Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

I'm concerned about the general population's reaction to the governments of the world that had at least some sort of connection to magic and kept it a secret, like England and clock tower. When, and I really doubt that can stay hidden, that gets out I see protests/riots in the streets, demands that their leaders step down, and worst case possible coup attempts and even civil wars on the one's who lied to them.

Yeah, militaries going to war is obviously bad but if civil unrest gets bad enough there'll be different armies to deal with and then that might not be so cut and dry...

I still don't know what to vote for, they all sound a tad cliche and too philosophical.

Eh, I think coups, even in worst case scenario are a little extreme. It's a pretty big lie, yes, but it's not a world ending lie (unless you count the Daemons.). Nothing a bit of political reassurance can't fix.

Really, I expect the Power-Players to make some moves soon.

Major problem here is going to be places that don't know about magic like America trying to 'catch up' by demanding people to teach some of their soldiers magic under the threat of war, Or black-ops attempting to round up some of the independent magical groups for constitutional interrogation. This will cause problems because if they get a game changer like that, they might try to expand.

Other problems include cultists, dark mages, conspiracy theorists, the Illuminati, and enthusiastic wannabe mages that might damage things while they learn, all of which need to be dealt with. And wow, Never thought I would use those words in the same sentence seriously.

Another relevant problem is that since Gaia released the Limiters, expect Magical Girls to be awakening for the final battle. In fact, WW3 might be a way for Gaia to undirectly awaken magical girls. It makes sense.

there'll be different armies to deal with and then that might not be so cut and dry...

In my opinion, I expect the battle lines to be like this;
  • Faction 1) Magical Faction/Commonwealths.
    • Britain, France, most of magical Europe, and the independent mage groups.
    • I expect these factions to try to keep order around by exerting their influence. They are the main magical power-players around here, and they all have a powerful military to boot.
    • This, due to having Britain, includes the Commonwealths.
  • Faction 2) NATO.
    • Pretty much an alliance of the European nations that aren't magically aligned. Faction 1 will most likely be allied with this faction.
    • They would probably try to corral the expansionist factions.
  • Faction 3) Warsaw Pact.
    • Eastern Warsaw Pact nations.
    • Most likely would try to use magic, if they don't know about it already, to try to settle age old greed for Europe. Expect the USSR to come back to try to compete against NATO and America.
  • Faction 4) America.
    • America, trying to catch up with Faction 1, would probably attempt to try to use their position as a superpower, or at least a candidate as one, to try to make everyone listen to them, and when they don't, declare themselves as new faction and try to take on the world to gain magical powers. Expecting them to shut down their neutrality (they probably will be) until most of the previous factions have obviously fought themselves out. After that I expect them to try to come in, clean up, and try to win the war by themselves.
    • Expect faction 4 to be a pain in the ass, as they will probably try every underhanded method to get a mage in the interrogation room, or worse, on the operating table, the simple reason being that they want mages on their team, or if not, artificial mages. Also, expect them to come after us and our MG team.
  • Faction 5) Small nation Alliance.
    • What do I mean by this? I mean that since there is a modern World War going on, I expect places like Africa, South America, and south-east Asia to form a strong alliance to try to defend themselves from being annexed by the greater powers.
    • This faction will generally try to stay alive.
  • 'Faction' 6) Religious Factions.
    • Some of these factions will either consider magic a gift of their gods or a sin. This is a problem, as they might start a religious crusade of some sorts.
    • Due to cultists being somewhat a religion, they fall under this 'faction' as well.
  • Faction 7) Under-the-Table Factions.
    • Illuminati, New World Order, CORE, You name it. These spooks are probably going to try to steal or exploit high-value value players from all factions.
    • Expecting them to be a nuisance trying to do what they usually do.
  • And last but not least, Other factions)
    • Rebels, Terrorists, pretty much everyone else.
    • Goals depend on what they are.

I still don't know what to vote for, they all sound a tad cliche and too philosophical.

Eh, I think our decision here won't make much of an impact other than making Karen and others see more of our personality. We aren't much of a commander but more Spec-Ops Soldier. If we get our official MG team though...

I'm pretty sure flattening an army would likely traumatise Cerys.

Cerys is a tough girl, and she's dealt with a lot of death lately. But most of that was her killing monsters and evil wizards, or dealing with the deaths of people she was fighting with. Everytime somebody dies in the mission, she thinks about it for a while before putting it out of her mind and moving forward. She's a trooper.

But aside from that one time she killed the burglar, she never killed a normal human before (excluding the hundreds of people she killed with her fires across the city that she likely doesn't know about...).

So imagine the kind of reaction she'd have when she's flying over an army of soldiers, knowing that almost all of them have families to go back to and are only fighting because of their military and government, and the next second she turns them all into smears of blood.

I'm not advocating against it. It could be a pretty good deterrent depending (it could inspire more panic). I'm just worried on the horrible consequences it could have on Cerys' mind.

Well, I assume the only reversal to that is if they were all trying to hurt Una for some reason.

[X] "We will. Humans never let war stop them before and they won't do it now. We're like cockroaches in how hard it is to kill us for good. And I'd know, don't you think?"

Answer to Karen aside, I was thinking about the situation. And I think Cerys have small chance of derailing the war.

It all comes to ability to form magical connections. Part of Cerys abilities, that was heavily present on the beginning and gradually fallen into obscurity. She was able to communicate with spirit of continent. She was able to communicate on deep level with Una. She can form connections.

Ability to forge magical links is potent thing. Especially, sice such connection can be developed in multiple interesting directions. Such as connecting to allies and sharing power. Or connecting to magicla girls to know when one is in danges. Hell, likely even using such connection to teleport, coming to aid in sticky situation.

And there is one more inportan elements here: communication with Light.

You cannot approach their home. You cannot send letter. You cannot shout loud enough for them to hear. But you if You can link with it, You can communicate with it.

And if Light can be reached.... well. Everythnig changes.

At very least they should be able to tech how to take care of the Barrier.

It's not a big chance, but when if can save countless of lives, and affect world itself? When situation is this desperate, and future this grim? I think it's certainly worth making some experiments and trying.

1) Is USSR and Warsaw Pact even a thing in this AU? Because according to World News, it's post-Soviet era.
2) I find it more likely some kind of neo-nazi zealot from the neighboring countries will try to make a terrorist strike via magic, fueled by their hatred of Russia. After all, it's about time when colour revolutions will be gestating.

1) What I mean is that if pushed hard enough in the war, the Russian Federation might turn back into the USSR or a proxy of it and go full-on. Former USSR nation-states would want protection, and suddenly, there's another Warsaw Pact.

2) While that could be true, that falls under the other factions tab. There will be some independent terrorist factions, and those go under other.

Well... the two lead choices are tied at three votes apiece and have been for a while now.

I can fix that

I still feel like both of those are way out of character for Cerys to say. The world? Humanity? She's never been one for big picture stuff so far, and having her whip out grandiose crap like that at the drop of a hat really isn't that realistic.

Apologies for the double post (tablet keyboard borked itself in the middle of the last post) but here's my vote.

There we go, much more like Cerys.
