Burden of the Emerald Empire (A Legend of the Five Rings Tale)

I legitimately do try to explain things as they come up, I don't always succeed. (See my apparent failure to explain who the Yobajin and what the fuck Medinat al Salaam is an update ago) But I try.
And generally you succeed, the problem with L5R is that unlike other rpgs its not a set of mechanics with a default setting, it is a setting with mechanics. The difficult things for people are usually the minor things that we just assume. People can work out when the champion of the Lion clan is introduced that this guy is important and represents a group of people who call themselves the Lions. Nobody would be able to guess the refuse gifts three times thing without prior setting knowledge and theres no good way to explain this stuff without breaking the flow of the update. Of course this is generally why QMs don't make the players do it, but the point kind of remains.
I got through 3 of the clans and some of the common terms last weekend. This weekend I want to get through all 5 remaining great clans and also add into the common terms the various names and locations of the setting (Burning Sands, Yodotai, Yobajin, etc...)
And you are doing gods work.
However most people will only read your posts after reading all of the threadmarks.

Two, I can't believe it was chosen to believe Kakautsu. What was revealed of his character and the extremely suspicious timing of his revealing of the supposed plots was more than enough clue.
We only made that choice after QM revealed that one of the follow-up options was a clarification to "You can't afford to dismiss it out of hand in case it's true, but you also don't trust the man. Have it looked into quietly." - the actual follow-up vote we picked.

Urgh theres nothing I dislike as much as failed actions. It just screams waste.
[X] Turn our focus inward as Kakita Noritoshi suggests (TN 25 52% Chance)

[X] Turn to the Heavens as Horiuchi-san wishes. (TN 30, 20% Chance with one Free Raise)
I mean, technically this is the Jade Champions job anyway, dealing with these kinds of threats. I'd also be willing to spend my raise if necessary.

Are the free raises spent if we would fail anyway?
Only if it would make the difference between success and failure, or enough people specify that they want them spent.

Decided to do a vote tally as well but not needs more votes before I close it.

The Lion Clan In a Nutshell
The Lion Clan

Lion Clan-
Founded by the Kami Akodo, the Lion have served as the Right Hand of the Emperor. They are the ones who carry out the will of the Emperor, serving as his striking force along with the Imperial Legions. Strict followers of Bushido, they above all Clans strive true to its traditional values as opposed to some that follow more modern interpretations. Forthright in action and speech the Lion waste little time on flowery speech, most become annoyed with it, a trait they share with the Crab. They, along with the Crab and the Unicorn are the most Martial of the Great Clans. Average in appearance, though of slightly larger build thanks to their extensive training, some chose to dye their hair red, while for others the red comes naturally. For a long time the Akodo provided the Clan Chamion, however after the Scorpion Coup the role of Clan Champion has moved between Ikoma, Kitsu and Matsu. They are composed of four families, Akodo, Ikoma, Kitsu and Matsu, with an Ikoma as the current champion.

Akodo Family- Founded by the Kami Akodo, the Akodo Family were the traditional champions of the Clan until the Scorpion Coup in 1123. For their failure in both stopping the coup from occurring and Akodo Toturi objection to the dissolution of the Scorpion the Emperor order the family stripped of their name. They would either become Akodo Death Seekers, executed or become ronin, though some managed to hide amongst the other Lion Families. Many of those who became ronin were then ensnared by the Lying Darkness until they were freed upon its defeat by Hitomi. Now restored their family name, the Akodo seek their place in the Clan and the Empire they have declined any attempt to reclaim Clan Championship at this time. The Akodo are known as some of the premier tacticians in all of Rokugan, with the saying going that no Akodo General has lost on the field of battle. Traditional in appearance and in manner, disciplined and in full embrace of Bushido are the Akodo.

