Her father is a rich businessman with factories in Joseon, and she's engaged to Ken from Castles of Steel. Speaks Joseon.

For her trouble, a cousin threw acid on her, scarring her face, neck, much of her torso, and her left arm. Despite appearing serene and above it all, she's actually an avowed communist activist and baseball player.

Uyeno Sei, Ballistics Engineer, 31.
The oldest member of the crew, this is Uyeno's second career. Her first was as an officer in the Imperial Navy with specialized technical training: her very promising career was cut short by her transition. Her work in a naval arsenal on machine-guns landed her the job here. Briefly dated Satomi (the age range is a bit creepy but again, 1912), she's missing a piece of her ear and is deaf on that side, from an exploding cannon. Recently returned from Varnmark from experimental surgery, she's known for her skill navigating gendered bureaucracy.

A recent graduate of the Imperial College of Heijo, Mi is from the recently annexed territory of Joseon. For those keeping track at home, that means he's a Korean national living in Imperial Japan in 1912. We haven't seen much of his personality because he's rightfully terrified of everything around him. He has a specialty in endurance engine design and modification. Speaks Joseon.

Endurance Engines: Mi has an excellent understanding of metallurgy and tolerances. Any engine he works on gains +1 Reliability if a 16+ is rolled.
Pulsejet Wizard: Mi is now one of the world's leading experts on the pulsejet engine. He can be given his own project to custom-craft pulsejet engines, and he gives +1 to any pulsejet-related project.
Joseon National: Mi does not have security clearance to work on any top-secret projects.

Miyoshi Shigeri, 23.
A non-binary person and admirer of Asuka's work, they were in an support role in the Army before joining the company.

- Lt. Coralie D'Amboise: Gallian pilot in exile. Satomi's girlfriend. 25. Accomplished bisexual duelist. She flew in the war for a single day, and for her troubles got a hole blown in her cheek and had her left arm paralyzed.

Akisukuni Army & Ex-Army
- Lt. Torio Tanaka: Yachi's former observer as an enlisted man. Was jumped up to fly Ducks and lost a leg on his first mission. A trained painter, married to Torio Saya.
- Captain Amari Shiro: A Dragonfly pilot who ended up flying as Yachi's partner. Kind of delightfully twinky. They sorta slept together at one point, which wasn't great. He lost his previous boyfriend in the April Offensive and turned his plane into a shrine. He was shot in the gut and is still recovering.
- Major Izuhara: Logistics officer, Imperial Army, this bespectled officer stood up to the Caspian Crown Prince and accidentally kicked off the Akitsikuni-Caspian War. The guilt was so much that, after almost a year of running Army procurement, he shot himself in a phone both.
- Captain Nakai Sekien: Army scout pilot. First person to drop a bomb from an airplane, later head of the Duck Squadrons.
- Captain Teshima: A Desk pilot that fought with Yachi. Lost an arm in the process, took over for Major Izuhara after his death. Seems cheery despite it all.
- Captain Nashio: A real piece of shit dude and probably a rapist, he's also a war hero as the second-highest scoring ace on the Akitsukuni side. He was a young shitty kid in way over his head but it's no excuse.
- Lt. Kinjo: Kind of a dumb lump and Nashio's friend, one of the desk pilots. Dead at 19.
- Lt. Okazaki: Yachi's friend from before the war and pilot, he died in a spin in his dragonfly. His death probably hit Yachi the hardest.

Westerners
- Rose & Antoinette Sears: Pioneers of flight. Sisters. Black in 1910s not!America. Yikes.
- Timina Guasti: Famous aircraft designer from Otrusia. Likes big planes and green.
- Prince Protasov Vasilyevich: Crown Prince of Great Caspia. Real dick. You gotta hand it to him though, a decent flier.

Your short two frames and a fuselage for that spreadsheet of the duck.

In the current rules-set pusher engines don't require a frame section. That's why the designs using the 'old' version of the spreadsheet show -1 frames on all versions of the Duck, as there's only tractor (which does require a frame section) but not pusher.

Just caught up with the thread, and I'm really liking it so far, even if I haven't a clue as far as the design process is concerned. I'm not even sure if I should be voting on actual aircraft designs at the moment, but hopefully I'll become more confident and well-informed about things in future.

Okay yeah we're doing this but... I can't actually find what this plan is anywhere. Somebody please tell me so I can boop it into the sheet and keep going.
 
