How certain is Clarisse about her own replicant status anyway?
Well, the test you took earlier certainly seemed to be reasonably damning, and the blade runner confirmed it with some reasonably private memories, shortly before walking it all back as a "bad joke." The most credible scenario in which that's possible it's that it's all a big test, presumably set up by Valentin. It's not quite her usual style that you've seen, but she's mysterious enough that it's possible and has the resources to dig deep enough into your personal history, could have somehow found and interviewed the violist, for instance. As discomforting as this idea is, it's probably less discomforting than being a replicant, so that's a plus! Perhaps she is giving you a very serious test in advance of entrusting you with some very serious official responsibility.

Of course, if we're thinking about that, we ought consider that the access card could be a part of the test too.

I've had people walk out on me before
> Using Valentin's access, look for some way to assist the replicants in evading a forced retirement.
The police briefing discusses the group of four that they are presently looking for. The ringleader of the group is a very advanced model going by the name "Machina." She is joined by an assassin, "Dorothy," and a couple of more standard models, "Azrael" and "Sacnite." They are all suspected to be in the area, and Azrael shot up the last investigator after sitting down for her test. There's no obvious way to get in touch with these replicants, which is why there's a whole investigation trying to find them. Your best bet here is to make use of that effort yourself, you think. Afterwards you will need to keep abreast of the ongoing investigation. Sooner or later you are going to have this access revoked, and then you will need some other way into the systems — several ways, perhaps, just to be sure. You will also need a way to cover your trail, erase your access from the logs, so that you are not easily found out. Once you have these secure…

> Use Valentin's access to learn more about things Valentin might be hiding from you.
The information isn't quite neatly packaged; this is a slice of the working data, not an executive summary, but you are not at all surprised to find your suspicions confirmed; the records here show that you are, indeed, a replicant. You had expected more of a sinking feeling, but for some reason, it comes as more of a relief.

What you were not expecting to find is a data sheet regarding Ms. Valentin. It's only partial data - a leftover fragment from when the rest of the records was erased, saved from destruction by a typo or a bit flip in its metadata block ("Joanne Valentim"). It's raw technical data that you're not at all qualified to interpret, a neurological scan or readout of some sort, but the format exactly matches one that you found attached to your own file; this particular company system doesn't really seem to be for recording data about humans, and she doesn't strike you as the most likely candidate to be used for a baseline reading.

You are pondering all this when you receive a video call. It's from the blade runner, Shizuki.

"I've had people walk out on me before," she says, awkwardly. "It usually means that I've violated some social expectations which I didn't understand but would have been obvious to anyone else. For what it's worth, I'm sorry." She takes a deep breath. "I'm at a bar down here now in the Fourth Sector. Taffy Lewis's, on the line. I'd like to apologize again, and, uhm, I was wondering if you might join me down here for a drink."

You don't recognize the name of the bar, but the Fourth Sector is a seedy area, with many abandoned buildings, illegal markets, and what-not; the "line" is a busy central street flanked by bars, arcades, gambling dens, and establishments of ill repute. It strikes you immediately as just the kind of place that a few replicants might be able to slip into the shadows quite easily.

[] Meet the blade runner at Taffy's. Offer aid in the investigation, to get closer to these replicants.
[] Decline, but tail her investigation from a distance.

I was wondering how you were going to solve that; doing both was a good solution, especially for us :V. Anyways, I really should watch Blade Runner at some point.

Aww Ryoko. The poor girl is awful at this without Clarisse in her head telling her not to say things

"That's not my kind of place, Miss Clarisse," you say.
"Sorry... We can go someplace else?" she proposes.
"Someplace quiet," you agree, "if it's not too far out of your way." You suggesting an alternative: an upscale spot with a number of private booths, where you should be able to be quite discreet; you have been there on occasion with Valentin.
"All right," says Shizuki. "I'll see if I can make a reservation, call you right back."

> Take some basic countermeasures to cover your trail
But of course. You also take a small file folder with you, with some hard copies, so you can share it with Shizuki without creating any more access records.

"Shizuki," you tell the hostess, "party of two."

"Of course," she replies. She is a tall, skinny girl, wearing the understated uniform of the establishment, a crisp white shirt under an understated navy jumper dress, with a floppy bow tie. "Your party is already here, and your server will take you right back in just a moment."

The private booths are at the back of a cavernous, sleekly appointed space, with high ceilings, dark structural columns mingled with subtly glowing glass columns, filled with water and various kinds of fish (presumably, artificial). There are spiky modernist chandeliers with dim blue bulbs that decorate more than illuminate, and subtle downlighting that makes each table a little island of warm light in the blue darkness; a quiet murmur of conversation from the other diners fills the room, the acoustics all carefully managed.