Ikoma Family- Family of the current Clan Champion, they were established by Ikoma, follower of Akodo. Ikoma was both a story teller and a warrior, strong and hungry for battle. At the same time the scars and injuries he picked up in life had a story to tell, and he would entertain those who would listen with the stories of how he gained his injuries. It is from this tradition come the Ikoma, a clan of tacticians and historians. As tacticians they often acted as seconds to Akodo generals, and during the Akodo's disbandment served as the Lion's generals. Strongly devoted to Bushido it is unwise to make light of Honor in their presence lest one be forced to defend ones words or actions. They also produce the Courtiers of the Clan, taken from those who pursue the path of a storyteller.

Kitsu Family- The Kitsu Family have what is one of the most interesting backgrounds amongst the Clan in that they are not fully human, or at least their founders were not. The founders of the family were of the Kitsu race, one of five sentient races that ruled the area now known as Rokugan in times past. Kitsu were shapeshifters, who favored form was that of a lion man, peaceful and mystical, they were hunted by Akodo and his followers, constantly attacked and killed. To Akodo they were only animals, and he did not realize the truth until most had been killed, though it is thought that Ikoma realized the truth sooner. It was during the first war against Fu Leng that Akodo offered his daughters as brides to the five surviving Kitsu who transformed into men and took his daughters as brides. It is from these unions that the Kitsu came, and they serve as the Shugenja of the Lion. In part due to this legacy the Kitsu have access and the ability to speak with the ancestral spirits, and to cross over to the spirit realms. Though this is a hidden secret some of it can be felt by others as most Kitsu seem off to other Samurai. For those with strong Kitsu blood they will have rich red hair and red-golden eyes.

Matsu Family- The Matsu were founded by the last of Akodo's follower, the Lady Matsu, in the year 15. Matsu was a warrior and a killer, and in the beginning a bandit. As she grew older she changed and settled to teach her people how to defend themselves, disdaining the killers she once fought alongside. She thus initially refused Akodo, believing him to be yet another killer until his perseverance convinced her otherwise. She participated in the first Emerald Championship, losing on the field to Kakita who refused to bow to her afterwards due to what he felt was a lack of respect she showed to her defeated foes during the Tournament. This has created bad blood between the Lion and Crane that continues to this day. Like Matsu, those of her family are fierce warriors. However they tend to focus more on unleashing their fury as opposed to the disciplined nature of the Akodo. Along with the Hida, the Matsu are the other family to have Berserkers. Still like other Lion they take Bushido seriously, and woe unto those who would question there honor.

@Void Stalker
A few things, one Ikoma Otemi is the regent for Matsu Nimuro's young son. (Matsu Yoshino is a lot younger here) Second it's probably important to note that while Ikoma are indeed quite honourable, they're also the pragmatists of the Lion Clan in so much as they have them.

Still a free raise is yours to allocate where you wish.

[X] Employ our Treasurer's idea (TN 30, 37% Chance with two free raises)

It is the best chance available to us that doesn't leave our hero completely unsupported. I like Uncle Kaneka, he's a loyal and effective supporter, and deciding to not do anything about it would be spitting in his face. I'm not willing to do that.

The Mantis Clan In a Nutshell
The Mantis Clan
Mantis Clan- The only Great Clan not to be directly founded by one of the Kami, they do have ties to one with the first Mantis being Hida Kamietsu-uo, grandson of the Kami Hida. After being passed over for Crab Champion he left with his mother and a small band of followers to found the Mantis Clan, the first of the Minor Clans, though not officially recognized as such until later. Making his home in the Islands of Silk and Spice. There the Mantis went through success and failure, serving as mercenaries for the Great Clans, ecspeially the Crane to enrich their coffers and falling out of favor when one of their Daimyo attempted to assassinate the Emperor. This state of affairs continued until the Second Day of Thunder when the current Damiyo, Yoritomo, rallied several minor clans, known as Yoritomo's Alliance, and force the Great Clans to acknolwegde the Mantis Clan as a Great Clan. As part of this they also contributed one of the Thunders who faced down and defeated Fu-Leng. Of these Clans, the Wasp and the Centipede remained with the Mantis to form the Great Clan, while the Fox and the Tortoise returned to their own paths. This changed in 1169 when the Fox under threat of the Shadow Dragon sought safety under the Mantis, becoming one of the four families of the Mantis. The Mantis are a Clan of the Seas, and maintain the largest Navy, with the second being the Crab Navy. In addition they deal far more with wealth and commerce then the other clans, which causes a divide with the more traditional Clans. The Mantis are composed of the Yoritomo, formerly the Mantis Clan, the Moshi, formerly the Centipede, the Kitsune, formerly the Fox and the Tsuruchi, formerly the Wasp. The Yoritomo are the Champions of the Clan.

