Confringentur 2; a Madoka Magica / Fate/Stay Night sequel

Day 27 Chapter 22
[X] Plan Help! Help!

"Limiti Esterni!"

You'd like to believe that your team is doing their best to whittle down the enemy's forces, but from this position – taking shelter in a bunker, only poking your head out to blast an approaching familiar or two before retreating – it's hard to get a good idea of the flow of battle. So while Saki and Mirai sound like they're doing a good job of blasting away, especially at those big birds, you really don't have any way of knowing for sure; and that's put you on edge.

The injuries your teammates have sustained, Mirai and Niko especially and Niko especially especially also have you on edge, doubly so because unlike the battle, you can see the toll their injuries are taking on their bodies.

Mirai lost her foot, and for some reason her regeneration module isn't working. Niko thinks it's the high concentration of ambient Grief in the air that's interfering, but all that technical stuff goes way over your head so you don't know. What you do know is how Mirai's injury is affecting her performance in battle. Because of the rush job Niko had to do in reattaching her foot, Mirai is unsteady on her feet, and needs to lean up against the wall of your shelter to keep her balance. She leans out just enough, pointing her wand out the window and letting loose a roaring jet of flame, and the act almost causes her to stumble. She catches herself, and quickly retreats behind cover, breathing heavily. When Saki, who is still lobbing balls of lightning at the enemy, isn't looking in her direction, Mirai reaches into her pocket for a Grief Seed, touching it to her Soul Gem which is already quite dark; unusually so for how short a time it's been since the last time she cleansed it just minutes ago.

Niko is another story entirely. Her entire shoulder was torn open by one of the tiny flying gremlin familiars, and you can see down to her bone where she was opened up by their razor-sharp claws. Her outfit is stained red with blood, and you can see thick fingers of black reaching up her neck and shoulder and down the length of her arm from the Grief that's infected her injury. You remember those stupid gremlins; Sidonia sent an entire swarm of them against your team when she tried to siege your base last week. You saw how their claws, slick with Grief like the rest of their tiny, bat-like bodies, infected the wounds they dealt to Saki and Mirai, and how their injuries had to be opened up again in order for the Quintet's nurse to properly heal them. Niko can't even close her wound up or else she'll just trap all that Grief inside her body.

"I'm fine," Niko says to you. She sounds more like she's trying to make you believe that she's fine, rather than sounding actually fine herself. "I shut off the pain receptors in my arm and shoulder, so it doesn't actually hurt." But she's still breathing heavily, and when she thinks you aren't looking, Niko touches a Grief Seed to her Soul Gem, the same as Mirai did.

You're the team leader. It's your responsibility to keep your teammates safe in battle; and right now you're not doing a very good job of that.

"Akemi, it's Kazumi. We're in a really bad place right now, and we need some backup so we can clear out and get medical attention. Who's available?"

"Oriko and Kirika, maybe,"
Akemi replies. "It's well past when they'd have gotten out of school, so hopefully they can be there shortly. I'll contact Nurse Ortensia and see if she can get there as well." That's good; Mikuni and her older nurse cousin were exactly the people you were hoping for. "How… How bad is bad?"

"Mirai lost her foot to one of those screaming ones with the lasers, and Niko had to put it back on manually 'cause her regeneration's not working properly. Niko herself is even worse; one of those tiny bat-gremlins got her shoulder. She's bleeding pretty bad, and she's got Grief crawling up her neck and-"

You can't say any more. You're going to have nightmares for weeks because of how bad Niko looks.

"Kazumi, I'm going to be okay."

Niko doesn't sound okay.

"Knowing Oriko, she's already making arrangements to head your way now,"
Akemi says to you. "If not, I'll still need to contact her about mobilising Nurse Ortensia. But she's still closer in any event, so she'll probably be there first."

"Okay."

"Just hold out until she and Oriko can arrive."

You'll try your best. "All right everyone, Akemi's sending Mikuni and her nurse cousin to reinforce us!" you say to Saki, Mirai, and Niko. "Let's just try to hold out until they get here, okay?"

"Easier done than said!" Saki replies. The sound of ball lightning beign thrown from her riding crop almost drowns out her voice as she says "I could do this all day!"

"Maybe, but Mirai and Niko are in pretty bad shape." You don't even have to gesture to the injured pair; their own performance speaks for themselves. Mirai is unsteady, and lists to one side as she tries to angle her weapon out of the window to launch another flame attack. She stumbles, and just barely catches herself before she can fall onto Saki. "If you want to stay behind and help Mikuni and her cousin fight, I won't stop you-" You'd even stay behind with Saki, since you're not injured and are handling things just fine. You make a beeline for the window, and tap Mirai on the shoulder in order to make her tag out for you. "Limiti Esterni!" "-But Mirai and Niko need to get out of here so they can receive medical attention."

"I know that!" Saki's grunt as she flings a ball of lightning out the window only helps emphasise her words, but despite her boasts moments earlier, she too has to pull back, tapping a Grief Seed to her Soul Gem as she breathes heavily. "Okay, maybe I'm not doing as hot as I thought," she finally says. "It's… Really getting to me; all this Grief in the air. It's making it really hard to breathe."

"I know." You feel lucky; you've got more mana than Saki does, more than four times the amount she has, so you aren't feeling the effects of the ambient Grief nearly as much. But you are still feeling it. You lean your head out of the window just enough to where you can see Lancer. She's draining you at a much faster rate than she normally does. Which is terrifying, because she's never actually managed to make you feel drained before. There must be a lot of Grief in the air to make you feel this way.

To be on the safe side, you join Saki in touching a Grief Seed to your Soul Gem. You feel the Seed slowly drinking up the blackness in your Soul, until it's had its fill and you store it away in your pocket.

Where the heck even are your pockets, anyway? This outfit's way too skimpy!

"Stella Orizzonte!"

