Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Is there WOJ on that somewhere, because I've read the books trying to figure out why Ethniu had hands and I've found zero explanation. As far as I can tell she's just that beefy and everyone else are all just scrubs.
Sort of? I can't find the exact ones I was looking for, but it's canon the white god is the one who changed the rules and forced anyone who wanted to keep their old power level leave earth and stay out, including proper Dragons who are explicitly peers to Titans and weaker than angels.

cite:
  • Well, last book for a dragon. We're definitely doing a dragon vs wizard fight (cheers) you're not getting out of a fantasy series there. Dragons are on the same scale as titans. If titans were the construction crew, dragons were their bulldozers. If a dragon got really upset, he could tear about the universe he existed in which would admittedly be counter intuitive unless he's really nihilistic. Uriel is constrained by the above, dragons are constrained because they need somewhere to stand.

Note that "the above" in that context is referring to a prior answer in the source interview.

Cite:
Is it even like dangerous to Uriel? Or his boss?

If Uriel just stood there in it, yeah, I mean he wouldn't, it could kill him I mean it's- again it's one of those- I mean Uriel is... he's so powerful that he's not even on the scale with everybody else. I mean yeah maybe the Eye of Balor could disintegrate Uriel if Uriel couldn't just immediately teleport anywhere or make the energy go somewhere else or basically do anything at all to defend himself. If he just stood there like a dummy, sure somebody could kill him with the Eye of Balor. He's not going to, freaking archangel.

In absence of the specific citation I haven't found again yet what I can demonstrate is that the white god/Uriel are out of scale with everyone else and enforce rules on direct peers of Ethniu that she temporarily ignored.

They literally had one of her peers on the battle field and he didn't directly fight her. Sure there's the bit about breaking the world doing it, but she clearly didn't have that issue. A problem that's endemic to their entire power category and not dragons specifically.

That and the conspicuous absence of any other titan:

Well as a quick follow-up then, is that-cause we know um the faerie courts and the queens and stuff they were kind of- they had to come into being for a reason, was that part of Mab's mantle's creation-to be able to stand up to kinds of things like that as like a failsafe?

I don't want to tell you too much about it just yet, but yeah I mean essentially you know Mab has a role and a purpose. So for her to be where she is, yeah is was kind of her duty to be able to stand up to threats like that. She wasn't really anticipated to /have to/ stand up to a titan because everybody was pretty sure they were all taken care of but you know Ethniu's been laying low, biding her time. But at the same time, they did what was appropriate they got everybody together to take on the threat, or at least everybody they could

Her entire type of being has either:

1) Been complying with the nerf rules and avoiding earth

2) Handled by the white god

3) Handled by the pre nerf population Ethniu beat like red headed step children.

All of that taken together paints a picture.

I mean... it just looks like Dragons and Titans are just that strong, and normally don't act because it would wreck the world. Nothing about being nerfed or anything.

Even the one type of being that brought the very idea of nerfs, the gods, were never stated to be nerfed by the White God, just forced into dormancy or inactivity due to a lack of worshippers.

For just doing things mortals can do ehhh we've not seen any mortal wizard with comparable feats to the original merlin. For God is bigger I doubt it. Its pretty explicit the world can end in dresden files and that God won't stop the world from ending if its a result of free will or some such nonsense.
Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. Merlin was a mortal wizard, exceptional as he was, that he did it demonstrates it's possible for a mortal to do so. If you want to claim he was special in some exclusive way you need at least some proof to work off of.

As to the other bit, letting mortals choose to end things is different than letting anyone else do it and doesn't say anything about strength. Ultimately whatever's behind the white God's mask has told every other power how the world is going to work, and the sleeper is taking a nap in his reality and not the other way around.

I didn't feel the need to get a cite for that because it's well established.

Vote is pretty split and not a lot of people have chinned in yet, I'll leave it up for a while longer while I write the introduction to Vegas since that will not be directly impacted.

Arc 11 Post 37: At the Moving Picture Show
At the Moving Picture Show

12th of January 2007 A.D.

In the end you decide to get Rosie out of here as fast as you is reasonable. No one should have to deal with this kind of needling, much less a new mother, much less your friend. In Chicago or in Sanctuary, you'll find her a place to stay, that much you vow. And yet part of you had hoped that the haste and the vagueness of your answers about where you'll be staying would elicit more than perfunctory requests to stay. But that is all that's on offer, like the Chrismas decorations matching right out of the box, like the big frosted pine in the corner fit for a postcard, it's all for show. One would probably find more holiday spirit in the McDonalds down the road, at least the employees might actually like each other.

