Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

Year 19: The Princess's Tale II (Boring Meeting Anyways)
---Take after your father

20th Day of the Dragon (Early Spring)

In the end, you had opted against fighting on the front lines. While you did apparently have at least three siblings now that could take your place as heir if needed, that wouldn't be fair to anyone. Besides, you weren't going to let someone you had never even met take over the throne from your father.

No the plans to make the Empire more harmonious, peaceful, to bring back the thousand years of peace, weren't plans you could entrust to children. This wasn't one of those weird children's plays that the Dragon liked to put on.

However, you think you might have been better off gambling your life in the field. You manage to avoid rolling your eyes by dint of looking around the room instead. The stately meeting hall was in a foreign set of architecture that sort of reminds you of Shiro Moto, arches crisscross the ceiling as stained glass windows showing some forgotten hero let in the natural light. Alabaster white stone and a single heavy wooden door are your surety against attack. The only other way in really was a window up near the top, open to let air move about. You wondered if the heat was part of the problem.

You stood behind Hida Ginchiyo and her yojimbo, a Matsu woman name Kimiko. Standing beside you was your own Seppun yojimbo and an aide, a fastidious looking Crane bureaucrat name Doji Aramoro, bold name considering everything, apparently he worked as a quartermaster.

They weren't what were boring you though. This was a war council meeting between Ginchiyo, the ruler of the city (nominally) Ilyas Al-Ghurab, the Senpet general Sabola of Kuzu, the Pelmyiran generals Nicholai and Olav, and the Ivindi General, Amandra Divakar. In theory you were to co-ordinate the defense as the Yodotai made their way ever closer. In theory you were all allies, in theory this should have been done three hours ago.

The two Pelmyrians for reasons of their own both wished to command a wing of the fighting, but manifestly refused to listen to each other's suggestions each shouting the other down. You weren't sure if you disliked the broad faced and stout Olav more than the slim and whiplike Nicholai but they each made a compelling case. Sabola for his part was a nasty little man with nasty ideas, he wanted to turn the Jeweled City into a death trap for the Yodotai, let them take it and kill their army with a thousand cuts, it could always be rebuilt.

Ilyas had pointedly said no to that plan, the olive skinned older man looked somewhat effete by your standards, but he carried himself a ruler even if his power as practically little. Ginchiyo had also lambasted the plan, but had avoided calling Sabola a coward.

Then there was Amandra, who had tried to keep the meeting on track, there were a number of places before the city that the Yodotai army could be met at, the question was where. On this no one agreed at all. You were effectively being used as a subtle reminder that it was the Emerald Empire that contributed the most troops, the Emerald Empire that had organized this, and that your Father would have words if this all went as the Mantis saying went 'Tits up'

No one was willing to let anyone else be in sole command, and while Ilyas had tried to put himself as a compromise candidate, it hadn't worked. Sabola had pointed out that Ilyas had never commanded more than a guntai of troops, and that had ruined it all before it started.

So around in circles things went with no one willing to compromise, and no one to just make the call. In theory by rank as the heir of the Emerald Empire could take it, but that would engender bad feelings all around you think, in addition to not having any more experience than Ilyas. Besides, the Shogun would never go for it, so that daydream was again crushed.

You look towards the window mostly to see if there was any clouds and how long until the evening meal, but instead of that you see a face. Well, two eyes wrapped in a dark turban, you stare at him(her?) for a long moment, as if you both were memorizing each other's eyes. You had never seen grey eyes before...

The moment passes, and the figure quickly disappears? You are about to call out the strange behavior when the door to the meeting hall slams open literally kicked off it's hinges.

It's Sabolas who reacts quickest "VULPES! VULPES ARE ATTACKING!"

Ginchiyo with a show of strength slips the large wooden table up creating a wall between the door and the people. More black robed people stream in as the rest of the delegations take shelter behind it.

While for the sake of peace you don't have your katana, like all Rokugani you still carry your wakizashi, you see the other people of the council drawing out their own weapons, knives for the most part, although Amandra pulls out a strange metal whip like thing.

"How did they get through the security?" Amandra asks before using her whip sword thing to attack over the table.

