As others have pointed out, the Arthwyd basically have exceptionally good light infantry and scouts (the last of these being the Cateyes and composing almost half our military) and literally nothing else. This makes them very good in rough terrain, reconnaissance, screening, and harassing, but terrible in holding the line since they don't have staying power, especially in comparison to armies which fight in close order (medium and heavy infantry/cavalry. Hell the Arthwyd don't even have cavalry, just our vassals and possibly allies) or those who are numerically superior.

What we need urgently is line infantry at the very least. Our allies can provide this, but I'd rather we have that capability, and it shouldn't be too hard acquire. It looks like we have to get faces smashed in by the Forluc in order for that to occur, though. We also should not antagonize the Lowlanders as they are basically our tripwire.

I agree, we should let Furloc attack us, it is best option we have and will hopefully solve our biggest problem.

I'm operating in the assumption that either we won't have a choice in the matter of them attacking us, or they issue an ultimatum we are likely to reject. I'd avoid war otherwise.

No one else has heavy infantry, or really medium infantry, either. None of our current enemies. Our troops are similar in equipment to all our potential enemies (except the cavalry obviously), it's organisation that is our main fault. Namely, not really having any of it. We don't have a command structure, we probably don't have logistics or information either. We need to be able to co-ordinate our troops better.

You think the Forluc are walking around with Hoplites and shit? No, they've almost certainly just got spears, shields, bows, and maces/clubs like we do. Granted, getting heavy infantry or cavalry, just some kind of difficult to defeat shock troops, would be really good, but our infantry aren't terrible.

Probably the main thing we lack equipment-wise would be good shields, and proper cloth armour. Aside from that our infantry are Achaemenid equivalents, which were well suited to their environment. Maybe Greek-style is better suited to our environment, sure, and it won out in the end, sure, but Achaemenid style equipment isn't the worst thing.

EDIT: Also better bows or javelins would be good. We've got all those things, and wicker shields, but we could have more effective javelins and bows. We've got slings, bows, and javelins.

@Oshha Is it possible to get some kind of distant communication or teleportation magic? Also are magical runes a thing in this world? Teleportation could allow us to settle more with less risk of settlements splitting. If we decide to become an empire or just settle everywhere teleportation should allow us to maintain control significantly easier.

Lowland Romance - Part 1
Lowland Romance I
Roslyn carefully looks around Caermyr as she gets off of the raft, having finally completing her journey now that she has made it to the capital of the Colryd. Placed at a point where the three largest and longest rivers in the northern lowlands met, it was already something of a focal point in the lowlands even before Queen Eira came to power and turned into a centre of trade.

Born and raised in Greenbay, Caermyr is nothing like what the Arthrynite priestess is used to. Greenbay is the capital of the People with over twenty thousand people there while Caermyr is only a tenth of that size. To Roslyn, the capital of the Colryd and one of the largest settlements in the lowlands looks like one of the minor Arthwyd settlements that she passed through on her journey down Green River.

Greenbay has a seemingly endless amount of buildings made of brick and straw and is organised into many different neighbourhoods that have their own farms and are semi-self sufficient with their own palisades in addition to the outer palisade that surrounds all of Greenbay. It is properly organised and built with the materials and methods of the People.

Caermyr is different. Beyond being significantly small, it is just more primitive in nature. It lacks the brick and stone that the People use it the lowlanders have mud huts. And just by looking at it from the river, Roslyn can tell that the entire settlement is a mess. With buildings and structures scattered about in no clear pattern, it looks like everyone just decided to put up their homes and places of work on a whim with no organisation in place. Given that the Colryd are barbarians, Roslyn wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Another thing that stands out to her that the villagers are walking about mostly have stone tools as while there are some copper tools, they are not as universal as the metal tools of the People. The Colryd villagers also look rather undeveloped compared to what members of the People that Roslyn is used to seeing in Greenbay. They are short and weak, lacking the general fitness and health of the People as they look like their growth got stunted. This is especially the case for the women as if it wasn't for having other signs of age such as wrinkles, Roslyn would mistake them for children with their short stature, their childishly flat chests and their generally lacklustre appearance.

Shifting her posture a bit, Roslyn cannot help, but wonder how much she will stand out with her height and mountains amongst these barbarians. While she is a priestess and not a Catclaw, Roslyn isn't worried about being attacked or otherwise physically assaulted thanks to the respected positions that the Arthrynite priestesses hold in Colryd society, the divine magic that she wields and the general fear of the Northern Demons held by the barbarians of the lowlands.