Yoritomo Family- Originally known as the Mantis Minor Clan, when they became a Great Clan they took on the name Yoritomo, in honor of their Daimyo and first Clan Champion. Unique in that for a long time they had schools to train courtiers, bushi and shugenja, the Yoritomo are if nothing else adaptable. Making their home amongst the islands, it is rare to find a Yoritomo that has not sailed, and many of their bushi are trained to fight at sea. Athletic and flexible, Yoritomo bushi tend to be straightforward, much like the Crab from which many are descended.

Moshi Family- Formerly the Centipede Family, they are a Shugenja Family and also the traditionalists amongst the Mantis. A matriarchal family, they were first founded in 347, by Isawa Azami and his eleven daughters. They were given a title as a minor clan due to the distance from the rest of the Phoenix. During this time they both marched alongside the Phoenix in the 400's and in 580 stopped an invasion of their lands by the Lion. A member of Yoritomo's Alliance, they fully joined the Mantis as a family in 1133 when the daughter of the current Centipede Champion married Yoritomo. Now the women provide the mystical might of the Mantis, along with a few families from the Yoritomo. The men of the clan have adopted Yoritomo schools and work as bushi or courtiers.

Tsuruchi Family- The former Wasp Minor Clan, upon joining the Mantis they took the name of their founder, Tsuruchi. Tsuruchi was the son of a Scorpion and a Lion and welcomed among neither. Showing immense talent with the bow, he was raised by his father and mother until they were assassinated. At the same time a Lion army led by his uncle marched to seize the castle of his parent for the Lion, and to put Tsuruchi and his retainers to the death. Tsuruchi managed to escape, however the blatant violations of Bushido shook his faith and he destroyed his blade, vowing to only use the bow. Two years later in 1109 he reclaimed the castle, killing his uncle and those defending it. Despite this he knew attacks would come from both Lion and Scorpion and petitioned the Emerald Champion, a Crane, for assistance. In the end an agreement was reached with the Crane that the castle would be a permanent base for the Emerald Magistrates and attacks on the castle would be considered attacks on the Emerald Champion. He personally lead his Clan in alliance with Yoritomo, joining the Mantis once they became a great clan. Now the Tsuruchi provide famed magistrates, training they received during the time they when they were still the Wasp and considered part of the Emerald Magistrates. In addition the Tsuruchi produce some of the best marksmen in all the realm, a tribute to Tsuruhci himself.

Kitsune Family- The Kitsune Family, along with the Mantis can make claims as the first of the Minor Clan. Originally the Fox, they were founded in the year 90 from the Ki-RIn (now known as the Unicorn) who remained behind when the rest left with the Kami Shinjo. It fell upon the Fox to record and keep track of all that happened in Rokugan in order that the Ki-Rin could be informed upon their return. Forty years after the Ki-Rin departure, in the year 89, they lost their lands to the Lion, an act which prompted the Emperor to pass a decree forbidding Great Clans from invading Minor Clans. The Emperor granted them the lands of Kitsune Mori, which were inhabited by the kitsune spirits. Over time they formed a bond with the Kitsune, and some of the Kitsune took human form and married into the Fox Family. As such the Clan became a Shugenja clan, though everyone is taught the basics of combat due to the need to hunt for food and the potential dangers in living in an area where spirits can crossover. It is the Fox that first recognized the returned Ki-Rin as their long departed brethren who had finally returned. However despite this they chose to remain a separate Clan. Joining with Yoritomo for his Alliance, afterwards they chose to return to their own path. Later in 1169 growing threats against the family led to their petitioning for membership in the Mantis which was accepted. It was found that these threats were agents of the Shadow Dragon as it wished for the powers of the spirits in Kitsune Mori to further its plans. Since this setback the Shadow Dragon has not been hear from.

