Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

For anyone not in the discord you should probably be aware:
This is now a Naruto cross over, Orochimaru was Jama Suru, Sasuke as Iuchiban, the 9 Tails has been missing since Kaneka died, and we need to figure out who is Scorpion!Danzo before they ruin everything.

What is Love?
High Summer, Imperial Quarters

Its too hot to do anything. That was the consensus of everyone as the lazy summer months rolled on. Spring, Autumn, even winter saw a great flurry of activity, but in the middle of summer, it just sort of stopped.

People spent time in cool pools of water, or under the shade drinking various fruit juices, anything to avoid the court and its stifling multi layered kimono.

You however, were the Emperor and the only real way to let yourself relax that much was to take a different option entirely and not leave your quarters, where
the water kami in the air are being directed to cool your room. It was a wasteful thing...but you indulged in the high summer like this.

Leaning back on the soft futon, you look over at the woman beside you. Ayumi's mask long since discarded here in the most private of places. Warm brown eyes gazing up at you with love. Love that you were returning, but was it enough, could it be enough?

Sitting up, Ayumi moves under your arm. Nuzzling into your chest for warmth as she looks down at the scattered remains of your sheets strewn about the chamber.

"What are you thinking?" You ask.

"I am thinking that my Emperor is as virile as the day we met." She says teasing.

You squeeze her hip a little at that.

"Tease"

"If my Hisao did not want me to tease him...then I would be very sad." She says.

You chuckle, and kiss her on the forehead.

"What were you thinking of?" She asks instead.

You blink.
"Honestly, I was just watching you move, and enjoying the cold"

Ayumi smirks and stretches her neck a little exposing the love bites you had left there.

"While I am glad that you still enjoy my body, tell me what was really on your mind" She says.

You run one hand along her spine enjoying the small goosebumps on her smooth skin.
"I was thinking that I loved you, but I didn't know if I loved you enough." You say.

For a moment thought leaves as Ayumi moves around from your side to straddle you as you watch. She leans in and kisses you, a gentle but insistent kiss that gives no option but to kiss her back as you wrap your arms around her.

She breaks the kiss and rests her head on hers.
"Remember what you promised me?" Ayumi asks softly.

"To love you no matter what happened."

A smile from Ayumi as her brown eyes fill with conflicting emotions.
"I never hoped you would love me at all...and I was never so foolish as to think I could replace her."

A hand goes over your heart.
"You have love to give me, you will have love to give her..." she says.

You look into her eyes.
"What about the marriage..." you don't ask but you say enough.

Ayumi flinches and then wraps her arms around you, trying to give you affection to make sure that you know, know how much you mean to her.

Like that needed to be shown, you knew, and that was why you didn't want to hurt her. Even if politics made it so you were getting married.

"I am choosing to take on faith Hisao, that you have enough room in your heart for me and your wives. Because you don't break promises, not to the people you love."

Unspoken, and you love me

You did, it wasn't the slow careful controlled burn that you had felt for Kaname, still feel, but it was there. The gentle rain soothing and caressing, demanding both nothing and everything.

"I love you" you say and kiss her on the cheek.

The smile on her face isn't something you can see with the way she holds you, but the quiet rapid beating of her heart as Ayumi hears the words is enough.

How long you stay like that in the cold rooms you don't know. You do know that whatever happens, Ayumi is yours, and you are hers...and the future wife whoever she is, will just have to share.

...and now we get to figure out how we handle the question of imperial bastards.

Adopt them?
Send them on a boat to nowhere? I admitedly don't know the Rokugani position on infanticide but that's not without precedent IRL and that opens

Send them on a boat after hiding everything, save them and proclaim them Kami-sent. Nothing wrong can happen with that.

Ayumi is an acknowledged concubine in everything but name. Simply own up to them and legitimize them or send them to the temples

Not too many people will give a fuss. Though the other clans will get desperate

Oh, I know that we acknowledge them. Legitimizing them would be a mistake, though. We already have an heir for right now, and a big part of the whole Empress schtick i the desire for a legitimate Imperial heir of the line. The overall political objective is to find somewhere useful to put them so that they have a decent life but also aren't particularly useful as pawns for a later succession war. Options include things like sending them to the Brotherhood, sending them to the Otomo, and so forth. Admittedly, that decision probably happens after they have a few more years under them.

I think succession laws are quite well established, remember when our Mother was trying to persuade us to pick up a dozen concubines?
I think it goes children of Wives, oldest to youngest and then children of concubines, oldest to youngest... then we start talking about bastards.
E: Well technically I suppose its "What the Emperor says goes" like everything else in Rokugan. But also like everything else in Rokugan you don't just overrule centuries of tradition.

