Assassin says. "What a mindless waste of time that is, when I could instead be working on literally any one of the dozen or so other projects you lot have given me." For someone who looks less upset than usual, Assassin sure doesn't sound like it. She grunts, and, as if it were possible, crosses her arms over her chest even harder than before, before saying under her breath as she turns her head away from you "Plus, I get to see my sister again…"

Clearly, it wasn't under her breath enough to go unnoticed. You see Archer and Oriko both smiling, and Archer says "Well, I'm glad to hear that you and your sister are finally starting to patch things up. I know it's been a long time coming."

"Oh, shut up, will you?" Assassin grunts. "We're not that close, not yet. I just… It's been so long since the last time we didn't hate each other. I… I don't dislike feeling this way towards her, that's all." Assassin goes red in the face as she realises what she's just said, and snaps back; "And why am I even telling you this in the first place? Come on, let's just get this meeting over with so sister and I can find somewhere to go out drinking."

"Assassin, it's barely eight in the morning," Oriko says. "I doubt you'll find any establishments of repute open this early."

Oriko's words only succeed in earning her a scowl from Assassin. "It's five o-clock somewhere in the world," she says. "Now let's go already."

Part of the problem is that I developed a pretty big chunk of the sequel with Kazumi in mind as the protagonist, but then tried to stick with keeping Homura as the face character because she was the star of the show last time, despite not having anywhere near as much in mind for her to do. Obviously, it didn't work, and I've spent every day for the past 17 months regretting my poor planning and poor execution. I know.

Eventually you'll get over the hump :/, I guess. I never cared much about Kazami, mainly because I've never read Kazami Magica, and compared to Homura who was the focus of both the anime and the prequel, a 1 mil~ words length fanfic. I simply don't feel anywhere near as invested in her compared to Archer and Homura who achieved their 'happy middle'.

The question is whether there will be a timeskip, a hyperbolic time chamber, an undiscovered savant-level talent, sudden inspiration, adderall, deus ex madoka buff, reality marble, low-power Homucifer, or something so Homura can rapidly catch up on to the level she should be at from all the training she's supposed to have been doing for the last 19 months, so she can stay at least vaguely relevant admist all the servant-level (and above) combat and actually trained Clock Tower mages, and not continue to fade into obscurity with one well-trained rune, middling reinforcement and projection abilities and gandr, available to her like a warped discount Emiya Shirou without any of his stengths. I mean shit, Homura even has limitation as an element, and she's somehow much weaker (no timestop) than she was 1.2 million words ago, which absolutely makes no sense from IC or OOC perspectives. There's far more servants involved, and thus all threats by necessity will be that much more powerful to remain threatening, and yet the MC simply isn't.

I just can't imagine as she is now to be relevant in the slightest during the endgame here, or even the lategame. Unlike in the predecessor fanfic, she's just too weak right now to be anything but a damsel for Madoka to save, or a chaff/mob killer, which I detest.

The question is whether there will be a timeskip, a hyperbolic time chamber, an undiscovered savant-level talent, sudden inspiration, adderall, deus ex madoka buff, reality marble, low-power Homucifer, or something so Homura can rapidly catch up on to the level she should be at from all the training she's supposed to have been doing for the last 19 months
So, I think I need to be a bit clearer with what I said before, so you can actually understand where I'm coming from with this one and understand what the consequences of that decision actually mean.
When I say that Kazumi was the one I originally intended to be the protagonist, I meant it. She was the one I had all the development in mind for, and it was supposed to be the mystery of who and what she was that kept her going. The only problem is, the main antagonist had sat herself down in Mitakihara, and for the specific reason why she had done that, I couldn't just up and relocate her to Asunaro where Kazumi was. Sure, she was slowly slowly besieging Asunaro and Kyubey was using that to manipulate the Saints into fighting the Quintet, but because the Quintet had been the main focus of the previous story and everyone knew what had actually happened, I was afraid that players would try to metagame an easy end to the fighting between the Quintet and the Saints if they were in Kazumi's shoes, since they would know that the lies Kyubey was feeding them were lies. So I made the decision, for those two reasons, to have Homura remain the face character, even though all of the actual character growth I had planned for the sequel was supposed to be for Kazumi.

It'll disappoint you, but I did not approach the sequel with the idea in mind that Homura was supposed to have improved, because in mind mind, she had won. She defeated Walpurgisnacht, Kyubey had been run out of the city and couldn't approach Madoka ever again, and as far as she knew there wasn't anything else on the horizon to be planning for. Yes, that means that she went into the sequel unprepared for what was going to happen, and that's a balancing mistake I've never been able to correct. But she was never supposed to have gotten stronger in the interim, and assuming as much is, I think, a big part of why you're so disappointed. The real problem is how badly I misjudged how strong everything else around her was going to be when I built them.

