Engineers

Kibe Koume, 26, Office Manager
Tiny & angry, Kibe went to school in Albia, picking up the language, the religion, and a fuckload of swear words. Speaks Albian.
Mechanical +2, Ballistics +1
Office Manager: If Kibe is not assigned to a team, the Office Stress is reduced by 1.

Sakane Jun, 26, Second Team Leader
A soured patriot, Sakane is married and has a young child being raised gender-neutrally. His two brothers who fought in the war.
Structural +2, Aerodynamics +1
Team Leader: If there are any additional projects, Sakane will lead them.
Joinery: Sakane has training in the traditional Akitsukuni carpentry art of joinery, creating complex self-supporting joints with no fasteners or glue. When working with non-monocoque wooden spars or ribs, +1 Structural.

Tezuka Kenji, ???
A stoner with occasional flashes of insight. Nobody really knows what he does, but he's probably useful?
Aerodynamics +2, Chemical +1
Flashes of Brilliance: Each natural 10 rolled by any team Tezuka is assigned to gives +1 forward to the next research roll.

Hasegawa Morio, 26
A hopeless nerd with a photography habit, mostly on account of developing his own film, Hasegawa seems to do nothing but work and stack card houses, but somehow has an incredible attractive boyfriend. Speaks Gallian.
Chemical +2, Ballistic +1
Silent Workhorse: Hasegawa can work on two different projects at once for no cost to Office Stress, providing they use different stats.

Kawamura Yosai, 25.
Serially successful womanizer and incredibly attractive, Kawamura doesn't seem to have much of a personality outside of seducing women. Well, except for that time he seduced Asuka, which nobody talks about. Speaks Dyske.
Structural +2, Electrical +1, Social +1
Easily Distracted: If Kawamura is working on the same team as a female or non-binary employee, the team is at -1d10.

Koide Hatsu, 24.
One of the few female graduates of an Akitsukuni engineering school, Koide is brilliant and incredibly driven, but her first job at Akibara was both humiliating and exposed her to an abusive coworker. Her father is a rich businessman with factories in Joseon, and she's engaged to Ken from Castles of Steel. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +2, Structural +1
No Sleep: If you let her, Koide will work herself to death. She can work a second project for no Office Stress, but all her stats will be reduced to 1 for the routine.

Kobayashi Ayao, ???
Disowned heiress of the Kobayashi family, all Kobayashi wanted was a career and to be a modern woman. For her trouble, a cousin threw acid on her, scarring her face, neck, much of her torso, and her left arm. Despite appearing serene and above it all, she's actually an avowed communist activist and baseball player.
Aerodynamics +2, Social +2

Adachi Ren, 24
Adachi learned chemistry from her father, one of the most famous chemical engineers in the country, rather than through formal schooling. She's married, has a kid, and takes spirituality very seriously. Yes, you did the math right, she had Yuki when she was 17. It's 1912, folks.
Chemical +2, Electrical +1
Young Mother: Adachi will cause double Office Stress if she has to work multiple tasks.

Uyeno Sei, Ballistics Engineer, 31.
The oldest member of the crew, this is Uyeno's second career. Her first was as an officer in the Imperial Navy with specialized technical training: her very promising career was cut short by her transition. Her work in a naval arsenal on machine-guns landed her the job here. Briefly dated Satomi (the age range is a bit creepy but again, 1912), she's missing a piece of her ear and is deaf on that side, from an exploding cannon. Recently returned from Varnmark from experimental surgery, she's known for her skill navigating gendered bureaucracy.
Ballistic +3

Mi Kyung-Jae, 23
A recent graduate of the Imperial College of Heijo, Mi is from the recently annexed territory of Joseon. For those keeping track at home, that means he's a Korean national living in Imperial Japan in 1912. We haven't seen much of his personality because he's rightfully terrified of everything around him. He has a specialty in endurance engine design and modification. Speaks Joseon.
Mechanical +1, Chemical +1
Endurance Engines: Mi has an excellent understanding of metallurgy and tolerances. Any engine he works on gains +1 Reliability if a 16+ is rolled.
Pulsejet Wizard: Mi is now one of the world's leading experts on the pulsejet engine. He can be given his own project to custom-craft pulsejet engines, and he gives +1 to any pulsejet-related project.
Joseon National: Mi does not have security clearance to work on any top-secret projects.

Miyoshi Shigeri, 23.
A non-binary person and admirer of Asuka's work, they were in an support role in the Army before joining the company.
Structural +1, Mechanical +1, Aerodynamic +1
Mechanic: Miyoshi has some experience repairing and refurbishing aircraft. They get +1 if assigned on the clean-up phase.

Other Employees
- Ohara Satomi, 22, Mr. Ohara's niece and the company test pilot, Ohara is a general lesbian disaster. She's good at flying planes, driving cars, and kissing girls. She's bad at being patient, being respectable, and sticking to literally anyones conceptions of gender roles. Deeply in lesbians with Coralie D'Amboise.
- Fujkikawa Sotatsu, old, modelmaker. He's an old man and toymaker and we don't see much of him because he locks himself in his workshop a lot. He's friends with Kawamura?