No, Roslyn is more worried about unwanted passes by lowlander men wanting to bed one of the beauties of the north as her own preferences are towards her own gender. That and adjusting to live amongst the uncivilised lowlanders. The Colryd are alright for a bunch of barbarians, but they aren't civilised like the People are. It won't be too bad as Roslyn will be living as part of Queen Eira's court, but she doubts that she will spend too much time here amongst the Colryd.

Roslyn heads towards the longhouse that Queen Eira rules from. Place upon the top the largest hill in Caermyr, it is a hard sight to miss and one that stands out. While Roslyn expects to be staying with the other Arthrynite priestesses, she also knows that she will spending a lot of time in the Queen's long house as part of her new duties.

***

Roslyn settles down in a seat away from the centre of the long hall as the patriarchs of Caermyr mingle with Queen Eira and her court. While the queen has them fighting each other for her attention and a couple of her fellow priestesses are also mingling, Roslyn has decided to stay out of the way.

It has been close to a season since she arrived in Caermyr and Roslyn would happily stay away from all of these boisterous social gatherings if it wasn't for the fact she needs to attend some to avoid being rude. That wouldn't be too bad except Queen Eira holds one almost every day as she picks her partner from the night so Roslyn still ends up regularly attending them as she goes to about one in every five.

She doesn't enjoy, especially given the barbaric nature of the Colryd. While no one has truly tried to force themselves upon her or any other Arthrynite, on more than one occasion, a drunken man has tried to get touchy with her. Thanks to the politics of the situation, Roslyn has had to endure having her bottom grabbed or one of her breasts groped on more than one occasion without punishing the offender in response.

So now, she just attends without partaking as she is technically here and not snubbing the queen with non-attendance, but she also doesn't get involved with the ongoing of the event either. So she sits out away from the main affair and just waits out the evening. She planned to do that tonight before Wyrn decided otherwise.

"Hello Roslyn," says a soft purr of a voice and Roslyn turns around to face Katryn, the youngest of Queen Eira's adult children.

Like her mother, Katryn has the Gift of Urth and is a great beauty by the standards of the evil despite her unnatural nature. While she lacks the muscles of the People thanks to her physical strength being based in magic, Katryn is still tall and curvy with a chest big as those of the royal family. Even her long black hair and sometimes glowing red eyes are something that Roslyn finds attractive in an exotic kind of way.

Charming and adventurous, Katryn is the sort of person that Roslyn would like to be the Evalyn of except she knows for a fact that Katryn doesn't share her preferences in sexual partners. She has watched Katryn leave her mother's parties with male partners for the night on more than one occasion.

While Roslyn could get to know Katryn as a friend, she has generally kept away from the dark beauty out of a desire not to cause herself pain by being so close to the thing that she desires while she is unable to have it. But now Katryn has approached her.

As she looks over at Katryn, Roslyn cannot prevent her eyes from straying. Katryn is beauty and unlike civilised people like Roslyn who cover up their divinely given curves as is proper, Katryn does not. Instead, she wears a skirt around her groin, but otherwise, she wears only jewellery with a silver bracelet with implanted gems on both wrists while a golden necklace with a large white and oval gem, falling down to just above her cleavage, which is uncovered and bare for all to see, including Roslyn's eyes. It was a barbaric way of dressing, but one that Roslyn enjoyed as it let her eyes take in Katryn's attractive looks.

"Hello Katryn," replies Roslyn, forcing her eyes away from Katryn's generous and naked chest up to look the daughter of Queen Eira in the eye, "What can I do for you?"

Katryn gives a sly smile as she leans against the wall of the longhouse and place an arm under her chest, emphasising it and lifting it up a little as while her chest is on part with a member of the royal family, Katryn doesn't have Arthryn to hold her mountains up. Against her will, Roslyn's eyes move back down to her chest for a moment and the smirk on Katryn's face as she looks back up tells Roslyn that Katryn planned for that to happen.

"I was just curious about why you avoid me even through you made it clear that you wish to make love to me," asks Katryn and Roslyn realises that she has not been as discreet as she thought she had.

"I have noticed that unlike myself, your preferences are for men," answers Roslyn, flushing red with embarrassment at being called out like this, "Since you are unattainable for me, I figured not to cause myself pain by being close to something I could not have, but still desired anyway."

"That is a fair way of seeing things," muses Katryn, "However, I have a proposal for you. Part of the Gift of Urth lets those with it drain blood of others to replenish other magical power and heal ourselves in addition to acting an additional form of
sustenance
. While we can drain our target dry, we can also limited ourselves to non-harmful amounts and heal the blood loss that we have inflicted. If you were willing to let me try some of your blood, I would sleep with you in exchange."