Another point to this that I don't think is apparent at all to people who only read the story, is Homura losing timestop. People who only read the story don't actually get any of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes, or inside my head as I'm writing, and they miss the fact that timestop, as an ability within a narrative, is great for the audience, but a nightmare for the creator. Precognition is the same, which if why I had to make antagonist Oriko less intelligent and more arrogant than protagonist Oriko, because if she made mistakes and underestimated her opponent that was the only way she could actually lose.

Timestop is un-interactive; Homura can freeze time, gank the enemy, and be done with it. That's great when you're the viewer, but if you're writing for a game and trying to make creative enemies, timestop makes that difficult, because either they can counter timestop, in which case timestop was useless to begin with, or they can't, and they don't get to do anything. The truth of the matter is, I absolutely hated writing combat for Homura in the previous story because of how powerful timestop was, and having her lose timestop was a deliberate choice on my part in order to make writing combat for her more enjoyable for me. But again, the problem is that I misjudged how powerful everything else around Homura was going to be, and so people who are read-only don't get that, and just see the mistake without understanding the choices I made which led to that being a mistake.

And for as much of the blame rests on my shoulders, I do also have to give a shoutout to my players. They were the ones who wanted to be passive and not engage with what was going on around them, and I really didn't have a plan for what to do about that. On top of that, when I made mistakes early on, there was nobody who actually spoke up to tell me that something was wrong until I was six months in and it would have been too hard to walk back so many problems. I've tried as best as I could to correct problems as they've come up, but time has proven that I'm just not good enough, and the mistakes were too deep-seated, for anything to be done about them.
I had no real idea of what I was doing in the original story, and I have no idea what I did to make it successful. I tried to do something different with the sequel, and it didn't work out the way that I wanted it to. If that doesn't appeal to you, then I can't really get offended when I've already fucked up this much.

However, all that being said, there is one point on Homura being "too weak" that I will absolutely fight you on.
I just can't imagine as she is now to be relevant in the slightest during the endgame here, or even the lategame. Unlike in the predecessor fanfic, she's just too weak right now to be anything but a damsel for Madoka to save, or a chaff/mob killer, which I detest.
The Inguz rune turns Homura from a Madoka Magica character into a Symphogear character. She can absolutely punch well above her weight class if she needs to. People just need to remember that she can use Inguz to hold hands with her teammates' mana for powerful combo moves rather than trying to use it just for Gandr shots. Gandr is good, but Inguz's real purpose is to allow Homura to BS her way into higher weight classes.

Day 28 Chapter 4
[X] Plan: Un-Planned Plan (part 2)

Rather than stand around and have nothing to do while Homura, Oriko, and Assassin deal with Kanna Niko, you've excused yourself and found an excuse to be elsewhere. At the moment, you're making your way over to the building you and the rest of your family call your home, from which the four of you are now temporarily displaced.

You just need to hold on for another few days, and then everything can go back to normal, you remind yourself as you approach the door to the upstairs residence. You knock, and wait to be let in by "Archer?"

"Rin." You greet your former master politely, giving her a slight bow as she opens the door wide enough for you to enter. "How's everything going? Homura told me yesterday that you were looking through some of the books we took from Sidonia's workshop; have you found anything new?"

Rin shakes her head. "No more than what I've already told Akemi," she says. "Which, in and of itself, is no more than what you've already found out."

"That's unfortunate," you say; though not unexpected. "What about Sakura? Is she in?"

Your eyes dart over to the corner, seeing Rider with her nose in a book just as Rin is responding with a "Yeah, she's in her room." Rider nods her head, but remains silent. "You need to speak with her about something?"

"It's about yesterday," you say; "And actually, I'd prefer to speak with both of you, if I can."

Rin looks over to Rider, and the two nod their heads with a shared, uneasy silence. Rider sets her book down and gets up, excusing herself. Your eyes can't help but wander: in your youth, you admit to finding Rider attractive; in fact, you were surrounded by women you thought were attractive back then. The you that's currently standing where you are paid them no attention, partially because half of them were trying to kill you and partially because you had other things on your mind back then, like living up to your father's legacy as a hero of justice.

"See something you like?" Rider whispers to you as she passes you. By the lack of any change in expression on her face, Rin hasn't heard. "I wouldn't mind, actually, so long as you were willing to give Sakura the same… Attention."

But your eyes don't wander towards Rider as she passes you because you're considering her over Minako; not even for a second. The fact is, your eyes wander if only to marvel at how much more beautiful Minako is than Rider.

"Sorry," you say as you reject Rider's proposition. "But I'm quite happy with the family I already have."

Rider's glasses catch the overhead light just so, obscuring her eyes from view for just a brief moment. The effect is uncanny, and made even more so when she says "All right. But if you change your mind, feel free to let me know. I know Sakura would just love to have her senpai in bed."