A beam of bright gold slices through the sky above you, climbing over the limited visibility given to you by the windows, and you see it slice clean through one of the massive birds. The other familiars turn their attention towards the source of the blast and swarm. "What was that?" Saki asks, lobbing a ball of lightning at the massive bird familiars as they reposition themselves. "Was that our reinforcements?"

"Who else would it be?" Niko asks. She clutches her arm just a little less tightly, and you can hear her breathing relax by just a little bit. With her good hand, she touches the wall she's leaning against, and more windows open up along the rear wall. "Go check it out," she says, to no one in particular.

You volunteer because you're probably in the best shape of anyone on your team, and you stick your head out of the window. There's a blinding flash of light that overtakes your vision, and when it clears, you see Mikuni and her older cousin standing there, victorious. "Wow, that was fast."

"Oh, it was nothing, Kazusa-san," Mikuni says. "Caren-san just happens to have an affinity for dealing with these pesky things, that's all. Now-" Mikuni gives her cousin a nudge with her elbow, and says "Caren-san, would you please attend to their wounded?"

Mikuni's cousin rolls her eyes, but she advances towards your shelter, knocking on the solid concrete wall to be let in. Niko presses her hand to the wall, opening up a door for her to enter through, and you pass Mikuni's cousin as you head outside to survey the damage.

Well, there's a lot of dead familiars and a lot of Grief lying around. That can't be good for the environment.

"I hope our arrival was well-timed," Mikuni says, giving you a slight bow. "How are things going, Kazusa-san?"

"They could be going a lot better," you say. "Mirai and Niko are both messed up pretty bad. I hope your cousin is working on Niko right now-" You put just enough emphasis into your voice so that Mikuni's cousin is sure to hear you. "-But maybe you could take a look at Mirai's leg, if you're not doing anything else?"

"Certainly."

Mikuni follows you inside – as does Lancer, who makes herself visible when she steps inside the shelter after Mikuni – and you point her to Mirai, who has slumped back down against the wall with her injured leg sticking out. "It's about time," Mirai says, earning her a less-than-satisfied look from Mikuni at her dismissive tone. "Uh, I mean, thanks for coming to save our asses. I'd probably still be leaned up against a wall trying not to lose my balance if you hadn't shown up sooner." Mikuni nods her head, and Mirai asks "What was that beam of light we saw just a second ago? Was that you?"

"Yes." Mikuni nods her head, and shows off the silver device strapped to her wrist, which compresses and slides back underneath her sleeve as soon as she's done showing it off. "It's a variation on my standard Parafulmine, but it's built to work with the weapon Tohsaka-san made for me, streamlining the process and making something that's less powerful, but easier and faster to deploy." Mikuni lets out an awkward laugh, and she adds "I'm still workshopping the name, I'm afraid to say."

"Less talk-y, more…" Mikuni's cousin stops herself the instant she realises that isn't going the way she was hoping. "Whatever. Oriko, how's the pink one looking?"

"That depends," Mikuni says. "Niko-san, you were the one who repaired Wakaba-san's leg, right?" Niko, sitting there while Mikuni's cousin paws all over her, nods her head. "Right. Well, her leg is lopsided; it looks like the regeneration module was able to regrow just enough of her leg before stopping that it's causing an imbalance to her gait, and-"

"I know that already," Mirai snaps. "Just tell me how you're going to fix it."

Saki shoots Mirai a nasty glare. "Be polite, Mirai," goes unsaid. "Unfortunately, Wakaba-san, the best way to fix this is going to be cutting your foot off, and then reattaching it at the proper length." Mirai's face goes white, but Mikuni continues before Mirai has a chance to protest. "I know, it sounds cruel, but I promise this will only take a second. My Uruz rune is specialised for healing, and in fact I originally learned it in order to have an answer to severed limbs."

You'd rather not ask what Mikuni has been through to where that's something she's seriously had to consider. Something probably happened to either her, Kure, or someone else they're really close to. "Just turn off the pain receptors in your leg, and I'll have this done in no time."

The silver blade deploys itself again from underneath Mikuni's sleeve, and she readies herself, lining up on Mirai's leg with surgical precision. But before she can bring her blade down, Mirai pulls back, screaming "Do no harm!" Mikuni stops, and looks at Mirai. "What about 'Do no harm'?" she asks. "How's this supposed to help me if you're cutting off my leg?"

"The Hippocratic Oath doesn't mean what you think it means," Mikuni's cousin says. "It means we're not supposed to cause undue harm in the course of treatment. But something like this, where causing some form of harm is necessary in order to prevent greater harm, is acceptable. Why do you think amputations were a common treatment for horrific limb injuries for so long? Why do you think they remain common when there's no other hope of the limb in question ever getting better?" Mirai says nothing, and Mikuni's cousin continues. "It's because if the limb isn't removed, it could just make things worse for the patient, or hinder them unnecessarily if it isn't removed. So shut up and let my cousin chop your foot off. It'll go faster if you don't squirm."

"Niko-san, I'll need you to turn off Wakaba-san's regeneration module, if you don't mind," Mikuni says. Niko nods her head, and – with her right arm back to normal now – reaches into her pocket for her phone. A few quick button presses later, and Niko gives Mikuni a thumbs-up. "Thank you."

You don't look. It was bad enough seeing it the first time.

[ ] Wat do?

If this comes across as a bit too flippant, that's my bad. I was struggling to get the words right on this one, and I think I might have overdone Kazumi's more childlike take on the world. Anyway, I know this one's an open-ender, and I'm sorry, but we've got a pretty good itinerary already,
After this, we should probably get the Saints up to speed on the Nachtkrapp and why fighting them in a bunker was a smart decision, and we should test Mirai's ability to keep Ramesses fueled now that she's got that Mystic Code we made for her. We'll also need Niko to be healthy enough to help Archer, Oriko, and Lancer make their combined all-purpose Soul Gem protection charms as well as program regeneration modules for each member of the Quintet. Among other things, if anyone has anything they'd like to add.
That just needs to be put into better terms, and I was having trouble parsing all the things I thought we should tackle into a form that could be voted on, so there's that. I f ou don't have anything else, that's fine. Just let me know, and maybe I'll come back with something that's worded better later. Today has been a hard day for me to put into words.