Ilyas is shaking a little as he readies a wicked looking curved knife.
"Shift changes every six hours, must have ambushed the new guard before they came in...guard patrols move every half hour we just have to hold on until then"

The Vulpes launch a brace of arrows, no they weren't arrows, but like them, crossbow bolts, you think you saw some of the Pelmyrians using them. They impact on the table and it holds for now.

Olav twirls around a wicked looking straight knife in his fingers.
"Half hour, that's just enough time to get warmed up"

Nicholai is about to retort something as he readies his own knife, but before he can the Vulpes surge forward.

"Behind me Princess" the Seppun says, Nagamasa, that was his name.

His katana flashes in the dim light defending you as you grip your wakizashi tightly. You had fought countless times with your sensei, with Aoshi...and nothing prepared you for this.

The black robes flicker too and fro as Ginchiyo lifts up one of them and breaks his spine over her knee, taking his weapon as her own. The Pelmyrians might hate each other, but they seem at home in the chaos.

There's too many people to keep track of, wait Ilyas, the old man.

You look to see him being attacked by two Vulpes, he's terrified unable to move, they about to strike no you can't...

There's a scream, you distantly recognize it as your own. You aren't quite sure how you were behind Nagamas and now you have your wakizashi buried into the back of one of the Vulpes. Blood trickles down on to your hand, oh Kami you had never... FOCUS
Sensei's word echoes in your head.

The Vulpes yells something in his language as you wrench out your wakizashi from his comrade's corpse, his thrusting weapon comes at you faster than you can blink, but instinct pushes it away as you bring up your weapon again to parry.

Then he kicks you in the stomach hard, sending you tumbling to the floor, you roll out of the way of his follow up strike, kicking out at his knee. Rather than the crack of his knee snapping he rolls with it, collapsing on you and wrestling for control.

Its nothing pleasant, a desperate angry struggle, as you both bite, gouge, and twist trying to get the upper hand. One moment you manage to pin, and then the next you're desperately breaking a pin, he's better than you at this. You can see the triumph in his eyes as he finally gets a mount on you with his sword at the ready.

You can't die here....

And then all of sudden he goes slack, falling to the side, Ilyas standing behind him.

"You alright Princess?" he asks, sounding a thousand years old.

"...Hai" You say standing up and looking around.

The melee is dying out slowly. Corpses littering the floor, of your people, Ginchiyo is nursing a wounded side, and broken arm, but with one hand is still using the Vulpes sword to cut people. Aramoro the Doji stands above the too still body of Nagamasa, as Kimiko is collapsed against the wall still breathing, but clearly out of the fight with her hands held close to her stomach. Guilt already begins to gnaw at you, did Nagamasa get killed because he lost focus to protect you?

The two Pelymrians both look worse for wear with them fighting back to back against one last throng of Vulpes.

Amandra looks like a graceful, dancer, until you can see how slow her weapon moves compared to the start, how exhausted she is, too her credit there at least a half dozen Vulped clutching their eyes and genitals laid out about her, and the singular one left, warily eyeing her.

As for Sabolas...he's no where to be seen, that little bastard....

You push the thought out of your mind, as for the second time you attack an opponent from behind, you might hate the two Pelymrians, but you won't let them die. Your blade moves in familiar motions, even as the crimson warmth sprays across your kimono.

Ilyas in lieu of stabbing another man throws his weapon and Amandra's opponent, fatally distracting him.

Olav grabs one of the Vulpes and pushes his knife into the man's neck as he falls over dead.

You blink, it couldn't have been more than five minutes, but you felt exhausted... you look up at the window to see...those eyes again, this time holding a crossbow aiming at... you weren't sure, you had to stop the shot.

"CROSSBOW WINDOW" You shout even as you move.

You would protect...

Lets see

[] Ilyas
No military experience, but if the local ruler dies defence gets harder especially in a siege. Generals can technically be replaced, but puppet rulers who are decent at the job are hard to get. Plus you know, more cracks for the Yodotai to pry open.