Rider passes you, and Rin looks on, confused. "Okay, what the heck just happened between you two?" she asks. "Were you two, like, having an entire conversation just with your eyes or something? Is that something that actually happens? 'Cause I thought that only happened in manga."

"Don't worry about it," you say to Rin. "It was nothing."

It remains nothing until Rider returns with Sakura. One look tell you that Rider hasn't said anything to Sakura about her proposition, for which you are very grateful. But things are going to be awkward between you and Rider for a while. "Rider said you wanted to speak with sister and me?" When Sakura speaks, it isn't a question. Oh, sure, it's phrased as a question, but you can hear in her voice that it's only a question for courtesy's sake.

With both sisters present, you feel comfortable getting started. "It's about yesterday," you say. "This is mostly for your benefit, Sakura, since Homura tells me that RIn was there, but the party that went out yesterday to set the anchor points for your spell was attacked midway through, and they weren't able to finish." Both sisters nod their heads; Rin's already told Sakura, it seems. "So, I came here today so that I could recruit both of you into helping me finish setting those anchor points."

"Frankly, I was going to do that whether or not you asked me to," Rin says. "I mean, sure, it's just common courtesy to wait for permission, but this is important. It's not something we can just afford to put off before nobody remembered to ask."

"Sister is right" Sakura adds. "The fact that you came here to ask us to do this just solidifies the thought that we were right to plan on heading out to finish this today. Leaving the anchoring array incomplete would just leave a bad taste in my mouth after everything, especially since I've finished all the prep work for the spell Akemi-san asked for."

"You're finished?" This is great news. "We should get started at once, in that case." You know you don't need to ask, but for propriety's sake, you ask, "Can I count on the two of you to help me?" Strictly speaking, you'll need at least one of them helping you in the first place, since you don't know the necessary magic circle for setting up anchor points to Sakura's spell.

"Of course," Sakura says. "I'd be happy to help. It's the reason I came here, after all."

"Well, I didn't come all this way here to sit on my ass while the world falls apart."

Rider doesn't have anything to contribute to the conversation. She just turns to you, smiles, and gives you that look. You know the one. You can practically hear her sizing up your dedication to Minako in your mind's ear. "What are you waiting for, senpai? Don't you want to make Sakura happy? Don't you want to make her feel like her time here was spent well?"

You have nothing to say to Rider. You'll let your disapproval speak for itself.

"All right. Well, if you change your mind, don't hesitate to speak up. Frankly, I think you're more attractive the way you are now. I certainly wouldn't mind if you decided to stray for a night or two…"

Wait a second, what the hell are you doing? Rider isn't saying anything right now. This conversation you're having with her is all in your head. You're just guessing based on subtle eye movements and glances.

Anyway, once you've gotten yourself back on track, the first order of business is coming up with a solid plan of attack. "All right," you say to Rin. "You were with Homura yesterday; how far did you get?"

Rin produces a map of Mitakihara, and points to a location on the map that's a little bit east of your current position. "We had been moving southeast along the rail lines, and the plan was to head north once we hit the river," she says. Where'd she produce it from? You have no idea. But you're glad she has it. "Once we'd gone far enough north, the plan was to loop back around southwest until we'd returned to our starting place."

Rin taps the map again, highlighting the area she indicated previously. "Unfortunately, we got stopped right about here. Two waves of mixed uglies, plus a bunch of these creepy bird things that Akemi was really freaked out about for some reason. Those managed to hold us up pretty good, and we never got to finish past this point."

"Those are called Nachtkrapp," you say to Rin. "They're massive Grief hazards; as I'm sure you figured out after seeing them in person. They've also got some kind of special property where if you look directly at them, your Grief levels spike. Fortunately, they had you with them." Now that you mention it, "How did you fare against them, actually? You don't have the same weakness to Grief that Homura and the others do, so I'm curious."

"Yeah," Rin says. "They were really freaky to see in person, and now that you say that, Akemi's behaviour back then makes sense. I didn't think I had much trouble with them. Sure, all that Grief in the air made it hard to breathe, but I didn't feel like I'd literally die just by being near them." You nod your head, and Rin continues, asking Sakura "So, what about you? You haven't had to fight any of the big creepy crawlies that're wandering around this city, have you?"

"I was there when Akemi-san and the others encountered the giant spider," Sakura says. "It was… Well, let's just say that I'm glad Akemi-san decided to withdraw when she did. It was not an experience I'd care to cherish about my stay here."

"Yeah, sorry you had to get stuck with something like that on your first outing in the city," you say to Sakura. "We'd still like to figure out what the heck that giant spider actually was, since as far as I can tell there are no giant spider monsters mentioned anywhere in Slavic folklore. Homura thinks Sidonia just wanted to make an ambush predator and let form follow function, but something about that doesn't sit quite right with me, because all of Sidonia's other familiars – at least the ones she's made since she started modelling them after monsters from Slavic folklore – have all fit the theme. All of them except that one."