"And is there any drawback to this?" inquires Roslyn as while she is sorely tempted by Katryn's offer, she is wary of letting her blood be drunken.

"You would have to trust me not to drink enough to harm you," answers Katryn, "Or maybe not in your case since you have your divine magic and goddesses to protect you. In any case, I would not drain one of your people dry of their blood or otherwise kill one. Your people would try to hunt me down and I do not fancy my chances against the Northern Demons. I would also not throw away my comfortable life as if I was to invoke the fury of your people in such a manner, mother would turn on me in order to keep their favour."

"I see," replies Roslyn, "And while I do trust you, I must still decline. I may long to be your lover, I am not interested in a one night affair. If you want to reach my summit, you will need to climb my mountains first."

"Your mountains eh?" replies Katryn with a sly smile as she gazes at Roslyn's chest, "I am not too familiar with northern slang, but I assume you are referring to those bazongas on your chest. Does climbing them mean physically getting hands on or a metaphor for something else?"

"Metaphor," answers Roslyn firmly, "You will need to make the effort of seducing me and proving your commitment before you can earn the prize of sleeping with me. Or in your case, drinking some of my blood."

"That sounds reasonable," says Katryn, "I did hope that you would hold true to the stereotype of northerners being willing to casually sleep around, but I guess you can't all be like that. I can't say that I don't like the idea of a chase. The best things are ones that you have earned the hard way. Still, there is a slight problem?"

"And what would that be?" asks Roslyn warily.

"As you have noticed, my preferences are towards men rather than women," explains Katryn, "When I offered my body up to you, I planned to use magic increase my lust like Mum does so that I don't get who I sleep with so long as I get lain while the magic is active. But if I am to make a campaign of seduction against you, then a different method is in order. Give me a day or two and I shall begin to climb your mountains Roslyn."

With another deliberate shake of her chest in a successful attempt to draw the involuntary attention of Roslyn down there, Katryn strikes away with a smug smirk on her face, leaving Roslyn to wonder just what she has gotten herself into.

This should probably be sustenance rather than substance.

And I don't trust the vampire. I doubt it's just sustenance or mana replenishment

As the seasons went on, it quickly became clear that bronze was a superior metal to copper even if it was hard to make and not as much could be made. Just as copper tools had replaced stone tools, bronze tools had replaced copper tools.

It wasn't just the introduction of bronze, but things became more organised over time as the People could handle more things than before. More could get done compared to past generations and the People were capable of accomplishing more than any point in the past.

One result of this new organised was the construction of the Grand Sacred Forest. When it was thought up countless generations ago, it was thought to be a hard project that would take several generations to complete. Yet when the People have done it now, it took only a single generation to finish.

The Grand Sacred Forest, hopefully the first of many, was planted in Greenbay, the capital of the Arthwyd as had been originally planned by Malbyn the Explorer, mentor of Cadlon Evalyn Boarslayer.

Greenbay was the largest settlement in the known world with over twenty thousand people living in it. Unlike the settlements of barbarians, Greenbay is like all of the Arthwydish settlements and is strictly organising into different neighbourhoods of semi-self-sufficient mini-villages.

The Grand Sacred Forest is was just a matter of strategically planting trees throughout Greenbay to get a sustainable forest that didn't disrupt the village whilst keeping it as something that would get recognised as a forest.

The end result was a mass of trees scattered about Greenbay and collectively, they are sacred to Arthryn and her Daughters like a shrine or temple. While the Cursed Forest was no longer ruled by evil tree spirits, the Grand Sacred Forest is the opposite of what it used to be. The trees will still be used by the People, but it is the priesthood that will determine when they are cut in accordance with the wishes of the goddesses.

To help with the construction of the Grand Sacred Forest, the People adapted some of the fertility magic that the Caradysh had provided them with. While they were able to adapt the fertility boost into the Ymarnite Divine Magic thanks to Ymarn being the Goddess of Life, they were able to adapt that magic from usage on people and animals to being used to speed up the growth of plants such as the trees of the sacred forest.

The completion of the sacred forest wasn't the only thing that the People did that generation. To help fulfil the requests of the crafters to find a source of tin in order to make more bronze, Cadlon Varthryn organised several expeditions into explore the Sunset Mountains. Unlike the Sunrise Mountains, which has been explored to some extent, the Sunset Mountains are almost a total mysterious to the People.