[] Ginchiyo
We can't choose to save her. Like assuming everyone else here dies and she's the only one who survives with us, it'd look mighty sus and basically cause the allied armies to splinter apart before the Yodotai even arrives. Cant risk it. Just have to hope Crab can survive crossbows

[] The Pelmyirans
They are experienced generals and if we save them we might be able to get them to accept Minoru as a compromise leader of the army. But we'd still have the problem of them pissing about with each other fighting over the command of their respective wings. Which can fuck us real hard. Still, two experienced generals...

[] Amandra
The only one who tried to keep things together. So they have a decent head on their shoulders and their generalship is probably decent. So they look to be the option that makes the most sense. We also have decent relationships with the Invidi and needs their Sacred Ivory, but that's not as important right now.

I'm basically split between Ilyas and Amandra here. Hmm. Will sleep on this.

Ilyas heir is currently not officially declared, he has several wives and a number of children by them but his eldest and de facto heir prior to his will being read would be a young woman about Minorou's age named Nikou, Minorou doesn't know much about her personally though. Rumor is that Nikou chafes at the restrictions she faces being a princess.

So... the succession is likely to be a bit messy, and the currently most probable heir is both relatively young and has a bit of an axe to grind. Also, all other heirs are younger.

hm.

[X] Amandra

Because our relationship with the Ivindi matters, and I'm not seeing anything happening out of that line of succession that the four empires couldn't overpower if they had to.

On the bright side, fi we lose one but not both Pelmyirans, that might actually simplify things. We'd lose out on some campaigning experience, but having both of them on the field seems likely to be more trouble than it's worth.

Year 19: Princess Tale III/Emperor's Tale I
--Amandra

You don't have time to think about it, that crossbow is going to attack someone, you find yourself gambling. Amandra is the only fighter here besides you without a wound that needs a trained physician to treat, well that and Ilyas, in terms of who could chase them down, you or her clearly made the most sense.

That's what you tell yourself as you watch the crossbow hit Ilyas in the chest, the man who saved your life, crumples to the ground, he's not a fighter not the way the rest of the party is. Ilyas's hands clutch at his wound as he tries desperately to live. A beat and you find yourself rushing over to the older man to do what you can. You're no physician Aoshi was always better than that then you, but you could try, Kami dammit.

Hands slick with blood as you tear off strips of your own clothing to press against the wound. You operate more on instinct than on conscious thought as you hold the man's life in your hands. Your motions enough to keep him from bleeding out, enough to let him look at you smile.

"Stay with us," you order him. Ilyas doesn't say anything.

You keep working to try and keep the wound closed, you had gambled, but you would not loose him here, you would not fail, you were a Toturi, failure was for other people

The doors behind you swing open as finally the city guard and army guards pour in, healers close behind them.

A man about twice your age pushes you aside as whispered words to the kami fall from his lips. All you can do is watch them work.

----
3 Days later, 23rd Day of the Dragon

Ginchiyo is laying down in her futon as she watches you enter. You had been told to take a few days off after the chaotic ambush in the war hall. You had done well, better than well really, many people both older than you and frankly better would have perished.

Yet, you can't help but remember the feeling of Ilyas' life blood flowing through your hands, no matter how much you scrub.

A polite bows as you look over the Shogun. The woman isn't wearing a normal kimono rather a loose fitting gi that let's her breath as the bandages covering her torso and body peak out from under it. The Mountain Does Not Fall, that was a Hida saying...and Ginchiyo lived up to it.

"Toturi-hime" Ginchiyo says.

She forces herself to sit up, despite the apparent pain it causes her. You can only wince internally, if you had been faster, better...would she be like this?

"You did...as well as could be expected. Word is that Ilyas is going to live because of you," Ginchiyo says.

"He'll live?" you half ask half state. A weight feels like it has been lifted off your shoulders.

"Hai, they're forcing him to rest for now, but he'll live, at least until the end of the year, and by then it's no longer our problem." Ginchiyo says bluntly.

"He's in this position because my father chose him, doesn't that make it our responsibility?" You ask.

"That's actually what I'm summoning you here to do. It's clear now that there was a massive breach in security, particularly among the palace guards. The other commanders and I all agree that an outsider needs to investigate the matter." Ginchiyo takes a shuddering breath.

"Given your rank, and the fact that you foiled the assassination attempt if only a little, we've decided to task you with the duty of rooting out any remaining Vulpes in the city. We can't have saboteurs and infiltrators attacking us while we move to the front." Ginchiyo says.