Hmm, might have mis-read the lift table, may need to increase the flaps to 6A to be able to fly at 10 km/h at angels 10+. Thankfully, increasing flap area is free, and the wing is big enough to take the increase.

The dive profile looks like:
Burn off half your fuel, so your mass penalty goes down by 1 and your DNE goes up by one, to 42
Start at altitude 7+release height.
Deploy flaps
reduce speed to 10 km/h (which is your stall speed with flaps deployed)
hope physics isn't watching too closely
dive 7, gaining 21 speed (so you are now going 22) (you close your flaps somewhere in here)
release bombs (with +7 - release altitude modifier)
make an immediate recovery (2G maneuver, 22+20 = 42 OK!)
If your bomb release altitude was below altitude 5 (presumed safe from ground fire), you can use your next action to trade up to 20 speed to gain altitude (@ 5 speed -> 1 altitude)
If you climb for 3 or 4 altitude, you'll have to deploy your flaps again during that climb, as you'll end up at speed 7 (climb 3) or speed 2 (climb 4), and you'll need the flaps not to stall.

If you get attacked, you can always dump your bombs, dive down a lot of altitude, and go a lot faster than anything not a dive bomber can chase you. Use that speed to flee the area.

Now that I think of it, keeping one of these around to do aerodynamic testing on shapes for very high (for the time) speed flight might be handy. This thing can go up to ~400 km/h in a dive, which is possibly the fastest a human has ever gone before. Attaching a model of the shape to one of these and seeing how it preforms could be useful, as I doubt our wind tunnel manages more that 160 km/h, or so.

You spent most of the next morning, not working on the aircraft, but in a meeting with Mr. Ohara and some investors in the company, all overseen by members of the Special Higher Police, who had apparently decided that plane design was a military secret and were ruthlessly vetting everyone in the meeting and everything that happened there. You mostly sat quietly in the corner, nodding politely when you name was invoked as the "designer of the world's fastest airplane" and "the prodigy designer" and all that.

There were about a dozen people around the low table, all of them old, rich men. At the end of the table Mr. Ohara had a stand set up, featuring a hasty illustration of the new aircraft swooping to attack a Caspian train. You'd protested the commissioning of the illustration, as details about control surfaces and landing gear were not yet locked down, but Mr. Ohara had insisted. The reveal of the picture had drawn applause and now all the old men were talking about figures of money that, even though you were in the upper 1% income bracket of your nation, you couldn't even comprehend. This was a different world, and one you were ill-prepared for.



Eventually the meeting ended, everyone bowed to everyone, and the secret police disappeared, presumably to trail the investors home and make sure they didn't talk to anyone suspicious, and you were finally released back to the office, carrying the painting out with you at Mr. Ohara's insistence and propping it up in the design office.

"Really? Did that artist even look at the blueprints?" Kibe said, which elected a laugh from everyone. "I tell you, she was blind. She has to be."

"I don't think she's blind. She's just terrible." Kawamura offered. "Completely unskilled."

"And we haven't even finished the control surfaces. Did she just make them up?" Hasagawa added.

The painting quickly went in the trash and you all got back to work. Maybe if you defined the control surfaces better, the next painting would be more accurate?

While you do this I'm going to make some modifications to the wing strut system. Basically they are going to have diminishing returns but be very useful up front, so it's a very good idea to have one but more than that starts getting less and less effective.

Hey, it's not that bad... Certainly not for giving us a quick look at the fuel tank arrangement and just how duck-like it may look from the ground. And for all that the team complains, that does look like the most likely control surface scheme.
 
What are the options? My engineering mind says that mechanical elevons would be the best, due to simplicity. But I guess we are after a cost and weight efficient solution, so maybe separate control surfaces for each direction. Like elevators on the fore wing, with alerons on the main wing.

Well, that is the idea intended by canards. We could go for elevons in the wing, plus elevators in the canards, if we want to be able to pull up really goddamn hard, but if designed well it should still be able to pull up even without needing the elevons, and just using the elevators. That being said, I don't entirely feel comfortable with that option, as my understanding of the rules and the descriptions of what we might have expected from the Navy seaplane during that project's design phase, I have concerns that high stability/low control designs, especially ones with negative control, might actually have problems pitching up hard enough to pull out of the dive.
 
I have to admit that I'm rather confused why the voters chose the Imperial Japan expy. A place with no resources, a poor grasp of logistics, and low industrial capacity.