[X] Plan: Up to Speed
-[X] Inform the Saints about the Nachtkrapp; while you're at it, try to get them up to speed on the other familiars Sidonia's made that they might not have encountered yet, or at least ones they don't know much about.
-[X] Focus on getting everyone healed before continuing with other stuff.
--[X] Possibly call a meeting? That depends on everyone's progress with their soul gem add-ons, but if not a team meeting, it might be nice to get your resident crafters in touch with each other.

I guess that's all of what SVS said, but other than that I don't have much to add, sorry.

Something else I'd like to remark on, that has somehow completely gone missing throughout all the discussions about the 1 November date of Sidonia's plan going into action. 1 November is also the date of Samhain, and we just so happen to have two Scottish witches with us. I'm surprised this never came up. It's also the date of the autumn Dziady festival, which is another festival that Sidonia would be familiar with, and would probably be the festival I was using for her plans if I hadn't accidentally stumbled my way into a much better reason to use the date.

Day 27 Chapter 23
[X] Plan: Up to Speed

As your combined teams sit down together in the aftermath of the day's events – and you hate to phrase it like that, but the day is still far from being over – you do your best to keep your eyes open and your attention on the members of your teams who were at ground zero. Kyouko is seated close to Tomoe-san, and is currently filling her in on what happened in the park earlier. Her movements highlight the disturbing black marks which marred Madoka's face, shoulder, and chest, and in your mind you can still see the fear in Madoka's gold-stained eye as it stares back at you.

You know that image will haunt your dreams for weeks.

Wakaba Mirai sits by Asami Saki, fuming in the direction of Oriko and Nurse Ortensia. Why, you can't imagine, especially after the two of them provided, by Kazumi's account, desperately-needed medical assistance to the pair. You'll be keeping a close eye on Wakaba Mirai; hopefully this doesn't turn into another reason for her to fly off the handle; and you had just dealt with her problems with Kyouko, too. You really hope this doesn't turn into another big issue for her.

Kazumi hasn't let go of Kanna Niko since the pair sat down. You can't get a good read on Kanna Niko's inner thoughts, whether she appreciates the affection her girlfriend is showing in light of her brutal injuries, but if you were in Kanna Niko's shoes you'd probably find it rather distracting. The pair are seated next to Hitomi and Oriko, and the two of them along with Kanna Niko look like they're discussing something; probably some egghead stuff about Soul Gems and Mystic Codes, the majority of which hyou know would go over your heads.

But you're glad that at least some of your allies understand the more complicated material to the degree that those three do.

Speaking of eggheads, Oriko's cousin, Nurse Ortensia, is sitting off to the side. She doesn't look like she's doing anything, but you're sure she's just monitoring Kanna Niko's injuries from afar. You didn't see them, but you've seen other, similar injuries dealt by the Skrzak, and you know it's never pretty. Kazumi said the Skrzak got Kanna Niko's shoulder. You don't want to imagine what that looked like.

That just leaves Kirika, Maki Kaoru, and Misaki Umika. None of them are doing much of anything at the moment. You'd like to keep the remaining two Pleiades Saints around, but- "Kirika, you can leave if you feel like it," you say. "If you don't have anything better to do and are worried about leaving mom by herself, I won't say anything if you want to leave."

"Huh?" Kirika looks up from her daydreaming; something to do with Oriko, if that look of "You interrupted my fantasising" on her face is any indication. "Oh, yeah, all right," she says. "I guess I was expecting you'd have us all doing something, but if you don't need me then yeah, I'd feel better if someone was at home with mom right now." Under her breath, you hear Kirika grumble to herself "Least of all 'cause I don't trust Berserker to be home alone with mom."

"You really think he'd try something?" You ask, also under your breath. "With his master's mother?"

"I mean, sure, I was mostly saying that as a joke, but who really knows?" Kirika replies. "Anyway, I'd feel safer if mom had someone with her in case something bad happened. That way, I'll be able to let you know if something happens."

You nod your head. "All right, then," you say; "And thanks. I'd feel better if someone were watching over mom as well."

Kirika gives you a hug, and heads over to where Oriko is sitting to hug her goodbye as well – though you watch as Kirika, interrupting Oriko from her discussion with Hitomi and Kanna Niko, grabs her lover by the lapels of the Shirome High uniform jacket and pulls her into a passionate, but ultimately disruptive kiss – and is about to head out, when Oriko stops her. "Dearest, where do you think you're going?"

Kirika stops. At first, the look on her face is one of "Oh, crap, Oriko's mad at me for interrupting her talks!" but when she turns around, hesitant to accept her punishment, things reveal themselves to be not what they seem. "Shizuki-san, Niko-san, and I were in the middle of discussing the finishing touches of our revised Soul Gem protection charms. If you leave now, I won't be able to give you the new model."

Kanna Niko nods her head; "And I'll need your Soul Gem's information if I'm going to map a regeneration module to it," she says.

"So please, do stick around, Kure-san," Hitomi thirds. "We'll make sure to do yours first if you're in a hurry, but please don't leave right away."

Kirika turns to face you, and all you can do is nod your head. "I didn't know how close the three of you were to finishing," you say. "In that case, Kirika, you can head back to mom when they're done."

Three eggheads all nod their egg heads in unison, and Oriko beckons for you to join the table. "Now, Akemi-san, last time we had Archer helping us out with this," she says. "Do you think we should ask for him again, or do you trust SHizuki-san to do the Alterations this time?"

"If it's all the same to you, I'd feel more comfortable letting Archer do it," you say, bowing for Hitomi. "At least for Kirika and myself. I know how important practicing your craft is for you, Hitomi, but I'm sure Archer would prefer to know that his daughters were in his own care."