"Well, if we have time, maybe we can sit down and try to figure that out later," Rin says. "But for right now, we should get moving. It's already-" Rin checks the time on her watch, and it surprised to see "It's already after eight? Geez, how long have I been up for?"

Sakura and Rider both share a laugh at Rin's exclamation. "Did you finally decide to wake up early for once in your life?"

"Ha, ha, very funny Archer." It wasn't very funny. "Actually, Sakura's the one who woke me up. If she hadn't, I'd still be sleeping right now. But someone decided that I needed to wake up at a normal hour if I was going to be useful today."

"Well, she's got a point," Rider says. "You do have bad habits when it comes to your sleep schedule." "That isn't the only place where you have bad scheduling habits," you hear Rider say through her eyes. "When was the last time you actually saw that Emiya boy? He could be with Sakura if it weren't for you, but you barely have time for him in the first place."

You really hope this train of thought won't come back to haunt you. Somehow, you're pretty sure that it will; and unfortunately, it does.

"Um, Archer… Can I talk to you about something?"

Your team of four have passed the point where Homura's team had to stop last time, and boy, is it a mess. Unmelted ice fortifications litter the streets; at least, where there's still street to be littered, because there are large, smoke-stained chunks of street that just aren't there anymore. If they haven't all been scared off or hypnotised by now, you imagine that any construction crews still in the city have just given up by this point. You can't say you'd blame them.

Rin has just passed over you and Sakura, and is inspecting what you imagine is a previously-lain anchor for structural damage. When you see her wipe her brow exaggeratedly and proclaim "Whew, it's safe," you know that everything is well, and while she's out of earshot you say "Sure, Sakura, what did you need?"

"Well, it's about you." Ah. So you were right to be worried. "More accurately, it's about the you that sister is dating. I… I know I can't sway you away from your family, but sister is so busy all the time; she barely has any time for senpai. So… Rider and I were talking, and maybe… You'd be willing to help us get senpai to break up with sister so he and I could be together?"

[Archer] Do you
-[ ] Agree to help Sakura; oh crap, how are you actually supposed to do that?
--[ ] The direct approach; talk to Rin and tell her that she, Sakura, and Shirou need to talk about this themselves
--[ ] The indirect approach; talk to Minako and try to get a woman's perspective on how to approach this
--[ ] The Archer approach; just be a dick to your younger self until he does what you want him to do
-[ ] Don't agree to help Sakura; while you sympathise with her,
--[ ] it's a matter that she, Rin, and Shirou need to talk about among themselves
--[ ] Minako would kill you if you agreed to be a homewrecker
--[ ] It's not your business who your younger self is dating

Actually, you need to talk to Minako first
[ ] Tell her that you think Rider is trying to seduce you for her master's benefit
[ ] Tell her that Sakura asked you to get her sister to break up with her boyfriend so she could date him instead
[ ] Tell her nothing; you'll just be troubling her while she's trying to work-slash-pulling her hair out over Kirika skipping school
[ ] Tell her everything, and ask for her help because you're in over your head
-[ ] Just get advice from her on how to handle the situation yourself
-[ ] Ask her to sit down and mediate things between Rin and Sakura

[Homura] After your meeting with Kanna Niko, do you
-[ ] Ask Wakaba Mirai to have another practice match so she can test her Mystic Code within Kazumi's presence
--[ ] Wakaba Mirai should be the one to fight (write-in her opponent)
--[ ] Ramesses II should be the one to fight (write-in his opponent)
-[ ] Join up with Archer's team and continue setting anchor points for Matou Sakura's spell
-[ ] Go over to Madoka's house and pay her a visit; see how she's feeling today
-[ ] There's still time; you'll be late, but you can still show up for school if you hurry

[ ] Other (write-in)

I'm not sure about the thrust behind this. Maybe it's introducing too late a problem that I should have introduced earlier; I don't know. I've been hinting from pretty early on that Rin and Shirou's relationship was rocky and that Sakura wanted Shirou so badly she was even considering going after our Archer, but maybe I shouldn't have dropped this so late in the game. It's just that we haven't really had an opportunity before for just Archer and Sakura to talk without someone else being around, and I wanted to give us something else to do while we're busy setting anchors, since that's pretty boring to just >imply in writing while nothing else is going on.

Same thing with Homura. I'll be picking back up in her perspective tomorrow for our meeting with Niko as well as whatever else we decide to do afterwards, and from there I'll probably stagger updates like I did a little while ago. Probably. It'll depend on what I get from the vote that determines whether I start from Homura's perspective or Archer's, but regardless of vote contend I'd like to start from Homura's perspective first, since the meeting is the real reason we came down here in the first place.