"Humans often hide behind rigid forms when their fickle souls pull them this way and that Majesty," Usum offers as his presence, like a shadow on your eyes directs to Mrs Wilson.

"Somehow that feels even worse."

Rosie deserves better.

Hundreds upon hundreds of cars point to the glittering screen of McHenry Outdoor +, like sunflowers following the face of the sun as soft twilight envelops all. It's oddly mild for January in Chicago, jean jacket weather, or around there you guess plaid shirt and denim. One of the few Drive Through Movie Theaters still around the big screen is currently displaying the washed out colours of Kansas in the classic Wizard of Oz movie as Black Rider and the Blue Beetle made an odd match up in the third row, though not quite as much as the darn Bond car Lydia decided to come in, a silver Aston Martin DB5.

"See Harry, told you you'd look eccentric coming here in that," Tiffany offered from the back seat. At his incredulous look she adds: "It's all a matter of perspective, given the company people will think the doors are an artistic choice. Who knows maybe it'll even catch on. The world's seen weirder fashion trends."

"Dad says she has a point," Lydia chines in, head tipped a little to the side. "Hoop skirts, powdered wigs and sticking Egyptian funerary goods in one's drawing room come to mind."

Tiffany gives a sardonic laugh. "Curses 'R Us delivery services. Speaking of people doing irresponsible things with marks of ancient dread and the reason we're here today... Vegas. I'll start shall I?" When no one objects she settles in for a longer account: "The White Court's dug in like ticks in warm flesh, as you'd expect them to be in the city of Sin, more Skavis than Raith, Malvora or Lagioii. They work closer with the Red Court than most of their kin thanks to the Dragon playing neutral middle man, or they used to at least, not sure if that's still the case after the White Queen's bloody banquet two months ago. Still there's profit to be made in dollars and flesh, peddling drugs and fever dreams so I don't expect them to have cut the bloody cord entirely. Speaking of dreams thanks in no small part to the fact that the Courts are hands off in the city it has drawn an unusual number of Wyldfae, bright spttering things that in any other city would spark off an inferno with their passing. Theirs is the hand that crafts what many mortals see as their 'adventures' in Vegas, sprinkling a little glitter on the blood and sick..."

"Charming," you grimace.

For a wonder the once-demon seems a touch contrite at her choice of words. "Lastly there's the strange and occult 'mummies in the drawing room' kind of stuff. There's cleft in Death Valley for all sorts to wedge their way in, back in the nineteenth century, early twentieth it was spiritists and esoteric Churches these days its supposed to be Old World Cults, very old, back to the cradle of civilization. I don't have any first hand experience, but I know there's a cabal claiming to be the Cult of Ishtar reborn on the Strip and they have the power and the killer touch to back it up. There's a pawn shop called Croc's Cash that's plastered in Sobek iconography while doing strangely well given that it's in Vegas proper where the taxes are high and the Mob's interests go to die. There was something about sun worship and a new glass pyramid as well, but I'm not sure if that's serious or Egyptian come to that, just a rumour down the grapevine three years ago."

"The dead don't do well in Vegas," Lydia picked up the thread as Tiffany winds down. "Shadows banished by the glare of limelight. It used to be different back in the thirties and forties, but ever since Paradise got off the ground memories got crowded out by dreams. Awful convenient for the people who run the drug trade and the sex trade that their victims can't come for them, can't even whisper a warning, though with all this talk of Egypt," her hand reaches instinctively for the ankh earring. "The Gods of Khem knew how to honour the dead. Maybe it's something going right instead of wrong for once."

All the while Harry's shaking his head sadly, he'd call her naïve, but doesn't want to dash her hopes. "I asked around, but all I got was warnings from six postal codes that just say 'don't touch'. About the only one who was of any use was Murphy, she said there's rumours of a special task force called the LVPD Special Vices Squad that's supposed to look into human trafficking, drugs and money laundering. The general sentiment among police departments seems to be 'pour one out for the brave bastards'. With all they're up against I'm not surprised."

"I just hope they aren't taking any help from the wrong sorts," you muse. "With what Maeve told me about the Dragon he'd certainly look like the kingpin of Vegas if someone pulled the curtain for the cops to have a peak, but bumping him off would be... bad."