"Not only that, but some of these girls have pretty complex shapes to their Soul Gems." You turn around as Archer's voice fills your ears. "Tomoe I know has a really complicated pattern that you'd probably find difficult to work with, and most of the Saints seem to have pretty involved patterns as well." Hitomi nods her head, and accepts Archer's decision with some resignation. "That said, if I take care of my girls, and the ones with more complicated Soul Gem patterns, then if you wanted to I'd be okay with letting you handle the simpler ones. Things'll go quicker if we've got two people working."

"Of course," Hitomi says, her eyes lighting up. "I… I'd be honoured to assist."

You and Kirika are the first to line up. Surrounded by only a simple silver band, the citrine-coloured diamond that is Kirika's Soul Gem lacks the fancy filigree surrounding it that yours, Tomoe-san, and Kyouko's Soul Gems possess, and Archer makes quick work of setting the enhanced charm over the original. Kirika admires Archer's work; it's a simple job, a silver band wrapped around her diamond-shaped Soul, but it's more than enough. Kirika leaps up, wrapping her arms around her much taller father's neck and dragging him down to her level so she can nuzzle against him. "Thank you, daddy," she chirps, before letting go, hugging Oriko again, and skipping off with a cry of "I'll go make sure everything's okay with mom, now!"

"Wait, dearest, Niko-san isn't finished programming her module yet!" Oriko calls out, once again stopping Kirika in her tracks. "I know you're anxious, but you can't leave yet!"

Archer sets the enhanced charm onto your Soul Gem next, before moving on to Oriko – "I know you've got a pretty simple pattern, but Minako would kill me if I let something happen to you" – and then the promised more ornately-patterned Soul Gems afterwards. Meanwhile, Kyouko trusts her Soul Gem to Hitomi, after which Hitomi moves on to setting charms into the more simplistic-patterned Soul Gems.

But there's one exception that neither Archer nor Hitomi dares to touch. "Kazumi, you've got to let one of them do it," Kanan Niko pleads, as Kazumi hesitates to relinquish her Soul Gem. "I promise, you're not going to go berserk just because one of them is holding your Soul Gem for a few seconds."

"But what if I do?" Kazumi asks, backing away even from Kanna Niko. "I don't want to hurt anyone." Seconds pass, and both Archer and Hitomi stare, neither one willing to make a move, until Kazumi asks "… What about you, Niko? Would you do it for me?"

Kanna Niko is taken aback by the request. "You'd trust me with your Soul Gem that much?" she asks. Kazumi nods her head. "All right, then."

As Oriko gives Kanna Niko the silver ring with the protective charm inscribed on it, Archer stands by, giving her instructions on how to properly set the charm onto Kazumi's Soul Gem. When everyone is ready, Kanna Niko nods her head, and Kazumi slips the spherical bauble containing her Soul Gem from her earlobe, and hands it to Niko.

As Niko works, slowly using her magic to twist and wrap the silver ring around the earring, Kazumi breathes deeply, in and out. Measured and calm; whatever demon possessed her previously isn't awakened by the sight of Kanna Niko handling her Soul Gem. Kanna Niko finishes her work, and gently reattaches the bauble to Kazumi's earlobe.

Kazumi greets her with a kiss that would put the affection shown to Oriko by Kirika to shame.

Finally, the work of Archer and Hitomi is complete, and you can move on. "While Kanna Niko continues to work on programming regeneration modules for myself and the rest of my team, I'd like to take a few minutes to go over some information regarding some of Sidonia's more common familiars that, in hindsight, I think I didn't do a good job of explaining." You could have sworn you had given the Saints this information before, but their poor showing against the Nachtkrapp and the Skrzak shows that you could have done a better job. If you even explained them at all. "On top of that, there's some information regarding some less common familiars that we've encountered that you might not have, and I'd like to go other those as well."

You had been planning on telling the rest of your team to go home if they didn't need to be here, because they've all experienced what you're about to tell the Pleiades Saints. But with Kanna Niko still needing them to stick around so she can complete her regeneration modules, you've decided against sending them home. "For the members of my team, if you've got something more productive to be working on while I'm talking, feel free to focus on that instead. Oriko, and I know you and Hitomi should probably be monitoring Wakaba Mirai to see if that Mystic Code you set her up with is working properly."

"Now, for everyone else…" You suddenly feel very awkward as you realise you've unintentionally sat yourself down at the head of the Pleiades Saints' table. You started this inter-team partnership by saying that you would be working with the Pleiades Saints, and not be above them, but unconsciously sitting down in a seat that you assume is normally reserved for either Kazumi or Asami Saki, you suddenly feel as though you've made a mistake.

Without another word, you stand, and move yourself over to a less conspicuous seat before continuing. "As I was saying, while I'm not sure which of Sidonia's familiars would qualify as being the 'most dangerous'-" A title that could reasonably go to any number of Sidonia's larger familiars, "-I think I should start by addressing Sidonia's most commonly-used familiars, starting with one I think is especially relevant in light of your earlier encounter; the Nachtkrapp, or the ones that look like giant birds."

Asami Saki raises her hand. "They have names?" she asks.

