Eh, I actually don't think it gives us much. Like at all. We are brave. We can do what we need to. This wish gives us a chance for _more_.

((On the meta level I think your wish is a net negative fun. We can make clarris do the 'right' thing. That's our job more or less. And the emotional tension is fun. Hmm. My proposal might have that last problem too.))

It's not about getting things, though, it's about making a wish that stands by who you are and doesn't hurt the people around you.

While there may be a situation that making a wish is the correct choice, now is surely not it. We don't want to madoka this, being about to jump on the wish-bomb to get out of every tricky spot. If it's something like Ryouko dead, or the world ending, or to fix everything, sure, making a wish may be needed. But Clarisse was just having a freak out, which is when QB likes to pounce and get girls to make wishes maybe they shouldn't.

[1] prepare to ask for a wish!
-[1] I wish I knew what the heck was going on!!!
[6] DO NOT CONTRACT
-[4] Cry out for help
--[3] to anyone around

--[1] to Hitomi (technologically)
--[1] (+3 -2) to Kyouko (who is not around)
-[3] Try to kill QB to death for what he's trying to make you do
-[2] run away to hide in the bathroom
-[2] ask for Machina's perspective afterwards

[3] Kill QB more if he keeps asking about grief seeds
[1] Deny anything about grief seeds

-[1] get help with this matter from a third party. Hitomi. Ryouko. ANYONE HELP.

Anyone, you say?

... Papa?

Yeah ...ultimately I agree. Just...I kind of wish Clarisse could get the idiot ball here. :/

...uh, are you saying my suggestion would compromise who we are and hurt the people around us?
I mean it would not do the first. Hmm. It might hurt the people around us. And we would think of that. We aren't that broken.

But our wants and needs are just not worth it, not with the scale of stuff depending on us. Is it stupid though to think that once we decide that, we won't have the potential anymore?

Actually...Papa might be a really good choice. His first priority is Hitomi, so he shouldn't let us hurt those around us, and he has much needed life experience. Also maybe use that trick to see if there's something simple we can do to help ourself.

I'm not trying to say that your suggestion would compromise who we are and hurt the people around us. I apologize for accidentally implying that. What I was trying to say was that the idea of using the wish as an opportunity to "gain" something was something I deeply disagreed with.

I think that both our wordings are valid, I just think that mine focuses more on being able to tackle problems, rather than trying to magically make things better. I believe in fighting for your own destiny and forging your own path, and I think that the wording of your wish implies a reliance on magic making things happen, rather than giving us the power to do what is needed.

I don't know what Clarisse's potential is based on, so I don't know the answer to your question on that front.

I want to re-emphasize that I strongly believe that whatever wish Clarisse makes, the people around her will be hurt, and that as a result a wish is not a good idea.

I do say that breathing was overrated but Clarisse is turning a funny shade of blue rigth now, so maybe not best idea
[
x] breathe
[x] take beatrice and use it to reyect the contract
[x] go raid the Shizuki kitchen for the heaviest alcohol you can find

Look, the last time we voted to breath, terrible things happened. Lets try rampant panic instead, maybe something nice will happen!

You also voted to orchestrate "Alternate Future Movie Night," dissuade Sayaka, interview everyone else to figure out what they'd wish for, and a bunch of other things. It clearly wasn't all that important of a priority, or I could have cut some of that other stuff out. :p

[X] Wish that you could keep Ryoko and friends happy and safe from all threats past, present, future, and outside and that we could bring them home and back.

That's less than 6!
Thought it over and felt I should explain somethings.
First, keeping Ryoko and friends happy and safe is not protecting them, it's basically summoning and healing them were my thoughts. Say they die or turn into a witch or get trapped or something else, we extract them safe and happy.
Second part, time travel to a time and place we have been in ignoring conventional time. Our future may not exist anymore but that doesn't mean it definitely doesn't. And going back and forth is better than just being stuck one way or another. Also more physical time travel than mental.
Theme is extraction.

Well I was trying to alter the moral nature of our existence...and I think that's flat out impossible to do with our own actions? Maybe? extra temporal effects are weird.

On the other hand..I just honestly think your wish doesn't give us something we need. That is its wishing for something we can get for our selves, easily. Like we might as well wish for cake then.

If you can find a wish that gives us something _useful_ (and that doesn't make our job as questers too easy, as many of the modifications/extensions of your wish to something worthwhile I tried to think up did.) and isn't relying on magic to just solve our problems.

(Although wishing that its okay to be, need, and want what we do, doesn't mean its easy.. Just not..a mistake/moral disaster.)

I mean that's fair, but I don't agree. I think that Clarisse is afraid of her feelings and afraid of what they might mean. I think she's comfortable with some things and deeply uncomfortable with the others, and I think that something that would help her would be to have the ability to face the things that make her uncomfortable and frightened without flinching away.