[X] Plan: Do Not Wreck The Home
-[X] Archer:
--[X] Don't agree to help Sakura; while you sympathise with her, it's a matter that she, Rin, and Shirou need to talk about among themselves
---[X] Definitely involve yourself in the proceedings if and when this does happen; you do not trust your past self to not be a dumbass about this
--[X] Also, Minako would kill you if you agreed to be a homewrecker
-[X] Homura:
--[X] Ask Wakaba Mirai to have another practice match so she can test her Mystic Code within Kazumi's presence
---[X] Wakaba Mirai should fight you; this is a good chance to practice your new wings, and your abilities essentially neutralize each other, so you're a perfect opportunity to blow a lot of mana on

--[ ] The Archer approach; just be a dick to your younger self until he does what you want him to do
This gave me a good laugh, lol. In reality though, he acted like this before due to the fact that it had been upwards of 50 years since he actually ever talked to anyone for any reason other than direct business (fun fact, when he told Rin he had no idea who he was, he wasn't entirely wrong), on top of the fact that he was trying to merk his past self but what too hesitant. The other options are not much better. The direct approach will definitely elicit a 'what the hell' from Sakura who was trying to be discreet about this, and Minako's solution is almost certainly going to be 'seduce the problem until it works' when it comes to love issues, which we know for a fact doesn't work on Shirou. I'm taking the route of inaction because there's not really anything Archer can do without the possibility of it blowing up in his face.

Well, whatever the reason, I thought the least Archer thing I could do in this situation would be to let a chance to insult the intelligence of Emiya Shirou slip past me, so I had to take it. Glad you found my attempt enjoyable.

Now that I think about it, if Homura can make fully functioning wings out of her grief, is it possible to move into the final stages of seeing if Homura can make Lotte, Liese, or Lillia yet? On that matter, it might be worth looking into if she can expand upon that even further, such as taking a page from dear old pops and overriding the immediate area with her grief. We know that Homulilly is miles stronger than base Homura, so much so that she can fight off a literal team of demigods, so maybe this is a way for Homura to get back into relevance power-wise.

I believe I've said this before, but I don't think Homulily would work here, or at least, not the Homulily we're used to seeing. Homura's mindset here is different, and I don't think she would turn into the same witch, or could invoke the powers of the same witch, if her mindset under doing so is as different from TV series Homura as it is now. Maybe I'm not articulating myself properly right now, and if I'm not, I'll try to come back to this at a later time with a better explanation, but if we decide to make Homura invoke her witch powers, I think she'd end up with something else other than the Homulily we know.

Day 28 Chapter 5
[X] Plan: Do Not Wreck The Home (part 1)

"Are you sure? Because I'm pretty sure Rider would be more than happy to fight both the servants you and Mikuni brought with you if I gave the word."

Your eyes dart over to the egghead table where, sans Hitomi, the smartest members of your combined teams are working together to solve an important puzzle. Kanna Niko is leaned over her laptop, while Lancer and Assassin stand over her, one on each side, as Kanna Niko explains to them the more technical aspects of her program and what she needs from them concerning their familiars. Beside Lancer, Oriko also looks on, taking notes with her phone and occasionally asking Kanna Niko questions.

You, for your part, are seated at the operations table – you're glad the Saints brought in a second table just for Kanna Niko to work on, so she and her fellow eggheads can work in peace without being distracted by whatever else is going on – and are seated across from Asami Saki and Wakaba Mirai. You've just asked Wakaba Mirai if she would be willing to undergo another test run of her Mystic Code, this time with Kazumi present in order to test how her impressive store of mana changes any of the more involved calculations that all go over your head whenever Hitomi or Oriko try to explain them to you.

"While I'm sure he would, that's quite all right," you say to Wakaba Mirai. "Besides, while I'm sure Assassin would be up for a good fight, she and Lancer have other things they came here to do."

Apparently, Assassin doesn't take very kindly to you making that decision for her. She doesn't snap at you, but she does shoot a very disapproving glare in your direction. "I would prefer you not decide things for me without speaking to me first, master of Archer," Assassin says to you. "Unfortunately, I am forced to agree with you on this. As much as I would love a good fight, especially against that one's Rider servant, I came here to get some work done."

Assassin snorts, and plants her hands on her hips. "Since I've already done the work of making these stupid familiars, there's no point in letting that effort go to waste," she says, "Especially not after you've wasted me so much already."

"So that's that," you say to Wakaba Mirai, accepting Assassin's criticisms of you while choosing not to engage her any further. She's right; you don't see a reason to dwell on that. "But I'm more than willing to have a practice fight with you. I've got something of my own that I'd like to further test, so this should be a good experience for us both."

Wakaba Mirai looks to Asami Saki, as if to seek confirmation from her. When AsamI Saki nods her head, Wakaba Mirai says "Well, if you're sure. But don't come crying to me when I beat your ass."

"Mirai, don't be rude," Asami Saki says. "There's no reason for it."

"I'm just trying to give her fair warning," Wakaba Mirai says. "She's a ranged attacker who uses ice arrows. I'm a close-range fighter who uses fire. There's no contest between us. I just don't want her to think I'm being unfair about the risks involved in fighting me."