"They all do," you say. "Though we don't know the names of all of them, the ones we do know take their names from monsters found in Slavic folklore. Now, the Nachtkrapp…"

[Homura] Do you
-[ ] While it's relevant, inquire with some of your more learned teammates about the identities of Sidonia's unknown familiars (the vampires, the spiders, the vines, etc...)
-[ ] Ask Wakaba Mirai to demonstrate whether her new Mystic Code is functioning properly
--[ ] Have her fight a gauntlet of opponents to test her own magical stamina
--[ ] Have her send Ramesses into a fight to test her ability to keep him maintained
---[ ] Choose your fighters (write-in either up to five puella magi or up to one servant)
-[ ] Leave Kazumi in charge while you deal with your own affairs
--[ ] Join Kirika in heading back to the Mikuni mansion to make sure your mother is safe
--[ ] Pay a visit to the Kanames to see how Madoka is doing
--[ ] Leave with Tomoe-san and go with her to check on the security surrounding Dáinsleif
--[ ] Find Sayaka and see if she's doing all right after what happened earlier
---[ ] Encourage Kyouko and/or Hitomi to leave the meeting and go check on Sayaka
-[ ] Other (write-in)

[Kazumi] Do you
-[ ] Have anything else you want to add that Akemi won't be covering? (write-in what)
-[ ] Encourage Niko to leave the meeting once she's done with her work so she can speak to her parents
--[ ] Leave the meeting so you can go with her
-[ ] Inquire with Lancer and/or Assassin as to how the Soul Gems of the spare Kazumis are being stored
-[ ] Other (write-in)

I had meant to focus more on having Homura talk about Sidonia's familiars to the Saints, but decided against rehashing information that's already known to the players. Instead, most of this update is focusing on our resident eggheads of Hitomi, Oriko, and Niko taking care of some much-needed business. Congratulations, now both the Quintet and the Saints have been fitted with updated Soul Gem protection charms, and Niko is working on regeneration modules for the Quintet. There's still some stuff we can take care of while we're here, however, so the day won't be over quite so soon.

In other news, I'm glad I went off to check, because today is two years to the day since the original quest ended.
You feel a cold breeze blowing through the skeleton of the buildings around you, feeling the harshness of cold air force its way into your lungs, and your eyes shoot open. You can see the sun, just barely poking its rays above the cover of grey clouds passing over your head. You can see the sun. It's the first of May, two-thousand-eleven, and for the first time in all your many lives you can see the sun rising on this morning. You've won.
1 September, 2020. Not counting the additional omakes, which put the two-year anniversary to the actual end of the story at 6 September.

[X] Plan: Test Run
-[X] Homura:
--[X] Ask Wakaba Mirai to demonstrate whether her new Mystic Code is functioning properly
---[X] Send Ramesses up against Gilgamesh, as he's an opponent of roughly equal strength, and you have a feeling that they might've wanted to finish what they left off. Just remind them that they shouldn't kill each other.
-[X] Kazumi:
--[X] Encourage Niko to leave the meeting once she's done with her work so she can speak to her parents
---[X] Leave the meeting so you can go with her

This good? Not sure if Gilgamesh would accept, but he's the only other Servant who can match Ramesses in terms of raw firepower. By the way, how many days left until Sidonia's plan? I've been thinking that we might want to use the Ramesseum before the attack so that we don't get Nega-Hope'd again, or at least use that as a starting move. We might not be able to use it at all, actually; the only way to use it for prolonged periods would probably be hooking it up to the leylines, which is by no means a good idea right now.

Today is 29 October. Sidonia's plan goes live on 1 November. I leave you to do the math. As for whether Mirai can afford to support the Ramesseum without us having to tap the local leylines, I think that's a call we can only make after seeing her well she's able to support her servant without it. Or maybe that's a risk we're willing to take if it means not letting the world get overrun by the spirits of the dead come the Wild Hunt.

... Actually, seeing a bunch of ancient Egyptian beasts fighting with warrior spirits of the dead would be a pretty cool image, not going to lie.

Just a reminder to anyone who cares, tomorrow and Sunday I will be traveling, and so my ability to put out an update on either of those days will be up in the air and dependent on when I arrive and how I'm feeling about writing when I get there. Also, Tuesday and Wednesday are newly up in the air as well, owing to some scheduling changes. I will try to have updates for at least two of these four days, at minimum, and possibly more, but at the moment I can't make any guarantees. You'll know if I'm able to get out an update on any of those days, and I'll let you know if I'm unable to.

Day 27 Chapter 24
[X] Plan: Test Run (part 1)

"All right, it's done."

As Akemi gives you all an in-depth explanation about everything you're missing regarding Sidonia's familiars – and you're incredibly grateful that you've never had to encounter one of the giant snakes before, because you don't think there's a way for anyone on your team to beat it short of maybe you if you get lucky and can vaporise it in a single shot – Niko works, hunched over at her laptop, typing away. You can see on her face that she's still shaken up over everything that's happened today, so as she works, you make sure to occasionally lean over and hug her when it looks like she needs one.

But finally, as Akemi is finishing up her talk, Niko announces that she's done. "I was able to copy the bulk of the program over from what I'd already done, and replace the lines of code that are relevant to our Soul Gems with information relevant to yours," Niko says to Akemi. "As soon as you give the okay, I can tell the program to execute, and you'll be all set."

"That's good, thank you," Akemi says. "Should one of us volunteer to test it out, or…?"

"If one of your teammates are willing to take a hit in the name of science," Niko replies. "Otherwise, we can postpone any full-scale testing until the next time we're all going to do combat practice."

Four heads among the Quintet's number all nod, while a fifth remains stubborn. "I mean, sure, that's cool and all," Kure says, "But won't reprogramming our Soul Gems to speed up our body's healing just put Oriko out of a job? She learned her one rune specifically because we needed someone who could heal us."

"The module contains a manual activation switch," Niko says to Kure. "If you're so inclined, I can just not turn yours on if you'd prefer to keep Mikuni employed."

"No," Akemi's Archer says, cutting off Kure before she can say anything else. "You especially need some way to heal yourself without Oriko. What if, God forbid, someone else puts a hand through your stomach, and Oriko's not around to heal you?" You can hear the fear iN the red Archer's voice as she speaks, and you can see from the corner of your eye how Kaoru is trying to hide herself from his view. "Your mother would kill me if I let something happen to you or Homura while we're out being heroes. I can't tell anyone else to accept this from her or not, but as your father, I can and I will insist that you and Homura both accept this."

"I was already planning on it," Akemi says. "I hadn't counted on Kirika being so… Obstinate, about this, however."