You wanted to do more diplomacy, to help keep the alliance strong, but investigations? You would have people for that. You had developed more your appreciate for arts and swords than for ferreting out the truth.

"Surely there is a Kitsuki or someone like that who would be better suited?" you ask.

"There are, several, all of us offered investigators, even that rat Sabola, however, with the Sultan still indisposed, his regent, his chief wife declared she trusted the woman who saved her husband over the people she didn't know. So you're it." Ginchiyo says.

Well...damn.

"Any suggestions on where to start?" You ask.

"I'd take together your little group, and go around to the other investigators, see what they have to say. Now, I'd like to rest, so best be on your way Toturi-hime."

You nods bowing.

You had wanted more responsibility...and now you had it. Find out the hidden source of the Yodotai attackers, cleanse the city of the unseen knife, if only father had sent you to train with the Scorpion...

Well, time to get to work.

----------------------------------------------------------

Month of the Dragon 31st Day, Toshi Ranbo.

The Imperial Chancellor, Matsu Suki was still settling into being the chancellor. However, she had already proven some what more, insistent was the best word you suppose, then her predecessor. To be fair, you didn't delight in snubbing her the way that you had Jomon. Instead the one armed woman is carefully examining the board of go, as you both sit and watch. The room around you is warm and airy, as Doji Yuriko, your Advisor makes polite small talk with Suki's attendant, waiting for when her advice would be called.

Thousands of li away, the fate of your empire was being decided by people without you. There was nothing you can do about that but trust in your Shogun, and in your daughter but it still rankled.

So instead you had a different thing to focus on.

"The Dragon are insistent that I meet this Hanjeul as they call it? The new leader of the Yobanjin, did they say why?" You ask.

"Only that you would know why when you met him. The Yobanjin are barbarians, but they have recovered in strength since Sezaru's Admonishment, with the bulk of our forces out west..." Suki says.

"I always knew there was something in the north, I just never thought it would be them." You say.

"Indeed, while many of the clans wish to have little to nothing to do with the barbarians, the Dragon, the traditional wardens, believe there is much fruitful discussion to be had." Yuriko chimes in.

"So we meet with them, but where, I'm not going into their lands too deeply, and they won't go into ours." You say

"There are some suggestions from Togashi-san, the Towers of Flame could all be used to house a small delegation. " Yuriko says. "Shiro Ichiro is also..."

Suki speaks up as she places down a white piece. "The Badger want nothing to do with the Yobanjin."

"What of the Yobanjin, do they have any places?" You ask.

"Togashi-san said that the Daughters of Flame, a now defunct tribe held grand meetings near the home, at a place sacred to the Yobanjin, in Rokugani it would be call 'Ashen Plain' apparently. Not exactly hospitable..." Yuriko says demuring.

Unspoken is that you being captured by the Yobanjin would be well, a disaster. On the other hand. You place down a black stone.

"It would show some good grace, after what my Uncle did, to try and meet them in their own territory." You say softly.

"...Hai." Suki agrees, looking put out by your counter play.

Two separate questions.

Do you talk to the Yobanjin, try to meet their leader or not?
And if you do, do you make them come to you, or do you try and go to them?

[] Yes talk to them, nothing is lost by talking.
[] No they've been raiding your empire for a thousand years, you don't trust them now

---
If yes

[] Try to meet at one of the Tower of Flame
[] Try to meet at the Ashen Plain

[X] Yes talk to them, nothing is lost by talking.
[X] Try to meet at the Ashen Plain

I am clueless, this is my default answer.

[x] Yes talk to them, nothing is lost by talking.
[x] Try to meet at the Ashen Plain

When the Dragon tell you that you need to do something, no really, and it's important, you listen to them, even when they're being all cryptic.

This is one of the things that most clearly distinguishes them from the Scorpion, who are far less reliable in this matter.

Given the nature of the man who we have strong OOC reason to believe this is... I think we can trust him not to betray a diplomatic envoy.

Admittedly, he has gone through some rather significant changes along the way....

With our rotten luck, maybe we shouldn't go onto the territory of a people who, like all foreigners, don't like us.