@Void Stalker
That's mostly right but the Kitsune have not joined the Mantis in this timeline. That storyline came about during the Race for the Throne, which for obvious reasons didn't happen here. (Hisao was there) Second it's probably a good idea to mention that the Moshi are also inveterate sun worshippers, but primarily focus on Amaterasu. The old Sun Goddess...who committed suicide.
Rokugan is a special place.

You do however have two free raises to place where you will.

Ah, was not sure on the divergence or not, the Shadow Dragon failure with the Kitsune would have explained why it moved out to the burning sands. I will keep them there until I get to doing the Minor Clans and move them to that post then. Also stick the raises on the winning option for this vote.

Will do. If you're not sure on the timeline feel free to PM me.

Well there are the Ox and the Oriole, but meh Minor Clans who cares?
Badger, Bat, Dragonfly, Hare (Usagi show up a lot), Monkey, Sparrow and Tortoise as well. Had to look up the Oriole, 1168, would they be impacted by the POD or did they get minor clan status here? For me they show up as the Tsi Family, though it looks like in 1168 they were promoted to the Oriole Minor Clan, then we have the Kaeru Family, and the Yotsu Family as well for Ronin Families that are mentioned.

I have a soft spot for the Tsi, so they still have a clan, but realistically it could go either way.

The Kami Shinjo also took out the ones who infiltrated the Unicorn, but they refuse to die, just get weakens. Though some of them were based in Medinat Salam

Aren't they that conspiracy that the Hare wiped out and the Emperor Totori decided to rant about?
Also, isn't our dynasty literally their pet project?

Can't remember what Toturi ranted about. It's not so much as a pet project, more of a support because we represent Rule of Man rather than Rule of Heaven because Toturi claimed the throne after the Clan Wars. They were further happy when Hitomi and Yakamo became the Moon and Sun. So yeah, they probably make sure the Toturi dynasty is stable if only because it supports their agenda.

The Kami Shinjo also took out the ones who infiltrated the Unicorn, but they refuse to die, just get weakens. Though some of them were based in Medinat Salam

One of them escaped and set up a base near Dragon Lands. But yes, heavily crippled, and lost their main advantage.

The one's in the Burning Sands were, Assassin's Creed people with white hoods, a mountain base, and a 3k3 bonus to shank unaware people, IIRC. But yes, their influence is much stronger in Medinat.

The kolat come and go. They're basically all about the triumph of the common man over the gods, and they're *big* into mercantile stuff. There's times where they're beaten back to almost nothing, and there's times where they have heavy infiltration into the Yoritomo and the Yasuki... and because they don't actually have any real supernatural backing, just a sort of ethos that gets passed down from conspirator to conspirator, the face of the organization, what they're really doing and what they really care about changes from generation to generation.

It's entirely possible that they're the folks helping us from the shadows on this one. The Spider get their legitimacy from the patronage of Fu Leng, and the Hantei line, after all. As far as the Kolat are concerned, we're a *much* better pick than them.

Emperor Toturi was ranting about them because he'd been infected by the Nothing, who were using him to attack them (and a whole bunch of other groups they didn't like). The Kolat are absolutely of the opinion that they want the world and empire to stick around and not collapse so that they can keep running around merchanting. They just have certain differences of opinion on the proper place of the Heavens in this whole process.