"I'm not being obstinate!" Kirika says, obstinately. "I just… I don't want the skills Oriko's learned to go to waste, that's all. She studied her rune really hard so she could be our team's healer, and now-"

"I still have an important role on our team, dearest," Oriko says. "I only studied Uruz as a backup, after all. Ideally, if I'm performing my role as intended we shouldn't need healing. But it's always better to have it and not need it, than the opposite."

"On that note, however, this is something else I'd like to see us taking care of," Akemi says. She turns and looks at Mirai, before saying "First and foremost, I want to make sure that the work that Hitomi and Oriko did making Wakaba Miria's Mystic Code is actually, you know, working as intended. Maybe, depending on how long that takes, we can schedule some sort of full-team combat training session, but for right now I'd like to just focus our attention on her."

"All right-y, then," Mirai says with a roll of her eyes. "Who's my opponent?"

"Caster," Akemi says. "He and your Ramesses have some business I imagine they would like to conclude, and since this Mystic Code was built with your ability to properly supply him in mind, it's more beneficial for us to see if it's doing that. So, if you, he, and Caster all don't mind, I'd like to see the two of them fight."

"Well, I don't particularly mind it, myself," Mirai says. "Just make sure you've got a few Grief Seeds on hand in case things go wrong, and I'll be fine. But getting Rider to go along with this… Might take some convincing. I think he's still mad at me for telling him off last night. Let me speak to him and see if I can get him to agree to something."

While you're left wondering what Mirai might have said to Rider to make him upset with her, Mirai turns to Tomoe, and says "Hey, while I'm doing that, go talk to whoever the hell your Caster is; see if he's up for a rematch, I guess."

"So, where does that leave the rest of us?" you ask, hoping that if she's no longer needed, Akemi will let Niko go so you can pester her into speaking to her parents. "If you're only thinking you'll need Mirai tonight, is there anything else you want the rest of us doing?" Well, 'pester' probably isn't the right word. They did agree to meet up to speak at a later date, but Niko thought that later date wouldn't be today's date.

But you think there's no time like the present, especially if they've got important stuff they need to say to each other.

"As long as whatever else you're thinking of would be useful, I don't particularly mind," Akemi says. "That's about it. I just want us to make the best use of the time we have left. If it's something important that can't wait, don't think you need my permission to do it."

Well, you think you've got something important to do that can't wait.

"In that case," you say, leaning over and whispering so only Niko can hear you, "Maybe you could go visit your parents, if you've finished up with that other stuff you needed to do."

"Can I?" Niko's question isn't one asking for permission. It's the "Can I?" of someone who doesn't know if they should. "I… I already spoke to them earlier today. They know I'm safe, and-"

You have to cut Niko off there; "And I'm sure they'd be happy to see you in person," you say. "Especially if they're able to see you before they're forced to evacuate." You lean in even closer, kissing Niko on the cheek. "I'll go with you, if it'd make you feel better. I know you said your parents wanted to meet me."

"But I… But they… They think you're a boy," Niko says. "I… I already told you, they don't know about me…"

"So you don't have to tell them right now, if you're not comfortable," you say. "But you should still go see them while you have the chance, and I don't know if you'll have the chance again later. You've got it now, so I think you should take it."

"I…" You can see Niko trying to protest, in her heart. But that's just her trauma speaking. You remember how relieved she sounded when she hung up after talking to her mother. Even if that relief was hidden under her tears. "All right," Niko finally say. "I don't know if I'm… Comfortable, with meeting them right away, but you make a good point. I should go see them while I still have the chance, and I don't know if I'll have the chance again before this is all over."

"All right." You stand, and say to Akemi "Niko and I are going out to take care of something important. Since she's done with the work she needed to do, I was hoping that'd be okay." Akemi nods her head, and you take that as your cue to ask "Um… Before we go, though, do you think you, or one of your friends, could set us up with something that's got an hypnosis charm stuck to it?"

"That's fine," Akemi says to you. But your question appears to pique her interest, and she asks "What were you planning on hypnotising?"

"Well…" You fidget under Akemi's gaze. You had decided that Niko speaking to her parents was important, but you don't know if Akemi will see it that way once you've said it. "Niko and I were going to speak to her parents, to let them know she's okay and to try and work something out between them, and I was hoping we could get an hypnosis charm so we can get them out of here. Would that be okay?"

"That… Should be fine," Akemi says after a few moments of thought. "Speak to either Hitomi or Nurse Ortensia before you leave; one of them will set you up with something that's been charmed for you." You thank Akemi, and she says "Good luck, Kazumi."

[ ] Wat do? (write-in)

Today has been a very long day for me. I'd like to have made this long enough to cover us actually getting there and speaking with Niko's parents, but I had what I had, and I was too burned out to do any more. Since I'm unsure if I'll have time tomorrow to do anything, I wanted to get at least something out while I still had it up in my Word document. OS here we are. If you've got anything in particular you want to see the Hijiris address when speaking to their daughter, put it here. Otherwise, I'll figure that out on my own whever I'm able to come back to it. Might be tomorrow, might be Sunday. Cheers. I'm beat.

Don't have anything myself vote-wise, but I wish you luck in whatever it is you're doing, and hope that you're in good condition by the time you're back.

Day 27 Chapter 25
[X] Plan: Test Run (part 2)

Niko's house doesn't look like a bad place from the outside; it's a two-storey building off a not-bad-looking street on the edge of town. There's no major signs that anything is amiss, but that doesn't change the fact that the center of town is still badly damaged, and from the sight of military-looking vehicles still roaming the streets, you can guess that evacuation and bomb-disposal efforts are still ongoing even this far away from the city center.

Not that you'd blame them, after seeing first-hand the kind of damage Sidonia's Grief-fuelled warheads are capable of.

But to get back to the point you had been trying to make, mentally, before you let your thoughts wander. While Niko's house looks nice from the outside, from the look on her face it's clear that she's not entirely enthused about returning here. She may have been relieved to hear from her parents that the choice existed, but she's still going through a lot, and even if she's relieved, you don't think she's ready to come home permanently just yet.