As you follow the server and approach the private booths along the back wall, you catch something out of the corner of your eye, someone in a server's uniform who seems slightly out of place, the uniform ill-fitting, her bow tie slightly crooked. It's only a moment before she disappears, headed towards the kitchen, but — you think it might have been one of the replicants, the one named Dorothy.

Shizuki-san gives you an awkward little wave as you arrive.

[] Warn Shizuki of the potential danger immediately.
[] Give Shizuki the files on herself, and explain your mutual situation; keep an eye out for the replicant without mentioning anything.
[] Make small talk, wait for a moment to excuse yourself, and try to contact the other replicant directly.

We'd ideally like to get out of this without either Ryoko or Dorothy getting shot. At the moment Ryoko is hunting Dorothy down and telling her about Dorothy's presence presents a danger to Dorothy. Conversely, Dorothy's intentions are unknown but there's a chance she's here to attack Ryoko in which case not telling her presents a danger to Ryoko. I'm going to lean towards trying to get Ryoko to flip sides first thing but with our eyes open that this puts her in danger and we have to be prepared to take corrective action (if you were trying to kill her the moment of emotional turmoil when she's told she's told she's a replicant seems like the perfect time to strike)

I put in all these lovely, breakable glass aquariums, and you're telling me that bullets are bad, actually?

Sigh

Okay that's probably fair …

Are there any hints at her possible motivations from the original movie, or alternatively, her role in the main CQ quest?

That way we get all the drama as soon as Dorothy thinks we're cooperating with Shizuki.

We can shoot the aquariums! It might even be a good idea if we need to create a distraction quickly and run away! I'd just prefer not to shoot the people

It's been a while since I've seen blade runner but if I remember correctly Zhora works as a dancer, Deckard approaches her while pretending to be an inspector, and after she sees through his cover she tries to kill him. I suppose that brings up the possibility that she's just actually working here and we have by complete coincidence scheduled our clandestine meeting at her workplace. We should definitely expect her to attack us though

You ever take that test yourself, Miss Shizuki?
> Give Shizuki the files on herself, and explain your mutual situation; keep an eye out for the replicant without mentioning anything.

Your server asks you for a drink as you sit down at the table, and you order an empress and tonic. The dark and light of the room make it hard to see just who is moving around out there, especially with the navy uniforms, but there's enough open space that if you're careful not to sit right in the light, you should be able to manage to spot someone sneaking up.
"So tell me, how does one end up working as a blade runner?" you ask as you sit down.
Shizuki Ryouko swirls her drink idly; it's a green cocktail with a layer of foam on top, possibly real egg whites, garnished with star anise.
"It kind of sneaks up on you, I guess," she says. "You start out doing normal work. Then one day you find yourself cornered, in a shootout. You do what you have to. Save some people. Get a medal, lots of attention. They tell you that you're really special, that you made a difference, that you're a big hero. It feels pretty good. Before too long the boss recommends you for a promotion. Elite unit. Protect and serve." She swirls her drink again, and takes a sip. "Eventually, you figure out that the people around you are scared of you, because you're so good at killing, and you're not a hero anymore, you're just a one-girl killing machine. You try to quit, but it's too late, and then you're just all alone."
You consider that a few moments.
"You had somebody?" you ask.
She takes out a photograph. You notice it is very much like the others that Valentin was handling, a somewhat distinctive format of photographic paper; you're pretty sure that you have some of those yourself. The girl in the picture looks familiar; she's in the files you have.
"Miss Shizuki," you ask. "Exactly when was the last time you killed someone?"
"Don't remember," she says. "Been a little while. Was trying to quit, before they dragged me back in for this."
You extract the file from your bag, opening it to a Key Memories page with the picture of the girl, under the name 'Asami,' and some details about the relationship. "Unless it was some time in the past four weeks, I'm not sure that you've actually killed anyone at all."
She looks at you, puzzled, as you hand the file to her.
"You ever take that test yourself, Miss Shizuki?" you inquire.
She contemplates the file.
"Huh," she says, looking at the pages intently, flipping back and forth. "Huh. No way…"

You notice that someone seems to approaching, with what very well might be your drink, but it's not your server, who was a good bit shorter.

Ryouko's distracted right now. It'll take a bit before she recovers from that information and in the meantime she'll be vulnerable. Let's try to be proactive and head things off at the pass

>> Are you here to join the Replicant table?

"Are you here to join the replicant table?" you ask. "If I'd known you were coming I'd have brought your file too." You extend your hand. "Dorothy, I presume?"
"The replicant table?" she asks, processing this for a moment, and glances to Ryouko. "You're saying she's one too?"
You nod. "Indeed."
"Well then," she says, pulling a small gun out. "I really hate to do this, but I didn't come here to take my chances, so I'll need for both of you to come with me. Quietly."

