Engineers

Kibe Koume, 26, Office Manager
Tiny & angry, Kibe went to school in Albia, picking up the language, the religion, and a fuckload of swear words. Speaks Albian.
Mechanical +2, Ballistics +1
Office Manager: If Kibe is not assigned to a team, the Office Stress is reduced by 1.

Sakane Jun, 26, Second Team Leader
A soured patriot, Sakane is married and has a young child being raised gender-neutrally. His two brothers who fought in the war.
Structural +2, Aerodynamics +1
Team Leader: If there are any additional projects, Sakane will lead them.
Joinery: Sakane has training in the traditional Akitsukuni carpentry art of joinery, creating complex self-supporting joints with no fasteners or glue. When working with non-monocoque wooden spars or ribs, +1 Structural.

Tezuka Kenji, ???
A stoner with occasional flashes of insight. Nobody really knows what he does, but he's probably useful?
Aerodynamics +2, Chemical +1
Flashes of Brilliance: Each natural 10 rolled by any team Tezuka is assigned to gives +1 forward to the next research roll.

Hasegawa Morio, 26
A hopeless nerd with a photography habit, mostly on account of developing his own film, Hasegawa seems to do nothing but work and stack card houses, but somehow has an incredible attractive boyfriend. Speaks Gallian.
Chemical +2, Ballistic +1
Silent Workhorse: Hasegawa can work on two different projects at once for no cost to Office Stress, providing they use different stats.

Kawamura Yosai, 25.
Serially successful womanizer and incredibly attractive, Kawamura doesn't seem to have much of a personality outside of seducing women. Well, except for that time he seduced Asuka, which nobody talks about. Speaks Dyske.
Structural +2, Electrical +1, Social +1
Easily Distracted: If Kawamura is working on the same team as a female or non-binary employee, the team is at -1d10.

Koide Hatsu, 24.
One of the few female graduates of an Akitsukuni engineering school, Koide is brilliant and incredibly driven, but her first job at Akibara was both humiliating and exposed her to an abusive coworker. Her father is a rich businessman with factories in Joseon, and she's engaged to Ken from Castles of Steel. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +2, Structural +1
No Sleep: If you let her, Koide will work herself to death. She can work a second project for no Office Stress, but all her stats will be reduced to 1 for the routine.

Kobayashi Ayao, ???
Disowned heiress of the Kobayashi family, all Kobayashi wanted was a career and to be a modern woman. For her trouble, a cousin threw acid on her, scarring her face, neck, much of her torso, and her left arm. Despite appearing serene and above it all, she's actually an avowed communist activist and baseball player.
Aerodynamics +2, Social +2

Adachi Ren, 24
Adachi learned chemistry from her father, one of the most famous chemical engineers in the country, rather than through formal schooling. She's married, has a kid, and takes spirituality very seriously. Yes, you did the math right, she had Yuki when she was 17. It's 1912, folks.
Chemical +2, Electrical +1
Young Mother: Adachi will cause double Office Stress if she has to work multiple tasks.

Uyeno Sei, Ballistics Engineer, 31.
The oldest member of the crew, this is Uyeno's second career. Her first was as an officer in the Imperial Navy with specialized technical training: her very promising career was cut short by her transition. Her work in a naval arsenal on machine-guns landed her the job here. Briefly dated Satomi (the age range is a bit creepy but again, 1912), she's missing a piece of her ear and is deaf on that side, from an exploding cannon. Recently returned from Varnmark from experimental surgery, she's known for her skill navigating gendered bureaucracy.
Ballistic +3

Mi Kyung-Jae, 23
A recent graduate of the Imperial College of Heijo, Mi is from the recently annexed territory of Joseon. For those keeping track at home, that means he's a Korean national living in Imperial Japan in 1912. We haven't seen much of his personality because he's rightfully terrified of everything around him. He has a specialty in endurance engine design and modification. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +1, Chemical +1
Endurance Engines: Mi has an excellent understanding of metallurgy and tolerances. Any engine he works on gains +1 Reliability if a 16+ is rolled.
Pulsejet Wizard: Mi is now one of the world's leading experts on the pulsejet engine. He can be given his own project to custom-craft pulsejet engines, and he gives +1 to any pulsejet-related project.
Joseon National: Mi does not have security clearance to work on any top-secret projects.

