So what kind of government was in charge of human space before the ships stop coming? Was earth the government center or were we part of some other space government?

Well, from what i gathered, DAoT humanity was a kind of loose confederation, with Terra and Mars as twin capital worlds.

Of course, the master of this quest is Academia Nut, not me.

@Academia Nut

I've got questions about the research options you've listed, but especially this one -

UAM Jailbreaking 0/500 (Warning: Researching less than 50 RP a turn on this project breaks a UAM device)

Does that mean that if we leave it alone that the UAM devices will start breaking down on their own? Or is that only if we attempt research and score less than 50 RP on a research attempt? How are RPs per turn calculated?

Local Building Materials 0/200
Tree Smelter Design 0/100

Dandriss Grade Lumbermill Saw Design 0/400

I'm assuming these are the technologies we need to start making our own buildings - the saw design to help cut down the metallic trees , the smelter to extract metals from them, and Local Building Materials to know how to work them and use them in construction. Am I right?

Improved Local Sap Purification 0/350
Grenade Fruit Cultivars 0/250

The sap purification is pretty obvious, namely reducing or possibly even eliminating the heavy metal poisoning from eating the tree sap. But are the grenade fruits useful as anything aside from weapons? Could they be edible, or useful in some non-lethal way?

Industrial Fusion Reactor Design 0/300
Backup Fusion Reactor Design 0/200

Can we research these after we assemble and start operating the reactors we already have? Or do we lose the opportunity once we use the reactors to create power rather than as study material for the above topics?

The issue with releasing generally with a warning is that the poor slaves will be the ones to get fucked over in the future in the case of the Dragonflies.

More so than releasing without a warning that is.

Awake now, so time to answer some questions.

@Academia Nut

If we build the Indusrial Fusion Reactor now does that mean that the reasearch action with it is locked forever or till we shut it down for the eggheads to go have a look?

I also want to know if constructing it now will also cause problems in the nature that if it breaks down we can't fix it up again cause we didn't take the time to write down the schematics we have the design blueprint needed to input into the fabricator to build replacement for worn down and broken pieces of the fusion reactor?

If indeed the case is like this installing it now could be a major blunder on our part.

Yes, in order to research its design you will have to have it in a deactivated state so if you set it up you would have to take it down first in order to be able to build a new one. There is however an alternate path: if you research the back up generator you will unlock the project Plasma Physics I which will help you understand the underlying physics better and help with keeping your technology from slipping away.

Well, from what i gathered, DAoT humanity was a kind of loose confederation, with Terra and Mars as twin capital worlds.

More or less. This planet was basically being colonized by the equivalent of a sub-sector corporation.

Yes. Yes, eventually the gear that you don't have the designs for will start breaking down. You can reverse engineer broken equipment but it is harder than intact equipment. The danger with the UAM Jailbreaking attempt is that the devices were hardwired with to not accept certain input designs, most notably being weapon designs above a certain level of advancement/lethality and the UAM design itself so that you can't just make more of them and get around the restrictions. So you need to be making a certain amount of progress each turn, which represents not screwing up.

Local building materials is how you build (semi-) armoured buildings that can survive the environment using local materials rather than shipping them in from off world. The other two are figuring out the designs of sawmill machines so that when they break down you know how to repair them. They will also lead to Industrial Device Production I which will let you build parts for some industrial machines from scratch. For some parts you can "manually" make replacement parts, but for others you simply don't have the part design. It's like knowing that a design needs a L7-54 class widget and where that goes in relation to everything else and knowing how to take a bunch of rocks and metals to make an L7-54 class widget.

For now you would be making grenades. The experience gained from the genetic manipulation would valuable for pursuing other, related projects though.

Backup Fusion Reactor Design 0/200

As mentioned above, you can't research them once set up unless you deactivate them first, which may cause issues with power production.

Hm... so, taking all that into account, it seems like the best course of action would be to set up the big fusion reactor, while keeping the backup reactor for reverse-engineering.

We should also look into developing the means to create more UAMs ASAP. We can learn how to Jailbreak them quickly and fairly safely, but *only* if we use the facilities for Research rather than Training; our Provost's Learning is 19, which multiplied by 3 translates to 57; enough to prevent the screw-up if we go below 50pts (@Academia Nut: Unless the 50+ points requirements is for the diceroll(s)?)

On the other hand, studying UAM Design would be even safer, but take longer, particularly since we might have to figure out how to built UAM-parts afterwards.

@Academia Nuts: Will we be able to set up additional facilities like the one we currently have? The one capable of switching between Research and Teaching?
And if so; how difficult would this be?

You said the backup fusion reactor was about the size of a car or something. From what I understand it can power one maybe two buildings?

I will start including the power and space requirements before the next update. The back up provides less power than your solar array but it is quite potent, and depending on what you want to power it could power several buildings. The hospital was quite power hungry with its technology.

Correct, keeping the research facility active would essentially give you enough people paying attention to the problem to avoid a motherboard burnout.

Once you have Local Building Materials you can start construction of buildings you already have, like more farms, more dorms, more research centres, etc. For the research centres you would have to train up enough academics to staff them, and you would also need to acquire more labourers as well, which would probably require more food, which...

You can see where this is going. There's been an apocalypse. You're trying to keep a lot of plates spinning.

Good to know.

One last question: Is fuel for said reactors going to be an issue or can we just feed them water or something?

Um... they're fusion reactors. That shouldn't be an issue unless they run on weird stuff like he3. IIRC the neutron catchers are made from water which becomes heavy water which is used to fuel the fusion reaction. But then that's what I recall from browsing wikipedia

Good to know.

These are Dark Age reactors. Anything reasonably rich in hydrogen works just fine, although for longevity you probably don't want to dump in anything more complex than alkanes, and if you are throwing in hydrocarbons you may have to cycle down the reactor to scrape diamond off the walls of the fusion chamber. Water is fine though, the system can deal with oxygen plasma just fine.

Give our allies a better food position, NOT our enemies, who'd just eat all the good stuff and force their slaves to take it exclusively.

Yeah. We basically have to balance between preserving what knowledge we have, and assigning the necessary resources to actually keep ourselves going and continue to preserve said knowledge.
For example, Local Building Materials doesn't help us keep the tech for Fusion Reactors or Industrial Machinery alive, but it's necessary to expand our farms, living space, and so on, so we can build more schools and research facilities where we can keep reverse-engineering existing technologies.

In that regard, do we have any estimates about how long we can reasonably expect the various pieces of equipment that we currently have to last? Ie, the UAMs, the Fusion Reactors (both large and backupt), the medical equipment, the industrial equipment, and so on?
