+++EMERGENCY UPDATE+++

+++WARP-EXIT SIGNATURES DETECTED+++

+++7 UNIDENTIFIED NEON SHIPS HAVE DE-WARPED OUTSIDE ITANI+++

+++COURSE CALCULATED: ITANI - MAGDAB INFERRED+++

+++COMMUNICATION DETECTED+++

+++REQUESTING ORDERS+++

"Alright, they have returned," Thule-2000 growled, clenching her fists as she stared at the blob of contacts outside the system, a grimace of disgust and professional hatred tugging at her facial augments. "My girls stand ready to kill them all; just say the word, Admiral," she continued, her eyes flicking over to K-531, their quadrupedal form shrouded in the heavy white-blue robes of the Star-Mechanicum covering all but six of their arms, two locked in prayer as another held a lit thurible and the last three were busy repairing a damaged bionic limb of a waiting crewmember.

+++Your zeal is admirable, Thule-2000, yet you must remember to temper it with the coolness of logic.+++ They spoke, deft movements replacing a damaged component before continuing with a bit of cleaning. +++These ships have been recorded with abnormal emissions and irregular power-output. Why? Damage? Faulty Components? The result of a mutiny by a crew seeking freedom?+++

"Most likely another try with bombs," Sensor Specialist Magito Iki piped up, their electronic voice laced with a distinctly Corcrat drawl. "Imps have never been known to care about the crew as far as our records go, and what better way than to fuck up than by trying the same trick twice?"

+++Hrm, a likely theory, yet I believe a more sinister purpose is inherent in these ships.+++ K-531 supplied, beckoning the waiting crew over before fitting them with the repaired limb once more, mutters of prayers underlying their louder, active, voice. +++They are no less capable of learning from their mistakes and gathered information than we are, and it would be unwise to try and act upon such ideas. It is far more likely that they are Fire Ships.+++

"Fire Ships?" Thule-2000 questioned, an asking glance thrown the way of Magito, receiving shrugged shoulders in return.

+++Fire Ships are vessels filled with plasma bombs and other incendiaries, flown by suicidal crews into enemy formations and detonated. These explosions circumvent shields and can destroy Destroyers outright if caught and scour the armor of most Cruisers to the skeletal structure if not prevented.+++ Eyes stared at K-531, surprise, disbelief, and growing concern within them. +++Thus, it is likely that these ships are intended to infiltrate the system and reveal themselves near our fleet when theirs commences combat. Destruction of the local SDF alone would be dangerous to our defenses...+++

"Shiiiiit..." Thule-2000 groaned, leaning back, thinking hard. "Can we destroy them first? We have the range with our lances, don't we?"

"...or," Magitos hesitantly began. "Or we try to board them." Now, eyes turned to look at him. "Hear me out. These ships should know where their fleet will leave the Warp, as we can already guess when, thanks to their piss-poor comm-discipline, and if we board them, place them in the right location, and let 'em fly..."

+++Such a tactic would require voluntold crew, or Servitors programmed for the task. Using volunteers would carry a too-great risk of such crew trying to martyr themselves.+++ K-531 mused, looking at the blob of contacts some months out yet with interest and intrigue.

"It's a possibility. I would rather have them destroyed than risk it. But it's not like my sisters won't get to reap their pound of scrap either way; Neon won't know what hit them now that all our Task Forces are here." A malevolent grin spread across her face. "Calling it merely thrice the firepower than the SDF would be an insult."

Neon Attacks Once More
[] (Write-In your Battleplan)

AN: Clear Statements: You know roughly when Neon will attack, the rough stellar direction of where they'll appear, they have no idea what your Libra's can do, no idea what your Aries-S can do, and have no idea that you know of their possible-Fire Ship Tactic. Ambush Time.

Also: The Star-Mechanicum is your Mechanicum now subsumed under the Star Child. Rejoice!

I'm tempted to have our strike craft be waiting in the general area of where there to appear and have them target the Fire-Ships while among the Neon Fleet and cause them to explode among said Neon ships. Then have the rest of the fleet sweep in and finish what's left.

So two broad options is destroy the fire ships before the suspected Neon Protectorate attack or try to capture them to both use them against the incoming attack and to gain intelligence on a better idea of where the enemy fleet is likely to emerge at.

I'm leaning towards destroying them before the Neon fleet arrives and prepare an ambush.

intresting...ambush time mayhaps? we might have to disable the ships in a way that allows for boarding teams to liberate whoever we can grab...and maybe get enough data on the ships for potential design updates, flaws in their designs for future engagements, and of course using the very ships to blow them up...and hey if we can grab any of their Astropaths or something similar...we can figure out their communications and such.