"I'm well aware of the risks involved," you say to Wakaba Mirai. "But I'm willing to take them."

You follow Wakaba Mirai as she leads you out around to the back of the warehouse that's serving as their base. Asami Saki follows closely behind the two of you, and Kazumi goes with you as well. There wouldn't be much of a point to testing her enormous store of mana's impact on Wakaba Mirai's Mystic Code without her.

You and Wakaba Mirai take your positions at opposite ends of the training grounds.

Actually, this isn't a bad location to put up a more permanent training ground once this whole mess with Sidonia is taken care of and the Pleiades Saints have moved back into their own, permanent base of operations back in Asunaro. You'll have to remember that, assuming you can ensure that nobody else comes this way who could spy on you.

"Got any particular rules you want to attach to this?" Wakaba Mirai asks. "Or are we free to do whatever the hell we want?"

"Within reason," you reply. "Obviously, we're not trying to kill each other; we're trying to test your ability to remain adequately fuelled in combat. Obviously, if it looks like you're having trouble with that, or one of us sustains an injury that prevents us from continuing, we'll call the match off. Otherwise…?" You look over to Kazumi and Asami Saki, as if to ask them for their input.

"I'll also probably stop the match if it looks like Mirai's doing really well," Kazumi says. "We just need to know that she can keep herself going. So if it looks like she's doing a good job, there's no need to keep things going for longer than they have to, right?"

Asami Saki decides to speak up before you have the chance to. "Frankly, I think Mirai could use a chance to blow off some steam," she says. "Sure, that fight with Sakura was good for her, but I think she'd appreciate another go at it with someone else; especially if they'd offer her a different sort of challenge than Sakura did."

Considering that Kyouko's bout with Wakaba Mirai was a pure fistfight, you're sure you'll be more than capable of providing her with a different sort of challenge. "Well, I'm all ready whenever you are," Wakaba Mirai says to you. Her clothes melt away as she changes into her battle costume, and she says to you "So come on, show me what you've got."

You don't announce yourself; you let your actions speak for themselves as you take off, drawing your bow and getting off two arrows before Wakaba Mirai is ready for them. She quickly brings out her sword – you've never paid attention before because she's quite fast on the draw, but what actually happens is that Wakaba Mirai flicks a heart-tipped wand from her sleeve into her hand, and converts it into the form of a sword almost instantaneously – and brings it up, blocking your arrows before retaliating with a jet of flames.

You dodge and ready your next arrows, but Wakaba Mirai isn't giving you any time to loose them. She twists her sword, sending her flames chasing after you like a serpent. You're forced to turn, loosing your arrows into the maw of her column of fire. Your arrows explode once they've entered the column of fire, creating an explosion of steam that temporarily obscures the battlefield.

You know what to do in this situation. You quickly invoke Isa, and launch yourself into the air above the cloud of steam, searching for your target. There! As soon as you have Wakaba Mirai in your sights, you loose, sending your arrows down onto her. Your arrows impact, splashing their ice all over her arm. You see the scowl on her face as you land, and you ready another arrow for a quick follow-up shot. You take the shot.

Your second arrow lands, but the sound of its impact isn't the sound you're accustomed to hearing. It sounds softer, and when you see just what your arrow hit, you understand. Wakaba Mirai has a teddy bear wrapped around her arm by the stubbly little stumps of its arms and legs. That's already an unusual sight to see, but it gets even better – or worse; more disturbing, really – when she gives her arm a casual flick, and four jagged claws spring out of the top of the bear's head, shattering the ice encasing the stuffed armament.

"Bear claws!"

With those two simple words, Wakaba Mirai's teddy bear gauntlet springs forth. Its head detaches from the rest of its body, surging towards you on a length of black chain that's wreathed in claws. Oh good lord, you think as it hits you. Not the claws, of course. You invoke Isa and launch yourself into the air on a pillar of ice, which is quickly shattered by Wakaba Mirai's teddy bear-claw-weapon. But the realisation that "You stole that attack from Kirika!"

You quickly nock back and arrow and loose it in mid-flight, only for Wakaba Mirai to deflect it with her teddy bear armour. "I don't know what you're talking about!" she shouts, swinging her armament around and almost catching you with its mass as you land. You manage to clear the hurdle, and ready another arrow on your bow. "I came up with this attack completely on my own!"

"Then why does it look exactly like Kirika's own clawed chain attack?" you counter, before also countering with another ice arrow.

"Pure coincidence!" You don't believe Wakaba Mirai for a second, and her boast only serves to further solidify your conviction. "But I won't complain if I get to beat her younger sister with it all the same!"

