Neither does any medicine or treatment. That it might not work is no excuse to refuse even to try.

It would be a threat reserved for if Richardson tried to get pushy about it, what with somebody from D.C. handing down orders about somebody under his command. I doubt it would be honestly necessary. He is smart enough I think to refrain from openly fighting D.C. He's already been allowed one massive breach of regulations. Best to not push his luck.
why he has more trump cards than they do... The Pentagon already burned their good will with Arizona when some REMF who hasn't had a ship command since a time when the Russians had more carriers than China decided he was going to worry more about how the history books viewed him rather than winning the war and sent an order out to have her chained to a desk when they had almost no battleships besides her. And pulling the 3rd and 4th best battleships in japan stateside after they sent us three of their own is going to have the state department delivering some nasty mail to the pentagons door.

I think its great that folks are seeing that Pennsylvania doesn't seem to be getting the best care in Sasebo. In "real life" she and Ari would probably be transferred to Everett, and Wash and Kirishima would probably be transferred to Sasebo. After all, Vestal, Sollette, and Crowning are there along with whomever they can get as a ship girl therapist.
However, going into therapy in a relatively safe environment doesn't always make for good storytelling.

The way I see Pennsylvania, she has a lot of factors feeding her anger, distrust, and instability:

1. Grief over her sister and all the others lost at Pearl. This will need therapy and finding coping tools.

2. Sense of guilt over Pearl Harbor. She was the flagship of the Pacific Fleet. I expect she has the same feeling Admiral Kimmel had when a spent .50 caliber round came through the window and grazed him. "It would have been merciful if it had killed me." She needs to do something that makes up for what she sees as a failure.

3. Failure to directly avenge herself on the IJN. This will be difficult since she probably won't get to sink Kaga or Akagi. However, if an Abyssal appeared in their form that might be good therapy for both Ari and Pennsy. Of course, getting a lead role in going after the Battleship Princess might suffice also.

4. Seeing Japan as the enemy. She needs to get to the place where she sees Japan or at least the Japanese people as those in need of help and protection. Maybe this is where the "destroyer cuteness factor" comes into play. Or maybe this is where Pennsy interacts with the public and begins to see "them" as "us".

5. Uncontrolled anger. Perhaps she needs to run into someone who has similar issues. Sometimes seeing your behavior modeled in others is a wakeup call that one needs to make a change.

If this was Harry's thread, I'd say to introduce her to the now redeemed Aso. She's seen where all that anger and refusal the leave the past behind leads. But here, I'm not really sure who would be best to help her beyond Ari herself.

Of course, there is one big issue that people are not realizing here. In order to send Pennsy back to the States and not have her completely and utterly freak out, one would need to send Ari there with her. See the problem? No?

A massive chunk of how Ari has been able to heal and deal with her issues revolves around the Richardson household and in particular Jane filling a spot in her heart.

People are suggesting to brutally, to Ari anyways, tear that away from her. To rip her away from her safe place, people she loves and cares deeply for and to leave them mostly defenseless, all because Pennsy has her own issues. To quite literally tell her that until Pennsy feels better and is "Good", she cannot go back. This is literally a case of paying Peter to pay Paul as you would have Ari now with major issues. Heck, you might see her lash out at Pennsy as she would blame her sister in this case for what happened, which would not help Pennsy in the slightest and cause major interpersonal issues around them.

The clear choice, then, is for Ari to learn about the practice of psychiatry (with the encouragement of Jane); stylish reading glasses included. :p

Arizona adjusted her glasses while looking at her notepad before glancing at her sister who was laid out on the couch. Said Battleship had a sour expression on her face while grumbling. "This is not going to help."

Lips thinning, Ari looked to the door where Jane gave her a thumbs up. Then said girl ducked out of sight which made her take a breath. "It will, I have it on authority that such things as this help out quite a bit."

Frowning, Pennsylvania continued to glare at the ceiling as if it would combust at any moment. "Yes, the authority of a little girl."

Once more, Arizona adjusted her glasses with a frown of her own. "One who has helped me..." Clearing her throat, she hummed. "Now then, tell me about your builder's dock..."

not to mention kill her (and Pennsy's by extension) trust in the navy since they made it pretty clear when she came back they didn't even want her sailing period if they could help it, and Richardson's been the only reason she's gotten any combat time.

*Hopes on SB, Reads the new update.*

FUCKING AWESOME!!!

*Sees some comments and looks back at Text again. Realizes Implication*

LOUD HIGH PITCHED CORGI BORKING!!!

Two for the Price of one Eh? YAS! Also makes sense, Whole lotta baddies sent back to the depths recently. Somethin big gonna be back from all that.
Also, if no one else gonna do it, I'm calling Dibs on writing a sidestory post of Dem SEALS. Though I'm gonna have to see if I can get some of the extended Family to help out make sure certain details are just right. Even if it is just was how it was done back in the 70's and 80's...

Nowhere did I say to not even try.

Nor did I anywhere say you did. There is no need to go seeking reasons to be offended.

My intent was to say that any treatment has the prospect of failure, but the current approach is clearly not working, and psychotherapy might be the best choice for a change in approach.

He can pull all the trump cards he likes. They don't need to rely on goodwill, nor does the fact that they work in desk postings make them incompetent. They wouldn't be making requests hoping he agrees. He would basically be issued orders to accept the presence of a vetted therapist, and possibly some assistants, on base. He doesn't have to like it.

If he thinks it is a bad idea, he may of course make this known, and if his superiors disagree then it happens anyway.

Right now, Pennsylvania is unstable. She is a danger, not only to herself, but to fellow American and allied personnel. She needs help, both for her own good and for theirs in the long run.

Edit: On further consideration, moving her to San Diego would likely be a long-term mistake. Having said that, she most certainly does need treatment and help dealing with her issues.

Richardson's personal animosity is one of the reasons I feel her treatment should be taken out of his hands, in addition to which he has a fleet to run, and no training in how to handle a horribly psychologically traumatized individual.

I have read suggestions that she should be introduced to other ships with issues similar to her own. This might be a good idea, but I would have to say only in a controlled environment.