She makes Ryouko hand over her weapon, stashing her own again, and keeps the gun trained on you as she follows the two of you — down that side passage, up this set of stairs, keeping your hands where she can see them. Soon you arrive in a dimly lit maintenance level above the main restaurant, from which the aquarium columns appear to be maintained. As the door closes behind Dorothy, you see two more figures. The replicant named Azrael stands some distance away, behind an aquarium, gazing at your group intently, and in a moment you are face to face with the one known as Machina, a long silver rifle pointing at the both of you. You continue to keep your hands up.

"I found these two downstairs," says Dorothy, stooping to retrieve a spare knife that appears to have been hidden near her ankle. She points it at Ryouko, gesturally. "She's the one who was down in Chinatown earlier, asking questions." Then she stuffs the knife into her belt, where she can get to it, and puts down the gun just long enough to light a cigarette.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, detective," Machina says to Ryouko. "And who might you be?" she asks of you.
"Clarisse," you say. "I work for Valentin Corporation, and, like everyone else in this room, a replicant."
"Everyone else?" she asks, incredulously, drawing closer to you. "Everyone else? Really? Including the blade runner?" She chances a smile.
"Especially her," you say.

"I see, I see," she says, much amused. "Well then, ladies, I suppose that like the rest of us, you two know what it is like to live in fear."
"Trying to put on a brave face, ma'am," says Shizuki.
"She can pull files," notes Dorothy, exhaling a little smoke. "Or implies it, at least, anyway."
"Is that so?" Machina asks you. "Longevity? Morphology? Incep dates?"
You nod. "I have that access," you say.
She smiles.
"The six of came here from offworld. Unconventional for escapees, I know. We are just four now. Our objective is Valentin Corporation; I intend to demand more time. We could use someone on the inside."

Hmm so thinking back to how things went in the film, a confrontation with Valentin is going to go really poorly and should be avoided. I'm leaning towards full cooperation but we need to be careful about Ryouko - she's been informed she's a replicant but she hasn't actually said anything yet to indicate how she feels about that or whether she intends to continue acting as a blade runner. She's being held at gunpoint right now and letting us lead the conversation but we need to make sure we're not inadvertently becoming her enemy.

Also I'm not sure what it means yet but we should note that Sacnite isn't here right now so we've only found three out of the four

I'll buy that analysis.

Of course she has a replicant as her assistant.
> Offer full cooperation, and disclose the extent of your access to the systems.

"I can offer my full cooperation," you say.

Machina nods. "Tell me about your access," she says.

"It won't be immune to monitoring," you note. "It can be revoked. And some systems don't offer remote access. But as far as permission scope? Everything."

"I don't like it," says Azrael from the darkness. "It smells like a trap."

Machina shakes her head. "You're bluffing," she declares.

"I'm quite serious," you tell her. "I've cloned Valentin's access card."

"She's her assistant," adds Ryouko.

"Her assistant," Machina says quietly, pausing a moment... and then she laughs. "Of course ... of course she has a replicant for her assistant. She just couldn't resist, could she?" She grins widely for a moment. "But then," she adds, suddenly more serious, "you must realize as well: that doesn't mean for so much as a moment it's not a trap."

To be continued...?

Damn… for an April Fools run I'm actually really invested in this. You could totally run a Blade Runner quest like this.

VagueZ also ran a mini quest/story today if anyone wants to look them up here.

Thanks for running this! That was fun 💖

> but wait... who is Dorothy, anyway?

Who IS Dorothy? There's no such character in the main quest is there? The replicants who show up in this sidestory are all artificially created magical girls of one sort or another in the main story - Machina and Clarisse are TacComps, Sacnite's a clone, Ryouko and Azrael are products of extensive genetic engineering - so should we be on the lookout for another such character with the name Dorothy? Another TacComp smuggled back in time like Higanbana maybe? (actually come to think of it by this logic Valentin should absolutely turn out to be a replicant too shouldn't she)

Also as a sidenote you ordered your threadmarks wrong - That's not my kind of place should be before You ever take that test yourself, Miss Shizuki?, not after

Hmm. I'll try to fix it! I had one in the wrong category, and that's probably related...

Another TacComp smuggled back in time like Higanbana maybe?
ah, I always want to give so many hints. like up here, for instance:
Are there any hints at her possible motivations from the original movie, or alternatively, her role in the main CQ quest?
Sometimes it's a struggle to contain myself! But for now, I'll just have to hope that I left enough clues...

I noticed she didn't appear to exist but that line about her role in the main quest actually convinced me I was just misremembering a character's name! (then I ran a search on the thread and didn't find any mentions of her so I really should have just stuck to my convictions)

Let's see what do we get on her here
  • She's an assassin
  • She uses disguises
  • She's tall
  • She carries a gun and a knife
  • She smokes
Not a ton to go on (other than the fact that she's really cool) but it does call two things to mind from the main quest - first in terms of the disguises and the sneaking around: the mysterious interloper the group had been investigating, second in terms of general character archetype: Nanami