Wakaba Mirai charges forward, smashing her bear claws into the concrete where you were standing, and she turns towards you with fire in her eyes as she rips her claws free, bringing with them a chunk of concrete, which she throws at you. You loose your arrow, turning the chunk of concrete into a chunk of ice, and you fling yourself into the air again as Wakaba Mirai brings her weapon around, tearing through the pillar of ice and spraying ice shards in all directions. You ready another arrow for when you land, but this time, Wakaba Mirai doesn't swing her weapon at you. Instead, she turns her sword on you, unleashing a torrent of carmine flames.

You dodge, and loose another arrow at her, but she brings up her bear claws instead. Your first arrow coats the weapon in ice, and your second arrow shatters it, but Wakaba Mirai doesn't miss a beat as she turns her flames on you again. She flicks her now-bare wrist and flings the headless teddy bear corpse from her arm, directly towards you.

You loose your arrows at the headless bear, catching it and splashing ice over the body of the bear before it can, gosh, explode all over you, or something. Wakaba Mirai taps her heel three times against the ground, and the headless, frozen bear explodes in mid-air, sending shards of ice flying out in all directions. Her flames curl around her and intercept the ice as it falls, but you are forced to take cover, raising up a barrier as shards of ice like glass rain down on your position.

That isn't all Wakaba Mirai's hell tap did; with it, she's summoned seven more teddy bears to her side. "All right, try this on for size! Bestia Refare!"

The seven teddy bears contort their bodies – it's a disturbing sight, one which you are glad you don't have time to pay attention to before Wakaba Mirai sends another torrent of flames towards you, forcing you to dodge and keep your eyes on her and her alone – and join together to form a bear. Not a teddy bear, with its cartoonish proportions, but something resembling an actual bear, only one that's been constructed from fabric and stuffing. It opens its mouth, lined with razor-sharp teeth, and lets out a silent roar from its stuffing-filled mouth as it charges you.

You're quick on the draw, readying another arrow, but the bear is just as fast. It swipes at you with its paw, which is packed with seven jagged claws, and you have to quickly break your aim in order to invoke Isa, placing a barrier between you and the bear which the bear easily tears down. But that delay has given you just enough of a lead that you can take aim, and you loose.

Your arrow makes contact with the bear's forelimb, coating it with ice, while your second pierces through the frozen limb, shattering it. You go to draw back your bow with another arrow, but the bear lunges at you again, forcing you to dodge. Wakaba Mirai swings her sword, sending a column of fire towards you as she stamps her heel against the ground.

In a flash, more teddy bears spring up from the ground, creating an impenetrable wall behind Wakaba Mirai of bears as far as your eyes can see. She points her sword in your direction, slinging more flames which force you to dodge, as one bear among her host advances, leaping to join with her massive bear and reforming the destroyed arm. The bear lets out another silent roar, and swipes at you with its reformed paw, again shattering the barrier of ice you have to quickly erect between it and you.

You launch yourself into the air on another pillar of ice as Wakaba Mirai tries to trap you in a pincer between her massive bear and her flames. It fails, and you're launched successfully into the air as her bear's paw swipes through the pillar of ice. But as you survey the most likely landing zone you realise that your options aren't looking so good. Wakaba Mirai sees it too; and she advances, positioning herself where it looks like you're about to land. You have to act fast.

You twist your body around, and loose an arrow downwards. Your shot strikes a nearby teddy bear, giving you a perfect platform to land on as the swing of Wakaba Mirai's sword misses you, decapitating the head of her frozen teddy bear instead. "You'll pay for that!" she screams, lashing out with her sword and with the bear claw strapped to her wrist, but all you have to do is leap into the air again, freeze another teddy bear on your way down, and repeat, giving you a clear path to safety as Wakaba Mirai tears through he own force to reach you.

Once you've run out of teddy bears to use as platforms, you give one final leap, loosing an arrow of ice to clear a landing zone for yourself- But Wakaba Mirai sees it coming. Her monster bear is waiting for you, and as soon as she sees the opening you've made for yourself, she readies her sword, letting flames wreathe themselves along its length.

You've got no other option.

Now's the time to use them.

This is going to hurt.

You've built up more than enough Grief exerting yourself during the course of this exercise, and now it's time to let that Grief loose. You've only got a few moments to concentrate. You visualise what form you need that Grief to take the shape of, and you invoke Inguz.

Wings of black burst from your backside, setting your nerves alight with fire as they tear through skin and the fabric of your costume. Quickly, you shut off the pain receptors in your back and shoulders, and force your wings to lift you upwards. Because you've lost sensation in your backside, you have no way of knowing if your wings are behaving the way they should or not, until you see yourself rising up above Wakaba Mirai's teddy bear army. She's wearing a stunned expression on her face, which she quickly wipes away and replaces with one of determination.

"So you can fly now," Wakaba Mirai says to you. "Big deal. You've just made yourself an easier target!" She raises her sword, and points it at you as she declares "Ursa Major!"