Maybe she never will be.

You don't enjoy the thought, but it's possible that Niko spends the rest of her life unable to truly come home to her family. She might stay with them, maybe even for most days of the week, but if that's the case then this wouldn't really be home to her.

But maybe, if she lets you, you'd like to make her home wherever you are.

You reach out your hand and give Niko's a gentle squeeze, saying to her "Whatever happens, I'm here for you."

Niko nods her head slowly, replying only with a soft "I wish you were here the last time," as she gets go of your hand and approaches the front door. She holds out her hand, hesitating as it hovers above the door as though she's about to knock, and she holds herself like that for what feels like forever before she decides to ring the doorbell instead.

"You didn't update them to say that you'd be coming today, did you?" you ask Niko, when after several seconds of silence no one has come to the door.

"No, I haven't said anything to them since earlier in the day," Niko replies. "If they're out of the house… I hope they're at least being smart and are evacuating."

But eventually, the door opens; it's an older woman, and good lord, if that's what Niko is going to look like when she grows up, you are into it, because she looks just like Niko. They've got the same face, the same gorgeous platinum-blonde locks, the same blue eyes that manage to sparkle even when they're looking down, and she just all-around gives off the same vibe that you get from Niko.

"… Kanna?" asks Niko's mother, "Is… Is it really you? Or…?"

"No, it's really me," Niko says. She hangs her head, and looks away as her mom surges forward to wrap her arms around Niko. She can't bring herself to say "I'm back," so instead, Niko says "How… How is everyone else been?"

"Your father is fine," Niko's mom says, before correcting herself, adding "We've all been worried about you. We… Never told your sisters that there were two of you, so they've been… On edge, ever since she ran away the first time. I think… I think they could tell something was wrong when she came back, but they didn't know enough to know what it was…"

"I'm sorry," Niko says. "I just… I couldn't be here anymore. I didn't-" Niko stops herself when she sees you staring at her. You know what she's about to say, so you put a stop to that with a shake of your head. "-Didn't think I deserved to stay here after…"

"Why did you never say anything to us?" Niko's mother asks. "You've spent so many years keeping all of that bottled up. If you had just said something to us… If we have just known… Maybe we could have gotten you some help, and then none of this would have had to happen."

You don't want to press your luck, but you want to make the point clear to Niko. "See?" you ask her. "Your parents still love you." Even though she's an idiot who's spent so long running from herself that she needs help slowing down.

It's with those words that Niko's mother turns her attention away from her daughter and onto you. "Kanna, who's your friend?" Why does it make you angry to hear her calling Niko 'Kanna'?

"That… That's Kazumi," Niko says. "She's the friend I was telling you about on the phone; the one who's been helping me."

Niko's mother smiles for you. "I'm glad you've finally started to open up again and have made some friends." Niko nods her head, but there's something you feel like you're missing. Niko left her other homunculus with her parents some time before the end of last year, you recall her saying. Or else right around the start of this year. Either way, it was her homunculus that graduated high school, not Niko, so early March even at the very latest. So Niko hasn't been home in months, aside from that brief visit last week where she spoke to her parents and her other homunculus about what had happened. But Niko's mom is acting like it's been a lot longer that Niko has had problems. So what's going on? What are you missing?

What isn't Niko telling you?

You hate the idea that Niko might be keeping secrets from you – still – but you don't think now is the right time to press. Besides, if they're not actually about you, does it really matter if Niko is keeping secrets? Doesn't everyone deserve to have some things about their life be private knowledge?

"Is dad home?" Niko asks her mother. "What about Yuri and Mika?"

"Your father and I agreed to get them out of town first, once that woman started making her terrorist threats," Niko's mother says. "They're staying with your aunt Hinako until this is all over. We didn't think you'd actually be coming over tonight, so we were making plans to join them…" Niko's mother moves aside, and lets the two of you take a peek at the inside of their house. It's a mess. I'm sorry you have to see our house in such a state, Kazumi. My husband and I have been trying to pack our things so we can join my sister in Shibuya until this is all over."

"It's okay, ma'am," you say, bowing, just grateful enough that Niko's mother hasn't turned you away yet. She can clearly tell who you are. "I just wanted to be here for Niko when she came to speak with you and her father." You turn to Niko next, and ask her "Who are Yuri and Mika, by the way?"

"They're my younger sisters." Niko didn't tell you she had younger sisters. Did she? Maybe she told the old you? "I… Don't think I've mentioned them before, at least, no more than in passing if I by chance did. They're… A lot younger than me, actually, almost by a decade."

Niko's mother smiles, and nods her head before asking you "Did Kanna ever tell you that we were living in the United States for a time? My husband's work needed him to relocate to California for a while, but when we found out I was pregnant again he asked his boss if he could move us back to Japan. That was… Almost a decade ago, now."

Niko nods her head, slowly, silently, something which her mother pays mind to. Quickly, she returns her attention to Niko, as if needing to change the subject. "I'm glad you've got a friend like her," she says. "You haven't had a friend your own age since…" When Niko's mother's voice trails off, you're left wondering what the since she's talking about could refer to. "Anyway, where are my manners? I should introduce myself."

Niko's mother gives you a courtesy bow, and introduces herself. "My name is Hijiri Kayako," she says. There's a brief commotion at the door, and when Niko's mother is joined by a taller man with dark hair, halfway between curly and straight, she adds "And this is my husband, Anthony Hijiri." Unlike her mother, you can't see anything of Niko in the dark-haired man. "We're Kanna's parents, and we were both relieved to hear from her when she called us earlier in the day."

Niko's father also bows for you, before immediately leaning over and wrapping his arms around Niko. "You… You're the real one this time, right, Kanna?"