Assets
- Engine Test Rig (Allows engine tweaking and optimization.
- Wind Tunnel (+1 Aerodynamics)
- Rapid Prototype Lab (+1 Clean Up)

- Captain Amari Shiro: A Dragonfly pilot who ended up flying as Yachi's partner. Kind of delightfully twinky. They sorta slept together at one point, which wasn't great. He lost his previous boyfriend in the April Offensive and turned his plane into a shrine. He was shot in the gut and is still recovering.
- Major Izuhara: Logistics officer, Imperial Army, this bespectled officer stood up to the Caspian Crown Prince and accidentally kicked off the Akitsikuni-Caspian War. The guilt was so much that, after almost a year of running Army procurement, he shot himself in a phone both.

It is in the document, just not obviously. The technical details of a twin tail are as follows:
Every additional stabilizer adds +2 drag.
For every pair of Stabilizers and Engines, you get a +3 Control Bonus. If you have an extra stabilizer that isn't paired with an engine, you just get +1 Control.

So we would take +2 drag, but get a +6 Control bonus if we align the tails with the engines.
Ah, thanks.

But yeah, we really don't need much control for this plane, since we're racing in an almost straight line. It'd be huge for a dogfighter or an acrobatic stuntplane, but not for a racer like this. The T-wing is probably about as good as just spending that stress on optimization, but leaves us with a tech advantage that we can potentially use for future planes. The Deep Stall penalty shouldn't matter for non-acrobatic/dogfighting planes as well, since it only affects stalls that happen while over the stall speed.

But remember: We need to do Reliability optimization later.

Anyhow, here's a spreadsheet of the Dromedary if anyone wants to look at the full design. Stats:

Sketch has explicitly forbidden us plane nerds to present builds to the thread for this plane during the building process, as Sakane is merely an apprentice plane wizard.

But yes, if we have the budget for it, metal wings and evaporative radiators.

Oops. Link redacted.

Through the evaporative radiator really doesn't do a lot for my design. Difference between 30 and 31 max speed because of the steel wings adding mass.
Maybe some sort of autopilot or navigation aid would be a better investment here.

[X] "Let's try to keep drag to a minimum. Satomi can handle a stall speed around 150kph, right?"

[X] A shoulder wing.

[X] Reverse staggered wings, to offset stability in other areas.

[X] A conventionally designed airframe.

[X] Something you've been playing with since the Demon. Two vertical stabilizers and rudders means more drag, but you can take advantage of prop wash! (+1 Stress. You'll invent the modern twin tail!)

Well, in that case!

[X] "As long as it won't stall over 100 kilometers an hour, we should be fine."

Moderate option here, I think. It should give us some room to play with on other elements.

[X] Plan wingwalker
-[X] A shoulder wing.
-[x] A wing at the bottom of the airframe.

i like the idea of reinforcing a stretch of the bottom wing so someone could walk out to the engine while in flight. If we can design this thing to be air worthy on one engine, then the other could be serviced without landing. Putting the other at the shoulder allows wing/frame connections top and bottom for minimal internal bracing.

Wing Configurations
[X] Staggered wings with the upper deck forward, for stability and increased lift.

Classic. Could be argued otherwise.

[X] An unusually short airframe to save weight.

This... Which should synergize with this:

[X] Something you've been playing with since the Demon. Two vertical stabilizers and rudders means more drag, but you can take advantage of prop wash! (+1 Stress. You'll invent the modern twin tail!)

For some extra stability to offset the weight savings. Let's take advantage of those extra horses we shelled out for.

[X] Plan Tol Wing
- [X] A high parasol deck.
- [X] A shoulder wing.
[X] Heavily staggered wings, akin to the Duck, maximizing stability and lift at the cost of structural integrity.
[X] An unusually short airframe to save weight.
[X] You have this wild idea of mounting the tailplane high on the stabilizer and using it to suppliment lift... (+3 Stress. You'll invent the T-tail!)

Evaporative radiators feel like a stretch given the materials, construction techniques and wing cross sectiosn typical of the era, so I see no need to budget stress for it.

[X] "As long as it won't stall over 100 kilometers an hour, we should be fine."

[X] Plan Close Couple
- [X] A shoulder wing.
- [X] A wing in the center of the airframe.

[X] An unusually short airframe to save weight.

I have no idea what sort of wing configuration would be good for this, But I know I like the middle road on stall speed, light weight, and the T-tail.

adding it all together, this one wins p sure.

update coming.

SakaneQuest 2-7: Stay Cool
You now had a rough idea how the aircraft would come together, a high-level direction. You, Koide, and Kawamura spent some time trying to work out how the engine would be mounted, digging up sketches on how the two naval planes did it and trying to figure out how to refine it.

"I really wish this could be self-supporting somehow..." you muttered, looking over the list of wires by tensile strength. "We could just use the upper wing here as a shelf of some kind..."