Pink arrays form in the air above Wakaba Mirai, seven in total in line with her sword which take the shape of the Northern Dipper, and they fire on you, shooting seven pillars of carmine flame which all converge on your location exactly.

Isa.

Twenty Isa runes appear in a circle at your back, dotting the jagged, flexing points of your Grief-bound wings, and you meet Wakaba Mirai's seven infernos with an equally powerful blast of ice. As the two attacks meet they erupt in an enormous cloud of steam, completely blanketing the battlefield and obscuring you and Wakaba Mirai from each other's vision. That last attack would have left you spent, but your Inguz rune is automatically converting your accumulated Grief into more thrust for your wings, keeping you airborne long enough for the steam to clear.

Wakaba Mirai is still standing. Her sword remains wreathed in flames, and although the steam explosion appears to have scalded her quite fiercely, her regeneration module is knitting over her burnt flesh with clear pink skin. Her teddy bears are not quite so lucky; each one is wracked with burns, or missing limbs altogether from where the pressure of the expanding steam cloud tore them off. Even her largest bear has suffered some pretty extensive damage, but not enough to bring it down.

You draw back the string of your bow, and Wakaba Mirai readies her sword for another blow, when- "Stop!"

Kazumi steps out onto the battlefield, and you and Wakaba Mirai both turn towards her as she interrupts your duel. "What do you think you're doing, Kazumi?" Wakaba Mirai snaps. "We're still fighting." She cranes her head up towards you, adding "Aren't we? I mean, I'm still good to go if you are."

"That's why I'm stopping you," Kazumi says. "You're clearly not having any problems; you'll just hurt each other if you keep going."

So, the good thing about these wings is, since they're made from our Grief, we can convert any additional Grief we build up in the course of using other magic into thrust to keep ourselves airborne, which also means she can use more powerful attacks without suffering an additional Grief burden because of it.

The bad news is that, with all the extra mana she's borrowing from having Kazumi near her, Mirai has gained access to a pretty ritzy new spell. This is my way of attempting to tie both her teddy bear magic and her fire magic into something that at on paper least looks like it's coherent-ish and on-theme-ish, by theming it after the ursa major constellation. Also of note, for those of you who read the manga and are wondering why La Bestia Refare isn't taking the shape of a giant teddy bear megazord - even though I had it take the shape of the giant bear megazord the last time Mirai used it - I figure there's no reason that magical teddy bears changing their shape into a larger stuffed teddy bear have to stick to the stock teddy bear shape. Expect to see both forms, the teddy bear megazord and the more realistically-shaped bear, depending on Mirai's needs... Is what I would say, if there weren't only two days left in this mess with which to put them on display.

For that matter, if you're wondering why Mirai is calling her attack Bestia Refare and not the correct La Bestia Refare, my rationale is that she's a Japanese teenager who probably has no formal training in Italian beyond Kazumi encouraging her teammates to give their attacks fancy names, so it made more sense to me that she wouldn't be entirely accurate. If you'll go back through the other attack names that the Saints have called out, most of them haven't actually been in Italian, barring Kazumi's own attacks.

Might've had her go and set up anchor points, but she'd need Sakura's help, and at that point we run into a 'too many cooks' situation. Besides, probably more interesting if she stays here. Also, Homura has an equivalent version of Luce now, so that's neat.

Stop the ...What? Did you cut the rest of this off somewhere?

My inspiration was actually the combination attack Madoka and Homura use at the end of Rebellion that breaks through Homura's witch barrier and blows up all the Kyubeys. I have no idea what this is outside of it looking hella cool, and also wondering if they stole "Luce" from "Lucifer". But you seem to have DMC on the mind lately, don't you?

I was going to call it 'stop the fight' or something to that degree, but for some reason 'stop the' is really funny to me, so I'll go with that unless told otherwise.

Luce might have been derived from 'Lucifer', but the name derives from Dante's (the demon in the given footage) father Sparda, particularly his two guns Luce (designed for rapid fire) and Ombra (designed for comfort and long-distance firing); Dante himself named his two guns Ebony and Ivory (equivalents to Luce and Ombra respectively). In fact, if you rewind the footage I gave you to 0:15, you'll see a sort of 'dark fireball' attack named Ombra. On the topic of Lucifer though, there's also a weapon named Lucifer in DmC that actually does relate to this situation, especially if Homura increases her tracing skills in the near future.

And DmC is on my mind because I was going to make an amalgam setting quest with DmC as it's core, but realized that changing up the lore like that when about three of the component franchises I was using were comprised of screaming pedants (Fate being the biggest), and it would take a lot of effort doing the world-building, so I decided not to. After that, my pent-up will to make something DmC related is starting to bleed into other stuff.

Also, advice for the future, I don't care much myself, but DmC fans are really strict about using DmC and not DMC. DmC is the acronym for the franchise proper, DMC is the acronym for the reboot that every fan hated.
