I still say that one day Pennsy will succumb to the lure of Destroyer Cuteness. :D Someone needs to buy her an Arizona plushie.

Hiei: You're already grumpy enough~
Mutsu: And I know you can do the voice~
Richardson: *grumblegrumble* ...let me get my scarf.
I don't think we wanna know if some kinky role-play went on there...jeez.

I did. Minion was Naka's cameraman for the wedding and later helped her to the docks for deployment after she and Jintsuu had their booze fueled mourning of Sendai.

He also threatened to give her phone to her fans or the Admiral when she refused to wake up. :p
See? He's already looking out for her. Something tells me that when the girls come back from killing Abyssmark and sister she's going to glomp Minion and kiss him. :D

I'm no naval geek, but isn't that formation rather tighter than it should be? I can tell that they are underway, based on their aft wake, though they don't appear to be moving at any great speed, due to the behavior of water at the fore end of the ship. Still, the ships appear to be less than 100 feet from one another.

It is a photoshoot formation. Looks nice, but isn't practical. Like those pictures of a USN CVBG with aircraft flying overhead.

Showing off for Brazil, maybe? Almost definitely showing off, though.

That is the sorta formation that the gunners on a battleship dream about being allowed to shoot at.
If they target the cruiser and miss short or long they are gonna hit a DD or 2.. So yeah there is no way ANY commander worth putting in command of a warship flotilla would keep his ships in a formation like that unless it was for publicity shots. or for UNREP
But I don't think Cruisers were fitted for that.. there would be no point as the cruisers fuel capacity wouldn't be that much greater in the scheme of things than that of the destroyers..If I am wrong I am sure i will be informed of such shortly..

Weren't UNREP operations always 1 ship at a time when underway, to help prevent collisions?

Good point. I do vaguely recall something about a US carrier Group testing refueling multiple ships at the same time.
but I also seem to recall the article I read it in stating that it was proven to be too dangerous and so the tests were cancelled..again take it with a grain of salt it has been years and it was only a passing reference

Theoretically, fleet oilers/fleet supply ships can refuel up to 3 ships at a time; one on each side and one astern. In practice, the maximum is usually two; one on each side.

As for the formation above, it's just for photo-op/ parade ground purposes. Normal cruising and battle formations are much more spread out.

LT: Admiral, we have five Brazilian ships twenty miles off shore.

Admiral: That's impossible! Get me the Pentagon, NORAD, and SAC! I'll need to prepare a brief for the Joint Chiefs as well. Exactly how many is a brazillion?

I may need to say some Our Aris to make up for a pun like that....

I realize this has been said, but I feel like throwing in my two cents as well.

It is a formation intended expressly for propaganda. It is never used except for taking awesome photographs to show off the nation's fleet. We do the same thing nowadays when we have basically an entire Carrier Group all bunched up in a "bullseye" formation in which every ship can be captured in a single photograph.

In any other situation, the various ships of the Group would be separated much further, potentially even hundreds of miles apart while still operating as a Group due to modern technology linking them. St. Louis and those tin cans would not go that far, but would spread out more when on a normal cruise or on combat operations.

Perhaps, although the losses at Samar are in extremely deep water, and there is also a lot of volume to search for Midway, Coral Sea, and Santa Cruz for three.

I made a rather surprising discovery of my own recently in my search for a 1/700 Butler class DE...

1/700 USN Escort Destroyer Rudderow-class (2-in-1)

This kit includes all of the parts for the Butler class as well as the Rudderow class, and you get two botes per box for $16. Now I need to find six 1/700 Casablanca class CVEs...

Oh, and the box included some Poi as well