Cadlon Varthryn hoped that just as they had found a suitable location for a copper mine in the Sunrise Mountains, they would find more potential mines in the Sunset Mountains and perhaps other secrets. To this purpose, the expeditions of Cateyes and hunters went looking around the areas of the Sunset Mountains.

While it took a good many seasons, the expeditions proved more successful than Cadlon Varthryn or anyone else had hoped. Not only did the explorers find one potential spot for a new mine, but they found a second one as well. The explorers found both the much-desired major tin deposit for a tin mine, but they found several major veins of gold for a gold mine.

The People were overjoyed at these discoveries. The tin mine would ensure that they would be able to produce significant amounts of bronze while the gold mine would ensure that the People would be wealthy compared to their neighbours.

The People also send overtures to the newly formed Coltyre Confederation in the eastern lowlands. Cadlon Varthryn and the Arthwyd hoped to find some allies against the Forluc over there or at least to kept the Coltyre from strikes at the People while they were distracted by the Forluc.

Unfortunately for the Arthwyd, they were unable to make any significant progress. The Coltyre lack a centralised leadership like the People or the Caradysh or the Colryd and are instead ruled by a collection of various Boarfolk tribes. Because of this, they were only able to make contact with a few tribes and those they did reach, the Boarfolk won't interested in the People.

They were too focused sorting out their internal affairs and while they weren't interested in attacking the People or the lowlander tribes to the north, they also weren't interested opening up friendly ties with the People. Despite their best efforts, the People would just need to wait until a future generation to see some success.

There was also news from the south. The Maradysh were still suffering bad weather and while the situation had gone as bad as it initially was, they are still focused on getting by over anything else. And while the Caradysh have been quiet in the Cursed Forest, the Colryd Kingdom has been very active in the past generation as a new warleader had risen amongst them.

Vath was a man of both a silver tongue and warrior's mind, easily one of the great men of alive. A loyal servant of Queen Eira, he rallied up a warband before marching on some of the neighbouring lowlander tribes. The success of Vath was a two-fold thing as first he crushed their forces on the battlefield before convincing the bested tribe to voluntarily join with the Colryd through a mixture of military prowess and a charming charisma.

Recruiting warriors from both the defeated tribes and getting more volunteers from back in Caermyr and getting tribute from the conquered villages, Vath carved out a small empire for the Colryd out of the lowlander tribes. Within a generation, the lands of the Colryd had increased at least fivefold and that was thanks to the efforts of Vath.

While a few found this worrying, most felt that it was a good thing as it meant that the Colryd would be a stronger ally of the People and by using Vath, Queen Eira would be able to dominate the northern lowlands.

As generation began, Cadlon Varthryn just had to decide upon the next course of action for the People. The Arthwyd could focus on the home front as they prepared for future conflict by building infrastructure such as a new mine in the Sunset Mountains and some more palisades in the Greenbay region or perhaps they could pay some extra respects to Arthryn and her Daughters.

Other possibilities included engaging in diplomacy by reaching out to the allies of the People to strengthen the ties with them or perhaps studying magic so that they could make use of the magical knowledge that the Caradysh had given them. Another option was to explore the coastlines to further the People's knowledge of what was up in the north with them.

Okay, so you got the Sacred Forest done and got a crit on exploration, giving you two good mine locations. Unfortunately, the Coltyre have rejected diplomatic overtures while the Colryd rolled up a Diplo/Martial Hero and decided to use him to carve out an empire. Even without the Martial Hero bonus, they still got a critical success on their war role so Vath just turned a major success into an overwhelming success.

You have always entered the bronze age and have met the requirements for government and economy upgrades, giving you some more actions and room to safely expand. I will also be changing the time frame of each update from 25 years to just 20 years after the next update. There may be other stuff, but it is late and I want to get the update tonight so I am cutting the author's notes and proofreading short.

[X] [Mega] Unlock another Divine Blessing.
[X] [Mega] Upgrade the Blessing of Arthryn.
[X] [React] Focus on the magical knowledge ([SEC] More Farming, [MAIN] Study Magic)
[X] [React] Focus on exploring. ([SEC] More Fishing, [SEC] Explore Lands = Western Coast, [SEC] Explore Lands = Northern Coast)

These are the main actions that appeal to me.
Unlocking another blessing is a dice roll, but it lets some of our other Goddesses have some influence on our civ.
Magic will let us convert a lot of the useful stuff we got from Urth, and exploration could find something really good just out of reach that we didn't know about (like we just did with these mines).

Urth Currently has a better blessing then we do, its time we take back the advantage.
Also if we get tin we can ensure that we can make large quantities of bronze as copper is easy to find whereas tin is not.