Who do you take with you to Vegas?

OOC: I have to post this one quick. Merry Christmas again from the actual day guys.

[X] Tiffanny and Lydia
-[X] Isabella and some Five Court agents rent rooms in a hotel and act unsuspicious and unconnected to you in case you need backup

Main party goes together, elite-mooks to back us up at need.
Isabella to be the face of the mook-squad since they aren't on earth long enough not to be noticeably if they have to talk to people.

Ironically, this setup isn't too different from what the Will of Kakuri tried in Chicago.

Edit: Since this might be a longer job, I don't feel okay with taking Micheal or Harry out of their daily stuff.
If we discover that we need significantly more firepower and have a day to spare, we can call them.

[X] Lydia, Tiffany, Isabela
-[X] Ask Murphy for contacts with LVPD

... Are we about to run into mummies? Anyway, Isabela as local vampire contact, Lydia for the local dead, and due to unsubtle hints about her own Egyptian ancestry, Tiffany as the one with the lore of Longing. I am actually hesitant about Tiffany.

Uh two things there's a word of god that they can't come out cause the white god told them they can't come into reality anymore without taking risks if they want to do anything important. Also two gods aren't limited by worship their still just as powerful as far as we know their limited in their ability to come out of the nevernever. Not even sure it's a worship thing so much as acknowledging their existence thing but it's vague as far as we know.

If you think about it the gods in Dresden files used to have a disability ramp to come into the mortal world. But later on God uninstalled the disability ramp and they now need to buy into mortality to come into the mortal world and actually do shit. They also apparently need fame for accessibility issues.

I bet the CSI folks and MEs working in Vegas see some weird shit, probably way worse than Butters in Chicago.

So, next turn we need to:
Do a lot of crafting (probably action +2 bonuses)
Find an apartment for Rosie (it's a temporary arrangement, until we make something better)
Go to school
Meet Alphas - better to nip the issue in the bud, until they decide to rescue Harry from us
Hunt for Lunar exaltation
... And for the last one, I think we could raid Siriothrax's hoard. There should be crafting components there, and the lunar hunt involves dragons too, so it's synergetic.

If you listen closely you can hear Odin laughing himself sick at this in the distance.

As a thread Christmas present, here's some sketchy WoJ transcriptions that are pretty hilarious:

Now one thing that I love about the Dresden Files in particular is that it's so all-inclusive, you take all the world and you look at all the mythologies and things that are in there and there's a little bit of everything in there. Now the one thing that I would love to see in the Dresden Files that I don't think would really fit anywhere else would be aliens, whether it was in the form of some magical construct that brought down aliens or if it was actual aliens but is there any chance of something like that coming into the Dresden Files?

I mean in my headcanon because this isn't really something that's been planned but in my headcanon there's two kinds of encounters with aliens in the Dresden Files universe. One when the fae are bored and they want to do something to mess with mortals' heads that's one way to get aliens. The other way is when they crash when their high-tech ships get too close to all the damn wizards on this confusing little planet. And that's how Roswell happened in the Dresden Files universe, that was the same time that Morgan was out there fighting the Skinwalker and it was Morgan throwing magic around that brought the spaceship down.

But so really the aliens have basically just hung up a beacon just outside the solar system that says "this planet is just too weird to bother with, stay away".

How do you determine the powerscaling of all the different pantheons you use in the series?

I use the five dot scale from World of Darkness way back in the day. So basically if a normal human could do it or do it using tools and equipment that's one dot, if it's somebody who is clearly supernatural and could really whip up on regular mortals on a steady basis that's two dots, heavyweight white council folks they're three dots, like that. It's just different weight classes is what I do, so.

I haven't actually watched the cited interviews and there's weird contradictions with other stuff from prior WoJs, like lord Raith not actually having immunity to mortal magic*, but Morgan causing Roswell by unknowingly catching aliens in his AoE while fighting a Naagoloshi and DF factions actually being made with the 5 dot scale in mind is too funny not to share.

* and apparently the nevernever does actually go everywhere instead of being concentrated around the solar system. No one has made it past the moon yet but apparently Margaret, probably meaning Harry's mom and not the other ones, was hardcore enough to have potentially make something work in that direction if she'd lived longer.

It makes sense really the nevernever can get really dangerous depending on where you are and I'm not sure this is a good word but getting deeper in the layers probably makes it likely you don't make it out. But, like if you got really fucking deep you may as well never get back anyways.