"Yeah, but the stupid wing would weigh more than the rest of the plane put together." Kawamura said. You'd had this conversation a dozen times. "Do you think we can mount the engine on its side, Koide? It'd really reduce the forward profile..."

"Nah, the oil pan isn't set up for it, sorry." Koide muttered, passing you one of the pictures of the engine with the useful mounting points circled in red. "It's going to be pretty awkward no matter what we do. Another downside: we're going to need a larger-than-average radiator setup in the heat, I think. It's going to be forty degrees in the day!"

You wilted just thinking about it.

"How are we going to set up the radiators for that?" Kawamura asked.

Number
[ ] One shared radiator for both engines. That'll save some mass.
[ ] One radiator per engine. Simple, and has redundancy.
Type
[ ] A box radiator to reduce weight.
[ ] A flat panel to reduce drag.
Mount
[ ] Mounting a radiator down low will increase reliability using gravity.
[ ] Mounting it in line will be the most simple.
[ ] Mounting it up high will prevent any leaks from instantly draining the system.

"I'm not just worried about the engine at this point, I'm worried about the crew. They're going to be so hot."

"D'Ambouise is already pretty hot..." Kawamura muttered, and Koide snorted with laughter a moment.

"She's not going to sleep with you, Kawamura. Keep dreaming."

"I have a chance!" he insisted. "I think? She's bi, right?"

"I guess kinda. Satomi says she is." Koide said. "But she's got some hangup or something. Westerners, who knows."

The conventional wisdom, what you'd believed until recently, was that Westerners were just all straight, which is why they were all weird about things over here. Turns out they were even weirder than that.

"What do you mean, hangup?" you asked. Koide just shrugged.

"I dunno. She thinks she needs to be all gay now that she's married or something. I guess it's a jealously thing."

She said jealously with all the judgement the word deserved, and you winced. Makes sense, that's the sort of selfish, antisocial thing you'd expect from a Europan. Sure, you sometimes felt a bit bitter when Hainako was off with her wife some nights, but that was normal. You'd never act on it.

"Wild idea, let's get back on task." you interjected, "How are we going to keep the two of them from dying of the heat?"

You spent the next hour coming up with ideas, writing them all down. You couldn't use them all, so you eventually narrowed it down to...

Choose any number. They'll come up in the narrative later.
[ ] Reserve 1 mass for a water tank up front, with a tap to refill canteens.
[ ] You've heard of this powder that Albian troops in the desert add to their canteens that help keep them hydrated. Maybe you can find it? (+1 Stress)
[ ] Ducting in the nose will allow airflow over the pilots' bodies even behind a windscreen, at the cost of some drag.
[ ] A light air conditioning system will require electrical power and about fifty kilograms, but can cool the air coming through the ducts.
[ ] If we seal the cockpit other than the duct, cooling will be easier.
[ ] Hasagawa knows how to make solid carbon dioxide, which would be a lightweight alternative cooling system for just one mass. But then you have to convince the nerd to come: he really doesn't want to. (+1 Stress)
[ ] We can install a fan and filters in the ducking system using a bit of power to increase its effectiveness.
[ ] The wing can be extended to ensure that the pilots are always in shade, no matter the time of day, at the cost of some drag.
[ ] With some spare water, an evaporation panel can be placed up front ahead of the pilots for a cool mist, but there won't be any windshield.
[ ] Write In New Ideas!

[JK] Advise them to dress for the heat, but otherwise get back to working on good ol' ivory tower engineering with no concern for such petty things as the squishy pilots.

Solved! :p

Write in: Comfier but slightly heavier seats. Also maybe some cloth padding in the cockpit to muffle engine noise a bit. And a couple dry towels for dealing with sweat

We have air conditioning? Can we put it in the next airliner?
Also, just wondering, did we get any orders for the airliner? I can't remember.

Chilled vestments. The average human produces about 100W at rest, and the pilots will be below average. 1kg of ice each with the melt recycled through their suits and thermos should provide a comfortable margin for absorbing 10% of that for 12 hours, and that's assuming that it can't be renewed at reststops.

TBH, will the desert even be that hot?

There's a pretty big difference between the surface on the ground with fairly stagnant air, and the temperature in the air when you're going 200 km/h.

[X] Mounting a radiator down low will increase reliability using gravity.

Mounting low gives reliability with no downsides for noncombat craft, so that's an easy choice. Box is +2 drag for -1 mass which doesn't seem worth it (each 5 mass is 1 drag). As long as our mass is low enough to lift the plane we care about it only as it affects drag.

Having a shared radiator saves 3 mass and I think has no penalties unless we get shot at, so we might as well save it.

[X] Reserve 1 mass for a water tank up front, with a tap to refill canteens.

Not sure on the cooling front, but a tank of water seems like the cheapest option that won't significantly reduce performance (increase drag) so I'm going with that for now.

I think water alone wont be sufficient. Need at least shade+water, and even that will be a bit miserable.