Honestly, it does sort of seem like we just have very different points of view on the situation, and that's going to be very difficult to resolve. Ultimately it's not that important either, I don't think. I think the overwhelmingly superior choice is to not wish at all, which I think that you support.

Yeah...I wish it wasn't the superior choice, but it is.

Look, Clarisse just found out that magical girls eventually become witches, and that the only source of cleansing in this reality is Grief Seeds that come from witches. It should just take her a few moments of quick calculation to realize that such an ecosystem is in no way sustainable: it's like a population trying to feed itself entirely through cannibalism.

The more magical girls we have, the sooner we come up short on Grief cleansing and somebody witches out. If Clarisse thinks about it, she should realize that making a wish will hasten Ryouko's death.

[P] I wish for a new system where Ryouko and me and everyone else can live forever through post-scarcity, where magical girl health is solved.

[P] I wish to control grief! My own! That of others! The grief of the Witches! All of it!

There's ways to break the system, but at what cost?

[X] Kill yourself

If we destroy our body we will get back to Ryouko's body and everything will be alright with the world.

That's just my initial reaction upon reading the post, give me some time as I read the rest of the discussion that followed.

Okay, let me clarify.

Becoming a (sort of) human has compromised our ability to fulfil our prime directive (which is protecting and aiding Ryouko).

We have several options to handle this conflict:

Mundane options:
[ ] Live on with that contradiction, attempting to both live for yourself and for Ryouko.
[ ] Change your standard behaviour from now on
-[ ] At all times have at least 50% of your processing power focusing on Ryouko and acting out your tactical computer duties
-[ ] Start a subroutine that examines your own behaviour and notified you when your decision making process is compromised by your human body and thoughts
-[ ] Make sure to activate emotion suppression mode on your human body if you ever think it compromises your decision process

Wish options:
[ ] Make a wish
-[ ] "I want to become a real girl!"
-[ ] "I want to protect and help Ryouko without doubt in my heart"
-[ ] "I want two of me to exist. One for Ryouko, and one for myself"

The extreme mundane options:
[X] Kill yourself
[ ] Ask Ryouko to tear out and destroy the parts of Clarisse that are within her body
-[ ] Nanami can create a new tactical computer for Ryouko

Wish options:
[ ] Make a wish
-[ ] "I want to become a real girl!"
-[ ] "I want to protect and help Ryouko without doubt in my heart"
-[ ] "I want two of me to exist. One for Ryouko, and one for myself"

To be clear that is what my wish was trying to solve. Well that and that our existence is kind a moral disaster.

-[X] Keep a few Ryouko Directive Nodes warm at all times.

I think Ryouko would wave us off everything else. This is also an understatement. What would future!Kyouko do? Wait. Bad example.

What would mature!future!Kyouko do? Deal with it.

TL;DR: Handholding, soldier. Handholding.

My heart, Itaywex
You can't just start a post like that
I trusted you :O

Mostly I wanted to say this update was absolutely amazing. Above and beyond. The kind of chapter that makes me really appreciate literature as a whole -- a "this is why I read" kind of update.

Now opinions, opinions.
This has already been said and it seems like we mostly agree on this, but I'm going to argue for it anyways. Why does our wish have to be relevant to the identity crisis we were just having? This is the kind of thing that's very hard, and painful, to solve, but it's something we have a good chance of solving and furthermore, it's an opportunity for growth. I think this is something we should solve ourselves.
If we make a wish, shouldn't we be more ambitious? Shouldn't we try to cash in as much of our potential as possible, and use it towards solving the myriad other problems we have where a wish might make a difference?
<Nanami> this situation?
<Nanami> it is an absolute clusterfuck
<Clarisse> Yes!!
<Clarisse> Hello :)
<Clarisse> Welcome to my world
<Clarisse> Glad to have you on board :)
<Clarisse> Fortunately, clusterfuck mitigation is one of my specialties
So we should probably make a wish relevant to clusterfuck mitigation, if we make a wish, is what I'm saying.
That said,

[x] DO NOT MAKE A CONTRACT
-[x] But ask Kyubey if this is a Mami-style one time deal. Carefully. He's slippery.
[x] Link back up with Ryouko immediately and keep her informed.
[x] Breathe. We're being coerced.
[x] Don't make decisions about who and why we are yet.
[x] Pick different philosophers to turn to in our philosophical plight! Plato and Socrates -- there are more relevant and more polished systems of thought for identity and bioethics even in 2011, never mind the 25th century.
[x] Still looking forward to that movie night

Maybe I missed this, but why would we cry out physically for help? The only person in this household who can see Kyubey is Ryouko, and we have better ways of contacting her that don't wake Mrs. Shizuki up.

-[ ] wish to do the thing
Is this an omake? Because if so YES and if not NOOO