Miyoshi Shigeri, 23.
A non-binary person and admirer of Asuka's work, they were in an support role in the Army before joining the company.
Structural +1, Mechanical +1, Aerodynamic +1
Mechanic: Miyoshi has some experience repairing and refurbishing aircraft. They get +1 if assigned on the clean-up phase.

Other Employees
- Ohara Satomi, 22, Mr. Ohara's niece and the company test pilot, Ohara is a general lesbian disaster. She's good at flying planes, driving cars, and kissing girls. She's bad at being patient, being respectable, and sticking to literally anyones conceptions of gender roles. Deeply in lesbians with Coralie D'Amboise.
- Fujkikawa Sotatsu, old, modelmaker. He's an old man and toymaker and we don't see much of him because he locks himself in his workshop a lot. He's friends with Kawamura?

Assets
- Engine Test Rig (Allows engine tweaking and optimization.
- Wind Tunnel (+1 Aerodynamics)
- Rapid Prototype Lab (+1 Clean Up)
Expanded Cast

Character Families
- Matsura(?) Mizuko: Asuka's sister. Was paralyzed in an accident in Asuka's first flight. Lives Elsewhere and is married now. Can't forgive Asuka, even though she's tried.
- Adachi Motoki: Adachi's husband, an accountant. Legally blind.
- Adachi Yuki: Adachi's 7 year old daughter and wannabe pilot. Very adorable.
- Yachi's Brother: Exists.
- Sakane's Wife: Exists. Drives him a bit crazy, but he loves her.
- Yachi's Brother's Wife: Exists. Is statistically likely to be pregnant.
- Lt. Coralie D'Amboise: Gallian pilot in exile. Satomi's girlfriend. 25. Accomplished bisexual duelist. She flew in the war for a single day, and for her troubles got a hole blown in her cheek and had her left arm paralyzed.

Akisukuni Army & Ex-Army
- Lt. Torio Tanaka: Yachi's former observer as an enlisted man. Was jumped up to fly Ducks and lost a leg on his first mission. A trained painter, married to Torio Saya.
- Captain Amari Shiro: A Dragonfly pilot who ended up flying as Yachi's partner. Kind of delightfully twinky. They sorta slept together at one point, which wasn't great. He lost his previous boyfriend in the April Offensive and turned his plane into a shrine. He was shot in the gut and is still recovering.
- Major Izuhara: Logistics officer, Imperial Army, this bespectled officer stood up to the Caspian Crown Prince and accidentally kicked off the Akitsikuni-Caspian War. The guilt was so much that, after almost a year of running Army procurement, he shot himself in a phone both.
- Captain Nakai Sekien: Army scout pilot. First person to drop a bomb from an airplane, later head of the Duck Squadrons.
- Captain Teshima: A Desk pilot that fought with Yachi. Lost an arm in the process, took over for Major Izuhara after his death. Seems cheery despite it all.
- Captain Nashio: A real piece of shit dude and probably a rapist, he's also a war hero as the second-highest scoring ace on the Akitsukuni side. He was a young shitty kid in way over his head but it's no excuse.
- Lt. Kinjo: Kind of a dumb lump and Nashio's friend, one of the desk pilots. Dead at 19.
- Lt. Okazaki: Yachi's friend from before the war and pilot, he died in a spin in his dragonfly. His death probably hit Yachi the hardest.

I wonder if we can cheat a bit on this fastest plane thing. Make a modified prototype that has less crew, more reinforcement, stuff like that.

The issue is that without gearing, our currently available engines can only go up to ~230 kph before breaking due to excessive speed. Otherwise we might be looking at 270 kph at sea level before optimization if we wanted to go full madlad.

With optimization such a plane could reach 300+ at cruise altitude before any racing modifications. A purpose-built racer could likely break 400 with gearing, all our other constraints being equal.

good golly, matsura really is ridiculous, aren't they?