Any boarding assault is going to have to be extremely fast and rapid because these ships will have crew picked for their fanaticism and willingness to martyr themselves for the God Emperor. They could easily self destruct and take our boarding forces with them to the grave.

Would they need to be? I don't think the vast majority of Imperial crews generally have much knowledge of or input on the ship's operation outside of the specific systems they operate. I'd expect the Imperium would be able to set their ships up so they only need the bridge crews and maybe the guys running the engines to be loyal to use them effectively as fire ships, which would drastically cut down the difficulty of a successful boarding operation.

Hmm, The chance of them sabotaging or self destructing their own ships is a very real problem, but the Quality advantage of the imperium will hopefully be lower when it comes to boarding actions.

Also, as unfortunate as it is, if they Self destruct the ship to stop our borders, That IS a ship of generally better quality, set up as a fire ship, then ours that we no longer have to deal with at the trade for essentially infantry. Trading lives to victory sucks, but between that and losing to the genocidal xenophobes, It must be considered.

This feels like a time to KISS, while trying to hold onto some cards.

I think the card to play here is our fighters/bombers.

Board the fire ships to find the location of emergence, then hold onto the ships, don't send crews to their deaths. Maybe we can refurbish them, or use them for civilian shipping.

Then have the fighters and bombers ready to pounce on the emergence point for the follow-up fleet.

@HeroCooky A couple of questions: can we eliminate the fireships well before the Neon fleet is expected to arrive? Also, can hide our fleet behind Magdab after eliminating the fireships and only show the SDF when the Neon attack force arrives, and then come around the planet to attack them once they are too deep in the system's gravity well to warp out?

In order: you can and very much so.

Right so, here's my idea:

[X] Plan: Playing it Safe and Setting the Trap
-[X] Fireships: Eliminate the fireships before the projected arrival of Neon fleet. Try to capture one or more for intel gathering, but the priority is taking them out of play for future engagement.
-[X] Ambush: Knowing the rough time estimate and the rough stellar direction the enemy will arrive at. Use this to our advantage to set an ambush. The SDF will be the visible bait and be in their defensive position near Magdab. Show the enemy the expected SDF forces when they arrive. Hide the rest of the fleet behind the planet opposite of the arrival point. Draw the enemy in until they are too far into the system gravity well to escape. Once they close into the designated ambush point the trap will be sprung and either a two-pronged attack or a combined attack (with the ambush fleet and SDF joining together) will be launched depending on the judgment of the local commander.

Neon won't know what hit them now that Task Fleet Alpha's here.
-[] Task Fleet Alpha (0/10 Ship Capacity)
(1x Andromeda-Class Command Ship)
-[] Task Fleet Beta
(7x Aries-Secundus Class Corvette, 5x Lupus-Class Torpedo Destroyer, 3x Crux-Class Missile Frigate, 1x Libra-class Light Carrier, 1x Libra-Secundus Light Carrier, 2x Taurus-Class Troopship (0/2 SAG Capacity))

K-531 & Sensor Specialist Magito Iki: *questioning look* . . . +++It's Beta+++ /. . . "It's Beta"

Thule-2000 is about to be hit with some remedial classes, oof.

intresting plan, lets see what happens in the next few hours...

but yeah i think the above plan has a good chance of working.

I like the simple elegance of this plan. Nothing fancy, just exploiting orbital mechanics, the limits of and FTL system, and the failure of enemy OPSEC

I also love the Vibe you've given the Star Mechanicum Cooky, and the Color Pallet is *chef's kiss* glorious.

If they could self destruct as easily as You say, boarding would be a much less effective tactic than it is portrayed as, with Astartes not likely using it as one of their man void strategies with how hard it is to replace them or to extract geneseed that gets blown up on a ship.

The real issue is we don't have a ship with dedicated boarding shuttles, which is what I want with our Brawler LC when we make it.

One thing to keep in mind is we're going to be at a major disadvantage in any roll off, so any plan that needs us to win an opposed roll is probably going to fail. So trying to capture those ships is unlikely to work. So just getting them in system and jumping them with overwhelming force after picking off the fireships seems like a good plan to me. If we pull it off, they won't be able to get a message out so the enemy won't know what happened other than the fleet they sent did not come back.

Question: would the arriving Neon force expect to see/communicate with the fire ships?

If they see we've already taken out those ships then they'll be more cautious. We should either try to make it look like they're still out there or like the SDF tangled with them and got damaged. Bait, in other words.

These aren't regular ships though, they are fire ships, which means they are set up to self-destruct.