While he's still crouched down, hugging Niko, her father takes a moment to look at her eyes. You've never met Niko's first homunculus, but based on what Akemi and her friends have said, Hijiri Kanna had red eyes, as opposed to Niko's blue eyes. "Yes, it's me," Niko says. "I'm the real one this time."

You can't imagine putting yourself into the shoes of Niko's parents, how it must have felt to have unknowingly raised a duplicate of their daughter instead of the daughter they had known for eighteen years. Of course they're so worried, so bent on asking whether this Niko is the real one or not. You know you'd do the same, if you'd been living with people you thought were your parents.

Or your friends.

Niko's father glances over at you when it looks like you're nervous about your position in this meeting; "And who might you be?" he asks, just as much to Niko as to you. "Are you one of Kanna's friends?"

You nod your head. "My name's Kazumi," you say, introducing yourself to Niko's father the same as you did for her mother. "I'm one of Niko-er, your daughter's, friends." You don't feel comfortable using the name Niko's parents gave her. Not because there's anything wrong with it, but because that isn't Niko's name. Sure, maybe it's the name she was given when she was born, but it's not the name she identifies herself with now.

Is that actually healthy of you, to be enabling Niko's delusions like that? Is it good for you to call her 'Niko' like she's asked to be called, or would it be better for her mental health in the long run if you called her 'Kanna'?

… Oh, good lord, this is exactly the issue that Mikuni ran into before, isn't it? Why'd you go and tell her off for calling Niko by her birth name if you were just going to run into the exact same problem yourself?

"Niko?" Niko's father raises his eyebrow, and directs his attention to his daughter. "Are you still on about that, Kanna? We told you, we don't care about what happened back then; we just want our daughter back. Don't go acting like you can't be her because of something that happened a decade ago."

"That's not it," Niko says. Okay, so what happened a decade ago, in that case? Was Niko messed up before she started working for Saki? Just what the heck happened to Niko to make her the way she is? "I… I meant what I said back then, but… I don't know if I deserve to still be your daughter. I'd like to say that I want to go back to being your daughter, but… I don't know how ready I am for that yet."

You hope this conversation hasn't just taken a turn for the worse.

"I'd like to work on improving myself so that, one day, I can be your daughter again, but right now… I don't think I'm able to be Hijiri Kanna again just yet. I don't know if I'll ever be."

Do you
[ ] Chide Niko for talking negatively about herself
-[ ] But also comfort her, because you know how hard this is for her to do
[ ] Leave now, before things get awkward
[ ] Ask if it's okay to stay for dinner, so you can get to know Niko and her parents better
-[ ] Ask Niko's parents
--[ ] about how much they know about what's going on
--[ ] what living in the US was like
--[ ] what Niko was like as a child
--[ ] about what happened ten years ago
-[ ] Tell Niko's parents
--[ ] about what their daughter has been up to lately
--[ ] about the other friends Niko has
--[ ] that you and Niko are dating
--[ ] about what's happening in greater detail than what they've heard
[ ] Other (write-in)

Yesterday's update was not quite what I had hoped it would be. Today's is... Better, I suppose, in that there's actually something of substance happening that's taking care of voted-on material. We've got the choice to continue going with this train of thought, which is just as much a benefit on my end as it is an attempt to actually move forward with helping Niko- It's easier for me to write this kind of thing when I'm not in my element, and being exhausted after a long day of vacationing is definitely enough to tire me out and take me out of my element. By this time tomorrow, and definitely Monday, I'll be back to business as usual and will be ready to move on to the long-awaited rematch.

[X] Plan: Reinvolvement
-[X] Chide Niko for talking negatively about herself
--[X] But also comfort her, because you know how hard this is for her to do; just be gentle with the chiding, because heavily rebuking her has been shown to make her double down.
--[X] Affirm that actions matter more than her being, as being is only a result of actions. What she was is not what she now is, and so long as she makes amends, then the past no longer matters.
-[X] Ask if it's okay to stay for dinner, so you can get to know Niko and her parents better
--[X] Ask Niko's parents
---[X] what living in the US was like
---[X] what Niko was like as a child
--[X] Tell Niko's parents
---[X] about the other friends Niko has
---[X] that you and Niko are dating, but only if Niko's okay with it. That's really not your prerogative.
---[X] If her parents insist, and if Niko's okay with it, give them a more in-depth summary on what's going on

The important thing is that we don't scold her too hard, because as I said, that's usually caused her to double down. The important thing for family dinner is that we focus on reintegrating Niko with her family instead of using this for serious times, even if it means giving them the truth. That can come after anyways, if they're good with it; it's important to get Niko to remember her humanity and stop using her mistakes as an excuse to shirk responsibility.

I was thinking about this, and I had a question- How do we want Kazumi to deal with Niko's parents calling her Kanna? She got mad at Oriko for using Niko's real name, and Niko is still clearly made uncomfortable at the thought of having to be Hijiri Kanna again, so what's our take? Do we get mad at Niko's parents? Do we suck it up? Hope Niko can tell them off herself?
As an angry old man once said "Don't be sorry, be better."
There's plenty of angry old men in the world. Which one in particular are you referring to?

I've decided to take a third option and have Kazumi call her by a pet name. Possible ones include Nicky, Calli (in reference to her being Californian), various names that have to do with holy things (in reference to the fact that Kanna means holy), and Ms. Japamerican 9000 (if we intend to poke fun at her playfully). Of course, this only works if she doesn't deny the 'girlfriend' aspect. In that case, it might be best to ask them to recognize that Niko willingly gave up her identity for the sake of letting her clone take her place, and that she is not ever going to be the same as she was before. If they really want, they can think of it like a nickname; it's her exterior identity, even if her interior identity is still 'Hijiri Kanna'.

Now, I'm not an expert on mental health, and I assume neither are you. But in your opinion (good lord I almost wrote both 'potion' and 'option' when trying to write 'opinion') what do you think is the best outcome for Niko (and I guess the rest of her family, by extension) in terms of her mental health?