Birthdays and Akitsukuni Holidays
Huh, I don't think I noticed this before. Is there a reason Matsura is a year older than themselves.
I think that's just a result of the way age is reckoned in this society. Could be mistaken, though.
Indeed. In Akisukuni, your legal age gets increased by 1 every New Years. Asuka, ever a contrarian, was upset their baby sister (December 17th) got to be one year old almost immediately, while they (June 9th) had to wait six months, so is an adamant supporter of the the western system of birthdays, and a recent supporter of birthday cake.

Also yeah Akitsukuni doesn't really do birthday parties, or anniversaries, or anything like that. They also don't really have like... national holidays that much? They have Ascension Day, which is when the last Empress died and the current one was crowned, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. Everything else is local festival days of one kind or another, though an autumn Harvest Day is very big throughout the whole north. Some of the nobility celebrate some Cathay holidays when they come up but that practice has been dying off in modernity.

As a side note, Akitsukuni has been on the a solar calendar since forever (unlike real Japan, which shared the Chinese lunarsolar calender). Their New Years was what we'd recognize as February 9th in their old calendar. During the last century, Akitsukuni switched over to the Gay!Gregorian calender as part of westernization, and Feburary 9th is now something of an informal holiday for the nostalgic, treated as an excuse to go drinking.

(One of the weirder planks of the Purity Club's politics is to restore the Old New Year.)

Lunar calenders are weird. As in, they don't actually match up with the seasons and you just need to get an official to manually add in days. It's beyond inefficient.

Whoever is designing this make sure it can land on water and has a dingy in the event of an emergency.

Throttling down to not overspeed at altitude should extend the range since you're using quite a bit less power for that speed. Since range rules aren't really part of the base game but are part of this quest that could be the justification to keep the low drag airframe.

Whoever is designing this make sure it can land on water and has a dingy in the event of an emergency.
Not with this budget if you want enough range for the colonies and 200+ kph

Now, ideally we'd work out how to do semi-retractable landing gear like on the PBY Catalina
Excuse me I have a question regarding the tandem parasol monstrosity:
Why do you insist on my suffering?
I take it then that the twin-boom forward-fin tandem wing monstrosity has not caused suffering? This gladdens me.

Excuse me I have a question regarding the tandem parasol monstrosity:
Why do you insist on my suffering?

Originally I think some people were going full Caproni with 3 or 4 tandem wings and nacelles and an array of independent radiators, so this is probably better?

I haven't yet settled on which branch of my designs I'll offer but it won't be tandem.

  • Performance: 210kph at sea level, 15 Fuel Uses, 120kph stall with flaps, Flight Stress 1
    • With one Lightening optimization: Can remove flaps to reduce cost to 28, Ideal Control Range = 14-24
    • With one Streamlining optimization, able to reach 220 kph at sea level
  • Pro: About as fast as our engines allow. Needs no optimization to meet all goals within budget, lightening optimization allows 18% cost reduction.
  • Con: Sits at the high end of the budget range, somewhat slim margin on max strain.
Appearance/layout details for @4WheelSword to be edited in shortly:
Body divided into 3 structural elements:
  • Central main fuselage, all wood construction, with crew stations and passenger cabin. Large central panel radiator beneath main fuselage.
  • 2 Side booms, with tractor engines at front, fuel storage, and cargo holds, connected to main body primarily through lower (mid) wing.
  • Fixed gear extends from beneath engines and rear of central fuselage.
Wings: extreme staggered biplane, with upper forward parasol wing slightly longer chord than lower rear (mid) wing. Wings connected to body elements by system of wooden struts, trusses, and wires.

Large, (mostly) conventional tail at rear of main fuselage. All-moving tailplane extends between booms and main fuselage, all-moving vertical tail above tailplane on rear of main fuselage.

Be thankful I didn't wind up with my alternate canard/anhedral design.

Additional note:
Tables in forum posts are the worst.

Edited to correct Strain calculations. Slight decrease in performance to 210 kph out of the box, but can still cut costs substantially if we can successfully apply a lightening optimization.

I know, right? But I don't think the Daimyo can fly by RAW, since "Max Strain" is (+Strain plus - Strain minus MP), which puts you at seven Max Strain rather than 26.

