Chapter 98 - Is This A Lesson Learned?
"So, what topic sounds interesting?" you ask Kyoko. She looks up at you, a bit confused.
"Wait, you were serious about all that? I kinda thought…" her voice trails off and she looks out the window towards the city, away from you.
"Thought what?" you say. She jumps, surprised despite the fact you were just talking. She must have been drawn to a different train of thought.
"It's nothing." Kyoko assures quickly. You are not particularly reassured.
"Well, whatever the case, I was being totally honest. If there's something you'd like to learn, I'll do my best to teach you."
Kyoko still looks doubtful. "I'm not gonna be any good as a student, you know? Don't you have something better to do with your time?"
"Technically I am planning to scout Kamihama City and the anomalies around it sometime today," you admit, "but that's only a 'better thing' to do by a description I don't ascribe to. Preparing for your future is important."
"My future?" Kyoko scoffs. "You're pretty optimistic. What exactly am I gonna do like this?" Her form ripples, momentarily replaced by the towering glass beast, flames licking just beneath her skin. Then the disguise reasserts itself, and the heat fades.
"It's not exactly stopping you now." you point out. "You're still fully capable of doing anything anyone else could. As long as Angela refreshes the disguise every one in a while, you'll be able to live as a person normally would."
"Yeah, that definitely won't go wrong. Can't see any possible problems with a person who sets everything around them on fire just walking around." the red-haired girl snarks. While you're tempted to correct her that her powers don't actually set things on fire, but instead apply the concept of "burning" to them, it probably wouldn't be very helpful. Fortunately, you have a better argument.
"What about patrol last night? How'd things go?"
"I… I guess it was okay. I missed fighting with Mami, and her new student seems alright. Not exactly the best with tactics, but she's pretty passionate." Kyoko chuckles a bit, as if remembering something in particular. You're going to have to grill Mami about it later. For now, you can just deliver your point.
"And did anything bad happen? If there were any big disasters like what you're worried about, I would hope that I would've heard about it already."
Kyoko sighs. "Yeah, but that was just one night. It always goes well at first. You can't take that as proof that nothing's ever gonna go wrong."
"No," you admit, "but it's a good start. If you never take any risks in life, you're not gonna get anywhere. Besides, Mami and Sayaka know what they're doing." A short pause. "Well, Mami knows what she's doing and Sayaka's learning. They can take care of themselves."
"Fine, I'll pick something." Kyoko relents, mostly to escape what is becoming a rather personal conversation. Pressing further might undo what progress you've made so far, so you let it go. Besides, this is what you wanted originally. "Robotics sounds cool, I guess?"

After a quick trip to an electronics store and a pointed lack of appreciation for Kyubey in spite of the generous budget they've given you along with your fake identity, and you're ready to start. Aside from Kyoko freezing when the clerk mentions how nice it is to see parents getting involved with their children's interests, nothing of note happens. You're a bit disappointed by the selection of parts, but given the technological gap between the City and this world it's understandable.
Back at the apartment, you dump the box of parts out onto the table.
"So, the first step to design is knowing what you're working with. Robotics involves a lot of moving parts, figuratively and literally, and they all need to work together seamlessly for a functioning product." you begin, sitting opposite to Kyoko before the pile of machinery.
"So what can we make with this?" Kyoko asks.
"With this? Nothing." you say, cackling internally at the look on Kyoko's face. "We're going to be assembling some simple mechanisms that are used in more complex machinery. Then we'll be practicing some coding, which is where most of the real robotics work happens."
"Cool. Where are we starting?"
"Well, first off is a power source. For anything too intensive, we traditionally use enkephalin batteries. Those are difficult to make though, so we'll be settling for some basic fusion cells…"

As it turns out, knowing something and knowing how to teach it to somebody else is not the same thing. You're good at communicating, and Kyoko does seem genuinely invested in the subject, but most of the intricacies of how to assemble anything beyond the basics gets lost in translation. After about three hours and twice as many snack breaks, you mutually decide to move on to something less difficult.
Intruding upon the territory of what is likely a powerful Abnormality who has had weeks to establish their base of power.
The starry sparks of your teleportation fade away as you and Kyoko appear on the border of Kamihama City. Immediately, something feels off. While the conspicuous absence of people is fortunate for you, it's also worrying. Some of the houses nearby are completely dark.
"So, what's so important about this place that we're checking it out?" Kyoko asks, spear flickering into existence in her hands.
"Kyubey was keeping track of an Abnormality on the day I found you, but he lost a bunch of data after he followed it into this city. There's something very suspicious going on here, and we're going to figure out what."
With that said, you draw Lamp into your off-hand and scan the city limits. Immediately, you take a step back.
A crystalline emerald field encases the whole city. The spell circles typical of most of the City's magic-users are absent, but a lattice of cracks and scratches still stretches over the ethereal surface. Beneath the first barrier, layers and layers more are built up into a solid wall of enchantments. You can only guess what most of them do, although at least one must be responsible for Kyubey's information leak. Either something to stop people from noticing or finding the city, or just a filter that stops retaining information when leaving. The rest could be traps, alarms, or just actual barricades of some sort. Whatever the case, at least you have confirmation of who's active in Kamihama. These defenses aren't native Magic, not without the characteristic tinges of emotion. It isn't Ruins magic or an Abnormality's variant of such. That only leaves you a single suspect who you know to be here in this world. The same Abnormality who you suspect killed the team formerly occupying this city, a team who had been experimenting with Soul Gems.
None of this looks good. The question is, what do you do about it?

I see we're getting to Act 2 proper. There'll be a more established goal this time around.
Oh look, 2.2.2! Neat.