Right... but currently the only tradition there is with respect to *Toturi* bastards is that they become one of the Four Winds and wage war across all of Rokugan. We do have some old Hantei Emperor traditions (send them to the Otomo!), but we've been throwing those out all over the place. I'm just saying that we're going to have to come up with a new tradition for our own dynasty.

Sending them into the Brotherhood would be a fine tradition. Its both a place that would keep them out of power, give them training and experience as warriors and leaders against the forces of evil, and it would keep them protected, just in case something horrible happens

It insures that the Toturi survives even if the Main line is extinguishes, but not in a way that would facilitate civil war. As anyone, who isnt the ruling Emperor or Empress, taking one of them out of the Brotherhood would be pretty clearly committing some act of treason and can be pretty openly shut down.

To clarify, Ayumi is already Hisao's concubine. Her children will be Toturi until they come of age and Minoru decides what to do with them. You can have plans to leave her, but you are stepping down in six years precisely so that you can ensure a stable succession. (Along with the fact that running the empire ages you like no one's business.)

Hmmm. Point. We won't actually *be* Emperor when this gets decided. We'll just be part of Rokugans "Absurdly badass old man" reserve.

My point was that this child isn't actually a bastard, not by any common Rokugani standards.

The most important strategic resource.

E: Oh hey, once we retire to a monastery we can go to Otosan Uchi and control it on Minorus behalf anyway. :D The toturi have the best Retirement Exploits. :V:V:V

About discord i clarify: we talk about some stuff, like Ayumi crush and how scorpions since to fall really hard(and this show it, there Is something....unsetting here about her, I cant said what but it is), a hypothetical Naruto xLr5 crossover, that Orochimaru with Maho Is super scary shit and Danzo Is very scorpion-like....

Ok, Maybe we were drunk, just a little bit

Fair... though I do expect that "child of concubine" by default has disadvantage in the whole position-jockeying thing as compared to "child of wife".

The biggest question there is about a Scorpion is who has their loyalty (Well, okay. With Yogo it's "have you triggered the Curse yet?", and "who has your loyalty" comes second). So far as we've been able to determine, we truly do have hers.

Oh no denying that, just there is something about her feeling that is....unsetting, I cant put my finger on it, I can feel she wont betray us, but I have this naggling sense that if she have to chose between Hisao and the empire, she would chose him without a heartbeat, which is....a lot actually.

Oh, yes. That's true. "Paragon of Loyalty" is a *thing*.

Best we make sure she never has to make that choice, eh?

Winter Court XIV: Tea With a Hint of Treachery
Kyuden Bayushi, Month of the Rat 4th day

It was confusing returning to castle that had its entire layout changed yet again. A part of you knew that it was just how the Scorpion did things, half because they liked messing with people, and half because it made them safer. It was still confusing, at least however it was drawing your mind away from the other thing suffusing the castle.

That is to say a large group of attractive, talented priestesses who were vying for your hand. Bayushi Paneki had said that if he caught anyone, that there would be hell to pay. On the other hand he was not a shugenja right?

In retrospect, the Kuni had kind of been asking for it when she walled up the Crane apartments with earth kami. Probably should not have tossed her out a window though, Hida Kuon was going to be pissed again. Well that was not your problem...yet.

With that memorable demonstration, things had settled down, mostly. Every time you went to the shrines a bevy of shugenja maidens hoping to impress you with their piety were there. Every time you went into the gardens, they were there communing with the kami to create vibrant artistic displays
It was a subtle thing and if you did not know it was happening you might have been charmed. At least after the third time that poor Kitsu's red hair turned pink for some reason.

Which brought you to where you were right now. Taking tea with Bayushi Paneki, the man has silver in his hair now, odds are that he will retire a few years after you, waiting until his son settles in before he goes away completely.

The rich luxury of Kyuden Bayushi always tread the line between gauche and tasteful and that has not changed at all. Nor has Paneki's ability to be a chameleon.

"I do hope you enjoy this blend, it is from the south, one of my own particular favourites" He says.

"Its delicious" You say. "However, I find that focusing on only one blend leads to my palette becoming stale, and unable to discern the myriad flavours in other blends.

"That is understandable, the Scorpion focus below the Spine of the world, and our tea blends are not so different from those of the Crab, or the Crane or the Mantis...but you have to focus on the north as well. Is there a particular blend you enjoy as a cleanser of Scorpion?" Paneki asks.

Do you intend to marry one of the northern clans?

That is not the question asked, but its what he means.

"No, I find myself enjoying a variety of blends, it depends on which one suits the atmosphere, but thank you for your kind consideration" You reply.