Edit: And I don't see where you allotted 15 mass rather than ten for cargo, but that might just be because forum tables are the worst.

Nein, it's just Strain.

In its crudest abstraction, Structure is How Tough The Frame Is and Strain is How Stronk The Wings Are. Heavy plane put more strain on wing need stronger wing 2 stay on. Structure caps Strain because at a certain point reinforcing the wings no longer helps if the frame just collapses instead.

Look, we get it, you like planes and could take or leave people.

Big mood, Matsura. The biggest of moods.

That being said, it's nice that they're making time for more socialization and stuff. Here's hoping that things don't get too wild at the wedding (that I have to keep reminding myself is a wedding not a bachelorette party).

Also, I really hope that the update is not foreshadowing some kind of internal review for Yachi. I mean, the discrepancies in the records were probably just caused by a bunch of sleep-deprived and traumatized pilots making some paperwork errors. Still, I'm worried.

And that's why a flying wing is the best. Can't have the frame collapse before the wing if the frame is the wing! *taps forehead*

Joeseon Express, Revision 1
You haven't paid the 1 cost each for windscreen cockpits.
You're paying cost 1 on the radiator for I don't know what.
Since there's no gearing any more, you can drop the radiator from Drag 12(Low) to Drag 11(Low) and still have capped engine Reliability.
You should only be getting -11 Mass from paper covering with 44 total wing area, not -12.
Shoulder wing decks each give +2 Pitch Stability, not Lateral Stability. This has drastic effects on your overall Stability.
Per-wing-deck drag from (Area 22 - Span 15, min 1) should be 7 each, not 9.
Total wing area drag should be 22, -10 tandem inline = 12, not 14.
You have 10 Mass of cargo in 1 section; it requires 2.

All your math checks out.
You could add 1 more radiator drag and get to engine Reliability +4 (from +3) without hitting any breakpoints, either currently or single-optimized.
Two wheels forward and one rear is taildragger landing gear, not tricycle. Tricycle is one forward, two rear.

Also, if somebody could proofread mine and make sure I didn't screw anything up, I'd appreciate it.

Edit: Also, meeting the preferred stall speed on the Donkey without optimization basically just requires eliminating the eleventh passenger, the crew luggage allowance, and the 2 extra Fuel Uses. Should I post it as Donkey-Lite, or not bother...? It's effectively completely, 100% interchangeable with the Daimyo in every performance metric despite having a decidedly different layout, although it is 5円 cheaper and has 1-2 more engine Reliability...I guess that's enough of a difference to matter and I probably ought to post it. *groans* off to do battle with the forum tables again.

Edit edit: Donkey-Lite is up.

I think that's going to be an issue for the votes on these plans, we're asking people to choose between generally marginal differences in performance. You get more variation if you consider the maybes from optimization rolls, but people will feel cheated if they pick something that turns out suboptimal in anticipation of a botched roll. Like Daimyo beats Donkey if optimized, otherwise Donkey wins. Ultimately a lot of the vote may turn out to be aesthetic in nature.

I will reserve judgment on Joseon Express until a final numbers pass, but performance wise the lower stall speed is kinda neat.

This is definitely true- we're running hard up against the limits of what's physically possible at our current tech level, and more than enough budget to get everything that is possible, so regardless of layout variance we're ending up at very, very similar performance. With more tech available and a stricter (for the tech level) budget forcing us to pick and choose what to emphasize, I suspect we'd see a lot more variation in final results. The navy carrier fighter plane competition in a decade or two, for example (haha the navy is never going to forgive us what am I saying).
Ultimately a lot of the vote may turn out to be aesthetic in nature.
I admit to being deeply disappointed that tandem triplanes are no longer workable post-rules-revision; the trimotor layout with all three engines on the rearmost wing, completely behind the fuselage, was a thing of beauty.

It is! Would have nice takeoff/landing characteristics. Dem paper wings doe...

No! Banned! Absolutely Not!

Also, I'm hoping to start the first drawings tomorrow, same style as the Rhino. I'll do a brief draft of each to get the concept then do details as time goes on.