You both understood why you were not going to marry a Scorpion, with Ayumi already pregnant with twins. Twins...you had taken a long time to have Minoru and longer for Yumisa, not even a year and...you push the thought away. Regardless a Scorpion bride and concubine was bit much. Leaving aside how literally everyone would jump on the Scorpion the minute something happened to Minoru. Sometimes a reputation for being villains was a hindrance who knew?

"Of course, but if you have a preference, I would naturally as your host, go out of my way to obtain it for you."

"You are too generous Bayushi-san, welcoming me into your home and flattering me so. " You say with an easy humor.

"Ah for the Son of Heaven is anything too generous? Particularly one that has been quite kind to my Clan as we did our work"

"We all need loyal and competent servants Bayushi-san. Just as am I blessed with the skill of your clan, so I am in many matters."

"Including Otosan Uchi it seems. Truthfully, your foresight in giving custody to the Brotherhood was surprising, considering what they found" Paneki says.

Slowly you sip your tea. Yes, you had been lucky, the Brotherhood had gone over the Forbidden City with a monk's patience to properly sanctify it to the glory of the Founding Kami. In doing so they had found hidden deep in the vaults, the sleeping elemental terror of fire. It had taken many lives to put it down, but put it down they had, emerging as the undisputed rulers of the city for the effort.

Even now Sohei from the Orders of Osano-wo, Bishamon, Hachiman, and Megumi patrolled the streets of Otosan Uchi and kept order amongst the clans. A part of you wonders what the long term consequences of this will be, but for now your dynasty is safe, and nothing exploded so you are going to consider that win.

The sound of thunder cracking in the distance.

"It seems that Mantis-san has discovered who interfered with her presentation on storms with me." You comment mildly.

"Indeed, it seems so, I will have to reprimand them both naturally."

"I believe that it may be a taryu jiai duel."

"Likely, but that still needs my permission" Paneki says lightly. "In any event when we next meet for tea what blend would you like to have?"

[] Name a blend from the Unicorn lands
[] Name a blend from the Lion lands
[] Name a blend from the Crane lands
[] Name a blend from the Dragon lands
[] Name a blend from the Crab lands
[] Name a blend from the Phoenix lands
[] Name a blend from the Scorpion lands after all
[] Name a blend from one of the Minor Clans.
(GM rolls 1d10: 1 Fox, 2 Badger, 3 Sparrow, 4 Hare, 5 Oriole, 6 Tortoise, 7 Dragonfly, 8 Ox, 9 Bat Clan, 10 Mantis Clan)
[] You are not sure. (GM rolls 1d7: Number same as above for Great Clans)

AN: This is actually going to decide which clan you favour brides from, choosing Unicorn would have you meet a number of Unicorn Shugenja, Choosing Phoenix the same ect. Minor Clan rolls would only have you meet one of their shugenja, so the number is smaller, but they are not serious competitors so it can be a way of putting it off for a bit to see who emerges from the scuffle as the Front Runners from each Great Clan

Odd question but I was unaware that there are that many tea blends in the Empire. Is there some master list of tea blends in the lore?

Going with:
[X] Name a blend from the Unicorn lands

As I concede that my idea to have a crane wife to Welch out of the bargain was both not likely going to work and was poorly thought out.

Crab:60
Crane:50
Dragon: 65
Lion: 35
Phoenix: 60
Scorpion: 50
Unicorn: 40

Lion and Unicorn are the lowest and they are about the same usefulness in my mind. Just going with the Unicorn to better counter more Gaijin magic attempts instead of dumping all of it on the Jade Champion.

Fun fact, he didn't have a single gray hair before he heard what Hisao was setting up in his castle. :V:V:V

@gman391 what happens to our approvals when Minoru inherits? Do they all get reset like ours did or do they all shift towards a certain point so the clans might retain friendships and grudges if we send the relationships to extremes?

[X] Name a blend from the Crab lands

I like the Crab.

Plus, it's good to have a counter for the future Crane who will marry our heir.

...Fucking Cranes:mad:.

@keenscythe
While the l5r wiki does have a number of blends there is no master list, but every Clan has per Emerald Empire it's own preference for tea flavourings and as such, I have all of them with their own preferred blends. (Crane are traditionalists with green preference while Unicorn are heathens who mix it with chocolate etc etc)

@Dark as Silver
I intentionally had in the background Naseru giving Hisao something of a blank board. However the same will not apply to Minoru (but she will have something of a hit in approval until she proves herself...probably by killing some Yodotai or something)

Thanks in that case we ought to bump our lowest opinion. If its a 15 or 20 hit then Minoru would be dangerously low with Lion and Unicorn.
